R.I.P Julia Grant and Many More…

I listened to the Radio 4 obituaries programme ‘Last Word’ yesterday and they paid tribute to Julia Grant, the trans-activist who was the subject of a series of BBC TV documentaries which charted her gender reassignment during the 1980s and 90s. I only watched one of the documentaries, screened in the 1990s. It was one which contained footage of Julia – who began life as George Roberts – during her consultation some years previously with a Top Doc at Charing Cross, a psychiatrist who was a gender identity specialist. Julia was obliged to see this man before the gender reassignment surgery that she wanted could go ahead. The Top Doc concerned refused to allow his face to be shown on camera or to be identified.

The Top Doc treated Julia dreadfully, absolutely dreadfully. So much so that the crap faced by transgender people gained a great deal of publicity. At one point he snapped at Julia ‘you have stepped out of line and I don’t like people who step out of line’. He subsequently turned down her request for gender realignment surgery. During the consultation Julia was reduced to jelly. She was not highly educated and had no education at all in medicine so was not able to identify the many ways in which the Top Doc breached all good practice and thus she did not say ‘what the fuck do you think that you are doing?’

This was the Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic, supposedly the global leader in that field. We take referrals from across the world! Yes and as far as NHS UK patients went, it was that shitbag whom they had to encounter if they wanted gender reassignment surgery. No other option. You have this bastard or you don’t even get considered for treatment.

The nation however missed something. This Doc was not alone in being a psychiatrist who conducted himself in that manner. Many of them did, including Dr Tony Roberts at the Hergest Unit, until Roberts finally retired not so long ago. Exactly the same bedside manner: rude, insulting, with bizarre notions of what constitutes ‘gender appropriate’ behaviour, deliberately intimidating. The geographical area covered by Tony Roberts had the second highest suicide rate among women in England and Wales, except for Camden. When I complained to the GMC about Roberts in 2002, the GMC did not investigate my complaint. They maintained that Tony Roberts had not done anything inappropriate. Although he had ordered my key worker off of my case – my key worker whom I liked – appointed himself my doctor against my wishes, refused to treat me and then ordered every other Top Doc not to treat me on the grounds that I was ‘his patient’. One night a I rang the GP on-call, who recorded on my file ‘suicidal ++++’ and contacted Roberts. Roberts faxed two words back – ‘DO NOTHING’.

I was not alone in having these experiences with Roberts. As another patient observed, he was ‘another dangerous madman’. Tony Roberts graduated from Manchester University in 1984. He trained with the abusive nutters there who included Dafydd’s old boss Dr Bob Hobson, who ran a sex abuse ring at the Maudsley and then in 1974 relocated to Manchester where he expanded on the ring there (see post ‘The Mentor’). Ian Brockington, Tony Francis’s former boss, also worked at Manchester University, until he joined Dafydd and Francis’s mate Professor Robert Bluglass at the University of Birmingham (see post ‘Ian Brockington’s Mischief’). After learning at their knees, Roberts headed for a job at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh where he joined Dafydd and then Roberts was appointed Clinical Director of the Hergest Unit…

Years later, my lawyers discovered a document in the possession of the GMC purporting to be my letter of complaint about Tony Roberts. It was a forgery. See post ‘The General Medical Council And Yet Another Forged Document’.

Although the Top Doc who treated Julia Grant so appallingly refused to allow himself to be identified at the time of the TV programme, he was later revealed to be John Randell. John Randell was one fun guy, but no-one dared mention anything at the time other than his sadism towards Julia Grant. By the time that Randell’s earlier interview with Julia was broadcast on the programme that I watched, Randell had been dead since 1982. Although the old bastard had been 6 ft under for years, no-one dared say anything ruder about him in public other than that he was old fashioned, showed bigotry towards transgender people and had some rather odd views about women.

John Randell was born in Penarth, Cardiff in 1918. He qualified as a Top Doctor at the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1941. From 1942-46 he was a Surgeon Lieutenant in the RNVR. Randall knew Gwynne the lobotomist , Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain who facilitated the paedophile/trafficking ring at St George’s Hospital Medical School which was linked to Dafydd’s gang and Randell also knew about the Naughtiness In High Places re Lord Louis Mountbatten and the gay spies in the Admiralty, as discussed in my post ‘The Defence Of The Realm’.

After serving in the RNVR, Randell worked at Guy’s, St George’s and Tommy’s Hospitals. All of which were already facilitating the organised abuse upon which Dafydd et al expanded into a pan-European ring in the 1970s. In 1950 Randell was appointed Physician for Psychological Medicine at Charing Cross. There he worked with Lennox Broster who had been treating intersex people since the 1930s, but not transsexuals as such.

Lennox Ross Broster (1889 – 12 April 1965) was a South African-born surgeon who spent most of his career at Charing Cross. Broster was educated in Grahamstown, first at St Andrew’s College, then at Rhodes University College. Broster received a Rhodes Scholarship and began studying medicine at Trinity College, Oxford. He continued his medical training at Guy’s Hospital, qualifying as a Top Doc from there. Broster served with the RAMC during WW I. After WW I, Broster specialised in the treatment of endocrine disease. In the 1930s and 1940s Broster was among the first surgeons to operate routinely on intersex patients, in work that received frequent coverage in the British press and helped to establish Charing Cross Hospital as a centre for intersex and transgender medicine. His patients during this period included the Olympic athlete Mark Weston.

Broster held junior surgical positions at a number of hospitals, including at the Radcliffe Infirmary and at Guy’s Hospital. He also worked at the Queen’s Hospital for Children. During this period Broster became associated with Charing Cross, where he would remain for the rest of his career. A history of Charing Cross published in 1967 stated that Broster had been “one of the outstanding surgeons” there. Although employed as a general surgeon, Broster took a special interest in endocrinology. Simultaneously with his work at Charing Cross, Broster also served as a consultant to several other hospitals – the Bute Hospital in Luton, Chesham Cottage Hospital, Dunstable Hospital, Beckenham Hospital – and to the Church Army.

In the 1930s and 1940s Broster provided surgical and hormonal treatment to intersex patients, in collaboration with the psychiatrist Clifford Allen. This attracted considerable press attention to Broster and Charing Cross during the 1930s. A 1938 story in the News of the Screws described Broster as “the famous surgeon, who has brought new hope and happiness into the baffled lives of many men and women who were desirous of changing their sex”. Although journalists often described the treatment as sex changing, the patients they wrote about would more accurately be described as intersex and there is no evidence that Broster operated on transsexuals.

Broster gave lecture tours of the United States and Canada in 1936 and 1937. Broster gave lectures to the American Surgical Association in 1941 and he became an honorary fellow of the Association in 1942. In 1948 the South African Medical Association invited Broster to lecture in South Africa and in 1950 he was a visiting Professor at Cairo University. Broster was Chairman of the Court of examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and also acted as an examiner for the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Leeds.

Broster represented the South African branches of the BMA on the BMA’s Council, 1938-45/46, when the independent Medical Association of South Africa was established. Broster was also involved with the BMA’s Section of Surgery, serving as an honorary Secretary in 1929 and a Vice-President in 1950.

In 1950 Broster became Chairman of the Commonwealth Medical Advisory Bureau’s Committee of Management. In 1952 he became Chair of a Committee, set up jointly by the Royal Society of Medicine’s Section of Endocrinology and the Society for Endocrinology, which had the task of considering how British research in endocrinology could be encouraged. He was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1958.

Broster was a strong supporter of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Broster was an enthusiastic Rugby player as a student and a Top Doctor  and served as President of the United Hospitals Rugby Football Club. Like all the best Top Doctors, Broster played golf and retained an interest in sports contests between Oxford and other universities.

Broster suffered a stroke after retiring, when about to sit down at Lord’s Cricket Ground to watch a match. He made a partial recovery but later died on 12 April 1965.

Working as a high profile general surgeon in Oxford at the time that he did will have meant that Broster knew and almost certainly taught Sir Charles Evans, the surgeon who served as Principal of UNCW, 1958 -84. Sir Charles trained at Oxford and spent his very early career in surgery there. See previous posts.

Lennox Broster and his wife Edith had three daughters. Their eldest daughter Cynthia also became a physician and finished her career as Principal Medical Officer for the Oxfordshire Area Health Authority. So Cynthia knew about the organised abuse of kids in care in Oxfordshire with which social work manager Barbara Kahan and her child psych husband Dr Vladimir Kahan colluded. Babs was appointed a children’s social work adviser to Keith Joseph when he was Heath’s Secretary of State at the DHSS and Babs remained advising Gov’ts for years. See post eg. ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’. Oxford University’s Dept of Psychiatry has also been complicit with the abuse of kids and vulnerable adults, as well as being party to cancer research fraud funded by the Cancer Research Campaign. See previous posts…

Cynthia married the neurologist Charles Phillips in 1942. When Charles was called up for military service in the same year, Lennox provided a recommendation that led to Charles’s appointment to the RAMC.

Charles Phillips died in September 1994 and as ever the Royal College of Physicians ‘Lives of the Fellows’ online provided an obituary:

Charles Garrett Phillips b.13 October 1916 d.9 September 1994
BA Oxon(1938) BSc(1939) BM BCh(1942) MRCP(1944) DM(1951) FRCP(1962) FRS(1963) Hon DSc Monash (1971)

As a neurologist who studied at Oxford and then soon after returned to work there, Phillips too will have known Sir Charles Evans. Phillips was only two years older than Evans…

Charles Garrett Phillips had a major impact on experimental and clinical neurology, recording from pyramidal neurons in the cortex and contributing to our understanding of central motor control. In his monographs and in many of his papers Phillips successfully demonstrated the relevance of animal data, intelligently adduced, for the management of motor disorders in man.

This sounds rather as though Charles worked in the area of primates in cages with things stuck into their heads.

Beauty is pain: Cosmetic animal testing and cruelty-free ...

Phillips’ formidable analytical intelligence was evident at an early stage, and perhaps best demonstrated in his Ferrier lecture and in two monographs. In his 1968 Royal Society Ferrier lecture Phillips explained how the brain was involved in the servo control of the muscles of the hand in primates.

I thought as much.

Secondly, with his main collaborator in the 1960s, Bob Porter, Phillips wrote a book entitled ‘Cortico spinal neurones: their role in movement ‘(London, Academic Press). Published in 1977, the monograph is a seamless synthesis of electrophysiological and micro anatomical studies in which Phillips and Porter refer frequently to the work of their contemporaries as well as historical pioneers. Phillips’ second monograph on ‘Movements of the hand’ (Liverpool University Press, 1985), based on his 1982 Sherrington lecture, was the acme of his scientific thought and writings. He described in detail the inputs and outputs of the cortical modules which resemble the “integrated circuits in electronics terminology”. He particularly emphasized the importance of inputs from the muscle afferents which he had already highlighted in his Ferrier lecture, and moved easily from the micro to the macro by explaining the circuitry for programmed motor patterns in the central nervous system.

Charles Garret Phillips was the son of George Ramsey Phillips, anaesthetist to St Mary’s Hospital, and Flora Phillips. He was educated at Bradfield College, Magdalen College, Oxford, and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The Bart’s which by the 1970s was facilitating organised abuse which could be traced back at least to the presence of Dafydd’s pal Lady Juliet Bingley working as a medical almoner at Bart’s after she qualified at the LSE in the early 1950s. Lady Juliet’s dad Reginald Vick spent most of his career as a surgeon at Bart’s. See previous posts.

At Oxford he took a first in animal physiology. After medical qualification he spent three years in the RAMC as a neurologist during which time he took the MRCP. After the war Phillips returned to Oxford, where he became a fellow of Trinity College in 1946, a university lecturer, reader and subsequently appointed to a personal chair in neurophysiology in 1966. He was a secretary of the Physiological Society between 1960 and 1966. In 1975 he was elected to Dr Lee’s chair of anatomy at Oxford and retired in 1983.

In spite of the high status he had achieved Charles remained remarkably modest. It was this modesty and a degree of uncertainty, together with the wish not to be constrained by commitments to outside funding bodies, which prevented him from applying for a research grant.

That is the best excuse that I have ever heard for not bothering to apply for research funding.

However, it must also be admitted that the generous ‘class grant’ which the University bestowed on the physiology laboratory made an application for outside funds unnecessary.

That explains Charles suddenly being overcome by modesty.

The realization that the University’s generosity was not uniformly distributed in South Parks Road proved to be one of three culture shocks which stunned Phillips when he took up the chair of anatomy. In contrast to the situation in the physiology laboratory, Phillips found that virtually all research depended upon outside grant funding.

Charles was astounded that the manna from heaven did not continue.

The two other shocks in store for Charles were, first, the conflict between staff which was generated by the five years of uncertainty which followed Geoffrey Harris’ untimely death in 1971,

This sounds interesting, I will dig a bit deeper when I have time.

Geoffrey Wingfield Harris was educated first at Dulwich College (1927-1931) and then at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1932-1939). He began clinical training at St. Mary’s Hospital, London (1936-1940), worked briefly at Hillingdon County Hospital (1939) and then worked at Cambridge as the Demonstrator in Anatomy (1940-1947), Lecturer in Anatomy (1947-1948) and also Lecturer in Physiology (1947-1952). From 1952-1962 Harris was Senior Lecturer in Physiology, University of London and worked in the Laboratory of Experimental Neuroendocrinology at the Maudsley. Dafydd ‘trained’ at the Maudsley in the early 1960s at the knee of Bob Hobson the trafficker and the wider collection of dishonest incompetents whom were abusing their patients in numerous ways. See posts ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’ and ‘The Discovery Of A Whole New Galaxy…’  In 1953 Harris was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1962 he moved to Hertford College, Oxford, becoming Dr. Lee’s Professor of Anatomy, a post he held until his death in 1971.

Beauty is pain: Cosmetic animal testing and cruelty-free ...

and, secondly, the fact that the teaching of topographical anatomy had not changed since Phillips was a student. Charles Phillips’ appointment allayed the uncertainty of the interregnum that followed the death of Harris and this, together with his gentle but firm democratic leadership, soon restored civilized relations between the staff.

Translate as ‘Phillips imposed a regime and ruled over dissenters with a rod of iron’.

But he was not so successful in revising the teaching of topographical anatomy. Charles placed greater emphasis on ‘functional’ anatomy, including the introduction of transcutaneous stimulation of muscles. But, it was clear to all that Phillips’ appointment was an interim measure. He will not be remembered as an anatomist, nor would this have been his wish.

This rather sounds as though Phillips wasn’t much good at anatomy and that someone would remind the world of this if ever anyone did remember him as an anatomist.

During his years in human anatomy Phillips also served as editor of ‘Brain’ and on the Medical Research Council, tasks which he took very seriously.

Even though his anatomy wasn’t up to much.

As editor he was proud of the fact that he did not reject papers: rather he urged respect for the work of others even though this sometimes involved major revision of the text or additional experiments to bring the manuscript up to scratch.

Everything accepted, even crap. The journal must have been very short of contributions because journal editors love rejecting papers and stressing that not any old shite gets in this journal.

Charles Phillips was a quick witted and articulate speaker and a gifted conversationalist. To dine with him at a dinner of the Physiological Society was always an immensely rich and pleasurable experience. Indeed Charles endeavoured to make each encounter with colleagues and friends an intellectual occasion using his gentle but penetrating wit and judiciously crafted turn of phrase to set the ambience.

Charles would have put Libby Purves in the shade. Please someone, take Arthur Mullard along to a Physiological Society dinner, secrete a camera about one’s person and film the occasion.

Research for Phillips came to an abrupt end when he transferred to human anatomy and retirement, when it came in 1983, was complete.

His services were dispensed with at the earliest opportunity.

This contrasted quite markedly with the lifestyle of some of his close colleagues who were equally or more active in research after retirement. But it was characteristic of Charles to follow life in a precise and orderly sequence. He also confided that experimentation through the night, which recording from cortical neurons demanded, had become too great a strain. However, it seemed to the observer that Charles was in fact quite content in that he had by the age of 58 completed the task he had set out to accomplish.

58 yrs old is very early for a scientist to pack up work. They usually cling on for decades after retirement at 60 or 65, pursuing the research that they enjoy without being bothered by the onerous admin duties imposed on them before retirement.

It is a tragic irony that the end for a man of his powerful and acute intellect was accompanied by severe mental deterioration.

I wonder what happened…

He married Cynthia, herself a physician, in 1942 and they had two daughters.

The psychiatrist who worked with Broster at Charing Cross and established that institution as the world leader in gender identity work, Clifford Allen, made a sharp distinction between intersexuality and transvestism (the term then in use for what is now described as being transgender) which Allen saw as a psychological pathology not requiring surgical intervention. In 1954 Allen wrote: ‘the abnormal minds should be treated in order to conform them with the normal body and not vice versa’.

I can’t find much about Clifford Allen online, although David Andrew Griffith’s article in ‘Sexualities’, Jan 2018, ‘Diagnosing sex: Intersex surgery and ‘sex change’ in Britain 1930–1955’ does discuss Clifford Allen:

Clifford Allen… the consultant psychiatrist at Charing Cross, the Physician in Charge of the Psychiatric Department of the Seamen’s Hospital, Greenwich, and the Assistant Physician to the Institute of Medical Psychology at the Tavistock Clinic in Bloomsbury.

Previous posts have discussed the Tavi during those years and some of the Top Docs there who were facilitating abuse, including those with links to north Wales.

Broster and Allen shared the view that atypical biology could lead to atypical psychology; if adrenal glands were thought to masculinize the biological, then they would be expected to influence sex roles, aims and object choice as well.  For both Broster and Allen, biological normality was structured into a binary of male and female bodies, and linked to a strict psychological normality, as measured by heterosexuality….

Broster largely saw adults, particularly at the start of his research, although he saw an increasing number of younger and pre-pubescent cases just prior to the interruption of his work caused by the Second World War…

In 1940, Clifford Allen argued that treatments should be strictly divided between psychotherapeutic treatment for individuals who do not have an identifiable atypical anatomy and surgical intervention for individuals who do (Allen, 1940). Broster had the authority to decide or deny physical treatments, or to refer to Allen, who had the authority to decide or deny psychological treatments. In Allen’s chapter of The Adrenal Cortex and Intersexuality, he described a case study of a woman who ‘wants to be a man’ so that she could marry her girlfriend. No physical abnormality was found, so Allen offered psychotherapy to address her (in his view) homosexuality, which she refused (Broster et al., 1938: 106–107). Despite the agency that Broster narrated in his case studies, medicine seems to have remained the authority and conveyer of legitimacy for individuals who did not conform to biological or psychological norms of sex.

Broster’s 1944 book, Endocrine Man, sharpens the distinction between individuals with what the medical profession defined as physical or psychological abnormalities. He was very clear that in both cases, treatment of some kind should be pursued, to obtain as close a state to ‘normal’ as possible:

When their troubles are due to natural causes their plight is pitiable. Society in general is not a respecter of persons, is suspicious, and indeed often hostile to these abnormals. This attitude should be rightly reserved for the decadent imitators and propagandists of these perverted states, who form a festering sore in our midst. (Broster, 1944: 95)

Broster and Allen were Top Docs who were knowingly working with colleagues who were facilitating abuse. As was John Randell.

Clifford Allen certainly came up with an interesting invention outside of the field of gender identity. During the 1960s, the presence of Caribbean Angels in British hospitals was so visible that it inspired Allen to diagnose a medical condition, Heterochromophilia: ‘the compulsion in human beings to choose a mate of a different colour’. Allen published a letter in the British Journal of Psychiatry in 1968 which claimed that Heterochromophilia stemmed from a newborn’s identification with the first face it laid eyes on when it emerged from the birth canal. ‘It seems to be that the condition is rare and not of great importance,’ Allen wrote.  ‘But since we are getting more coloured women nursing white babies these days there is a likelihood of this becoming much more common’.

Those white babies will clap eyes on a big black face and a lifelong taste for mating with negroes will be established.

It would however be preferable to seeing this as soon as one is born, or indeed at any point during one’s life:

Dr Dafydd Alun Jones

I was exposed to dangerous levels of Enid Blyton as a child and I had a copy of the later notorious Three Golliwogs book which contained the line about a big black face at the window. When I was a student, I had a friend who hadn’t been exposed to Enid Blyton and I told him that the three gollies were called Golly, Nigger and Wog. He suggested that Blyton should have written in a fourth golly, Bleck Bestard. Thatch and Denis had investments in South African businesses at the time of this conversation, but their only reason for refusing to impose sanctions on South Africa was the suffering that sanctions would inflict on the people living in the townships. In South Africa as well as in Gwynedd.

His brother John Ennals was Chairman of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, 1968-76. Lord Ennals’ other brother Martin was the DG of Amnesty International. Jeremy Thorpe was an Anti-Apartheid Campaigner. They all colluded with Dafydd’s gang, as did many more more at the forefront of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. If any of them had gone public on the crimes of Thatcher’s friends Peter Morrison and Jimmy Savile, Thatcher’s Gov’t – one of the few props which the South African Gov’t had during the 1980s –  would have been brought down. But none of them did. They and their network instead worked very hard at contributing to the effort to ensure that I and others were never heard re Dafydd. See previous posts for further info about those who were so distressed at what was happening in South Africa that they assisted the gang who supplied kids to Thatch’s friends for sex.

