Anthem For Doomed Youth

The first line of Wilfred Owen’s famous poem was of course:

‘What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?’

Shirley Williams was one of those who knew that in north Wales, young people were dying as cattle at the hands of a sex trafficking ring – at least she did by the time that she was Secretary of State for Education and Science under PM Jim Callaghan, 1976-79 – but like so many others, she ignored it. Shirl later got into bed with (so to speak) Dr Death, who was an accomplice of some of the Top Docs who were facilitating the crime in north Wales (see post ‘Dr Death’). Dr Death was Chancellor of Liverpool University, 1996-09, Dafydd’s old alma mater, whilst that institution still employed a great many people who were colluding with Dafydd and the paedophiles. Shirl’s subsequent political bedfellow was David Steel, someone who was told what Cyril Smith was doing to boys in Rochdale, but who dismissed it as a matter of Cyril having merely ‘spanked a few bottoms’. I have recently discovered that one reason why the lid was kept on Cyril’s crimes when it was very nearly blown off in a very big way was that George Carman QC ensured that Smith’s activities were published nowhere else but in an alternative paper in Rochdale, because the trial of Jeremy Thorpe was approaching and the wagon would have come off the rails completely if Smith’s sex offending had become known to the wider public. One of George Carman’s pupils was a Tony Blair and a young barrister called Cherie Booth also worked in Carman’s chambers.

Jeremy Thorpe was the leader of the Liberal Party. After Jo Grimond was for a brief time caretaker leader when Thorpe stood down after even the Liberals realised that he had become too much, David Steel succeeded Thorpe as leader in 1976-88. It was Steel who memorably told the foot soldiers of the Liberal Party to ‘go home to your constituencies and prepare for government’ in 1981. A phrase which became the subject of as much piss-taking as Dr Death’s aspirations to ‘break the mould of politics’. Dr Death had been a member of Callaghan’s Cabinet along with Shirl.

Shirl has spent her entire life dining out on her mother being Vera Brittain, who wrote about her friends being wiped out whilst still young in WWI…

When Shirl refused Dafydd Wigley’s 1979 request to hold an inquiry into the mismanagement of UCNW (Bangor University) under paedophiles’ friend Sir Charles Evans whilst she was Education Secretary, UCNW was facilitating the crimes of Dafydd et al. The most unfortunate of Dafydd’s victims were at that time dying as cattle in the slaughter house which was Risley Remand Centre. The cattle continued dying in spite of questions in the House regarding the number of deaths at Risley (see post ‘Include Me Out’).

Politicians of all hues knew what was going on in north Wales and at Risley and concealed it. I have blogged extensively about how it was common knowledge in Parliament that Thatch’s friend and Minister Sir Peter Morrison was one of those abusing kids in care in north Wales and that Thatcher herself was told this. It would seem that not only did Thatcher’s Gov’t  conceal and collude with the crimes of Dafydd et al, but that the Tories assisted in the growth of the sex trafficking gang.

Yesterday I received a number of e mails in response to my recent posts. I have been told that ‘probably around 1984’, Lucille Hughes was given paid leave by Gwynedd County Council to tour around Europe with Lady Olga Maitland no less and was away ‘for at least a month’. No explanation was given and the few people who dared to ask questions were told to keep their noses out. In 1983, Lady Olga Maitland established ‘Women and Families For Defence’, a campaigning group set up by the Tories because of their concerns in the face of the support which the Greenham Common protesters were receiving. It was a party political project, yet Olga Maitland was assisted by Ann Widdecombe, another high Tory but who had not yet been elected to the Commons, who was given secret funding and support from her employers, the University of London. Widdecombe was pals with the Anglesey Conservative Association, although she had turned down their offer to be their Tory candidate in favour of what she thought was a better deal from another constituency (see post ‘Doris Karloff – Honest About Her Expenses But Not Much Else’). Widdecombe was a high profile anti-abortion campaigner and it seemed to be this that was the reason for the love-in between her and the Anglesey Tories.

At the time that Lucille undertook her Grand European Tour with Olga, Gwynedd County Council was led by Plaid and the Chief Exec was Ioan Bowen Rees, an adviser to Dafydd Wigley, the Plaid MP for Caernarfon. Under Bowen Rees, Gwynedd County Council acquired the reputation of having built ‘fortress Gwynedd’, with the Council prioritising issues of language and nationality, accompanied by a degree of overtly anti-English rhetoric.

A recent e mail told me that local people were so reluctant to allow their children to be taken ‘into care’ by Gwynedd that an underground fostering system had grown up among extended families. This was something that I noticed when I was a student. I presumed that it was a consequence of particularly helpful relatives, although I was told about the appalling social workers who did not give a damn about those in their care and I heard a lot about ‘cruelty’ to kids in care.

By the time that Lucille was touring Europe with Lady Olga Maitland, there had been many formal complaints about the abuse of children in care in north Wales and Mary Wynch had begun legal action against Dafydd et al. It was in 1985 that Mary’s case came before Lord Donaldson, the Master of the Rolls. The Welsh Office had colluded with the abuse of children in north Wales and knew that Gwynedd Health Authority was in such serious debt and chaos – by 1989 the Welsh Office had sent a hit squad of management consultants in (see post ‘A Visit To Gwynedd Archives’). In 1984, Brown and I complained about Gwynne the lobotomist to the University authorities and had received threats from Dr D.G.E. Wood, but I had not yet contacted MPs – but I did write to the GMC. It was in the first part of 1984 that the well-camouflaged paedophiles’ friend Eric Sunderland took over from Top Doc and long-standing paedophiles’ friend Sir Charles Evans as Principal of UCNW (see posts ‘Feet In Chains’ and ‘Criminals Are Getting Away With It’).

The Secretary of State for Wales was Nicholas Edwards and his gofer was Wyn – later Lord Wyn – Roberts (see post ‘The Cradle Of Filth’). It was in the summer of 1984 that the Octagon nightclub opened in Bangor, which immediately became a venue for the trafficking of the kids in care and the flogging of class A drugs on a scale previously unseen in the region (see post ‘Are You Local?’).

John Allen owned a villa in the south of France to which boys in care from north Wales were taken ‘for holidays’. Kids in care in north Wales were also taken to Amsterdam where they were sold for sex. Dafydd was holding ‘clinics’ in the south of France.

Ron Davies was elected as the Labour MP for Caerphilly in 1983. Ron had previously been an adviser to Mid-Glamorgan Education Authority, the organisation that concealed the sex offences of John Owen against his pupils (see post ‘Yet More Inglorious Bastards’).

Olga Maitland was subsequently elected as a Tory MP for Sutton and Cheam, but that wasn’t until 1992. When she was enjoying herself in Europe with Dafydd’s mistress, Olga was a journo for the ‘Sunday Express’, edited by the odious John Junor, who was a mate of George Carman QC, who knew what was happening in north Wales. Olga Maitland was married to barrister Robin Hay, who became a Crown Court Recorder.

No wonder no-one helped those of us in north Wales who were being threatened, harassed, fitted up for crimes – or who saw our friends murdered. Dafydd and Lucille were overtly assisted with developing their international people trafficking ring as long ago as the mid-80s by Thatcher’s Gov’t.

Anyone fancy telling us that ‘you didn’t know’ now? By 1984 I had told people – including Dr D.G.E. Wood – repeatedly that someone had threatened to murder Brown. I was ignored. That person subsequently tried to fracture Brown’s skull in the middle of Nottingham in broad daylight.

Anyone for law n order or getting tough on criminals? People died you fucking idiots, they died.

It was in 1983-84 that Brown and I started finding ourselves surrounded by some rather odd people who caused us a lot of bother. There were the two people whom Brown met when he replied to adverts in the ‘New Statesman’ offering work, just at the time when Wood et al knew that Brown was living with me on Anglesey and was scanning the adverts in the ‘New Statesman’ for part-time work opportunities. My post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’ discussed the insane and offensive Leslie Gore, a therapist living near Llangollen who worked as a part-time alcohol counsellor at the North Wales Hospital no less. Hot on the heels of Leslie Gore came Naomi Grunfeld, a teacher in the Orthodox Jewish school in north London, who had placed an advert in the ‘New Statesman’ claiming to be a post-graduate student with ‘writer’s block’ in need of extra tuition. It became clear that not only was Naomi nuts, but that she wanted Brown to actually do her MA for her. Brown noticed that Naomi seemed to have acquired her first degree as a result of someone else doing the work. Naomi was a student at Strawberry Hill College, Twickenham and the college seemed to know exactly what was going on.

Brown observed that Naomi’s advert should really have been in the lonely hearts column. The others in our house were greatly entertained by Naomi’s hot pursuit of Brown, particularly when four letters arrived in one day for him and when she started ringing the telephone box down the road asking the local teenagers who answered to go and find him. Brown escaped from Naomi by telling her that he was going abroad and was due to leave for Bristol airport. Naomi demanded a Bristol address, so Brown said ’10, Clifton Road’. Clifton was the area of Bristol where the Top Doctors hung out, so presumably one of Wood’s criminal colleagues received a few dozen crazy letters from Naomi. We didn’t realise that they were a load of sex traffickers at that time, so let’s hope Naomi gave them hell.

Then a few years later there was Diane Foxhills, who surpassed even Naomi, let herself into Brown’s house and was waiting in his bed for him.

MI5: all Brown wanted to do was to get on with his writing and avoid people who were trying to murder him. When he got so fed up of Diane that he actually told her to fuck off and get out of his face, he meant it. So that must have been why, a few years later, when he thought that the coast was clear, you sent Shar along. Who it transpired was not only mad but a member of the BNP, with a long-lost adult son who was in Combat 18. Then a few years after that, there was Emma, who precipitated what was probably a heart-attack in Brown. Not that it was ever diagnosed, because as you knew damn well, by then it was no longer safe for Brown or me to go near a Top Doctor, but Brown knows the symptoms of a heart-attack as well as the average stupid, negligent Top Doctor does. Then there was the vicious Denise Baker McLearns who moved in next to me at Llanllechid and spent the next few years harassing me and spreading vicious rumours about me. Then there was Donna Morgan, who moved into my place as a lodger, knew social workers from Conwy County Council, bounced a £500 rent cheque on me, stole everything of any value from my house, made an allegiance with Denise Baker McLearns and left me a letter telling me not to go to the police because she would tell them that I was a danger to children and Denise would ‘vouch for her’. I went to the police, who refused to tell me where Donna Morgan was living, on the grounds that she was under police protection after her ex-boyfriend had threatened her. That was the ex-boyfriend whom she had also threatened to set on me, a gangster from Llandudno, the mention of who’s name was supposed to have me shaking in my boots, but it didn’t because I didn’t know any gangsters from Llandudno. Although I do now, obviously. The gangsters in question were a family called Hogan.

As a treat, Donna Morgan made allegations about one of my neighbours, who had given her lifts and brought her son clothes and toys whilst Donna pleaded poverty. Years later I was told that she had made a false rape allegation against an innocent man who was only cleared after he’d been arrested and held in custody. But then Donna Morgan was shagging a number of officers in the North Wales Police, whom it would seem were, in return, happy to arrest targets of the paedophile gang at whom she pointed the finger.

Wouldn’t it have just been easier to have arrested Dafydd and Lucille and stopped the international people trafficking gang? The security services seem to have spent much time and money behaving like fuckwits and trying to get rid of Brown and me, but Dafydd and Lucille are still sitting in north Wales running CAIS. They’re probably surrounded by undercover officers ‘gathering intelligence’, but the one thing that no-one will do is put Dafydd and Lucille out of action…

We were initially targeted in 1983. Whatever MI5 were doing, they were definitely not stopping that trafficking gang.

Another reader of this blog has told me that David Bailey Hughes was the officer in charge at Y Gwyngyll, the children’s home in Llanfairpwll, when it was in meltdown and that the kids ‘were running wild, never going to school and being treated for genital lice’. It was the chaos at Y Gwyngyll which forced Bowen Rees to hold an ‘investigation’ – Bowen Rees called in his old mates from Dyfed County Council, where he had previously been County Secretary, to conduct the investigation… For info on the happenings at Y Gwyngyll and some of the people involved, see post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’.

Despite allegations of sexual abuse against Bailey Hughes – some of which stemmed from his time as a care officer at Ty’r Felin – he was subsequently given responsibility for Gwynedd County Council’s new fostering and adoption service, which was set up after Alison Taylor’s dismissal at Cartref Bontnewydd. The dreadful Malcolm John, ‘senior tutor in social work’ at Bangor University, moonlighted for years as a ‘consultant’ for this ‘service’, without the knowledge of Bangor University, who did suspect that he had another job somewhere because he was so infrequently in the university (see post ‘Local Accessories’). There were many people at Bangor who were at their wits end with regard to Malcolm John, but they were being undermined by the toxic Lyn Meadows, the HR Director and paedophiles’ friend who now sits on the Betsi Board. I was told that one Professor who had tried to protect other staff from Malcolm John’s dreadful conduct was threatened with disciplinary action for ‘bullying’ from Meadows.

My correspondent informed me that the paedophiles’ friends setting up shop at Cartref Bontnewydd forced the closure of at least one fostering and adoption service in the area that had been running for decades.

I have been told that at least one girl of 14 in the care of Gwynedd County Council was given oral contraception without her step-mother’s knowledge, although this teenager did not have a boyfriend and had not shown much interest in acquiring one. My correspondent suggests that girls ‘were being prepared for action on the sly’. This was rather the impression that I formed as a result of my encounters with the Top Doctors. OK I wasn’t 14, but all any of them wanted to do was talk to me about sex and my ‘boyfriend’. I too was spontaneously offered advice on contraception. QUE??? I was a grown-up who was quite capable of deciding such matters for myself and at no time did I ever enter those consulting rooms seeking advice on sexual problems. Other mental health patients I spoke to had similar experiences. It was suggested to me the other day that perhaps the Top Docs had gained the wrong impression because I used to sport black nail varnish, coloured hair etc. For God’s sake, I was in my 20s and furthermore if I’d gone in there wearing a burkha I’d have been met with the same response. They were trafficking young people into prostitution – Dafydd et al even targeted boys of 11, did they ‘ask for it’?

My post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’ mentioned that supply of nice young doctors who arrived in north Wales in the 1980s when Gwynne and Dafydd were becoming excruciatingly embarrassing. Those of us who had complained were then referred to the nice young doctors – who sadly were assisting the old gropers, but had better manners and concealed their activities more effectively. One such nice young doctor was Tony Francis, another was Dr Lyndon Miles.

Since mentioning Lyndon in my post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’, I have received an e mail from someone who raised concerns about Dafydd and the paedophiles who’s health was subsequently ruined by one Lyndon Miles, who had seemed such a nice man. I had similar experiences. After confronting Gwynne and Dafydd, I encountered years of Top Doctors – not just in north Wales – whom I did not complain about and who were charm itself to me. When I finally accessed my medical notes, I read what they had written to third parties about me without my knowledge and it was pure poison. Other patients who dared complain had the same experience. One man in north Wales who had as much crap as I did from the Top Doctors described them as a ‘cartel’. Which pretty much sums it up. This was an extensive network of corrupt professional people involved in serious organised crime who were assisted by corrupt police officers and members of the security services.

Here’s someone else who, at the beginning of his career, exploited his status as a Nice Young Doctor:

The Lord Owen
Official portrait of Lord Owen crop 2.jpg

Dr D.G.E. Wood really loved Dr Death. Wood said to me ‘Owen’s got guts’. I responded by telling Wood that nevertheless he didn’t have any seats.

Dr Death, a friend of people traffickers!

Here’s a reminder of days of yore:

In my post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’ I mentioned that Lyndon worked in the Student Health Centre at Bangor and knew exactly what Wood, Gwynne etc were doing, but colluded with them. There was another Nice Young Doctor who rolled up at the Student Health Centre in about 1984 as well, whom distressed students were urged to meet as an alternative to Gwynne the lobotomist – Dr Chris Tilsen. Dr Tilsen, like Dr Miles, didn’t cause the sort of disasters that Gwynne did, but Dr Tilsen knew what was happening…

I did know of one student house who’s inhabitants had a bad experience with Dr Tilsen. One of the boys in the house caught measles and his girlfriend rang the GP – Dr Tilsen. Tilsen initially refused to go out to see him, but because his girlfriend grovelled, a rather bad-tempered Tilsen subsequently arrived, took a look at the ailing student and said ‘he’s got measles, what’s the problem?’ When our friends told us about this, I mentioned that measles can cause deafness and Brown observed that it can occasionally result in death. Our friend didn’t die of measles, but this was the sort of response that local people received from the Top Doctors. They really were very often not that helpful. Furthermore they all knew that people were living in severe poverty, that the ‘services’ were rife with corruption and that the infrastructure of the whole region was being utilised by a sex trafficking gang.

I was told some years ago that Dr Tilsen’s wife Amanda was an Angel who worked at the School of Healthcare Sciences at Bangor University and was very unpopular among her Angel colleagues. That doesn’t say anything about Amanda Tilsen, because nearly everyone in that School was previously employed by the corrupt regional NHS and they spent their whole lives in a state of civil war with each other.

‘We didn’t know.’

Yes you did.

There seemed to be a push in the mid-80s to conceal the damage being done by Dafydd and co. As well as all those Nice Young Doctors, the Student Health Centre employed Liz Stables as an Angel (see post ‘Just A Language Divide?’), who made friends with all those students who had complained, pumped them for info and reported back to the Top Docs, who then shafted us all. Liz was a friend of Dafydd. Liz replaced a crotchety old bat who was worthy of a prize in ‘Viz’ magazine’s ‘insincere smiles’ feature, who had been employed as the Angel up there for eons, but I can’t remember her name. She was so unpleasant that I refused to have anything to do with her, so Liz was sent in my direction.

I mentioned in a previous post that witnesses who gave evidence at the Waterhouse Inquiry, as well as those people who worked for the Inquiry, were granted immunity from prosecution, which I suspect is why those who ran the paedophile gang such as Lucille agreed to give evidence. None of the witnesses can now be prosecuted for abusing those kids. I have been told that the Attorney General – Sir Nicholas Lyell – did grant the immunity but excluded perjury and perverting the course of justice. Therefore, if Waterhouse and co had not constrained themselves, any number of people could have been referred for prosecution. One such person I am told would have been social worker Mari Roberts, who lied in her evidence to the Inquiry (see post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’).

The temporary immunity should not have stopped the North Wales Police investigating the evidence that emerged of abuse, of widespread conspiracy, of perverting the course of justice and of misconduct in public office. Documents in my possession also contain ample evidence of these matters.

I have received more info regarding Ceryl Wyn Davies, the serial child sex offender defended by Ronnie Waterhouse’s mate Emlyn Hooson QC – another one of David Steel’s colleagues – who was given a job as Headmaster of Tanygrisiau School at Blaenau Ffestiniog by Gwynedd County Council, despite his previous imprisonment for molesting children (see post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’). I have been told that there were many complaints about Ceryl Wyn which were ignored and it is alleged that he had a family member on the Council who afforded him protection. My correspondent has promised me more information, so once I receive that I’ll blog further.

In my post ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’ I mentioned that it was Cartrefle College in Wrexham – which later became NEWI and then Glyndwr University – who assessed the members of the paedophile gang as being suitable to qualify as social workers. I received information from someone who told me that standards at Cartrefle were appalling and that in the early 1980s at least, Cartrefle had a hotline to Lucille Hughes and Nefyn Dodd and were passing on inappropriate info about students to them, with a view to identifying potential whistleblowers. Cartfrefle qualifications were verified by the University of Salford. Salford University knew that there was serious abuse of children in care in north Wales, because one of their own students on placement reported it to them. He was withdrawn from the placement and his evidence was dismissed by Ronnie Waterhouse on the grounds that he’d only been on placement in north Wales for a matter of days so he didn’t have the full picture re the standards of care for children in north Wales.

Salford University still provides social work training and whilst I was working at Bangor University, I and two colleagues had the most extraordinary experience with their ‘Research Professor’ Stephen Shardlow. It was so weird that we wondered whether Shardlow had personal difficulties which had resulted in him not being able to function at work – I kept our e mail exchanges  – but one of my colleagues was later told by someone at Salford that a new ‘Research Professor’ had been appointed who did not know anything about research, who did no work and who had only been appointed to give credibility to a very troubled dept. It was a man called Stephen Shardlow. Shardlow had managed to get himself appointed as the editor of a major social work journal. I wonder how that happened.

Salford was established as a University in 1967. Between 1967-91, the Chancellor was Prince Philip. So he flew the flag for Salford throughout those happy years when the institution provided qualifications for a paedophile gang and continued to do so even after one of their own students blew the whistle. Princess Fergie followed Phil the Greek as Chancellor until 1995, when Sir Walter Bodmer, the man who was at the helm of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 1990 when the ICRF was involved in a major research fraud scandal which resulted in the (presumed) suicide of Prof Tim McElwain (see posts ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’), succeeded her. In 2005 Sir Martin Harris was appointed Chancellor. Harris was in post when Stephen Shardlow was given a job that his colleagues maintained that he should never have been given… Martin Harris comes from Ruabon near Wrexham and has passed through many institutions run by the paedophiles’ friends.

What of the VCs of Salford, the people who had their hands on the tiller? Clifford Whitworth was the VC, 1967-74. Salford University was in full swing qualifying paedophiles at that time, but I can’t find any trace of him on the internet. So he must have been the fall guy. Whitworth’s successor Sir John Horlock was just as guilty however – he was in post 1974-81, when many more child abusers were given qualifications and when that hotline between Cartrefle and Lucille and Nefyn Dodd was established. It would be difficult for even someone as dedicated to the science of cover-up and denial as Ronnie Waterhouse to airbrush John Horlock out of history, because John Horlock was responsible for a considerable piece of HE history.

Sir John Horlock was a mechanical engineer who built his reputation by refining gas turbines in jet engines for use in military aircraft. He was raised in Edmonton, North London and attended The Latymer School, Edmonton. He went from there to St John’s College, Cambridge, where he gained his PhD in 1958.

