Conference At Cold Comfort Farm

Whilst searching for more information regarding matters such as the sorry state of the UK’s prisons and miscarriages of justice recently, I came across a news report from 1997 which stated that paedophile gangs were operating within prisons. What had happened was that paedophiles had been sentenced, but then their young victims had ended up in prison alongside their assailants, after the victims had been criminalised and jailed for less serious offences. That was certainly what seemed to be happening at Risley Remand Centre back in the 1980s.

No matter how many shock horror reports, no matter how many lessons will be learned, pledges for change etc, matters in the prison service and mental health services do not ever improve, even in the face of so much ‘expertise’. I maintain that it is because everyone who would implement change is excluded at a junior level. There are no original thinkers in the pool from which the ‘leaders’ and ‘advisers’ are drawn. The ‘leaders’ have only made it into the selection pool by spending their careers keeping quiet about abuse and wrongdoing. Not that Gov’t wants anyone who will expose the rot. The structure is so threadbare that if one gave a loose thread a tug, the whole system would unravel.

Those who are going to effect change are also drawn from a pool of people with remarkably similar backgrounds and CVs. So I thought that in this post I’d take a look at some of those who’s vision was going to effect change in the prison system.

When the Indie reported on the paedophile gangs operating within prisons, David Ramsbotham was HMI Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales. Ramsbotham was in post 1995-01.

David Ramsbotham was the son of a clergyman, John Ramsbotham, who became the Bishop of Wakefield, retiring in 1967. John Ramsbotham is one of the generation of senior clergyman whom we now know colluded with a massive child abuse problem within the Church of England.

David Ramsbotham was educated at Haileybury and the Imperial Service College. Ramsbotham entered the Army to do National Service and was commissioned into the Royal Artillary in 1953. After National Service, he retained a TA commission and then completed a degree at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

In 1958 Ramsbotham was appointed to a regular Army commission. He served in Borneo during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation, Dec 1965-66. By 1971 Ramsbotham had achieved the rank of Lt Col and from 1970-73 he served as Military Assistant to the Chief of the General Staff, Sir (Later Lord) Field Marshal Michael Carver. Ramsbotham commanded a battalion of the Royal Green Jackets in N Ireland from 1974-75. By the end of 1978, Ramsbotham had achieved the rank of Brigadier and served again in N Ireland, commanding a brigade based in Belfast from June 1978 and was appointed CBE for his service there in the operational honours of Oct 1980.

David Ramsbotham will know a great deal about shoot to kill, the torture and sometimes murder of suspects, the law breaking that was associated with internment, the miscarriages of justice in N Ireland, the internal wars between different factions of the security services and of course the identity of those who were abusing boys at the Kincora Boys Home, as well as about the activities of the paedophile child psychiatrist who was linked to Kincora, Dr Morris Fraser, who was afforded complete protection by the British establishment.

As the British Army’s Director of PR, 1982–84, Ramsbotham leaked documents to a journalist which showed that prior to the Falklands War, the Army had developed a comprehensive plan for dealing with the media, but it had been overlooked; the Army was subsequently criticised for not having done such planning.

Ramsbotham commanded the 3rd Armoured Division for a period prior to March 1987. In April 1987 he was appointed Commander UK Field Army and Inspector General of the TA.

Ramsbotham stepped down as Commander of the Field Army in August 1990 and received a further honorary appointment as ADC Gen to Lilibet on 3 Dec 1990, which he held until his retirement from the Army. On 27 December 1990 Ramsbotham was appointed Adjutant-General. This period included the UK involvement in the Gulf War; he retired from the Army in July 1993. In Dec 1995 Ramsbotham became Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales.

Ramsbotham had a ‘strained relationship’ with the Home Secretaries in office during his tenure – Michael Howard and Jack Straw – and this contributed to his contract not being continued for the full eight years that had originally been possible.

