The Battle Of The Cowshed

A few days ago a news item on the Radio 4 Today programme discussed how children’s services in Rotherham have been ‘turned around’ since the scandal concerning the en masse sexual abuse of children in care blew up. It was admitted that ‘we’re still not quite there yet’ and that there are still areas needing improvement, but it was stressed that things were very much better. Although things could hardly have got worse.

I have no idea whether anything has really got better in Rotherham’s Children’s Services – people did eventually resign over the scandal (although they all clung on for as long as they possibly could, they certainly weren’t willing to admit that they had wilfully ignored criminal gangs raping kids in care for years) and it might well be true that a clean up has happened and that people who actually know what they are doing are now running the services.

I am not however entirely convinced by the reassurances that all is now well in Rotherham. Rotherham’s Children’s Services were not taken over by organised criminal gangs  because of the fuckwittery of just those few people who resigned. A problem as big as Rotherham will have evolved over many years and virtually everyone involved in the ‘service’ will have been complicit. It was also admitted that in Rotherham, the police had completely ignored what was going on and in some cases had actively colluded – teenagers who had been raped and threatened with immolation by their rapists were told to piss off by the police when they tried to report the serious offences that had been committed against them. The region’s NHS services will also have been fully aware of what was happening to those teenagers, but as usual no-one has mentioned that. The education authorities will have known as well and the Third sector organisations.

As with the activities of the paedophiles and their friends in north Wales, most of Rotherham will have known.

I am also not reassured just because external inspections of Rotherham Children’s Services are now resulting in glowing reports. Inspections of health and social services can provide a fair and accurate reflection, but inspections are equally capable of maintaining that all is well in very troubled, even dangerous, services. When Sharon Shoesmith appeared on the Radio 4 PM programme immediately after the Baby P disaster, one of the first things that she did in her interview with Eddie Mair was to tell him that the shambles over which she presided was a three star service (or it may even have been a four star service). People working in the mental health services in north Wales in the 1990s were telling people that Dafydd and his cellar and the thugs in the Arfon Community Mental Health Team were among ‘the best in Europe’.

These people are not only mad and dishonest but they often personally know the people ‘independently’ inspecting their services.

The Lazarus-like recovery of the Rotherham Children’s Services has been attributed to Ian Thomas, who took up the post of Strategic Director, Children’s and Young Person’s Service in Rotherham Borough Council in Jan 2015. It was Ian Thomas who was interviewed on the Today programme and he was faced with the inevitable questions about the gangs who abused the children being South Asian, the children being white British and why hasn’t he been more vocal about this. Thomas emphasised that the common characteristic of the people who abused the children in Rotherham was that they were abusers. Whilst I was glad to hear him stress this, there is of course another common theme throughout ALL the big UK child care scandals – that the abuse happened to kids in care and social workers knew about it but ignored it. No-one dares mention this. There weren’t any South Asian gangs in north Wales – but there was  a gang of social workers working in collaboration with other professional people…

Who Chaired the Inquiry into the Rotherham Child Abuse Scandal and wrote the subsequent damning Report? Alexis Jay – the social worker who is now Chairing the Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse, which is falling apart after lawyers and survivors have walked out. The survivors’ rationale for exiting was that Jay is a social worker, it was social workers who abused them and rather than trying to achieve anything worthwhile Jay has turned the Inquiry into a ‘social workers talking shop’. She’s probably holding regular breaks for Mindfulness sessions. Alexis Jay might gave good reason to preside over a social workers talking shop rather than an Inquiry exposing the criminality and fuckwittery of those employed within the UK Social Services Depts – Jay was the social work senior manager who was responsible for the Orkney Satanic Abuse Scandal (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – The Scottish Play’).

Thomas had spent the previous years as Deputy Chief Executive and Strategic Director of Children’s Services with Derbyshire County Council. Derbyshire Social Services had a problem with child abuse in its child care service in the 1970s and 80s at least and there were connections between some of those who abused children in north Wales and paedophiles in Derbyshire. John Jillings, who carried out in the investigation into child abuse in Clwyd, was the former Director of Derbyshire Social Services. Jillings’s 1996 Report was so damning that Michael Beloff QC, the legal advisor to Clwyd County Council’s insurers, recommended that the Jillings Report should never be released to anyone and that if it was the Council’s insurance should be withdrawn. Councillors were told that if the insurance was withdrawn they would be personally liable for damages if any former kids in care sued, would be bankrupted and lose their homes. Beloff advised that Malcolm King – a Labour Councillor from Wrexham who had asked some very difficult questions about the paedophile gang in north Wales – should be sacked if he ever discovered the contents of the Report and disclosed them. Just for good measure, Clwyd County Council was abolished at the same time as the Jillings Report was submitted. The Jillings Report was pulped but just a few years ago someone actually turned up with a copy and it was made available. It was very, very heavily redacted but the conclusion was that horrific abuse had taken place in north Wales since 1974, had almost certainly dated back well before then as well and that what had happened to children in care was indefensible. However Jillings refused to say whether there was evidence of a paedophile ring at work. For details of the horrors that led to the Jillings Report, the idiots who ran the ‘services’ and the aftermath, see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake’.

Jillings began his inquiry in 1994. In 1992 five witnesses to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal were killed in a firebombing. The man who allegedly confessed to starting the fire was hit by a lorry and killed days later. One man who survived the fire and claimed that witnesses to the abuse in north Wales were being murdered was subsequently found dead shortly after giving evidence at the 1995 trial of John Allen – the owner and manager of the Bryn Alyn Community and a key figure in the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal – days before he was due to receive a payment from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. For details of the firebombing attack, see post ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’.

So perhaps we can understand why no-one could bring themselves to admit that a paedophile ring with links to serious organised crime was in operation in north Wales.

In Nov 2014, whilst Ian Thomas was still working for Derbyshire County Council, he was described as described as having ‘almost 30 years experience in private, voluntary and public sectors including 25 years in local government’ and had ‘worked for Derbyshire County Council since 2006 in a number of senior roles’. The world was told that Ian had presided over a great improvement in Derbyshire Children’s Services, which was reflected in Oftsed reports.

If Ian’s career is as described, he will definitely have come across the sort of criminality in children’s services and local authorities described on this blog. He may well not have participated in it, but he will have known that it was happening. Perhaps Ian is  a real star who is going into corrupt abusive children’s services and cleaning up – but we only have those ‘independent inspections’ to tell us that.

Before working for Derbyshire, Ian was a member of the senior leadership team at Trafford Council – he joined Trafford in 1999. You’ve guessed it – some of those involved in the abuse in north Wales had links with Trafford. It’s OK though – whilst at Trafford, Ian ‘helped transform the performance of social care and housing’ and the ‘social care performance went from weak to excellent’.

Ian is described as a ‘national leader’ within the Association of Directors of Children’s Services – he Chairs their National Resources and Sustainability Committee. My alarm bells are ringing – I know the sort of people who make up the Association of Directors of Children’s Services. They are members of the Mafia of Drips who have spent their careers watching children in their care being abused. If they had identified Ian as being any different from themselves they would not be telling people that he’s a national leader and letting him Chair committees.

Ian has a Masters from Lancaster University in Professional Practice (Children’s Services).  He is a ‘level 7 qualified executive coach and mentor’, which sounds seriously worrying.

Ian’s appointment to Rotherham was ‘welcomed’ by Paul Larkin, leader of Rotherham Borough Council. I very much doubt that was true – between 1997-03, Rotherham Councillors had allowed at least 1,400 teenagers in their care to be plied with alcohol and drugs and then battered and gang raped by serious criminals. The Council will not have been welcoming anyone who looked as though they might get to the bottom of that. Jo Clegg, Chair of the College of Social Work, stated that the ‘College work look forward to supporting Ian and his team in Rotherham’. The College of Social Work is endemically hopeless, if it were anything but endemically hopeless social work would not be in its current sorry state. They will not have looked forward to supporting Ian if he was going to ‘turn around’ the services, they’ll have looked forward to undermining him, blaming him for their own incompetence and negligence and getting him out of there.

In an interview with the Guardian in Dec 2014, Ian Thomas stated that the root of the problems in Rotherham were ‘weak leadership’. I rather gained the impression that it was serious organised crime and corruption in the Council, the police force and just about every other body in Rotherham. Ian goes on to say that  he knew ‘the last person and she’s a lovely woman’ so ‘I have to be careful what I say here’.

That is the crux of the problem. Everyone knows each other and they’ve all got to be careful what they say. I am not suggesting that colleagues should not be friends and I am certainly not suggesting that one should gratuitously kick one’s colleagues in the groin and then insult them in the national press, but if they are allowing a sex trafficking gang to take over the children’s services, one really does have to prioritise the welfare of the children over being careful what one says.

I spent 30 years watching drip after drip respond in an Ian-like way when I told people what was going on in north Wales. Some years ago I met two retired Gwynedd social workers socially through a chapel without realising at first that they had literally worked with the paedophile gang. They did of course know all about Dafydd and made no attempt to defend him at all – they remembered him as a monster whom everybody would have very much liked to have seen the back of. Yet when I named one of those who had attempted to have me arrested by lying to the police, I was met with ‘oh I worked  with her, I liked her’. The woman whom we were discussing was known to be a highly abusive person – her colleague to whom I was talking must have known about the mountain of serious complaints. I was then told that Keith Fearns was ‘decisive’. Keith Fearns was the leader of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team who threatened and abused the clients and perjured themselves in attempts to have people imprisoned. One female social worker who blew the whistle on them alleged that she’d been sexually assaulted by a male colleague in that team. A male nurse alleged that Fearns had physically assaulted him. Another social worker who gave up and left in despair described Fearns as ‘the most abusive professional that I have ever met’.  The decisive Fearns was a very nasty piece of work who was assisting a vicious paedophile gang.

Problems like this cannot be remedied by a mutual cup of Fairtrade coffee and a bit more continuing professional development in mindfulness-based practice. Furthermore, because the professions of health and social care have been allowed to become this dysfunctional, nearly everybody within is part of the Mafia of Drips. A number of people were honest enough to admit to me ‘I know he/she is dreadful, but I’ve got to work with him/her.’ They know that there will be absolutely no support from colleagues if they blow the whistle. Which is why all anybody dares do is describe a criminal sociopath as being ‘decisive’.

The nurse who blew the whistle on the biggest mental healthcare scandal in the UK in recent years has just been sacked and struck off the nursing register for having sex with her own husband. Not one colleague has stuck their head up above the parapet to declare that this is bonkers and dangerous. They’re far too frightened that they’ll be sacked for having sex with their own partners as well.

Let us look at the rest of Ian Thomas’s CV:

Accounts assistant, NSPCC, 1986-87. Finance Officer, London Borough of Newham, 1988-89. Senior Finance Officer(Social Services), London Borough of Tower Hamlets, 1989-92. Finance and Project Officer, Base 51 (health info for Nottingham teenagers), 1992-94. Senior Finance Officer, Derby City Council, 1997-99.

So Ian witnessed the financial transactions of the NSPCC, as well as the London Borough Councils of Newham and Tower Hamlets when they were doing business with John Allen and the Bryn Alyn Community and continued to send children in care into the arms of Allen and his paedophile gang even after complaints and deaths. Ian dispensed health information to teenagers in Nottinghamshire shortly after the Satanic Panic in that city and then he ran the finances of the paedophiles of Derbyshire.

Ian is either Of Them or he is a Master of Disguise.

When Ian was appointed to the post at Rotherham, two of his senior colleagues from Derbyshire County Council went with him. One of those was Mel Meggs, who was appointed Deputy Strategic Director for Children’s and Young Person’s Services for Rotherham Borough Council. Mel joined Rotherham in May 2016.

Mel had been Service Director, Early Help and Safeguarding at Derbyshire County Council (Children’s Services). Mel has ’30 years experience’ in ‘early help and social work’. So she’s been ignoring organised child abuse for a very long while then. At some point Mel was Head of Prevention at Leicester City Council. The Leicester City Council which ignored the paedophile gang numbering Frank Beck and Greville Janner among its members (see posts ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’). The Leicester City Council which funded a law centre in which a lawyer called Keith Vaz worked – after he had worked as a lawyer for Richmond-Upon-Thames Council and Islington Council, whilst both of those Councils had huge problems with organised paedophile rings operating within their social services (see post ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’).

Keith’s mum was a Councillor on Leicester City Council.

Mel is a member of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services Families, Communities and Young Persons Policy Committee.

Ian Thomas was head hunted for the Rotherham post by Malcolm Newsam, the Children’s Social Care Commissioner who oversees children’s services for Rotherham. Newsam was appointed by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan in 2014 in the wake of the Jay Report.

Yet in 2011 Malcolm Newsam was at the centre of a spat himself. Mail Online reported that Newsam was one of a number of temporary Directors who had been brought in by Kent County Council’s Conservative leader Katherine Kerswell as the Council cut services and oversaw the loss of 1500 jobs. Newsam was being paid 1250k per day.

That is a great deal of money. But – there was a ding dong in north Wales some years ago when it was revealed that a ‘troubleshooter’ sent in to Anglesey County Council by the Welsh Gov’t was being paid a great deal of money. Anglesey County Council was a nightmare, one Councillor had gone to prison, come out again and gone straight back onto the Council, corruption was endemic and had been for decades, local democracy did not exist and neither did any functioning ‘services’. The Welsh Gov’t probably thought that it was worth paying to try to get it sorted out and no sane person would ever work with Anglesey County Council unless they were paid danger money. The troubleshooter deserved the danger money as well, they gave him hell.

Kent is yet another place that has a history of child abuse stretching  years.

Newsam was also sent into the children’s services of Essex and Peterborough to ‘turn them around’.

In the face of all this turning around of services by troubleshooters, one wonders why there are currently police investigations into most local authority children’s services re the abuse of children in care and why so many of the UK’s children’s services are in special measures.

But then again, even the best troubleshooter has an enormous task on their hands if the whole region has colluded with organised crime for years and some of the officials who did so are now sitting in Parliament.

Whether Ian Thomas is a member of the Mafia of Drips or not, there was someone who did do something worthwhile in Rotherham and that was the lawyer who successfully prosecuted many members of the Rotherham gang who terrorised and abused so many underaged girls. This lawyer has recently been retained by the Welsh Gov’t and has stated that he wants Wales to be the safest country in Europe for women. He has a mountain to climb. Should anyone wish to draw his attention to this blog, he’ll find the names of the culprits, the accessories and details of some of the crimes here.

I continue to uncover more members of the Mafia of Drips. Let me introduce Nia Griffith, Labour MP for Llanelli since 2005.

Nia has featured on this blog before, when she was a member of the Welsh Affairs Committee who in 2012 ‘took oral evidence’ from Dafydd’s right hand man Clive Wolfendale, Chief Exec of CAIS, regarding Dafydd and Lucille’s need for many more millions of pounds of pubic money (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’). Before hearing the ‘evidence’ from Clive and others, Nia mentioned that she had just enjoyed ‘hospitality’, ie a lovely free lunch – or it may have been a dinner – from one of the Third sector organisations who were asking her for money, whom Nia noted provided a ‘superb’ quality of care. And superb nosh-ups for politicians as well presumably.

Nia went to Somerville College, Oxford and then did her PGCE at Bangor University (then called UCNW). Nia finished her PGCE in 1980, the year before I began my degree at Bangor.

So Nia will have known about everything that I found out about. She will have known that children in north Wales from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds were being abandoned by both Gwynedd Social Services and the schools and that there were a small number of near destitute quite young children who would actually visit the students halls of residences to go begging. She will have known that Friars School favoured some children from the more middle class families in Bangor and that those kids went on to occupy influential positions in the region, became paedophiles’ friends and formed an influential old boys network which they used to assist each other. Members included Elfed Roberts, former Assistant Chief Constable of North Wales Police and corrupt Chair of the North West Wales NHS Trust and Keith Thomson, former corrupt CEO of the North West Wales NHS Trust (see post ‘Former NHS Managers Of Notoriety Now Keeping A Low(er) Profile’). A member of the Friars network from a previous generation who ably assisted the paedophiles’ friends was Huw Wheldon, Mr Big of the BBC for many years during the 60s and 70s (see post ‘The Creme de la Creme’).

Yet Friars School also served the Maesgeirchan estate on the outskirts of Bangor, where many of those being shafted by the paedophiles’ friends lived. The Ty’r Felin children’s home was located on Maesgeirchan, where serious abuse occurred and where children were trafficked for sex, including down to Dolphin Square in London (see post ‘Are You Local?’). Friars School did not like the kids from families in difficulty, did not want them in the school and did nothing even when the staff knew that the kids were being ill treated or had even been abandoned by their parents. When the kids stopped coming to school no questions were asked.

Whilst I lived in north Wales I spoke to many people from different generations who went to Friars and this two tier system seemed to have operated for decades. Some men over the age of about 50 also described incredibly brutal practices, even in comparison to the education of boys in an era when it was routine to hit them. People have told me of how they were so mercilessly beaten at Friars that they couldn’t learn because they were emotional wrecks. One Jewish man from Anglesey who came to north Wales as a refugee from the Nazis told of how at Friars one particular teacher constantly assaulted him, told him in front of the class that he ought to be sent back to Germany because Mr Hitler knew how to deal with Jews and on one occasion threw him down a fire escape, causing injury. I heard about all this in a public lecture in Bangor and there were a number of other elderly former Friars pupils who all remembered this teacher and testified to his brutality. They told me that his nickname had simply been ‘Mochyn’ (Welsh for ‘pig’).

Nia Griffith trained as a teacher many years after the Jewish refugee was treated so badly, but I knew people who did teacher training in Bangor shortly after Nia – they told me the horror stories of the children who were being mistreated by social workers and of certain schools and teachers who were not conducting themselves as they should. It was like the stories about the North Wales Hospital Denbigh – if you lived in Bangor in the 1980s you heard about it. Of course there were many people who weren’t actually that bothered about what was happening to the plebs, including some trainee teachers.

Nia did not grow up on Maesgeirchan herself. Her father was Professor T. Gwynfor Griffith, a linguist who taught Italian Studies at Manchester University and her mother was Dr Rhiannon Howell. So Nia is from the Welsh speaking middle classes herself and went into teaching, a popular career choice for girls from that section of Welsh society in the 1970s. Some of those people made a substantial contribution to society as well.