Ronnie Waterhouse went to St John’s College, Cambridge and Ronnie was a man who certainly maxed out on the utilisation of alumni networks. Furthermore, the appalling Deb Everard, one of the biggest problems at St George’s Hospital Medical School in the late 1980s/early 90s, was a Tory Councillor in Edmonton. Everard knew about Oliver Brooke the paedophile Prof of Paediatrics at St George’s and she knew about much other wrongdoing as well – indeed she was responsible for some of it. Everard was considered untouchable although she was not in a senior role – one lame attempt to discipline her was thwarted by the MSF rep David Hole. Who was corrupt himself, loathed Everard anyway but was involved in the misconduct along with everyone else and thus was obliged to defend her. Meanwhile everyone dined out on the personal friendship that their Head of Dept, Prof Geoffrey Chamberlain, maintained with Cilla, the nation’s auntie. It was a lorra lorra laffs, unless you were someone being targeted by this bunch who were concealing a paedophile gang. Everard also had an inexplicable friendship with Prof Ian Craft, the Top Doc who ran the private clinic where practices considered even too unacceptable for the rest of the sharks in the IVF world were routine, such as the implantation of eight or nine embryos in the full knowledge that five or six of them would be aborted at a later stage in the pregnancy. Why Ian Craft, an elitist very rich man, gave Deb Everard the time of day I do not know, but it will have involved questionable practices of some sort. If Everard was in reach of Sir John Horlock, I’m sure that she would have made use of him.

After graduation, Horlock worked for Rolls Royce at Derby, who sponsored him whilst he was doing his PhD, providing him with £30k worth of equipment at 1951 prices.

By the 1960s, there was a paedophile gang in the Derbyshire area with links to north Wales – the problems in Derbyshire were thought to have pre-dated the 1960s.

After he finished his PhD, Horlock stayed at Cambridge. He subsequently took a one year sabbatical at MIT and turned down a job offer from Rolls Royce in favour of the position in 1958 of Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Liverpool. At Liverpool, Horlock oversaw a major expansion of the mechanical engineering building. Horlock’s Indie obituary tells us that he was ‘invited by Pergamon Press to edit a series of books in their Commonwealth Library and was subsequently invited to London to meet Pergamon’s proprieter, Robert Maxwell, which was ‘the beginning of a relationship which bore fruit later when he went to the OU’. I suspect that Horlock’s relationship with the Cap’n might have borne fruit before that, because Salford University has a Maxwell Building. Here it is:

  • File:Maxwell Building, Salford University.jpg - WikiVisually
  • Maxwell Building | Conferencing@Salford | University of ...

That the building was named after the Cap’n suggests that he probably paid for it, although I have not yet had a chance to inquire about this. Could this have been where some of the missing millions went? The Cap’n was the Labour MP for Buckingham, 1964-70, whilst Harold Wilson was PM.

The Cap’n went overboard in Nov 1991, whilst I was being forced out of my job at St George’s and whilst my friend who wanted to make a documentary about north Wales was being forced out of her job at the Royal Television Society. It was just after the Cap’n was found floating in the Atlantic that Tony Francis et al pulled out all of the stops (several times over the course of a few weeks) in an attempt to have me imprisoned, on the basis of statements that the MDU and their solicitors Hempsons knew constituted perjury which after the most florid allegations were demonstrated to be untrue, eventually resulted in a last ditch attempt to prosecute me for contempt (see post ‘The Sordid Role Of Sir Robert Francis QC’).

Headington Hall was the home of Robert Maxwell for the last 32 years of his life, which he rented from Oxford City Council. It is now part of Oxford Brookes University.
There was organised abuse of children – and associated abuses of psychiatry – in Oxfordshire, which was concealed by, among other people, Barbara Kahan – who was appointed as an adviser on children in care to Ted Heath’s Gov’t in 1970 – and her husband, Dr Vladimir Kahan. Babs remained as a Gov’t adviser until the 1980s, after which she continued to make herself useful by failing to notice that many of those with whom she was working on various child care and education/training projects were paedophiles and also by Chairing the Inquiry into the Staffordshire Pindown Scandal and not reporting just how bad things were there (see post ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’).
Tom Burns, who worked at St George’s whilst the staff concealed organised child abuse and who admitted that he believed my allegations regarding what was happening in north Wales, later found himself a Chair at Oxford University. As did Mark Williams, who worked with Dafydd and the paedophiles in north Wales, whilst committing the research fraud which was Mindfulness (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’). Richard Tranter, who joined the merry gang at the Hergest Unit for a stint as a junior doctor and then returned as a senior doctor, trained at Oxford, as did his wife Siobhan, who in her capacity as a tutor of Angels in Bangor University failed to pass on concerns from students that patients were being abused.
The crimes of Cap’n Bob are worthy of a blog in themselves, so I’ll do a bit of digging and see what I can find that is most relevant. Obviously, as a starter,  there was Cap’n Bob’s purchase of ‘The Mirror’, which employed Alastair Campbell as a journo and some dodgy big hitters as in-house lawyers and used the services of George Carman QC…

Sir John Horlock returned to Cambridge as Professor of Engineering in 1967. In the early 1970s, Horlock ‘played a major role’ in the activities of the Science Research Council, Chairing the Mechanical Engineering Committee. Horlock witnessed the success of his physicist colleagues in bagging funds from the SRC, so he suggested to a colleague that they should apply for a major grant themselves. Before you could say ‘massive conflict of interest’, Horlock’s Dept received a grant of £300k from the SRC and used it to found, in 1973, the Whittle Laboratory, Horlock becoming its Director.

In 1974 Horlock was appointed as VC of Salford University. There doesn’t seem to be much information available regarding Horclock’s time as VC of Salford, possibly because Cap’n Bob played a role in the ‘achievements’, so Salford have decided that it is best forgotten.

Much has been written about Horlock’s subsequent job as VC of the Open University, 1981-90. The OU cannot thank Horlock enough for his contribution, because many believed that he stopped Keith Joseph, who was Education Secretary, 1981-86, from closing the OU down. Not only did Horlock successfully defend the OU from Gov’t cuts, but he expanded the institution, enrolling the first postgrads and overseeing the foundation of, in 1983, the Open University Business School.

The OU was regarded by many as ‘Harold Wilson’s gimmick’ and for some people this alone was enough reason to close it down. In my post ‘The White Heat Of This Revolution’ I describe how Harold Wilson gave the OU project to Nye Bevan’s widow Jennie Lee and it was Jennie Lee and Wilson’s friend and solicitor Lord Goodman who succeeded in getting it off the ground, partly by providing a huge underestimate regarding costs and not providing a more realistic figure until it was too late to scrap the development. Arnold Goodman was widely believed to be dishonest and he acted as the solicitor for Jeremy Thorpe immediately after Thorpe was charged with incitement and conspiracy to kill, before Sir David Napley took over. Jennie Lee know about the abuse of children in Staffordshire that was being concealed and she also knew that from the very inception of the NHS, Top Doctors assisted in concealing the abuse, neglect and sometimes deaths of the poorer and more vulnerable citizens. What with Nye Bevan having become a folk hero in the Labour Party because of him being the driving force behind the NHS, nearly everyone colluded with the myth that ‘poor people’ benefited from the NHS to a greater extent than the better off. They didn’t.

It was obviously fairly important that no-one pissed off Jennie Lee, who outlived her husband by many years. The OU had support from some unlikely people. Despite the hostility of many Tories towards it, Thatcher, when she was Education Secretary in the early 1970s, opposed her Cabinet colleagues to save it. Thatcher was subsequently a fan of John Horlock.

Horlock himself claimed that in the fight to save the OU in the mid-80s, he reminded many Tory MPs that the number of students enrolled with the OU in their constituencies exceeded their majorities. He mentioned that one of the strongest supporters of the OU was the MP Tam Dalyell, who became a good friend of Horlock’s. Tam Dalyell wrote many of the obituaries of his generation of MPs. I have been really impressed by Dalyell’s ability to repackage the characters and track-records of the most unpleasant of his colleagues, including some of those that have since been exposed as having done some truly dreadful things. There are a lot of clues in Dalyell’s biography that he was concealing the crimes of Dafydd et al. Keith Joseph was said to have given the OU a reprieve after receiving so many letters from people who had benefited from the OU. The OU also received considerable support from the HE Minister, William Waldegrave, who knew about the abuse of children and associated criminality in north Wales and elsewhere and who was Health Secretary, 1990-92, whilst all that trouble at St George’s and in north Wales was concealed.

The OU provides training for a lot of health and social care staff, including social workers. I’m not sure when the OU started training social workers, but it was churning out psychology graduates who later became clinical psychologists as long ago as the 1970s. The really great thing about the OU for local authorities who have a problem with the abuse of people in their care, is that if their trainee social workers do a degree with the OU rather than another university, that local authority does not have to deal with students who are whistleblowers, because the OU just provides theoretical input, it is entirely up to the local authority as to whether the students qualify or not. There is no other party to negotiate with. Some years ago a whole series of social work students at Bangor University reported very serious problems on placement with Anglesey County Council. Staff from Bangor University defended the students, only to be told by Anglesey County Council that if the ‘problems with the students’ continued, Anglesey would hire its own staff as trainee social workers and qualify them through the OU. The ‘problem students’ were all whistleblowers. The students didn’t know this, but the people who’s conduct caused them such distress were the dear old paedophiles’ friends.

Whilst researching for this blog, I noticed that Harold Wilson systematically tied off all routes for professionals who might raise concerns about the abuse of vulnerable people by the state by the creation of supposedly citizen-friendly structures. Tony Blair did a very similar thing – the ‘service user empowerment’, the ‘social inclusion’, even the Human Right Act, were all used to give abusive state structures more and more power over citizens who raised questions about the conduct of the state.

Harold Wilson’s widening of HE opportunities did benefit people, but it was particularly effective at producing a whole cadre of state educated and state employed professionals who  found themselves in a position in which it would be virtually impossible to blow the whistle on serious state-endorsed crime – such as organised child abuse within the NHS and social services – and continue their professional careers. This situation exists today – it’s why there is a former Cardiff cardiac surgeon working as a cabbie after blowing the whistle on patient safety issues. Even if someone says OK then I’ll work in the voluntary sector, or private sector or academia, they will be forced out, because the funding and/or inspection regimes of those sectors is the responsibility of the state and the people in those funding/inspection roles are there after years of colluding with abuse.

I’ve watched the workings and the effects of this rigged system for a long time, but I didn’t realise that the roots of it were in Harold Wilson’s Gov’t. The long tentacles extended into the world of the arts as well, but I will return to that in a future post. Meanwhile, I’ll just mention a few things that were highlighted in Horlock’s obituary.

Horlock was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1976 and then served as its Vice-President and Treasurer during his retirement. Horlock ‘was an adviser to government and industry for 50 years. This included work with the National Grid, on the safety of nuclear installations and at the Aeronautical Research Council, as well as numerous other important contributions’.

Horlock was ‘knighted in 1996 for services to science, engineering and education’. It could be a complete coincidence, but 1996 was the year that the Waterhouse Inquiry was announced and established.

So Horlock advised on the safety of nuclear installations – a controversial and sensitive area. It was also an area in which on a number of occasions at least, Gov’ts did not keep the public informed. Lord Brian Flowers was another person who was involved in matters nuclear – he was a member of the Atomic Energy Authority, 1971-81 – who concealed Dafydd and the paedophiles’ crimes as well as medical research fraud and much other wrongdoing in the University of London (see post ‘The White Heat Of This Revolution’). Sir Alec Merrison was another nuclear physicist who was called in by Gov’t with regard to the Top Docs and their crimes.  Merrison was Senior Physicist at CERN, 1957-60; Chair of Experimental Physics at Liverpool University, 1960-69; VC of Bristol University from 1969. Sir Keith Joseph, when he was Health Secretary, appointed Merrison in 1973 to Chair a Committee of Inquiry after thousands of Top Docs threatened a mass public strike after a dispute with the GMC (see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’). In 1976 Barbara Castle, then then Secretary of State for the DHSS, along with her Health Minister, Dr Death, appointed Merrison to Chair a Royal Commission on NHS Reform.

I grew up virtually on the doorstep of Hinkley Point and because I was used to it being there and I knew so many people who worked there, I took it as a fact of life. I had heard, as a teenager, that various worrying things had gone on at Hinkley that the wider public were kept substantially in the dark about, but what was more well-known among the local teenagers was that some of the people at Hinkley Point were thieving on a grand scale – not just pilfering pens and stationery, but they were making off with just about anything, building materials, household necessities, there was even a trade in whole bathrooms that had been stolen from Hinkley. It was a trough as deep as the NHS. The security out there was either very lax or the people driving off with the goodies had dirt of a valuable kind on the senior managers. After I left Somerset, one of the biggest accidents in UK nuclear power history happened at Hinkley – tons of radioactive CO2 was accidentally released into the atmosphere. Not a word appeared in the Somerset media, although there was coverage in the ‘New Statesman’. Then there were the local leukaemia clusters that no-one ever got to the bottom of – they definitely existed, but people were strangely reluctant to undertake a rigorous analysis. Some far-fetched theories were put forward – such as that the workers who migrated into Somerset from elsewhere when Hinkley was first built introduced new viruses into the local population… It’s not as if the Hinkley workers were missionaries going into darkest Africa, it was only Somerset. It could theoretically have been an explanation, but, er, radiation-related causes might be a more obvious one.

The best Hinkley-related story occurred some years before the CO2 leak. When I was about 11, a local man caused a major outrage by breaking into the houses of three people in one night and violently raping the women in each house. He was caught and arrested but was not imprisoned because, as his mother freely admitted, his uncle was an influential man locally and ‘got him off’. The rapist didn’t get off completely – he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sat in Tone Vale Hospital near Taunton for a few months. Tone Vale didn’t have anything like the reputation that the North Wales Hospital did, but it was a receptacle for people who’d overdone the cider, but also those who had alleged abuse on the part of people with spotless reputations. This man ‘made a full recovery’ and returned to live locally, much to the anger of some who alleged that women and children had been placed in danger as a result of this small town corruption. The rapist then got a job at Hinkley Point. After a while, there were ructions. He had ‘gone mad’ again and was publicly hauled off to Tone Vale by the police. His schizophreniform symptoms of serially raping people had not popped up once more, but some new ones had. He had alleged that there were terrible things happening at Hinkley Point, that the safety of local people was at risk and that the trade unions and management were covering up very serious wrongdoing…. He spent longer in Tone Vale recovering from his Hinkley-related delusions than he did recovering from raping three women in one night.

No wonder people were cheerfully driving out of Hinkley Point in the possession of thousands of quids worth of goodies without being stopped.

So the OU was Harold Wilson’s and Jennie Lee’s ‘baby’, which received a bit of help from Lord Goodman to get it off the ground.

In 1967, Wilson’s Cabinet set up a Planning Committee in 1967, which kicked off the launch of the OU via its recommendations, which were accepted by the then Secretary of Education and Science, Ted Short aka Lord Glenamara. Ted Short trained as a teacher at Durham University – he later did a law degree at London University as well – and after WWII worked as a teacher and was the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne branch of the NUT. Short was elected as a Councillor on Newcastle-Upon-Tyne City Council in 1948. He was the Labour MP for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 1951-76; Education Secretary, 1968-70, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, 1972-76; Lord President of the Council, 1974-76 and also served as Chancellor of Northumbria University.

A paeophile gang operated in the north east with direct links to Dafydd’s gang in north Wales for decades. Huge numbers of children from the north east were sent to children’s homes in north Wales and two key figures in the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, Matt Arnold and Peter Howarth, relocated to Bryn Estyn from Axwell Park Approved School in Gateshead. The Lord President of the Council serves as the visitor for a number of universities, including the University of Wales.

Ted Short was given a peerage in 1977. Why was there such a problem with child abuse in north Wales and mismanagement at UCNW which Shirl refused to investigate? Look no further than Ted…

The Committee was Chaired by Sir Peter Venables, the VC of Aston University. Other members included Lord Goodman, who was at that time the Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain; Dr Eric Briault, the Deputy Education Officer of ILEA; Prof Roy Shaw, the Director of Adult Education at Keele University and Prof Hilde Himmelweit of the School of Social Psychology.

Can anyone see some paedophiles’ friends hidden in the picture? Lord Goodman for a start. ILEA was busy colluding with the export of kids in the care of London boroughs to north Wales where they were abused and trafficked back down to London. Keele University employed Peter Righton, a paedophile who was a social work academic who used his work to justify adults having sex with children – Keele has welcomed a number of other paedophiles’ friends over the years. Prof Hilde Himmelweit completed her PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry under the discredited H.J. Eyesenck (see post ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’).

Sir Peter Venables was Principal of the College of Advanced Technology (which evolved into Aston), 1955–1966 and Aston University’s first Vice-Chancellor, 1966–1969. He was born in Birkenhead and attended Birkenhead Secondary School and Liverpool University, where he obtained a degree in chemistry, an education diploma and a PhD. He served as the Open University’s first Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council. Peter Venables is yet another person who seems to have largely disappeared from the internet. I wonder why that might be.

Venables will have known about the corruption linked to Dafydd et al in Liverpool University and he will also have known about the equally serious corruption in Birmingham University, the City Council and the West Midlands Police. Kids in care in Birmingham were sent to children’s homes in north Wales and the Medical School in Birmingham contained Dafydd’s mate Robert Bluglass.

There was also a heavy presence from Sussex University on the Planning Committee – Asa Briggs, the then VC of Sussex; Lord Fulton, the former VC of Sussex; and Norman McKenzie, the Director of the Centre for Educational Technology at Sussex University. So someone in Harold Wilson’s Cabinet was desperate to have Sussex University wielding influence over the OU Planning Committee.

Lord John Fulton was a friend of Harold Wilson. I have blogged about John Fulton previously, but he’s worth resurrecting here, particularly as I have a suspicion that he might disappear from the internet soon as well.

John Fulton’s father was Angus Fulton, Principal of University College, Dundee. Fulton was born in Dundee and went to school there, then went to St Andrew’s University, then onto Balliol College. Ted Heath went to Balliol, but was 14 years younger than Fulton. During WWII, Fulton served in the Mines Dept and the Ministry of Fuel and Power, which was when he became a colleague and friend of Harold Wilson.

Fulton was Principal of University College, Swansea, 1947-59 – the employer of Rhodri Morgan’s father as well as of Dafydd’s buddy Saunders Lewis. Then Fulton was VC of the University of Wales, 1952-54 and again between 1958-59. In 1959 Fulton was appointed Principal of University College Sussex, which became the University of Sussex in 1961. He remained there until 1967.

So Fulton left Sussex the year before John Allen opened the Bryn Alyn Community, where kids in care were abused and then trafficked to John Allen’s brothels – in Brighton, Sussex and in London. Within just a few years, business was booming and many more people with money to spare moved to north Wales and brought isolated buildings which they turned into children’s homes or residential schools, thus expanding the business of the sex trafficking gang which was now well-established in north Wales. The business was considerably assisted by the Children Act, 1975, which was passed as a result of Leo Abse cultivating the company of Jim Callaghan and his wife Audrey and persuading Callaghan to set up the Houghton Committee, of which Leo Abse was a leading light (see post ‘Cry, The Beloved Country’). The Houghton Committee ‘took advice’ from Dafydd’s friends and associates who were concealing the booming business in the trafficking of young people in north Wales and who recommended changes in the law…

Leo Abse was a good friend of George Thomas, who was molesting children. Harold Wilson appointed Thomas as Secretary of State for Wales in 1968 and at that time the responsibility for the NHS and social services in Wales was transferred to the Welsh Office. Abse himself has been the subject of historical child abuse investigations. Audrey Callaghan concealed child abuse in the London boroughs before she relocated to south Wales (see post ‘Cry, The Beloved Country’). George Thomas and Callaghan hated each other, but Thomas got on very well with Harold Wilson because Thomas was a real vote winner in south Wales, what with all that Methodist lay-preaching and chumminess with the Royal Family (see ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’). And chumminess with Thatcher as well, but Thomas was forgiven that, it was just part of his natural charm.

Fulton went straight from the centre of a well-planned sex trafficking operation onto the Planning Committee for the OU.

Fulton was also: Chairman of the Universities Council for Adult Education and of the Council of the National Institute of Adult Education (1952-55); Chair of UCCA, 1961-64; Chair of the BBC and ITA Committees on Adult Education, 1962-65; Governor of the BBC, 1966-71; Vice-Chair of the BBC, 1966-67 and in 1968-71. Fulton was Chairman of the British Council, 1968-71 and in 1964, Wilson invited Fulton on the Committee of the Civil Service in 1964, which reported in 1968.

Fulton was involved in university policy making in Malta, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Hong Kong. In 1962, Fulton Chaired the Committee which established the new Chinese University of Honk Kong. He was Chair of the Inter-University Council of HE Overseas, 1964-68.

Well if you’ve got an outstandingly helpful paedophiles’ friend, you might as well give him international responsibilities.

Lord Fulton died in 1986, at home, among friends – in Jimmy Savile Central, Yorkshire.

I haven’t yet found any clue as to what precipitated Wilson’s sudden resignation as PM in 1976, but I suspect that it will have had rather more to do with this lot than with Wilson being a KGB agent, or getting fed up of being PM or believing that he was developing Alzheimers. He was an unscrupulous old bugger who rigged the whole of the UK’s state infrastructure to facilitate and conceal child abuse because George Thomas pulled in the votes in south Wales and Leo Abse was a very effective henchman.

The man who succeeded Lord Fulton as VC of Sussex and was in post as John Allen’s brothels in Brighton filled up with kids from the north Wales children’s homes was Asa Briggs, who was VC, 1967-76. Asa had his feet well under the table at Sussex by then though – in 1966 he was appointed Professor of History at Sussex, while also serving as Dean of the School of Social Studies, 1961–65 and PVC, 1961–67.

Asa Briggs was an historian who was born in Keighley, Yorkshire – he was off to a flying start in terms of a career as a paedophiles’ friend then. He went to Keighley Boys Grammar School and then Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. During WWII he served with the Intelligence Corps and at Bletchley Park. Whilst at Cambridge, Briggs had been a friend of Howard Smith, who became DG of MI5 in 1979. Between 1955-61, Briggs was Professor of Modern History at Leeds University and then moved to Sussex. Between 1976-91, Briggs was Provost of Worcester College, Oxford. He was Chancellor of the OU, 1978-94.