In 2005 Ramsbotham was given a peerage and he sits as a crossbencher.  Ramsbotham is Chairman of the Koestler Awards scheme as well as Vice-Chair of both the All Party Penal Affairs Group and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Learning and Skills in the Criminal Justice System. He is President of UNLOCK, the National Association of Ex-Offenders and an Ambassador for the Prison Advice and Care Trust (PACT). Ramsbotham is a Trustee and Vice-Chairman of the charity Institute for Food, Brain and Behaviour.

The primary focus of the Institute for Food, Brain and Behaviour (IFBB) is the commissioning of research into how food, nutrition and diet can affect brain function and behaviour. Former Trustees include Hugh Montefiore, the 3rd Earl Henry Kitchener, Baroness Susan Greenfield and Rev Nicholas Frayling.

Hugh Montefiore, Chairman and Trustee of the IFBB, was Bishop of Kingston-upon-Thames, 1970-78 and then Bishop of Birmingham, 1978-87. Nicholas Frayling is also a clergyman who worked in Peckham, Tooting and Liverpool when organised trafficking gangs operated in those areas. Montefiore and Frayling must have known at least something of what was going on.

Susan Greenfield spent a few years as the media’s idea of a wonderful advert for wimmin in science and there were many articles published about the feminist scientist who wore leather and short skirts. Greenfield played the journos for all that she could, most of them had no knowledge of pharmacology or biochemistry and obviously saw Greenfield as some sort of Einstein. Greenfield’s colleagues are less wowed and she has stood accused of publishing theories without the evidence to back them up. Susan Greenfield was appointed Director of the Royal Institution in 1998 and more gushing articles followed. Within a few short years there was the most enormous ding dong, with Greenfield being accused of complete incompetence and wasting millions of quid and Greenfield responding that her accusers were a bunch of old farts in possession of testicles. Then the writs began flying. Whatever went on must have been really bad because the post of Director of the Royal Institution was subsequently abolished, just in case Susan came back again.

After the disaster at the Royal Institution, Susan rocked up in the Lords as a people’s peer. When reading about Susan, I had the most terrible shock. I thought that Blair rang up his mates to invite them to become people’s peers, but it’s worse than that. People’s peers are ‘self-nominated’, as indeed was Susan. No wonder the people’s peers are all narcissistic loonies, they’ve applied to be peers themselves, they haven’t even been chosen. So that’s why the Lords is now so obviously the House of the Sharp-Elbowed and Mediocre. I think that I might contact hundreds of dinner ladies, cleaners and service users and encourage them all to nominate themselves as people’s peers. They can bang on about empowering wimmin just as well as Susan Greenfield can and they’ll be able to cook a dinner for a family of five at the same time.

Lord Henry Kitchener, former President and Trustee of the IFBB, was a physicist who spent most of his working life with ICI in Cheshire and was President of the Organic Food Society. He was a Freemason who was initiated in 1947 and rose to senior rank, serving as Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England. In 1972 Lord Kitchener was Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire. Which rather puts him at the scene of the crimes and cover-up re Dafydd, Sir Peter Morrison and the gang. Kitchener was a friend of Bertrand Russell’s son Lord Conrad Russell (see post ‘So Who Was Angry About What?’). Bertrand Russell spent the last 25 years of his life living in north Wales and was friends with the Welsh Bloomsbury set based at Cwm Croesor who knew about Gwynne, Dafydd and the gang (see post ‘The Village’).

Henry Kitchener was a Page of Honour at the coronation of George VI. His niece Emma Joy Kitchener, a Lady-in-Waiting to HRH Princess Michael of Kent, married Julian Fellowes of gratuitous snobbery and ‘Downton Abbey’ fame. In 1998 the Fellowes family changed its surname from Fellowes to Kitchener-Fellowes, because that sounds even posher and it also means that now Julian Fellowes can stress that he’s related to Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, the butcher of WWI and inventor of the concentration camp.

Henry was known to have explained to people that an hereditary peerage was much better than a mere life peerage and that he took his right to sit in the Lords very seriously, although by his own admission he was ‘just too lazy’ to attend the Lords much before his retirement.