Did Nia?

Well she was a language teacher who taught at Queen Elizabeth Cambria School, Carmarthen, as well as at Gowerton Comprehensive in Swansea and was then Head of Languages at Morriston Comprehensive School. She has been an education advisor and worked as an Estyn advisor from 1992. (Estyn is Wales’s equivalent of Ofsted and like Ofsted is deeply unpopular with many teachers, who perceive Estyn inspections to be box ticking exercises with unfairness built in and no reflection of how well a school is really performing.)

Nia was Chair of the Carmarthenshire Youth Project in the 1990s and is a founding member of a local Women’s Aid organisation.

Nia definitely knows about the neglect and abuse of disadvantaged people by the statutory services.

Nia publicly declared herself to be lesbian in a media interview in 2016. However, back at the dawn of time, Nia was married. Her then husband was a social worker. Presumably he lived and worked in west Wales like she did. The west Wales where a paedophile ring operated in the social services. The west Wales where Mark Drakeford also worked as a social worker. The west Wales which is just by Pembrokeshire, where the Gibbons twins grew up who were banged up for years in Broadmoor as teenagers on the grounds that they wouldn’t speak to anyone but each other and then claimed to be prostitutes (see post ‘One Dangerous Fucker’). The twin whom the Top Doctors hated most died ‘from the effects of her medication’ days before she was due to be finally released.

Nia, would you like to tell us the real reason why those girls were incarcerated and give your ex-husband a nudge to encourage him to speak up as well? Perhaps old Drakeford would like to tell all too.

Nia joined the Labour Party in 1981 and is a member of the NUT and USDAW (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers). She has been the Secretary of the Carmarthenshire County Labour Party, was elected as a Councillor for Carmarthen Town Council in 1987, became Sheriff in 1997 and then Mayor in 1998.

Corruption in Carmarthenshire County Council has spawned a great deal of citizen blogging in west Wales.

So Nia has been in a position for years to raise concerns about those kids in west Wales. She hasn’t said a thing and didn’t even back in the mid-80s when the story of the Gibbons’ twins became known internationally and the paedophiles’ friend Marjorie Wallace built herself a whole new career at their expense.

When Nia became an MP, she found yet another friend with whom she could have raised the matter of June and Jennifer Gibbons or indeed the other kids who suffered at the hands of Nia’s husband’s and Drakeford’s colleagues – Harriet Harman! Nia was Harman’s PPS when Harman was Minister for Women and Equalities. But some Wimmin are of course more equal than others.

And I looked from pig to man and from man to pig and from pig to man again and from Nia to Harriet and from Harriet to Drakeford and from Drakeford to Lesley Griffiths and from Lesley Griffiths to Jane Hutt and then to Brian Gibbons and to Julie Morgan and even to dear departed old Rhodri himself and it was impossible to tell the difference in so far as the whole bloody lot of them had concealed and/or ignored a paedophile gang who murdered witnesses.

Nia was part of the mass shadow front bench resignation in June 2016 in an attempt to bring Jeremy Corbyn down because the resigners thought that he wasn’t going to win a General Election and none of them would ever be in Gov’t. If you’ve got the sort of talents that Nia has obviously you don’t just want to waste time merely serving your constituents, particularly if they’re living with the legacy of a paedophile gang that you’re keeping quiet about. Nia was one of many who changed her mind about Jeremy when it looked as though he was rather more popular than they thought and by Oct 2016 she was back on the shadow front bench as Defence Spokesperson, entertaining the nation because it was obvious that she didn’t have a clue what she was talking about and disagreed with Jeremy over defence policy anyway.

Nia was named and shamed in the 2009 Parliamentary election expenses scandal and was ordered to repay over 4k in wrongly claimed mortgage interest relief. Then she ended up in trouble again for breaching Parliamentary rules regarding the use of Commons stationery for political campaigning.

Nia owns a property in Llanelli, has a home in London and a smallholding in Carmarthenshire – for which she has received Welsh Gov’t funding under the Tir Gofal scheme.

Nia’s official website is currently plastered in NHS campaigning material. One notice urges people to write to NHS Wales to insist that the South Wales Major Trauma Centre is established at Swansea not Cardiff, for the benefit of her constituents. Nia – I know that everyone gets pissed off with everything being in Cardiff, but that probably is the best place for a Major Trauma Centre serving south Wales, just on the basis of demography, transport links and geography. It might be more convenient for your constituents to have the Centre near them, but it isn’t convenient for anyone else.

There are major problems at the University Hospital in Cardiff, but there are at Swansea as well, so Nia would be doing everyone a favour if she spoke up about the dire state of the NHS rather than demanding machines that go ping near her constituency.

Not that Nia shows any indication at all of raising  concerns about the serious problems in the NHS – her website also explains how she is ‘fighting for Prince Philip Hospital’. Nia wants assurances that services will remain at Prince Philip Hospital. Prince Philip Hospital has been the site of a number of very serious scandals involving patient harm and deaths and was also the centre of the very sad business involving Sian Caiach.

Sian Caiach was an orthopaedic surgeon who worked at the Prince Philip Hospital and reported fraudulent activity on the part of some of her colleagues to the Welsh Audit Office – Top Doctors at the Prince Philip were using NHS resources for private patients. Although the Welsh Audit Office found Sian’s allegations to be correct, she was suspended, remained suspended for many years and was eventually sacked and struck off. One of the Top Doctors committing the fraud was promoted, the other continued to practice.

Where were all the people who ‘love the NHS’, who bang on about strong women or their admiration of women who succeed in male dominated professions when Sian was targeted? They were nowhere to be seen.

In 2015 Sian asked the then Health Minister Mark Drakeford to address the issue of NHS Top Doctors exploiting the NHS and its patients in order to personally benefit from private practice. Left-leaning Drakeford who loves the NHS and state-provided welfare services more than anyone else on the planet didn’t ever quite get to grips with that one.

Nia’s local Health Board Hywel Dda is another that is on its knees after years of mismanagement. Nia tells us that ‘I will be keeping a close eye on the situation’. If Nia really wanted advice about the NHS all she needs to do is ask for the opinion of a fellow smallholder in Camarthenshire, Sian Caiach.

The Welsh political blog Jac O The North has recently asked questions about one of Nia’s proteges, Tonia Antoniazzi. Tonia campaigned for Nia and is now MP for the Gower, having been elected in 2017. As Jac’s blog mentioned, Tonia only joined the Labour Party in 2014, so that is rapid progression.

Tonia is from Burry Port, the territory of corrupt Top Doctor Prof Linford Rees who used his medical and film/TV network in south Wales and London to keep the lid on the wrongdoing of Dafydd and the paedophiles (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’). Tonia went to Gorseinon College, then to Exeter University and then to Cardiff University to do her PGCE. Like Nia, she was a language teacher and before her election she was Head of Languages at Bryngwyn School, Llanelli. Which is somewhat inconsistent with Tonia’s claim to have been reliant on the foodbank. Foodbanks will be running out of food for people who’ve had their benefits unlawfully stopped with all these nurses and teachers raiding the supplies.

Tonia’s USP in media interviews is that she used to play for Wales in the Women’s Rugby team.

Tonia seems quite well connected re Welsh politics – one of her brothers is married to Helen Bradley who was formerly Head of News and Research for Plaid Cymru and is now Strategic Communications Lead at Chwarae Teg, the ‘equalities charity’ established by paedophiles’ friend Jane Hutt.

There are two other Antoniazzis who wield a great deal of power in Wales, but I do not know if they are relatives of Tonia – there are a number of families called Antoniazzi in south Wales. Whether they are relatives of Tonia or not, they are worth a mention.

One of these people is Dr Manon Antoniazzi who from Jan 2017 has been Chief Exec and Clerk to the National Assembly, the most senior Assembly Commission employee ie the Principal Accounting Officer. When Manon was appointed she stated that she would ‘champion the Assembly’s reputation within Wales and beyond’. Before Manon was appointed Chief Exec and Clerk, she was Director of Culture, Sport and Tourism for the Welsh Gov’t. In 2016, Sport Wales, a Welsh Gov’t-sponsored body that advises Ministers on sporting matters and also distributes National Lottery funding in Wales, found itself in meltdown. Allegations of conflict of interest and nepotism regarding the awarding of contracts were made – although an investigation by Deloitte later cleared them of wrongdoing. However the Board was accepted to be dysfunctional and the Chairman and Vice-Chair were suspended.

Manon has also been Chief Exec of Visit Wales and before that she had worked for the BBC, S4C and Prince Charles.

Before she  married, Manon was Manon Williams – her sister Ffion is married to William Hague, the man who orchestrated the cover-up of the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal which was the Waterhouse Inquiry. Ffion met Hague when she was working as a civil servant in the Welsh Office, along with all the other civil servants in the Welsh Office who had spent years concealing the abuse and deaths of kids in care and psych patients in north Wales.

Manon was said to have secured the post of Chief Exec and Clerk to the Assembly following a ‘rigorous recruitment process’.

In 2014 Wales Online covered Manon’s wedding to John Antoniazzi. The ceremony was quite exclusive, there were just 18 guests there including Ffion and William Hague, who was at the time Foreign Secretary. So Manon hasn’t disowned them for concealing a paedophile ring who murdered their victims and witnesses.

Manon and John were married at Lake Como in Italy, one of the most expensive destinations in Europe – Wales Online explained that they were regulars at Lake Como. The romance of it all! A world away from being battered, raped, declared insane and illegally imprisoned in Dafydd’s dungeon…

Manon and John held a wedding party at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Linford Rees’s famous daughter actress Angharad Rees held an honorary position at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

I have heard a little bit about Ffion and William’s wedding as well. I was told that the man who conducted the ceremony was the father of a truly loathed theologian who used to work at Bangor University, Catrin Haf Williams. The person who told me this had been a theology student at Bangor and had achieved popularity and fame by successfully suing Catrin Haf. Catrin Haf had organised a field trip to the Middle East and told the students that it was obligatory but she would keep the cost as low as possible. She then booked everyone into a very expensive hotel because she wanted to stay there herself and had been offered a substantial discount on her own room if she booked all the students in there as well. The students were forced into penury because of this and they had all had such a bellyful of her intimidation and unpleasantness that the person I knew made a stand and sued her.

Catrin Haf’s partner in crime was her boss Prof Densil Morgan. Shortly after the student won his case against Catrin, Densil brought ridiculous disciplinary charges against the student which was very obviously a revenge attack. The student transferred to Aber to finish his degree – he was not the only person who claimed to have been targeted by Catrin Haf and Densil and forced out of the dept. There were also allegations that Densil was having words in the ears of influential people to prevent students to whom he had taken a dislike from being ordained – Densil is a Nonconformist Minister.

It was Densil who wrote a glowing tribute to J.E. Daniel online. J.E. Daniel was a theologian, Minister and Chairman of Plaid Cymru, 1939-43. He was the father of Huw Daniel, the corrupt judge who was involved in an attempt by the Hergest Unit to frame and imprison me for a serious offence (see post ‘Interesting Happenings In The Legal System’). J.E. Daniel went to Friars School of course.

Perhaps Catrin Haf’s finest hour was the occasion on which she was faced with a distressed student who wanted no more involvement with the thugs of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team – Catrin told the student that if she didn’t accept an appointment with the CMHT, she’d call security and have the student thrown out of the building. Catrin Haf was fully aware of the many serious complaints that students had made about Keith Fearns and co, including threats of violence towards students.

Catrin and Densil had a colleague, Prof Eryl Davies, whom they treated very badly. Eryl never conducted himself in the way that they did, but back in the 1980s Eryl knew some of what was happening in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and he also knew about the drunken lecherous Gordon Farley from the Agriculture Dept sexually harassing the students (see post ‘Not Seen Since The 80s – Carwyn’).

Catrin Haf announced at one point that Bangor wasn’t good enough for her and she was off to Oxford, but unfortunately she returned after less than two years on the grounds that Oxford was full of gits. A mole maintained that Catrin Haf had simply got back what she had given out.

Bangor was mercifully relieved of Catrin and Densil when they relocated to Trinity St David’s University Lampeter, although everybody certainly felt for those in peril at Lampeter. After a few months we heard that Densil and Catrin were up to their usual tricks and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth at Lampeter.

To return to Manon and John Antoniazzi. John Antoniazzi spent 25 years as a senior partner for Deloitte, heading audit for Wales. When he married Manon, John was Chairman of Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone. Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone was established in 2011 and John was Chairman for three years. Edwina Hart, the then Economy Minister, described the Enterprise Zone as aiming to attract ‘financial and professional services firms’. John was advising the Welsh Gov’t on the matter.

Regular readers of this blog will know that I have rather more respect for Edwina than for the other Health Ministers in the Welsh Gov’t because she did try very hard to challenge the paedophiles’ friends in the NHS in north Wales. She was subjected to an all out hate campaign co-ordinated by the BMA and eventually stepped down as Health Minister, although I had provided her with enough info to have Martin Jones and Elfed Roberts, the former CEO and Chair of the North West Wales NHS Trust, arrested. I am fairly sure that Edwina was compromised by her previous trade union activism. She is a member of both TGWU and AMICUS and was Chair of the Wales TUC, as was her husband Bob Hart. The union movement has concealed criminal activity and wrongdoing in the NHS and social services on a grand scale for many years. I know how the paedophiles’ friends operate – they blackmail, bribe and smear people and they’ll do it to anyone under all circumstances, including to those who have previously extracted them from the slurry. I very much suspect that Edwina was faced with this, which was why she eventually backed down in the face of the loud squealing from the paedophiles’ friends. I remain grateful that Edwina did at least try.

However, Edwina does seem to have been involved in some less than fair and transparent activities re the Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone when she was Economy Minister. The successes of the Enterprise Zone included the revamping of parts of Cardiff and it was boasted that prestigious companies had ‘been attracted’ to the Tiger economy that was central Cardiff and were ‘bringing jobs’ and ‘investing’. One such success was the arrival of the Business Operations Centre of Deloitte – the former company of John Antoniazzi, the Chairman of the Enterprise Zone.

Among all the talk of investing and bringing jobs, there are clues that the Welsh Gov’t itself was giving these ‘investors’ a lot of money in return for their ‘investment’. I know that this is how Govt’s often tempt businesses to locate to various regions, but there were allegations that Edwina was making decisions regarding as to whom to give dosh on rather questionable grounds.

Edwina utilised the talents of an unpaid advisor, David Goldstone. Goldstone is a very rich man but reassured everyone that he was a selfless old boy at heart and just wanted to help the taxpayer. How one does that by giving large amounts of their money to very rich businesspeople he did not explain. Goldstone made serious money back in the 1970s and has been Chairman of both Cardiff and Swansea City football clubs. Among other things he was founder and Chief Exec of the property firm Regalian, the owner of Lands End and a Board member of Cardiff Airport, which was famously purchased by the Welsh Gov’t in 2013. The Chair of the Board of Cardiff Airport was Lord David Rowe-Beddoe, the ‘Monaco-based businessman’ who was Chair of the famously disreputable WDA and who was involved in the transfer of many millions of taxpayers money into the pockets of a small number of already wealthy people as  result of the development of Cardiff Bay (see post ‘Corruption Bay Special’). Goldstone is also the hon Vice-President of the Royal Albert Hall. Goldstone is an elderly man now and although press interviews with him provide much info about his early life, wax lyrical about his days as Mr Big in Welsh football, talk about how he lives in Mayfair but when he’s in Cardiff he crashes out in the Hilton and how people still flock to him because he’s a lovely old bugger who’s such good company, there is a veil drawn over his career before he became an ‘entrepreneur’. We are simply told that Goldstone was a London based ‘commercial lawyer’.

Football is best known at present for massive levels of corruption at national and international levels and the recent revelations regarding the sexual abuse of boys, sometimes by well known coaches.

Martin Jones has spent years involving himself with junior football clubs in north Wales and I never understood why, because he doesn’t have an altruistic bone in his body. Keith Fearns has for years managed a ladies football team in Gwynedd and no-one has ever believed this to be a benign activity.

People do not make the sort of dosh that David Goldstone has made by prioritising the needs of the taxpayer.

One of Goldstones’s triumphs was his organising a £15 million deal in 2013 through which the Welsh Gov’t acquired offices owned by property developer J.R. Smart in the Capital Quarter scheme. J.R. Smart’s son now works for J.R. Smart, but before he did so, he worked for the Bank of Wales, which was not a bank but an organisation run by a spiv who sold poor people things at high rates of interest. That high profile paedophile the now disgraced former Speaker of the House George Thomas, aka Lord Tonypandy, was involved with the Bank of Wales.

So there was obviously a great deal of money sloshing about in the coffers of the Welsh Gov’t which was available for thrashing out deals with some very rich people.

In 2015 BBC News Wales ran stories regarding the collapse of a hi-tech company called Ideoba. Ideoba was run by Adam Price – now a Plaid AM – and a US finance expert, Andrew Auerbach. Ideoba’s collapse was attributed to the refusal of the Welsh Gov’t to provide it with a loan of just 150k. This is not to suggest that Ideoba was an unsustainable ramshackle affair – information available suggests that it had a sound basis, that it was a small but expanding company and that other investors had come forward and were prepared to invest if the Welsh Gov’t would provide the loan of 150k. The Welsh Gov’t refused, Ideoba collapsed, employees were made redundant and Adam Price personally lost 70k.

Ideoba was the sort of business that the Welsh Gov’t was telling people that it wanted to encourage and support. Instead it allowed the company to collapse for the sake of a 150k loan – whilst Deloitte, who just happened to have connections with the Chairman of the Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone and Economy Minister so close that the phrase ‘conflict of interest’ screams loudly at us all, picked up massive quantities of Gov’t money for doing the Welsh Gov’t the favour of opening a business operations centre, which would no doubt be highly profitable for Deloitte. Deloitte picks up numerous Gov’t contracts and whilst researching for this blog I have constantly come across people formerly of Deloitte who have been given given senior roles in public services for which they are very obviously not qualified.