At the end of the 1950s John Randell wrote a paper on 50 transvestites and transsexuals that he had worked with. In his 1960 MD thesis ‘Cross Dressing and the Desire To Change Sex’ (University of Wales), Randell discussed 61 male to female and 16 female to male cases. This was one of the first higher degree theses on transsexuality. The Expert was born.

During the 1960s Randell was seeing 50 cases a year, which rose to nearly 200 in the 1970s. And every one of them will have been treated like dirt.

They did For The Poor! It’s what they dreamed of!

By Randell’s own figures, he saw 2438 patients (1768 male to female, 670 female to male). He also spent half his time with general psychiatric patients. Told you so. This man was let loose on people whom he was able to detain for years in psychiatric hospitals or recommend for transfer to a high security institution, forcibly inject with drugs which could result in lifelong debilitating ‘side effects’ or of course kill the patient, forcibly impose ECT on the patient or lobotomise them against their wishes. Or he could simply refuse to treat desperately ill patients who were unable to look after themselves. In the event of ordering such ‘treatment’, or indeed witholding lifesaving treatment, Randell’s manners, attitude or rapport with his patients will not have been any better than they were with Julia Grant.

In 1969, Randell’s name was mentioned several times in press reports about the First International Symposium on Gender Identity and he testified at the Corbett vs Corbett trial that he ‘considered that the respondent (ie April Ashley) is properly classified as a male homosexual transsexualist’, which contributed to the legal problems of transsexuals and intersex persons in the UK for the next 35 years.

April Ashley is an English model and restaurant hostess. She was outed as a transgender woman by ‘The Sunday People’ in 1961 and is one of the earliest British people known to have had gender reassignment surgery. April Ashley was constantly told how vile she was by people who then asked her to have sex with them.

Corbett vs Corbett was the case concerned with April Ashley’s divorce. Randell appeared for Arthur Corbett who was petitioning for his marriage to April Ashley to be annulled on the grounds that she was a man. Eeh, he’s a raving male homosexual transsexualist. It’s been diagnosed.

Readers might recognise the name of the person who wrote the foreword to the book, Prof Desmond Curran. Dessie has featured in previous posts (eg.’Meet The Gwerin!’). Dessie was the daddy of the paedophiles/people traffickers of St George’s, Dessie having founded their esteemed Dept of Psychiatry, to which abusers flocked once Dessie set up shop. It was Dessie who ‘treated’ Norman Scott many years before Norman became headline news after Norman had a breakdown as a result of the harassment and intimidation from Mr Thrope and his friends. Norman ended up in the hands of Dessie because Dessie was an Expert on Sexual Perversion, rather than an Expert on criminals in public life who have shagged both Ma’am Darling and Lord Snowdon, who subsequently marry Miriam, the ex-wife of Lilibet’s cousin and try to have their former non-Royal partners murdered. The diagnosis was that Norman was a worm, a liar, a vagabond, a loathsome spotted reptile and a man, or woman, who chews pillows for kicks and that Mr Thrope was one of the most intelligent, prettiest politicians who could have, had he wanted, become Prime Minister Of This Country Or President Of The World…

Peter Cook's biased judge sketch and its background - YouTube

Mr Justice Cocklecarrot: ‘And now you must retire, as must I’. Which indeed he did.

Harold Wilson’s good friend the crooked solicitor Lord Arnold Goodman was the first to come to Mr Thrope’s aid:

Lord Goodman was a big mate of Nye’s widow Jennie Lee and Harold Wilson gave them the flagship project of the Open University to play with. By the time that Mr Thrope appeared at Minehead Magistrates Court for the committal hearing in Nov 1978, Sir David Napley was representing him. Napley turned up at Minehead in his Roller, just to show the magistrates who was boss.

George Carman QC the bent barrister, who had known about Dafydd and the gang and the Westminster Paedophile Ring for years, made his reputation by defending Mr Thrope at his subsequent Old Bailey trial in 1979.

Killer Carman hosted two junior barristers in his Chambers who became famous:
  • The Secret Diary of Cherie Booth, QC (aged 53 and a half ...

Norman, the only man at Mr Thrope’s Old Bailey trial who told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:

Now that Norman has been declared to be a Gay Icon at a film stars ceremony, I’m thinking of campaigning for him to become Head Of State. I don’t know if Norman would want to do this, he might prefer to remain in Devon with his horses, but Norman would undoubtedly do a far better job of Leading The Country than the gang of lying criminals who tried to kill him.

I note that on the cover of Randell’s book Dessie is described as the Chancellor’s Medical Visitor. The Chancellor in this context is the Lord Chancellor, rather than the Chancellor of, for example, UCNW, which for the many years that Dafydd’g gang operated in UCNW was Carlo. The Medical Visitor is an expert accepted by the judiciary as being eminent in his field. So the Lord Chancellor accepted Dessie, the foundation stone of a sex abuse ring, as a Medical Visitor. That doesn’t surprise me after the research that I’ve done over the past two years. That edition of Randell’s book was published in 1976 – the book was originally published in 1973 –  by which time business for Dafydd’s gang was booming and as previous posts have made clear, the crimes of the gang and related gangs such as the one that Dessie founded in south London, were being concealed at the highest levels of Gov’t. I’m not sure when Dessie attained the status of the Lord Chancellor’s Medical Visitor, it could have been an honour conferred upon him years previously, but the Lord Chancellor 1974-79 was Lord Elwyn-Jones.

The Lord Elwyn-Jones

My post ‘Lest We Forget’ discussed how for many years, Elwyn Jones, a crooked Welsh layer, was one of the principal links between London and Wales in Dafydd’s ring.

1976 was the momentous year in which panic gripped the paedophiles and their friends. In Jan 1976, Norman was prosecuted for a minor social security fraud which was linked to Mr Thrope’s harassment and intimidation of him and the story was finally reported in the press. In March 1976, Andrew Newton, who alleged that he had been hired to kill Norman, appeared at Exeter Crown Court, was convicted of firearms offences and subsequently imprisoned. Norman appeared as a prosecution witness and explained what had been going on. It was becoming clear that Mr Thrope could well find himself charged with a serious criminal offence, which indeed he subsequently was.

The gwerin at UCNW began tearing each other’s throats out in 1976 (see previous posts) and a new Chancellor of the University of Wales – who’s constituent colleges included UCNW – was appointed, Carlo. Dai Francis, a Communist ex-miner who had led the south Wales branch of the NUM during the miner’s strike which brought down Heath’s Gov’t also stood for election as Chancellor, but no-one was going to risk appointing Dai at a time like that. Dai was the father of Dr Hywel Francis, the Labour MP for Aberavon, 2001-15. Hywel Francis was succeeded in the seat by Windbag Jr. See previous posts…

Harold Wilson suddenly resigned as PM on 5 April 1976 and there has been speculation ever since that he knew that he had Alzheimers or ooh he was a KGB spy and was about to be outed… No, the reason was that Harold knew that things re the Westminster Paedophile Ring could unravel quite rapidly and he either jumped or was pushed by the security services. He was only pushed so far, Wilson remained in Parliament for many more years…

  • He’s popped in for a curry on the way home and is ringing the wife with his lame excuses as to his delay.

  • Pussy Galore’s fed up that he hasn’t Told His Wife About Them yet.
  • Pussy Galore by Honor Blackman.jpg

So in true Paedophiles In Distress style, in 1976, an Expert who was Of The Gang published a book which advertised the credentials of the Expert who knew all about the loathsome spotted reptile who also happened to be a prosecution witness and could well be again in the near future but in a rather bigger case…

Norman, I am touched that the tactics employed to deal with you were very similar to those employed to deal with me! Hilarious, I begin a career in cancer research and suddenly Tony Francis’s mate begins a career in cancer research, funded by the Cancer Research Campaign, just like I was and he even worked with people linked to the team of which I was a member. Only Peter Mcguire et al participated in a massive research fraud which ended in the suicide of one of their colleagues… Brown and I show an interest in publishing about the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and suddenly ooh look everyone, Dafydd’s friends have published on the history of Denbigh, ooh you can’t believe Brown and Baker, YUK, READ US, READ US, DON’T LISTEN TO THEM ANYONE, SHE’S MAD… Brown starts up a journal about Arts In Health and suddenly the Top Doctors are all Experts in Arts and Health.

Oh they are a fucking joke aren’t they Norman. Brown shares his salary out with his friends who have been shafted by those bastards and makes do with three pairs of trousers and a few T shirty things and the troughing bastards continue to demand more and more and more, while stealing Brown’s ideas because they just cannot do it themselves.

After the Corbett vs Corbett trial in 1969, which did transgender people no good at all, Randell was the Expert sought out by the media and appeared on the occasional radio programs. In 1980 the ‘News of the Screws’ claimed that Randell and his surgeon, Peter Phillip, had made London the ‘sex-change capital of the world’. It will have been for people who were prepared to stuff Randell and Phillip’s mouths with gold, there’s always room for more gold in a Top Doc’s mouth even after many years of Nye’s largesse. Randell had not actually been in favour of surgery until his patients who had had surgery abroad returned with positive evaluations. Randell spotted the gold mine and knew that if he didn’t start offering surgery as well, Top Docs overseas would be mining the rich seam that was waiting to be exploited… Even in the 1960s less than 10% of Randell’s patients managed to achieve surgery and only a third of the male to females had vaginoplasty. In the 1970s when numbers increased, still only 15% of patients achieved surgery.

The irony is that during the recorded consultation with Julia, in her desperation to get help, Julia asked Randell if the process could be accelerated if she became a private patient. The old bastard snapped ‘no, my opinion cannot be bought’. Oh yes it can and it was, but not by Julia.

When I was unlawfully refused all NHS care by the CEO of the NW Wales NHS Trust, I wrote to the then Welsh Gov’t Health Minister Edwina Hart and asked to be therefore provided with access to alternative care. Edwina wrote back and said that she would not access any type of private care for me and she had done as much as she could. Well, she had confronted the CEO and Chairman of the Trust, but they ignored her, refused to investigate my complaint or provide the NHS care to which I was legally entitled, so Edwina backed off. I had given her enough evidence to have both of them arrested. The Welsh Gov’t is now commissioning the private sector to treat thousands of patients because the NHS just has not done it. The Top Docs in Wales are also now deliberately keeping their waiting lists so long that desperate patients in severe pain are being forced to pay for private treatment. This is what happens when Gov’ts pander to criminals…

Drop a bomb on them someone.

With regard to transgender patients, I’m not at all sure that the sort of surgery that people were begging Randell for is a good idea, but there isn’t the scope in this post to expand on precisely why. Can I just note that one of my main reservations is that I have known for years that distressed vulnerable patients end up in the hands of Randell and people like him, who cannot be trusted further than one can spit a rat and who simply are not the people to advise on complex gender identity problems? I do understand that people feeling uncomfortable with their gender can feel absolutely desperate, but this lot are really not going to help, even these days. Hamfisted liars and conmen who really are best avoided…

In 1990 Dafydd tried to persuade a 19 yr old patient at Ysbyty Gwynedd to undergo gender reassignment surgery because he was gay. Dr Sadie Francis was later appointed as a gender identity specialist for Gwynedd, although she had no experience in this area. In the late 1980s, Sadie was appointed as a consultant psychiatrist although she was not, by GMC regulations, permitted to hold a consultant’s post, having not followed the appropriate career path. The GMC knew that a fiddle had been carried out and colluded with it. For many years the gender identity specialist in north Wales was Dr Kenny Midence, a clin psy who is a long standing member of Dafydd’s gang and has co-authored with gang members. Comments online regarding Midence’s service – he has a big private practice – suggest that if one hands the dosh over to Kenny, he’ll write the referral for gender reassignment surgery. It probably makes the patients leaving Midence’s office feel a lot better than those who left Randell’s did, but the ‘all comers welcome in return for dosh’ approach could prove disastrous a few years down the line if someone regrets their decision.

When Randell realised that the customers and their money were going elsewhere, he began arguing that surgery could be appropriate and that psychotherapy did not work. Even then Randell restricted surgery to ‘sane, intelligent, single and passable individuals’. ‘Passable’ meaning conforming to Randell’s rather 1950s ideas of being ‘ladylike’…. Dafydd once yelled at me that I was not a ‘normal woman’. Of course I wasn’t, I had a brain and I took the piss out of him.

Randell must have been a bit like one of the men in the Monty Python ‘Nudge Nudge’ sketch, in which Having Sex With A Lady is discussed. ‘Photographs ay he asked him knowingly’. Yeh, the child porn that was being produced in north Wales by Dafydd’s gang, or Dafydd’s mate Prof Linford Rees’s photos of Bathing Beauties (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’).

Lest anyone wade in with analyses of Randell’s idiocy being a consequence of him being in possession of testicles, let me tell you that I know Lady Doctors and Angels who’s ideas are every bit as laughable. One Lady Doctor told a friend of mine that many Lady Doctors think that ‘periods are horrible old fashioned things which we could well do without’; an Angel I know told female psych patients that they should always shave their armpits – similar advice was dispensed by ‘Jackie’ magazine in 1976; a Top Doc stated in front of female Angels that he could tell when his Lady Patients were well because they wore dresses; one of the much nicer Lady Doctors at Springfield Hospital always wore dresses to work ‘because a lot of my young female patients have problems with their femininity, so I always wear a dress to show them that I’m proud to be a woman’. I can see the idea behind that and this Lady Doctor wasn’t a vicious bitch like her colleagues, but she did know that some of her colleagues were sexually abusing their patients which might be why so many of the patients were in such distress. The nicer Lady Doctor wearing a dress wasn’t going to be sufficient to address that…

I could supply readers with many more laffs, the point that I am making is that the Top Docs and co are frequently as thick as yak shit and narrow minded with it and of course in north Wales and other areas they were preparing their patients for the sex trade. There are also many Top Docs and their colleagues with serious problems themselves in terms of body image, eating disorders etc and in in abusive relationships. Then there are the swathes on anti-depressants or who have alcohol problems… Dysfunction is everywhere among them and often their children.

Until the end of his life, Randall continued to refer to patients, including post-operatives, by the pronouns of their birth gender and would tell a male to female accepted for surgery that ‘you’ll always be a man’. This won’t have reflected any clinical position of Randell’s, it’ll just have been Randell trying to be as offensive as possible. The general psychiatry patients will have been asked to discuss their anxieties and then the info will have been used to cause them as much distress as possible. Marjorie Dawes is far more realistic than people who are not Empowered Service Users ever realise.

Most patients described Randell as brusque, rude and cold. However the model Tula aka Bond girl Caroline Cossey found him to be ‘absolutely charming’. Tula equated to Randell’s idea of what a woman was. Esther claimed that Sir Nicholas Fairbairn was absolutely charming and he was a child molesting, wife-beating drunk. See previous posts. If one wants to achieve stardom, one is obliged to say that foul people are absolutely charming.

Randell is the doctor who told Christopher Wilson, the author of Dancing With The Devil: The Windsors and Jimmy Donahue, that Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, had Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. This rumour was doing the rounds, but one needs to ask how would Randell have known and if he did know for certain, what was he doing breaching confidentiality? The Royals are not immune from being kicked in the chops by the Top Docs, when I worked at St George’s, 1989-91, the gynae records of a member of the Royal Family were being passed around and were the source of much ribaldry and moralising. I suspect that this person had been smeared by the Top Docs for the same reason that Wallis Simpson was, but I am saying no more lest the target is identified.

Other patients of Randell’s included Rachel Padman, the physicist and Alice Purnell, the activist.

Purnell as a boy was sexually and physically abused at prep school by the Headmaster who was later convicted. Purnell worked as a research chemist and volunteer with the Samaritans. In 1965 Purnell, with Sylvia Carter, founded the Beaumont Society for transvestites. Initially there were almost as many overseas members as in the UK, with some in Malaysia, Kenya and other parts of the Commonwealth. Alice became the overseas contact person because of her French. Regional contacts were appointed but were often the only member in their region. Purnell was offered surgery by John Randell in 1966, but turned it down and married a woman instead, going on to have a family with her.

Alice was on Radio 4 with agony aunt Claire Raynor. Raynor knew about Top Doctors facilitating abuse, including Dafydd et al, many years ago. She kept quiet because she wanted a media career as Claire Rayner. See previous posts. Alice attended the TV/TS conferences at Leeds University in 1974, and Leicester University in 1975 – the latter was organized by the Beaumont Society. Leeds and Leicester were both host to paedophile/trafficking gangs directly linked to Dafydd’s gang. Also in 1975, Alice was a co-founder of the Beaumont Trust, a registered charity, which separately from the Beaumont Society, set up a helpline and published educational booklets on transgender topics. In 1976 Alice became Vice-President of the Beaumont Society, and President a year later.

In 1977, Alice trained as a nurse, specializing in geriatric services. She then worked as such for 26 years, at one time becoming a matron, including nursing support for transgender surgery.

She finally had surgery in 1982 after the dissolution of her marriage and remained President of the Beaumont Society until 1984. Alice joined HBIGDA (now WPATH) and attended its European meetings. She found that they were dominated by US concerns and that the Standards of Care were mainly to protect the surgeons and that the emphasis was on psychiatry rather than on psychology/counselling. Alice organized the first of the GENDYS conferences which was held at Manchester University in 1990, a conference which brought together each type of professional who deals with trans persons and each type of trans person. There were a further seven GENDYS conferences.

After obtaining a Masters degree in counselling and psychology, Alice co-founded the Gender Trust. It was a registered charity intended to help transgender rather than transvestite persons. Alice has lived most of her life in Sussex, the location of Dafydd’s partner gang as well as the brothels to which John Allen trafficked kids in care from north Wales.

Alice Purnell was awarded an OBE in the 2012 New Years Honours List, ‘for services to Transgender People’.  Alice Purnell contributed “Why does transexuality exist?” and “TV, TG, TS – What’s in a label?” in Michael Trevor Haslam’s volume Transvestism: A Guide. Beaumont Trust, 1993. Michael Haslam was one of the psychiatrists who starred in the Kerr-Haslam scandal. Haslam and his colleague William Kerr were Top Docs based in Yorkshire who raped and assaulted their female patients over decades under the guise of ‘sex therapy’. Numerous complaints were made about them by patients and a la Dafydd, their activities were openly discussed. An Angel who raised concerns was demoted and a Professor at Leeds who complained about them was told to shut it or he’d lose his job. There was no investigation until the 1990s when Kerr and Haslam were approaching retirement. Only one of them was imprisoned and not for very long. See post ‘All The Ingredients Of A Scandal’. One woman patient who had been assaulted by them was told that she would not be allowed to amend the records that they compiled about her. When the scandal finally hit the media, representatives of MIND who had ignored my complaints about those we know and love in north Wales appeared on prime time TV declaring that they were shocked and disgusted.

John Randell died of a heart attack in 1982. Just as Mary Wynch’s litigation against Dafydd and the gang began to move in the direction of the Master of the Rolls…

I don’t know whether the offensive John Randell of Charing Cross had offspring who became Top Docs as so many Top Docs do, but there is a Dr John Randall who was/is the Clinical Lead for the Blackburn with Darwen NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. His surname is Randall rather than Randell, but one look at Dr Randall’s biography tells us that he will know about the ring in the north west of England which was facilitated by Dafydd’s mates:

Dr Randall, MB ChB, MRCGPDRCOG, DipOccMED, qualified from Manchester University in 1988. He completed his hospital vocational training in Blackburn before becoming a GP in his current practice, in 1992; he is GP Principal at Oakenhurst Medical Practice in Barbara Castle Health Centre. Prior to the CCG forming in 2013, Dr Randall was a lead GP in Cardio Vascular Health for Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust from 2002 until 2008.  As well as working in Occupational Medicine in various Lancashire industries, he was elected by his colleagues to the Local Medical Committee in 2011 and subsequently Vice Chair in 2012. He is a passionate advocate in emphasising the true value of family medicine. Dr Randall is married with three teenage children.  His interests outside of medicine include Manchester City FC, exploring the Highlands of Scotland and long distance running.

John Randell the offensive git from Charing Cross is all over the internet on trans websites; I note that he was linked with many of those we know and love who have starred on this blog before, particularly the lunatic Cardiff University contingent such as Dr Roy Mottram, who was a leading light in the Beaumont Society, along with Alice Purnell. See previous posts. The medical students at Cardiff in the 1980s knew that Mottram et al were bonkers and to be avoided and by the time that they were junior doctors they knew about Dafydd’s gang, about George Thomas, the lot. Those who didn’t want to be forced out of medicine and have their lives destroyed kept quiet about all of it. Those docs are now in their late 50s/early 60s and occupy roles as Professors and leaders of the profession. The gang rape of children and murders of witnesses. They knew about it.