Every little helps – there’s a paedophile gang with links to Parliament and the Royal Family to be concealed!

Because Henry Kitchener was unmarried with no male heirs, his title died with him in 2011. Julian Fellowes was outraged at this waste of a good Earldom and publicly expressed his dissatisfaction that the proposals to change the rules of royal succession were not extended to hereditary peerages, which had they been would have allowed his wife to succeed her uncle as The Countess Kitchener. Emma was in danger of remaining plain old Lady Fellowes – or perhaps Lady Kitchener-Fellowes because of course they’d changed their name – as a result of being married to Lord Julian, only a life peer himself. Which is so naff that one might as well be in trade. Here he is, common as muck:

The Lord Fellowes of West Stafford

Fellowes stated: “I find it ridiculous that, in 2011, a perfectly sentient adult woman has no rights of inheritance whatsoever when it comes to a hereditary title”. Fortunately for Julian and Emma, Lilibet came to the rescue. On 9 May 2012, Lilibet issued a Royal Warrant of Precedence granting Lady Emma the same rank and style as the daughter of an Earl, as would have been due to her if her late father had survived his brother and therefore succeeded to the earldom. Specifically it declared that Lady Fellowes “shall henceforth have, hold and enjoy the same title, rank, place, pre-eminence and precedence as a daughter of an Earl” and “succeeded to the title and dignity of Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and Broome.”

Much as I am touched by the sudden outburst of the desire for gender equality on the part of Julian Fellowes and Lilibet, where ‘dignity’ enters into the hissy fit of a man who writes laughable dramas for TV because he has realised that his wife cannot inherit the title of a man who concealed the crimes of Dafydd, I cannot imagine. Now how was that well-known Women’s Libber Lilibet persuaded to intervene in this matter I wonder?

‘These women are only bloody feminists because they’re too fat and ugly to get a man.’

IFBB’s Science Fellows include Kathleen Taylor, a neuroscientist based at Oxford University. One of Taylor’s research areas is ‘the neuroscience of belief’. I wish you all the best with that one Kathleen, perhaps your research will equal that of some of your colleagues who have told us all that MRI scans show which parts of the brain are responsible for ‘love’ and ‘compassion’ and how these areas experience increased activity after the owners of the brains have done a bit of Mindfulness. Look, the brain areas are lighting up! The MRI scanning machines are obviously in on Prof Mark Williams’s research fraud as well then (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’).

Kathleen’s 2004 book ‘Brainwashing: The Science of Thought Control’ was shortlisted by MIND for their 2005 ‘book of the year’. In 2005 MIND were concealing the abuse and deaths of patients at the Hergest Unit in Ysbyty Gwynedd, as well as in other institutions. Both National MIND were involved, as were MIND Cymru. I rang MIND Cymru in 2005 and told one Ruth Coombs, who I think was their Director of Policy, that I had evidence of the serious abuse of mental health patients in Wales. She was all ears and asked me where. I replied ‘the Hergest Unit’ and I heard her whisper ‘Oh my God’ before putting the phone down on me. Ruth subsequently became Director of MIND Cymru and then the Head of the British Heart Foundation in Wales. See post ‘The Mysterious Silence Of MIND’.

Ruth Coombs has climbed ever higher and is now ‘Head of Wales’ no less at the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Ruth has worked in partnership with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales to produce an ‘anti-bullying resource’ for use in secondary schools in Wales. MIND Cymru recently featured on TV in Wales as being an organisation with a serious workplace bullying problem. This blog also received accounts and evidence of bullying and misconduct from horrified former MIND Cymru staff (see post ‘A Solicitor’s Letter From North East Wales MIND’) and I was subsequently harassed and threatened by MIND Cymru as they tried to force me to remove my posts about them.