Andrew R.T. Davies, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives, alleged that Edwina Hart had broken the Ministerial code with regard to the consideration of the loan to Ideabo. It was David Goldstone who advised against a loan being made to Ideabo, yet Goldstone was employed to advise only on property. It was revealed that Goldstone had been involved in discussions about the loan with Edwina and her officials and that he had been given commercially sensitive information that should not have been made available to him. Most damningly, Adam Price’s business partner Andrew Auerbach alleged that he had been told by Goldstone himself that Ideabo had been refused the loan because Price had announced his intentions to stand as  Plaid candidate in the forthcoming Assembly election. Goldstone is a member of the Labour Party.

Improper conduct was strongly denied by the Welsh Gov’t and Goldstone but it was noticed that Goldstone’s contract with the Welsh Gov’t was not renewed in April 2015. Ideabo collapsed in April 2015.

There were constant accusations that Edwina and Goldstone were members of a ‘Swansea Mafia’ – Goldstone was orginally from Swansea, although he made his fortune in London. Goldstone maintained that allegations of being part of a Swansea Mafia were all nonsense and that he hadn’t known Edwina until he found himself sitting opposite her when they were both on the Board of the Wales Millennium Centre. Goldstone explained that she told him that she was from Swansea so he made a point of getting to know her.

Which rather suggests that influential people with connections to Swansea make a point of networking with each other.

Some years ago I did hear of an allegation that Edwina had facilitated Welsh Gov’t funding for someone based on Anglesey in a deal so sordid that even I am not going to give details here – it involved the sort of thing that I need to have witnessed myself or at least have correlated before I publish it. The info came from a community activist who, like many others, were tearing their hair out at the levels of corruption that they were encountering.

The thing that intrigues but worries me is that David Goldstone was appointed a ‘property advisor’ to Edwina whilst she was Health Minister.

Goldstone has also been and might still be a property advisor to the Wales Rugby Union. Tasker Watkins, the one time ‘Greatest Living Welshman’, Presiding Judge of the corrupt Wales and Chester Circuit and great friend to paedophiles and criminal Top Doctors (see post ‘Corruption Bay Special’) was President of the Welsh Rugby Union, 1993-04.

Goldstone has been Chairman of the children’s charity the Thomas Coram Foundation. Many of those who concealed organised child abuse in north Wales and elsewhere have been/are involved with Coram.

It was David Goldstone who built the MI6 HQ in Vauxhall. One would have thought that MI6 would have chosen a property developer with rather less questionable contacts to build their house. But then they knew all about Dafydd and the paedophiles anyway and were key to ensuring that they were neither stopped or prosecuted.

To return to John Antoniazzi. He stepped down from the role of Chair of Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone in 2015 and stated that he would be ‘pursuing new business interests and charitable commitments’.

John Antoniazzi is Chairman of Premier Forest Ltd and a former non-executive Board member of Go Compare. He is a Trustee and Treasurer of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff and Chairman of their Cornerstone Project. John was the founder Chairman of Fareshare Cymru.

John Antoniazzi has ‘supported the work of the NSPCC in Wales’. The NSPCC provided the ‘Helpline’ that was set up at the end of 1991 to ‘support’ the by then adults who had been victims of the north Wales paedophile gang when some of them were eventually put on trial. The Helpline was staffed and managed by the colleagues of the paedophiles (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake’). Not many people sought support from the Helpline, but one person who did was found dead.

John is a Trustee of London Music Masters, which provides music tuition for children.

John is also involved with the cancer charity Maggie’s.

John Antoniazzi is the Independent Board Member for Estates on the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The Independent Board Member for the Third sector is a frequent star of this blog, Sara Moseley, Director of MIND Cymru. Professor Elizabeth Treasure is the Independent Board Member for Universities. Treasure caused havoc among the Top Doctors when she was a senior manager at Cardiff Medical School but so many of the Top Doctors there were completely corrupt that I never worked out if she was sinner or sinned against. She is now VC of Aberystwyth University, another institution which has provided a home for many a paedophiles’ friend (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Associate Board Members include Tony Young, Director of Social Services for Cardiff Council and Phil Evans, Director of Social Services for Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board employ Richard Penketh as a consultant gynaecologist. Penketh worked at St George’s Hospital Medical School and was a pathological sexual harasser who managed to have sex with another member of staff in a lab during working hours. Then he failed some professional exams and St George’s stated that they would do what they did with all really bad doctors – they’d ‘send him to Wales’. And they did – and then paedophiles’ friend Brian Gibbons gave Penketh an award for excellence.

Another Antoniazzi also works for the Assembly, Jon Antoniazzi, the Director of Policy, Legislation and Innovation at the Office of Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. That Commissioner is one Sophie Howe.

When I was researching Tonia Antoniazzi, I noticed that the MP for the Gower who preceded her was a Tory, Byron Davies, who did originally come from the Gower but he had spent his adult life in London – futhermore he had been a senior detective in the Met. Davies was in the Met when they all behaved like something out of the TV programme Life On Mars – whilst there was rampant corruption and the organised sexual abuse of children was ignored and actively concealed if complaints involved public figures. Davies only returned to the Gower in 2011 after he retired – where he successfully stood for election to the Welsh Assembly. He remained an AM until 2017. Police officers often do interesting things after they retire, but nonetheless this did seem a bit odd. Then I read a Wales Online article from 2011 profiling the new AMs and something so obvious had happened that it must have been visible from outer space. In 2011 the Assembly received an influx of AMs who had concealed the abuse of children in care. Before readers hurl accusations of conspiracy theories, just bear with me.

By spring 2011, questions about the possible existence of a Westminster Paedophile Ring would not go away. There was also much discontent in north Wales – I had written to a number of people stating that I intended to publish now that I had possession of the most incriminating documents and that I would be calling for a Pubic Inquiry into the conduct of the mental health services. The Top Doctors and paedophiles’ friends were going apeshit with regard to the arrival at the Betsi Board of a CEO and a number of other senior managers who were challenging their reign of terror. Furthermore, the biggest sex offender and Top Doctors’ friend of the lot, Jimmy Savile, was very obviously on his last legs. Once he was dead, it was inevitable that someone would go public on what he had done, because in UK law one cannot libel the dead. Savile had visited Bryn Estyn and been involved with abuse there.

Now just consider some of the new faces in the Assembly in 2011, along with the senior officer from the Met:

Julie Morgan. Former social worker and Deputy Director of Barnardo’s who kept quiet about child abuse. Wife of Rhodri, whose whole career was predicated on concealing the paedophiles – and who had by now left the Assembly himself.

Antoinette Sandbach – a London barrister who’s father was a key figure in covering up the activities of Dafydd and the paedophiles and whose grandmother also knew what was going on (see post ‘News Round Up, 19 January 2018). Sandbach – like the man from the Met – took the opportunity to bag a seat at Westminster before too long.

Mick Antinow. A lawyer and senior partner in Thompsons, a company that represents trade unions. Antinow began training in 1980. He worked at Thompsons throughout the years that trade unions afforded full protection to abusers. In north Wales some of the abusers were union reps. David Williams, who ‘trained’ at the North Wales Hospital and its dungeon, became the General Secretary for COHSE (see post ‘A Very COHSE Relationship With Some Very Nasty People’).

John Dixon. Had been a Cardiff Councillor for twelve years, whilst abuse had occurred in Cardiff and was a member of the Care Council for Wales – which was packed with paedophiles’ friends and completely failed to protect children and other clients (see post ‘Still Lost In Care’). Dixon was disqualified from office shortly after election because AMs are not permitted to sit on the Care Council for Wales.

Aled Roberts. A solicitor from Wrexham throughout the years that the children in care in Wrexham – primarily in Bryn Estyn and nearby Bryn Alyn – were horrifically abused and everyone in the legal profession and criminal justice system ignored it. Aled had also been a Wrexham Councillor, Leader of Wrexham Council and Mayor of Wrexham. Wrexham Council ran Bryn Estyn. One of my friends went to Aled after he had been unlawfully refused treatment by the mental health services and had ended up paying for private treatment abroad. Aled took three months to reply and said that there was nothing he could do.

Aled was also disqualified from office shortly after he was elected. The rest of the Assembly voted to reinstate him.

Gwyn Price. The former Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council – he’d been in post throughout those glorious years when Ron Davies with his moments of madness and hobby of looking for badgers was MP and AM for Caerphilly.

Mike Hedges. Graduate of both Swansea and Cardiff Universities. Councillor on Swansea City Council from 1989 and Councillor on City and County of Swansea Council from 1995. Vice-Chair of Council’s Scrutiny Committee. WLGA spokesman for Social Services. Swansea Social Services were reputed to be dreadful for years but it was denied. Until baby Aaron Gilbert was murdered in 2005. Hedges was non-exec Director of Swansea NHS Trust, 1999-05.

Keith Davies. A teacher, schools inspector and Director of Education in Mid-Glamorgan and Carmarthenshire – paedophile rings operated in both areas. In May 2012, Davies was the centre of a scandal and was investigated for bringing the Assembly into disrepute. He had crawled into the St David’s Hotel at 4-45am pissed, in the company of his ‘female guest’ who was also pissed. Keith’s friend was described as ‘foul mouthed’ and hurled abuse at and threatened hotel staff. Keith attempted to scarper without paying the hotel bill. That was one hell of a night out for a 71 year old man who was married to someone else.

David Rees. Succeeded paedophiles’ friend and corrupt Top Doctor Brian Gibbons. Rees is a member of UNITE and convenor of the UNITE Group of AMs. The UNITE that supported and provided free legal advice to abusers.

Simon Thomas. Aber graduate and was Assistant Curator at the National Library of Wales – so well connected to the old fossils (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’). Simon’s father-in-law’s father was the Rev T. Alban Davies, a Welsh preacher and early member of Plaid, so he will have personally known the old fossils J.E. Daniel and Dafydd’s mate Saunders Lewis. Thomas was Policy and Research Officer for Taff-Ely Borough Council, 1992-94. So Thomas arrived there in the aftermath of the Ely Bread Riots.

Lindsay Whittle. Councillor on Caerphilly County Borough Council from 1976 and Council leader 1999-04 and 2008-11. He remained a Councillor after he became an AM. Well the more fingers in the more pies that Ron Davies’s mates have, the better. Caerphilly Council have recently been under investigation for financial misconduct dating back years.

Mark Drakeford. Need I say more?

Jenny Rathbone. Former Islington Councillor, journalist and member of the family who established a charity that supplied the paedophiles with help when some of them were actually caught (see post ‘The Mentor’).

Julie James. Barrister and former civil servant. Worked as a policy lawyer for the London Borough of Camden – Tessa Jowell’s manor and the site of much abuse and neglect of kids in care and psych patients. Also was Assistant Chief Exec of the City and County of Swansea Council.

Llyr Huws Gruffydd. Described one of Dafydd’s dodgy ‘nursing homes’ for people ‘with PTSD’ as a ‘beacon of excellence’. Stated that a psych patient complaining of mistreatment when in the Heddfan Unit was ‘in the right place’ after having a word with the abusive Angel on duty. Days later the patient was discharged and refused further care and support. He ended up suicidal and sleeping rough. Llyr stopped replying to e mails about this patient’s case.

Suzy Davies. Solicitor who had mentored young offenders and worked on children’s and community projects.

There were two other AMs in the 2011 intake who were too young to have been assisting the paedophile gang of north Wales in its hayday, but who definitely have worked with people who did help them – Vaughan Gething, another solicitor who worked for Thompsons and Ken Skates from Wrexham, who has spent his whole life and career surrounded by lying criminals and people in denial.

The arrival of that crew in the Assembly as the anxiety levels of the paedophiles’ friends was going through the roof and when another high level cover-up might have  been called for was not a coincidence.

George Osborne Enters The Picture

Yesterday’s post ‘The Evolution of a Drugs Baron’ detailed the extraordinary sequence of events that led to Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and his fellow travellers in CAIS constructing themselves as ‘substance abuse experts’ and consequently being handed the remit for substance abuse ‘services’ over huge swathes of Wales, despite their very questionable track record. I also detailed the ‘oral evidence’ that Clive Wolfendale, the Chief Exec of CAIS, gave to Parliament’s Welsh Affairs Committee in 2012, which very obviously seemed to be a pitch for CAIS to be given the remit for the ‘care’ of military veterans. That was five years ago and naturally I wondered if Clive’s case for the care and rehabilitation of veterans had resulted in money flowing into the coffers of CAIS yet. My co-researcher has now e mailed me the CAIS reports and financial statements for the years 2014/15 and 2015/16, which answers some questions but of course raises many more. He has also sent me a few other useful links.

First, I need to (attempt to) clarify something regarding yesterday’s post. When I was giving the lowdown on the shameful histories of some of the CAIS Trustees, I speculated that Cledwyn Williams was probably one of the people named in the 1996 Jillings Report into the abuse of children whilst in the care of Clwyd Social Services. I’ve been reading the Jillings Report in detail this morning in preparation for a future post and I note that Cledwyn Williams is not the person that I was thinking of. So I am still no wiser as to which social services it was that Cledwyn played a leading role in until 1996, when he was appointed Director of Conwy Social Services. As Cledwyn himself is deliberately vague about this in his biography on the CAIS website, it does suggest that he doesn’t really want to shout too loudly about which organisation it was that he worked for – so I would not be surprised if it was Clwyd, particularly as Clwyd County Council was dissolved in 1996 after the admission of appalling long-standing sexual abuse and cruelty throughout their children’s services. Since yesterday I’ve discovered that Cledwyn is actually Robert Cledwyn Williams, just to add to the confusion. (Of course he may have been named in the Jillings Report nonetheless, because so many names were redacted when that Report was finally released.)

I’ll put the confusion regarding Cledwyn to one side for the present and move on to the purpose of today’s post, that is the discussion of the documents that my co-researcher has sent me. The documents do indeed confirm that since Clive appeared in front of the Welsh Affairs Committee, CAIS have hit the jackpot where funding for the delivery of ‘services’ to veterans and their families are concerned, those services being ‘Change Step’ and ‘Listen In’. As with all ‘services’ provided by CAIS, they are delivered by volunteers, with just a back-up skeleton staff. The CAIS accounts dated 20/4/15 show that they’d secured and begun to receive funding from the Ministry of Defence for ‘Change Step’ and ‘Listen In’ and had begun delivering services. The CAIS report for 2014/15 tells us that ‘Change Step’ was launched on 31 May 2014 by their ‘patron’ Brigadier Gerard Wheeler. It was set up with funding from the Ministry of Defence LIBOR fund which provided funding for two years of pan-Wales peer mentoring. That was the fund that was much publicised by Cameron’s Gov’t, the money coming from the fines that were levied on the banks for attempting to manipulate LIBOR. Nearly £1 million was given to CAIS. The CAIS report tells us that ‘1000 veterans and their families have been supported’ by ‘veteran peer mentors’ in terms of their mental health issues, loneliness, welfare and addiction problems’. Now £1 million quid would buy an awful lot, particularly if the work was being largely carried out by volunteers. Yet CAIS give very scant details of what this £1 million has funded. There is a fleeting reference at one point in the report to people being involved in ‘clearing war graves’ and setting up a website in respect of genealogy, but keeping graves tidy and researching one’s family history can be done at the weekend and needs neither £1 million pounds nor peer guides to do it. So where did that £1 million go? The mystery deepens when one takes a look at the CAIS report for 2015/16. This states that George Osborne, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, gave ‘Change Step’ another £434,659 from the LIBOR fund in the Budget, ‘to support the families and carers of veterans in north Wales’. This generous donation from Osborne was also featured in a news report by BBC News Wales. The BBC explains that Osborne had ‘saved’ ‘Change Step’ after it had ‘run out of funding’ after having been ‘unsuccessful’ in bidding for further funding and that ’29 jobs were at risk’. The date on that BBC News Wales report is 16 March 2016. But my co-researcher has sent me a link to a list of all the projects whose funding under the Armed Forces Libor Fund Successful Tranche 3 Projects was announced in George Osborne’s Budget – the £434,659 to CAIS is listed there. But George Osborne made this announcement on the 15 October 2013. That was BEFORE the launch of ‘Change Step’ and ‘Listen In’ in May 2014 on the basis of the £1 million from the MoD Armed Forces LIBOR fund. But CAIS didn’t announce this until 2016 and stated that it was successful follow on funding from a project that had run out of money and that it would provide ‘peer support’ for 800 veterans. This is so confusing that I’ll go through it all again. In Oct 2013 George Osborne announced that CAIS would be awarded nearly half a million from the MoD LIBOR fund. At about the same time CAIS received nearly £1 million from – the MoD LIBOR fund, to set up ‘Step Change’ and ‘Listen In’ and launched these in May 2014. So CAIS received TWO lots of funding at the same time, for the same project, but announced one lot of that funding as ‘follow on’ funding more than two years after George Osborne had publicly announced it. Furthermore when the £1 million lot of funding was announced, it was stated to be for a TWO YEAR pan-Wales programme. So why were CAIS claiming to have run out of funds for the project before the end of two years and to have been ‘unsuccessful’ in further bidding? And why did they not only make multiple applications to the LIBOR fund for the same project, but sit on one load of dosh for more than two years, only to then misrepresent it on a BBC News Wales feature? Furthermore, the £1 million was for a pan-Wales project – yet there’s only details of north Wales based ‘support’ given. And how the hell had Dafydd manage to spend a million quid in a year on tidying gravestones and making a website featuring family histories anyway? And what were these 29 jobs allegedly at risk? If ‘Change Step’ utilises ‘peer support’, who were these 29 paid people and what were they doing – particularly if the only outcomes that could be boasted about were the tidy graves and the family histories website. As with everything involving CAIS, NONE of this adds up. Neither was George Osborne doing his homework. Not only did he hand over a huge quantity of money to a charity containing a number of Trustees who were involved in the concealing of a paedophile gang – one had even been named in the Waterhouse Report as having done so – but they were given two lots of money for the same work. If indeed clearing some gravestones and researching family histories can be classified as ‘work’. This was a charity whose Chief Exec in 2012 could not give any figures at all regarding how many veterans that they had among their ‘clients’ or produce any firm evidence regarding the ‘need’ for a support service for veterans. Yet Cameron’s Gov’t gave them the best part of one and a half million quid just over a year later. This is much, much worse than ‘Kid’s Company’.