Briggs held a visiting appointment at the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University in the late 1980s and again at the renamed Freedom Forum Media Studies Center at Columbia in 1995–96. Callaghan gave him a peerage in 1976.

Between 1961-95, Briggs wrote a five-volume text on the history of broadcasting in the UK from 1922-74 — essentially, the history of the BBC, who commissioned the work. Briggs’ other works included the corporate history of Marks & Spencer – the company which provided the loan for the paedophiles’ friends of the Royal College of Psychiatrists to acquire a grandiose building in Belgravia which nearly bankrupted them (see post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’). In 1987, Briggs was invited to be President of the Bronte Society. He presided over the Society’s centenary celebrations in 1993 and continued as President until he retired from the position in 1996. He was also President of the William Morris Society from 1978-91 and President of the Victorian Society (UK) from 1986 until his death.

Briggs died at home in Lewes at the age of 94 on 15 March 2016. Presumably he slipped off peacefully, rather than dying as a result of someone chucking a firebomb into the building, like the five witnesses to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal who died in Brighton in 1992 did (see post ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’).

Asa Briggs had a terrible trauma whilst he was VC of Sussex. No he wasn’t arrested for being an accessory to serious organised crime, the trauma resulted from three Sussex students throwing red paint over a visiting US official, in a protest regarding the Vietnam War. Old Asa was so traumatised that decades later he banged on about these three students in a radio interview. Even better, after the old bastard was dead his daughter popped up on Radio 4 discussing the dreadful behaviour of the three Sussex students decades previously. She stated that Asa never got over it.

One of those students was from north Wales and when I heard about the red paint episode, I rather hoped that the man concerned would drench a few of those we know and love in north Wales with red paint. Sadly he never did, perhaps because he would have needed so many gallons of the stuff that he couldn’t lay his hands on enough of it. Before Briggs died, the wife of one of the students with whom Asa was so pissed off did not survive her encounter with the paedophiles’ friends of the Walton Centre at Liverpool. I didn’t know this when I was told about the red paint, but that student will have known about Dafydd and Gwynne and the paedophile gang. They never got the drenching in paint that they so richly deserved but they’ve got this blog instead. The child abusing murdering bastards.

Bottoms Up, We’ve All Become Millionaires!

Old Warwickians - 1940s-1960s School House Dinner

Readers might remember me mentioning in previous posts that in the mid-1980s, Thatcher’s henchman at the UGC, Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer, wanted to close down Bangor University, but he was reminded by UCNW that the place was full of people who were either assisting in supplying youngsters to the Westminster Paedophile Ring, or knew who was. Swinnerton-Dyer changed him mind quickly. Swinnerton-Dyer also went for Aston University, but the Thatcherite VC Sir Freddie Crawford did her bidding by closing down the Psychology Dept and transforming it into a Business School, where the paedophiles’ friends went to do business management qualifications for their future roles as public service managers (see post ‘The White Heat Of This Revolution’). Guess where else Swinnerton-Dyer aimed his axe? Salford. Salford was hit very badly, they had a 40% cut in their funding. They did survive – the VC who saw them through it was the VC who took over in 1981, when Salford was busy giving respectability to Cartrefle College which was run for the benefit of the paedophile gang of north Wales. I shall be blogging about that VC in a future post.

So Swinnerton-Dyer went after the three universities who were doing the most to facilitate Dafydd and the paedophiles – but he backed down and they survived…

There will be more background on other associates of Harold Wilson in future posts. Whilst digging around, I discovered a bit of info on Wilson’s mate Barbara Castle that I hadn’t known before. Barbara was the ‘fiery red-head’ (her hair was dyed) whom aspiring female Labour politicians all feel obliged to say that they admire or even consider as their ‘role model’. The Strong Woman Who Didn’t Take Any Crap, the Real Socialist etc. Barbara shagged her way around the Labour Party during the middle years of the 20th century, which is what people meant when they made reference to her ‘fiery red-hair’ and ‘passion’. I don’t mind that Barbara shagged her way around, but Barbara also concealed the abuse of kids and vulnerable people by the health and welfare services whilst boasting of her commitment to equality and women. What I didn’t realise was that Barbara and her husband were very keen to have children but experienced fertility problems. I watched an old clip of Barbara talking about the fertility treatment that she tried and she was stressing that it was, in her view, appalling and bizarre, involving her having injections of hormones extracted from mares’ urine. People are often very surprised at what is at the root of the Top Docs miracle cures. Not that it was a miracle cure, Barbara had enough and gave up. I know one thing though. Barbara, the True Socialist, who Hated Private Medicine and pissed off the Top Docs by Taking a Stand on private beds, would not have been able to get that treatment at that time on the NHS.

So which expensive Harley Street Top Doc treated Red Barbara then? I think we should be told.

One of many who told me how much she admired Barbara Castle and how sad it was that all those men stopped her becoming PM was Nicky Mitchell-Heggs, the occupational health physician at St George’s Hospital Medical School – who now runs a substantial private practice, as does her Top Doc husband. Mitchell-Heggs was one of those who was instrumental in forcing me out of my job at St George’s. After I obtained copies of my records, along with the full written admissions that Nicky and co knew that Dafydd was sexually exploiting patients and they believed that Tony Francis was as well, Nicky had written and CC’d a letter about me in which she stated that now that I had left my job, she would ‘be taking a back seat’. Which was interesting, because I thought that Nicky was a bourgeois idiot and I only saw her on about two occasions. So what sort of front seat was she taking before I left my job then?

So Nicky, who was it from St George’s who traced some relatives of mine that I had not given anyone any details of, impersonated Brown and told them that I’d tried to kill myself? Which was not only extraordinary but was untrue. Who ever did it was obviously quite skilled, because the people whom they spoke to knew Brown and sincerely believed that it was him. I know who can do things like that – the security services can. They can record, splice, etc. It certainly wasn’t Keith Harris and Orville. I know that Nicky knows something about it because there was a reference to it in the letter that she CC’d to everyone.

The problem with the coroners’ verdicts on so many of the victims of Dafydd et al who were found dead in north Wales was that some of those deaths were murders, but they were recorded as suicides because they were of mental health patients who were known to be distressed. Er – Springfield patient loses her job at St George’s, appears in court on serious charges on the basis of statements provided by Top Docs in north Wales, her friend rings up her relatives and tells them that she’s tried to kill herself. Was the scene being set for my dead body to be found Nicky?

Nicky Mitchell-Heggs originally trained as a psychiatrist. She became the occ health physician at St George’s allegedly because of ‘male prejudice’ towards her. Mitchell-Heggs was the occ health physician in an institution in which a great many staff were facilitating a pan-European paedophile ring and a Professor of Paediatrics had been imprisoned for his part in it. I don’t know why Mitchell-Heggs was in that job, but it won’t have been anything to do with sexism at work.

Michell-Heggs seemed to have a great deal of money for a working mother in an NHS job…

I heard earlier that the Home Secretary Sajid Javid has announced that the UK is to employ 2000 more security services agents. Tell you what Sajid, why not hire 2000 patients of Dafydd’s with a sense of humour, give them a bit of loose change and a phone box and get them to do what they did 20 yrs ago, when they rang him up and took the piss out of him. They presented more of a challenge to him and found out more about his crimes and who assisted them than the police force did and the security services were helping him anyway. Theresa should have popped around to my place when I worked at St George’s because I could have filled her in – she was a Councillor just down the road from St George’s…

There will be more posts soon naming more of the guilty…

A Major Coup – Or A Complete Disaster?

The Welsh Gov’ts most senior civil servant Dame Shan Morgan, the Permanent Secretary, was in the news yesterday. I had a look at her CV and also at the CV of Sir Derek Jones, the Permanent Secretary who preceded her. I didn’t see anything earth shatteringly incriminating on their CVs, it was all fairly standard Whitehall mandarin stuff. However I certainly had a shock when I took a look at the previous of the Permanent Secretary before Sir Derek – Dame Gillian Morgan, Permanent Secretary 2008-12.

So had Gillian done the rounds in Whitehall, in the European Commission or in the Diplomatic Service as is the norm for a mandarin? Not at all. Gillian Morgan was a Top Doctor! Neither was Morgan a medical graduate who early in her career decided to join the civil service – Morgan was a Top Doctor until the day before she was appointed the most senior civil servant in Wales.

The Welsh civil servants have no loyalty to Wales, they are appointed by Whitehall which is why it has always been said that the civil service serving Wales is actually doing the work of the Westminster Gov’ts, who are usually very hostile to Wales. It might also explain why so many senior civil servants who have ‘served’ Wales concealed the paedophile gang which decimated the nation. But Whitehall was certainly  aiming for the bulls-eye in terms of screwing Wales when it appointed Dr Gillian.

Gillian was appointed under Gordon Brown’s Gov’t in May 2008. That was during the dying days of the North West Wales NHS Trust. I was being harassed, threatened and arrested by Martin Jones, the CEO of the Trust and Elfed Roberts, the Chairman, like there was no tomorrow. Members of the public witnessing what was going on wrote to Elfed and Martin and made statements to my lawyer. There was never an investigation into Martin and Elfed’s conduct. Staff were walking away from the North West Wales NHS Trust in droves and Martin was relying on agency staff to run Ysbyty Gwynedd – who were not being subjected to CRB checks. Patients were dying, complaints were not being investigated and litigation costs were going through the roof.

Edwina Hart, the Welsh Gov’ts Health Minister, was doing her best to confront Martin, Elfed and the Top Doctors but they virtually spat in her face. In 2011 Edwina was removed from the post and paedophiles’ friend Lesley Griffiths, a member of the Mafia of Drips, replaced her (see post ‘History Repeats Itself, First As Tragedy, Second As Farce’).

I was told at the time that Edwina was being undermined by the Welsh civil service – could it possibly have been dear old Dame Top Doctor Gillian that this person was thinking of? Dame Gillian was sent to Wales to rescue someone the year after Edwina became Health Minister.

Immediately before Morgan was appointed to the most senior job in the Welsh civil service despite having no experience at all in the civil service, she was the Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation and had been since 2002. The NHS Confederation is the body which represents Health Trusts and Boards!

So somebody in Westminster saw fit to appoint someone who actually represented the North West Wales NHS Trust and it’s criminally negligent senior managers to run the Welsh civil service at a time when patients were being threatened, unlawfully refused treatment and were dying – and when the senior managers of that Trust were conducting a co-ordinated campaign to undermine and indeed remove the Health Minister.

Somebody needs to explain this.

Martin Jones will have known Gillian Morgan before she was given the job of Permanent Secretary. Not only will they have known each other from their mutual troughing at public expense at the NHS Confederation but they were both members of the Institute of Health Service Management -indeed old Gillian was President, 1997-98.

At the time that Morgan was Chief Exec of the NHS Confederation, their website also featured a Sue Slipman as Director of the Foundation Trust Network Service. I remember dear old Sue from her appearances on Question Time in the 1980s. Sue was one of Dr Death’s acolytes in the SDP and was the source of much entertainment because when she had been a leading light in the NUS she had been a Communist. Sue is a rather vacuous Lampeter graduate who had held a senior role in the National Council for One Parent Families and before that the NCCL, when the NCCL was busy advising paedophiles on their rights. Sue later found herself Chairing an NHS Trust but all references to which one exactly disappeared from the internet after those embarrassing revelations about the NCCL cosying up to PIE hit the media a few years ago.

Gillian’s biography mentions that she has worked as a doctor in ‘hospitals, GP practices and public health medicine’, has ‘served on a large number of national committees and working groups’ and is a member of the NHS Stakeholders Forum. She is a past President of the International Hospital Federation. Dame Abuse and Corruption is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners. So she’ll know Dr D.G.E. Wood, the corrupt GP who concealed the paedophile gang in north Wales and assisted the mental health services in their criminal activities, who has held high office in the Royal College for many years.

It is noticeable that where information about the work of Dame Abuse and Corruption is concerned, there is an absence of a timeline – we are told that she was a Consultant and then Director of Public Health in Leicestershire, but we are not told when. However, it is admitted that at the turn of the millennium the Dame was Chief Exec of the North and East Devon Health Authority, based in Exeter. That has been a very troubled region with regard to the NHS for a very long time and one Chief Executive narrowly avoided being imprisoned (see post ‘NHS Chief Executive Collapses In Court After Being Spared Jail’). There have been problems in the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, including the hounding and eventual exclusion of Professor Edzard Ernst, because he had the temerity to produce research which demonstrated that some of the alternative therapies that the Medical School wished to promote were clinically ineffective. One of the people demanding Edzard’s head on a plate was a close friend of Prince Charles. Exeter Medical School is also fully on board with the research fraud that is MBCT (mindfulness based cognitive therapy), perpetrated by Professor Mark Williams (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’).

It can therefore be assumed that Gillian was Director of Public Health for Leicestershire sometime before 2000 and presumably a Consultant in public health for Leicestershire before she was Director.

That places Gillian in Leicestershire in the 1980s/90s – when there was a massive cover-up on the part of the NHS, social services and local authority of the paedophile ring that operated in the region, two members of which were Frank Beck and Greville Janner. In 1987 Dr James Earp, the leading forensic psychiatrist in Leicester, concealed the wrongdoing of the mental health services in north Wales (see post ‘An Expert From England’).

I cannot imagine that your average Top Doctor would decide to apply for the post of the head of the Welsh civil service if they saw the advert in the Job Centre. So who told this toxic cow that the post of Permanent Secretary in Wales was about to become vacant and suggested that she apply for it? This was a highly irregular appointment and I imagine that a few eyebrows were raised when it was made.

One person who was delighted with Dame Abuse and Corruption’s appointment was Rhodri Morgan, Wales’s First Minister who was hated by Martin Jones and no doubt hated him in return – but Rhodri had a massive problem in the NHS in north Wales, was as thick as pig shit himself and desperately needed to conceal the criminality and the deaths. Furthermore Rhodri’s wife Julie Morgan is a former social worker who had been Deputy Director of Barnardo’s, which was one of the organisations to which some of the paedophiles of north Wales had links.

Rhodri stated that Dame Abuse and Corruption’s appointment was ‘a major coup for Wales’ – and then no doubt went off to sink a few pints and stick his head in the sand, thus exposing his thinking parts as George Carman would say.

We were told that Dame Abuse and Corruption would use one of Wales’s most powerful jobs to ‘deliver better public services’. So that’s why the Health Board in north Wales is now in special measures after a huge mental health patient abuse scandal and is effectively bankrupt – the old Dame certainly delivered on that one. The rest of the NHS in Wales and the social services are pretty crap as well…

Entertainingly I have found a copy of a letter that the Dame wrote to Sir Michael Scholar – someone else who knew much about the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal but kept it under his hat (see post ‘So Who Was It Exactly Who Appointed The Corrupt Old Bastard?’) – in 2009 regarding the Welsh Assembly Gov’ts Strategic Plan to address violence to women and domestic abuse. Two days ago the leading story on BBC News Wales online was the serious problem of domestic violence in Wales. A few days before that it was reported that the lawyer who prosecuted the trafficking gang in Rotherham had been retained by the Welsh Gov’t to make Wales the safest country in Europe for women. Somebody obviously thinks that Wales needs him after one particular woman going under the name of Gillian Morgan was imported into Wales to assist a bunch of paedophiles’ friends.

So who could possibly have thought that it would be a good idea to send Gillian of the Leicestershire Paedophiles to help out the Welsh civil service when the wrongdoing of Martin and the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales had become so high profile that it was being openly discussed by the general public?

Someone whispered the word ‘Cherie’ in my ear earlier. It was Cherie’s mate Michael Beloff QC who advised Clwyd County Council’s insurers to redact, withhold and then pulp the Jillings Report into child abuse in north Wales because what had happened was completely indefensible (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake’). Cherie was of course mates with many of the Councillors in the London authorities who sent children in their care into the arms of a vicious paedophile gang in north Wales – she was also mates with the ‘radical’ lawyers who ignored what was going on. Cherie and Tony were both colleagues of George Carman who was one of the most corrupt barristers in the UK and who certainly knew about organised child abuse (see posts ‘No Ordinary Methods’ and ‘No Ordinary Methods -Supplementary Post’).

Cherie – when you became a QC you were smug enough to tell a journo that being a QC was ‘pretty smart’. Witnesses to the North Wales paedophile gang were murdered Cherie – they were poisoned, they were strung up, they were killed when cars drove into them at high speed and five of them were killed by a petrol bomb. You are not pretty smart, you are a weak pathetic woman who needed a friend like Carol Caplin, who believed in silly New Age therapies and who threw hissy fits because you felt threatened by Anji Hunter. You are also a greedy bitch who is married to a war criminal. I’ll look out for you both in the media coverage of Tessa’s funeral – who will die because the whole bloody lot of you failed to stop the rampant corruption and research fraud in the UK medical establishment, substantially because the Top Doctors were concealing the organised paedophile rings which infiltrated the whole of the UK child care system in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I hope that those free holidays at Berlusconi’s place were worth it you fucking idiots. That’s the Berlusconi who is alleged to have Mafia connections. Serious organised crime is a running theme with the Blairs and their friends isn’t it.

Hey there Smart One how does it feel to be outed on the internet by a Service User when I’m supposed to have green teeth, weigh twenty stone and be sitting in a group run by a paedophile’s friend telling me that I’m now empowered?

Cherie and Tony’s mate Alastair Campbell was the man who constructed the cock and bull story about Ron Davies’s moment of madness on Clapham Common when he’d been caught with a male prostitute called Boogie – days after Blair had told old Ron that he would be the next First Minister of Wales.

What does Blair think that Wales has done to him??? Is all this his revenge because Prestatyn produced John Prescott or something?

If the Dame’s arrival in Wales was mystifying, so was her departure. She retired in Aug 2013 on ‘voluntary exit terms’ with a pay off of approx 190k. In retirement Dame Serious Organised Crime gave a media interview in which she explained that throughout her life she had suffered from anasphasia,  an inability to picture in her mind people’s faces. Presumably she also had an inability to picture kids being battered, raped, kept in a cellar at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and then burnt to a crisp in arson attacks when they were young adults.

At the same time as questions were asked about Dame Serious Organised Crime’s gratuitous pay off, there were also questions asked of another Welsh Gov’t civil servant, Bernard Galton. Galton had been the DG for People, Places and Corporate Services and was still receiving his generous salary, despite having stepped down from that role and was due to receive an exit package. Galton explained that he was now doing the job of DG, Workforce and Organisational Development for NHS Wales. This was in 2014 – when there was a massive problem with recruitment to the Wales NHS.

Galton had a sideline as well – in June 2014 he was appointed as a non-executive director for the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases NHS Foundation Trust in Bath. Galton lives in Bath. Well he wasn’t going to slum it in Wales was he. The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases described itself as having an ‘excellent reputation for research both nationally and internationally’ and offers ‘musculo-skeletal conditions chronic pain management’ and also ‘chronic fatigue syndrome/ME fatigue management’.

For the 35 years that Iived in north Wales I found it impossible to get treatment for a musculo-skeletal problem which frequently left me in agony. I knew other people refused treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome/ME.

This is presumably why Galton lived in Bath.

After Galton retired from the civil service which blocked all attempts to improve the public services in Wale, he became a non-executive director of the Oxford Health Foundation NHS Trust. Professors Mark Williams and Tom Burns work in the mental health services in Oxford – both of them concealed the criminal activity in the north Wales NHS which was associated with the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal.

In Feb 2016 the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments – the organisation which waves through lucrative directorship for politicians and civil servants who have recently left office – gave their approval for Galton to take on a part time role as a non-executive director in a company to pursue ‘a joint venture between three Welsh local authorities and Capita Property and Infrastructure. Galton had already accepted the post when he condescended to request the permission of the Advisory Committee – this was of course in breach of the rules but the Advisory Committee let him off this time.

The Advisory Committee also approved a role for Galton as a Strategic Consultant at Green Park Ltd. The Advisory Committee noted that Galton had dealings with Green Park Ltd whilst he had worked in the Welsh Gov’t – Green Park Ltd had landed a 1.25 million contract from the Welsh Gov’t. Furthermore Galton had sat on the decision making panel throughout the tendering exercise. The HR Senior Civil Service team had awarded the contract to Green Park Ltd – Bernard Galton was their line manager. The Advisory Committee let him off again. Bernard is also a Strategic Advisor at Sapienti Consulting – that was OK with the Advisory Committee too.

The Chairman of the NHS Confederation for the last year in which Dame Serious Organised Crime was Chief Exec of that organisation was Professor Bryan Stoten. Stoten was Chair of UKPHR (UK Public Health Regulation), the body which regulates the ‘specialist public health workforce’ who are not regulated by the GMC ie. who are not medically qualified. Which might include Dame Gangster – I had assumed that she was medically qualified but I note that is not actually clarified.

Stoten is a big name in the NHS in the Midlands. In 2001 he was appointed Chair of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and in 2006 he became Chair of Warwickshire PCT. Stoten has also been Chair of Birmingham Health Authority and Coventry Health Authority. So he knows Professor Robert Bluglass (from Birmingham) and Dr Colin Berry (from Coventry) who concealed the criminal activities of Dafydd and the paedophiles (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’).

Stoten lectured at Birmingham University’s Health Services Management Centre, 1972-77. He was featured on their website reminiscing over his happy days there, but observed that it was ‘a pity after 40 years to see the management of the NHS in such disarray’. Well Bryan it was you who trained the collection of mindless greedy crooks and spivs who very obviously did not know how to manage anything, although they were taught how to intimidate patients who had been harmed, how to deflect complaint, how to cook the books and fiddle the stats and how to get rid of whistleblowers.

Bryan’s colleague Elisabeth Buggins was Chair of the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority whilst it was responsible for supervising Mid Staffs NHS Foundation Trust when an estimated 1000 people died unnecessarily there (more sober voices have suggested that many more died, although because the NHS lies about everything only the deaths of 1000 were estimated). At least 1000 deaths and patients drinking water out of vases and told to crap in their beds by Angels because they couldn’t be bothered to walk across a ward with a bedpan? No problem. Buggins was awarded a CBE in the 2008 New Years honours and in 2011 was appointed Chair of Birmingham Women’s Hospital. In 2016 Buggins resigned after it was revealed that Birmingham Women’s Hospital had a 3.4 million deficit.