Robin Holden, a man with a very cosy relationship with Dafydd who formerly worked as an Angel at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and as a senior manager for the Gwynedd Community Health Trust whilst patients died and were fitted up for crimes by the staff and when serious complaints when uninvestigated and documentation was forged, is now an executive with MIND Cymru (see post ‘A Solicitor’s Letter From North East Wales MIND’).

The Office of Children’s Commissioner for Wales was established on the recommendation of no less than that of Sir Ronald Waterhouse. Since it’s creation it has been managed and run substantially by paedophiles’ friends. One senior social worker employed by the Children’s Commissioner was the daughter of an Angel at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh who had been a close friend of Dafydd’s daughter when they were teenagers. See post ‘Yet More Inglorious Bastards’.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has a long and proud tradition of appointing Commissioners who have presided over the abuse of vulnerable people, such as Dr Rachel Perkins (see post ‘BMA Calling, BMA Calling’), who was the Clinical Director of Springfield Hospital when that hospital colluded with Dafydd and the paedophiles in north Wales and concealed another linked paedophile gang in south London (see posts ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London…’ and ‘The Most Dangerous Man In the World – Part III’).

Kathleen Taylor’s 2009 book, ‘Cruelty: Human Evil and the Human Brain’ examined human cruelty from ‘the points of view of biology and sociology’. Whereas this blog has examined human cruelty as inflicted by MIND and the many people with who’s crimes MIND have colluded or concealed.

The Institute for Food, Brain and Behaviour seems to have spent some years disguised as something else. It began life in 1984 as South Cumbria Alternative Sentencing Options. It was founded to investigate whether nutrition could play a role in minimising recidivism in young offenders, but that aim doesn’t readily come to mind if one talks of ‘alternative sentencing options’. The organisation became Natural Justice in 1991, which again does not sound as though it is an organisation investigating links between nutrition and offending behaviour. Natural Justice metamorphosed into the Institute for Food, Brain and Behaviour (IFBB) in 2010.

The Institute has a collaborative research programme with Oxford University. It facilitated a £1.4 million research project in three prisons funded by the Wellcome Trust. The Wellcome Trust funded Professor Mark Williams and Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore to conduct a big Mindfulness research project. Sarah-Jayne is the helpful neuroscientist upon whom Mark Williams is relying to give Mindfulness scientific credibility. Sarah-Jayne’s dad is the Oxford Professor Colin Blakemore, who was formerly Chief Executive of the MRC, which gives Oxford University a great deal of funding. Colin Blakemore had to wait a very long time for his knighthood because his animal work was felt to be so gratuitously cruel, even by other researchers carrying out animal work. For further details of Sarah-Jayne and Colin Blakemore’s network, see post ‘They Are MYRIAD, They Are Legion’.

The Wellcome funded study for the IFBB commenced in Jan 2008 with Professor John Stein –  a Trustee of the IFBB and Chair of the IFBB’s Science Advisory Council – of Oxford University as Principal Investigator. John Stein was the PhD supervisor of Daniel Wolpert, who was the PhD supervisor of Sarah-Jayne Blakemore (see post ‘They Are MYRIAD, They Are Legion’). Sarah-Jayne Co-directs the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme at UCL.

The Institute has been carrying out a study at Robert Clack School into whether nutritional supplements can improve disadvantaged pupils’ cognitive skills and behaviour, funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. I suspect that John Stein might find that a range of cultural and socio-economic factors may be playing a part in the cognitive skills and behaviour of disadvantaged pupils, as well as in how ‘cognitive skills and behaviour’ are being defined.

Prof John Stein came under fire in 2008 during that row when Gordon Brown was PM about the girl from Newcastle, Laura Spence, who had been turned down for a place to read medicine at Oxford despite a string of As at A level. Laura went to university in the US in the end. John Stein angrily denied that Oxford had discriminated against Laura, a state school pupil and maintained that he and his colleagues had been working very hard to welcome state school pupils at Oxford. Laura’s rejection was most likely simply a result of the huge numbers of very well-qualified students applying for a place at Oxford for medicine. Although I don’t believe that most Oxford admissions tutors do actively discriminate against state school pupils and it is true that more state school pupils are indeed entering Oxford, they are nearly always state school pupils who’s parents are professional middle class people, often academics. Students like Sarah-Jayne Blakemore was.