Interested readers – or indeed the fraud squad – might like to ask the CAIS accountants a few questions about all this. The CAIS ‘Independent Auditors’ are listed as Williams Denton Cyf, 13 Trinity Square, Llandudno. The CAIS registered office and principal address is at 12 Trinity Square Llandudno. Someone might need to speak to CAIS’s bankers about this as well. They are Barclays Bank Plc, 84 Mostyn Street, Llandudno. Finally, CAIS employ something called ‘Honorary Solicitors’ that perhaps could shed light on these very dodgy business practices. They are John Owens Solicitors, Unit 13, Ffordd Richard Davies, St Asaph Business Park, St Asaph.

But inexplicably pouring money into CAIS coffers to provide ‘peer support’ for veterans is not the only way that Cameron helped Dafydd et al. I mentioned in yesterday’s post that CAIS are receiving money from the DWP. The CAIS reports explain why. Since October 2012 CAIS have been contracted by the DWP to deliver the Rehab JobFit work programme (the main DWP unemployment scheme) in north west Wales and since 20 April 2015, CAIS have been delivering this in Wrexham. Their record regarding this programme is utterly mediocre. The 2014/15 report tells us that out of the 564 unemployed individuals ‘supported’ by CAIS, only 206 secured employment. For the year 2015/16, CAIS ‘supported’ 345 people, of whom 259 found work. But being crap is no barrier to CAIS. They have established a ‘training’ enterprise, ‘Crew-IT’, after ‘obtaining funds’ of course. Crew-IT claims to offer training for work in hospitality and catering, providing ‘on the job’ training in their very own Porters Coffee Shop and Bistro, Colwyn Bay and Troop Café, Llandudno. (Troop Café was previously known as Caffi CAIS and was a sort of shack that made such a loss that CAIS shut it down and reopened it a few months later as Troop Café. Presumably the new name was a reference to CAIS’s newly acquired expertise in military matters. However CAIS have now reported a ‘poor trading season’ for Troop Café and they are redesigning it as an ‘activity hub’.) In the year 2014/15, out of 24 participants on the ‘training scheme’, 5 secured jobs. In 2015/16, out of 21 participants, there were 11 who secured jobs. So CAIS is not even that successful at training people to work for minimum wage jobs in cafes. But they continue to build on their mediocrity – they have now secured EU funding through the WCVA ‘Active Inclusion Scheme’ and are offering two year training programmes to make people ‘work ready’. One programme, ‘At Your Service’, is directed at the catering and hospitality industry and another, ‘Seeds To Grow’, is directed at horticulture. Out of 413 participants, 45 secured jobs. CAIS have since submitted a pan-Wales application for funding from the EU ‘Out of Work’ scheme to the Welsh Gov’t.

The creativity of CAIS knows no bounds. They are involved in providing ‘support’ for offenders through ‘Jigsaw’ (guess what – Jigsaw is entirely dependent upon volunteers); they provide ‘housing advice’ for the homeless in Wrexham ‘through our partners Shelter’ (although the ‘outcomes’ given simply refer to people having their questions answered rather than people actually securing accommodation); they provide ‘recovery coaching’ enabling people to become ‘work ready’ (out of 668 people, precisely 33 found jobs) and they provide ‘supported accommodation’ in north Wales, Powys and Pembrokeshire (I dread to think what passes for ‘supported accommodation’ with Dafydd’s history of placing mental health patients in run down accommodation where they are neglected and abused). Of course CAIS continue their core business – ‘substance abuse services’ and ‘therapies and interventions’ (please see previous posts regarding CAIS and Parabl for details). CAIS are contracted to provide these by the NHS. CAIS now run something in Cardiff called the Living Room. In one report it states that the Living Room is providing counselling for clergy, ministers of religion and their families and ‘on-going aftercare and psychosocial support’ for GPs in Cardiff no less. So the Top Doctors are securing mental healthcare from this ‘charity’ bankrolled by the taxpayer, whilst their own patients find it nigh-on impossible to obtain care for mental health problems. A number of CAIS initiatives, such as Troop Café, are run as ‘social enterprises’. I am touched to see that although CAIS Social Enterprises Ltd reported a loss in 2014/15, they were nonetheless awarded ‘Conwy Social Enterprise of the Year’ in May 2015.

Readers may be staggered to discover that CAIS, despite having such a hopeless record of delivery, despite such dodgy practices and despite such a lack of expertise, is able to draw down millions in ‘funding’ every year to provide such a plethora of ‘services’. Regular readers will remember how gobsmacked I was when I discovered that CAIS, Chaired by what must be the most abusive, corrupt psychiatrist in the UK, had landed the contract from the Betsi for ‘service user involvement’ (please see posts concerning ‘CANIAD’). But reading the CAIS reports has revealed something even more farcical. CAIS have been running a ‘programme for primary schools’, ‘Don’t Touch – Tell’, to send out ‘keep safe’ messages. Yes, a charity with Trustees who concealed a vicious paedophile gang that operated in north Wales children’s homes for decades causing untold suffering and leading to scores of suspicious deaths, have picked up a contract for ‘safeguarding’ children.

How was any of this ever allowed to happen?

A warning for the future (as if the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal weren’t enough of a warning) – the 2015/16 CAIS report waxes lyrical about the potential for them to pick up more and more contracts and to go into partnership with more and more ‘charities’. They are eyeing up the Royal British Legion and Age Concern, as well as planning on landing more contracts from the DWP. Furthermore I very much doubt that anyone will stop them. The CAIS Trustees have, variously, resigned from previous jobs in the wake of terrible scandals, they’ve been sued, they’ve been named as concealing a paedophile ring – but George Osborne still gave them a million and a half quid. No-one knows what they’ve done with it and there’s bugger all to show for it, but then they weren’t finding anyone jobs yet it didn’t stop the DWP giving them more contracts. I don’t know why Dafydd ever stood as a Plaid candidate. Thatcher’s Gov’t ignored the dreadful abuses that he and Lucille were involved in, Major’s Gov’t covered it all up when the abuses became so public that they couldn’t be ignored any longer and Cameron’s Gov’t covered up the cover up and then gave Dafydd and Lucille millions. What’s Theresa May going to do, give them both peerages? Oh well then they’ll be able to join all the people who were involved in the multiple cover ups who are now in the Lords.

Strong and stable Government anyone?

The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?

Recent posts have mentioned the turf wars taking place in north Wales between rival drug dealers – one such war recently culminating in a murder – and the drugs problem in Wrexham that is causing so much public concern that it hit the wider UK media a few weeks ago. Regular readers will know that the Welsh Gov’t is handing over millions to CAIS, the Third sector organisation, to tackle ‘substance abuse and associated problems’. Readers will also know that the DWP is another body parting with good money to CAIS and that CAIS has now landed the contract for ‘service user involvement’ across the whole of north Wales, after a ‘commissioning process’ that was very obviously designed to ensure that CAIS was the only organisation in a position to secure the contract (please see post ‘The Story Behind £1.5 Million’). CAIS have formed a vehicle called CANIAD to carry out the ‘service user involvement’ and I have already been contacted by someone who has confirmed that CANIAD is not what it pretends to be. In recent years CAIS have expanded and expanded and now have fingers in many pies eg. substance abuse, alcohol abuse, ‘care’ for forces veterans experiencing PTSD, housing, various ‘therapies’, education, training and ‘service user involvement’. It has been common knowledge across north Wales for years that some of the CAIS ‘volunteers’ and ‘peer guides’ are dealing in drugs to the ‘clients’ and at least two people known to me have quipped that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones (the Chair and founder of CAIS) must be the biggest drug dealer in north Wales. So imagine how gobsmacked some of us were when, some years ago, the former Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales, Clive Wolfendale, was appointed Chief Exec of CAIS. Clive has certainly been an asset to CAIS – they have now expanded into south Wales. The other day my co-researcher sent me a most interesting link, namely to the minutes of the oral evidence given to the Welsh Affairs Committee, 7 Feb 2012. The witnesses giving evidence are Mark Lovatt, manager, Blind Veterans UK, Llandudno; Alistair Maxwell, regional manager (Wales), Royal British Legion and Clive Wolfendale, Chief Exec, CAIS. They are giving evidence regarding the provision of services for veterans in Wales. Clive’s comments certainly shine a light on how business is conducted.

Clive introduces himself and then explains that CAIS provides ‘services for people with substance misuse problems across north Wales and Powys’, that CAIS has been around for ‘about thirty years’, that it receives ‘no funding whatsoever’ for the PTSD services that it provides for military veterans and that these are ‘provided as a ‘pro bono’ offering on the back of it’s general charitable remit to support people in need through substance misuse and allied issues’. Wolfendale goes on to mention that there are ‘gaps in provision’ in the statutory services for veterans. (He does not mention that there are gaps in provision for everyone and one reason why the provision in the statutory sector is so bad is that for years Dr Dafydd Alun Jones ran the show in north Wales where the mental health services were concerned and that they were so dysfunctional and so abusive that no good psychiatrist would work there.) Clive states that the landscape has been ‘complicated by issues associated with Forces For Good’. What Clive is referring to here is Forces For Good Ltd, a ‘social enterprise’ for veterans in north Wales whose leading light was one Christopher James O’Neill – he was arrested for fraud and theft, after trying to swindle the Welsh Gov’t out of hundreds of thousands of pounds and then embezzling some of the funds from Forces For Good. Clive claims that there are ‘too many organisations…often with good intent, involving themselves…certainly without proper governance arrangements, so that nobody knows where the money is going…without proper clinical governance in terms of therapies. The multiplicity of therapies is astonishing and there is a lot of dogma attached to that and resistance to change and acceptance which complicates the situation as well…among that a huge number of charities, some are not fit for purpose…’ Let’s look at this in detail.

Clive refers to ‘too many organisations’. Well an awful lot of those organisations past and present have been established by Dafydd himself, although they don’t always have his name above the door. (A lot of people wondered if Dafydd was behind Forces For Good – it had all the hallmarks of Dafydd, a ‘social enterprise’ mopping up huge quantities of money from the Welsh Gov’t, providing ‘help’ for veterans and futhermore all the action seemed to be happening in Llandudno, Dafydd’s HQ.) Indeed, CAIS itself is an umbrella organisation which serves as a front for a plethora of other vehicles – such as CANIAD. This is self-evident from the CAIS website – CAIS now quaintly refer to this multiplicity of organisations as the CAIS ‘family’. Clive refers to organisations in which ‘no-one knows where the money is going’. The question that everyone asks of CAIS is where is the money going? They are receiving millions, but only employ a skeleton staff – nearly all the work is done by volunteers – and the Board of Trustees maintain that they’re not pocketing a penny. So where is the dosh going Dafydd? Now for a real bit of entertainment – Clive stresses the need for ‘proper governance arrangements’. A previous post provided a link to the Board of Trustees of CAIS, but I’ll refresh readers memories here. The Chair is Dr Dafydd Alun Jones. Who illegally imprisoned people in the North Wales Hospital, who sexually exploited patients, who was incapable of telling the truth, who was involved in arrangements with corrupt police officers to have people arrested for crimes that it was known that they had not committed, who was said by addicts to ‘give you anything that you wanted’, who placed his patients in accommodation where they were assaulted and neglected, who had a mistress who was facilitating a paedophile ring and who tried to threaten and then bribe me into dropping my complaints about him (other crimes of Dafydd’s are detailed elsewhere on the blog, that’s just a taster). The Vice-Chair and Trustee of CAIS is Cledwyn Williams. Cledwyn describes himself as being, between 1983 and 1996, ‘Assistant Director, Social Services’, but doesn’t state WHICH social services. His biography then gives the info that he was after that ‘Director of Social Services, Conwy’. I suspect that Cledwyn is the senior manager who was mentioned in the Jillings Report into child abuse in Clwyd Social Services (Clwyd Social Services were dissolved at the same time as the Jillings Report was given to the authorities). That’s the Jillings Report that documented such serious abuse and malpractice that it was withheld for decades and then only published after being heavily redacted. Another Trustee is Lucille Hughes, former Director of Gwynedd Social Services and mistress of Dafydd’s. Lucille was named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in the Social Services but failing to act. Another Trustee is Dr Avril Wayte. She is the clinical director for the Clinical Biochemistry services at the Betsi – services that are alleged to be in chaos with constant serious mistakes being made. Avril is married to Dr Donald Wayte, the retired Home Office pathologist who not only discovered some extraordinary things in his post-mortems, but allowed a schoolboy to accompany him on his duties because he was friends with the boy’s mother and also caused a stir by once announcing to the press that most children who die as a result of cot death have been murdered by their parents – on the basis of no evidence at all. Another Trustee is Dafydd’s son, Dyfrig ap Dafydd. Another one is Brian Smith, who upon retirement ‘worked for the WDA’. That’s the WDA (Welsh Development Agency) that was so mired in scandal and allegations of corruption that it was dismantled. Yet another Trustee is Geoff Simpson, a ‘management accountant in the motor trade’. So far then, we have a corrupt psychiatrist who shagged his patients, his son, his mistress who assisted in the running of a paedophile ring, someone else named in a report into one the worst cases of child abuse in the UK, the wife of a dodgy pathologist, a refugee from a notorious now-defunct Government body that brought Wales into disrepute and a car dealer. PROPER GOVERNANCE ARRANGEMENTS???

Clive condemns the lack of ‘clinical governance’ of therapies, as well as ‘multiplicity of therapies’ and ‘dogma’. Well Clive, when Dafydd was running loose in the NHS, his prescribing was appalling – huge doses of chlorpromazine for everyone no matter what their diagnosis and if they were addicts they got anything that they wanted on request, he was sued by one woman whom he sectioned for a year and diagnosed as having ‘paranoid schizophrenia’ when there was nothing wrong with her and a brief investigation into CAIS’s own offerings reveals what can only be described as a ‘multiplicity of therapies’. As for dogma -Dafydd achieved notoriety in the 90s for taking all the junkies off methadone and replacing that with huge doses of benzodiazepines which resulted in most of them becoming hopelessly addicted. He was told repeatedly that this was both dangerous and bloody stupid but he didn’t waver once. Regarding people who are ‘resistant to change’ – Dafydd, Lucille and Cledwyn are all well into their 80s, presided over the most shameful period of recent history in north Wales ie the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, and still won’t retire.

When Clive is asked by a Committee member what proportion of CAIS’s clients are veterans, Clive makes a guess – and admits that ‘the information systems are not sufficiently robust to be definite’. So CAIS, receiving millions in funding, having been in business for 30 years, has not even conducted a simple count of the number of people to whom they are offering ‘services’ who are veterans – although Clive claims that this is their ‘principle mission’. Clive then speculates at length regarding drug and alcohol use and PTSD, but no figures at all are provided – he then speculates a bit more regarding people ‘self-medicating with alcohol’ ‘in the absence of other therapies’. Well it’s Dafydd’s mates in the mental health services that are not providing the other therapies… Despite Clive’s previous mention of their ‘principle mission’, he goes on to tell the Committee that ‘it isn’t CAIS’s particular focus and never has been, to work with the military…we’d be very pleased to do so’. Of course they would, Dafydd’s spotted a gap in the market and he’s after a few more million.

The Committee moves on to ask the witnesses questions regarding the possibility of a rehabilitation centre for veterans. Clive remarks that such units ‘come and go’ and referred to one called Ty Gwyn in Llandudno that ‘disappeared’ about 8 years ago. Ty Gwyn was owned by Dafydd – it ‘disappeared’ because it was a con. Dafydd charged thousands of pounds a week for what was described to me by a former patient as a shared room in a ‘mediocre boarding house’ – he was sent into Llandudno to buy takeaways because Dafydd couldn’t provide vegetarian food. This ‘patient’ with PTSD never received any ‘therapy’ at all and only actually saw Dafydd when he discharged himself, whereupon Dafydd turned up and recommended that he stay another few weeks. This man was paying for all this himself, but most ‘patients’ there were funded by the NHS. One former nurse from Ty Gwyn who walked out in disgust told me that most of the patients didn’t have PTSD at all, they had drug and alcohol problems, had got into trouble with the law and had checked into Ty Gwyn in order to receive a favourable Court report from Dafydd. Ty Gwyn ‘disappeared’ when the Welsh Gov’t refused to fund anymore ‘placements’ at this money-spinner. Clive goes on to mention a few more ‘places’ that have ‘come and gone’ – again, most of them were established by Dafydd. Clive mentions that people are ‘let down’ when these facilities close – Dafydd is a past master at letting people down, his business model is a medical version of slash and burn agriculture ie. he sets something up, milks it for as much as he can or until the goodwill has expired, then he shuts shop and opens up something else down the road.

At this point Clive arrives at the heart of the matter: ‘a facility with the ability to treat individuals with substance misuse problems, particularly alcoholism, is for my money, almost a necessity…the reason we are finding high numbers of people on our books is the support has not been there at the right time or the right place…Wales is a good place to be doing this sort of work [a residential rehab centre]…we have space, a strong tradition of supporting the military – there are lots of people around who can help – and the environment in terms of the therapies, the space, the mountains and the sea. Veterans find it an attractive place in which to recover, they feel at home’. So Clive, Chief Exec of CAIS, who is very obviously looking out for another opportunity, maintains that a residential centre is a necessity. How would he know? He’s already failed to produce any figures at all regarding how many veterans CAIS are catering for – so he wouldn’t even be aware if they did have ‘high numbers’ on their books. Of course the support hasn’t been there at the right time or the right place – Dafydd has been providing that support and it’s so dodgy that it keeps closing down. ‘A strong tradition of supporting the military’ – that’ll be a reference to the mediocre boarding house, there’s no other tradition in evidence. And there weren’t any ‘therapies’ on offer, just a Court report to get someone out of trouble. As for ‘the mountains and the sea’ – yes, north Wales has lovely mountains and sea, but you don’t find CAIS clients there. The CAIS clients are to be found in poor quality social housing in less desirable areas – if indeed they have homes to go to – and for recreational purposes they hang around the run down bits of local towns boozing or taking recreational chemicals. The only reason that they ‘feel at home’ in north Wales is that that’s where they end up, because that’s where Dafydd’s establishments are. As for ‘lots of people to help’ – is that a reference to the former facilitators of the paedophile gang or a reference to the scores of unpaid ‘peer guides’, some of whom are selling drugs to the clients?