After the offensive git from Charing Cross blocked Julia Grant’s surgery, Julia found another surgeon who Helped, Dr Michael Royle. After her gender reassignment surgery, Julia subsequently haemorrhaged, collapsed and nearly died. She was taken to hospital and was accused of having performed an abortion on herself. The Top Docs didn’t even realise that Julia didn’t have a uterus in which to gestate a foetus to abort, but had in fact undergone reassignment surgery which had gone horribly wrong. Julia believed that the Top Docs didn’t understand what had happened because in those days gender reassignment was so rare. No, they were either grossly incompetent or they knew that Julia had crossed the path of the Fuhrer in Charing Cross so like Brown and I, Julia was on the blacklist and competent healthcare would never be forthcoming. I have not read anything that suggests that Dr Michael Royle, the surgeon who nearly killed Julia and left her with lifelong disabilities, was ever the focus of an investigation.

When the documentary about Julia Grant that I watched was screened, I was in the throes of Empowered Service Userdom and was regularly being arrested by Dafydd’s gang on the grounds of their perjury. I watched the documentary with Patient F and we discussed how Julia’s life had been wrecked by the Top Docs. A few days later we discussed the programme with Ella Fisk, the Angel who ran the day centre at the Hergest Unit. Ella told us that she was incensed by Randell’s treatment of his patient and that when she was young, she had known a lot of Top Docs like that, but now things were very different. Ella knew about Dafydd and the gang. She knew that at the very time that she had that discussion with me, that I had no idea that Tony Francis had for years being forging documents and evidence about my alleged ‘dangerousness’, that he was still doing this and that Francis and Dafydd had collected ‘evidence’ from numerous third parties, even from people with links to the gang who knew me in Somerset when I was a teenager, which was being accumulated to justify my incarceration in a secure hospital.

Ella didn’t conduct herself like they did, I liked Ella, but she knew what they were doing and did not raise any concerns. I suspect that Ella was terrified of them. But the security services knew what they were doing as well and they didn’t stop them either.

There is a lot of info about the Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic and it’s history online; it is fascinating stuff and I could be blogging about that alone for several posts, so I’ll just make a few brief observations here. People involved with the Charing Cross GIC were also involved with the Albany Trust, which has at times conducted out research in support of paedophilia. The Albany Trust received Home Office funding when Leon Brittan was Home Secretary.

Rachael Webb underwent gender reassignment surgery as a result of a referral from Charing Cross. I encountered Rachael Webb when I worked at Bangor University. After Brown and I had appeared in the media discussing the parlous state of the mental health services, Rachael began e mailing me. That was fine by me, we received communication from a few people who had been treated appallingly but who’s complaints had got nowhere and one couple were in hiding after having received threats. However it became clear that Rachael’s reason for contacting me wasn’t to support an improved deal for the targets of those we know and love. Rachael asked Brown and I to act as expert witnesses to help her to get her HGV licence back after she had lost it as the result of a drink driving conviction. I explained that we were sociologists, we were in no position to act as expert medical witnesses. She suggested that we should just lie. I said no. So Rachael offered to pay us to lie. I said no and Rachael told me that it was OK to lie as an expert witness, a Top Doctor had done it before for her… He was probably called Dafydd.

John Randell’s partner in crime, Peter Phillip, who performed the surgery on those whom Randell deemed suitable on the basis that they had the characteristics of Real Women and wore nylons, girdles, ran a duster over the shelves daily and couldn’t do science, was a urologist. Virtually all trace of Peter Phillip has been eliminated from the internet. North Wales however has its very own Peter Phillip, in terms of a urologist who was enthusiastic about gender reassignment surgery. I am talking about Dr Chris aka Christine Evans, a local celeb in Denbighshire. Dr Chris is a retired surgeon who worked at the lethal Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, but like Dafydd, Dr Chris continued working after retirement and used this to protect Dafydd’s gang. Dr Chris also served as a Councillor for Prestatyn and was a mover and shaker behind ‘The Raven’, a community pub. Dr Chris helpfully wrote a blog in her capacity as a Councillor, in which she explained that she would ensure that the jobs of her surgeon colleagues at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd would be protected now that they were under threat. Were these surgeons local heroes, dedicated to their patients? No. They were grossly incompetent, had killed a few too many people and openly boasted that they were running the ‘service’ for their convenience, not for that of the patients. They were so bad that even the Royal College of Surgeons wrote a report condemning them and saying that the situation could not be allowed to continue. Call Dr Chris!

The surgeons of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd had disgraced themselves to such a degree that no-one would listen to the word of a surgeon from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, so Dr Chris couldn’t wield influence in that way. Dr Chris hit on a better ruse. Dr Chris doubled up as a Patients’ Champ and got her mates to appoint her to the post of Leader of the North Wales Community Health Council, the Patients’ Voice and Watchdog. It wasn’t difficult for Dr Chris to do this, because the CHC appointments are not in the gift of a democratic vote on the part of any group of patients, they are instead the responsibility of the Welsh Gov’t and County Councils. Dr Chris wasn’t the only Top Doc on the CHC; there was a GP from Anglesey as well as Dr Sadie Francis. Other CHC members included Councillors and their relatives or other NHS staff and their friends and relatives. More recently, Eleanor Burnham, a former Lib Dem AM who was a social work manager and member of the Mental Health Tribunal for the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, arrived on the CHC after poor old Dr Chris resigned in the wake of revelations re her agenda. See previous posts…

When Dr Chris was the Patients’ Voice, the CHC simply refused to investigate complaints about the mental health services, as well as many other matters. Dr Chris had to attend the Betsi Board meetings in her capacity as the Patients’ Champ, so Dr Chris would turn up for the meeting, stay for the first 15 minutes during which time she would Give Her Orders and then would walk out, leaving everyone else to remain for the rest of the 2 hour (or longer) meeting.

I studied Dr Chris and I noticed that she was of the variety of Lady Surgeon who was so butch that she certainly wouldn’t pass John Randall’s Femininity Test. Dr Chris, being a urologist, was well-known for operating on men’s bits and she would use her status in this regard to intimidate men. All men, not just men upon whom she had operated. This is a known technique of Lady Doctors like Dr Chris; Dr Chris had a reputation among women patients of being a crude old bag who was not to be taken seriously, but men are less likely to take the piss out of the Dr Chris’s of the earth. It’s OK men, we did it for you! Dr fucking Chris had no idea of the hilarity that she elicited, which was how I was able to gather so much info on her and publicise why she had led a Military Coup at the CHC.

Dr Chris was a friend of Tony Francis.

Dr Chris enjoyed photo opportunities and during her Brave Battle to defend the jobs of the mates of a gang of paedophiles who were maiming and killing their patients. Dr Chris had her photo taken with Wales’s most famous transgender person and indeed one of the most well-known trans people in the world, the travel writer Jan Morris. When Jan was James, she was part of the 1953 Everest expedition team, along with Sir Charles Evans, the Principal of UNCW for so many years… Jan and her son Twm Morys, another well-known Welsh writer, were generous in their praise of Dr Chris. Jan used to be a posh English man from Oxford but he reinvented himself as a Welsh woman of the proletariat. Jan’s son Twm spent his early years in Oxford, then went to Shrewsbury School, but he too is now a patriotic Welshman. I have no objection to this, of course it’s great when people who migrate to Wales love the country and Jan and Twm are both talented writers, but they have certainly provided much good PR for some very unpleasant people. See previous posts…

Jan Morris was one of John Randell’s patients in the early 1960s. Randell did offer Jan surgery but she could only have surgery in the UK if she divorced her wife, which, to Jan’s credit, she refused to do. So Jan went to Casablanca and had surgery there. Jan’s book ‘Conundrum’ provided an account of it. Jan has not suffered at the hands of John Randell, Dr Chris et al in the way that so many others have, because Jan is posh, she has money and is a famous writer. So the Top Docs who butcher and abuse the proles use Jan for a bit of free publicity when anyone dares challenge them.

The security services knew that John Randell was a dangerous doctor who was part of a network facilitating serious organised crime. No-one stopped him. Hundreds of vulnerable, desperate patients continued to be sent into his jaws, as well as into the jaws of his mates.

So why did you let it happen then MI5? It wasn’t just me, I was just one who happened to survive. Where were the public warnings? Why were patients not told?

Julia Grant was part of the LGBT scene in Manchester in the 1980s and 90s. She knew about Bob Hobson et al and she knew about the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal as well. I bet that Julia also knew about Sir Peter Morrison in Chester and the Westminster Paedophile Ring. If a kid who had grown up in care in north Wales could tell me some 10 yrs ago about the ‘vice ring’ in Buck House involving Backstairs Billy aka William Tallon, the Queen Mum’s loyal retainer who died from an HIV related illness in 2007, why was that vice ring only reported in the media recently? It was in existence by the 1980s and probably years before then.

Now don’t you worry my dear, we’ll look after you…

Bloody War stock photo

An major issue of national security and indeed international security, this network of traffickers jetted off abroad and had a global network. MI5 infiltrated the network successfully years ago, yet they did not stop the abuse of patients, some of whom died. They did not protect people like my friends and I who had begun to realise the enormity of the wrongdoing, instead they did all that they could to put us out of action. Meanwhile a constant source of prey for those we know and love were Referred For Help. Whatever MI5 did do about those we know and love, it was far too little too late. You needed a plant in medicine who would have brought down the Top Docs 30 yrs ago C or M or whatever your name is. That was where the source of the biggest problem was.

Recent posts have explained how Dafydd was a personal mate of Harold Wilson’s Health Minister, 1964-68, Sir Kenneth Robinson. Like David Ennals, Robinson was a big wig in MIND, so helped Dafydd from that angle as well as during the course of his job in Gov’t. I explained in one of my comments following my post ‘The Big Questions’ that I have just acquired a copy of Richard Crossman’s ‘Diaries’. I have already spotted some treasures in Vol III, 1968-70, regarding Brian Abel-Smith and Peter Shore.

Professor Brian Abel-Smith was the LSE economist who designed the flawed economic model which underpinned Nye’s NHS and who oversaw the escalating problems for the next few decades until in 1978, even Abel-Smith gave up with the  civil wars and the intransigent and greedy Top Docs and left his role as a DHSS adviser to take a job as adviser to Peter Shore, the Labour MP for Stepney, 1964-74 and for Tower Hamlets, Stepney and Poplar, then Bethnal Green and Stepney, 1974-97.

Abel-Smith went to work for Peter Shore when Shore was Secretary of State for the Environment and  advised Shore on housing and urban planning issues.

Shore was the MP for a constituency in which Dafydd’s partner gang was busy. Kids in care from Shore’s patch were sent to children’s homes in north Wales. Shore sprang into action to keep the gang out of serious slurry again in the mid-late 1980s, when the HIV infected kids in care who had been trafficked back to the East End as rent boys began dying of AIDS. Shore extracted funding out of Ken Clarke at the DoH to convert the disused Mildmay Mission Hospital in Shoreditch into an AIDS hospice. The victims of John Allen and Dafydd’s gang died in invisibility as their Confidentiality Was Protected, because they were People Who Were Stigmatised. See post ‘Apocalypse Now’.

Shore was Head of the Labour Party’s Research Dept, 1959-64. He was PPS to the PM Harold Wilson, 1965-66; Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Technology, 1966-67 and the Dept of Economic Affairs, 1967-69; Minister Without Portfolio, 1969-70; and in 1969, Deputy Leader of the Commons. In 1974 Shore became Secretary of State for Trade and in 1976, Secretary of State for the Environment. See previous posts for more info on Peter Shore who along with a few others was once A Future Leader Of The Labour Party.

Shore’s constituency was the turf of Lord Elwyn-Jones and his artist wife, Pearl Binder and their social worker son. See previous posts…

Abel-Smith was gay – it was why he turned down the offer of a safe Labour seat, he feared that his ‘private life’ would be made public and cause huge damage – and he and his partner ran a gents outfitters/fashion chain which flogged clothes to the best, including the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and the Who. Dafydd’s gang procured sex workers for those on the rock and pop scene at that time. See previous posts for info…

Abel-Smith was appointed Prof of Social Administration at the LSE in 1965, the year that he launched his fashion chain. He was a member of the South West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, 1956-63; Chairman of the Chelsea and Kensington Hospital Management Committee, 1962-62; a Governor of Tommy’s, 1957-68 and of the Maudsley and Institute of Psychiatry, 1963-67. Abel-Smith was a Governor of every institution in which Dafydd and his mates were facilitating a sex abuse ring. Abel-Smith served as a Senior Adviser to the Secretary of State for the DHSS, 1968-70 and was reappointed in 1974.

A gang of paedophiles ran the NHS and things were arranged to ensure that they were placed in positions which enabled them to do this. Brown has told me for years that a great many people’s careers and liberty depended upon and still depend upon Dafydd remaining unchallenged, no matter what he did/does.

I have also learnt from Crossman’s Diaries that Peter Shore’s wife was a Formidable Lady Doctor, Dr Elizabeth Shore. Prior to marrying Shore, she was Dr Elizabeth Wrong no less. Dr Wrong married Peter Shore in 1948. She was a Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London; a Member, Royal College of Surgeons; a Fellow, Faculty of Community Medicine; a Member, Royal College of Physicians, London.

Dr Elizabeth Shore was Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the DHSS, 1977- 1984, while the Secretaries of State for the DHSS were David Ennals, then Patrick Jenkin, then Norman Fowler. While Dr Liz was at the top of the DHSS, Mary Wynch was unlawfully arrested and imprisoned, kids in care in north Wales were being gang raped, trafficked, fitted up for criminal offences and found dead, as were psych patients. Gwynne the lobotomist was sitting in the UCNW Student Heath Centre running the trafficking ring and Brown and I were openly threatened. St George’s were running their ring in south London, assisted by the Maudsley and others… At the DHSS, Health Minister Lord Simon Glenarthur – who for years was a Director of the MDU, which supplied the legal advisers to Dafydd and the Drs Francis, legal advisers who knew that all three of them had perjured themselves when they demanded my imprisonment – ordered the NHS to use blood products purchased from the US known to be infected with Hep B and HIV. Thousands of patients became infected and many have died, more will do. See previous posts.

It was when Dr Liz was Deputy CMO that Patient F found out about the boys in the Ty Newydd children’s home in Bangor being violently assaulted by their social workers. Patient F challenged the social workers about it and dared tell other people. He was soon visited by the Drug Squad, fitted up for class A drugs, then for arson, then imprisoned in Risley Remand Centre where he heard what was probably a murder of an inmate by the screws, was then transferred to the ‘care’ of Dafydd, who sectioned him for a year in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh… In 1993, the gang prevented F having any access to his new baby after accusing him of being a risk to the baby and placed the baby with a family containing two known child abusers. F never saw his son again.

Patrick Jenkin was a member of Middle Temple, alongside Ronnie Waterhouse and was of the same vintage as Ronnie. When questioned on matters of equal pay, Patrick Jenkin stated that if God had wanted us to have equal pay, He would not have created Man and Woman. And when they say no they mean yes. Jenkin’s son Lord Bernard and Bernard’s Lady wife are both busy Tory peers. See previous posts.

Norman Fowler was the man who, along with Dr Liz’s boss Sir Donald Acheson – another mate of Dafydd’s – persuaded Thatch to agree to the AIDS public education programme, although Thatch had traumas over the references to the words ‘back passage’, by explaining to her than those friends and Ministers of hers who were forcing their members into the back passages of the boys in care in north Wales and elsewhere were at serious risk of contracting a virus which would kill them and even BUPA wouldn’t be able to save their lives. Someone explained to Thatch that when Peter Morrison had anal sex with kids in care, his penis ruptured the capillaries in their back passages and HIV, being carried in body fluids, was a lot more likely to be transmitted than when Denis did the business with Thatch via her front bottom. Although had Denis been infected, Thatch would not have been 100% safe. Which is why the people forced into sex work by Dafydd charged extra for Doing It Without A Condom. See previous posts for more Acheson and Fowler-related fun.

Thatch allowed the public education campaigned but she was shocked and disgusted at What They Did and we really Didn’t Need To Hear About It All The Time.

Dr Liz was Dean of Postgrad Medicine for the North-West Thames Region, 1985-93 and Dean of Postgrad Medical Education for the North Thames Region, 1993-95.

Dr Liz was a Director of the Medical Women’s Federation, 1991-92 and the Policy Studies Institute, 1992-98.

Dr Liz was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1980. As Mary Wynch finally emerged from the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and Mr Thrope had just a few months previously been found Not Guilty.

Dr Liz became Lady Shore of Stepney on 5 June 1997, when her people trafficking husband became Lord Shore, as the world called the former kids in care who were by then giving evidence to the Waterhouse Inquiry liars because they had criminal convictions – witnesses to Dafydd’s criminality ended up with criminal convictions, even those who were medical researchers with postgrad degrees – and drug problems. One of the Shores’ children died as a result of illicit drug use.

The Shores were a couple of swells who lived in the best hotels.

We’ve got a Lady Doctor if you’d prefer to see her!

Can you just find me one who’s not a bloody sociopath working for a gang of sex offenders, male, female or intersex, I don’t mind really?

They All Did it To Help The Poor!

Roman Road, Bow in the 1960s

  • Bethnal Green, where in 1986, I and my friends were threatened by sex offenders and nasties linked to Dafydd’s gang (see previous posts eg. ‘The Turn Of The Screw’), was on Lord and Lady S’s manor. The area has now been gentrified, so the Poor who were Helped can’t afford to live there any longer.

The Human Stain

Yesterday’s edition of the Torygraph published the obituary of Gwilym Edffrwd Roberts, the Labour MP for South Bedfordshire, 1966-70 and Cannock, 1974-83, who died in March 2018.

Gwilym Roberts was educated at Brynrefail Grammar School and UCNW (Bangor University), where he did a degree in economics and maths. He taught at Northampton Institute, 1952-57 and at Hendon College (now Middlesex University), 1957-66. Roberts specialised in scientific management techniques.

Gwilym Roberts stood unsuccessfully for Ormskirk in 1959 and for Conway in 1964. So a man who had grown up in the bosom of an earlier generation of paedophiles’ friends targeted a seat which was at the heart of another abuse ring and then had a go at the paedophiles’ friends’ favourite seat of Conway, which was won that year by paedophiles’ friend the Tory Peter Thomas (see post ‘The Cradle Of Filth’).

Roberts was said to have ‘put down roots’ in Luton – although why a Welsh speaking Welshman who flagged up his Welshness at every opportunity and had wanted to be an MP for a seat in north Wales decided upon Luton as a suitable site for growing his roots is not explained – and served as a councillor on Luton Borough Council from 1965. Roberts won the seat of South Bedfordshire in 1966, but lost it in 1970.

Roberts was subsequently selected as the Labour candidate for the seat of Cannock Chase, which Jennie Lee had lost in 1970.  Roberts held Cannock Chase from Feb 1974 until 1983. Cannock Chase was a constituency located at the site of a notorious child abuse ring which finally became public knowledge in 1989 as a result of the Staffordshire Pindown Scandal. A Public Inquiry into Pindown was conducted by Barbara Kahan and Allan Levy QC, which as usual admitted that serious abuse had happened but didn’t admit how serious or that it had been known about for a long while and concealed.

Kahan and Levy themselves had concealed the abuse of children for years. Kahan was rotten through and through and as a social worker had worked with Louis Minster, who later became Richmond-Upon-Thames Council’s Director of Social Services and was named as a notorious paedophile in the south London ring who abused children at the Elm Guest House (see posts ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’ and ‘Another Episode of Friends…’). Kahan also worked with Peter Righton, the social work academic who used his work as a cover to abuse children. Kahan was appointed as senior adviser to the Home Office in 1970 and then to Keith Joseph when he was Secretary of State for Social Services. Khan continued working as a Gov’t adviser re children’s social work until 1980. Kahan was married to Top Doctor child psychiatrist Vladimir Kahan and they were based in Oxfordshire.

The child abuse gang in Staffordshire had a knock-on effect on the local NHS. The Mid-Staffs Scandal exploded in the early years of the new millennium, but there had been questions in the House about the NHS in Staffordshire whilst John Major was in power. Alan Johnson and Andy Burnham were the two Health Secretaries shamed as a result of covering up the many hundreds of deaths at Mid-Staffs, but things had gone wrong in Staffordshire many years previously – Councillors, MPs and the highest echelons of the NHS had sat on it all as death rates rocketed.

Between 1976-79, Gwilym Roberts was PPS to ‘Ministers in Industry’. So that would have been under Secretaries of State Tony Benn and Eric Varley. Both of whom knew about the abuse of vulnerable people but did nothing – even when I wrote to Tony Benn about north Wales… Eric Varley had such a deep and meaningful relationship with Gerald Kaufperson that after Kaufperson died it was discovered that Kaufperson had left everything in his will to Varley, cutting out his wife and children (see post ‘The Cradle Of Filth’).