If John Stein wants more genuinely disadvantaged students to benefit from an Oxford education, he’d do better addressing the variety of interacting socio-economic and cultural factors that excludes those students rather than wasting his time giving them food supplements. That will boost the profits of Holland and Barrett, but I doubt that it will change the social profile of Oxford undergrads.

Lots of fish oil, that’s what the lower classes need. Then they’d all be as clever as Sarah-Jayne Blakemore. They’re only held back because they do insist on eating Big Macs and chips, Jamie Oliver will confirm that, whilst he insults their mothers at the same time for not feeding their offspring the sort of delicacies that Buddy Bear and his siblings enjoy.

In 1999, when Jamie was riding high on the success of his TV programme Two Fat Hairy Naked Chefs, Jamie was invited to cook Tony Blair a dinner at No 10. So that is why Tony Blair’s kids have done so well for themselves, it was the quality of the grub that the family were served by Jamie! Euan Blair bagged an internship at the Whitehouse, subsequently pursued a career in the City and is the proud joint owner of a house worth £3.6 million. Bloody hell Jamie, you must have put something special in Blair’s dinner. It was revealed in the media that Cherie is the joint owner of Euan’s house, rather than Euan’s wife Suzanne. That’ll be because Suzanne once ate a Penguin biscuit.

Jamie Oliver went to Newport Free Grammar School and left with two GCSEs. He went on to Westminster Technical College, where he gained an NVQ in home economics. Well that’s curious Jamie, because I went to a troubled shite comprehensive school, but I ended up with O levels, A levels, a BSc, an MSc and a PhD. I’ve never been fed food supplements and I didn’t grow up in a household which possessed items of expensive kitchen machinery, but I was surrounded by books and people who discussed politics. I wonder if there could be a link. It’s called ‘cultural capital’ Professor Stein and Jamie, Pierre Bourdieu wrote about it years ago before people worked so hard to blame disadvantaged people for their own disadvantage.

John Stein’s brother is the celebrity chef Rick Stein. I did wonder if Rick flogged food supplements, but a quick look at his wiki entry reveals that he actually owns a few fish and chip shops.

On the topic of Oxford entry, I wonder if John Stein can solve a puzzle. Back in the mid-1980s, there was a lot of huffing and puffing in the media regarding certain schools having reserved places at Oxford. Oxford angrily denied any such practice, maintaining that was only back in the Olden Days and things were different now. The year that this row blew up was the very same year that Brown’s cousin applied to read law at Oxford. She didn’t get the place that she wanted, but was subsequently offered a place to do theology instead, which confused me, because she had not shown the slightest interest in theology. It was explained by Brown’s uncle and auntie that Brown’s cousin’s school had a reserved place at Oxford, but it was for theology and it had been offered to her. The school in question was Tiffin Girls’ in Kingston-upon-Thames. Tiffin Girls’ still has an excellent track record for getting pupils into Oxbridge.

Alderman Roberts probably sold them in that grocer’s shop in Grantham that we heard so much about from Thatch.

The Patron of the IFBB is the restaurateur and chef Prue Leith. Leith grew up in South Africa and her father worked for and became a Director of African Explosives, a subsidiary of ICI producing dynamite for use in mines. In 1975, Leith founded Prue Leith’s School of Food and Wine, of which Caroline Waldegrave is Managing Director. Caroline is married to William Waldegrave, who’s OK by Julian Fellowes, being the son of the 12th Earl Waldegrave. William Waldegrave was Secretary of State for Health, 1990-92 and while in that post he covered up the barrel of shit which was Dafydd and the paedophile gang and the linked gang in south London which was concealed by St George’s Hospital Medical School/Springfield Hospital. Waldegrave was the Tory MP for Bristol West. That must have been very useful for Dr D.G.E. Wood, Dafydd’s partner in crime who came from the Bristol area, qualified from Bristol University and who’s father was a Top Doc who continued to live near Bristol long after Wood himself had settled in north Wales to follow a life of serious organised crime. Waldegrave’s sister is Lady Susan Hussey, Lady-in-Waiting to Lilibet and Godmother to Prince William. The Lady Susan was married to Marmaduke Hussey, whom Thatch appointed Chairman of the BBC to sort out the pinkos there. Duke Hussey was Chairman when my friend, a witness to the wrongdoing in north Wales, was forced out of his job at the BBC, while Waldegrave was Health Secretary (see post ‘The Turn Of The Screw’).