One of the members of the Committee was Nia Griffiths (the MP who’s causing problems for Jeremy Corbyn at present). Nia comments that the ‘quality’ of St Dunstan’s (the centre run by Blind Veterans UK) is ‘superb’. There is no reference to the Committee having any in-depth knowledge of the work of St Dunstan’s, but it is mentioned that they’d received ‘hospitality’ the night before. So the politicians were given a good dinner, that always helps when the Third sector are after some funding.

Clive explains that the health service ‘cannot afford’ to do much ‘of this work’ and that ‘charities and the Third sector are sometimes in a much better position to deliver such services…we’re embedded locally with the tradition and history…we can certainly work more cheaply because we do not pay as much and we do not have the overheads and the infrastructure to support in the way the health service does’. OK, so Dafydd and co have log jammed all the positions in the region for decades and their ‘service’ is as cheap as chips because they don’t pay anyone properly and the ‘facilities’ on offer is a mediocre boarding house rather than a hospital so there’s no overheads or infrastructure. Clive then expands once more on the need for good governance, proper oversight, extremely tight financial governance and clinical governance. None of which CAIS provides. Clive states that the ‘therapies and the treatments’ on offer must equate with the best that the NHS can provide. Dafydd and co destroyed the mental health services in the region before they retired, so it won’t be difficult for the shite offerings from CAIS to match the NHS. Clive then really puts his cards on the table – he observes that it’s better if the NHS doesn’t provide these ‘services’, but where the NHS can ‘add value’ is through ‘exercising oversight, co-ordination and leadership of the whole agenda’. In other words ensuring that the shysters in CAIS land the contract. But Clive’s not one for competition in this brave new world of ‘co-production’ – he expresses concern about the number of charities in the arena, stating that the situation is ‘chaotic’ and ‘you just don’t know who to talk to next or who will approach you next’. I suspect that this translates as ‘we don’t want to have to compete with anyone else and at present we’re not sure who we approach to pull strings to land the contract’. Clive stresses that there must be ‘self-governance…we must hold our heads up high and be absolutely…clean in everything we do’. That won’t be a problem for the patient-shagging doctor and the paedophiles friends then. Clive is then blunt enough to refer to the ‘blank cheque’ that CAIS would like in order to establish a complete system of veteran rehabilitation based in Wales and to ‘somehow stop the explosion of charities that is taking place’ – he maintains that the other 800 charities in operation should be told to prove that they need to exist. Which of course they don’t, not with dear old CAIS there to provide the ‘services’ in return for more millions from the Welsh Gov’t, the DWP etc. It’s co-production and the Big Society! The learning has obviously been embedded and someone’s been empowered but it won’t be a service user. This must be the biggest gravy train that Dafydd, Lucille and Cledwyn have ever imagined. Clive gave this ‘evidence’ to the Welsh Affairs Committee five years ago – I will see if my co-researcher can find out whether Clive’s efforts were successful in loosening the purse strings of the Welsh Gov’t.

People who have not followed this blog from the beginning and thus have not read the older posts will probably be wondering how ever someone with Dafydd’s track record gained ‘credibility’ where substance abuse services are concerned. As with so much in the north Wales mental health services, I saw it happen…

The North Wales Hospital, where Dafydd was Top Doctor, had by the mid 80s become such an excruciating embarrassment that there was a lot of pressure for it to be closed and for Dafydd to be put out to grass. Previous posts have detailed the way in which Dafydd was unlawfully banging up people in there who had crossed the path of him or his mates or who had complained about being sexually abused in the children’s homes in north Wales. The Mary Wynch case (please see previous posts) had made legal history and hit the London media and subsequently there were calls in Parliament for an investigation. Dafydd weathered it all though – people in north Wales were tearing their hair out complaining that he seemed to be ‘untouchable’. In my posts about the north Wales paedophile ring I have described how it seems that Dafydd and the North Wales Hospital Denbigh were being afforded protection because of their role in concealing the paedophile ring and I have detailed the role of senior figures in the Welsh Office who were involved. However, people on the ground in north Wales were desperate to see the back of Dafydd and I was told at the time that there was a plan to use the newly opened psychiatric wards at Ysbyty Gwynedd to put Dafydd out of action. Before the exodus of the better staff from Ysbyty Gwynedd, one nurse described to me how the nurses loathed Dafydd so much that they planned to boycott his ward rounds to make it impossible for him to work. I was told that when he walked in, the nurses would get up and walk out en masse. After several weeks of this Dafydd stood up in public and said that his heart was broken and he could no longer carry on. I was told that he was ‘in tears’, although another nurse, who seemed to have some knowledge of just how serious Dafydd’s wrongdoing was, remarked to me that they were ‘crocodile tears’. It seems that he was right. Dafydd then started appearing in the Welsh media, making all sorts of allegations about the newly opened Hergest Unit and how appalling everything was there. Now things did go downhill very rapidly at the Hergest, but it definitely was not as bad as the North Wales Hospital Denbigh had been – Dafydd was so loathed that when he used to arrive at the Hergest for ‘clinics’ patients would hurl abuse at him and ask why he was allowed in. The people that Dafydd claimed to be defending on TV and in the press were patients with drug problems. When I had previously asked people why Dafydd was treating the most difficult but in many ways the most vulnerable patients I was always told that it was because the other psychiatrists refused to treat ‘the junkies’. Dafydd consistently appeared in the media waxing lyrical about how he cared for the drug addicts and how disgusting Gwynedd Health Authority was. It was never explained that there were so many complaints about Dafydd and so much unhappiness among his colleagues that everyone wanted him to retire. A series of managers from Gwynedd Health Authority were wheeled out to speak to the media and rather than saying ‘he has a record of sexually exploiting and illegally detaining patients’, they sought refuge in idiocies such as ‘Dr Jones has ways of working that his colleagues find difficult’. One of these managers, a clinical psychologist whom I remember as being much saner than his colleagues, seems to have had his career destroyed after daring to take on Dafydd – he left Wales and mental health work completely and went to pursue an alternative lifestyle in England. Dafydd then persuaded various people with drug problems to appear on TV stating that they feared for their lives if Dafydd retired. One of these people freely admitted that he’d been paid to appear.

Some other odd things happened at the time. The young man who had been paid to appear on TV was known to be selling class A drugs to schoolchildren in Bangor, quite openly. I knew someone who reported him to the police on a number of occasions. Yet he continued to ply his wares to the local kids on Bangor High Street. In daylight, as the kids were coming out of school. The other thing that this man did was burgle the house of the dreadful Judge Huw Daniel (please see previous posts for details of the wrongdoing of Huw Daniel). He was caught and admitted burgling the old bastard. But as I remember nothing happened to him. Now considering that Huw Daniel really loved sending the dispossessed to prison and clearly wanted to bang me up as well although it was very clear that I had not done what I was accused of (please see post ‘Interesting Happenings In The Legal System’), I find it quite surprising that an addict who was pretty well-renowned as a general ne’er do well faced no consequences at all for turning Daniel’s house over. He even produced the camera that he’d stolen from Daniel at the police station. At about this time, there was a senior nurse at Ysbyty Gwynedd whom I got on very well with. On at least two occasions I was told that he was forced by senior figures at Ysbyty Gwynedd to make statements to the police about me. I was also told that although he did their bidding, he was viewed with great suspicion by the authorities at Ysbyty Gwynedd because they feared that he was supplying me with the dirt on Dafydd (he wasn’t, he was always very professional in his dealings with me – there were plenty of other victims of Dafydd who willingly gave me the lowdown). This nurse was then appointed to a senior managerial position at Ysbyty Gwynedd and there was much rejoicing among the nurses because he was very popular among them and they all felt that they were kicked around badly by the psychiatrists and that perhaps things would now change with him in a senior position. He resigned from that position after a matter of months but I never discovered why. He then joined the exodus of staff from the Hergest Unit and took up a community position – with the drugs team on Anglesey. After a matter of weeks he went into hiding – a drugs patient had threatened to kill him and it seemed that this was a threat to be taken seriously (unlike many of the mental health staff, this man was not someone who threw around ludicrous allegations of harmless people being ‘dangerous’). Then something really nasty happened. He was due to visit me because this was one of the many times that the Hergest Unit prosecuted me (I was subsequently found not guilty as usual) and banned me from going to Ysbyty Gwynedd. Because this man had known me well from a few years previously he offered to fulfil the role of a CPN for me. He never arrived at my house though because his wife had died. She had collapsed at home – she was a nurse as well – and although he did all the appropriate things, she died later that night at Ysbyty Gwynedd. He was left a single parent although he did eventually remarry and then left Wales.

Whilst all this was happening, Dafydd used to hold ‘clinics’ for ‘his’ addicts on a Tuesday in the Hergest Unit. Those clinics were chaos. There would be so many addicts turning up that there was literally nowhere for them to wait. The waiting rooms were full, the corridors would be full, they were everywhere. So many people were turning up that they would be in and out of Dafydd’s room in 5 mins. There was no way that those were appropriate consultations for people with serious drug problems. The only way that some sort of order could be maintained was by having a receptionist from the Hergest standing outside Dafydd’s room shouting ‘next’ as soon as the last person had left. No-one even knew their names. None of the Hergest patients ever recognised any of them – because none of them were local. We discovered that they were coming from all over the place to see Dafydd, there was absolutely no catchment area allocation. They were making it very clear why they were coming as well – Dafydd was giving them drugs on request. I knew this because I was one of the patients protesting about Dafydd’s continued presence in the Hergest after serious complaints about him had not been investigated and one day I was standing outside of his door and I heard the transaction within taking place. Dafydd hit the roof when he found that I was outside and I was then banned from attending the Hergest Unit on Tuesdays, because I had discovered what was going on. But so had another patient – he was a former drug user who had spoken to some of Dafydd’s ‘patients’ who had been quite frank with him as to why they were turning up at this ‘clinic’. The Hergest staff were well aware of what the attraction was. Every time an angry patient asked why Dafydd was still allowed into the hospital, the staff would always respond with ‘the patients want to see him, they like him’. And one day the patient who was a former drug user said ‘they like him because he gives them drugs and I should know because I used to be like that myself’. There was silence. It was very clear that Dafydd used those ‘clinics’ to establish an enormous base of customers from right across Wales – and this was the customer list that he subsequently took with him when he left…

After a very long battle, it was agreed that Dafydd would retire when Denbigh shut down, in 1995. But a deal had been done. Dafydd was told that if he agreed to retire, the many outstanding complaints against him would not be followed up. Even better – as part of the deal, Dafydd was told that he would be allowed to continue with the remit for drugs and alcohol services and that these ‘services’ would be provided through CAIS, the charity that he had established and Chaired. Now lest anyone think ‘oh well if the other consultants were refusing to treat the addicts, the authorities didn’t have much choice’, let me enlighten you. There was a Dr John Marks from Liverpool who had an excellent reputation for successfully stabilising addicts and who WANTED to move to Gwynedd. Gwynedd Health Authority blocked his appointment on the grounds that he was ‘controversial’ because he prescribed maintenance doses of heroin to addicts (see post ‘Radio 4 Mentions A Name From The Past’). However he didn’t shag his patients or illegally detain people who’d been molested by a paedophile gang. But it was Dr Marks who was deemed controversial, not Dafydd. So, rather than a highly regarded man who really was a specialist in the care of drug users being employed once Dafydd had retired, Dafydd was allowed to use the Hergest to build up a huge business and then take it to CAIS with him when he ‘retired’. All funded by the NHS.

This could not have happened accidentally. At the same time that Dafydd was given this deal, Mary Wynch – who had by now been screwed over and financially ruined by Dafydd and his chums at Risley Remand Centre – was finally given an utter pittance as a final settlement and told to sod off forever and the calls for a Parliamentary investigation into her case suddenly stopped (please see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’             for the names of the politicians involved and their rewards for silence). All this was going on when John Jillings and his team were trying to carry out their investigation into the abuse in children’s homes in Clwyd but found themselves obstructed at every turn. The newly-appointed Chief Constable of the North Wales Police, Michael Argent, refused to co-operate with the team and the police withheld 130 boxes of evidence. The Social Services also failed to disclose all their evidence. (There will be more about the Jillings inquiry in a future post.) Jillings did of course conclude that the most appalling abuse of children had taken place in north Wales, that it had been going on for years and that it had been concealed by just about every agency and organisation. There were constant allegations of a paedophile ring at work involving ‘VIPs’ and the collusion of the security services. The Waterhouse Report subsequently admitted that there was a paedophile ring in existence but denied the involvement of ‘VIPs’. It has since been acknowledged by some of his former colleagues that Sir Peter Morrison, MP for Chester and Thatcher’s PPS, was having sex with under-age boys and visiting children’s homes in north Wales. Gordon Anglesea, a former senior officer with the North Wales Police, was imprisoned last year for sexually abusing boys in care in north Wales. No-one expects the questions related to all this to go away…

Previous posts have explained that the cases of Alison Taylor (the Gwynedd social worker who blew the whistle on the paedophile ring), Mary Wynch and me were all known about at the highest levels of the Welsh Office. We had all written to Welsh Office ministers and previous posts have detailed the documentation now in my possession demonstrating that both the Welsh Office’s lawyer, Andrew Park, and the Medical Ombudsman, Professor Robert Owen, knew that Dafydd et al had broken the law and perverted the course of justice but concealed it. The security services would have undoubtedly known about some of what was going on as well because they are responsible for the vetting of MPs – they must have known about Peter Morrison, it seemed that his colleagues all did, so MI5 will have. But there’s another reason why MI5 could have known about Dafydd. His work with addicts. If Dafydd was, as the addicts always claimed, prescribing them ‘anything’ they wanted, someone will have given him a Home Office licence. And the Home Office definitely knew about Dafydd – because when he unlawfully imprisoned Mary Wynch, the process also involved two corrupt doctors from Risley Remand Centre, one of whom was employed by the Home Office. The Home Office was one of the parties successfully sued by Mary and that case was heard by Lord Donaldson, Master of the Rolls. Of course the Home Office knew about it. And the Home Office are of course responsible for MI5. There was a barrel of shit in north Wales, Dafydd was responsible whichever way one looked at it and the Welsh Office, the Home Office and almost certainly MI5, knew what was happening. Previous posts have named the Secretaries of State and Home Secretaries involved in Mary’s case, but what of those with responsibility when Dafydd was allowed to retire without investigation once Mary was stuffed over and Denbigh closed down, in the middle of the Jillings investigation – allowed to retire that is whilst taking a substantial business of ‘providing services to drug abusers’ with him?

When the madness reached fever pitch, before the closure of Denbigh and Dafydd’s retirement, when nurses under suspicion of collaborating with me were being threatened with murder by drug users and their wives were dying in the ‘care’ of Ysbyty Gwynedd, when the Hergest Unit tried to frame me (again) and when Mary was stuffed over for good, the Secretary of State for Wales was John Redwood. He was in place between 27 May 1993 and 26 June 1995. David Hunt was appointed Secretary of State for Wales on 26 June 1995, but only until 5 July 1995. A two week appointment. Que?? Now David Hunt certainly knew all about Gwynedd Health Authority and it’s malpractice, because he had been Secretary of State for Wales previously between 4 May 1990 and 27 May 1993. There are letters in Gwynedd Archives from David Hunt to the Chair of Gwynedd Health Authority, Noreen Edwards. (Many of the insane letters about me written by various people at Gwynedd Health Authority were cc’d to Noreen Edwards.) Hunt knew that organisation was a car crash – there are mentions in Hansard and consultants from the Welsh Office had been sent in. William Hague was then appointed Secretary of State for Wales between 5 July 1995 and 2 May 1997. Hague had been Minister of State for the Disabled between 20 July 1994 and 5 July 1995. The North Wales Hospital was shut in the summer of 1995. As for the Home Secretary during this madness – that was Michael Howard, who was Home Secretary between 27 May 1993 and 2 May 1997. There’s no getting away from that is there – Michael ‘prison works’ Howard knew that a rogue psychiatrist in north Wales was illegally imprisoning people, was working in a region where there was the most serious abuse of children who were then ending up in the psychiatric system and often subsequently found dead – so someone allowed him free reign over a mass of people with serious drug problems… But there’s someone else who will also have been involved in this gory business as well. This all happened pre-devolution, so Dafydd, the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and the NHS finding of CAIS will have been the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Health, which between 9 April 1992 and 5 July 1995 was one Virginia Bottomley. Virginia is a former psychiatric social worker and at least one of her children is a doctor. Come on Ginny, banging people up illegally, diagnosing ‘paranoid schizophrenia’ in perfectly healthy people, distributing drugs, having sex with patients and concealing a paedophile gang – you know that they shouldn’t have been doing it. Stephen Dorrell then took over as Secretary of State for Health between 5 July 1995 and 2 May 1997.

Unlike some of the people named in previous posts associated with Very Great Wrongdoing, Lord Howard, Lord Hunt, Lord Hague and Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone are all still alive and kicking. Would they like to explain why they thought that concealing the most serious abuses and then giving a kickstart to a drugs distribution network was a good idea? Furthermore Theresa, before you sling mud at Wales again, just consider the contribution made to the present problems in it’s NHS by those four fuckwits.

And that is the story of how the party of Law n Order precipitated the gang warfare over drugs that blights north Wales today.