Buggins Chaired the UK Organ Donation Taskforce, 2006-09. She is or was Chair of the Eastern Academic Health Sciences Network as well as of the Walsall Refugee and Asylum Seekers Support Association. She is or was Deputy Chair of Accord Housing Group and team leader of the Big Feed, as well as an Independent Reviewer for DeepMind Health. Buggins has also taught on the Patient Public Involvement module at Warwick University. She maintains that she has worked with the voluntary sector on local, national and European projects.

Buggins is or was Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands.

The Chief Exec of the neighbouring Birmingham Children’s Hospital whilst the Birmingham Women’s Hospital ran up gambling debts under Buggins’s Chairmanship was Sarah-Jane Marsh. Sarah-Jane appeared in the press looking very pleased with herself and explained that discussions were underway regarding the merger of Birmingham Women’s Hospital with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and regarding the appointment of Dame Christine Braddock, the Chair of the latter, to Chair the new merged organisation.

Braddock had not long before resigned as Principal and Chief Exec of Birmingham Metropolitan College after she was rash enough to ban the wearing of Muslim veils at the College and was faced with  9000 signature petition, the threat of a mass demo and a very big political row. In the same year Braddock was made a Dame for her services to FE. In the wake of the row over the veils Braddock stated that she was approaching 60 and had always planned to retire.

So it was good to know that Braddock suddenly found enough life left in her to become the Chairman of a major hospital as well as High Sheriff of the West Midlands and then Deputy Lieutenant.

Braddock had previous – she had been a past President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and also ran the prison education service in the Midlands for the Home Office.

For many years there has been a major problem with corruption in many areas of civic life in Birmingham.

To return to Sarah-Jane Marsh. In Feb 2014 it was reported that Sarah-Jane, in her capacity as Chief Exec of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, had overpaid staff by more than one million – and that most of the overpayments had not been recovered.

Sarah-Jane was appointed as Chief Exec in 2009 at the age of 32. She was one of the youngest NHS Chief Execs in the UK and concerns were expressed by some that she did not have the experience for the position. In 2007 before Marsh became Chief Exec but was Chief Operating Officer at Birmingham Children’s Hospital – responsible for the day to day management of the hospital – the hospital was criticised by the Healthcare Commission for a lack of beds resulting from bad planning.

Marsh began her NHS career as an NHS graduate trainee. One of her first jobs was as an assistant to Sir David Nicholson for six months, in 2002. David Nicholson – later the Chief Exec of NHS England – was named by the Daily Mail as the most hated man in Britain a few years ago, in the furore when the nation finally woke up to what had happened at Mid Staffs and how whistleblowers had been intimidated and hounded out, how there was a culture of dreadful misconduct and bullying within the NHS and how everyone responsible for the disaster at Mid Staffs had been promoted to even more senior roles often after having ‘retired’ with huge golden good-byes. Many of those involved were occupying the most senior roles in the UK NHS and Nicholson epitomised all that was wrong.

At the time that Marsh worked for Nicholson, he was Director of Health and Social Care for the Midlands and the East of England. He gave Marsh a reference in 2003 when she landed the job as Director of Planning and Development for Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust. Nicholson also gave Marsh a reference when she bagged the job as Chief Operating Officer at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

In 2009 Marsh announced that she and Nicholson were getting married! Nicholson hastily reassured everyone that of course they had not been having any sort of affair when he wrote Marsh those references, but as Nicholson had lied for years about hundreds of people dying at the hands of the NHS, no-one was very convinced.

Sarah-Jane was recently appointed to lead NHS England’s maternity services transformation plan, after the revelations that women and babies have been suffering serious harm and have sometimes died in the hospitals in which TV companies film sentimental documentaries about our wonderful NHS. I’ll await the next maternity scandal – now the NHS has implemented a transformation plan it can only be just around the corner and will no doubt be even bigger and better than the one in Cumbria.

When I read the gory details of the everyday story of Mid Staffs folk when the world was after the blood of David Nicholson, I was struck by how very similar the practices of Nicholson et al were to those of Martin Jones and his mates in the North West Wales NHS Trust. I discussed with my friend Brown the possibility that Martin might have personally worked with Nicholson and learnt at his knee. Brown was sceptical and observed that from what he had seen Nicholson was the model of NHS practice anyway.

However, when we had that discussion, I didn’t realise that Nicholson and co had grown their power base from their earlier careers in the West Midlands. Martin Jones began his career as a twat in an office in Ysbyty Gwynedd and then disappeared for a short while – as  an NHS manager in Birmingham and Coventry. Martin also passed through the hands of Aston  University Business School at some point. Martin then returned to north Wales, terrorised everyone and presided over a lethal NHS Trust which exterminated vulnerable people.

When Gillian Morgan was appointed Permanent Secretary, Martin and his friends started telling people that he was going to be the next Chief Exec of NHS Wales.

Readers who follow the comments on this blog will know that Martin’s mug has disappeared from the Betsi website and that he is now Director of NHS Wales External Investigations. The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board of which Martin has been a senior executive since its formation nearly 10 years ago is currently in special measures and under investigation after a huge scandal involving the abuse of mental health patients. The problem was substantially caused by Martin Jones.

Martin will now be charged with investigating the Betsi. I urge readers not to presume that Martin will do the decent thing, declare a conflict of interest and step aside. He won’t. Furthermore, Martin’s appointment as Director of External Investigations NHS Wales will not be a coincidence. This is how the NHS works – for decades it has operated on the principle of promoting the people who have caused the problems on the basis that they will then be highly motivated and most effective at concealing the root of the problem and will either remain in denial or find a scapegoat.

Martin had already been appointed as one of the investigators into the Tawel Fan Scandal last year. Tawel Fan arose as a result of callous, untrained staff who should never have been employed routinely abusing patients (see post ‘The Tawel Fan Scandal’). The nurse who blew the whistle was suspended, arrested and received death threats. She now works elsewhere. The staff who abused the patients in Tawel Fan were not disciplined and were transferred to another mental health unit – where some months later some of them were caught abusing patients all over again (see post ‘Update On Bryn Hesketh Investigation’). They also refused to take part in a real external investigation into their conduct.

Martin Jones was Director of the Workforce for the Betsi throughout all of this.

Martin tried to punch me on one occasion. He had by then harassed me, threatened me and had me repeatedly arrested as the wider NHS looked on and did nothing. One day I was walking down a deserted corridor in the old main building of Bangor University when Martin saw me and steamed towards me at a high speed with his fist raised, but just before he belted me my friend jumped out from behind a pillar – because we knew that Martin was visiting the University that day I’d asked my friends to ensure that they didn’t lose sight of me at any point – and greeted Martin. He swerved and veered off in the opposite direction.

Thank goodness that some junior academics are braver than virtually all NHS staff and Gov’t Ministers.

Somebody had such confidence in the abilities of Dame Organised Crime to destroy Wales that she was also appointed as one of the three members of the Review set up by Jeremy Beecham in 2006 to advise the Welsh Assembly Gov’t on the reform of public services in Wales.

Jeremy Beecham was the Labour leader of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne City Council, 1977-94. He had been a Councillor in Newcastle since 1967. So Beecham was a Councillor in Newcastle throughout the years of serious corruption in the north east which was cultivated by and blossomed under T. Dan Smith, who was the Labour leader of Newcastle City Council, 1960-65 (see post ‘Another Episode Of Friends’).

Beecham went to the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and then to University College Oxford. After graduation he worked as a solicitor. He joined the Labour Party in 1959 and Chaired the Social Services Committee, 1973-77. So Beecham Chaired that Committee whilst Brian Roycroft the Director of Social Services for Newcastle sent kids in care on placements to the Bryn Alyn Community in north Wales – which was owned and managed by paedophile John Allen who was not only abusing and trafficking the kids but who also ran a child porn and drugs business (see post ‘Another Episode Of Friends’). Newcastle Social Services continued to send children to Bryn Alyn after complaints of abuse had been made and Roycroft also recommended Bryn Alyn to other Directors of Social Services in the north east.

Beecham has been a Council member of Common Purpose since 1989, a weird network that is well represented among people abusing their positions which is reputed to be connected to New Labour.

Beecham was a member of the Labour Party NEC from 1998 and Chaired the NEC, 2005-06.

In 1991 Beecham was appointed Chairman of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (AMA). Many of those from the London boroughs who later became Blair’s acolytes when he was PM held office in the AMA.

In 1997 the AMA merged with the Association of District Councils and the Association of County Councils to form the LGA (Local Gov’t Authority). Who was the first Chair of the LGA, 1997-04? Jeremy Beecham of course.

In 2006 Jeremy doubled up as the LGA Vice-Chair and Chair of the LGA Labour Group. Jeremy is described as having been a member of many Boards and Committees in Newcastle and the north east. So Beecham will know the network of those who worked in the mental health services in Newcastle and who then joined Dafydd and the paedophiles in north Wales (see post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection’), he will also have known the dreadful Top Doctor Lord John Walton who provided a substantial umbrella for the criminals of north Wales (see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’) and he will have known those involved in the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal who provided a most useful distraction  away from Dafydd and the paedophiles of north Wales whilst Alison Taylor, Mary Wynch and I were raising the alarm (see post ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas And The Culprits Were Named’). Beecham will have known about the serious abuse of children in care in Sunderland (see post ‘Another Episode Of Friends’) and he will have known about Matt Arnold and Peter Howarth abusing kids at Axwell Park Approved School until 1973, when they both relocated to Bryn Esytn and joined – and then greatly expanded – the paedophile gang that was operating there.

Beecham enjoyed a number of Gov’t advisory roles and in 2010 was given a peerage.

I have long been aware of the AMA and the LGA but knew very little about them, having spent most of my adult life in Wales. I was however very au fait with the WLGA – the Welsh Local Government Association. The signature of one of their senior representatives appears on every report and review which tells us how the NHS or social services in Wales is now the envy of the UK, or will be now that this Report/Review has been published or will be after the New Strategy has been implemented – the New Strategy which has been written by the bozos who wrote the last Strategy which didn’t work and resulted in scandal (see post ‘The Reality Is, There Is No Problem’). The other function of the WLGA is to explain that the Gov’t hasn’t given them enough money and that’s why the public services are still shite. This statement appears on a regular basis in the Welsh media and punctuates the news reports re Councillors and Council officers stealing the funds or fiddling their expenses.

As with senior positions in the public services, life in the WLGA is one big round of pass the parcel. Or indeed pass the Local Gov’t crook.

The Principal Leader of the WLGA, 2008-12 was John Davies, who was leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, 2004-12.

I have seen references to a John Davies from Carmarthenshire County Council, but I’m not sure if it is the same John Davies. Carmarthenshire is another Welsh Council riding high in the public dissatisfaction stakes. Meryl Gravell, a leading light in the Council  frequently stars on the Welsh political blog Jac O The North and has a track record of insulting both her own staff and the people of Carmarthenshire. There seems to be a lot of citizen blogging in Carmarthenshire  – one blogger was taken to the High Court in an attempt to silence her. Another blog is written by Sian Caiach, a surgeon who some years ago found herself dismissed and struck off by the GMC after she reported two fellow Top Doctors for defrauding the NHS – her allegations were substantiated but one of the guilty Top Doctors was promoted nonetheless. Sian was the only person who lost her job.

John Davies was an S4C presenter in the early years of the channel and was or is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society. He spent nine years sitting on the Electricity Consumer Council and subsequently was a member of Energywatch Wales. Davies is or was a member of the Dyfed-Powys Police Authority and Chaired their Finance Committee for nine years. Davies picked up the award for the ITV Wales local politician of the year in Dec 2008.

In April 2014 John Davies was reappointed to the Board of S4C for another four year term. The appointment was made by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under the Coalition Con Dems Gov’t, Maria Miller.

In Feb 2014 the Western Telegraph revealed that John Davies had been Council leader when unlawful payments had been made to senior Council officers – Bryn Parry-Jones the Chief Exec and another senior officer received over 50k in unlawful payments.

The Wales Audit Office – the head of which is Huw Vaughan Thomas who was the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council whilst the paedophile gang made merry in the Council’s children’s homes (see post ‘I Know Nuzzing…’) – said that the payments were contrary to the law and Dyfed-Powys Police were investigating.

Bryn certainly did well whilst he served the citizens of Pembrokeshire. Not only was he the highest paid Council executive in Wales for 18 years from 1996 onwards – reigning over the agricultural land and scenic coast of Pembrokeshire which includes the throbbing metropolis of St Davids with its Cathedral, Abbey and little art galleries and bijou shops is a dangerous and stressful job after all – but Bryn was also given a Council funded Porsche, which other members of his family had the use of as well as him. Bryn left his job in 2014 – and received a severance deal of 330k.

A paedophile gang operated in Pembrokeshire and there was an unrelated scandal related to the ill treatment of children in the care of the Council as well (see post ‘The Reality Is, There Is No Problem’).

Very expensive cars driven by Council leaders or senior Council officers were not unknown in north Wales either. There was a north Walesesque spat some years ago when someone with a sense of humour photographed Dafydd Iwan’s car parked in a disabled bay. The said car was no Reliant Robin. Not long after this, I became friendly with someone who although on a limited income drove quite a swish car – an Audi – and for some reason wouldn’t flog it to raise money. They eventually fessed up that the car belonged to Gwynedd County Council and that when they had worked for Gwynedd they had leased the car for the grand sum of one pound per week and had been allowed to continue this arrangement even after they left the Council’s employment. They didn’t have a senior job with Gwynedd either, they were a minion.

On another occasion someone pointed out a top of the range Mercedes Sports car in the car park of Bangor University and told me that it belonged to the man responsible for running Anglesey Social Services and commented that considering the state of the social services on Anglesey it was outrageous that the person running that dysfunctional shoddy outfit was driving something like that. The driver of the said car had actually turned up to the University to try to intimidate the long suffering Professor of Sociology who had been defending the social work students after they had complained of being viciously bullied whilst on placement with Anglesey Social Services. Two days later a friend rang who was rolling around laughing as they explained that the owner of the Mercedes Sports had been caught by the police having sex with someone other than his wife in the car whilst parked in a public place. The officer concerned knew immediately who he was dealing with because it was about the only such car in Llangefni. Everybody waited with baited breath for the prosecution and coverage in the Daily Post – but no, it never happened.

Dyfed-Powys Police also eventually decided not to prosecute in the case of Pembrokeshire County Council and Bryn Parry-Jones.

I read a news report this morning about a severely disabled man in Wales who is concerned that he will lose his independence because of a change in the way that his care is funded. His care is currently funded by the Independent Living Fund but soon the funds will be given to local Councils for them to purchase packages of care for clients. I am sure that the disabled man has good grounds to worry, priority will be given to a Porsche for the Chief Executive to go dogging in every time.

The present leader of the WLGA is Debbie Wilcox, the leader of Newport City Council. Debbie was appointed leader of the WLGA in June 2017 and Mark Drakeford, the Local Gov’t Secretary, was delighted to congratulate her on her appointment. That’s the Drakeford who worked as a social worker for Dyfed when the kids in care in Dyfed were being abused, the Drakeford who was a social worker and Councillor in south Wales when kids in care in south Wales were being abused, the Drakeford who was special advisor to Rhodri Morgan when the oaf Rhodri ignored complaints about serious criminality in the NHS and social services in north Wales and appointed paedophiles’ friends to senior positions. Then Drakeford the paedophiles’ friend became Health Minister himself and ignored warnings about criminality and research fraud in the NHS in north Wales. And then Tawel Fan exploded in the face of the big jelly.

Drakeford stated that he was looking forward to fresh ideas from the wimmin who are now leading some of Wales’s councils. I don’t know Debbie Wilcox but if she or indeed any other wimmin show any signs at all of having any fresh ideas, Drakeford and the paedophiles’ friends will soon manouvre them out.

BBC News Wales recently carried a report explaining that the Welsh Labour Party will soon be selecting their Deputy Leader and because Carwyn is in posession of testicles, a female Deputy has to be appointed. (When is someone going to speak up for intersex people or hermaphrodites? Feminism is tearing itself apart over the issue of transgender people, but intersex people have been with us since mankind first evolved and have endured great injustices and even harm from the good old Top Doctors, who until recently frequently sliced their genitalia off at birth and ordered their parents never to tell anyone that their baby was Not As Others.) The three shortlisted candidates are Julie Morgan, Debbie Wilcox and Carolyn Harris.

Julie Morgan was married to the pillock Rhodri and like Rhodri has spent a lifetime ignoring serious wrongdoing. Remember – Julie was a social worker in Barry and Deputy Director of Barnardo’s, which hosted paedophiles and then remained silent about it. All I know about Carolyn Harris is that she provides a source of entertainment for the writer and readers of the blog Jac O The North.

One of Welsh Labour’s wimmin in the Senedd, Julie James, is today featured on BBC News Wales giving her backing to a campaign launched by the Welsh Gov’t to break gender stereotypes. I’m not too keen on gender stereotyping myself but Julie James is quoted as saying that gender stereotyping is a result of and leads to domestic abuse and violence against women. Actually Julie it isn’t and it doesn’t. Throughout my life I have known men who have held very traditional attitudes to gender roles and they would never have used violence towards anyone yet alone a woman. I have known other men with impeccably liberal credentials who have actually been highly abusive towards women.

Julie – I know one man who flaunts his feminist and socialist credentials but who has spent decades ignoring the abuse of women and children, some of it very serious abuse. He’s called Mark Drakeford and I think that you know him well. Another such man was Rhodri Morgan, who is no longer with us but his wife with feminist principles who takes a firm line on domestic violence and child abuse still is.

As part of the campaign the Welsh Gov’t are planning adverts featuring people in gender non-traditional roles, including a male midwife.

There was a male midwife who used to work at Ysbyty Gwynedd – he lived in the same village as me, Waunfawr. He had graduated with a First from Bangor University and the patients loved him. He killed himself, leaving a note behind saying that he could longer cope with what was happening at Ysbyty Gwynedd and things were going on there which were so bad that no-one would ever believe it. His last wish was that no-one from the hospital should attend his funeral. Martin Jones was Chief Exec at the time. The Daily Post did not print a word about this young man’s death.

A number of other staff at Ysbyty Gwynedd killed themselves whilst Martin was running the hospital, including a nurse who left behind a suicide note naming the Director of HR as someone who had been bullying her and a psychiatrist who stabbed himself to death through the heart upstairs at home whilst his young family had breakfast downstairs. The psychiatrist who killed himself had believed that he had cancer and had been going to Europe for medical advice. So he didn’t feel comfortable consulting his colleagues or anyone who knew them then.

After this psychiatrist’s suicide, Kenny Midence, a clinical psychologist with the north Wales mental health services, told a concerned third party that the doctor in question was neurotic and that it wasn’t a real suicide. What was it then Midence, a murder?

Suicidal people are referred to Kenny Midence by the Betsi.

Perhaps NHS Wales External Investigations should carry out an inquiry into these staff suicides at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Back to Debbie Wilcox. As the leader of the WLGA perhaps she could tell everybody exactly what has been going on in Caerphilly Council – there has been a long running dispute concerning allegations of serious misconduct on the part of a small number of people but involving large sums of money which seems to be unresolvable and which has consumed millions of pounds of public money.

Ron Davies – who would have become Wales’s First Minister had he not had a moment of madness on Clapham Common with a male prostitute called Boogie and who was then photographed looking for badgers in a well known gay cruising spot – is a Councillor in Caerphilly. So why has such wrongdoing been tolerated in a Council which boasts Ron Davies as a member?

I and correspondents to this blog have been entertained by the co-ordinated campaign being run by the Top Doctors recently. We were subjected to #NHSLove and now we have #PublicDuty. Anyone reading this blog will have gained an idea of just how much duty the Top Docs feel that they have towards the public. It seems that the Daily Mail recently published an article about a group of Top Docs from St George’s Hospital Medical School going on a jolly to France and there has been a Twitter storm of fuming Top Docs berating the Daily Mail. Many tweets begin with the words ‘as a consultant with 20 yrs experience’ – consultants with 20 yrs experience were working in the NHS when Top Doctors at St George’s facilitated a paedophile ring and people trafficking, also had a line in drug dealing and distribution and perpetrated a major research fraud. I witnessed it all Top Docs!

The Top Docs are being very rude about Daily Mail readers. Be warned Top Docs – Daily Mail readers vote and the Mail has more readers than your self indulgent tweets. The Top Docs need to remember what happened to the NUT in the mid 80s when they went on strike. They placed big adverts in all the newspapers featuring a fictional geography teacher called Jim who was going on strike because although he was ‘an honours graduate’ with years of teaching experience he ‘only’ earned 40k pa. Half the nation was on the dole, Wales had been decimated and there was a furious backlash against the NUT – an angry Mail reader wrote to the NUT and told them that Jim should consider himself lucky that he had a job. The Guardian published comments about the ‘wallies’ who read the Mail. Even more people became angry, the NUT lost the argument and unfortunately Thatcher won the next election. Like Jim, at the time I too was an honours graduate – I was on the dole being threatened and harassed by Top Doctors! And now I’m in hiding with 10,000 documents.

Lastly, the leading story on BBC New Wales online is a report about the extraordinarily high death rate among patients admitted to A&E at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. They’re certainly dropping like flies there – the death rate is 30.4 per 10,000 (for the year to Oct 2017) as opposed to the Welsh average of 19.4 per 10,000. Could this because of years of corruption and mismanagement and negligent callous senior staff? Not at all. According to the Betsi, it is a consequence of the high number of elderly people living in the area. Which was as I remember the reason that Harold Shipman gave for all those old dears pegging out in his surgery.

The only politician to speak out about these terrifying figures so far has been the Tory AM Darren Millar. I await the twitter mob to demand the lynching of Darren.

Surely another case for the Director of NHS Wales External Investigations – who until two months ago ran Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

#PublicDuty!

The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III

I’m kicking off this third post in the Tony Blair series with yet another person who was PPS to Blair, a man who was appointed PPS to Blair just as David Hanson (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part II) moved upward and onward. I am talking about Keith Hill, who was PPS to Blair from 2005 until Blair resigned in 2007.