In his autobiography, ‘A Different Kind Of Weather’, Waldegrave banged on about his noble ancestors and his bitter regret that he never became PM. Presumably this aristocratic complete scumbag who ignored the most serious crime in the NHS and social services thought that he would have done a so much better job than the scumbag who was the petit bourgeois grocer’s daughter or the scumbag who was the son of the circus performer from Brixton who ignored the same serious crime.

In Matthew Parris’s article for ‘The Spectator’ in which he reviews Waldegrave’s autobiography, Parris mentions that he and Waldegrave were elected to the Commons at the same time in 1979. Parris wrote: ‘That old charmer Edward du Cann, to whom in the days after William and I had been elected in 1979 I once confided my feelings of hurt when criticised, put a hand on my wrist. ‘Dear boy,’ he said, ‘nice people are always hurt.’

Edward du Cann was the Conservative MP for Taunton, 1956-87 and was highly influential in the Tory Party as a result of his position as Chairman of the Tory Party, 1965-67 and as Chairman of the Party’s 1922 Committee, 1972-84. Du Cann was a very rich man whom my grandfather always claimed was a crook. Du Cann was criticized as “incompetent” by a 1974 DTI report regarding the bankruptcy of Keyser Ullman bank, of which du Cann was a Director. In 1973, Keyser Ullman lent £17m to a 28 year old entrepreneur, Christopher Selmes, secured on a valueless guarantee. Mr Selmes later fled the country, leaving debts of more than £20m. The bankruptcy of Keyser Ullman was the only reason why du Cann did not put himself forward as a candidate in the Tory leadership contest against Thatcher, du Cann being yet another mediocrity who fancied himself as a future PM and had led the rout against Ted Heath, initially under the guise of robustly supporting Thatch for the leadership. Peter Morrison was a leading light in encouraging Thatch to run for the leadership.

Du Cann succeeded Duncan Sandys as Chairman of Lonrho in 1984, a position from which he was forced to resign in 1991 due to his role as Deputy Chairman of Homes Assured, a finance company which crashed. His resignation came two days before the company collapsed, owing £10 million to creditors. The Serious Fraud Office began an inquiry. Du Cann was involved in several legal disputes over debts. His Somerset estate Cothay Manor was repossessed in 1992 and his London flat in Tufton Street in Westminster was repossessed in 1993. In 1985-86, the Eagle Star insurance company began proceedings three times to repossess Cothay Manor. The amount was paid each time and the mortgage later discharged.

Between 1980 and 1993 there were at least seven writs against du Cann for late payment of bills, including failure to pay water rates, to pay commission on the sale of a yacht, to keep up his mortgage payments and to clear a £137,000 overdraft.

Du Cann had a bankruptcy order served against him in 1993 and lived for several years in Alderney on the Isle of Wight. So one wonders how du Cann then subsequently wound up living in Lemona in Cyprus with enough dosh to invest in a vineyard.

Here are some clues:

On 26 March 1993 the Indie reported that du Cann had applied to have the bankruptcy order against him lifted. The order was made in the London Bankruptcy Court on 12 March 1993 on a petition over unpaid bills by the solicitors Denton Hall Burgin & Warren, who used to act for du Cann. Because of that order, an Inland Revenue petition for unpaid taxes became a formality on 25 March 1993 and was automatically dismissed at a brief private hearing before Registrar Geoffrey Pimm in London on 25 March 1993. Both the Inland Revenue and the law firm had filed their petitions in Jan 1993. Du Cann told ‘The Independent’ on 25 March that his solicitors would be applying to have the bankruptcy order lifted in the next few days.