Gwilym Roberts lost his seat to the Tory Gerald Howarth in 1983. In 1984 Roberts tried for the candidacy of Cynon Valley – just down the road from the molester George Thomas – but lost out to Ann Clwyd. In 1984 the paedophiles’ friends of Wales got a bit worried because George Thomas ended up in hospital as a result of the consequences of an STI and he thought that his cover was about to be blown. Thomas’s mate Leo Abse saved the day by organising the release of a statement claiming that Thomas had prostate trouble (see post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’). Up in Bangor, the paedophiles’ friends were getting vexed because Brown and I refused to shut up about Gwynne the lobotomist.

So Gwilym thought that his services might be needed in south Wales at that time…

Gwilym couldn’t have been overcome with a yearning to return to his homeland just for the hell of it because after not being selected to fight Cynon Valley, Roberts stood in Cannock and Burntwood (his old constituency which had been subject to boundary changes) in 1987, but the sitting MP Gerald Howarth increased his majority.

After Roberts lost his seat, he resumed his career in local government, serving as leader of Cannock Chase District Council, where he represented the Rugeley ward of Brereton and Ravenhill until losing his seat in 2002. He served as a Labour Councillor on Staffordshire County Council, representing Brereton and Ravenhill, 1985-93 and again between 2001-09, which incorporated a slightly larger area than the district council ward of the same name. Roberts retired from membership of the County Council in 2010.

Gwilym Roberts was a Director of the South Staffordshire NHS Trust.

After Roberts died, Philip Atkins, the leader of Staffordshire County Council, said: ‘Gwilym was a well-respected figure in the Council chamber, who brought a great deal of knowledge and insight from his own Welsh upbringing to bear on the issues facing the authority. He devoted his life to public service and while strongly representing the people in his division, he worked for the betterment of everyone in the county.’

Except of course the victims of child abusers and the lethal local NHS.

Councillor Sue Woodward, the opposition Labour group leader on Staffordshire County Council, said: ‘Gwilym was a real battler for this area. He was always a conscientious MP and Councillor who showed great dedication in representing local people. These days it is hard to come by public servants of his pedigree. It is a sad loss, but he had a good innings and led a very fruitful and fulfilled life.’

Gwilym probably reached a ripe old age because he kept well away from the local hospitals as a patient.

Cannock Chase councillor Derek Davis, who served alongside Mr Roberts on the council for 20 years, said: ‘He had some wonderful attributes and was an excellent constituency MP. When he was elected he was like a breath of fresh air. A lot of us thought the world of him. I always remember that although he spent so much time in Staffordshire, he never got rid of his strong Welsh accent.’

Pass the Bara Brith, it’s always good for the image if one is a politician concealing serious crime.

Councillor Frank Allen, who represents Cannock North on Cannock Chase District Council, said: ‘It is fair to say that he was the best constituency MP that I have ever known.’

Yes, Pindown and Mid-Staffs didn’t become public for years…

Frank added that ‘He was on the ball and really knew what was going on’. Other people all remembered Gwilym as a man who, whilst both a Councillor and an MP, went out and about meeting people and finding out what was happening on the ground. Roberts took an interest in the quality of spectacle frames offered by the NHS and the price of spuds. In 1968 Roberts wanted a ban on excessive pop music because he believed that it gave his constituents headaches. In 1970 he entertained the House by attempting to pass legislation outlawing witches. Other matters with which Gwilym concerned himself included the safety of fireworks, the risks from old fridges which had been abandoned, motorway safety with regard to coach travel and football hooliganism.
As leader of Staffordshire County Council, 1992-99, Gwilym Roberts was instrumental in helping bring new industry to the area after the colliery closures, specifically the multi-million pound development of the Towers Business Park in Rugeley. Keele University Science and Innovation Centre is located on the Towers Business Park.
Keele University is located in Staffordshire. Peter Righton worked there as did Jane Tunstill, who was Prof of Social Work Studies. Jane Tunstill was one of the panel on the Jillings Investigation into the abuse of children in care in Clwyd County Council. The 1996 Jillings Report was so heavily redacted that it was meaningless and on the legal advice of Michael Beloff QC, Cherie’s colleague and friend, it was witheld from everyone, even the Clwyd Councillors, for 17 years (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake…’). Jillings and his team did state that they had concluded that the most serious abuse of children had taken place since the late 1960s and probably for much longer. They refused to comment on whether they thought that a paedophile ring was in operation. There was a belief that Jillings had played down the seriousness of the abuse of children in north Wales.
It was whilst the Jillings Investigation was underway that I wrote to Michael Mansfield about what was happening to me in north Wales. Michael wrote me a one line reply thanking me for my letter. And probably picked up the phone straight away to his mates Beloff or Cherie. Michael Beloff’s dad Max wrote the glowing reviews for a book written by Ioan Bowen Rees, who was the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council whilst the paedophile ring was in full swing within the Gwynedd Social Services (see post ‘I Know Nuzzing…’). Ioan was in post when I was harassed and threatened by his social workers – which is what I wrote to Michael Mansfield about in 1993.
Jane Tunstill is now Emeritus Prof of Social Work at Royal Holloway, University of London and currently appears on the King’s College London website. Jane is the Making Research Count Advisor and has conducted evaluation studies for Action for Children. Action for Children was previously known as the National Children’s Home. People involved with the abuse of children in north Wales had previously worked for NCH and George Thomas was Patron of NCH. Jane has also advised Gov’t on Sure Start and Safeguarding. Jane has conducted a review for the NSPCC and is now working for local authorities. Jane has so many fingers in so many pies that I can only recommend that readers google her.
Witnesses and victims were killed in north Wales Jane and you knew how serious the situation was.
Charlotte Williams, a colleague of the paedophile gang of north Wales for years, left her post at Bangor University some 10 years ago and was given a Chair at Keele (see post ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’).
Alun Michael, the former First Secretary of Wales, was a student at Keele University and became a youth worker. Alun Michael resigned as First Secretary at the precise time that the Waterhouse Report was published.
So how did Gwilym Roberts persuade Gov’t to invest all that money in the Towers Business Park?
In 2001 Gwilym was listed as a Director for Staffordshire Business Support Ltd…
Gwilym Roberts campaigned on matters relating to industrial diseases, including silicosis. Silicosis clobbered a lot of the slate quarrymen in north Wales and there was a long running battle over the matter of their compensation. Successive Gov’ts made themselves very unpopular by refusing to stump up for the quarrymen and then when they did finally agree to, by taking as long as possible to organise the payments, by which time most of the quarrymen had died. Dafydd Wigley earned many brownie points by taking up the quarrymen’s cause. Lord Wigley did not take up the cause of the victims of Dafydd and the paedophiles. In Bethesda and the surrounding villages, there were quarrymen disabled by silicosis as well as the victims of Dafydd and the paedophiles. The quarrymen were scandalously sold short. The victims of the paedophiles were framed and sent to prison or found dead.
In 1969 Gwilym marched with Cap’n Bob in protest at the proposed siting of the third London airport on the frignes of Gwilym’s constituency.
Gwilym Roberts was the Vice-President of the Institute of Statisticians. So he would have spotted the sky high mortality rates in the Staffordshire NHS. He was also a consultant for Littlewoods.
In 1980 Gwilym – who was on the left of the Labour Party – suspected that his phone had been tapped when his voice was broadcast over a tannoy in Staffordshire whilst he was talking privately (or so he believed) to a constituent. Yes, he was on the left of the party, he will have been bugged. The folk doing the tapping will have known that Gwilym was concealing organised child abuse but that wasn’t what they were worried about…

After his time on Staffordshire County Council, Gwilym remained in the area, living in Rugeley. In 1855, Rugeley gained notoriety when a local doctor, William Palmer, was accused of murdering an acquaintance, John Parsons Cook (who is buried in a still visible grave in the local St Augustine’s churchyard). It was claimed that Cook had been poisoned and in the months that followed, Palmer was implicated in the deaths of several other people, including his own wife and brother and possibly even some of his own children. He was put on trial for the murder of Cook in 1856 and an Act of Parliament was passed to allow the trial to be held at the Old Bailey, as it was felt that a fair jury could not be found in Staffordshire. Palmer was found guilty of murder and hanged publicly outside Stafford Gaol on 14 June 1856.

They like keeping up local traditions in Staffordshire.

I mentioned that Gwilym was elected for Jennie Lee’s former seat. Baroness Jennie Lee was the Labour MP for Cannock, 1945-70. Jennie Lee was of course Nye Bevan’s wife. The ‘Express and Star’ newspaper published a photo of Gwilym Roberts unveiling a bust of Nye Bevan in Cannock Chase Hospital. Cannock Chase Hospital was managed by Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.

No-one is allowed to say anything remotely rude about Nye Bevan these days, but Nye Bevan and Jennie Lee were not popular in some quarters.

The Top Docs famously hated Nye Bevan and would only co-operate with the establishing of the NHS because he famously stuffed their mouths with gold. But some people on the left also didn’t like Bevan and Lee because they maintained that they were over-indulgent champagne socialists – they certainly did live a very high life. Champagne socialists are OK by me if they continue to work on behalf of people having a harder time then them, but Jennie Lee and Nye Bevan ignored the needs of some very desperate people. Such as the victims of child abuse, as well as psychiatric patients and the learning disabled. People in Gov’t did know what was happening to them at the time but the extent of the abuse was concealed because it was so serious.

The child abuse rings in Staffordshire and south Wales were in place when Lee and Bevan were shopping in Harrods and spraying the champagne around. Nye’s new NHS continued to ignore what was going on and the abuse of vulnerable people was institutionalised in the NHS from its inception. If readers are sceptical, just look at the data and policies. Such as the export of the child migrants to Australia and New Zealand when children of poor dispossessed people were removed from their parents – who were told that their children were going to a better life – and sent down under to work as slave labour for people who were horrendously cruel to them. That policy was followed for years, the NHS helped implement it and it is only during the last 15 years or so that the fate of the child migrants has become public. The deaths and abuse of patients in long stay NHS institutions which it is now acknowledged was routine was also concealed and denied by Gov’t and the NHS. The serious abuse of children in care was endemic and it is now admitted has been going on for decades, as far back as the foundation of the NHS. Every analysis shows that better off people receive far, far better care from the NHS than poor people do. That was the case when the NHS was first established and it is still the case now. The NHS did not challenge the elitism of the Top Doctors, it included it in the system.

Jennie Lee was Harold Wilson’s Minister for the Arts, 1964-70. She played a key role in establishing the Open University. Jennie was applauded for establishing the OU in the face of opposition from her boss in the DES at the time, which was Tony Crosland, as well as her Ministerial colleague Richard Crossman and the Treasury and the commercial broadcasters. Crosland and Crossman both concealed the abuse of children – Crosland when he was at Secretary of State for the DES (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’) and Crossman when he was Secretary of State for Social Services, 1968-70 (see post ‘These Sharks Are Crap As Well’). Jennie was helped considerably by Lord Arnold Goodman, who provided an estimate for the cost of establishing the OU which was very much lower than the actual cost. By the time it was realised how much the cost was going to be, it was too late to scrap the scheme.

Lord Goodman was Harold Wilson’s solicitor, adviser and good friend and was one of those who some believe assisted Harold in the corrupt deals which it was thought that he and Marcia Falkender were involved in (see post ‘No Ordinary Methods’). Arnold Goodman acted for Jeremy Thorpe after Thorpe was charged with conspiracy and incitement to murder Norman Scott. Goodman was Thorpe’s solicitor before Sir David Napley took over.

Betty Boothroyd was Chancellor of the OU, 1995-06. In 1996 after the suppression of the Jillings Report, Betty Boothroyd refused to allow Ann Clwyd to ask any questions in the House about the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal.

Jennie Lee renewed the charter of the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1967, which saw an expansion of its work in the regions as well of the creation of the new arts institutions at London’s South Bank Centre. The area around the South Bank Centre was the site of prostitution and rough sleeping. I wonder why there was a market for sex at that location?

Lord Goodman helped out on the Arts Council/South Bank Centre work as well.

Following the 1967 reshuffle, Jennie was promoted to Minister of State at the DES, after having been a junior Minister in the same Dept. It was during those years that Blair’s mate Ernest Armstrong used his connections with Tony Crosland to conceal the paedophile gang in the north east of England which had direct links to Dafydd and the paedophiles of north Wales. In 1968, John Allen opened the Bryn Alyn Community, which received loads of kids in the care of Councils in the north east of England.

Jennie lost her seat in 1970 to Lord Patrick Cormack, a friend of George Thomas, who was one of those who could not believe that Thomas was a child molester.

Jennie was Scottish and went to Edinburgh University, where she campaigned to have Bertrand Russell elected as Rector. Russell was a highly sexually exploitative man who inflicted serious damage on a number of the members of his immediate family with the help of Top Docs (see post ‘So Who Was Angry About What?’). For the last part of his life Russell lived in north west Wales and was networked to some of the people whom I know in an earlier era concealed child abuse in the region. I have uncovered a link between at least one of Russell’s circle and Dafydd, which I shall be blogging about further soon – the case of yet another abused woman who became an inconvenience and who ended up in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for decades.

Jennie Lee had an MA, LLB, teaching certificate and had worked as a teacher. She knew child abuse when she came across it.

Before Jennie Lee married Bevan, she had been involved with Frank Wise, a married civil servant, until his death in 1933. Lee married Bevan in 1934. Jennie Lee had a number of affairs whilst she was married to Bevan.

In Nov 1997, the paedophiles’ friend Lord K.O. Morgan (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’) had an article published in the Indie entitled ‘Jennie and the Awkward Squad’ in which Lord Ken heaped praise upon his favourite Labour Party wimmin – Barbara Castle, Shirl and Jennie. I’ve got news for Lord Ken – they were not ‘awkward’, they were ruthless women who achieved their own positions by doing the dirty work of some equally ruthless men and concealed the abuse of some very vulnerable people for political advantage. Furthermore Shirl didn’t even manage to stay in the Labour Party, she ran away with Dr Death and then ended up at sea with David Steel et al when Dr Death stomped off on his own. The David Steel who covered up Cyril Smith’s abuse of children and who described Jeremy Thorpe’s downfall as a ‘tragedy’ for Jeremy and the Liberal Party. Had Andrew Newton succeeded in killing Norman Scott, it would have been a tragedy for Norman as well.

Baroness Patricia Hollis wrote a biography of Jennie Lee and it seems to have been enough to have propelled her into the Lords. Her partner Lord Alan Howarth was the Thatcherite Tory who famously crossed the floor and joined the Labour Party just when Blair really needed him to and he then picked up a peerage from Blair a few years later (see post ‘News From Sicily’ and ‘Cottaging At Castle Gate’). Hollis and Howarth have both come under fire for milking the Lords’ expenses system.

One of Nye Bevan’s biggest fans – indeed he has written about Nye being his ‘hero’ – is the famously leftie Top Doc and staunch defender of the NHS, Julian Tudor Hart. Tudor Hart is considered a communist revolutionary by the medical establishment and he has published a great deal in socialist vehicles, staunchly defending the NHS and opposing all forms of private medicine. Tudor Hart really hates Ivan Illich, who wrote about the iatrogenic damage that the medical profession inflicts on patients.

Tudor Hart is very elderly now but still busy. He qualified in 1952, shortly after the establishment of the NHS and for five years worked as a GP in London. After that he worked as a GP in south Wales. It was Tudor Hart who in 1971 coined the phrase the ‘law of inverse care’, in which he claimed that those who need healthcare the most don’t get it. This is undoubtedly true, but Tudor Hart has consistently failed to analyse the reasons behind this and neither has his work – including all that policy advice to Gov’ts – made any impact on this unfortunate situation at all.

Tudor Hart is a keen researcher and has been involved in long term community studies. He is as near to a sociologist as a Top Doc can get. He retired as a GP in 1987 but continued to be involved in MRC research until 1992. Tudor Hart is also active in leftist politics. He lives in south Wales, on the Gower. Tudor Hart will have known how terrible the conditions at Ely Hospital were before the Ely Hospital Scandal in 1969, he’ll have known about the horrors of Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff and he’ll have known about the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. Tudor Hart will have known that George Thomas was molesting children – Thomas’s little ways were concealed by the Top Docs in south Wales and in return Thomas did a great deal of medical charidee work. I bet that Tudor Hart knew about the paedophile gangs in west Wales, south Wales and north Wales which were all linked together, as well as linked to the gangs in London and in Europe.

Julian Tudor Hart has a post at the Swansea College of Medicine.

Julian Tudor Hart’s partner in his GPs surgery was Dr Brian Gibbons. Gibbons was Health Minister in the Welsh Gov’t, 2005-07. I wrote to Gibbons and told him that I had documentary evidence of serious crime in the mental health services in north Wales and he wrote back telling me that ‘this correspondence is closed’. My very serious complaints – which included as assault on me by Angels and perjury on their behalf in an attempt to have me imprisoned – were never investigated. Gibbons was in post when lies were told about the Chief Exec of the NW Wales NHS Trust Keith Thomson ‘retiring’ after he was threatened with imprisonment by a High Court judge in Cardiff for witholding my medical records. Thomson didn’t retire, although he gave an interview to the ‘Daily Post’ saying that he was going to – he was given the job of the Chief Exec of the NHS Trust covering Pembrokeshire and west Wales. There was further chaos down there and Thompson retired again. Except that he didn’t, he stayed on to ‘advise the Board’.

After Gibbons sneaked Keith Thomson down to west Wales, Martin Jones became Chief Exec of the North West Wales NHS Trust. Martin was Thomson’s buddy and right hand man and had been involved with all of Thomson’s wrongdoing.  Under Martin Jones, the criminality on the part of NHS staff and the abuse of patients continued, as did the deaths and suicides. Martin was very keen on privatisation, as well as fiddling stats and using agency and locum staff to run the Trust which cost a fortune. Under Martin’s reign of terror, mental health patients were moved out of north west Wales many miles away to private hospitals in England, against their and their families wishes. After the Winterbourne View Scandal broke, it was revealed that some NW Wales NHS Trust patients had been placed in other units run by the company which owned and ran Winterbourne View.

Brian Gibbons is a member of the Socialist Health Association and maintains that he is completely opposed to private healthcare.

Gibbons presided over serious crime, the abuse of patients and a rocketing suicide rate in north Wales. He failed to investigate the most serious of matters. Gibbons is Irish, his father was Hugh Gibbons, a Fianna Fail politician. Gibbons came to the UK in 1976 to train as a GP in Calderdale in Yorkshire. Where there was a paedophile ring in operation on the territory of Jimmy Savile.

Gibbons was a partner in Tudor Hart’s practice in west Wales. Ioan Bowen Rees, the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council who presided over the paedophile ring in north Wales, had previously been the County Secretary for Dyfed County Council in west Wales. Where a paedophile gang operated in the Social Services.

If anyone knows why the son of an Irish politician chose to relocate to the UK and then spend the rest of his career facilitating organised child abusers who had links to big time drug dealers, please do let me know.

In 2007, Gibbons was moved from hos position as Health Minister and appointed Minister for Social Justice and Local Gov’t. He was succeeded as Minister for Health by Edwina Hart.

My problems with Martin Jones and the paedophiles and their friends escalated after Edwina was appointed. I was threatened, harassed, accused of crimes that I hadn’t committed and Martin Jones destroyed CCTV footage which showed an Angel threatening me, after my lawyer requested the footage. Two members of the public who complained to the hospital after they witnessed what was happening to me were threatened themselves by Ysbyty Gwynedd managers. I was unlawfully refused treatment repeatedly. I wrote to Edwina after every incident, giving her full details. Unlike Gibbons, she didn’t tell me that the correspondence was closed. She ordered Martin to investigate my complaints and he ignored her. I told Edwina that if Martin Jones was going to unlawfully refuse me NHS treatment, then the Welsh Gov’t had an obligation to make arrangements for me to have care elsewhere or private care. Edwina then wrote to me saying that I would not be getting private care or care from England and that she had done all that she could to ensure that I had access to health services, ignoring the fact that I had no access to healthcare at all.

It was widely known that Edwina and Martin hated each other and that Edwina was also facing a co-ordinated campaign from the BMA to have her removed from her post. Edwina was alleged to have said that she would not let Martin Jones privatise the NHS. Not only did Edwina fail to stop Martin doing that, but she allowed him to wreak death and destruction in the NHS and one look at the mortality figures whilst Martin was CEO make it clear that people died in very great numbers on his watch.

I am not underestimating what a nightmare dealing with Martin Jones must have been for Edwina. But there was a solution. I gave Edwina enough evidence for Martin and some of his fellow criminals to have been arrested and put on trial. If that had happened, the nightmare could have been addressed and a clean-up begun. Instead my life was put at risk by a bunch of gangsters – and Edwina.

Edwina was the AM for the Gower. She is pals with Julian Tudor Hart. He was one of her advisers. Edwina set up the Bevan Commission – ‘a group of international experts’ – to advise the Health Minister. Every member of the Bevan Commission can be categorised as a paedophiles’ friend, many have featured on this blog and most have been responsible for serious NHS failure. The Bevan Commission is housed at Swansea University and was set up on the 60th anniversary of the NHS. I will never forget the 60th anniversary of the NHS. That was the day on which I was refused treatment and had the phone slammed down on me five times by an Angel at Ysbyty Gwynedd – the very same Angel who’s threats towards me had been captured on CCTV, the footage of which Martin Jones destroyed. Two members of the public who tried to help me were also threatened by the Angel. Edwina knew all about it, I e mailed her the next day.