Keith Hill was the Labour MP for Streatham, 1992-2010. So he was another one who was selected as a candidate before Blair got his hands on the controls of the Labour Party machine. In fact Hill was the Labour candidate for Blaby (Nigel Lawson’s constituency in Leicestershire) in 1979, so Hill had been around for a very long time.

Keith Hill was born and went to school in Leicester. He then went to Oxford – and after graduating completed a Diploma in Education at that hive of activity of the paedophiles’ friends whose stronghold was/is in Wales, Aberystwyth University. Hill then lectured at Leicester University and at Strathclyde University, 1969-73.

The fact that Keith Hill both taught at Leicester University and some ten years later stood for Blaby suggests that he retained links to his place of origin. Could Keith Hill have been someone else who knew about the activities of Greville Janner and his friend Frank Beck with children in care and that Leicester City Council, the Social Services and people in Leicester University were concealing child abuse?

Hill worked as a research officer for the Labour Party’s International Dept, 1974-76 and was then the political officer with the NUR (National Union of Railwaymen), which subsequently amalgamated with the NUS (National Union of Seamen) – with which John Prescott had a long association – to form the RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) in 1990. The RMT became a very powerful union – it is a big supporter of Jeremy Corbyn – thanks to the efforts of Bob Crow, it’s General Secretary, 2002-14. Crow was loathed by many for claiming to speak for the working class whilst he drew a salary of approx. £150k pa, dined in Mayfair restaurants and went on luxury cruises. However many of those who loathed Crow were dreadful themselves and certainly didn’t live modestly – Crow’s critics included Blair, Priti Patel, Max Hastings and Richard Littlejohn. In 1997 Bob Crow briefly joined the Socialist Labour Party, which was established by his mate Arthur Scargill. Michael Mansfield – who studiously ignored anything to do with the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, as well as other child abuse cases and worked with a number of people who had colluded with child abuse (see post ‘Workers’ Play Time’) – was also a mate of Scargills and co-founded the Socialist Labour Party. I saw Arthur Scargill speak at Bangor University about six years ago – the person who seemed to have arranged his visit to Bangor was a paedophiles’ friend (see post ‘It’s All About Protecting Children’).

In 1992 Keith Hill took the seat of Streatham from the sitting Conservative MP Sir William Shelton, who had occupied the seat since 1974. Prior to that, Shelton had been the Tory MP for Clapham.

William Shelton had been one of the key people who ensured that Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. Airey Neave managed Thatcher’s campaign, with Shelton as his second in command. Shelton was responsible for mobilising the right wing of the Party behind Thatcher and also sent out misinformation to the media in order to manipulate the campaign outcome. Shelton would have been good at that – before entering politics he had pursued a career in advertising and he remained in that business whilst he was an MP. He was the MD for Grosvenor Advertising in 1969, the Chairman of Washer, Fox, Coughlin and in 1983 set up Shelton Consultants. He was appointed a Director of Saracen Consultants in 1987. Shelton undertook a lot of international work and at times had been based in Colombia and Venezuela.

Shelton was politically active in south London for years. In 1964 he was President of Wandsworth Young Conservatives; he sat on the GLC representing Wandsworth in 1967; in 1968 he was Chief Whip for the Conservative majority on ILEA. Whilst he was MP for Streatham, he clashed with the leadership of Lambeth Borough Council whilst the Council was under the control of Ted Knight. That will have been when Peter Mandelson was a member of the Council, along with Paul Boateng, Linda Bellos and many other friends of this blog. Whilst Lambeth Council’s children’s homes were rife with paedophiles and when the Council were sending some of the kids in its care to north Wales – where they were abused by paedophiles. I can’t find any references to Shelton speaking out about that though – or about the abuse of children in Wandsworth or about the corruption and malpractice at St George’s Hospital Medical School which from 1980 onwards was located just down the road and covered the population of Streatham. The wrongdoing that I witnessed and experienced at St George’s and the associated mental health unit Springfield Hospital took place between 1989-91, whilst Shelton was MP. As did the bizarre behaviour of the corrupt detectives in Streatham Police Station in 1990/91 when the mental health services in north Wales perjured themselves and demanded that I be arrested (see post ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London’) – detectives which included a man who boasted about having worked for the North Wales Police and whilst he was stationed there had, with his mates in the police, beaten up and framed local young men from Bethesda and thrown them in Llyn Ogwen. He had got away with it every time thanks to his friendship with a local corrupt magistrate Geoff, who was the landlord of the Douglas Arms Hotel in Bethesda. I remember those days well – on occasions, young men were found drowned in that lake, after having ‘gone swimming whilst drunk’.

Geoff and his wife Sheila had a son who, like Aled Jones and Catrin Finch, was a bit of a child star. Geoff’s son was a very talented organist and succeeded in winning a scholarship to Eton. As with Aled and Catrin, TV programmes and media articles appeared regarding the genius that was Geoff’s son. I think that he went on to either Oxford or Cambridge and after that returned to north Wales, to St Asaph Cathedral. There was a problem at that Cathedral – in 2015 Hugh Davies, the man who had been the choirmaster and organist at St Asaph, 1985-98, was imprisoned for the possession of child porn. Even more worryingly, a former music pupil of Davies’s who had alleged that Davies had abused him whilst he was a teenager killed himself.

Sir William Shelton was also MP for Streatham when Oliver Brooke, Professor of Paediatrics at St George’s, was jailed in 1986 for the possession of huge quantities of child porn – which he had stored in offices at St George’s…

There was another notorious establishment in Shelton’s constituency – Cynthia Payne’s brothel at Ambleside Avenue. Cynthia’s brothel came to national prominence in 1978 when the police raided it and found a sex party in full swing attended by over 50 men, including a peer, a number of solicitors and a vicar. What was not published in the press was that a number of consultants from St George’s availed themselves of the services of Cynthia’s brothel – she was also known to have judges on her guest list. After the trial in 1980, Cynthia ended up in Holloway, but none of the brothel’s customers were named let alone prosecuted. The police raided Cynthia again in 1986, whilst another party was underway but at her trial in 1987 Cynthia was acquitted.

I do not mind if Cynthia held sex parties for consenting adults and I certainly don’t think that she should have been imprisoned for doing so, but the worrying thing about Cynthia’s brothel was the allegations that men with a taste for sexual activities which did not involve consenting adults were using it as a networking base. Friendships between judges, Top Doctors, solicitors, policemen etc made in the brothel could have proved very useful in the events of people being charged for sex offences.

The detectives who worked on the Oliver Brooke case were livid when Brooke was released early on appeal after the judge compared Brooke’s collection of child porn to a collection of cigarette cards. The police who had investigated Brooke maintained that he was Mr Big in a pan-European child porn ring.

Cynthia Payne was very friendly with Screaming Lord Sutch, the leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and at one point Sutch shared the house/brothel at Ambleside Avenue with her. Sutch was famous for polling more votes than Dr Death’s continuing SDP in the 1990 Bootle election, but what was less well-known was that David Sutch suffered from manic-depression and at times became very ill. I think the arrangement with Cynthia was that they were looking after each other, having both been through a bad time. Sutch hung himself in 1999 after a long period of severe depression. He had been under medical care for years and was known to have been in a very bad way.  So like all those former kids in care and mental health patients in north Wales who knew the names of the guilty and the details of their crimes, it would seem that David Sutch too wasn’t given the care that he needed when he was seriously ill and WHOOPS he killed himself. And his memories will have died with him – the memories of all those people who were visiting the brothel, those doctors and judges and peers and politicians who would have had a lot to lose if ever they were to be named in say, a child abuse scandal and David Sutch recognised their names.

David Sutch hung himself just before the Waterhouse Report was published. So he was not receiving appropriate help for severe depression whilst the Waterhouse Inquiry was underway and taking evidence.

Why do I remember so much about the brothel at Ambleside Avenue? Because at the time when I was being hounded out of my job at St George’s and arrested on trumped up charges at the behest of the mental health services in north Wales, I lived in Streatham. Not a million miles away from Ambleside Avenue. No I didn’t ever pop across for a cup of tea with Cynthia and Lord Sutch, but that’s because I didn’t at the time know that St George’s and their associates had links with and were concealing the criminal activities of the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales – I only found out about that years later, when my lawyer obtained documentation from St George’s and Springfield.

I described in my post ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London’ how those esteemed experts at St George’s all agreed with Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends that I was Most Dangerous and was probably planning to murder Dafydd et al in their beds, yet Professor Nigel Eastman – one of the corrupt Top Doctors at St George’s who is a mate of Helena Kennedy (see post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’) – told me that he thought that I ought to go back to live in north Wales. This was my desire as well, because I hated London and presumed that they were simply all quite mad down there and although there was also a bunch of mad, corrupt Top Doctors constantly having me arrested when I was in north Wales as well, I reckoned that if I was going to be threatened and harassed constantly I’d rather be living in nice surroundings. However I did think it a little odd that Eastman had recommended this – did he want me to murder Jones and the paedophiles in cold blood and that’s why he recommended that I go back and live on their patch?? But what if Eastman et al had been concerned about who I might meet if I remained living in Streatham? They knew that I had researched Jones and the paedophiles’ friends, they knew that I was identifying their associates and they knew that I was beginning to find out the extent of their criminal activities. Just imagine if I continued to live in Streatham and started comparing notes with Cynthia Payne or David Sutch…

It is interesting to note that at her second trial Cynthia was acquitted. In 1987. By which time, Mary Wynch, Alison Taylor and I were making a lot of noise about the criminal activities of Dafydd Alun Jones and Lucille Hughes in north Wales. The Dafydd and Lucille who were facilitating a paedophile ring in north Wales which was trafficking children to London – the Dafydd and Lucille who were on very good terms with all those Top Doctors and social workers based at St George’s.

I was interested to read that William Shelton was ‘a traditionalist on moral issues’, in the light of what was happening in his constituency.

Dafydd Alun Jones was a traditionalist on moral issues as well – at least when he was giving talks to the members of various Churches in north Wales (see post ‘A Serious Moral Collapse?’). Then when he’d finished his lecture he would return to base to facilitate a paedophile gang, sexually exploit the patients, lie in Court and sell drugs to addicts.

After Thatcher became leader of the Tory Party, William Shelton worked as her PPS for a year. Shelton was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Dept of Education and Science, 1981-83. The Secretary of State for Education and the Science at the time was Sir Keith Joseph. Brown and me wrote to Keith Joseph when we were undergrads – about student funding – and Keith Joseph wrote us a very rude letter back. Thatcher probably put us on her hit list then and subsequently escalated our names to the very top when we complained about Gwynne the lobotomist and Dafydd and the paedophiles a few years later.

As befits someone who was a traditionalist on moral issues, William Shelton was banned from being a company director for five years in 1997, after an investigation into ‘financial irregularities’ in his company Access To Justice. Shelton had set up Access To Justice in 1995 to provide free legal advice for people on low incomes. Which sounds an interesting company for a hard right Thatcherite to have established. I wonder who was receiving the free legal advice and for what. Or indeed who was providing it.

After Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party in 1975, the victory party was held at Shelton’s house in Pimlico – Thatch and Denis attended the celebration.

Sir Peter Morrison – the Tory MP elected for Chester in 1974 and who supported Thatcher’s 1975 leadership campaign – was known to be abusing children in care in north Wales. One boy from London alleged that Sir Peter Morrison abused him and some children in care from Wrexham maintained that they were taken to London and supplied to men for sex. Morrison was Deputy Chair of the Tory Party, 1986-87 and Thatcher’s PPS in 1990. When Thatcher was challenged for the leadership of the Tory Party by ‘stalking horse’ Sir Anthony Meyer in 1989, it was William Shelton who led her campaign. Anthony Meyer didn’t manage to depose Thatcher on that occasion but she was sufficiently weakened by him to crumble in 1990 when there was another leadership challenge. The organiser of Thatcher’s leadership campaign in 1990 was Sir Peter Morrison.

I told the story of Sir Anthony Meyer and his leadership challenge in my post ‘The Celtic Iron Lady And Yet More Recent History’. Anthony Meyer died a real unsung hero. Not only did he know how bloody dangerous Thatcher was and how dysfunctional and corrupt the Tories in Clwyd – and their leaderene Beata Brookes – were, but I think that Anthony Meyer knew about the paedophile ring as well and was trying to chuck a spanner in their works. Meyer was constructed as a deluded old bugger with grandiose ambitions – he wasn’t, he was a very brave man who did north Wales a very big favour and I only wish that there had been more politicians like Meyer, instead of hordes of weak greedy little people who ignored something horrific in order to bag a seat in Parliament.

To return to Keith Hill, the mate of Blair’s who was MP for Streatham after Shelton. Years before he was appointed PPS to Blair, in 1997 Hill was appointed PPS to a big buddy of Blair, Hilary Armstrong. Armstrong was one of Blair’s inner circle and Blair repeatedly praises her loyalty and commitment to New Labour in his autobiography.

Hilary Armstrong was Labour MP for North West Durham, 1987-10 and is now in the Lords. She was a student at the University of East London (then West Ham Technical Institute) and then went to the University of Birmingham to do a Diploma in Social Work. Hilary describes herself as a ‘former social worker and lecturer’ – she lectured in Community and Youth Work at Sunderland Poly and was a community worker at Southwick Neighbourhood Action Project, Sunderland. Hilary also did a stint with VSO in Kenya.

So Hilary was yet another social worker selected as a candidate for Labour during those years when it was evident that there was one hell of a problem with children in the care of social workers being sexually abused. Just to add to the suspicion in Hilary’s case, there could have been a great degree of control exercised by the Labour Party machine regarding the choice of Hilary as a candidate and indeed when it was decided that Hilary might be needed in the Commons – because Hilary took over her dad’s Parliamentary seat when he retired! I’ll return to Hilary’s dad soon.

Hilary was a Durham County Councillor, for Crook North Division, 1985-88. She was PPS to John Smith when he was leader of the Labour Party 1992-94 and Hilary played a major part in ensuring that the Labour Party adopted the policy of OMOV. Hilary was a member of AMICUS, the union which was formed from a merger between the AEUU and MSF. At least one of the MSF reps at St George’s Hospital Medical School in the late 80s/early 90s was corrupt and was concealing serious misconduct and criminal activity. AMICUS later merged with the TGWU to form UNITE. Hilary used her union links to drum up support within the Labour Party to rewrite Clause IV.

In the 1992 General Election, both Tim Farron and Theresa May stood against Hilary.

Hilary Armstrong spent four years as Minister for Local Gov’t in the DETR (Dept for the Environment, Transport and the Regions) and then the DTLR (Dept for Transport, Local Gov’t and the Regions). Hilary’s boss during these years was none other than John Prescott.

After the 2001 General Election Blair appointed Hilary Chief Whip. In May 2006 she became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster; she was Minister for Social Exclusion, 2006-07. Hilary resigned from the Gov’t in June 2007 when Blair resigned as PM. Gordon subsequently appointed her as Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party’s Manifesto Committee regarding policy ideas covering children…

In 2010 Hilary was given her peerage. She is Chair of Changing Lives, a charity in the North East which provides services for people with complex needs – Changing Lives is commissioned to provide some services for the NHS.

Hilary is married to Paul Corrigan, who was a senior advisor to Blair and his Health Secretaries Alan Milburn and John Reid, 2001-07. Between 2007-09 Corrigan was Director of Strategy and Commissioning at London Strategic Health Authority.

Corrigan ticks every box that someone should who has been involved with our institutionally corrupt NHS which has concealed neglect, poor care, patient deaths and has ruined the lives of whistleblowers. He is or has been: a non-executive Director of the CQC, as well as of the Kings Fund and Nuffield Trust; adjunct Professor of Health Policy at Imperial College; adjunct Professor of Health Policy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; involved with Public Private Ltd (a consultancy firm based at Queen Elizabeth Street); a member of the Strategic Committee of Guys and Tommys Charity; a Trustee of the Ways To Wellness Foundation in Newcastle;  a Trustee of the English Touring Theatre.

Corrigan also works for NHS Providers, teaching on induction courses for non-executive and executive directors. He also describes himself as ‘a consultant and a coach’.

I have previously speculated that the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal which blew up between Feb and July 1987 in the North East of England provided a useful distraction and muddied the waters in a most convenient way at a time when Mary Wynch, Alison Taylor and I were all screaming loudly about the criminal activities in north Wales. My post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’ details some of the links between the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales and the North East of England.

Now to the man whose retirement enabled Hilary, his only child, to bag a seat in Parliament – Ernest Armstrong, Labour MP for North West Durham, 1964-87.

In 1983 one Tony Blair, a barrister living in London, was elected as Labour MP for the newly created constituency of Sedgefield, just next door to Ernest’s constituency. Just like that.

Ernest Armstrong went to Leeds Teacher Training College and became a primary school headmaster. He was elected as a Councillor on Sunderland Borough Council and Chaired the Sunderland Education Committee, 1960-65. Ernest was elected to Parliament in 1964. In 1965 he was appointed PPS to Tony Greenwood (who had been Deputy Leader of the Labour Party under Clement Attlee) and then PPS to Merlyn Rees.

Merlyn Rees was Labour MP for Leeds South (which changed its name to Morley and Leeds South in 1983), 1963-92. We now know that a paedophile ring was in operation in the Leeds area whilst Merlyn Rees was MP for that constituency. Furthermore there was serious police corruption in the region and it was also the stamping ground of Jimmy Savile. Savile was molesting patients in the local hospitals and Yorkshire was also host to the Kerr Haslam scandal. William Kerr and Michael Haslam were two psychiatrists in York who were known to be sexually assaulting and raping their female patients between the 1960s and 90s. They were not stopped until they had almost hit retirement age, never faced any action from the GMC and were not put on trial until the early years of the millennium – the trials were at Leeds Crown Court. Even then, only one of them went to prison and only for a short while. See post ‘All The Ingredients Of A Scandal…’ for details of the Kerr Haslam scandal.

Merlyn Rees was born in Pontypridd in south Wales but moved to London and went to school at Harrow. He was Secretary of State for N Ireland 1974-76, when the sexual abuse of children at the Kincora Boys Home in Belfast by Whitehall civil servants and members of the British Army was concealed. Rees then served as Home Secretary under Jim Callaghan between 1974-79. Bryn Estyn had been an approved school managed directly by the Home Office until just before Merlyn Rees was appointed Home Secretary. He will have known about the sexual assaults and brutality on the boys there. The Home Office was responsible for running Risley Remand Centre. Mary Wynch had been unlawfully arrested and imprisoned in Risley Remand Centre by Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends whilst Merlyn Rees was Home Secretary. Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends were using that place as their personal prison which was why Mary ended up in there – along with the kids in care from north Wales who complained about being sexually abused or beaten up.

Merlyn Rees retired from the Commons at the 1992 General Election. Just as it was all going off in North Wales, with police investigations into a suspected paedophile ring, former residents of children’s homes naming Gordon Anglesea – a senior officer with the North Wales Police – as having been one of the people who molested them and reports of the abuse of children in care in north Wales appearing in the London media. Then days before the General Election, five possible witnesses with information about the paedophile gang in north Wales were killed in a fire started by a petrol bomb  – the man who was alleged to have confessed to starting the fire was found dead days later having been hit by a lorry on a country road and one survivor of the fire died in mysterious circumstances after he alleged that victims of the paedophile gang were being murdered (see post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs).

As soon as Merlyn Rees stepped down from the Commons he was given a peerage and became Lord Merlyn-Rees.

Ernest Armstrong was Assistant Gov’t Whip, 1967-69 and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, 1969-70.

Ernest was a junior Minister in the Dept of Education and Science under Secretary of State Reg Prentice, 1974-75. Reg Prentice was a Minister in both Labour and Conservative Gov’ts. He was Labour MP for East Ham North (which later became Newham North East) from 1957 until 1977 when he defected to the Tories. Before he defected he was Minister of State at the Dept of Education and Science, 1964-66 – under Secretary of State Tony Crosland – then Secretary of State for Education and Science 1974-75.

Prentice left the Labour Party in 1977 after local activists deselected him. The local party had been infiltrated by Militant and in an attempt to ensure that Prentice wasn’t deselected, a Julian Lewis posed as a Labour moderate and joined the constituency party. It was later revealed that Julian Lewis had been backed by the far right Freedom Association. Lewis’s attempts to shore up Prentice’s position in the Labour Party were unsuccessful although he did gain control of the Newham Labour Party for a short time in 1976, but Lewis himself was elected as Tory MP for the New Forest in 1997, a seat he still occupies. Throughout the 80s Julian Lewis took part in covert activities to oppose left wing causes, particularly the anti-nuclear movement. He used Ann Widdecombe for this purpose (see post ‘Doris Karloff – Honest About Her Expenses But Not Much Else’).

After being deselected in Newham, Prentice became Tory MP for Daventry in 1979, after receiving considerable help from Lady Kisty Hesketh, Chair of the Daventry Conservative Association. Daventry is in Northamptonshire. The county contains St Andrews Hospital, a psychiatric hospital which for decades has been the centre of allegations of abuse and neglect and played a role in the case of Jeremy Bamber, a suspected serious miscarriage of justice (see post ‘Family Annihilation’). Much more recently there has been great concern at the number of learning disabled people being detained at St Andrews against the wishes of both they and their families. At least one such patient has died as a result of ‘restraint’ and ‘medication’.

After being elected as a Tory MP Prentice enjoyed a new lease of life and became a junior Minister for Social Security in the DHSS between 1979-81 in Thatcher’s Gov’t. The Secretary of State for Social Security at the time was Patrick Jenkin, who was best remembered for stating that if God had wanted us to have equal opportunities he wouldn’t have created men and women.  Which is almost as good as the old joke about the vicar who wrote a letter to the Times saying that if God had wanted us to run around naked we’d have been born with no clothes on.

There was of course organised abuse of children in Newham in the 70s and 80s – it was yet another Borough which was sending children in care to children’s homes in north Wales…

In 1992 John Major gave Prentice a peerage. In his later years, Prentice was President of the Conservative Association at Devizes. The local MP was Michael Ancram, Chairman of the Conservative Party.