News Updates, Additional Comments and Observations

We’ve had a temporary reprieve from the squealing of the Top Doctors – presumably the continued bad publicity surrounding Ian Paterson, the rogue surgeon who carried out unnecessary operations for non-existent breast cancers, has taken the wind out of their sails for a few hours. However, the pressure continues from their associates. I have recently reported on the demands from the ‘life sciences industry’ for billions more to be handed over to the NHS – now it’s the turn of a few others to announce the end of the world if the Top Doctors are not given a large amount of dosh very soon. On Saturday the ‘Guardian’ ran an article penned by one Niall Dickson, Chief Exec of the ‘NHS Confederation’. Who are the ‘NHS Confederation’? Well according to their website, they are ‘the authentic voice of NHS leadership’, comprising the ‘NHS Employers Organisation’, who it is claimed are ‘the voice of employers in the NHS, supporting them to put patients first’. This translates as the voice of NHS senior managers – the Peter Higsons, the Martin Jones’s, the Katrina Percys, the ‘senior managers’ at Mid-Staffordshire etc etc ie. that collection of liars and charlatans who have constantly concealed scandals and who never ever resign no matter how many patients die. They do not have a history of ‘putting patients first’. But then neither does Niall Dickson – for a number of years Niall was the Chief Exec of the GMC and received numerous e mails from me regarding the criminal activities of doctors employed in the north Wales mental health service. No, Niall did not investigate – of course I did not know at the time that the GMC themselves presented a forged document purporting to be a letter from me some years earlier when I complained about the dreadful Dr Tony Roberts at the Hergest Unit. (Please see post ‘The General Medical Council And Yet Another Forged Document’.) Niall’s article in the ‘Guardian’ did not touch on forging letters from patients, or on psychiatrists with such high death rates among their patients that they showed up as statistical outliers though. No, Niall banged on at length about the necessity of NHS staff being paid more. Not of course the poorly paid staff, such as the cleaners, porters or healthcare assistants, just the Top Doctors and nurses. Dickson mentioned the crisis in staffing in the mental health services. There is a crisis Dickson because these services are so bad – and are run by people like Higson and Katrina Percy who then appoint ‘clinical directors’ such as Tony Roberts – that absolutely no-one wants to work in them. ‘Pay restraint’ doesn’t enter into the equation. Dysfunction, workplace bullying and having to witness one’s patients being neglected and abused does. Dickson states that ‘parts of the country are finding it almost impossible to entice GPs’. Like north Wales perhaps? I know GPs who wouldn’t work in north Wales but, as with the staffing crisis in the mental health services, that was because they didn’t want to work with negligent, abusive crooks. Furthermore, GPs are paid so well and have such generous pension pots that many of them choose to work only three days a week and retire in their mid-50s – hardly surprising that there’s a ‘shortage’. Of course there was one north Wales GP who waxed lyrical about the crisis in north Wales – one Dr Eamonn Jessup, Chairman of the North Wales Local Medical Committee. He ran a Facebook group entitled ‘higher pay for doctors’ and announced his retirement recently, yet even more recently cropped up in a clinic in Cyprus selling his services, along with another north Wales GP, the dreadful Dr DGE Wood, who coerced me into seeing Gwynne Williams the lobotomist and then spent the next few years telling anyone who would listen that I was ‘dangerous’ and that they mustn’t listen to a word that I said about Gwynne the lobotomist because I really couldn’t be believed. DGE Wood also had a very chummy relationship with Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, he who was concealing and facilitating the north Wales paedophile ring. Along with Jessup, Wood was a leading light in the North Wales Local Medical Committee. The Secretary of the North Wales Local Medical Committee was one Dr Phil White, BMA representative, who at one point mouthed off regularly in the local media. However he went silent for a while after his son was imprisoned for drug dealing. He soon bounced back though and last year appeared in the Daily Post stating that parents who allow their children to become obese should have their children taken into care because they aren’t looking after them properly. Unlike proud dad Phil, who reared a drug dealer. Furthermore, anyone who has ever encountered Phil White will have noticed one thing – that he is absolutely enormous. But then I’ve known for a long time that Phil has a sense of the ridiculous. Many years ago he had a patient who was a rather chaotic 17 year old girl who consumed vast quantities of prescription painkillers. She had a particular affinity for distalgesic and she was also a very heavy drinker. She was obtaining the distalgesic from one Phil White. At the time there was much publicity regarding distalgesic, because there had been a number of deaths of patients who had taken it whilst drinking. Brown’s brother speculated that perhaps Phil White was trying to finish her off: ‘wash ’em down with a couple of whiskies…’ Oh and dear old DGE Wood knew about Phil’s lethal prescribing habits as well… But they all stand together on the Local Medical Committee! To return to the dire warnings from the ‘NHS Confederation’. Perhaps someone else in a ‘leadership role’ with them can be relied upon to be a bit more patient-friendly than Niall Dickson? Such as their Chairman? Their Chairman is a Stephen Dorrell. That’s the Stephen Dorrell who was for many years a Tory MP and who was in 1995, under John Major, appointed the Secretary of State for Health. In 1995 there were requests in the House of Commons for an inquiry into the problems at the Foundation Trust Stafford. An investigation was refused. And look what was revealed some years later… Between 2010 and 2014 Dorrell was Chair of the House of Commons Health Select Committee. In 2012 he was reported to IPSA (Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority) after he arranged to sell his London flat to ‘friends’ who owned a chain of nursing homes and subsequently rented the flat back to Dorrell for £1,400/month (funded by the taxpayer). The Health Select Committee at the time was investigating social care – the chain of nursing homes owned by Dorrell’s ‘friends’ had been criticised by the CQC. The other Committee members did not know of Dorrell’s financial connection. Cameron refused to intervene. In 2014 Dorrell announced his intention to stand down from Parliament to take up a ‘senior role’ with consultants KPMG, ‘supporting their health and public service practice’. For six months he worked both for KPMG and as an MP, whilst KPMG considered bidding for a £1 billion NHS contract. At one point a group of pensioners arrived at Dorrell’s office with a petition signed by more than 2000 people demanding his resignation. The police were called on the grounds that the penioners were ‘trespassing’. In 2016, Dorrell was appointed Chair of healthcare consultant LaingBuisson. Nicky Morgan, that not very bright stooge of Cameron’s who doubled up as ‘Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities’, is on record as saying that Dorrell has been ‘a really important political figure in Leicestershire since 1979’. That’s the Leicestershire that, like north Wales, had a paedophile ring operating in it’s children’s services. The Leicestershire that had another MP, Greville Janner, who, it is now acknowledged, should have stood trial for child abuse. (Of course there is another Leicestershire MP of note, one Keith Vaz. The Keith Vaz that ends up in scandal after scandal, the most recent involving male prostitutes and cocaine, but somehow just bounces back after every resignation.) Dorrell’s role as Secretary of State for Health was taken over by Frank Dobson when Blair was elected in 1997. So the ‘NHS Confederation’ is led by one man with a long track record of ignoring the serious wrongdoing of the Top Doctors and another man who has his nose deep in the trough of privatised healthcare. ‘Putting patients first’ really is not on the radar of either of them.

Dickson is not the only Top Doctors friend to be begging for more dosh for the NHS. Chris Hopson, CEO of ‘NHS Providers’ which ‘represents hospital trusts’ (in England), has stated that the mere £770 million overspend by English NHS Trusts last year – despite an extra £2 billion bailout funding from the Westminster Gov’t – represents ‘genuine success at cutting costs’. Hopson has featured on this blog previously – begging for more money for NHS staff salaries (see post ‘Those Who Care Are Concerned’). Two ‘health thinktanks’ have also joined in. Sally Gainsbury, senior policy analyst at the Nuffield Trust, has commented that ‘£770 million is a very poor measure of how much the NHS is actually overspending by…[it] overspent by significantly more that £770 million’. However both the Nuffield Trust and the Kings Fund maintain that nonetheless the NHS is performing the most magnificent job, is underfunded and Must Be Given More. The present Chief Exec of the Kings Fund is Prof Chris Ham. The former Chief Exec is a Niall Dickson! And the Kings Fund have just jointly published a report on ‘future models of care’ with my old friends the Royal College of Psychiatrists… The Nuffield Trust, like the Kings Fund, is very much part of the medical establishment. I know the Nuffield Trust as a funder of research. Some years ago I and a senior colleague at Bangor University applied to the Nuffield Trust for funding to explore the experiences of mental health patients, including those who had been prosecuted by the NHS. Our bid was peer-reviewed and it came back with many compliments regarding our methodology, our research design and our background knowledge. However we were turned down for funding because ‘it is a great pity that a project claiming to research service users experiences does not contain a service user researcher’. I was named as the person who would be managing the day to day work of the project – but I wasn’t wearing my yellow star… So my senior colleague wrote to the Nuffield Trust explaining my background but commenting that it was intrusive and unethical to expect researchers to provide confidential details concerning their personal medical histories as part of their funding applications. He also observed that the Nuffield Trust seemed to be allocating research funding for reasons other than research-related criteria. He did not receive a reply to his letter. (If any member of the Nuffield Trust is reading this blog: you will now realise that I have more ‘lived experience’ of the mental health services than either Peter Beresford or Rachel Perkins. Furthermore, they have never been harassed, threatened, abused and framed for serious offences by the mental health services. I think that my yellow star is bigger and better than theirs even if I have a habit of not wearing it at all times as required. In the light of this, would you now like to give me some funding?) Just in case Niall Dickson, Chris Hopson, the Nuffield Trust and the Kings Fund weren’t providing enough muscle for the Top Doctors, I noticed that it was also reported that a number of unidentified NHS ‘finance experts’ all maintained that none of the three major political parties manifestos were pledging enough extra money for the NHS during the next Parliament. Not even Jeremy and John McDonnell, who as far as I can see have promised to give the NHS everything, including the shirts off their backs.

Now for a bit of news from north Wales. Daily Post online excitedly reported that a Zoe Davies of Wrexham has been given a community award from the esteemed Arfon Jones, North Wales’s Police and Crime Commissioner. It was explained that Zoe, 39, is a former drug addict but has been clean for two years. Zoe started using cannabis and ecstasy at 13, sold LSD at 14 (Zoe maintains that this wasn’t very profitable, she only made enough to buy more drugs), was onto methadone reefers at 17 and also ‘got really good at blagging doctors for prescription drugs’ and was an addict at 18. She explained that the doctors in the Wrexham area stopped prescribing methadone but because she was addicted she experienced serious withdrawal symptoms. She moved away from Wrexham believing that would enable her to move away from drugs, but although she was away from north Wales she still ended up in prison for dealing, once in 2008 and again in 2013. Zoe now volunteers with CAIS and works as a healthcare support worker at Hafan Wen ‘detox centre’ in Wrexham. Zoe commented that she wants to ‘repay the people and community of Wrexham’ ‘for all the trouble’ that she caused. I’m not sure that Zoe was the one causing the trouble. Let’s look at this story closely. Zoe, a teenage drug addict, managed to ‘blag’ prescription drugs out of doctors. There was one doctor in north Wales who was notorious for, as one former addict told me, giving you ‘anything that you wanted, anything at all’. That was one Dr Dafydd Alun Jones – Chair of CAIS. CAIS runs the Hafan Wen detox unit. Furthermore, it was Jones who was the mover and the shaker behind the campaign to stop doctors prescribing methadone – Jones was taking patients who had stabilised on methadone off it and loading them up with benzodiazepines instead. Indeed, in the 1990s Jones appeared on ‘The Kane Debates’ boasting about this practice. He was challenged by members of the audience who told him that benzodiazepines were highly addictive but Dafydd robustly defended his prescribing excesses, pompousing away about how ‘the profession’ understands the dangers and has regulated itself. So perhaps Dafydd can explain why in today’s Mail Online there’s a huge feature regarding the enormous numbers of people who have become hooked on benzodiazepines because of irresponsible prescribing by UK medical practitioners and how the BMA are spearheading a campaign to stop this. That would be the BMA that Dafydd and his colleagues were using for free advice and to back them up when they were perjuring themselves in an attempt to have me imprisoned when I complained about Dafydd’s criminal activities. The GMC are involved in the stop the benzodiazepines campaign as well – yes, the same GMC who failed to take any action against Dafydd despite the numerous very serious complaints against him. Regarding Zoe’s failed attempts to get away from the drug scene by moving to another region – this is standard advice given to people with drug problems. It is the advice given to the people from Liverpool with drug problems and it is why they are encouraged to move to north Wales – as Dafydd well knows, because some of those people end up as his patients. I note that Zoe tried selling drugs when she was young but didn’t make much money. She obviously wasn’t linked into the right distribution network then, because I have been told again and again that a lot of the CAIS ‘volunteers’ and ‘peer supporters’ are dealing in drugs and are doing very well out of this. The real winner has to be Dafydd though – CAIS are being paid millions by the Welsh Gov’t (as previously detailed on this blog) for their part in the battle against drugs in north Wales. By the way, a reader recently sent me more info regarding CAIS. Business must be booming, not only have they colonised mid-Wales but they’re now in south Wales as well. The same reader also wondered whether CAIS Chief Exec Clive Wolfendale is about to launch his own enterprise. This reader sent me a link about Clive and his ventures and I notice that before his time with the North Wales Police, Clive was a member of the Greater Manchester Police Force. That was another force alleged to be rife with corruption, the force that ignored the sexual exploitation of hundreds of children by criminal gangs in Rochdale recently, the force that violently assaulted the student demonstrators at Manchester University in 1984, one of the students being threatened and assaulted so seriously that he fled abroad to hide. Furthermore, when I was able to access the details of Elfed Roberts’s Facebook friends because he hadn’t set his privacy settings – Elfed being the former north Wales police officer who left the force under a very big cloud and was subsequently appointed as the Chair of the North West Wales NHS Trust, only to achieve notoriety by demanding that I be arrested because I had pink hair, had called his car a penismobile and he was sick of my complaints – some of them were former officers in the Greater Manchester Police Force. So Clive’s just the sort of man one wants involved with a drug charity then. On a pan-Wales level.

What of the man who presented Zoe with her award, Arfon Jones? Well it transpires that as well as presenting her with the award, he nominated her for it as well. Arfon is of course a regular on this blog, Arfon being the former police officer who used to drive Gordon Anglesea to the venues where he molested children and Arfon being the man whose ‘oversight’ led to Anglesea’s widow receiving 50% of a police pension, even though her husband died in prison a convicted child abuser. Arfon told the Post that Zoe was a ‘beacon of hope’ for the community. Just like Llyr Huws Gruffydd (Plaid) described Dafydd’s mediocre boarding house aka Ty Gwyn nursing home as a ‘beacon of excellence’. The beacon that charged patients more than a thousand a week for a shared room, that told patients to go into Llandudno and buy takeaways for meals, the beacon where patients received no face to face counselling or therapy from Dafydd or anyone else… There’s another person in the photo of Zoe receiving her award – Ann Griffiths, the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales. Ann was ‘nominated’ for this role in July 2016. She trained as a psychiatric social worker! She has lived on Ynys Mon since 1984, when she took up a post as a social worker with a community mental health team. So that would be one of the local CMHTs who were complicit with the criminal activities of Dafydd and his colleagues at Ysbyty Gwynedd and the North Wales Hospital then. Who were banging up people who’d complained about being molested whilst they were residents of children’s homes in north Wales. Ann was later promoted to the position of line manager at Gwynedd County Council. So her manager would have been Lucille Hughes, the Director of Gwynedd Social Services (as well as Dafydd’s mistress), who was later named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in the social services but failing to act on this information. Ann was then team leader in the Arfon Duty Team responsible for the initial assessments and joint investigation of child abuse with the police (it’s just terrifying isn’t it – no wonder so few of the paedophiles were imprisoned until very recently and so many of the witnesses were found dead). Ann then spent 10 years working for NSPCC Cymru! Again her responsibilities related to children who had been abused – presumably whilst in the care of Ann’s previous employer – and she set up the NSPCC Cymru helpline (which was dogged by allegations that callers weren’t being helped…) Since 2002 Ann has been an Independent Social Care Consultant employed in a range of roles across north Wales – again largely concerned with children who’ve been abused… So a social worker employed whilst the paedophile ring was active in the social services was later used to ‘investigate’ the abuse, ‘counsel’ the victims, chair the child protection conferences and was employed in very senior roles in this very abusive ‘service’. Which has still not been cleaned up – I know one social work student who left north Wales as soon as they qualified because they maintained that children in care were still being abused and I know someone who grew up in foster care in north Wales who was violently abused by her foster mother. She ran away from the foster home and called ‘her’ social worker and told him what was happening to her. He drove her to the police station, rang the foster mother, summoned her to the police station and asked the girl ‘would you like to repeat your allegations to your foster mother?’ The girl was then returned to the foster mother. That social worker still works in north Wales as a social worker. The abusive foster mother was rewarded in an honours list for her ‘contribution’ to ‘looked after children’. But Ann Griffiths is now Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner. Furthermore in 2013 Ann was elected as a Plaid Councillor to Anglesey County Council. She has held the shadow portfolio for Social Services and Housing and Planning and was Vice-Chair of the fostering panel. She is currently chairperson of the Planning and Licensing Committee. Anglesey Council has appeared regularly in Private Eye’s ‘Rotten Boroughs’ column and some councillors have been imprisoned. There are constant allegations that the Planning Committee in particular is corrupt and one councillor is alleged to have become a millionaire through dodgy planning deals. In 2015 Ann stood in the general election as the Plaid candidate for Montgomeryshire and in 2016 she was the Plaid candidate for the National Assembly for Wales election. It can only be a matter of time before she joins that Strong Woman on her Independence Journey, Leanne, in the Senedd. ‘Jesus Christ’ as they used to say in Bethesda…

There has been a news report that someone called Matt Johnson is going to be starring in a film to be shot in the Brecon Beacons that will be ‘tackling mental health’. Johnson is described as being an ‘active ambassador for MIND’. The MIND that is colluding with abuse and criminal activity in the mental health services in north Wales and elsewhere and was recently outed on the Disability News Service as intending to bid for Gov’t contracts to assist the Tories in removing welfare benefits from people with mental health problems. Paul Farmer, the CEO of MIND, earns approx. £100,000pa. Other MIND ambassadors include those well-known underprivileged people Stephen Fry, Alistair Campbell and Melvyn Bragg.