The NHS in north Wales is no longer functioning. Theresa May is pointing at Wales and using their NHS as an example of all that is laughable. You’ve certainly done a great job for promoting socialist medicine Gibbons and Edwina.

In 2011 Edwina was appointed the Minister for the Economy. I heard on more than one occasion that Edwina was involved in corrupt deals regarding the issuing of Welsh Gov’t business support grants. Then I was told by someone that a businessman on Anglesey received funding from Edwina’s Dept after she had slept with him. I was given sufficient details to suggest that my informant was telling the truth on this matter. I was told this several years ago and decided to keep it to myself to protect Edwina’s dignity. However, the behaviour of almost everyone who has been charged with running the NHS in north Wales has been so criminal, so shocking and so dangerously irresponsible, that I am not interested in protecting their dignity any longer.

If you thought that you could get away with behaving like this Edwina you foolish old cougar, you must be even more deluded than the old idiot Gibbons. Anglesey is a small place and your demands for sexual favours in return for business support funding caused much entertainment. Unfortunately your collusion with serious crime whilst you were Health Minister led to numerous deaths. You have brought complete disgrace upon Wales, along with the gangster Gibbons and the two spineless paedophiles’ colleagues who followed in your footsteps as Health Ministers, Lesley Griffiths and Mark Drakeford. The whole lot of you should be prosecuted.

He Knows Where The Bodies Are Buried

My post ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’ named a number of those close to Jeremy Thorpe as well as a few others who weren’t necessarily very fond of him but who concealed his wrongdoing, even that which was involved with allegedly trying to have his former gay lover Norman Scott assassinated. I mentioned that I suspected that some of those who covered for Jeremy were the same people who probably covered for Dafydd and Gwynne when they were younger. I’ve been doing a bit more research – it looks as though my suspicions were correct. Those around Jeremy had some very close links to members of the shithouse already named on this blog. So here’s a few details.

The Top Doctor at St George’s Hospital who treated Norman, Dr Brian O’Connell, will have been a key player – I covered him and his network in my post ‘The Case Of The King’s Sperm’. But many more people and networks supported and protected Jeremy.

Not a word appeared in the media about Thorpe’s activities until Andrew Newton, the man who maintained at Thorpe’s trial that he had been hired to kill Norman, shot Norman’s Great Dane Rinka dead on Exmoor and then tried to murder Norman. Yet Jeremy’s activities with Norman as well as others were widely known and discussed.

As described in ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’, some builders carrying out work on the former office of Jeremy’s friend Peter Bessell discovered a briefcase concealed in a false ceiling. The briefcase was full of incriminating material relating to Jeremy, including documents concerning Norman. The builders took it to the Sunday Mirror. Not only did the Sunday Mirror not publish a word but the Editor Bob Edwards personally returned the documents to Jeremy at Westminster.

Bob Edwards edited the Sunday Mirror between 1972-84. He knew how to keep powerful people onside.

Edwards joined the Labour Party when he was young and knew Ian Mikardo when Mikardo was the Labour MP for Reading. Mikardo alerted Edwards to a vacancy on Tribune and sent him along to meet the Editor, Michael Foot. Edwards edited Tribune between 1951-54. He then became the leader writer for the Evening Standard 1954-57. In 1955 Edwards stood as the Labour candidate for Merton and Morden. He became the Deputy Editor of the Sunday Express 1957-59, the Managing Editor of the Sunday Express 1959-61 and the Editor of the Daily Express in 1961.

Edwards’s move from working on the left-supporting Tribune to the Express prompted accusations that he was no more than a paid hack without principles. Edwards was sacked from the Express and (mistakenly) believing that his son was worried about him reassured his son by telling him that a ‘mysterious freemasonry’ existed known as the Editors Club and that famille Edwards wouldn’t even lose their yacht because he would soon get another job.

Edwards purchased Christine Keeler’s memoirs for 2k in 1963 – but not material relating to Jeremy some ten years later…

Between 1966-72, Edwards edited the People. By this time he was seriously wealthy and was living in a castle in Oxfordshire.

In the case of the People, Edwards ‘inherited a fiercely campaigning newspaper…[which] largely cleaned up the protection rackets and brothels of Soho’. It is claimed that under Edwards the People ‘continued in much the same spirit, exposing bent detectives on the take from pornographers and ‘vice-kings’.

Edwards was considered a fearless man who had crossed so many nasty characters that he worked behind bullet proof glass after alleged threats to his life.

Although Edwards wouldn’t touch Jeremy Thorpe, in 1980 he had a go at the Royal Family. He discovered that the Royal Train with Charles on board had been shunted into a siding in Wiltshire where it stayed for several hours – whilst a young woman called Diana Spencer boarded it to spend time with Prince Charles… Edwards published the story and later maintained that it cost him a knighthood.

Edwards was Director of Mirror Group Newspapers 1976-88. Maxwell acquired the Mirror Group in July 1984 and under him Edwards became Deputy Chair.

Joe Haines, Harold Wilson’s Press Secretary who maintained that it wasn’t known whether Wilson had blackmailed Thorpe over Norman, also worked for Maxwell. Haines was a Mirror journalist who was initially completely hostile to Maxwell when Maxwell acquired the Mirror Group, but soon came under his influence and ended up writing the authorised biography of Maxwell.

Edwards wasn’t the only person involved with the Sunday Mirror who wielded influence at the time that the documents discovered by the builders were returned to Jeremy. The Chairman of IPC, the company which owned the Mirror at that time, was Sydney Jacobson. He was made a life peer a couple of years or so after Jeremy’s documents were returned to him. In 1974 – when the Mirror supported Labour in the General Election and at about the time that the documents were given to the Sunday Mirror – Jacobson was the Deputy Chair of IPC, working under his friend and colleague Hugh Cudlipp.

Cudlipp was Welsh, from Cardiff and was Chair of Mirror Group Newspapers between 1963-67. Cudlipp was given a peerage in 1974.

Cudlipp was a very big figure and in 2005 dear old Michael Grade – who excels at grovelling to powerful people – stated in a lecture that Cudlipp was ‘one of the giants of British journalism and one of it’s greatest editors’.

After Thorpe resigned following the media reporting the whole dreadful mess including Andrew Newton killing Norman Scott’s dog, then trying to shoot Norman and subsequently being charged with possession of a firearm with intent to danger life, Sir Harold Evans, the Editor of the Sunday Times, showed a considerable degree of sympathy towards Jeremy, met him and subsequently published supportive articles.

Evans edited the Sunday Times between 1967-81. In 1984 he moved to the US. Since 2005 he has contributed to the Guardian and Radio 4 and in 2011 he was appointed Editor at large of Rueters.

Like Edwards, Harold Evans was considered a fearless journalist who was not afraid to expose the truth. He was responsible for the crusading style of investigative journalism for which the Sunday Times was known at one point and it was under his editorship that Marjorie Wallace – see previous blog posts for the dirt on Marjorie and the horrors of psychiatry and child abuse that she kept her mouth firmly shut about – revealed the Thalidomide scandal. It was also Harold Evans who exposed Kim Philby.

In 1981 when Murdoch acquired Times Newspapers Ltd, Evans was appointed as Editor of the Times. He only stayed for one year. Fifty journalists resigned within the first six months of Murdoch’s take-over – some of those journos disliked Evans. In March 1982 a group of journos called upon Evans to resign as a result of the ‘erosion of editorial standards’.

In 1981 Evans married yet another journalist who was constructed as scary and fearless – Tina Brown. I’ve always just considered Tina Brown to be someone who writes vacuous rubbish about Diana and other celebs, but I’ve discovered that when she was younger Brown did write intelligent material and she knew some capable people who also wrote intelligent material critiquing powerful vested interests.

So no-one among this network of journos who would take on anyone and any topic, who rooted out injustice and who struck fear into the heart of everyone ever challenged Jeremy…

‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’ described how two BBC reporters who began researching for a book about the Jeremy and Norman story after everything became public and Jeremy had stood down as leader, were ‘supported’ in this by Sir Charles Curran, the Director-General of the BBC between 1969-77. However the reporters then found that they were issued with new contracts from the BBC that ensured that they would lose control over their own material. They resigned from the BBC as a result.

Charles Curran was someone whom it seems could be pressurised. After complaints from Mary Whitehouse that Dr Who contained far too much sex n violence or something similar, Curran replaced the series producer in 1976. The BBC online site ‘History of the BBC’ aka Pravda, profiles Charles Curran and boasts about his Huge Contribution to the Golden Years of TV. I remember that Golden Age well – utter rubbish, ‘light entertainment’ involving sitcoms dependent upon crude stereotyping. I think that Curran must have been responsible for ‘It Ain’t Half Racist Mum’ actually, but that’s not mentioned on ‘The History of the BBC’, probably because it’s indefensible. What is boasted about however is Curran’s tenure overseeing ‘Parkinson’. So Curran was the person who thought that Parkinson’s crude sexual harassment of the young Helen Mirren was OK – Helen obviously thought that Parkinson was a sad old git but was far too polite to knee him in the groin, although that episode still became infamous.

‘The History of the BBC’ also intriguingly tells us that Curran was ‘somewhat in the shadow of Huw Wheldon’. So Huw Wheldon who – as detailed in the comments after ‘Wheels Within Wheels Or Flies Drawn To The Same Incestuously Corrupt Shithouse?’ – had a hotline to the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales, was obviously Mr Big at the BBC.

Jeremy Thorpe was a member of two London clubs, the Reform Club and the National Liberal Club. Thorpe spent a lot of time in these places and was obviously not unwelcome.

Charles and Camilla are honorary members of the Reform Club and in 2011 guest speakers there included Nick Clegg and Theresa May. Members include: Ruth Lea, Martin Sorrell, Stella Rimmington, Charlie Falconer, Menzies Campbell, former Tory MP Michael Brown, Betty Boothroyd, Roy Hattersley and Michael Howard.

The National Liberal Club’s current President is Alan Beith, a man who was much mentioned in Michael Bloch’s biography of Thorpe. In the 1970s Cyril Smith actually lived at the National Liberal Club. David Belloti, the MP who tried to help Mary Wynch and who within two years of doing so was finished in national politics, was a member of the Club. In 2006, Chris Huhne – the Liberal MP who was later jailed, along with his former wife Vicky Pryce and her mate the barrister Constance Briscoe – launched his leadership campaign from the club, as did Nick Clegg in 2007. The Club played a crucial part in Thorpe’s own election campaign in 1974, by which time the scandal involving him and Norman was common knowledge among the Liberal Party as well as their political opponents, as were the fears that Norman and his friends had for his life.

Presumably Thorpe held a key position in the National Liberal Club, because it was Thorpe who in 1976 handed the Club over to be managed by George Marks, a Canadian ‘businessman’ who was in reality a confidence trickster – he also used the name George de Chabris. Thorpe maintained that he knew nothing about Chabris being dodgy. Chabris and his family lived rent free at the Club, he ran fraudulent businesses from there, he embezzled and fleeced thousands from the Club and flogged the Club’s library to Bristol University at a knock-down price. Chabris was given the boot in 1977 and the Club was rescued by a generous donor.

From a young age Thorpe was good friends with Jeremy Fry, a member of the famous chocolate-making family – it was Fry’s conviction for ‘importuning for immoral purposes’ that prompted an investigation by the police into Thorpe’s suitability for a role at the wedding of Princess Margaret. Fry had been considered for the role of best man but that idea went out of the window after his conviction. Fry’s excesses were well-known but there seems to have been a great deal of hypocrisy over the business of banning him from the Royal Wedding. He was on such good terms with Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones that there were allegations of a menage a trois. Fry continued his friendship with the Royal couple after his own marriage and Princess Margaret and Armstrong-Jones stayed at the Fry’s house near Bath.

In recent years the biological father of Polly Fry, Jeremy’s daughter, has been revealed to be Armstrong-Jones aka Lord Snowdon. Like the Jeremys Fry and Thorpe, it is now admitted that Lord Snowdon put himself about a bit. He was bisexual and fathered Polly shortly before he married Princess Margaret. Marjorie Wallace was one of Snowdon’s mistresses (see post ‘One Dangerous Fucker’). Now that both Princess Margaret and Snowdon are dead, more and more is being revealed about the boozing, the drugs and the shagging and I suspect that there is yet more to come. I cannot help noticing how often people very close to Lord Snowdon have popped up among people who had connections to or concealed the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal/Paedophile Ring and the associated wrongdoing in the mental health services. It took me a while to realise the significance of this because I never thought that Snowdon had much to do with north Wales. In recent years he didn’t. But when he was younger he did. Snowdon was born in Belgravia but the family also had a country house in north Wales. Snowdon’s father was a barrister, his paternal grandfather was a psychiatrist and physician and his paternal grandmother was the daughter of Sir Owen Roberts, the famous Welsh educationalist. Snowdon used to visit north Wales with Princess Margaret and interestingly enough although he died in London, he is buried at Llanfaglan near Caernarfon in the family plot of the ‘celebrities graveyard’.

During my battles with Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends, again and again people sympathetic to – but feaful for – me mentioned ‘very powerful people’ having connections with Dafydd. Other people seemed to be grossly affronted by me having the temerity to ask questions. The dreadful Dr Cathy Wilson at St George’s once yelled intriguingly at me that I needed to understand about ‘important people’. I now know that St George’s knew all about Dafydd et al and were also involved in concealing their wrongdoing. My post ‘I Want Serious Money Now Please’ explained how the Duke of Westminster knew about Sir Peter Morrison abusing under-aged boys. Morrison preyed on boys in care in north Wales. ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz’ detailed the links between the Duke of Westminster and St George’s Hospital.

Snowdon was bisexual, promiscuous, had strong connections to north Wales and indeed Top Doctors and lawyers in north Wales, visited the region and was directly connected to the Royal Family. As the years pass, it becomes increasingly obvious that much about the activities of Princess Margaret and Snowdon were actively concealed. Are you thinking what I’m thinking as Michael Howard used to ask.

As for ‘important people’ – I am not a vacuous social climber and the difference between Cathy Wilson and me is that although I really don’t mind with whom Lord Snowdon and others like him had sex and took drugs if everyone involved was consenting adults, Dafydd et al were facilitating and concealing the abuse of kids in care. Many of whom were found dead, as were other witnesses. As very nearly was Norman Scott. It’s not very nice is it Wilson, even if you do think that the people involved are worth toadying to. Is it really worth colluding with such matters just to get oneself invited to yet another dinner party? Were you perhaps hoping to hit the jackpot and receive an invite to the Athenaeum to join Marjorie, Snowdon and Savile?

Jeremy Fry is also noted for having been James Dyson’s mentor and is credited with being responsible for Dyson starting out on his own.

Even after the rest of the Liberal Party finally decided that Jeremy Thorpe had become far too embarrassing to be seen with in public, Thorpe remained good friends with Clement Freud. Eric Lubbock (Lord Avebury) and David Steel remained supportive of Thorpe long after everyone else had given up on him, although even Steel wanted him to go after Andrew Newton tried to kill Norman.

Clement Freud has in recent years been revealed to have been a sexual predator who raped at least one person and molested many other girls and young women.

Eric Lubbock was the Liberal MP for Orpington between 1962-70. In 1971 he inherited the title of Lord Avebury and remained in the Lords until his death in 2016 – after Blair abolished the right of many hereditary peers to sit in the Lords, the Lib Dems elected Lubbock as being one of the Lords to remain.

Lubbock was Chief Whip for the Liberals between 1963-70.

It was Lubbock who stood bail for Thorpe when he was charged in 1978 with conspiracy to kill and incitement to murder Norman. Norman’s allegation that Andrew Newton had tried to shoot him after shooting Rinka was made in Oct 1975 – Newton was subsequently charged. Lubbock sat on the Royal Commission for Standards of Conduct in Public Life 1974-76. In 1976 Lubbock founded the Parliamentary Human Rights Group, which he chaired for the next 21 years – he then became the Vice-Chair.

Lubbock was a patron of the British Humanist Association, an honorary associate of the National Secular Society, a patron of Prisoners Abroad and a member of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group.

In Sept 2010 Lubbock signed an open letter for the British Humanist Association to the Guardian, opposing the state visit to the UK by Benedict XVI.

Lubbock became a Buddhist in the 1970s and in a June 2012 interview published on the website Liberal Democrat Voice, he states that he is a patron of a Buddhist chaplaincy and is contemplating ordination in a Buddhist monastery.

Whilst he was in the Commons, Lubbock had been the Secretary and Chair of the Parliamentary Group on Civil Liberties, which was serviced by the NCCL – the Secretary of the NCCL at the time was Martin Ennals (he acted as Secretary until 1966).

Ennals features on my post ‘MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course…’. After leaving NCCL he worked for the Commission for Racial Equality and was Secretary of Amnesty International, 1968-80. During Ennals’s time at Amnesty he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize.

Martin Ennals was a founding member of the Anti-Apartheid Movement in 1959. Thorpe was active in that movement.

Martin Ennals’s older brother David was the Secretary of State for Social Security when in 1969 Norman Scott rang Ennals’s Private Secretary and told him about Thorpe’s activities (see post ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’).

David Ennals was heavily involved with MIND for years and his son Paul is the former Chief Exec of the National Children’s Bureau and Chair of a number of a number of Safeguarding Boards, including in Haringey (see post ‘MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course…’ for full details of the Ennals’s clan’s connections to MIND and other organisations).

David Steel was Liberal MP for Ross & Cromarty between 1965-97 and then an MSP between 1999-2003. He was also Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. In 1997 Steel was given a life peerage.

Steel became leader of the Liberal Party in 1976 when Thorpe stepped down and remained leader until 1988 when the Party merged with the SDP. Between 1970-76 he was the Liberals Chief Whip. It was Steel who led the Liberals into the Lib-Lab pact in March 1977. It lasted until 1978 but was widely perceived to have been a very poor deal for the Liberals – in the light of the weakness of the Labour Party at that time, there was a degree of confusion over why Steel couldn’t land a better deal.

Steel was Thorpe’s protégé, became his PPS and was campaign manager when Thorpe ran for the leadership. Like Thorpe, Steel was in the Anti-Apartheid Movement and was it’s President between 1966-70.

When the Liberal activist from Wales who was so concerned at what had happened to Norman Scott at the hands of Jeremy Thorpe contacted Emlyn Hooson and asked for a meeting (see post ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’), it was actually Steel that she met initially, because Hooson (who also worked as a barrister) had been called away to a murder trial. Steel was also shown documentary evidence of Thorpe’s payments to Norman and was given a frank account of what had gone on.

Before Steel was elected he worked for the BBC.

David Steel also knew about Cyril Smith of course…

Jeremy Thorpe was known to have taken a leaf out of the book of his hero David Lloyd George – the father of Gwilym and Megan, two friends of Thorpe – and offered people peerages in return for various favours. Thorpe came up with the goods for Gerran Lloyd, a Liberal Party donor who received a peerage in 1973 and became Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran. After Thorpe was charged with conspiracy to murder and incitement to kill in 1978, Lord Kilgerran set up a Defence Fund to pay Thorpe’s legal costs.

Gerran Lloyd was a barrister who stood for the Liberals on Anglesey in the 1959 General Election. He was President of the Welsh Liberal Party, 1971-74 and President of the British Liberal Party, 1973-74.

Megan Lloyd George was older than Jeremy, but they were very close. As a boy Jeremy used to visit Megan in the Commons for tea and Megan encouraged his political ambitions.

Megan was the first female MP for a Welsh constituency – she was the Liberal MP for Anglesey between 1929-51 and became Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party. In 1955 Megan defected to the Labour Party. In 1957 she was elected as the Labour MP for Carmarthen and held the seat until her death in 1966.

Between 1936-56 Megan was the mistress of the Labour politician Philip Noel-Baker, a campaigner for disarmament who won the Nobel Peace prize in 1959 and who’s wife was a friend of Virginia Woolf.

My post ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’ described how in 1971 a Liberal Party secret inquiry into Thorpe’s conduct invited Norman Scott to speak, but ended with Lord Frank Byers, a member of the inquiry, shouting and hurling insults at Norman. It was Byers’s behaviour that motivated Norman to contact the police yet again about Thorpe and make a 33 page statement.

Byers was the Liberal MP for north Dorset between 1945-50. He was made a life peer in 1964 and became the Liberals Leader in the Lords in 1967.

Byers was a Director of Rio Tinto Zinc, 1962-73.

Although Byers was a Liberal, he knew Harold Wilson from their time at Oxford, when they were both members of the Oxford Liberal Club.