After his stint with Reg Prenctice, Ernest Armstrong then became a junior Minister in the Dept of the Environment, 1975-79 – he served under two Secretaries of State there, initially under his friend Tony Crosland and then under Peter Shore. Peter Shore was MP for Stepney, 1964-97. Shortly after he was elected, he was appointed PPS to Harold Wilson the PM. Denis Healey referred to Shore as ‘Harold’s lapdog’. Stepney is in the Borough of Tower Hamlets. Tower Hamlets was yet another Borough that sent kids in its care into the arms of the paedophiles in north Wales (see post ‘Tower Hamlets, Paul Boateng and Tessa Jowell’). In 1994 Blair nominated Shore as his representative on the Commission On Standards in Public Life. Peter Shore received a peerage in 1997.

Ernest Armstrong’s obituary in the ‘Indie’ states that Ernest was very influential on Tony Crosland and civil servant Toby Weaver, whilst Crosland was Secretary of State for Education and Science, 1965-67. For more details about the bisexual Tony Crosland and the swinger whom he had an affair with, Roy Jenkins – whom Blair described as his ‘mentor’ – see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part I’.

Between 1981-87 Ernest was Deputy Speaker. He was Deputy to George Thomas aka Lord Tonypandy  – who concealed corruption and abuse of children whilst he was in the Welsh Office (see post ‘The Cradle of Filth’) and was posthumously investigated for historical child abuse himself, as was his friend Leo Abse.

George Thomas said of Armstrong that he was ‘a man whose reliability was as solid as Durham Cathedral’. Betty Boothroyd – who became Speaker herself and in that capacity prevented Ann Clwyd from asking questions in the House regarding the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal at the time of the investigations in the early 1990s – stated that Armstrong ‘helped to steer my early Parliamentary career’.

The good thing about Ernest was that he was a devout Christian – like his daughter’s bosom buddy Tony Blair and Tony’s wife Cherie. Ernest was to be precise a Methodist and was Vice-Chair of the Methodist Conference, 1974-75. Ernest was active in the UNA (United Nations Association).

Dafydd Alun Jones was invited to speak at Bangor University by the UNA some years ago – Dafydd was billed as an expert on drug abuse and was going to be speaking about that subject. Dafydd’s event was cancelled after I offered to attend and distribute information about Dafydd’s previous.

Like William Shelton, Ernest took a firm line on morality and he seconded Tim Sainsbury’s Private Members Indecent Displays (Control) Bill, 1980-81. I wonder if Ernest knew that Hilary’s and Blair’s friend Alastair Campbell used to write pornographic stories for Forum magazine? Although to be fair Forum didn’t have pictures in, just letters and stories and medical advice provided by Dr Philip Cauthery, who doubled up as the student doctor at Aston University whilst Aston had one of the highest rates of student suicides among UK universities. Cauthery also ran a sex therapy business with Dr Martin Cole in Birmingham, whom Mary Whitehouse tried to have prosecuted for running a brothel.

Ernest Armstrong was political advisor for the TV drama House of Cards. I never saw this, but I did hear a lot about it – I understand that the storyline centred around a particularly unpleasant scheming politician who was prepared to ruin and kill people in order to become PM.

Peter Howarth, one of the paedophiles who worked at Bryn Estyn who eventually went to prison for the serious sexual abuse of boys there, had between 1966-73 been employed at Axwell School in Gateshead. Matt Arnold had been the headmaster at Axwell whilst Howarth worked there. In May 1973 Arnold was appointed Head of Bryn Estyn. In November 1973 Howarth was appointed to a senior position in Bryn Estyn.

Just to remind readers – Ernest Armstrong was a teacher whose main interest was in education and he Chaired the Sunderland Education Committee between 1960-65. He also influenced and was friends with Tony Crosland, whilst Crosland was the Secretary of State for Education – whilst Howarth and Arnold worked at Gateshead.

Howarth and Arnold were not the only abusers of children in the North East of England. There was an approved school in Durham run by an ‘expert’ in ‘troubled children’ where children were being sexually and physically assaulted and whilst Blair was MP for Sedgefield one of the activists in his local Labour Party was convicted of child abuse.

After Keith Hill had finished being PPS to Hilary Armstrong, in 1998 he was appointed Assistant Gov’t Whip and then in 1999 Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (and Minister for London) at the DETR. Hill was responsible for local transport and transport in London. Hill also prepared the way for the London Mayoral elections and was Minister for the national joke that was the Millennium Dome.

After the 2001 General Election, Hill was appointed Deputy Chief Whip by Blair.

In 2003 Hill joined the many paedophiles’ friends in the Privy Council. (He was offered a knighthood in 2010 but turned it down.)

Until the 2005 General Election, Hill was Minister for Housing and Planning in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, ie. Prescott. It was after the 2005 reshuffle that Keith Hill became PPS to Blair. Hill returned to the backbenches when Gordon Brown became PM in 2007.

After leaving Parliament, Hill became Chair of Lambeth Living, an ALMO (arms-length management organisation) which administers most of Lambeth’s  social housing stock. In 2012 he was appointed as the independent regulator for ARMA (the Association of Managing Agents). ARMA is described as a trade association for firms managing private residential leasehold blocks of flats in England and Wales. It is a ‘self-regulating regime’. I cannot help wondering why, if the firms managing the accommodation are abiding by the law and adhering to health and safety regulations, they need Keith Hill to allow them to do what they want in the name of ‘self-regulation’ and ‘arms length management’.

Grenfell Tower anyone?

In Feb 1915 Keith became Chair of  the Residents Commission On Council Housing for Hammersmith and Fulham Council. We are told that ‘the Commission is working with council house tenants to explore how they can be given more control and safeguards over their homes, rents and service charges’. Sounds like service userdom for tenants to me – consult them and hold them responsible for things which they have no control over. It will then be their fault when their houses go up in flames a la Grenfell Tower.

When Keith Hill stood down from the Commons, Chuka Umunna took over the seat of Streatham. A feature in a local paper looked back on Keith Hill’s time as MP for the constituency and mentioned that in the late 1980s Keith Hill shared a flat with the transgender cross-dressing comedian, major Labour Party donor and aspiring Labour MP Eddie Izzard. Eddie is a big supporter of Jeremy Corbyn – who was one of the many people politically involved in Islington when Islington Council’s children’s homes had been infiltrated by a paedophile gang with links to organised crime. The paper reported that Hill and Izzard shared a flat in Ambleside Gardens in Streatham. From what I can work out there is no Ambleside Gardens in Streatham – but there is most definitely an Ambleside Avenue. It was where Cynthia and Lord Sutch lived – Cynthia’s brothel.

Until Keith Hill won Streatham for Labour, for many years Streatham had been a Tory constituency. Hill’s win was attributed to a boundary change, which resulted in a sizeable part of Brixton, including the town hall, being relocated to the constituency of Streatham. I do not know who will have been responsible for the boundary change – but it certainly presented an opportunity for yet more concealing of the organised abuse of children and associated serious crime.

Whilst searching the internet for info about Keith Hill, an unrelated but topical news report popped up. It mentioned a Baroness Julia Cumberlege who had Chaired the ‘Better Births’ National Maternity Review in 2015. The report featured a nice photo of Cumberlege with some new mums who had all stated that they were delighted with Cumberlege’s recommendations for natural births. Over the last few months there has been an admission that there has been far too much dogma regarding ‘natural birth’ and whilst it is absolutely fine for some women, a number of women have suffered serious injury or have lost their babies because of a reluctance of midwives to intervene. In some cases mothers have died. It was the dogmatic insistence on natural births by a group of aggressive – and incompetent -midwives at Furness General Hospital Cumbria that led to a spate of deaths of babies. The deaths were concealed by the NHS and the sordid truth was only discovered by James Titcombe after his own baby died at the hospital in 2008. James was subsequently invited to contribute to the CQC’s work re patient safety but resigned after facing relentless hostility and rudeness from the midwives associated with the CQC. Cumberlege’s review didn’t take the Cumbria experience into account then.

Julia Cumberlege was given a peerage in 1990 – she sits as a Tory. I don’t know WHY Cumberlege was given a peerage, her wiki simply intriguingly refers to her coming ‘from a medical family’. That usually translates as ‘my dad’s a Top Doctor’.

In 1986 Cumberlege was involved with producing a report which recommended allowing Angels to prescribe certain drugs. In mental health that has been interpreted as giving Angels carte blanche to forcibly drug any patient they feel like – a patient who may for example be questioning them or even complaining about being ‘restrained’ – without seeking another opinion.

After arriving in the Lords, Cumberlege was in 1992 appointed a junior Health Minister. Until 1997 she covered all health and social services matters in the Lords. So she’ll have covered the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, the associated criminality in the mental health services and the commissioning of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones to provide ‘substance abuse services’ for north Wales (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’).

Cumberlege was the ‘sponsor Minister’ for Plymouth, responsible for the regeneration and a budget of £45 million pa. Why she was let loose with that sort of money I do not know.

Speaking in the Lords in 2000 Cumberlege recommended replacing the NHS with an insurance premium. She has also promoted the use of private provision within the NHS and suggested that Gov’t should put hospitals under private practice. Note to Cumberlege: Cygnet Healthcare and the Priory are now being commissioned to provide huge swathes of mental health care for NHS patients. There has been scandal after scandal and numerous patient deaths. That is because Cygnet and the Priory are run by the same shite, unscrupulous Top Doctors who previously neglected their NHS patients and concealed criminal misconduct eg. Robert Kehoe, Adrienne Key and Robin Jacobson. Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence paid good money for treatment from the Priory Roehampton. They are both dead, having killed themselves.

In 2010 Cumberlege was awarded an honorary Fellowship by the RCN.
Cumberlege is, among other things: a Trustee of Cancer Research UK; a Senior Associate of the Kings Fund; Secretary of the Dying Well Parliamentary Group; Vice-President of the Royal Society for Public Health; honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians; Vice-President of the Royal College of Nursing and Midwifery; President of Age UK, East Sussex.

Cumberlege is a Roman Catholic. In 2006-07 she Chaired the Commission reviewing the approach of the Catholic Church in England and Wales to child protection. She also spoke at the Catholic Medical Association in Bristol in 2009 – the meeting was officiated by Catholic prelate Archbishop Peter Smith.

Peter Smith is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Southwark. He was Bishop of East Anglia (1995-01) and the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cardiff (2001-10). Peter Smith has a law degree from Exeter University.

Smith was named as Archbishop of Cardiff in the wake of a controversy regarding paedophile priests in the archdiocese.  Smith stated that he wanted ‘to help people bind up the wounds and bring healing’.

In 2010 Smith was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Southwark. In 2015 Southwark Crown Court heard that Peter Smith was one of two bishops responsible for allowing Father Antony McSweeney to be appointed a priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia following an incident in 1998 when a housekeeper found porn at McSweeney’s home. Peter Smith treated the matter as one for the church to deal with alone and did not involve the police. Since Smith made that decision, McSweeney was imprisoned for abusing boys at Grafton House children’s home between 1978-81.

Peter Smith has Chaired the Catholic Truth Society since 1993, Chaired the Dept for Christian Responsibility and Citizenship within the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales since 1998 and Chaired the Central Religious Advisory Committee of the BBC and ITC between 2001-04. He was made an honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Lampeter in 2004 and an honorary Fellow of Cardiff University in 2006.

In 2001 Cumberlege set up her own company, Cumberlege Connections Ltd. Her husband Patrick Cumberlege is a Director.

The Cumberleges were in the Courts earlier this year. They are opposing the development of affordable homes in East Sussex, in the village of Newick. The Cumberleges explained to the Court that they are residents of Newick and members of Newick Village Society. Patrick is the former Chairman of Newick Village Society and the Baroness has been a parish, district and County Councillor, ‘representing the village’. And they certainly don’t want riff-raff moving in near them.

No Ordinary Methods

My most recent reading material has been Dominic Carman’s biography of his father George the much feared Rottweiler of a barrister, ‘No Ordinary Man’. George Carman has featured on this blog in posts such as ‘Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd’, ‘Y Gwir Yn Y Byd – A Few Additional Comments’ and ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’, in which I discuss Carman’s role in the 1994 libel action brought by Gordon Anglesea after Private Eye and others named Anglesea as having sexually abused boys in care in north Wales and Carman’s role in Jeremy Thorpe’s trial in 1979. Successfully defending Thorpe after he stood trial for conspiracy and incitement to murder Norman Scott was what made Carman’s name and took him to London from Manchester where he had previously been based.

I speculated in ‘Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd – A Few Additional Comments’ that Carman had deliberately thrown the case when he defended Private Eye et al against Anglesea’s accusation of libel. By the time that Carman took that case he was known as the best libel barrister in the UK. He had built up an international reputation and the mention of his name was enough to cause people to settle actions out of Court. Anglesea had indeed abused boys in care in north Wales, he later went to prison for it – Carman was famed for trawling through people’s knicker drawers if he was facing them in Court and north Wales was heaving with evidence of and witnesses to the crimes of Anglesea and co. Carman losing that case was inexplicable.

I knew that Carman was a massively heavy drinker, was addicted to gambling, was violent to all of his partners and was so feared by the police and others that his partners could find no help even when they were visibly broken and bleeding. I knew that certainly when he worked in Manchester Carman spent his time socialising with what are euphemistically known as figures from the ‘underworld’, as well as with prostitutes, with bent police officers, ‘celebrities’, journalists and numerous other people. I also knew that when Carman was acting in a trial, crucial damning ‘evidence’ would be delivered to his team, literally during the trial, at a crucial point which would frequently win him the case.

The most famous example of this occurred when the South African journalist Jani Allan faced Carman in Court in 1992 after bringing a libel action against Channel 4. A crucial part of the case rested on Allan’s denial of an affair with a married man. Just after Allan swore on oath that she would not have such a relationship, a package arrived at the Court addressed to Carman. He refused to open it, but Jan Tomalin – the in-house lawyer for Channel 4 – seemed to know that this package was good news and she opened it. Inside was a notebook which Jani Allan had used as a diary in 1984-85 and in which she had recorded her sexual fantasies whilst undergoing psychiatric care. She was finished. If I was Jani Allan I’d want to know how anyone – let alone Carman’s team – got their hands on that, but I have found no references to any such investigation.

Dominic’s book however makes it clear that Carman was far more unpleasant, ruthless and questionable than anyone ever previously dared suggest. There are indications that he had been badly damaged when young by incredibly harsh treatment at St Joseph’s School in Blackpool run by the Irish Christian Brothers – years later a number of former pupils alleged abuse during their time there. Carman simply didn’t speak about his experiences at St Joseph’s.

Carman was very, very well networked. He would have been in a position to thrash out deals behind the scenes with a whole variety of people.

Carman enjoyed being seen in the company of women and even cultivated the image of a womaniser. I had heard rumours that he was bisexual, but one thing that I learnt from Dominic’s book is that Carman’s first wife maintained that Carman was never interested in her sexually, that their marriage was unconsummated, that he received postcards which were obviously from men rather than women and that she believed that he was gay, but he kept what she believed were sexual relationships with other men very quiet indeed. This marriage only lasted three years and Carman failed to mention it in his Who’s Who entry. Indeed, the lady concerned claims that Carman worked very hard to ensure that her account of a truly dreadful relationship never made it into the public domain.

Carman’s second wife, Dominic’s mother, stated that after the children were born Carman stopped having sex with her. Her story is remarkably similar to that told by his first wife – excessive drinking, huge gambling debts and a very high level of physical and mental abuse. Dominic remembers witnessing his father’s violent attacks on his mother.

Carman had a third wife. Guess what – he undermined and belittled her, forced her to give up her career and spend her days watching his performances in Court instead and didn’t have a sexual relationship with her either.

As well as these three marriages, Carman had numerous other close friendships with women and was regularly seen hanging out with teenage ‘hostesses’ in ‘gentlemen’s clubs’ and women who were known to be working as prostitutes (not only those considered to be ‘high class call girls’).

From 1986 Carman had a long term relationship with a barrister called Karen Phillips who hung out with showbiz folk including Julia Morley, Russ Abbott and Bruce Forsyth’s wife Winnie. She was also friends with Dr Veronica Varney and Martin Landau. Elton John’s wife Renate was co-director of one of Phillips’s companies and Carman acted with Karen for Renate in her divorce from Elton. A number of Carman’s clients were friends with Karen including Norman Lamont, Richard Branson, Aidan Barclay and Marco Pierre White.

Between 1980-93 Karen  was also in a relationship with David Green. Carman formed an alliance with Green’s wife whom Carman had traced through ‘detective work’. Interestingly enough although Green was a wealthy man who was able to supply Phillips with a flat in an expensive part of London and a BMW, his company ended up going into liquidation – although Karen succeeded in keeping possession of the valuable flat and even the car. Phillips gave up law in the early 1990s and became involved with Charity Work, evolving into a lady who lunches. At one point she lent her flat to Sarah Ferguson – one of Karen’s mates was a friend of Fergie’s.

Towards the end of Carman’s life he became very angry when photos of Phillips in the company of boxing promoter Jarvis Astaire began appearing in glossy magazines and gossip columns. Carman watched Phillips, followed her and discussed her activities with another lawyer who worked with her. Phillips was someone else who maintained that throughout her very long relationship with Carman they never had sex.

Carman’s very first relationship with a woman was with Anne Meuller whilst they were both at Oxford. Anne Meuller ended up breaking their engagement off because she was unable to cope with Carman’s bisexuality – one presumes that Carman ended up making a nuisance of himself because Anne engaged the services of solicitors to threaten legal action against him. Anne later became Dame Anne and was the most successful civil servant of her generation, being appointed as the Second Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office (1984-87) and then moving to the Treasury (1987-90). She was Chancellor of De Montfort University (1991-95), a Director of BSkyB as well as CARE International and was associated with Manchester Business School. Dame Anne died in 2000 so like Carman is no longer able to answer questions.

For a man who never or rarely had sex with his wives/partners and who spent much of his spare time getting bladdered in clubs with other women whom everyone presumed that he was having sex with, Carman reacted very strongly on the occasions that he suspected his female partners of infidelity. At one point when he (wrongly) believed that one of his wives was having an affair with another man, he violently assaulted the man in question cracking his ribs.

Carman’s whole existence was one of behaving appalling towards other people but this rarely becoming public and Carman rarely facing any consequences. When he was older and famous, various gossip columnists – including Nigel Dempster – encountered him ripped to the tits in clubs in dubious company but not a word was ever printed about it.

After Jeremy Thorpe had been charged but before Carman had relocated to London, Carman crashed his car whilst drunk – until this incident Carman regularly drove whilst well over the limit. He was arrested and taken to Platt Lane Police Station. He declined the breathalyser and called his solicitor Ian Burton. Carman did the ‘don’t you know who I am’ bit. The plods in the station didn’t know who he was, so Carman told them that he was ‘standing Counsel to the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester’, ie. James Anderton. Even the plods knew who he was and Carman demanded that the police phone Anderton. They rang Anderton’s home and his wife answered – she contacted Anderton who was at the time out at a dinner. When Anderton heard that Carman was in police custody, a Superintendent in uniform was despatched to Platt Lane Police Station. Whilst waiting for the cavalry, Carman was busy telling the plods in the station what to do and raising points of law, which the plods would be in no position to know actually existed or not. Carman was actually charged and Burton represented him in Court, although Carman wrote the mitigation speech. He received a mild slap – a £150 fine and a one year ban. Dominic Carman commented that the ‘press comment was fairly modest’ – even though the barrister who had been retained for one of the most high profile criminal trials of the 20 century had crashed his car whilst pissed and been arrested. Carman’s punishment on a professional level was to be restricted to working in Altrincham County Court for a year, issuing judgement summons’s.

John Anderton was of course the notoriously unhinged Chief Constable who had a bee in his bonnet about ‘immorality’, hated prostitutes so much that some of his own officers speculated that he might have been the person carrying out the murders for which Peter Sutcliffe was later convicted, stated that people who contracted AIDS were ‘swirling in a human cesspit of their own making’ and maintained that he was a prophet. Anderton was famous for stating that he would ‘clean up’ Manchester, especially in terms of porn, sex work and police corruption. An account of Anderton’s colleagues and their relationships with the paedophiles’ friends can be found in my post ‘Top Of The Cops’ and ‘A Stalker’s Network’.

Carman will have known a few other people as well as Anderton. In previous posts, I speculated that Carman will have known about the North Wales Paedophile Ring and may have even known some of the paedophiles’ friends from the north Wales/Cheshire ring as a result of his boozing and clubbing with bent police officers, gangsters and journos in Manchester. Dominic’s book mentions some of the locations at which Carman lived – Carman lived in Wilmslow and Altrincham. Those areas covered the location of the Cheshire paedophile ring and were not a million miles away from Chester, the constituency of Sir Peter Morrison the MP who was abusing boys in care in north Wales. Carman will also have found out a great deal by being marooned working in Altrincham County Court – although he’ll have known a great deal anyway, because before and after that his duties as a barrister took him to Courts in Cheshire. John Stalker, the Greater Manchester Police Officer featured in my posts ‘Top Of The Cops’ and ‘A Stalker’s Network’, also lived in Cheshire – as did great swathes of the professional classes who worked in Manchester.

Carman didn’t move to London until 1980, but he was already very well-networked by the time that he acted for Thorpe.

Carman read law at Balliol College, Oxford. Whilst there he was friends with Dick Taverne (who later became a Labour MP, but then defected to the SDP – he is now in the Lords). Patrick Mayhew read law with him – the Patrick Mayhew who later was the legal assessor for the GMC when Dr Morris Fraser was allowed to continue working as a psychiatrist despite convictions for paedophilia, the Patrick Mayhew who in his capacity as Attorney General authorised contempt of Court proceedings against me on the basis of Dr Tony Francis’s (Dr X’s) perjury, after I alleged that serious abuses were happening in the north Wales psychiatric services. Carman also knew barrister Stanley Brodie at Oxford and shared a room with George Carver, who later became Deputy Director of the CIA. He knew Sir Robin Day – who was also big mates with Sir Ronnie Waterhouse – and William Rees-Mogg. Carman was also friends with Vivian Price – who was the best man at Carman’s first wedding – and later became one of Carman’s clients as well. Oh – and Carman was friends with a man called Jeremy Thorpe. Nicolas Browne-Wilkinson who later became a Lord Justice of Appeal was at Oxford with Carman.