A friend told me that they had heard Dr David Healy on Radio 4 and then another friend observed that Healy has positioned himself as a defender of ECT rather than anti-depressants. Which is interesting because there’s been an awful lot in the media recently about how ECT is actually really good and ooh its nothing like ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest’ and a nurse held my hand and it was lovely and I’m really glad that I had it. It may be coincidental but I wonder if David ‘you’ll never take me alive’ Healy has been doing a bit of PR? After all he has good media connections, he may well be gearing up for one of his summer appearances at Hay or somewhere in front of an audience who have no idea of what he has been complicit with at the Hergest Unit and Healy is of course the psychiatrist with responsibility for ECT at the Hergest Unit. I witnessed someone who was being ‘prepared’ for ECT at the Hergest Unit on one occasion – she had experienced it previously and I presume that it wasn’t a beautiful experience with a nurse holding her hand, because she was incredibly distressed, shouting at nurses ‘you’re not going to do that to me again’, tried to run away from them and then tried to hide. Three of them yelled at her ‘right if you won’t walk you’re going in a wheelchair’, picked her up and man-handled her into the said wheelchair and pinned her in there whilst they carted her off. This was a lady of about 70. I bet David Healy isn’t going to tell the Radio 4 listeners about that…

There has been some shock-horror figures released and discussed in the ‘Guardian’ regarding the number of students who are withdrawing from universities because of mental health problems. Brown and I published on this many years ago, but I see that the same problems exist now – students cannot get care and instead of the focus being on an NHS that is seriously letting them down, universities are being blamed. Universities are being told that they must provide more ‘support’ for students. Aren’t the Top Doctors paid to do this? University staff aren’t paid half what the Top Doctors are and anyway they are supposed to be teachers and researchers. Indeed the Top Doctors in north Wales were so bloody hopeless that other mental health professionals were actually advising local people to enrol for courses at the University because the University had a counselling service and counselling wasn’t available from the NHS mental health services. Furthermore I knew a number of students who were just completely unable to access any mental healthcare at all – they all told me that their tutors had been far more supportive to them than the bunch of thugs that constituted the Arfon Community Mental Health Team or the psychiatrists who refused to see them, telling them to ‘go home’ (ie. back to their parents) if they were ill. One of my friends is a retired academic and she told me that she regularly took distressed suicidal students to Ysbyty Gwynedd A&E for assessments, only to be kept waiting for hours and told ‘take them back to their parents, if they’re students we won’t treat them’. I knew of one member of staff who was allowing two seriously depressed students to stay over at her place on the grounds that she was not going to stand by and watch them kill themselves. The same member of staff told me that she had contacted the dreadful Keith Fearns, ‘leader’ of the Arfon Team, to tell him that one of ‘his’ clients was threatening to kill himself by jumping off the Menai Bridge, only to be told by Fearns to let him go on and do it then and that if ‘the little bastard’ bothered Fearns again, Fearns would section him. How on earth has anyone got the temerity to suggest that the deficit lies with universities when ‘mental health professionals’ behave like this? There are even some people making noises about the possibility of suing universities for lack of a duty of care – surely it is the NHS that has a duty of care? In my own case, whilst I was doing my PhD, my supervisor and his wife very kindly did what the mental health services were being paid to do but refused to – throughout my PhD they flatly refused to treat me, threatened and abused me when they saw me around the town and rang my supervisor and other members of staff to tell them that I was ‘dangerous’. And of course tried to frame me for a serious crime, only for the case to collapse when it became evidence that a number of ‘mental health professionals’ had committed perjury. Believe me, the problem of students being unable to get support for mental health problems does not lie with the universities.

Mail online reported that a nurse from Scotland confronted Nicola Sturgeon and told her that she was having to use foodbanks. There was then an accusation that the nurse in question was a Tory plant, which was robustly denied. Sturgeon apologised and ‘paid tribute’ to hard-working NHS staff. Photos were then found online of the nurse knocking back champagne and enjoying herself on holiday in New York. Of course if Nicola really wants to know what goes on in the Scottish NHS, instead of relying on nurses telling tall stories during an election campaign, she could just pay a visit to Parkhead Hospital in Glasgow, where I had the misfortune to spend a few weeks about three years ago, after a neurological problem was misdiagnosed. I was assaulted by nurses myself and witnessed this happening to other patients. Staff regularly swore at and insulted the patients. There were patients who had been sectioned there for months who didn’t even have a change of clothes. Myself and another patient caught staff altering drug sheets and stealing drugs – this wasn’t even for their own use, they were selling the drugs to another member of staff from another ward who arrived at about 5am each morning to collect the package. One young male patient was delighted to discover that he could access hard core porn on the ward TV – because someone on the hospital staff had subscribed to those channels and was obviously watching it whilst they were on duty. An elderly lady fell over in a corridor and injured herself whilst the staff looked on – it was other patients who helped her. As ever on such abusive wards, there were two or three staff doing their best – one encouraged me to document everything that I was witnessing and make a formal complaint. I did and there was of course never any investigation. When I finally got out of there I did a bit of research – there had been a number of deaths there, the hospital had been deemed unsafe and had been earmarked for closure some years ago. But somehow Sturgeon just hadn’t got round to that. Whilst I sat in there making field-notes, I watched the Scottish news where Scottish Ministers regularly made an appearance boasting about the fine state of the NHS Scotland. I discovered that one reason why Parkhead was in such a state was that all the resources were going into Southern General, the flagship hospital and neurological centre a few miles away. Southern General is one of the best hospitals in the western world and has had literally billions invested in it. So I thought that I’d find out a bit about it. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the clinical director was one Dr Gwen Jones-Edwards – I recognised that name. She used to work at the Hergest Unit of all places and disappeared in the mid to late 90s. If anyone knows how a mediocre jobbing psychiatrist from a dump like the Hergest Unit whose colleagues were concealing the presence of a paedophile ring ended up ten years later as clinical director of Southern General, please do let me know. It is so improbable that I know that there’ll be a story worth blogging about behind it.

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack yesterday in Manchester, both Andy Burnham and Tessa Jowell were interviewed on the ‘Today’ programme this morning. Burnham was his usual hideous self – but then he was someone who in his capacity an Secretary of State for Health, along with Alan Johnson, ignored 81 requests for an investigation into the very high death rates in Mid-Staffs. Andy had something far more important to think about – he wanted to become Prime Minister… He didn’t make it, so now he’s settled for Mayor of Manchester. Tessa was just wonderful – you could picture her taking the onion out of her pocket, as she put on her special social workers voice and kept referring to ‘loving’ and ‘caring’ for all the people in Manchester, oh and ‘connecting’ with them. She also kept mentioning ‘leadership’ as well for some reason and remembered Ken Livingstone’s wonderful ‘leadership’. That’s the Ken who signed the Early Day Motion to keep Garth Angaharad open, one of Dafydd’s prisons where the kids who were abused in the children’s homes ended up (please see ‘More On Those Who Signed That Early Day Motion’). The man who owned Garth  Angharad, Paul Hett, also owned ‘schools’ and ‘children’s homes’ which were the centre of allegations of cruelty and sexual abuse. Some of the children placed in those homes/schools came from London boroughs. Such as Lambeth – where Ken was a councillor. Tessa also had a connection to Lambeth – she was a children’s care officer there. Lambeth Council have now paid out several million pounds to children in their homes in the 70s and 80s who were abused by paedophile gangs – Lambeth admitted to knowing that the gangs were at work but failed to protect the children. Before working for a council that allowed paedophiles free reign Tessa was a psychiatric social worker. At the Maudsley. Where Dafydd trained! Tessa was also deputy director of MIND. At the same time as MIND was concealing criminal activity in the north Wales mental health services. And now Tessa is in the House of Lords talking about loving and caring. For more information on Tess and her appalling New Labour cronies, please see post ‘The London Connection’. (NB. Tessa – you need to be a bit careful with regard to talking about loving people. Dafydd used to tell his patients that he loved them, but what he meant was that he was sexually exploiting them. And Suzanne Hamlet of Prestwood Homes fame told the patients that she loved them and she was operating a people trafficking business. Of course, MIND knew about both Dafydd and Prestwood.)

News Round Up, April 21 2017

Two subjects that have been extensively covered on this blog previously are in the news again today, namely Arfon Jones the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales and that well known miracle that emanated from north Wales, Mindfulness.

Firstly, Arfon. Our esteemed Police and Crime Commissioner has been speaking out about modern slavery, expressing his deep concern regarding human trafficking. Arfon maintains that huge numbers of people are being trafficked through north Wales, partly due to its proximity to the port of Holyhead and he has proudly announced that his office will be funding a modern day slavery ‘support officer’, a UK first. Both BBC News Wales and the Daily Post online are covering this story and in the Post’s report Arfon is quoted as maintaining that people subjected to human trafficking may be frightened to ask for help because they may come from countries where police corruption is a serious problem. Could Arfon possibly be thinking of the sort of police corruption leading to situations in which the police have ignored allegations from people that they were sexually abused whilst in the care of the local authorities? Such as happened in north Wales for decades? If Arfon can remember back as far as last year, he’ll remember that a man called Gordon Anglesea was jailed for child abuse. Anglesea was a former senior policeman with the North Wales Police and enjoyed the support of the North Wales Police Federation until the day that he was convicted. They also turned out en masse to give him a good send off at his funeral. Arfon should remember the whole messy business very well – because at Anglesea’s trial Arfon gave evidence admitting that as a junior officer it was he who used to drive Gordon Anglesea to the locations where Anglesea abused teenaged boys. Although Anglesea died in prison as a convicted sex offender, Anglesea’s widow is still in receipt of a police pension – because of an ‘oversight’ on the part of Arfon! If Arfon wants further evidence about police corruption in the force in which he served for decades he could read previous posts of mine on this blog, in which I have described in detail being repeatedly arrested at the behest of the mental health services for ludicrous offences (eg. staring at a social worker) or for offences that I did not commit (eg. threatening to kill NHS managers). Now some of Arfon’s former colleagues did conduct themselves properly – but some of them were very obviously colluding with an abusive mental health service and would have happily seen me imprisoned for things that everyone knew that I did not do. Other mental health patients were not as lucky as me and they ended up going to prison, some of them dying in there. I have been told again and again by these people and their relatives that they did not commit the crimes for which they were convicted – I’m inclined to believe them, because I didn’t commit the crimes of which I was accused and the names of the same mental health professionals, the same Magistrates Courts and the same Police Stations come up regularly in these accounts. Oh and by the way Arfon, far from me and others not telling anyone what was happening to us, some of us were as screaming as loudly as we could but we were ignored repeatedly. Politicians, police officers, mental health ‘campaigners’ and even Crimestoppers were told again and again what was happening to mental health patients in north Wales – just as the police and politicians were told again and again that children in care were being abused… Perhaps this explains the career choices of two former senior police officers in north Wales. Clive Wolfendale is now CEO of CAIS, a ‘substance abuse’ charity chaired by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, a highly abusive retired psychiatrist. Dafydd’s former mistress Lucille Hughes sits on the Board of CAIS – that’s the Lucille Hughes who was named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in Gwynedd Social Services when she was Director there but who failed to respond. Elfed Roberts, upon leaving the North Wales Police after what I was told was a conversation with the Chief Constable concerning the privileges and perks that Elfed seemed to be enjoying, later took up the position as Chairman of the North West Wales NHS Trust. During which time he achieved notoriety by having me arrested because I had pink hair, had called his car a penismobile and had made so many complaints about the mental health services that he was sick of me…

Now for a bit more about Mindfulness! A reader has sent me a link to an article in which researchers from Brown University in the US claim that Mindfulness doesn’t ‘work’ for men and that the people who ‘developed’ Mindfulness ‘didn’t bother’ to research the gender aspect. The people who developed Mindfulness didn’t bother to do an awful lot of things – they didn’t bother to publish the fact that the geographical area in which Mindfulness was pioneered and declared a success had one of the highest suicide rates in the UK and also hosted the grossly abusive Arfon Community Mental Health Team, led by one Keith Fearns who was later dismissed for neglecting patients. Keith himself is thanked in Mark Williams’s early books on Mindfulness although his name disappears from later editions, but by the time that they were written Mark Williams had waved a fond farewell to Bangor and the horrors of it’s mental health services and knew that huge numbers of the patients were now dead and could no longer talk about the original ‘clinical trials’ and that the mental health professionals had colluded to such an extent that they were never going to blow the whistle on this very dodgy research. For a full account of the travesty that was the ‘original’ work on the development of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and why the truth about it has never emerged, please see my post ‘The Biggest Expert of the Lot’. Whilst I am glad to see the researchers at Brown University question Mindfulness and its very flaky foundations, I would point out that talking about ‘women’s emotions’ and ‘men’s emotions’ is very problematic in itself, as is claiming to be meaningfully measuring concepts like ‘self-compassion’…

News Round-Up, April 17 2017

A number of items that might be of interest to readers of this blog are in the news today.

BBC News Wales are reporting the comments of Clive Wolfendale, the CEO of CAIS, regarding the problems of psychoactive substances such as ‘Spice’ which have been hitting the headlines recently. Clive expresses his concern that the recent outlawing of what were previously ‘legal’ highs may push the market for these drugs into the hands of ‘criminals’, as Clive maintains has happened with heroin and cocaine. Well Clive I have heard allegation after allegation that CAIS workers are dealing in heroin and cocaine, so you need only look within your own organisation to find such criminals. But then if Clive wishes to acquaint himself with the catalogue of law breaking that the Chair and founder of CAIS himself, one Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, has involved himself with, he only needs to read many of the posts on this blog. But as Clive Wolfendale is a former senior police officer with the North Wales Police it is highly likely that he knew all about the activities of CAIS workers and Dr Dafydd Alun Jones when he accepted the appointment as CEO of CAIS. Which makes one wonder why he ever did and indeed why Dafydd offered him the appointment.

The Guardian is reporting on the increased use of ECT in the UK and speculates why this may be. One Professor Richard Bentall, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Liverpool University, is quoted as saying that in his view ECT is an example of the complete failure of evidence based medicine, in that the evidence for it’s use is not there. I suspect that Richard Bentall is right about this, but Richard Bentall is a man who has spent part of his career in north Wales and has worked with many of the glorious mental health professions in the region – and he trained at Bangor University School of Psychology as well. Richard Bentall knows exactly how bad that lot are, how questionable their practice and research is and that much of what they are doing is just as/even more damaging than ECT and has just as little evidence behind it. He successfully unmasked Raj Persuad as a lying plagiarist – surely it is time for him to speak out about a few other liars and cheats who are abusing patients to boot…

Finally the news that has most excited the London based media today, Prince Harry ‘bravely speaking out’ about his ‘suppressed grief’ after his mother’s death and how it all resulted in ‘two years of chaos’ when he was in his twenties for which he had counselling on the advice of Prince William. Harry is keen to urge others who are suffering to ask for similar help – well being prince Harry, I suspect that the sort of unhinged lethal abusive fuckwits who populate the mental health services in such great numbers that the rest of us have had so many problems with were kept well away from him, but to be honest Harry, I think that ‘asking for help’ from a profession this dysfunctional is a very high risk strategy if you don’t happen to be a Prince. (Although his mum was widely known to also have received such ‘help’, she never seemed particularly happy with herself and her life.) They’re not very good at helping Harry, it’s a con. I look forward to various dreadful people from the psychiatric establishment and the likes of dear old MIND jumping on the bandwagon in the next few days – Professor Sir Simon Wessely already has done so – applauding Harry for his bravery, for ‘fighting the stigma’ etc, stressing how much ‘help’ is available and how much more would be so even if only a few more billion were thrown in the direction of the mental health services, presumably so they can then do more of what already doesn’t work and causes so much damage and tell even more lies on Oath about anyone who dares cross their path. I did note that no-one has dared mention one obvious flaw in Harry’s argument – he stated that he was in such a bad state mentally that he ‘felt like punching someone’, so he took up boxing to control his aggression. So presumably he did end up punching someone, on quite a regular basis. The ‘journalist’ who landed this scoop was Bryony Gordon, writer of vacuous rubbish in the Daily Telegraph regarding her weight, her relationship with her mother, how much wine she drinks, her ‘battle’ with mild depression, what it’s like ‘being a mum’ and her many drunken shags with married men whom she worked with when she was younger which she now Deeply Regrets – although considering her lack of talent I cannot help wondering whether it was one such drunken shag that led to her securing a job on the Telegraph.

So This Is What £4.9 Million Buys

The Daily Post is running yet another report on the north Wales drugs ‘crisis’ which seems to have caught the public’s imagination (please see blog posts ‘Normal Service Resumed – News Round-Up, March 8 2017’ and ‘Update, March 9 2017: My Complaint To The Betsi, Wrexham Drug Problem, Anglesey Children’s Services, HMP Berwyn’). The Daily Post is running another interview with the relative of someone in Wrexham who is alleged to be using Black Mamba, this time the mother of a teenaged girl who, it is claimed, has been ‘lost to the streets of Wrexham’. The mother who spoke to the Daily Post maintained that her daughter had complex mental health issues and hit the Black Mamba last year when her baby was removed from her and put into ‘care’. The ‘despairing mum’ stated that her daughter ‘needed sectioning last year but, as there were no available beds at the mental health unit in Wrexham, they let her walk out of the hospital…I’ve asked the police to help but they can’t do anything. As she’s not funding the drug through shoplifting, they can’t arrest her’.

I note that although the emphasis in this story is on the Black Mamba and the problems allegedly stemming from this, once again this would seem to be a story of complete state failure. A teenager with mental health issues has been unable to access mental health care – that is rapidly becoming an everyday story of north Wales folk – and it would seem that no-one will ‘help’ unless she breaks the law and is arrested. There is also another huge elephant in the room here – this teenager has had a baby removed from her care. There is at present a lot of concern about the fate of women who have had children removed from their care and of course there is equal concern about what happens to those children once they have been taken into ‘care’. North Wales has not covered itself in glory in this field in the past – there was a paedophile ring in this region that operated via the children’s services for years.