Lord Byers has a famous granddaughter who has followed him into politics – Lisa Nandy, who has been the Labour MP for Wigan since 2010. Lisa’s friends were keen for her to challenge Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour Party leadership. She hasn’t yet done this – although her supporters such as Owen Jones live in hope that the day will come when she does. Lisa herself supported Andy Burnham for the leadership, he who concealed the thousands of deaths at Mid-Staffs for so long.

Lisa worked as a researcher for Centrepoint, the homeless charity between 2003-05. She was a senior policy advisor to the Children’s Society from 2005 and an advisor to the Children’s Commissioner for England.

So Lisa will be one of the many people who will have known about the endemic abuse and trafficking of children in care but who has been strangely silent on this topic. Lisa also found one of those people at a senior level to work for once she entered Parliament – Lisa was PPS to Tessa Jowell.

Is Lisa a bit like her granddad perhaps, knowing about truly appalling matters but keeping them under wraps?

Lisa and her followers like to describe her as being on the ‘soft left’ of the Labour Party. Lisa has been inexplicably vigorously promoted as a wonder and potential leader virtually from the day that she was elected. I cannot help wondering if Lisa’s partner Andy Collis might have had something to do with this – he’s a PR consultant.

In fact Lisa’s supporters were so busy touting her around that some four years ago even I was invited to hear her speak. I was a member of the Compass group at the time and I used to receive notification of various events, but as they were always in London and I was in north Wales I didn’t take much notice. But on one occasion, an e mail virtually begged me to go to an event at a well-known location in London with a radical history, where a certain Lisa Nandy was going to be speaking. The event was promoted as being the one to attend even if you were unable to attend others and I had been bombarded with e mails telling me that Compass were keen to enlist the help and support of folk outside London. So for once I made the effort and went to London for the event. Because of the timing of Lisa’s lecture I was assured that I didn’t need to arrange to stay in London overnight, I could get there in time for the lecture, meet people and then get an evening train back to north Wales. So off I went.

What a surprise I had. Although maybe I shouldn’t have actually been that surprised, what with Lisa being a descendant of Frank, but I didn’t know that then.

Until about three years ago I suffered from very serious migraines – not just bad headaches, these were real bastards, when I got one I couldn’t see properly or balance. They were related to a neck injury that I suffered when I was young and of course because I’d dared complain about the paedophiles’ friends I was effectively refused all treatment for them (I have detailed all this elsewhere on the blog). For years I went without effective medication and the only thing that I could do if I developed a migraine was to lie flat in the dark – to take any physical strain off my neck and to minimise the amount of light that I was exposed to. When this happened I used to explain to people around me what was going on. When I was around sane normal people I was always met with a great deal of understanding – unfortunately however I wasn’t always around sane normal people.

About half an hour after arriving at the venue to hear Lisa speak, I developed a migraine. A real killer. Compass had BEGGED me to go to Lisa’s lecture. Not only did not one person even bother to speak to me – although there were only about ten people at the event and Lisa herself stuck like glue to the three stooges who seemed to be at her side throughout – but when I started to feel very, very bad and tried to tell the people sitting immediately next to me, I was completely blanked. I could feel myself losing my balance so I thought that I’d better get out of the audience quick before I fell on the floor. I was about three rows away from the front. Lisa SAW ME almost keeling over. She SAW ME trying to ask for help. Lisa did not bat an eye-lid. On and on she droned, ploughing through her speech – which even I could hear wasn’t very good and she was having to read it pretty much word for word. In the end I managed to make my way to the back of the hall and escaped through a door, which led to a cloakroom place outside of the entrance to the bogs. I did the only thing that I could and I lay down flat with my eyes shielded. Some 45 mins later a load of people came through on their way to the bogs – Lisa’s lecture had ended and they were having a break before the Q and A session. They walked over me. Every one of those nice middle class London radicals who had come to hear Lisa – some of whom obviously knew her – walked over me. No-one even asked me what I was doing and if I was OK. One woman gave me a frosty look so I explained that I was experiencing a very bad migraine. She then walked out of the door.

I remained on the floor shielded from the light throughout Lisa’s Q and A session. When the event ended everyone buggered off. As did Lisa. They all knew that I was crashed out in the back room with a migraine. I stayed there for the next couple of hours until I was just about able to walk without keeling over. By this time I realised that I’d not be able to catch the train from Euston back to Bangor. Because I was in London rather than on the doorstep of the Top Doctors in north Wales, I decided that I’d try and make my way to a London hospital for help – I ended up at UCL. Christ that was not a good idea, but that is another story. I failed to elicit any help at UCL and was ‘discharged’ ie. chucked out, into the middle of London at 3am. By this time my migraine was gradually beginning to pass. I spent the next few hours dossing outside Euston station waiting for it to open (I didn’t realise that Euston shuts for the small hours). I got the first train back to Bangor – which meant buying another ticket, because the one that I’d purchased was no longer valid.

The whole trip cost me a bloody fortune but it taught me a lot about Lisa Nandy and her supporters.

I continue to receive e mails from Compass asking me for dosh, asking me if I’d like to start up a local Compass group and inviting me to more events in London. I’m never giving them another penny and I’ll never risk my neck at another Lisa Nandy related event in my life.

Lisa is on record as saying that she has received ‘abuse’ from Corbyn’s supporters and that she was ‘genuinely frightened’. So was I Lisa, I was in the middle of London where I knew no-one, in agony, unable to walk or see properly and worried that I was going to start throwing up. But at least you got to read – literally – your speech. What I find even more ‘genuinely frightening’ Lisa is that your grandfather ignored the witness testimony and the pleas for help from someone who had already been by that time the target of a murder plot, according to evidence given at the Old Bailey many years later.

Lisa was selected as a Labour party candidate on an all women shortlist. Her wiki entry boasts that she is the fist female MP for the constituency – as there was an all-women shortlist imposed that is not really much of an achievement – and that she was born into a ‘Bengali family’ no less and that she was ‘one of the first six Asian MPs elected’.

As far as I understand, Lisa’s mother – Frank Byers’s daughter – was not Bengali. It was only Lisa’s father who was Bengali. So in terms of ethnicity, Lisa is as much white (presumably British) as she is Bengali. Is Lisa perhaps being somewhat selective in which boxes she chooses to tick?

The one box that Lisa does tick however is ‘one quarter composed of the genetic material of Lord Frank Byers’.

How about that for your wife’s next election campaign slogan then Andy?

Emlyn Hooson sat on the secret inquiry into Thorpe, alongside Lisa’s granddad and David Steel.

Emlyn Hooson was the Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire, between 1962-79. He was then elevated to the Lords where he sat until his death in 2012. Hooson sat as a Liberal and then as a Liberal Democrat.

Hooson was born in 1925, the son of a Denbighshire hill farmer and attended Denbigh Grammar School – like a few others we know and love. After that, Hooson read law at Aberystwyth University….He served in the Royal Navy – just like Gwynne the lobotomist…

Hooson became a barrister in 1949. He was Chairman of the Flint Quarter Sessions from 1960 and the Merioneth Quarter Sessions from 1962. He was a member of the Bar Council from 1965.

Like so many of the paedophiles’ friends, Hooson played a role in the trial of the Moors Murderers – he was Ian Brady’s QC.

Emlyn was appointed Recorder at Methyr Tydfil and Swansea in 1971 and was Leader of the Chester and Wales Circuit when the corruption on that Circuit was in full swing between 1971-74. He was appointed Recorder of Crown Courts 1972-91. Hooson also became a Deputy High Court judge. He was President of the Cambrian Law Review and an honorary professorial fellow at Aberystwyth University.

Hooson stood as the Liberal candidate for Conwy in the 1950 General Election and again in 1951.

Emlyn Hooson was Chair of the Liberal Party of Wales in 1955 and appointed to the Liberal Party Executive in 1965.

As Chair of the Liberal Party of Wales, he led it’s merger with the North and South Wales Liberal Federation, forming the Welsh Liberal Party.

Hooson introduced the Government of Wales Bill  1967 which eventually led to the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales.

In 1979 Hooson became a life peer. The year that his mates ignored the activities of Dafydd, as he unlawfully had Mary Wynch arrested, imprisoned and relieved of her property.

Emlyn Hooson’s biography tells us that in the Lords he was active in ‘improving the Mental Health Act’. Would he perhaps have made a contribution to the 1983 Act, which was drafted by Robert Bluglass and accompanied by a Code of Practice drafted by William Bingley, whilst both of them covered-up for Dafydd? Not that Emlyn needed to have even bothered – Dafydd just broke the law under the new Act as he had done so under the old one. Emlyn also spoke in the Lords on the necessity for police reform and drugs trafficking. He’ll have known an awful lot about both…

In 1980 Lord Hooson became a member of the ITV advisory council and in 1985 he was appointed a non-executive director of Laura Ashley. He became Chair of Laura Ashley in 1995. So Emlyn could have told everyone why that company went seriously pear-shaped after the death of Laura Ashley and whether the allegations about Bernard Ashley were true…

In 1980 Hooson also Chaired the consortium that bid for the Wales and West TV franchise.

Between 1991-2000 Lord Hooson was Chair of Severn River Crossing PLC.

In 1966 Hooson was President of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. In 1967 he was made an honorary White Bard of the Gorsedd. Between 1987-93 he was President of the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen.

Hooson has two daughters, the Hon Sioned and the Hon Lowri. They both attended the London Welsh School, where Emlyn was Chair of the Governors.

So Hooson had a foot firmly planted in the London Welsh contingent. Hooson died in 2012 which is a great pity, because I would have liked to have asked him why for no good reason some years ago the fraternity of twats in high society in London all wanted to join the London Welsh Society – David Frost was hammering at the door so hard that he nearly broke it down and was most irate when he wasn’t accepted. Lots of fatuous jokes were being made about how being Welsh had suddenly become the height of cool among the London elite. Nonsense -Frost et al had no interest in anything that did not personally advance them, they had no interest in Wales, if they had they’d have gone to live there. Something else was going on. It was nearly as odd as when David Frost died unexpectedly of a heart-attack on a cruise ship when most unusually he wasn’t accompanied by his wife, just as the ship was too far away from the shore to have summoned the help needed. And then Frost’s son was found dead after he’d gone out jogging – from heart problems that were ‘undiagnosed’. I seem to remember all this happened as Operation Pallial got underway. Which was when Dafydd’s partner in crime Tony Francis (Dr X) killed himself – in the light of the documents that I now possess I can understand why Francis might have felt like doing that…

Emlyn’s dad Hugh farmed in the Vale of Clwyd. After Emlyn died, Ieuan Wyn Jones, former leader of Plaid and former Deputy First Minister, commented that he had known Emlyn from Clwyd, where Ieuan Wyn Jones had also lived and that Emlyn ‘was extremely knowledgeable about the politics, history and culture of the Vale’. He certainly was and he knew Dafydd and Gwynne the lobotomist too – and I bet that he knew about the long standing paedophile activity towards the children in care.

Kirsty Williams waxed lyrical about Emlyn when he died, explaining that he was the founding father of the Welsh Liberal Party. Kirsty, I think that your foundations might be a little bit rotten…

In 1970, after the jailing of some Welsh students for invading the High Court in London, Hooson stated that ‘the Welsh were fed up with people who broke the law then whined about the consequences’. Indeed – after Mary Wynch sued Dafydd, everyone was fucking furious to see him given air time on the TV to maintain that ‘I found myself in this bizarre situation when I was only trying to help’. Ten years later when Dafydd was asked to explain why I had complained about him unlawfully arresting and detaining me, he came out with exactly the same phrase.

Emlyn was a close friend of Lord Alex Carlile, who succeeded him as Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire. Carlile had known him previously, he’d met Hooson when Carlile was training to be a barrister.

Even Emlyn Hooson’s most loyal fans agree that the path in life of this son of a Denbighshire hill farmer had been helped by his marriage to the daughter of Sir George Hamer, the Lord Lieutenant of Montgomeryshire.

Emlyn Hooson was not called as a witness at Thorpe’s Old Bailey trial. Peter Bessell, Thorpe’s friend and Liberal Party colleague, did give evidence and testified that Hooson knew of Thorpe’s payments to Norman Scott. The Court heard a recording of David Holmes, Thorpe’s friend and co-defendant, telling Bessell that Hooson had been ‘firmly sat on’ for trying to force Thorpe out. Someone somewhere will know who sat on Hooson, but they weren’t called to give evidence either.

David Freeman, Harold Wilson’s Press Solicitor, was someone who offered a helping hand to Thorpe’s friend and co-defendant, David Holmes.  When The Mirror revealed that it was Holmes who had purchased incriminating material about Jeremy which according to Norman Scott had been sold without his authorisation by Scott’s GP Roger Gleadle, Holmes met with the DPP and David Freeman subsequently prepared a statement on Holmes’s behalf. The statement was allegedly personally vetted by Harold Wilson.

Freeman was born in Cardiff and was involved in the Robert Maxwell DTI inquiry in 1970.

In 1974 Freeman advised Wilson on libel.

Freeman was a Trustee of Ravenswood (now Norwood) Children’s Home. In 2007 he built a children’s centre, The Freeman Family Centre, for Barnardos in Brent.

Freeman’s wife was an educational psychologist who then became a partner in his law firm in 1967 after she qualified as a solicitor. She wrote the authorised biography of Lord Denning.

Another character whose name appeared repeatedly in Michael Bloch’s book about Thorpe who seemed to be highly influential in the Liberal Party during the Jeremy Years was Trevor Jones – who in 1981 became Sir Trevor Jones.

Trevor Jones was for many years the Lib Dem leader of Liverpool City Council. Although he was constructed very much as Welsh and was nicknamed ‘Jones the Vote’, he grew up in Bootle. However his parents were Welsh – they were from Dyserth in Denbighshire and Jones was born in north Wales.

Trevor Jones was elected to Liverpool City Council in 1968 and to Liverpool Metropolitan District Council in 1973. He led his party to control Liverpool in 1973, was Council leader again between 1981-83 and then again in 1987. He remained a member of the Council until 1991. In 2003 he returned to the council when he was re-elected to Liverpool City Council and remained there until 2010. Jones also stood as the Liberal candidate for Liverpool Toxteth in the Feb 1974 General Election. In the General Election in the October of 1974, Jones was Liberal Candidate for Gillingham. Jones was President of the Liberal Party in 1972 for one year and in the early 70s campaigned for the Liberal Party in the south east of England.

Trevor Jones was heavily involved with David Alton’s election victory in 1979. Alton’s result was breath-taking, there was an enormous swing in his favour – which was a bit strange, because David Alton is really only a one-track pony. He is anti-abortion and that’s about it. Whilst there are many people who are quite genuine in their opposition to abortion – it’s rather ironic that in the past couple of weeks there have been howls of outrage about Jacob Rees-Mogg declaring himself to be anti-abortion because there are many more offensive indefensible things about Rees-Mogg than that – the tactics used by some MPs and their associates who have stood on an anti-abortion platform have been very unpleasant. One wonders what Trevor Jones and co did to achieve that impressive result.

Trevor Jones’s wife Doreen was a Liverpool City Councillor for 30 years and was Lord Mayor of Liverpool twice – Jones himself was also Lord Mayor of Liverpool.

Although flattering profiles of Trevor Jones stress his ‘public service’ and ‘success’, Liverpool local politics during his years were very fraught indeed. Derek Hatton was causing havoc – I was told in the 80s by someone who’s family were involved in local politics in Liverpool that Hatton was actually far worse than was ever publicly admitted and was no more than a thug – and Trevor Jones was one of those who opposed Militant. It was as a result of the expulsion of 47 Militant Councillors in March 1987 that Jones became Council leader. However I imagine that Jones has numerous skeletons in his own cupboard – he was leader of the Council at the time of the Toxteth riots and ‘worked in partnership with Heseltine’. Many interesting things were going on in Liverpool – this blog has already detailed some of the corruption in the NHS and medical school in Liverpool, but a number of people have told me that ‘community politics’ were absolutely poisonous and that some genuine people were very badly damaged and withdrew from such activities.

Trevor Jones’s style and contribution to politics can perhaps be assessed by the nature of his protégé – in Nov 2008, the Liverpool Echo mentioned a Chris Rennard, described as Jones’s ‘younger Lieutenant’.

Readers may recognise the name – Rennard, now Lord Rennard, became infamous a few years ago after numerous allegations surfaced that Rennard was attempting to extract sexual favours from women in return for their progress in the Party.

Chris Rennard was a Liberal Party activist in Liverpool in the late 70s – whilst at university he had Chaired the Liverpool University Liberals. Rennard is described as one of the ‘early pioneers of community politics in Liverpool’…. Rennard himself maintains that Trevor Jones was a ‘major influence’ on him.

Whilst Deputy Chair of Liverpool Labour Party, Rennard organised many campaigns in the 80s when the Liberals controlled the City Council. Rennard was David Alton’s agent in 1983 when Alton stood for the newly created seat of Liverpool Mossley Hill. In 1984 Rennard was one of the Party’s national Area Agents in Leicester. He’ll have heard about a Lord Greville Janner of the Labour Party then. Chris Rennard also assisted in the Eastbourne campaign in 1990 – so he’ll have known David Bellotti, the Liberal MP who tried to help Mary Wynch and disappeared from national politics afterwards never to resurface.

In 2011 ‘Total Politics’ described Rennard as ‘the most formidable and feared political campaigner of the last twenty years.

Rennard stood down as Chief Exec of the Lib Dems in 2009, after a number of truly hair-raising accounts from female Lib Dems regarding their experiences with him. There were allegations of serious sexual harassment and people were alleging that sexual favours were expected in return for advancement in the Lib Dems. There was an enormous hoo ha, with some Lib Dems maintaining that Rennard was the loveliest man that they had ever met (which was what the corrupt occupational health physician at St George’s, Nicky Mitchell-Heggs, said about Professor Tom Burns), whilst others claimed that he was a ruthless sexual predator who ruled by fear. Cleggy and the usual suspects all maintained that bullying wasn’t tolerated in the Lib Dems, neither sexual harassment etc etc. But then Cleggy dispensed kind words at Cyril Smith’s funeral. And probably at Jeremy Thorpe’s as well.

The aggro concerning Chris Rennard did not go away – the allegations of sexual harassment returned with a vengeance in 2013 after a number of women complainants were furious that so little action had been taken against him, although at one point there was a Metropolitan Police investigation as well as a Lib Dem investigation.

In 2014 after Rennard was suspended from the party, the Times reported that ‘friends’ of Rennards claimed that he would reveal two decades of sex scandal in the Party if he were to be expelled – it was overtly stated that ‘he knows where the bodies are buried’. I suspect that Rennard also knows about two decades of sex scandal in the Tory Party, in the Labour Party and in Plaid Cymru. Because I do as well.

I too suspect that I know where at least some bodies are buried. I think that some bodies are buried within the grounds of the now derelict North Wales Hospital Denbigh. Anyone want to start the excavations a la the Catholic institutions for the unfortunate?

Chris Rennard is a friend and legal advisor of Alex Carlile.

My How Things Haven’t Changed

I have just read the biography of Jeremy Thorpe by Michael Bloch. Many aspects of the story told – and the sleight that Bloch puts on it – felt very familiar.

Thorpe was the leader of the Liberal Party who ended up standing trial at the Old Bailey in 1979 for conspiring to kill Norman Scott, a man younger than him with whom he’d had a sexual relationship many years previously. The trial became notorious – the presiding judge was Justice Cantley and Jeremy was represented by George Carman QC. The trial made Carman’s reputation – and that of David Napley, Jeremy’s solicitor. Jeremy and his co-defendants were acquitted and the trial was widely seen as complete establishment stitch-up. Scott was a prosecution witness but was insulted and abused by Cantley, who also commented that he didn’t like the idea of sending a distinguished Privy Councillor like Jeremy to prison and made jokes about the incompetence of Andrew Newton, the prosecution witness who admitted that he’d been paid to kill Norman. The trial led to a spate of books and Peter Cook’s ‘biased judge’ parody. I knew much about all this, but I discovered a lot more from Bloch’s book.

Jeremy was born into an incredibly well-connected political family. His grandfather and father were politicians and Jeremy socialised with politicians, public figures and their families from his earliest days. He was personally acquainted with many historical figures – his family were close friends with Lloyd George’s family, they made visits to north Wales to Lloyd George’s family home. Jeremy was particularly fond of and close to Megan, Lloyd George’s daughter, a Liberal MP herself. Jeremy saw Lloyd George as a role model and was saying whilst he was still a teenager he would be a Liberal PM like Lloyd George. He was encouraged in this ambition by his family and by Megan – he made regular visits to Parliament to take tea with people like Megan and years later when he was elected as an MP it was remarked upon that unlike most new MPs, Jeremy wasn’t in the least bit over-awed by Parliament, he was completely familiar with it. As a child he was friends with the Carey Evans branch of Lloyd George’s extended family – members of the shithouse – and as he matured he made more and more friendships with leading members of the shithouse. Thorpe lived his entire life in the shithouse and was the ultimate example of one of it’s members.

He followed the standard privileged path – Eton, then Oxford to read law. Thorpe was a member of both the Oxford Union and the Oxford University Law Society – he rubbed noses and became friends with numerous powerful people in law, media and politics along the way, whom later proved to be of great use to Jeremy.