After graduation, Carman spent a short time in London and worked as a libel reader for the News of the World. He tried his hand at business – he set a girl up as a masseuse in a flat in Great Portland Street (the GMC offices are in Great Portland Street), but the girl disappeared after she was faced with a client who expected rather more than a massage. Carman had paid rent on the flat in advance, so was left out of pocket.

Carman looked for a pupillage in London and used the connections of his former tutor at Balliol to do this. He was taken on as the pupil of Neil Lawson who later became Chairman of the Law Commission and a High Court judge.

However Carman discovered that he was far too poor to afford to continue with a pupillage in London – particularly in those days, one really needed a private income to sustain oneself as a pupil barrister – and he returned to Blackpool (by now his mother was dying). Carman took up a pupillage in Manchester with Godfrey Heilpern – who acted for Myra Hindley in her 1966 trial. Readers may remember how many of the corrupt lawyers on the Chester and Wales Circuit who assisted the paedophiles’ friends were involved in that trial – Heilpern will have known all of them, including Ronnie Waterhouse. Joseph Cantley was working in chambers in Manchester at this time – Cantley later presided over the trial of Jeremy Thorpe – as was Fenton Atkinson, who presided over the trial of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady. Carman became friendly with Sir Basil Nield, a Recorder of Manchester and was also popular with Sir Robertson Crichton, who was a Recorder of Manchester. Carman was mates with solicitor John Budd and was also admired by Gerald (Lord) Gardiner, Leonard Kaplan, Robert McCrindle and Jack Nahum QC.

Carman’s first wife was the daughter of a local Tory grandee. Carman was persuaded to put himself forward as a Parliamentary candidate and he got as far as being shortlisted for Salford for the Tories. (Whilst Carman was at Oxford his tutor Richard Crossman – who held a series of Ministerial posts in Harold Wilson’s Gov’t – had asked him to consider standing for Parliament.)

Between 1966-71 Carman worked on a great many personal injury cases. These frequently involved industrial injury and Carman was often instructed by the trade union solicitors Thompsons. Thompsons were brothers Brian and Robin, two champagne socialists from Hampstead with close links to trade union leaders. Nic Carter, who set up the Thompsons Manchester office, socialised with Carman.

Carman had begun to land High Court work in London whilst he was still in Manchester. He was helped by John Gorna, a well connected solicitor who was described by his daughter as a member of the ‘Catholic mafia’. Gorna was godfather to Dominic Carman.

John Gorna was a Director of Manchester United and gave Carman work for the club. Carman advised the club’s Chairman Louis Edwards and his son Martin. Carman acted for George Best when Best was sued by a girlfriend – it was Gorna and Sir Matt Busby who retained Carman. The case was unexpectedly settled quickly. Carman also successfully defended George Best’s mate, Pat Crerand – another Man United player – when he broke someone’s jaw and was charged with GBH. Carman became good mates with George Best but the friendship ended abruptly after Best had an affair with Carman’s wife. When Carman lived in Altrincham his next door neighbour was Willy Morgan, the recently retired captain of Man Utd. Another neighbour was solicitor John Elliot, the son of Charles Elliot QC.

Carman worked with celebs and legal bigwigs in Manchester but he also slummed it in some well-known dives, including the Nile Club on Moss Side and Russian Dave’s which was known for prostitution. During this time Carman was regularly hiring prostitutes but was also having gay relationships.

Carman was turned down for silk in 1970 by the office of the Labour Lord Chancellor Lord Gardiner. Distraught, he went to chat to his old Oxford mate Dick Taverne, who was then Finance Secretary to the Treasury – Taverne had worked with Gardiner on the Family Law Reform Committee.

The following year not only was Carman made a QC, but he was also offered a place in the chambers of Sir Peter Rawlinson who had recently been appointed as Ted Heath’s Attorney General. Carman turned it down because he lacked the money to move to London. Carman was certainly very tempted by the offer – but if you’re going to lose thousands every month in casinos you’re going to be seriously short of money.

Carman stopped driving after the car crash that caused him to call on the services of James Anderton, after that he depended upon taxis and lifts. He was ably assisted by a retired Manchester police sergeant John Cooper who worked at the Manchester courts – after bouts of all night drinking Carman would summon Cooper who would drive him home.

As well as personal injury work resulting from industrial accidents, Carman built up quite a name for himself in personal injury cases as a result of what Dominic Carman quaintly terms ‘health authority blunders’. Carman’s adversary in the High Court in Manchester in many such cases was Patrick Russell QC, who later became an Appeal Court judge. As with so many of Carman’s ‘court room adversaries’, Russell and Carman seemed to get on very well and they were good at negotiating deals when they encountered each other in personal injury cases. One of Carman’s notable successes after a ‘health authority blunder’ secured a settlement of £310k after someone was left a paraplegic – so that was one hell of a blunder. Carman’s last case of this nature was in 1987 – by which time he was in London. He secured a settlement of £550k from Berkshire Health Authority for a 14 year old girl who suffered permanent injury after falling out of her parents car in the grounds of Eton College. How falling out of one’s parents car on the premises of the country’s most elite public school could ever be the fault of Berkshire Health Authority I cannot imagine, but then I’m not George Carman.

Although it was Carman’s success in defending Thorpe that made him a household name and took him to London in 1980, Sir David Napley – Thorpe’s solicitor who retained Carman to act for Thorpe – was alleged to have spotted Carman’s genius in 1973 when Carman acted for James Hogan, the manager of Battersea funfair. Carman had been instructed by John Gorna after Hogan was charged with the manslaughter of five children as a result of gross negligence, when an accident that should never have happened did. The case was heard at the Old Bailey – Roger Lane-Smith, a solicitor from Gorna’s firm, stayed in London with Carman for the duration of the case. Carman’s defence of Hogan was actually predicated on the argument that Hogan was so utterly incompetent that he should never have been given responsibility for managing the funfair. The strategy worked, Carman won. Napley had been involved in the trial himself, he had represented the engineer Frank Etches.

It was after this that Napley started instructing Carman.

Thorpe was not the only politician in deep shit whom Napley represented – Napley was Greville Janner’s solicitor when Janner was interviewed over child sex offences in the early 1990s. Napley was so certain that Janner would be charged that he retained Carman – but of course charges were dropped although the CPS later admitted that a prosecution should have gone ahead.

My post ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’ discusses Thorpe’s career and his trial which I did know quite a lot about already having lived in west Somerset whilst Thorpe was busy in north Devon, but Dominic’s book supplies a few more details of which I was unaware.

Thorpe’s solicitor was initially Lord Goodman – someone else who was able to extract people from rather difficult situations – but he then hired Napley. Napley instructed Carman – but Napley had quoted a staggeringly low fee to Thorpe. Furthermore, James Goldsmith was footing the bill for a substantial chunk of it – but Carman allegedly didn’t know this. Carman did meet Thorpe for dinner on more than one occasion at Thorpe’s house at Orme Square and noticed the treasures within. Thorpe’s wife Marion had been left a wealthy woman after her divorce from the Earl of Harewood. Carman was representing Thorpe for a very low fee – he was told that the reward would be his reputation. So presumably Napley, Carman and co were pretty sure that they would be winning that case – a bit of an assumption in view of the enormous amount of evidence against Thorpe. But the tarot’s proved to be accurate – they did win.

The committal hearing for Thorpe and his co-defendants was held at Minehead Magistrates Court and Napley turned up at Minehead in his Rolls. I remember much over-awing of the bumpkins happening at the time, so this sort of grandiosity won’t have been accidental.

Kingsley Napley partner Christopher Murray later described Gareth Williams QC – later Lord Williams – as ‘very cunning’. Williams acted for one of Thorpe’s co-defendants George Deakin, a man from south Wales. Gareth Williams was from north Wales and was acquainted with many of the paedophiles’ friends. On the first day of the committal hearing Williams applied for reporting restrictions to be lifted, arguing that the interests of his client were different from his co-defendants. This derailed Norman Scott and his team who had to cope with reporting and publicity that they had not expected.

Over the next three weeks, Napley phoned Carman daily to review tactics. He was phoning Carman because Carman wasn’t at the committal hearing – Napley had insisted on doing that himself, although no-one was ever told why Napley followed this rather unusual path.

‘No Ordinary Man’ reproduces parts of the transcript of the Thorpe trial, particularly Cantley’s hectoring and downright abuse of Norman Scott both during cross-examination and in the summing up. One is reminded of how accurate Peter Cook’s satire on the bent old git was. Dominic observes that Norman Scott was ‘problematic’ because he was a ‘tough witness’ and put up a ‘good performance’, even recalling distinguishing marks on Thorpe’s body when it was suggested that Thorpe had never had a relationship with him. Yes Dominic – as I’ve mentioned previously on this blog, most of the west country put Norman’s ‘good performance’ down to the fact that he was telling the truth.

Dominic reveals that it was Lord Widgery, the Lord Chief Justice, who agreed to change the date of the trial after Callaghan announced the date of the forthcoming General Election, in which Thorpe would be standing. Dominic also reveals that Carman attempted to have Auberon Waugh, the Private Eye journo who stood against Thorpe in north Devon at the General Election, jailed if he didn’t ‘tone down’ his ‘election rhetoric’. Carman actually obtained an injunction against Waugh preventing him from distributing an election address leaflet – Carman’s original request to the Lord Chief Justice was refused, so Carman literally went straight down the corridor to the Court of Appeal and dear old Lord Denning the Master of the Rolls overturned the Lord Chief Justice’s decision and granted the injunction.

The prosecuting counsel at Thorpe’s trial was Peter Taylor QC, the son of a Top Doctor from Newcastle. Taylor had handled many personal injury cases on the North Eastern Circuit. Dominic’s book reveals that Taylor was most helpful to Thorpe’s defence barrister Carman. Taylor disclosed privately to Carman that there was ‘significant evidence’ proving that Thorpe was gay, which included a sexually explicit postcard that Thorpe had sent to a man whom he had had a relationship with. Thus Carman ensured that Thorpe was never directly questioned about his homosexuality. And of course Carman famously didn’t call Thorpe to give evidence. Dominic believes that in disclosing the info to Carman ‘Taylor’s honourable gesture reflected his strong commitment to fairness and objectivity’ and that Carman was ‘relieved’ ‘for the integrity of the Bar’ that Taylor acted as he did – it means that there  was no additional evidence of homosexuality in the prosecution case, so it was ‘a good deal for Thorpe’.

Not only that, but Taylor ‘avoided going for Thorpe’s jugular throughout the case and the closing speech was no exception’ – it was interpreted by the press as sympathetic to Thorpe. Indeed Taylor explained that Thorpe’s career had been ‘blighted by the Scott affair’, it was ‘a tragedy of truly Greek or Shakespearian proportions – the slow but inevitable destruction of a man by the stamp of one defect’.

Carman of course did go for the jugular – in his closing speech he maintained that Thorpe’s life ‘had more than its fair share of grief and agony…he had the misfortune to meet Norman Scott’. As for Norman, according to Carman he was ‘sad, mad or bad or a combination of all three, I care not’.

Whilst they were awaiting the verdict, Thorpe and his co-defendants lunched in a private room at the Old Bailey on smoked salmon, beef and Chablis – the grub was provided by Thorpe’s Liberal Party friend and colleague the molester Clement Freud.

The Carmans stayed in touch with Thorpe and Dominic recalls that in 2001 he was lunching with him when it was revealed that Thorpe had ‘joked’ to Carman that if he got him off he’d make him a High Court judge. In reality though even after Carman did do as required, it was many months before Thorpe even wrote to thank Carman and when he did, Thorpe simply observed that ‘as for the Bench, I am sure that it will only be a matter of time’.

So what became of the esteemed lawyers after the trial? Carman’s fees rocketed and work flooded in. Peter Taylor became a judge, Chaired the Hillsborough Disaster Inquiry and between 1992-96 was Lord Chief Justice. Judge Joseph Cantley disappeared into oblivion – as Peter Cook quipped when he was playing the part of the Biased Judge summing up for the jury ‘and now you must retire – as must I – and consider your verdict of not guilty’. Dominic reveals that at the time of the trial Carman had known Cantley for 20 years. Cantley had been the Presiding judge on the Northern Circuit where Carman had practised. Cantley was the son of a Top Doctor, a product of Manchester Grammar School and Manchester University who unusually had married the widow of his pupil master.

So had there been ‘a strong commitment to fairness and objectivity’? Or the most disgraceful crucifixion of a man who had been the target of a murder plot by a bunch of corrupt lawyers and politicians who were all connected with each other and realised that goodies would come their way as long as they let a potential murderer – who was connected to them – walk free?

The official story is that Carman was plucked from obscurity in the north to a glittering life in London after working miracles at Thorpe’s trial. But what if someone in London knew that there was a barrister in the north who boozed excessively, who had huge gambling debts, who was close to scores of crooked people from all walks of life but who was also well-connected with ‘respectable’ members of society – someone who not only needed a barrister for the Thorpe trial but who thought that such a barrister might prove very useful if they were based in London rather than Manchester?

A theme one constantly encounters when reading about George Carman and his excesses is that people ‘liked him’. But people were also very, very frightened of him. Probably far too frightened to admit that they didn’t like him at all.

After the Thorpe trial, Carman acted in two more high profile trials before he moved to London.

In 1980 in Leeds Carman represented Lord Kagan in the Kagan Textiles Case – Kagan’s manufactured the famous Gannex raincoats as sported by Harold Wilson and Prince Philip even after the shit hit the fan. Kagan was found guilty of theft and false accounting and went to prison. He kept his seat in the Lords and whilst he was in prison he negotiated a business deal to supply the prison service with uniforms.

In Carman’s last big case in Manchester he acted for the Police Federation on behalf of four police officers who ‘had been involved’ in the death of Jimmy Kelley in Liverpool. The officers received support from the local MP – a Harold Wilson. A verdict of ‘death by misadventure’ was returned.

The Police Federation supported North Wales Police’s senior officer Gordon Anglesea throughout his trial for abusing children, supported him in his plans to appeal after he was convicted and offered to pay his legal costs and turned out in force at his funeral to give him a good send off.

When Carman sold his house in Altrincham to move to London, the money that he received from the sale went to pay his gambling debts to the Manchester Playboy Club. Carman had a symbiotic relationship with casinos and clubs – he ran up huge debts with them but they also frequently used him for legal advice when they were applying for licences.

After moving to London Carman became head of New Court Chambers. Throughout the 1980s his supporting juniors in New Court were Michael Brompton and Tony Clover. Brompton knew Carman very well because he shared a room in Chambers with him.

It was in London that Carman developed his reputation as a libel lawyer, particularly for celebs.

Carman handled two libel cases for Richard Branson – Hugh Tomlinson was Carman’s junior for those. Charles Howard QC was his junior when he acted for Phil Lynott and Maria Aitken (in drugs cases rather than libel). Charles Howard married Rosie Boycott, who was editor of the Indie and the Express and who was a friend of Carman – Carman was best man at their wedding.

Carman picked up international work and was involved in cases in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Washington and New York. By the early 1980s he had come to the attention of Sir Denys Roberts, Hong Kong’s Chief Justice and was offered a position as a High Court judge in Hong Kong. Carman really wanted such a position in England – so off he trotted for a chat with his mate Lord Denning, Master of the Rolls. Denning had a word with the Lord Chief Justice, Geoffrey Lane – it is the Lord Chief Justice who makes the recommendations for High Court appointments to the Lord Chancellor. Denning had previously worked with Lord Lane. Sadly Lane told Denning that Carman was not on his list. Carman decided to take up the offer from Hong Kong. However for some reason he changed his mind during a stay in Leicester of all places.

Carman was in Leicester in 1981 for the trial of Dr Leonard Arthur at Leicester Crown Court. Leonard Arthur was on trial after he had ordered nursing staff to provide no care or treatment to a newly born baby with Down’s syndrome. Arthur also prescribed doses of dihydrocodeine. Unsurprisingly the baby died. I can remember this case well and although the prosecution was brought by the anti-abortion group LIFE – and this is what Dominic has recorded in his book – the only reason why anyone at all got to hear about the baby’s death was because a nurse who witnessed what had happened was appalled at the deliberate killing of a disabled, but very much alive, baby. At the time that nurse was constructed as an interfering know nothing who was well above her station. These days she would be called a whistleblower.

Douglas Draycott QC acted for the prosecution, Carman for the defence. Carman did not put Leonard Arthur into the witness box. However he did call a nurse, a Margaret Slater – who casually mentioned in her evidence that her own baby would not be here today if it wasn’t for Dr Arthur. I don’t know how she managed to be in Court on that day, it is all rather reminiscent of the way that Jani Allan’s old diaries turned up in Court at a crucial moment. The nurse saved Dr Arthur’s neck and he was found not guilty. The nurse was assisted by Carman who ‘destroyed’ Prof Alan Usher, the Home office pathologist who was ready with evidence about the damage to the baby’s brain. The Presiding judge was Justice Farquarson.

History records that Leonard Arthur was not someone who didn’t think that disabled people were worth keeping alive, but someone who was a caring Top Doctor, selflessly devoted to children, worked night and day for the greater good of the nation’s infants – you get the picture.

So what happened in Leicester to persuade Carman to turn down the job of a High Court judge in Hong Kong and remain in England working as a barrister instead? Who knows.

Leicester County Council of course had a problem with a paedophile ring in its children’s services, a ring that Lord Greville Janner was alleged to have been involved with. Frank Beck, the notorious social worker who devised whacky therapies which served as a cover for his abuse of children, was given five life sentences for sexually abusing hundreds of children in 1991. Beck had been involved with the Liberal Party.

One lawyer was particularly impressed by George Carman’s successful defence of a doctor who finished off a baby with learning disabilities – that was a Cherie Booth who praised Carman for ensuring that ‘justice’ prevailed. In the 1980s Cherie Booth was a barrister in New Court Chambers! There was another barrister in New Court as well, who was Carman’s junior – Cherie knew him well, he was a Tony Blair!

Now the Blairs have kept THAT quiet – I’ve been trying to find out in which chambers old Blair worked before he became an MP and it’s not a piece of info that appears in any of the obvious places. But now I know. Blair never forgot the talents of his former boss. Within six months of Blair becoming Prime Minister, Carman found himself at a reception in Downing Street along with Richard Branson when Blair told Branson that Carman was the best lawyer that he could have found.

In Nov 1982 Carman defended Geoffrey Prime who worked for GCHQ but also spied for the KGB. Prime was a paedophile and a member of PIE who had been involved with under-aged girls in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area. Carman’s junior in that case was Tony Clover and the Presiding judge was Lord Chief Justice Lane. Prime was convicted, so Carman took the case to appeal – it was dismissed by Lord Justice Lawton.

Carman was involved in the case involving the grisly death of Roberto Calvi who in 1982 was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London. Calvi had been President of the ‘Vatican’s Bank’, Banco Ambrosiano and was believed many, including his family, to have been murdered. Lurid stories of Masonic corruption and involvement with Opus Dei circulated – and all the money was missing from the bank. David Napley represented Calvi’s family at the inquest which was held by Dr David Paul, the coroner for the City of London – Paul rushed the inquiry. The autopsy was carried out by Prof Keith Simpson. A suicide verdict was returned – which was widely ridiculed because there were numerous aspects of the case which suggested that Calvi had been the victim of a bizarre crime. His underpants were full of bricks which was a bit weird and his hands were clean and well-manicured, which if he’d been crawling around under Blackfriars Bridge hanging himself they would not have been. Carman wanted a fresh inquest in front of Lord Geoffrey Lane. In March 1983 the Lord Chief Justice agreed to overturn the verdict. A new coroner was appointed, Dr Graham Davies and an open verdict was returned in June 1983.

In 1983 in Burnley Carman defended Peter Adamson aka Len Fairclough from Coronation Street after he was charged with indecently assaulting two eight year old girls in a swimming pool. Adamson was cleared although it was alleged that Carman believed that he had been guilty. In 1988 Adamson flogged a story to the Sun admitting that he had been guilty.

Following the Adamson revelations, in 1989 Prof George Steiner joked about Carman’s ability to get anyone off just about anything. It increased Carman’s business.

Carman’s close female friends in London included Sue Cook from BBC’s Crimewatch, Pippa Jessel the former wife of Tory MP Toby Jessel, Frances Heggarty/Hyfield the barrister/crime writer and Lady Annunziata Asquith.

Dominic relates a very worrying story when read in the light of Carman’s conduct towards his female partners and his links with questionable people in high places. Dominic tells us that in 1984 Carman had a ‘close relationship’ with a 30 year old woman but the ’10 month relationship ended with disastrous consequences’. The lady moved to London and into Carman’s Lincoln’s Inn flat and was ‘surprised when he showed no physical interest in her’. I think that we’ve been here before. This woman was ’emotionally volatile’ and Carman’s ‘subsequent humiliation of her precipitated a nervous breakdown’. According to Dominic, George was terrified of anything to do with mental illness – he asked Dominic ‘to accompany him as he registered her as a psychiatric inpatient, before telling her mother to come and pick up the pieces’.

Now there’s a story. So what did Carman do to the ’emotionally volatile’ lady whom he had invited to move in with him? Or what had she witnessed or found out? Which hospital so obligingly admitted her as an in-patient and how did they repackage the horror? I think we should be told…

One of Carman’s most famous triumphs was successfully defending Ken Dodd after Dodd was charged with tax evasion. The presiding judge was none other than our old friend – and indeed Carman’s old friend – Ronnie Waterhouse, the prosecuting counsel was Brian Leveson and the trial was held at Liverpool Crown Court. Waterhouse was a member of the Garrick – as was Carman and indeed their mutual friend Robin Day. Waterhouse also knew Thorpe through their Liberal Party activities.

Ken Dodd was a much-loved son of Liverpool. Waterhouse was born just a few miles away from Ken Dodd’s birthplace. The not guilty verdict caused much entertainment because of the overwhelming amount of evidence against Dodd – Dodd himself joked about not paying his taxes. The Inland Revenue had discovered accounts of Dodd’s in Jersey and the Isle of Man, there was thousands of pounds in used notes secreted about his house, there were references to wheelbarrows of money being moved around, it was ridiculous. A neighbour commented to me at the time that it looked as though the only questions would be ‘which prison and for how many years?’