A curious article in the ‘Sunday Herald’, 18 July 1995, about du Cann mentioned his long and glorious life – he was by the 71 yrs old – his service in the Royal Naval Reserve in the 1940s, his former close relationship to Ted Heath and his numerous dodgy deals and friendships with the rich and famous. It was explained that du Cann’s wife Jen had recently died, that du Cann was living on the Isle of Wight in reduced circumstances and was unhappy at the way that the Tory Party was ‘being run’. Du Cann told the ‘Sunday Herald’ that he had a lot to tell and he would be telling it.

In July 1995, Nicola Davies QC was supposedly reviewing the paperwork relating to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal to determine whether a Public Inquiry was needed. Although Dame Nicola stated in Dec 1995 that a Public Inquiry would not be in the public interest, by summer 1995, Sir Ronald Waterhouse had altered his retirement plans and had embarked on a tour of the paedophiles’ friends in Cheshire and Wales who were responsible for so much of the parts of the infrastructure which allowed the abuse of children in Cheshire/north Wales to occur, infrastructure which was to feature in Ronnie’s subsequent Inquiry, which was announced by William Hague on 17 June 1996.

By July 1995 Dafydd et al in north Wales were moving heaven and earth in an attempt to demonstrate that I was so dangerous that I should be banged up in a secure hospital on their say so without the inconvenience of a trial, having failed dismally in their serial attempts to have me imprisoned by perjury, planting evidence etc.

Du Cann never did tell anyone anything, or at least if he did, whatever he told them received no publicity.

In Oct 2013 the ‘Cyprus Mail’ ran a feature on a long forgotten elderly English gentleman who had been living in Cyprus for the last 12 years and who’s previous as the Chief Exec of a a wine company with vineyards in the south of France had prompted him to ‘invest’ in Cyprus vine yards years previously. It was Edward du Cann. Du Cann told the ‘Cyprus Mail’ that he used to regularly visit the south of France to ‘inspect the vine yards’.

John Allen owned a villa in the south of France to which he took kids from the children’s homes of north Wales ‘on holiday’. Dafydd was a regular in the south of France as well, he ‘held clinics’ there.

For some years now Dr D.G.E. Wood has been ‘holding clinics’ in Cyprus.

Cheers, We’re as corrupt as fuck!

Dafydd’s mate and umbrella Professor Robert Bluglass has a second home in the Pyrenees. Which are located on the south west France/Spain border.

Du Cann was a board member of E-Clear, a British payment processing company, which went into administration in Jan 2010. He married three times; first, in 1962, to Sally (a cousin), whom he divorced in 1987, then he was married to Jennifer until her death in 1995. Du Cann died in Aug 2017 and was survived by his third wife, Maureen Hope-Wynne. Perhaps Maureen could let us know whence that influx of dosh came which refloated the Good Ship du Cann after his bankruptcy and public disgrace. Maureen might also tell us why Sir Edward decided at some point in 1995 that he didn’t have anything to tell after all, even though he thought that he did. Unless William Hague wants to explain instead.

Sir Edward du Cann’s second wife Jen was the widow of Robert Cooke, who had been Waldegrave’s predecessor as the Tory MP for Bristol West. Cooke served as a councillor on Bristol City Council, 1954-57 and taught English at a Bristol public school. D.G.E. Wood went to a public school in or near Bristol, but I don’t know which one. A long standing loyal protector of Dafydd and the gang was Lord David Hunt. Hunt was MP for Wirral and then Wirral West, 1976-97 and served as a junior Minister in the Welsh Office and as Secretary of State for Wales twice. David Hunt did his law degree in Bristol and is of a similar vintage to D.G.E. Wood. Before Hunt was elected to the Commons, Lilibet gave him an MBE for services to politics in the west of England. I’d love to know what those services were. Lord Hunt continues to do his best for the paedophiles’ friends. Hunt’s international law firm DAC Beachcroft now works on behalf of Top Doctors who have found themselves in trouble.