Whilst he was involved with the Oxford University Law Society, Thorpe invited guests such as Lord Denning and Lord John Morris of Borth-y-Gest. Morris was a paid up member of the Welsh branch of the shithouse. He was a friend of the Lloyd George’s, a barrister on the Northern Circuit and stood as a Liberal candidate on two occasions. Morris was chairman of the Quarter Sessions in Cheshire for 25 years, was a High Court judge, a Lord Justice of Appeal and a Law Lord. He was Pro-Chancellor of the University of Wales 1956-74, a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards and the Vice-President of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. I suspect that he knew Dafydd and Gwynne.

So Jeremy had some strong Welsh connections – later in life he became friendly with Liberal Party donor Gerran Lloyd and awarded him a peerage, thus turning him into Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran.

At Oxford, people maintained that Jeremy was not known for having sexual relationships, gay or straight. People claimed that he was solely interested in building his career.

As a young man Jeremy certainly had a following. He was often described as popular, witty and entertaining – but even his fans admitted that he was extraordinarily grandiose, constantly pontificating on his future as PM. His detractors however maintained that Jeremy was a very nasty piece of work – dodgy, ruthless, dishonest and downright dangerous in terms of what he was prepared to do to advance himself.

In the years after Oxford, there was evidence that Jeremy was not only gay but was having many casual liaisons. He was a member of the National Liberal Club and the Reform Club, which both offered opportunities for gay encounters and contained many gay men in influential positions.

Jeremy harboured an ambition to marry Princess Margaret – he spoke about this quite frankly and was seriously miffed when she announced her engagement to Armstrong-Jones. In an ideal world Jeremy would have had sex with both of them – upon the announcement of their engagement in 1960 he sent a notorious House of Commons postcard to a friend upon which he’d written ‘What a pity about HRH. I rather hoped to marry one and seduce the other’.

As Jeremy progressed through his political career more and more anecdotes circulated about his risky behaviour – cruising, frequenting gay bars, casual encounters, ‘rough sex’ and his boasting about seducing young men, including cameramen who were filming interviews with him, policemen on duty in Parliament and footmen when he was invited to receptions at Buck House.

Jeremy was elected as the Liberal MP for North Devon. It was well-known among his constituents that he was gay – he had relationships with a number of men from north Devon and took London boyfriends down to the constituency.

Jeremy was friendly with a number of people who were considered beyond the pale, including the gay Labour MP Tom Driberg who generally shocked everyone for numerous reasons. Driberg commented that he had heard about Jeremy from various rent boys – Jeremy and Driberg were using the same ones. Lord Boothby was a family friend of the Thorpes – Boothby was bisexual, he was friends with the Krays and had a long-running affair with Harold MacMillan’s wife, as well as gay sexual encounters with figures from the criminal underworld.

MI5 and the police knew all about Jeremy’s sexual activities – they also ended up getting their hands on the Princess Margaret postcard. When Jeremy’s close friend Jeremy Fry was prosecuted for gross indecency Thorpe’s activities once more came to the attention of the authorities.

At the same time as leading a stereotypical example of a double life, Thorpe continued to make gobsmacking efforts to increase his network of powerful friends, including on an international basis – he became personal friends with many heads of state and hobnobbed with the Royal Family. Thorpe had already built up a successful media career as a radio and TV personality by the time that he entered Parliament.

Jeremy was active in the Homosexual Law Reform Society, ostensibly from a liberal standpoint. Between 1963-66 most of the meetings of the Society took place in Thorpe’s Parliamentary office.

Norman Scott – then known as Norman Josiffe – was working as a stable boy for one of Thorpe’s friends when they met. They had a relationship in early 60s which Norman perceived as very abusive. Norman was a lot younger than Jeremy and was in law still a minor when their relationship began. Norman didn’t have a very solid home background – ironically Norman’s mother spent a lot of her time at Bexley Heath Conservative Club, where Ted Heath was the local MP. Ted Heath would later offer Thorpe a position in his Gov’t, at a time when Thorpe claimed that he was being ‘persecuted’ by Norman. Norman claimed that Jeremy ruthlessly sexually used him and described Thorpe as becoming increasingly callous. Following an initially warm relationship during which Thorpe kept him, bought him presents etc Thorpe ended up basically shagging Norman and then ordering him to spend nights on a camp bed, throwing him out when he felt like it. Rather than Norman persecuting Thorpe, the available evidence suggests that a predatory mature man with powerful friends used a rather confused young man sexually – whilst Thorpe also conducted casual liaisons with others – and then dumped him, subsequently maintaining that they barely knew each other.

Norman Scott had a very bad press and not just at the hands of the biased judge. What is clear is that Norman was for some reason very fragile – but nobody seems to have asked why. He seems to have become increasingly distressed after his encounters with Jeremy, was in poor mental health and made a number of suicide attempts. Norman himself consistently told people that Jeremy had ruined his life and interestingly enough a number of people who knew Norman took the same view and even made representation to third parties about this. As more and more of Jeremy’s friends hurled abuse at Norman – as did Jeremy himself – shrieking that he was ‘neurotic’ and ‘a nutter’, they didn’t seem able to explain a few obvious things. Such as the letter dated 1961 that Jeremy wrote to Norman on House of Commons notepaper – which years later became notorious when the press finally got hold of it – a letter which certainly reads as though it’s from a gay man to his lover, making a reference to ‘bunnies’ going to France (Thorpe admitted that ‘bunnies’ was his pet name for Norman). The letter also makes reference to some photos which Jeremy asks to be returned – yet no-one commented on this. Norman consistently maintained that Thorpe had stolen his National Insurance card after Thorpe failed to pay contributions when Norman worked for him and thus Norman couldn’t seek work. No-one seems to have investigated Norman’s claims regarding this – although it would have been easy to confirm if this was the case or not. Yet after quite a fuss and a very long time, it transpired that one of Jeremy’s political friends used his influence with the DHSS to sort this out behind the scenes – that’s not really a reaction to someone who’s completely mad and is saying things of no substance.

Norman also claimed that Thorpe paid him hush money and tried to conceal their relationship. Among the hysterical claims that Norman was making it all up, Norman then produced letters and documents demonstrating that Thorpe had made payments to him, regularly, over a long period of time, whilst claiming to some people that he’d never known Norman. Yet Thorpe had told other people that he was Norman’s guardian. Every time Norman became distressed and then demonstrated that he had lived with Jeremy, had been given money etc but was now claiming to be destitute because of Jeremy, Jeremy’s explanation to people who asked what the hell was going on was always the same – that Norman was mad, Jeremy had tried so hard to help him, he had been so patient but there was just no dealing with Norman and now he realised that Norman was a wicked manipulative man who had fooled a lot of people and was hounding him. Which was exactly what Dafydd Alun Jones said about Mary Wynch and me when we told people that Dafydd had illegally imprisoned us and that we had evidence of Dafydd’s criminal activities.

Again and again events occur which suggest that Norman was no fantasist. Another man at one point comes forward with sexual allegations about Thorpe – his account of Thorpe’s conduct is strikingly similar to Norman’s, although at that time Norman’s allegations had not found their way into the public domain. Norman maintained that Thorpe had promised to secure him a job – Thorpe made such offers to other people as well. Thorpe actually arranged for Norman to begin a new life in Switzerland – except that Norman didn’t want this and returned to the UK. This was seen as further evidence of Norman’s insanity and lack of gratitude – no-one asks why he was sent abroad by Jeremy and his mates for no good reason when he clearly had no desire to go. But then Thorpe and co were quite enthusiastic about sending people abroad – years later they arranged for Andrew Newton, the man who maintained that he had been hired to kill Norman, to begin a new life in Southern Africa after he had killed Norman’s dog but failed to kill Norman because his ancient gun jammed.

Bloch’s account of Thorpe packing Norman off to Switzerland and then getting very angry and pathologising Norman when he came back reminded me of something that I witnessed at Bangor University Student Health Centre years ago, as I did battle with the corrupt Dr DGE Wood and Gwynne the lobotomist. There was a young woman on my course whom I knew, but not very well. By the time that we were in the third year of our degrees, this young woman seemed to be very obviously falling apart. There were rumours that she had a serious drug problem – which was unusual for a student in those days – she lost a terrific amount of weight, was often seen walking around Bangor in her nightclothes and her hair started dropping out. I had no idea that she was having anything to do with the Student Health Centre until after my finals I was talking to the nurse up there when she asked me how this young woman had got on and it transpired that she had sat her exams in the medical room on the grounds that she had been having serious health problems. A couple of weeks later I was in the Student Health Centre when the same nurse started fuming about this young woman, stating that she ‘didn’t want to be helped’ and that there was ‘nothing that anyone could do for her’. It transpired that DGE Wood had been pressurising this young woman to go to Australia no less – he’d even arranged a job out there for her. Except that she was horrified at these arrangements and had ‘broken down’ at the very thought of being packed off to Australia and had refused to go. I have mentioned on this blog how Wood ended up having screaming rows with me and told me to leave Wales and forget about everything that had happened there. I’ve been wondering whether, like me, this young woman who was being pressurised to go to Australia had discovered a few things about Wood and Gwynne Williams. She was very obviously not coping with life very well and had sat her finals under special conditions. Who on earth would try and force her into leaving for Australia under such circumstances? Perhaps someone who was very worried about her continued presence in north Wales…

Not only were there huge questions about Thorpe’s conduct in relation to Norman that went unasked, but far from Norman ‘having no evidence’ for his story, evidence seems to periodically pop up but a lot of people work very hard to ensure that it doesn’t get to see the light of day. One of Thorpe’s closest friends, a fellow Liberal MP Peter Bessell, played a key role in ‘managing’ the problem that was Norman. Bessell meets him constantly, tells him that Jeremy will do this, that and the other to help him – although Jeremy never does – and Bessell makes payments to Norman whilst telling him not to mention Jeremy’s name to anyone (not that Norman was ever given hush money of course). On one of Norman’s enforced trips abroad, his luggage is lost. Thorpe goes to very great lengths to retrieve this luggage, using his Gov’t contacts. It transpires that there are letters that Jeremy has written to Norman in that luggage and Jeremy wants those letters back. After many years, Bessell and Thorpe fell out and Bessell emigrated to America. In November 1974, builders carrying out work on Bessell’s former office in London discovered a briefcase full of ‘compromising material’ relating to Jeremy Thorpe including documents concerning Norman, hidden in a false ceiling. The builders realised that they’d hit gold and took the documents to the Sunday Mirror. The Sunday Mirror editor Bob Edwards and the Chairman of the company that owned the paper, Lord Jacobson, knew Jeremy and knew about Norman. Surprise surprise, not a word was published – the documents were personally returned by Edwards to Thorpe at a meeting in his Westminster office, after copies had been made for the legal manager’s safe.

A Dr Roger Gleadle also ends up in possession of incriminating documents relating to Thorpe’s relationship with Norman and sells them. Gleadle was Norman’s GP and he also maintains that Norman is mad – Gleadle keeps him under ‘heavy sedation’ but that doesn’t stop Norman trying to kill himself whilst he is in Gleadle’s ‘care’. Interestingly enough Norman maintains that Gleadle has sold documents of his without his permission and is trying to poison him. Gleadle’s conduct becomes known when it is revealed that the person who purchased the documents was a friend of Jeremy’s. There are other Top Doctors who were well-aware of what was going on – including a number of psychiatrists who ended up treating Norman as he had breakdowns and made suicide attempts. At one point he was sectioned. One of the hospitals that treated Norman – in 1963/64 and again in 1967 – was St George’s.

Like Jeremy, the Top Doctors stressed how they tried to ‘help’ this madman who is inexplicably in constant fear and distress and makes crazy allegations about that nice Mr Thorpe which of course none of them believe – although the whole bloody lot of them are keen to get their paws on any documentation that Norman might have relating to Jeremy. Jeremy stressed to people that Norman is someone who had been in a ‘mental home’. I have a document in my possession written by Andrew Park, a corrupt lawyer at the Welsh Office, stating that I have been in a ‘mental institution’. Of course I have – Dafydd illegally detained me in one after I complained about him and his colleagues. The reason why Andrew Park found out about it was that after I complained about being unlawfully arrested and held in a mental institution, Andrew Park advised Dafydd et al on how to ensure that my complaints were never investigated.

Norman spends a lot of time telling people that Jeremy has ruined his life – Norman’s mates agree with this perception but everyone else maintains that Norman has an irrational obsession with poor Mr Thorpe and is ‘persecuting him’. What Norman is actually doing is making statements to the police and other people alleging very serious offences on the part of Thorpe et al. Norman consistently said the same thing – that Thorpe befriended him but ended up repeatedly sexually assaulting him in a manner that Norman did not want and since then had done a number of things to try and keep him quiet. No-one bothered to report how Norman thinks Jeremy has ruined his life – it might have been worth asking him because a lot of very unfortunate things happened to Norman. He landed jobs but then lost them, he became homeless and destitute, got back on his feet again, but hey presto suddenly he’d been sacked and he’s homeless once more. In the mid 70s, Norman was robbed, beaten up and an attempt was made to murder him – the people involved all maintained that they were put up to it by Jeremy or his friends.

Despite the constant claims of what a dreadful man he is, no-one ever produces evidence of anything very serious that Norman has actually done wrong. Whereas evidence constantly crops up suggesting that Jeremy was a lying bastard who was having numerous sexual encounters with much younger men, that his friends were constantly hassling Norman and that those claiming to ‘help’ Norman seemed to be benefiting from his distress and were often in close contact with Jeremy and his circle.

Norman does have a habit of producing very damning evidence against Thorpe – including evidence that Thorpe wrote him a letter in 1961 which suggests that they were having a sexual relationship whilst Norman was a minor. The explanation? That Mr Thorpe ‘made a mistake’ when he dated the letter to Norman – he obviously wrote the highly incriminating letter to Norman a few years later, whilst Norman was older. Not that the letter proved ANYTHING anyway of course.

Jeremy and co constantly maintain that Norman is a ‘nut’ whom absolutely nobody believes. For a nutter who can’t be believed they are certainly very bothered by him. So bothered that in June 1971 the Liberal Party launch an inquiry into Norman’s allegations – it is of course a secret inquiry, conducted by a small number of Jeremy’s close associates, namely Emlyn Hooson (a lawyer who was by that time leader of the Chester and Wales Circuit), David Steel and Frank Byers (the Liberal leader in the Lords). Norman told his story in person at the inquiry only to be shouted down and insulted by Byers. Hooson had been in touch with Scotland Yard about a police statement that Norman had made about Jeremy in 1962. When Thorpe found out about this he got in touch with Reginald Maudling the Home Secretary – Thorpe and Maudling were friends – and asked him to instruct the police to only give out a minimum of information. Maudling seems to have done as requested – a Detective Inspector Edward Smith attended the inquiry but would only provide brief factual answers to questions. Maudling told Jeremy by letter that he had discussed the matter with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

Hooson stated himself to be ‘appalled’ at the ‘Mafia-like atmosphere…of lies and intrigue’ that had been created. Jeremy subsequently recommended Byers for the Privy Council.

For a secret inquiry – that of course exonerated Jeremy – which was precipitated by allegations from a lunatic whom no-one believed it caused quite a stir.

Norman was so pissed off at his treatment by Byers that he returned to the police, made a 33 page statement and contacted a journalist who passed the story to MI5, MI6, the People newspaper and the Sunday Mirror. Yet no-one responded.

Jeremy and co maintained the line that everyone thought that Norman was a nutter who couldn’t be believed for many years, even throughout the eventual Old Bailey trial in 1979. I’ve got news for Jeremy and Michael Bloch, who believes that the folk of north Devon loathed Norman and considered him an insane nuisance – I grew up in west Somerset not a million miles away from north Devon and Exmoor, where much of the action took place. Norman had been living on Exmoor for years and an awful lot of people knew about him and Jeremy. I was a teenager when Norman’s dog was shot and Norman turned up as a crying wreck alleging that the gunman had tried to kill him as well and I remember the subsequent trials – NO-ONE locally thought that Norman was a nut. They believed him and were appalled at Thorpe and his mates. Thorpe had always been a flash git, he was perceived to be a London man with upmarket and powerful friends – the bumpkins were definitely overawed, but they believed Norman. There were a lot of very crude bawdy jokes in circulation, but those jokes did not involve Norman being a nutter – they were jokes about Jeremy sexually assaulting teenaged boys. Now where did those jokes come from I wonder? I knew Liberals – my own family were all Tories, but the west country was a Liberal stronghold, there were a lot of them about – who were seething at Thorpe’s conduct.

Furthermore, some people were very worried for Norman’s safety, particularly after Thorpe et al were acquitted. I remember our baker – who had contacts in north Devon – telling us that everyone feared that Jeremy’s lot were going to go after Norman again and this time succeed in killing him. Another person who delivered to our village claimed that he knew a friend of Norman’s and that after the trial Norman had plastered his house in photos of him and Jeremy, as a gesture in the wake of being branded a liar by the judge. Take it from me Bloch, a lot of people knew about Jeremy and Norman and the general opinion was that Jeremy was a lying potentially murdering bastard but bumpkins like us didn’t stand a chance against his mates. Furthermore, although Thorpe and the crooked judge et al kept stressing that Norman was a blackmailing sponger who lived off the great and the good, the evidence doesn’t suggest that. Norman likes horses and he worked with horses – that usually involves hard work and not much money. Press reports about Norman always referred to his job as a ‘male model’ – he did do some modelling for a bit, but most of the time he worked as a horseman. But if one is trying to discredit Norman, ‘effete male model’ is more effective than ‘well regarded skilled horseman’. After the Old Bailey trial, if Norman had wanted he could have been a millionaire – the media were finally reporting the story and Norman had evidence that was never presented in Court. Norman could have sold his story across the world – he didn’t. He went back to Exmoor and the horses and he still lives down there. Ironically, Norman has outlasted all the others – nearly everyone who wanted him dead are now dead themselves, but Norman is still alive.

As I read Bloch’s book I recognised many of the names of Thorpe’s friends and people who helped him. Some have already been named on this blog. Others were the mentors and patrons of the people named on this blog. As well as members of the shithouse in north Wales, there was a south Wales connection as well – two of the people who stood trial with Jeremy for conspiracy to murder were a pair of crooks from south Wales, it was they who found the hit man. I get the distinct impression that those who protected Thorpe and threw mud at Norman were pretty much the same people who protected Dafydd and Gwynne in their younger years. The context is identical – public figures sexually exploiting vulnerable people and then destroying them, whilst everybody ignored mountains of evidence that this was going on. The techniques used to discredit Norman are tried and tested – Top Doctors are utilised to detain him in a psychiatric facility, suggest that his extreme terror and distress are unfathomable and then discredit any witnesses or sympathisers of Norman by darkly muttering about Norman’s ‘charm’ and ‘manipulation’. Only they know Norman’s black heart. Interestingly enough, one of Norman’s staunchest defenders – a widow from north Wales with whom Norman lived with in 1971 – was found dead in 1972. Norman produces a good explanation as to why the official reason for her death is not credible, but of course Norman is mad. This lady had been an active Liberal and her father had known Emlyn Hooson. She had been so worried about what was happening to Norman that she wrote to Hooson and subsequently met up with the Liberal Chief Whip David Steel. She produced evidence of payments that Thorpe was making to Norman via Bessell and also a letter from one of her neighbours who also knew about Jeremy and Norman and who had written to Jeremy himself. It was her representation that had sparked off the ‘inquiry’ by Byers et al. Hooson was very worried indeed after this lady made representation – he wanted Thorpe to resign from the leadership and give up his seat. Jeremy maintained that Norman was trying to blackmail Bessell. After this lady’s death – allegedly from alcohol poisoning – Norman gave evidence at the inquest. He claimed that she had actually killed herself in despair at discovering what had been happening in the highest echelons of the Liberal Party and at her inability to help him. Local journos passed the story on to the London newspapers. Nothing happened. Scott’s story was dismissed as ‘cold and stale’.

Witnesses stated that Jeremy had become particularly vexed about Norman in the late 1960s – when for much of the time Norman wasn’t having much to do with him. Jeremy’s close friends Peter Bessell and David Holmes admitted that Jeremy spoke at length to them about having Norman killed. He discussed possible ways – shooting, strangling or poisoning. He suggested that Norman’s body could be disposed of down a tin mine (Peter Bessell was the Liberal MP for Bodmin). Jeremy held further discussions about murdering Norman in 1974. When Jeremy was reminded of these conversations after the killing of Norman’s dog, Jeremy brushed them off as humour or metaphors. Yet one man stated that he was paid to kill Norman, another man admits that funds were liberated from Liberal Party coffers to pay the hit man and other people detail their efforts to find a suitable hit man.