At the opening of the trial Carman claimed that Dodd was suffering from ventricular tachycardia, a potentially fatal condition, that Dodd was in imminent danger of death and that the trial would almost certainly kill him. Carman tried to get the trial stopped on medical grounds – two weeks before the trial Carman had sent Dodd to a heart specialist, although the date for the trial had been set many months previously. The trial did go ahead and Dodd is still alive – and performing – today, nearly twenty years later.

The Top Doctor who gave evidence that Dodd was about to drop dead was Dr Rhys Williams from Manchester Royal Infirmary. However another Top Doctor, Prof John Camm, testified that Dodd was fit for trial. Camm worked at St Georges Hospital Medical School, so God only knows how anyone persuaded him to give evidence against a dodgy lawyer. Er – yes, I’ve just realised the significance of that quip – dear old St George’s had an awful lot to hide and had participated in some terrible things at the time of Dodd’s trial.

There also seem to have been some porkies told about Dodd’s age at his trial. Dodd’s Who’s Who entries for years have stated that he is four years younger than the age given when he stood trial.

Carman read out letters from Harold Wilson, Ted Heath and Margaret Thatcher at Dodd’s trial, all supportive of Dodd. Character evidence was supplied by Roy Hudd, Eric Sykes, Michael Billington, John Fisher (the head of Variety at Thames Television) and Shelia Murray (the Secretary of Clatterbridge Hospital’s Cancer Research Trust – Dodd had helped them raise £10 million).

It was revealed at the trial that in 1984 Reginald Hunter – Dodd’s accountant between 1972-82 – had been prosecuted at Mold Crown Court for false accounting to enable other clients to avoid tax. Waterhouse grew up in Flintshire and retained close links there. Mold is the legal/administrative centre of Flintshire.

The barrister on the losing side of the Dodd case, Brian Leveson, did OK for himself. He became a High Court judge and Lord Leveson found fame and fortune when he Chaired the 2011-12 public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press. Like Dodd, Leveson was a local boy made big from Liverpool.

Carman got into libel work via Oscar Beuselinck, whom Carman knew as the in-house lawyer for the Mirror News Group. Back in the 50s Oscar had represented entertainers, including John Osborne. He had become a Director of Woodfall Films with Osborne and acted for Hollywood clients. In the 70s Oscar began taking defamation work. He sued Private Eye in the 60s but then became their principal solicitor, representing them against Robert Maxwell in 1986. Maxwell himself then recruited Oscar in 1989, although Oscar resigned after a damning Panorama documentary on Maxwell was screened in 1991 – however he did remain as a consultant to Maxwell.

Carman’s juniors in libel cases were Adrienne Page, Victoria Sharp, Andrew Caldecott, James Price, Heather Rogers and Hugh Tomlinson.

Not only do the same names keep cropping up in terms of barristers whom Carman worked with or faced as opponents in Court, but the same judges keep popping up as well. Carman appeared many times in the Court of Mr Justice Drake. We know that judges are impartial of course but in one case Drake made it clear after the case that he was delighted that Carman had won the case. That case in question was the 1989 libel action against the News of the World – owned by the News Group, Murdoch’s empire – brought by Sonia Sutcliffe, the wife of Peter Sutcliffe. The News of the Screws admitted that they HAD defamed Sonia Sutcliffe, they had even paid £50k into Court, but Sutcliffe wanted more. Barbara Jones, a journo for the Mail on Sunday was named as a co-defendant – if Sonia won, Jones would have been liable for the News of the Screws’ indemnity damages and costs, which would have left Jones financially ruined. The potential for this had led to total hostility between Jones and News Group. Now Jones had previously been on holiday with Sonia and they had been pretty good friends – they had been planning to write a book together. But it was Jones’s evidence in Court that completely shafted Sonia Sutcliffe – evidence that Jones had gained regarding Sonia’s alleged attitude towards her husbands crimes during their holiday. Jones defended herself in Court – but she much appreciated Carman’s ‘quiet support and encouragement’. He advised her and told her what to do and say in Court, including telling her to ‘rile’ Sonia.

Sonia Sutcliffe lost the case and was left with a bill for 1/4 of a million quid.

There was little public sympathy for Sonia Sutcliffe at the time – she was the wife of a serial killer, there were allegations flying that she knew that her husband had been attacking women and she’d already won a number of big settlements from newspapers in libel cases.

Something else was happening at the time. The press were desperate to stem the tide of libel awards. The settlements were getting bigger and bigger and it was costing them a great deal of money. One man in particular was costing them a fortune – George Carman.

The more that I find out about the Sonia Sutcliffe case the more that it looks as though the sort of deal that seems to have happened in the Thorpe trial had occurred. A group of very greedy, very unscrupulous, very powerful people could well have got together behind the scenes and come to a convenient arrangement. The only person who didn’t benefit was Sonia Sutcliffe. But she wasn’t a press baron, or a journo or a lawyer. She was the wife of a murderer. Carman was hailed as a hero in the press and Tom Crone, News Group’s lawyer – a barrister who had previously worked for the Mirror Group – made a triumphalist speech outside of the Court. Crone was a close friend of Carman. In 2011 Crone resigned from his job as News International’s legal affairs manager during the phone hacking scandal, after it was revealed that the phone of the murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler had been hacked.

Not only did Justice Drake announce his satisfaction with the verdict – the Justice Drake who later presided over the libel case brought by Gordon Anglesea in which Carman represented Private Eye and others against Anglesea but lost – but the Private Eye lot were so pleased that they held a party which Carman attended. Sonia had successfully sued them previously…

The Jani Allan case that I mentioned earlier also occurred at the time that newspapers were worried about spiralling libel costs. Like Sonia Sutcliffe, Jani Allan had won a number of libel cases. It was Carman who finished Jani Allan off – but her counsel was Charles Howard QC, Carman’s mate.

I mentioned that Carman produced some interesting medical evidence in the Ken Dodd trial. Carman seemed to know some very helpful Top Doctors. In 1987 Carman’s former best man and good friend from Oxford Vivian Price QC was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and driving twice whilst disqualified. Price was a senior barrister and a High Court judge. Carman obtained medical evidence at the 11th hour stating that Price had a brain tumour. It got Price off a prison sentence. The very understanding judge was Justice Farquarson – who had presided over the trial of Dr Leonard Arthur in which Carman had triumphed.

Carman also produced a helpful medical expert when he defended the Sun in 1994 after Gillian Taylforth the Eastenders actress brought a libel case against them. Taylforth and her partner Geoff Knights had been stopped on a motorway and Knights had been arrested and charged with driving offences. A policeman then sold a story to the Sun claiming that Gillian Taylforth had been giving Knights oral sex in the car. Taylforth and Knights denied it and their story was that Knights suffered from pancreatitis, had been in pain, so Taylforth undid his trousers to rub his belly. Carman produced Dr Iain Murray Lyon, a pancreatitis specialist, who testified that Knights could have been faking the pancreatitis attack by describing the symptoms. Well yes he could, but Dr Lyon was not there at the time so had no idea at all whether Knights was making it up or not. Not only did Carman produce a Top Doctor out of the hat, but at the beginning of the second week of the trial a video arrived at court. It was a film six years old of a drunken party attended by the Eastenders cast. Taylforth could be seen messing around with a sausage joking about oral sex and gesticulating with a bottle between her legs. She was fully clothed, it was daylight and there were many people present – it was hardly an orgy and wasn’t that shocking. But Carman made it sound like Sodom and Gomorrah. Taylforth lost the case and became so distressed that she collapsed and had to be wheeled out of the court on a stretcher attached to a supply of oxygen. Everyone had a real laugh and once again Tom Crone appeared outside the Court to crow. Michael Beloff QC acted for Taylforth but no-one asked what a policeman was doing selling a story to the Sun or how an ancient video of a party long-forgotten had found its way into Carman’s hands at a most convenient time.

As for the Top Doctor – Dr Iain Murray-Lyon works at Harley Street and at the Edward VII Hospital. That hospital was featured in my post ‘Update On ‘Tainted Blood’ Scandal’. It was the hospital which employed the nurse who looked after the Duchess of Cambridge when she suffered from severe pregnancy-induced vomiting who committed suicide when some Australian shock jocks rang up pretending to be the Queen. The Chairman of the hospital was Lord Simon Glenarthur – who is also the Director of the MDU and was the Health Minister responsible for the NHS ‘tainted blood’ scandal (see post ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz…’).

Figures from the whole spectrum of the press loved Carman and utilised his talents. Yet he threatened and crapped on them as well. In 1982 Carman had Sir David English the editor of the Daily Mail fined for contempt for a prejudicial article about the Leonard Arthur case. Ten years later when Carman discovered that his ex-wife had given an interview to the Daily Mail he leant on English – who was still the editor – to tone down the article. It was published two days after the verdict following Carman’s savaging of Jani Allan in Court.

In July 1993 Carman was retained by Ian Burton to defend John Jermyn Hervey, the Marquis of Bristol, on drugs charges. The trial was at Snaresbrook Crown Court and the judge was Owen Stable QC. During the trial – and in his consultations with Carman before the trial – Hervey took both coke and heroin (he was even consuming drugs in the bogs in Court). The sentence was deferred on the grounds that Hervey was receiving treatment in the Charter Clinic, Chelsea. Before sentencing Hervey discharged himself from the clinic and went to France on a massive drugs binge. Carman put in a plea for mitigation based on Hervey’s deprived childhood no less, but he was jailed nonetheless. Hervey died from an AIDS related illness in 1999. He was a wildly promiscuous user of rent boys and by his own estimation had sex with thousands of them. Presumably infecting more than a few.

In Nov 1993 Elton John retained Carman to take on Carman’s own friends at Mirror Group Newspapers – Carman had secured a settlement of £1 million for Elton in 1988 after the Sun alleged that Elton John had suffered from an eating disorder which resulted in him spitting food out. The ever dependable Justice Drake presided and awarded exemplary damages to Elton. However in 1995 the Court of Appeal reduced the damages and laid out recommendations for future damages – just when the press really needed it. This bought an end to juries imposing punitive damages on newspapers and also resulted in the settlement of a libel action brought by Michael Jackson agains Mirror Group Newspapers.

Whoever could tell who was dealing with who behind the scenes and who was stuffing who over? Although the press barons got bigger and bigger and Carman became richer and richer and even more feared.

In 1998 the Times speculated that Carman’s earnings had dropped off – Carman was so cross that he phoned Clare Dyer, the Guardian’s legal correspondent and Frances Gibb, the Times’ legal editor and ensured that Gibb was au fait with his present success and recent work. Gibb duly obliged by running a big article the following week that flattered Carman.

Carman revelled in his Hollywood clients, including Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. He was retained by them in 1997 after a Sunday Express article made allegations about their involvement with Scientology, Cruise’s alleged infertility and the couple’s unhappy marriage. Carman sent ‘compelling medical evidence’ to the Express Group and in Oct 1998 the Express Group paid Cruise and Kidman damages and costs. They divorced some two years later amid allegations of Scientology and marital distress.

In 2000 the celebrity chef Marco Pierre White sued the New York Times and International Herald Tribune. Geoffrey Ripon QC acted for the newspapers and Carman acted for White. Carman won and the day after the damages were awarded White got married – Michael Winner was the best man and George Carman was a guest.

I remember hearing about Marco Pierre White in the early 1990s, from a young woman who had worked for him in London. This young woman had some very interesting stories – stories of drug use, of sexual exploitation and chaos in the business. She claimed to have had sex with White herself – in fact she told me that she had been in some sort of relationship with him whilst his ‘official’ partner was somebody else. Not that the young woman in question will ever be able to flog a story to anyone about it all – because she was an in-patient at the Hergest Unit, with ‘paranoid schizophrenia’ of course. She had grown up in north Wales, gone to university in London and met Marco Pierre White down there. Her parents confirmed that. But after a rather wild time in London she had a breakdown and was brought back to Wales – by a Top Doctor – and sectioned at Ysbyty Gwynedd. By exactly the same social workers and Top Doctors who unlawfully imprisoned me, pretty much at the same time that I was unlawfully detained. Her parents also told me that the law had been repeatedly broken and when they complained about it Gwynedd Social Services and Ysbyty Gwynedd lied constantly. I got to know this young woman quite well over the following years. Her one desire was to ‘get better’ and go back to London. The mental health services were very keen for her not to do this. I and her other friends used to notice that on a number of occasions she seemed to recover from her distress and enrol for courses, find jobs etc. But every time that she began to improve, the Top Doctors at Hergest – usually Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) – would alter her ‘medication’ and within three weeks she would be back in hospital, usually sectioned. It makes me wonder what goes on in Marco Pierre White’s world.

Carman took to hosting parties in the 1990s. He held a bash in the summer of 1993. Guests included the Lord Chief Justice, Sue Lawley, Ian Hislop, Norman Lamont, Sir David English (Chair of Associated Newspapers, which was the major shareholder of Euromoney Publications, Dominic Carman’s employers). Carman held another knees-up in 1998 at the Ritz, but a lot of people seemed to be unavailable, including Tom Bingham the Lord Chief Justice, David Frost, Elton John, Ian Hislop, Mo Mowlam, Imran Khan and his wife Jemima, Richard Branson and Jeffrey Archer. Those who did attend included  Dominic Lawson, Robin Day, Sue Cook, P.D. James, Freddie Forsythe, Lord Robert Alexander QC, Lord Gareth Williams, Lord Grabiner, Aidan Barclay and the Blairs, who dropped in on their way to Tuscany! Conrad Black turned up after the party had ended.

In 1998 Sir Ronnie Waterhouse had just finished taking evidence about the most appalling abuse of children in care in north Wales at the public inquiry which he was Chairing. A lot of people were very shocked at what witnessed said about their time in north Wales children’s homes in the 70s and 80s – it was far worse than anyone expected. A number of male  witnesses talked about being taken to Cheshire and London to be sexually abused by older men.

In 1993 George Carman purchased a house in Wimbledon and lived there until 1999. Wimbledon is just down the road from St George’s Hospital Medical School and is the preferred location for the residences of the senior staff of that institution. In 1999 Carman moved to another house in Wimbledon. He held a party there after winning the case for Al Fayed against Neil Hamilton.

Blair was not the only Prime Minister who had reason to be grateful to Carman. In April 1994 he acted for Thatcher in a copyright dispute involving her memoirs. In 1995 he was retained by John Major after the New Statesman published allegations about Clare Latimer. Major stopped the retention of Carman after the Observer published a comment about Carman offering free advice to Major – an apology to Carman was published and somehow John Major’s action was settled shortly afterwards.

Aspiring Prime Ministers sought Carman’s help as well. Portillo retained Carman with regard to the allegations of past homosexual activity on the part of Portillo – until Portillo decided to admit publicly that in the past he had participated in gay sex.

Very rich people whose funding is vital to Prime Ministers also beat a path to Carman’s door. In 1999 Carman advised Michael Ashcroft when he sued the Times after they published allegations of money laundering and drugs related crimes. Ashcroft met with Carman and that afternoon met with Murdoch after Jeff Randall acted as the broker to get them together. A deal was struck with a settlement. In the mid 1990s I knew someone who responded to the TV adverts that were being screened in Wales at the time urging people to report crime to Crimestoppers. This person reported the suspicious death of an elderly lady in one of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones’s ‘nursing homes’ and also reported one of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones’s ‘substance abuse patients’ who was openly seeling Class A drugs to schoolchildren in Bangor. No action was taken, so this person rang Crimestoppers again a few weeks later and repeated their allegations. They were told that Crimestoppers would not be taking any action because Crimestoppers were treating these calls as hoaxes.

Lord Michael Ashcroft funded and established Crimestoppers.

I suppose that it was inevitable that Jeffrey Archer crossed Carman’s path. In Oct 1999 Carman was retained by Eversheds to act for Archer in libel procedings against the Times. The matter was settled, an apology was issued and damages paid. In Dec 1999, new evidence emerged regarding a libel trial involving Archer and the Star twelve years previously. Carman was asked by Lovells – solicitors for Express Newspapers – to act against Archer in appealing the Star libel decision. Carman had been advising Archer eight weeks earlier. Carman held a conference at Lovells with David Pannick QC to discuss strategy. The civil action was abandoned in April 2000 when Archer faced criminal charges. Archer wrote to Carman in Oct 2000 regarding his impending trial for perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice, requesting lunch with Carman in order to ‘discuss matters’.

Another crook of impressive proportions who had dealings wirth Carman was Robert Maxwell. Between 1990-91 Maxwell was a regular client of Carman’s. Carman almost got into charity work through Maxwell. Carman supported Shelter and Maxwell promised to run a Mirror campaign for the homeless but it never happened. Carman parted company  with Shelter soon afterwards stating that he was fed up of giving them money. Carman had been acting for Maxwell in a libel case against the BBC but Maxwell went overboard before the case was heard. After Maxwell’s death Kevin Maxwell took over the Maxwell Communication Group and Ian Maxwell took over the Mirror Group. There  was of course the matter of the missing £426 million fron two pension funds at the Mirror Group. In Jan 1992 Carman appeared for Kevin in front of the Commons Select Committee – John Jarvis QC appeared for Ian and the Chair of the Committee was Frank Field. David Pannick QC was a member of the Maxwell’s advisory team. Carman visited Kevin’s wife Pandora at home to chat with her about the deep shit that the Maxwells were in. However Carman declined to defend Kevin at his subsequent trial – Carman told Clare Dyer of the Gyardian that he didn’t want to be committed to a long legal aid defence. Carman was therefore in breach of Bar Council rules but who cares about that, the Maxwells had no dosh anymore…

In 1993 Carman represented Branson in a libel claim against British Airways and secured a settlement of £610k. The settlement was somehow leaked to the Sun and was a scoop for David Yelland, the then City editor. Five years later Murdoch made Yelland the editor. In 1998 Carman represented Branson again, in a libel case against Guy Snowden, a major lottery operator. The presiding judge was Justice Morland – who also presided over the trial of the two ten year olds who killed James Bulger – who had known Carman for 50 years. They had been contemporaries at Oxford and both worked on the Northern  Circuit.

In the late 1990s Al Fayed was a regular client of Carman’s – numerous cases of Al Fayed’s were settled out of court or dropped. In 1999 Carman represented Al Fayed against Neil Hamilton – Desmond Browne QC acted for Hamilton and Justice Morland presided. One of Al Fayed’s many accusations against Hamilton was that Hamilton had procured rent boys. Hamilton was the MP for the Cheshire constituency that bordered on Sir Peter Morrison constituency and Hamilton and his wife attended social functions with Morrison. Carman won that case. Prior to that in 1995 Hamilton had sued the Guardian for libel – Carman succeeded in getting the case stopped on a point of law. Hamilton enlisted the help of Thatcher who had the law changed in Hamilton’s favour.

Carman did of course advise members of the Royal Family – including Diana, Prince Michael of Kent and Sarah Ferguson.

In 2000 Carman dissolved New Court Chambers and joined Elizabeth Appleby QC in her chambers – Carman took the room vacated by Cherie Booth, who had left to form Matrix. The former joint head of the chambers Michael Beloff QC left shortly after Carman joined.

Not only did Carman have access to helpful Top Doctors for his work as a barrister but he had his very own helpful Top Doctor on tap for his own medical needs – Dr Annie Coxon, a Harley street physician and neurologist. Annie Coxon was always on hand to deal with Carman’s ‘crises’ – which were nearly always a result of Carman drinking so much that he needed medical attention. On one occasion he collapsed in Court as a result of intoxication and Coxon even set up a drip for him as she attended. Coxon was known to take calls from Carman regularly in the early hours of the morning, she made sure that she was always available. There seems to have been major discord between Coxon and the Top Doctors who treated Carman at the end of his life when he developed cancer. He was of course treated privately by other Harley Street Top Doctors at the London Clinic but they seemed to freeze Coxon out of his care and she was not happy about this.

Coxon was a Catholic but converted to Islam over twenty years ago. She was introduced to Islam by the mother of the Sultan of Oman who was one of her patients. She was also the personal doctor of Al Fayed. Coxon was also the doctor of Jade Goody and was most critical of the NHS after Goody’s death from cancer.

Carman died of cancer in Jan 2001. Before he died he was courted by many cancer charities – he settled on supporting the Cancer Research Campaign (CRCUK) after Prof Gordon McVie visited him at home. His memorial service was attended by a number of people including Cherie Blair and Jeremy Thorpe.

George Carman seems to have touched the lives of a great many people who were involved in concealing the North Wales Child Abuse Ring. Carman’s mycelia reached everywhere. I was particularly surprised to find out that Carman’s senior clerk in New Court Chambers Bill Conner – Carman’s right hand man after Carman moved to London – was a keen birder. Enthusiastic birders get to know each other and travel across the UK regularly – the wealthier ones travel internationally. I have mentioned that my group of friends whilst I was at university in the early/mid-80s were birders – our house on Anglesey was the centre of much Bangor Bird Group activity. In 1985 just before we were all due to leave north Wales, my closest friend at university and house mate was killed in a car crash. My friend’s former boyfriend, also a well-known birder, was left brain-damaged and paralysed. My friend knew all about the problems that I was having with the north Wales mental health services. She was killed when a TR7 crashed into her head on whilst it was travelling on her side of the road. The driver of the TR7 was unscathed except for a broken arm. There was no investigation into the crash. A few weeks later Dr DGE Wood, the corrupt GP whom I now know was working very hard to conceal the criminal activities in north Wales and who ran the Student Health Centre at Bangor University, had a huge row with me when once more I raised the question of the misconduct of his colleagues. He finished by yelling at me that there was nothing for me in north Wales anymore and that I ought to leave the area and forget about everything that had happened there. A few days after my friend’s death, Wood’s colleague, the nurse who worked in the Student Health Centre, took my friend’s file out of the records locker and wrote ‘DEAD’ across the front of it in front of me. I wonder whether that was supposed to have been some sort of warning.

Ooh, nearly forgot – Sir John Kay, the High Court judge who issued Gwynedd Social Services with an injunction against me on the basis of affidavits from two social workers who perjured themselves (one of whom had never met me and the other one who had met me at most on three occasions) was a judge on the Northern Circuit. I could not work out at the time why a bunch of crooked social workers from Caernarfon had gone all the way to Leeds High Court to seek out a judge.

Sir John Kay knew George Carman.

Nasty business, organised child sexual abuse.