The Post also reports that Andrew RT Davies, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives, called on Jane Hutt AM, the leader of the House, to convene a summit involving all stakeholders involved in tackling substance misuse. Davies was reported to have said that ‘the Welsh Government’s substance misuse strategy is costing the taxpayer an estimated £50m annually to deliver, but the problems related to alcohol and drugs endure and show no meaningful signs of abating… the shocking images last week of drug users in Wrexham’s bus station epitomise the lethal complacency of Labour ministers in tackling this issue’. (At this point I would suggest that Mr Davies checks his facts – the original ‘shocking images’ that appeared in the Daily Post were not actually of ‘drug users’ in Wrexham bus station and this was admitted in the small print.) Responding to Mr Davies, Ms Hutt said: ‘If we look particularly at North Wales, the Welsh Government provides over £4.9m of the substance misuse action fund to the North Wales area planning board. That’s about commissioning a range of needs-led services delivered by the providers in that region’. Ms Hutt goes on to refer to the ‘multi-agency approach’ that is used, the ‘agencies’ including the North Wales Police, the police and crime commissioner, Wrexham local authority and voluntary sector organisations’.

Mr Davies may erroneously believe that Wrexham bus station is full of comatose people flat out on the floor because they are ‘on drugs’ – try travelling on a bus and changing at Wrexham bus station Mr Davies and you’ll soon find out that this is not true – but he does have a point about the Welsh Govt’s complacency. I’m sure that they WANT to tackle substance abuse, but they need to look at to whom they have given £4.9 million. The ‘voluntary sector organisation’ in question is CAIS, the substance abuse charity established and chaired by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones. Dafydd has long since promoted himself as the one ‘expert’ on drugs that north Wales has and since he assumed this role in the 1990s, the drug problem in north Wales has exploded. Despite their track record of dismal failure, Dafydd and CAIS continue to pick up lucrative contracts for ‘substance misuse services’ and now even for ‘service user involvement’. Readers are encouraged to read my blog post ‘The Story Behind £1.5 Million’ for the background to the very questionable ‘commissioning process’ that led to CAIS landing the contract for ‘service user involvement’ from Wrexham County Borough Council. And now we know that CAIS is receiving the best part of £5 million for providing an utterly hopeless ‘substance abuse service’, I suggest that someone undertakes a full investigation into how so much taxpayers money is finding its way into the coffers of CAIS. I’m also not sure how CAIS manages to charge so much for their lacklustre services – CAIS constantly boasts that it is a service based on ‘volunteers’ and ‘peer support’ (it’s ’empowering’ you see – the ‘service users’ ‘look after each other’, ‘giving something back’ and in return they don’t get paid). So where have the millions that CAIS has received gone?

But just to return to women who have their children removed and the fate of the children who are removed – I mentioned that for many years a paedophile ring operated in north Wales, through the children’s services. After the first investigation into this paedophile ring the Waterhouse Report was published, which named the Director of Gwynedd Social Services, Lucille Hughes, as knowing about this paedophile ring but failing to act. Lucille Hughes is a former partner of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and now sits on the Board of Trustees for CAIS. Here she is, wearing a very ill-advised wig http://www.cais.co.uk/personel/board/ Surely Lucille can purchase a decent hair-piece and still have change from £5 million. As for one of the other people mentioned by Jane Hutt in the ‘multi-agency’ approach to substance abuse in north Wales, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales, Arfon Jones – well he’s featured on this blog before. Arfon gave evidence in the recent trial of Gordon Anglesea, the former senior policeman who was imprisoned for sexual offences against children in care in north Wales. Arfon was the junior police officer who chauffeured Anglesea to the building in which Anglesea molested his victims. Arfon used to drive Anglesea to this location but was never required to pick him up again. Arfon didn’t ever seem to ask any questions about this arrangement. But then Arfon is a tad incompetent – it was recently revealed that Anglesea’s widow is still receiving £50% of his police pension, although he died as a convicted sex offender. It transpired that this was due to an ‘oversight’ by the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales. Another ‘agency’ named by Jane Hutt as playing a role in the ‘multi-agency’ fight against drugs was the North Wales Police. That’s the same North Wales Police that employed Arfon and Anglesea. The North Wales Police employed someone else as well until quite recently – Clive Wolfendale, the former Assistant Chief Constable. Clive is now the CEO for CAIS.

Being a man of many talents, Dafydd also gave evidence as an ‘expert witness’ in many Court cases. In one case in south Wales, Dafydd gave evidence in the case of a solicitor who had raped someone, maintaining that he was suffering from ‘PTSD’. Dafydd’s evidence resulted in this rapist avoiding a prison sentence. After the case it was revealed that this rapist had a long history of doing very unpleasant nasty things to other people. However, Dafydd was sufficiently pleased with his work that as he left the Court, he gave a TV interview stating that he was glad that he had given evidence because if he hadn’t have done this, ‘someone would be in prison who should not have been in prison’. Well as far as I can see Dafydd, there are quite a lot of people in north Wales who should be in prison but are not in prison. There is ample space in HMP Berwyn but what’s the betting that their cells will fill up with people with mental health problems and drug issues?

Police 5

I have shamelessly stolen the title for this blog post from ‘Private Eye’, who had a long-running satirical column detailing controversies/misconduct in the UK police force, which did of course steal the title from the 60s TV show featuring Shaw Taylor. I’ve been motivated to write my own Police 5 post as a result of the many comments that people have made on the blog concerning their difficulties with the North Wales Police and the flurry of news stories about the police over the last few days.

The Daily Post have been reporting on a saga at the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), which involves two former officers from the North Wales Police. One of the people concerned, a Steve Curtis, is a former acting Assistant Chief Constable of the North Wales Police and more latterly was the HR and Operations Director for the BASC and is currently appearing at a tribunal claiming unfair dismissal by the BASC. It was revealed that he stands accused of swearing at and threatening to kill someone – Mr Curtis claims to be deeply ashamed of himself for having done this and has apologised to the man whom he threatened to kill. The story seems a rather complicated one and involves another former North Wales police officer, Gary Ashton, who also worked for the BASC and made a complaint of bullying against the man who later complained about Steve Curtis threatening to kill him http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/axed-north-wales-gun-club-12676384 There certainly seems to have been a lot of infighting at the BASC involving these two former policemen.

My interest was aroused in this article by the references to Mr Curtis being a former acting Assistant Chief Constable. Some years ago I was told that the former Chief Constable of North Wales, Richard Brunstrom, had allegedly sacked two acting Assistant Chief Constables for corruption. I was told that one of these people was Elfed Roberts, who later became the Chairman of the North West Wales NHS Trust (Elfed and his wrongdoing in that particular role have featured on this blog previously) and a member of the governing body at Bangor University (I understand that Elfed is a member of the University’s ‘fair practice’ committee no less). I do not know who the other person involved was, but I’m wondering if it was Steve Curtis – if any readers have any info on this, I’d be most interested to hear it.

Then another report appeared in the Daily Post, this time featuring Arfon Jones, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/axed-north-wales-gun-club-12676384  Arfon was ‘slamming’ and ‘hitting out at’ Simon Bailey, head of Operation Hydrant and the National Police Chief’s Council lead for child protection, who has argued that not everyone viewing indecent images of children should be prosecuted. Arfon has not minced his words in response to this. He has stated that ‘anybody…committing offences of this nature…should feel the full force of the law and be prosecuted’, that ‘child sexual exploitation is a vile crime committed by dangerous and devious people who come from every section of society…leading outwardly respectable lives’ and that ‘paedophiles are becoming increasingly sophisticated’. Arfon has stated that the North Wales Police have established a Paedophile Online Investigation Team, based at St Asaph.

Followers of this blog will have read my previous post about Arfon and will already know his background, but for the sake of new readers, here are two interesting facts about our Police and Crime Commissioner. At the trial of Gordon Anglesea, the former senior police officer with the North Wales Police who in 2016 was imprisoned for child sexual abuse but has since died, it was revealed that a junior police officer used to drive Anglesea to the building where he molested youngsters but was not instructed to return to pick him up again. The officer did this without questioning why Anglesea never required collecting. That junior police officer was one Arfon Jones. After Anglesea died in prison, there was an outcry when it emerged that his widow would still receive 50% of his police pension. That happened because of an ‘oversight’ by the Police and Crime Commissioner – one Arfon Jones.

Regarding Arfon’s harsh words for paedophiles and his reference to the crack squad in North Wales formed to fight this menace – the Waterhouse Report named Lucille Hughes, Director of Gwynedd Social Services, as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in the social services but failing to act. Lucille Hughes now sits on the Board of Trustees of CAIS, the ‘substance abuse’ charity. That’s the same CAIS that employs Clive Wolfendale, the former Deputy Chief Constable of North Wales Police, as it’s CEO. Shaw Taylor’s catch-phrase in the original Police 5 used to be ‘keep ’em peeled’. Well you don’t need to keep ’em peeled in north Wales,  its common knowledge who have facilitated paedophiles (or in Anglesea’s case who actually were paedophiles). They certainly are ‘leading outwardly respectable lives’, although I’m not sure that they’re becoming ‘increasingly sophisticated’ – have a look at this photo of Lucille Hughes, there’s no way that wig that she’s wearing is in any way sophisticated http://www.cais.co.uk/personel/board/

Lastly, today BBC News Wales reported that Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) have reported on the police forces of England and Wales and that the North Wales Police have been rated as ‘good’ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-39131441 Which is certainly interesting because as far as I am aware, there has just been a substantial investigation into corruption in the North Wales Police.  Arfon Jones, our Police and Crime Commissioner, has commented that the inspection results will provide ‘reassurance to the people of north Wales’. I’m not sure that it does actually Arfon – the message that I’m getting is that HMIC is probably operating on a similar basis to the bodies that are responsible for inspecting the NHS and social service depts and who manage to give glowing reports to very troubled services ie. the people doing the inspecting probably have close connections to the people that they are inspecting, probably get given a good dinner before the inspection is undertaken and thus manage not to notice that patients are dying and children are being abused.

It’s Those Experts From The Betsi Again!

Whilst exploring the internet yesterday I found a blog written by one Prof Rob Poole. Readers may remember that Poole has featured in my previous posts ‘Service User Involvement In North Wales’ and ‘Experts In Suicide Prevention’. Recent posts have discussed all the award winning expertise that practitioners in north Wales (particularly those involved with mental health research) claim to have and how this is strangely inconsistent with what has gone on, and continues to go on, in the NHS in north Wales. So I thought that readers might be usefully introduced to Poole’s blog.

The page of Rob’s blog that really interests me is this one, his ‘professional profile’ http://www.cfmhas.org.uk/profiles/rob-poole/

Regular readers of my own blog will notice that Rob has co-authored a number of papers with a familiar name – one R.S. Sambhi. Yes, Rob has been working with Raj Sambhi, whose activities featured on my previous posts ‘A Tale Worthy of Enid Blyton’ and ‘Five Dig Further Into The Heddfan Unit’, the Sambhi who sections people and diagnoses ‘severe mental illness’ if they maintain that there is neglect and abuse happening in the mental health system in north Wales and that a paedophile ring operated in north Wales. I see that Rob has also co-authored a research report with Clive Wolfendale – that will be the Clive Wolfendale who is a leading light in CAIS, the charity established and chaired by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, another name that will be familiar to readers of my blog. And a participant in one of Rob’s ‘recent presentations’ was none other than Dr Richard Tranter, lately of the Hergest Unit!

Poole describes himself as ‘Co-Director’ of the ‘Centre For Mental Health and Society’ at Bangor University, which was established in 2012. Once more I urge readers to reflect on the state of mental health care in north Wales – so what exactly have Poole and his ‘Centre’ been doing for the last five years?  This blog has previously mentioned the dysfunctional relationships that exist between people working in the mental health services in north Wales. I note that some of Dr David Healy’s past blog posts are very rude about Rob and his Centre – Healy maintains that this Centre is being funded by the Betsi and questions Poole’s academic credentials. This is fascinating – I sat in a research meeting with Poole a few years ago, whilst Poole presented an idea for a research project that he was going to submit to the Betsi for funding. The work that he was proposing was not original and a virtually identical study had been published by a team from Canada some years earlier. I told Poole this, but it certainly didn’t put him off. He was then asked by someone else why he was requesting funding from the Betsi, not one of the big research councils. Unable to bear Poole’s pompousing any longer, I suggested that he was approaching the Betsi for funding because he would never get it from a research council. He admitted that this was indeed true. If readers can steel themselves to read other parts of Poole’s blog, they will notice that he brags about landing his first academic post at an age when most people retire. So it would seem that Poole had spent an entire career as a mediocre psychiatrist, latterly in north Wales, and upon retirement, despite having no substantial academic reputation, landed a Chair in Mental Health at Glyndwr University, which if David Healy is to be believed (although admittedly Healy can’t always be believed) was facilitated by the Betsi. Que??? (There has of course been much gnashing of teeth recently regarding the LSE awarding Angelina Jolie a Chair – Angelina may be an air-head but at least she’s not an integral part of a mental health service which is neglecting and abusing the patients.) Once more, someone promoted as an ‘expert’ on the north Wales mental health scene (and who has been touting himself as an ‘expert’ around India as well) seems to have only achieved this status via funding and facilitation from the Betsi itself and who seems to have very close working relationships with other ‘experts’ from the Betsi who have also been involved in neglecting and abusing mental health patients. What is this, Hell’s Cesspool?

Now look closely at Rob’s list of ‘Appointments’ – ‘Honorary Research Lead, National Centre for Mental Health, Wales’; ‘Chair, Executive Committee, Royal College of Psychiatrists, Wales 2012-16’; ‘Vice-President, Royal College of Psychiatrists, November 2015-July 2016’.

Houston – we have a VERY big problem…

Meanwhile of course, the mental health patients in north Wales kept on – and keep on – dying…

Now For – ‘The Serenity Programme’

Whilst doing some research for future blog posts today, I stumbled across something else that, like Parabl, had until now escaped my attention (please see blog post ‘Newly Discovered – ‘Parab’!’). This is – ‘The Serenity Programme’, which is brought to us by Steve Cottrell, who describes himself as a mental health nurse in north Wales http://serene.me.uk/
Although The Serenity Programme is being promoted as ‘therapy’, as with Parabl, there are not many therapists involved. Once more, we are taken into the realms of CCBT – ie. CBT via computer. (I note that there is a link to Parabl on The Serenity Programme’s website.) The Serenity Programme advertises itself as being for people with stress, anxiety and depression. As with Parabl, the website is littered with alleged comments from unidentified people at various locations in north Wales telling the world how great The Serenity Programme is. The Serenity Programme’s website has links to some very cheap and cheerful ‘psychological tests’ and a brief ‘self-help programme’. But scroll through to the end of the spiel on the website – and you’ll find a little note explaining that The Serenity Programme isn’t meant to take the place of face to face contact with a health professional – readers are told that if they are seeking health advice or are in crisis or seeking urgent help they should contact NHS Direct or the Samaritans. So as with Parabl, it doesn’t look as though the Serenity Programme is going to be offering any help to anyone who might actually need it.
Despite these severe limitations, Steve Cottrell proudly boasts of all the awards that The Serenity Programme has clocked up – Welsh Innovations In Healthcare, British Journal of Nursing Clinical Practice, Royal College of Nursing, Best Mental Health Nursing Project In Wales, Bevan Institute Prize for Health and Well-Being and Fab NHS Stuff. There’s even a photo of Steve meeting Gordon Brown at a Downing Street reception! Do any of these people know that The Serenity Programme is not actually offering any help to anyone in distress? And do they know what is going on in the mental health services in north Wales (sadly, I suspect that some of them do, but they’ve decided not to delve too deeply into that particular can of worms). Steve also lists a number of people whom he thanks for having helped develop The Serenity Programme – there are a few familiar names here: Dr David Crossley (a psychiatrist employed by the Betsi who trained at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, who will be featuring on this blog soon), Dr Rob Poole (another psychiatrist at the Betsi who features in blog posts ‘Service User Involvement In North Wales’ and ‘Experts in Suicide Prevention??’), Robin Holden (former Denbigh nurse, former senior nurse manager at the Hergest Unit and now I see ‘MIND Executive’ too (please see blog post ‘The Mysterious Silence of MIND’ and ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’), Clive Wolfendale of Parabl (Clive is also the most senior manager in the organisation that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones founded and still chairs, CAIS), Sean Clarke (that’s the man at the Betsi who commissioned Parabl and also doubles up as Clinical Programme Manager, Primary Care and Psychological Therapies at the Betsi), Dr Seren Roberts (who I think is a former Denbigh nurse as well) etc etc. Steve mentions that The Serenity Programme was developed in partnership with Aberconwy MIND – why are we not surprised?
After reading all this vacuous guff from the Award-winning, Prime Minister-meeting, Fab NHS Stuff-producing Steve, I’d nearly had enough, but thought that I’d better click on the menu provided on the website in case there were further horrors for me to discover. I wasn’t disappointed.
Clicking on ‘Cwm Taf First Steps’ on the menu led me to yet another programme for people with stress, anxiety, low mood and indeed ‘low self-esteem’. Once more, this is not for people who are a risk to themselves or others or who lack ‘motivation, concentration or energy’ ie. anyone who might be seriously ill. First Steps is an ‘educational programme’ with ‘telephone support’ – and yes, computerised CBT, what else?? I note that the ‘telephone support’ is certainly brief (15-30 mins or so) and further digging suggests that those on the end of the telephone are not actually therapists at all. This becomes obvious if you download the ‘helpers resources’ from the site – these are a series of very basic powerpoint presentations that would not fool anyone who had received training in psychotherapy. I was interested to read on one of the helper’s presentations that it was stated that ‘if people can fall in love in chatrooms, by letter, or by e mail, then the medium can sustain a relationship and allow therapeutic, affective (sic) work’. Now what often happens when people fall in love in chatrooms, by letter or by e mail? THEY GET SWINDLED BY CONMEN….
There is loads more nonsense on the other powerpoint presentations available to download, but the powerpoint tantalisingly entitled ‘War and Peace’ excels. Within this, there claims to be ‘A Brief History of Violence’ which seems to involve a whole series of crude racial and gender stereotypes, some very dodgy misunderstood archaeology and anthropology, and photos of ‘Neanderthal man’ that are so ridiculous that I began to wonder whether this whole website was a spoof. It seems that ‘War and Peace’ is a conference presentation on anger for the Betsi by Steve Cottrell…
So this is what the NHS deems worthy of awards – and Steve gets to live it up at Downing Street whilst patients continue to die.