Readers will remember that in the 70s, British politics was in freefall; Heath’s Gov’t was weak, Wilson’s subsequent Gov’t was weak and the Liberals were really enjoying their position as being able to exert political muscle – people had to do deals with them to survive. There was the infamous Lib Lab pact. I can remember the excitement of West Country Liberals as they really believed that a Liberal PM was a possibility. I used to work for a neighbouring farmer whose brother was John Pardoe, one of Jeremy’s leadership rivals, and there was much talk of the possibility of Mr Pardoe ending up as PM. Jeremy was acutely aware of the hope that a Liberal could become PM and very obviously had nightmarish visions of Norman’s story becoming public and scuppering his chances.

Although nearly all the politicians involved were greedy duplicitous backstabbers, as with Top Doctors they stuck together like glue rather than dare rat on each other. The modus operandi of everyone seems to be one of covert or overt blackmail and the formation of complex alliances and this results in rivals propping each other up or covering each others arses. Cyril Smith, that well-known child molester, was a staunch supporter of Jeremy’s because Jeremy had helped him get elected – for his part, Jeremy had hoped that Smith’s success in Rochdale was the start of a Liberal revival. In 1974 Jeremy’s Conservative opponent in North Devon, Tim Keigwin, knew that Norman feared for his life and took receipt of a statement about Jeremy from him – a local solicitor delivered the statement to Conservative Central Office and it was read by Lord Carrington, the Party Chairman. Keigwin also spoke to the Attorney General, Sir Peter Rawlinson. Rawlinson and Carrington decided that no use should be made of Norman’s story – Ted Heath agreed. During the General Election campaign of early 1974, Keigwin was told by both his Tory colleagues and by Jeremy’s Devon solicitor not to mention the Jeremy-Norman story. Newspapers were also offered the story about Roger Gleadle selling letters that could embarrass the Liberals throughout the campaign – it was referred to in Private Eye but no-one else touched it. Thorpe was invited for political negotiations by Heath and Wilson after the election. Heath offered Thorpe a post in Gov’t but not a coalition – Thorpe rejected the offer. Wilson’s Press Secretary Joe Haines maintained that if Thorpe joined the Cabinet and kept the Tories in office, then Labour would tell the Norman Scott story. It is not known if Wilson blackmailed Thorpe.

Bloch’s book is frank that many senior politicians were told of Norman’s allegations and knew that Jeremy was a promiscuous gay man. Parliamentary gossip being what it is, I suspect that by the time that Thorpe stood trial just about everyone in politics would have heard something about Jeremy and Norman.

So let’s look at who definitely knew about Norman’s allegations.

In Dec 1962 Norman gave a formal police statement at Chelsea Police Station about Jeremy sexually assaulting him when he was a minor. He produced letters from Jeremy and the postcard that Jeremy had sent his friend upon the engagement of Princess Margaret.

Peter Bessell informed George Thomas who was then a junior Minister at the Home Office about Jeremy’s ‘problem’ with Norman -Bessell knew Thomas personally. Thomas has of course in recent years been named as a paedophile himself and was investigated by the South Wales Police. Thomas was sympathetic to Jeremy and arranged a meeting between Bessell and Sir Frank Soskice in May 1965. Soskice too was most understanding – he commented that Norman ‘couldn’t prove anything’ but ‘it’s a pity about those letters’. (The letters that proved something.) Soskice remarked that he was ‘very fond’ of Thorpe and that he was ‘an asset to the House’. During the meeting, Soskice had a file in front of him – which Bessell presumed contained Norman’s police statement and the letters. Bessell mentioned that Thorpe was anxious that the documents should not remain on record.

Bessell later bumped into George Thomas. Thomas told him that he’d spoken to Soskice who told him that Jeremy had nothing more to worry about. Bessell took this to mean that the file had been destroyed, but it seems that Soskice meant that no further action would be taken.

Bessell stated that he ‘intimidated’ Norman into ceasing his ‘harassment’ of Jeremy. Norman’s ‘harassment’ seems to have constituted a police statement, desperate requests to Bessell and to Jeremy for help with the stolen NI card and then a letter to Jeremy’s mother pleading for help, telling her that he was virtually destitute and asking her if she could influence Jeremy to behave rather more acceptably. Jeremy’s mother was unmoved by Norman’s pleas, but it is on record that she didn’t disbelieve his allegations.

In August 1965 Bessell told George Mackie, the Chair of the Scottish Liberals about Jeremy and Norman. When Mackie lost his seat in 1966, he told the story to the new Liberal MP Richard Wainwright. Alisdair MacKenzie, the Liberal MP for Ross & Cromarty, heard of Norman’s allegations from a constituent who had visited Ireland, where Norman had then been living.

Alice Bacon, a Home Office Minister, also knew about Jeremy and Norman – she was one person who was horrified.

By the time of the 1966 General Election, the matter was known about by the new Home Secretary Roy Jenkins, also his junior Minister Dick Taverne (who knew Jeremy from Oxford) and by Harold Wilson. They were all sympathetic to Thorpe.

Bloch suggests that Henry Brooke, the Home Secretary at the time of Norman’s police statement in 1962, would also have known. Furthermore, his predecessor Rab Butler had been given information concerning Jeremy’s activities which came to light during the investigation into Jeremy’s friend Jeremy Fry’s suitability for the role of best man at Princess Margaret’s wedding in 1960. By 1966 Brooke and Butler were both in the Lords.

Jeremy himself sought advice from Labour MP Leo Abse – a friend of George Thomas. Abse is someone else who has been subject to historic abuse investigations. Abse told Jeremy to deny everything. Jeremy’s conduct was so well-known that during the 1966 General Election campaign angry Conservative MPs hurled homophobic abuse at him.

Jeremy had been involved in other scandals as well. In 1961 he visited San Francisco, had a relationship with a young man and subsequently exchanged letters with him – Thorpe’s letters were written on Commons notepaper. The young man was under investigation by the FBI, so they found out about Jeremy. In 1963 the US Ambassador in London suggested to Lord Home (who was shortly to become PM) that Jeremy should not visit the US again. Home shared this info with the Liberal leader Jo Grimond. In 1964 Grimond passed the info on to Mark Bonham-Carter and Frank Byers, the leader of the Liberals in the Lords.

In 1965 in Tangiers Jeremy had tried to seduce an English tourist who was outraged and had contacted both the Liberal and Tory Associations in North Devon.

Jeremy had an affair with a John Wilkins and then employed him as a Parliamentary researcher. Wilkins developed an alcohol problem and in June 1966 whilst drunk he caused two scenes in one day in the Commons, shouting to onlookers that he was Jeremy’s jilted lover. Wilkins also knew about Norman from Bessell and had confided in Liberal MP Michael Winstanley that Jeremy was not suitable to succeed Grimond as leader of the Party. Winstanley agreed.

So by 1966 most senior Liberals had been directly told about Thorpe’s gay encounters and a lot of people had been told about Norman specifically. Jeremy’s conduct was very well-known. Presumably people had noticed not only that Jeremy had numerous encounters with different men but that for some reason a lot of Jeremy’s partners felt very badly treated by him.

By this time, the Liberal leader Jo Grimond was about to stand down and a leadership contest was looming. Grimond was known to dislike Jeremy but protected him to avoid scandal – Grimond also wanted to block Emlyn Hooson from the leadership. However Grimond’s wife and mother-in-law thought that Jeremy was great and wanted him to succeed Grimond as leader. David Steel also supported Jeremy for the leadership – Steel was Jeremy’s PPS and was indebted to Jeremy for his role in getting him elected. Steel offered to be his campaign manager.

Some in the Liberal Party expressed concerns that if Thorpe were to become leader, a scandal would inevitably occur as a result of his homosexual encounters. Nonetheless in Jan 1967 Thorpe did become leader. Bessell warned him that if his ‘past’ became public he would have to resign.

As well as friendships with those across the political divide – such as with Tony Benn – Jeremy hung out with celebs such as the Beatles, Bobby Charlton and Morecombe and Wise. He was mates with Princess Margaret – despite being banned from acting as best man at her wedding – and the Archbishop of Canterbury. His only real allies in the Liberal Party then were David Steel and Eric Lubbock (aka Lord Avebury), then the Liberals Chief Whip.

Jeremy was in the habit of offering people who did favours for him peerages. One person who actually got one was Gerran Lloyd, who parted with dosh for the Liberal Party.

In April 1967 Thorpe was in a fix again. He showed Bessell a letter from a rent boy called Bill Shannon who had asked Thorpe for a loan. Jeremy interpreted it as blackmail – Bessell wrote to Shannon, subsequently met him and threatened him with the police if he ever mentioned Jeremy’s name to anyone. In 1979 Shannon spoke about Jeremy after being contacted by the police and journos – Shannon’s account of Thorpe’s behaviour was remarkably similar to Norman’s. Shannon maintained that he had not been trying to blackmail anyone but had had the living daylights threatened out of him by Bessell.

In April 1967 Norman wrote to Bessell requesting his help – Norman was planning to go to America to live, but the problem of the NI card remained. He needed documentation to be in order to acquire a passport. In July 1967 Norman wrote to Bessell again – he was for some reason back in St George’s Hospital being treated by a Dr Brian O’Connell. O’Connell knew about Jeremy.

Jeremy’s response to this was to consult Lord Goodman and threaten Norman with a blackmail charge. Goodman suggested instead that Jeremy should set Norman up in America. Days later Norman turned up at Bessell’s office in a terrible state – Bessell told him that he would find him a job in the US. And offered him a retainer until he did. Sounds like hush money to me…

By 1967 Jeremy had decided that he needed a wife. He was friendly with Caroline Allpass, a society girl who worked at Sothebys. They subsequently married – Caroline developed a cult following and was hugely popular in north Devon. She knew about Jeremy’s homosexual encounters and by all accounts had no problem with them at all – she seemed to have been close to a number of gay men before her involvement with Jeremy. Caroline also knew about Norman.

After his engagement Jeremy fessed up to Bessell that he’d had an encounter with a New York street boy. He was also in a relationship with Guy Huntingdon – who later wrote about their affair – whom Jeremy met at a Buck House banquet whilst Guy worked there as a footman. Jeremy offered to get Guy a job at the BBC.

In May 1969 Norman married Sue Byers, who worked at the Tate. Sue’s sister was a relation of the actor Terry-Thomas and Norman and Sue lived in a cottage of theirs in Dorset. But Norman still had no NI card, so when Sue became pregnant they were unable to claim maternity payments. Norman rang the DHSSL in London and told the Private Secretary of the Social Security Minister David Ennals about Jeremy. Norman then rang Bessell and threatened to sell his story to the press if he didn’t get his NI card. Bessell acquired the NI card – and maternity payments for Sue. Norman had also told social security officials in Dorset and London about Jeremy.

Norman’s marriage did not last long – Sue left him. Norman’s divorce lawyer was Leonard Ross of Dorset Square. He knew about Jeremy. For some reason Jeremy paid Ross’s bill. Jeremy’s marriage didn’t last long either – Caroline was killed in a road accident in 1970. The explanations for Caroline’s loss of control at the wheel were questioned by people who knew her.

At about this time Bessell claimed that a blackmailer had turned up in north Devon claiming to possess compromising letters from Jeremy to Norman – Jeremy promised Bessell a peerage if he got rid of him, if necessary by murder. Jeremy didn’t need to hire a hit man on this occasion, the letters turned out to be forgeries.

Jeremy remarried in 1972 – someone even posher than Caroline, namely Marion, Countess of Harewood, a relative of the Queen’s via Marion’s first marriage. The biased judge at Jeremy’s Old Bailey trial made much of the virtues of Marion.

By the mid-1970s when Norman was being robbed and physically attacked, the world and his wife knew about him and Jeremy. The Metropolitan Police knew, the Devon and Cornwall Police knew, the North Devon Infirmary knew (they had treated Norman for his physical injuries), local social workers knew and a radical group in London called ‘Up Against The Law’ knew and alluded to it in their newspaper. In Sept 1975 Norman was arrested for the non-payment of an hotel bill – I don’t know why but he was kept in custody for two days, during which time he was warned that he might be in danger if he didn’t stop talking about Jeremy. He was confronted by Andrew Newton the hit man one month later.

The idiocy on the part of the authorities didn’t stop even after Newton had shot Norman’s dog and tried to shoot him. Avon and Somerset Police suggested that Norman had shot the dog himself to ‘create publicity’. It was only after the dog was shot that anything hit the newspapers – the West Somerset Free Press ran the story of the murdered dog and journalists who knew about Norman’s story contacted Jeremy. It was after Newton was charged with possessing a firearm with intent to danger life that the full story finally appeared in the national press – the final straw being Norman getting so fed up (he’d now been done for a minor social security fraud) that he mentioned Jeremy in Court and to the reporters. Jeremy issued a statement through Harold Wilson’s fixer Lord Goodman and the story finally exploded.

Unbelievably, considering how many people knew about the Jeremy and Norman story, everybody continued to try to brazen it out. The hit man claimed that Norman had been trying to blackmail him – David Holmes, Jeremy’s mate, later admitted that Goodman had come up with the plan to claim that Norman was trying to blackmail both Jeremy and Newton. Holmes also offered to pay Newton after his trial if Newton kept his and Jeremy’s name out of it. Marcia Williams, Harold Wilson’s infamous Secretary, begged Wilson to save Jeremy. Wilson made a statement in the House suggesting that BOSS, the South African security services, were behind Jeremy’s troubles on the grounds that they wanted to smear Jeremy because of his anti-apartheid stance. George Thomas, the newly appointed speaker, was most friendly towards Jeremy and discouraged some right wing Tories who tried to ask embarrassing questions.  It was revealed that in 1974 after seeing the dossier on Scott sent by Tim Kiegwin, Thatcher had stated that she had no intention of ‘smearing’ Jeremy.

The Mirror discovered that it was David Holmes who had purchased the incriminating letters of Norman’s from Roger Gleadle – Holmes had a meeting with the DPP and a statement was prepared on his behalf by David Freeman, the PM’s Press Solicitor. Holmes claimed that Wilson vetted the statement.

Goodman advised Jeremy to receive Sir Harold Evans, the editor of The Sunday Times and The Sunday Times subsequently published a number of articles sympathetic to Jeremy.

Newton’s trial in Exeter opened on the same day that Harold Wilson resigned and the announcement that Princess Margaret was to divorce. Not only was Margaret still a mate of Jeremy’s, but she would have consulted Wilson over her announcement. It has been suggested that Wilson timed his resignation to detract from both the Royal Divorce and Newton’s trial.

At Newton’s trial the prosecuting counsel was Lewis Hawser QC – an old friend of Jeremy’s. It is alleged that Hawser consulted with the Attorney General and Lord Goodman before the trial. Newton was found guilty – the maximum possible sentence was twenty years. He received two. But he must have still been disappointed – Jeremy’s friends had told him that people in high places would ensure that he would not go to prison. Hawser’s other high points included conducting the review of the case of James Hanratty in 1974 on the orders of Home Secretary Roy Jenkins – Hawser found the conviction to be safe – and defending Brian Field, the Brains behind the Great Train Robbery.

Most of the Liberal Party just wanted rid of Jeremy but he refused to go and no-one would put the boot in. The rest of the shithouse supported him in his time of need – Michael Foot believed that an ‘indiscretion’ was all that had occurred and Jeremy and Marion were guests at HM the Queen’s 50th birthday party at Windsor. Jeremy tried to stop the police from returning Norman’s documents to Norman by asking a friend of his to tell the police that Norman posed a threat to Jeremy.

Jeremy finally stood down as leader and David Steel was elected. Jeremy was appointed the Liberals Foreign and Commonwealth Spokesman which involved working with the newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Dr Death. Dr Death and Jeremy really got on well together – as they had done previously.

Two BBC reporters began researching for a book about Jeremy and Norman – Jeremy tried to stop publication of the book (he had successfully persuaded Penguin to withdraw another book about the case). The Director General of the BBC Sir Charles Curran was ‘supportive’ of the book – but the reporters were then given new BBC contracts depriving them of control of their material. So they left the BBC. Jeremy and Lord Goodman then tried to persuade Harold Wilson to withdraw his co-operation from the ex-BBC reporters.

Eventually on August 4 1978 Jeremy and three others were charged with conspiring to kill Norman. Jeremy was also charged with having incited David Holmes to murder Norman in 1969. Lord Avebury stood surety for Jeremy’s bail. Jeremy refused to resign from his seat – he even got the date of his next Court hearing postponed to fit in with his election campaigning, although Callaghan then changed his mind about calling an election.

A Defence Fund to help Jeremy with his legal costs was set up by Lord Lloyd Kilgerran. James Goldsmith donated 5k. Jeremy’s solicitor David Napley hired George Carman, whom Jeremy had known at university. Carman had been working on the Northern Circuit alongside a few other members of the shithouse, including Justice Cantley who presided over Jeremy’s trial at the Old Bailey. After his death, Carman’s son wrote a book in which he exposed Carman as a ferocious wife-beater, a drunk and a gambler. He claimed that when Carman worked in Manchester he spent much time boozing with criminals, prostitutes and generally questionable people. Jeremy’s mate David Holmes who was so instrumental in the plans to dispose of Norman was based in Manchester. The discussions with the hit man were alleged to have taken place in the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool. Carman came from Blackpool. Carman also had a secret gay life.

One of Jeremy’s co-defendants, George Deakin, was represented by Gareth Williams QC, later Lord Williams of Mostyn. Williams later became Attorney General under a Labour Gov’t. He represented Gordon Anglesea when Anglesea successfully sued for libel after he was accused of sexually abusing boys in care in north Wales. Williams originated from north Wales. Another co-defendant, John Le Mesurier, was represented by Denis Cowley QC. Cowley had stood as a Liberal candidate twice and was a barrister based in Nottingham on the Midland and Oxford Circuit. He was a Recorder of the Crown Court and in 1984 was appointed to the Mental Health Appeal Tribunal.

The forewoman of the jury at the Old Bailey was Celia Kettle-Williams, a member of the Liberal Party and an admirer of Jeremy.

I have mentioned that barely anyone in the West Country believed in Jeremy’s innocence. A lot of Tories were frank in their opinion that he was a total degenerate. Auberon Waugh – who lived in west Somerset – stood in the General Election (which was held just before the main trial opened at the Old Bailey in 1979) as the Dog Lovers candidate, in tribute to Norman’s murdered dog Rinka. Waugh placed an election address in the Spectator – Jeremy sought an injunction preventing Waugh from disseminating this address and the Master of the Rolls Lord Denning, who had been a mate of Jeremy’s for decades, obliged.

Jeremy lost north Devon at the election and for the first time in decades it became Tory. He was subsequently acquitted as were his co-defendants. He tried to continue in public life and very nearly succeeded too. He was persona non-grata in the Liberal Party but the rest of high society continued to embrace him. The only thing that really stopped him making a come-back was that he developed Parkinsons.

Numerous matters emerged in the trial suggesting that Jeremy and his circle – and indeed the political class and the ‘establishment’ as a whole – were actually far, far worse than anyone had ever suspected. People had blackmailed and defrauded each other like there was no tomorrow and had lied and swindled until the cows came home. Just about the only person in the Court room who hadn’t been involved in the most dreadful conduct was Norman Scott. Which was probably why he’d nearly ended up dead.

Reading Bloch’s book I concluded that Jeremy got away scot free for exactly the same reasons that Dafydd et al have – although absolutely everybody knew how serious their criminality was, so many of their peers were doing or had done equally offensive things that no-one dared cross their paths.

Whilst Jeremy was destroying Norman and conducting conversations regarding the best method of killing him, another political sex scandal blew up, involving Lord Lambton the Conservative defence Minister. Lord Lambton had been caught smoking joints in bed with call-girls. He resigned although he was quite upfront about it all. Lord Lambton was declared the lowest form of life on earth and was subsequently interviewed by Robin Day, who wore his characteristic bow tie and ludicrous expression and spat at Lord Lambton something along the lines of: you are a peer of the realm and a rich cultured man. Why do you have to have sex with a ‘WHORE???’ To which Lord Lambton responded ‘well I like a bit of variety, don’t you?’ That was the end for Lord Lambton. Who had not assaulted minors or anyone against their will, who had not accused the victim of their assaults of blackmailing them and who had not tried to have anybody murdered. Robin Day was a good friend of Jeremy Thorpe. And a high profile member of the Liberal Party. But it was Lord Lambton who copped it for getting stoned with consenting adults, in much the same way that Frank Bough was kicked out of the BBC after the cocaine and prostitutes revelations but Jimmy Savile remained friends with Royalty and senior Tories until the day that he died.

Other friends who supported Jeremy included William Rees-Mogg (who attempted to launch a ‘coalition of the centre’ with him), his close friend Clement Freud, his long-term friend Lord Hailsham and his childhood friend from Lloyd George’s circle, Jean Trumpington.

Jack Straw also knew about Jeremy and Norman. Joe Haines stated that at one point Harold Wilson called for a summary of the saga of Norman’s NI card from Gov’t sources – the task was undertaken by Jack Straw in his capacity as Barbara Castle’s policy advisor at the DHSS. In 2002, when Straw was Home Secretary, he maintained that he didn’t know that this report was for use against Thorpe.