One of Edward du Cann’s earliest scams was perpetrated when he was a Director of BAC (British Car Auctions), a company founded by David Wickins, alongside whom du Cann served in the Royal Naval Reserve. British Car Auctions group was the world’s biggest second-hand car business. David Wickins was a long-time friend and business associate of both Denis and Mark Thatcher.

BAC flourished first as Southern Counties Car Auctions, but soon outgrew the name as auction sites were opened throughout the country. Among regular sellers were the Post Office, the Ministry of Defence and the regional gas boards. Potential problems with buyers were overcome by selling vehicles only as seen on the most perfunctory inspection and enforcing a foolproof payment system. Wickins also bought up several car auction businesses in the US, building a highly profitable empire which was eventually selling a million cars a year.

Wickins’s long friendship with Denis Thatcher was cemented by golf and lubricated by gins and tonic in the Sunningdale clubhouse. Wickins was part-owner in a waste-disposal business called Attwoods, of which Denis was a Director, while BCA was a sponsor of Mark Thatcher’s short-lived motor racing career. It was Mark who introduced Wickins to Lotus in 1983.

Lotus was famed for financial instability as much as engineering excellence and was in deep trouble at the time. The company was losing money and its recently deceased founder Colin Chapman had been implicated in the DeLorean scandal: Lotus had undertaken a redesign contract for the ill-fated car project, based in N Ireland, from which large sums of money provided by Gov’t grants had disappeared. As a result, the company was besieged by Inland Revenue inspectors, who imposed an £84 million ‘protective assessment’.

Mark Thatcher arranged for Lotus’s Directors to meet Wickins, who took a 29 per cent stake, became Chairman, resisted the taxmen and brought in other investors, including the Bamford family. As demand for exotic cars grew with the 1980s boom Lotus’s fortunes swiftly recovered and in 1986 – again through Mark’s introduction – the business was sold to General Motors. In the meantime, Wickins gave Mark a job as a consultant to BCA’s American subsidiary, declaring that he was sure that Mark would be a great asset.

Favoured regulars attending Wickins’s car auctions were treated to lunch in his lavishly-appointed dining room overlooking the ring at Frimley, where the original field was developed into a multi-million-pound auction complex.

Upon leaving school, David Wickens took articles with the accountants Deloitte & Co, where he was posted to South Africa. There he worked on audits for Rhodesian copper mines and Zambian sawmills until the outbreak of war in 1939, when he enlisted in the South African Navy. After 18 months Wickens returned to England on secondment to the Royal Navy and brother officers Edward du Cann and the future entrepreneur and yachtsman Owen Aisher became lifelong friends.

At the end of the war Wickins was offered a permanent commission in the South African Navy, but he entered ‘business’ instead, in the auction trade and also in the buying, selling and floating of companies. Wickins assisted in the flotation of the Forte family’s catering and restaurant business and was a generous sponsor of sport, both of major events and of individual sportsmen such as the young Nick Faldo and the jockey Bob Champion. When BCA sponsored the Wightman Cup in 1989, the year of Wickins’s retirement, the Thatchers opened the doors of 10 Downing Street for a splendid party.

David Wickins also enjoyed racing International One design yachts and, later, motor cruising. He owned a string of racehorses and in retirement on Majorca he bred Great Danes.

Wickens was a ‘ladies’ man’ and employed ‘pretty girls’ as pilots for his helicopters and aircraft and as chauffeurs for his cars. He was married at least three times and possibly, although his own account varied, six.

When the wider world finally got a glimpse of the sort of man that Denis Thatcher was, many people were entertained to find that he was remarkably like the satirical portrayal of him in the ‘Dear Bill’ letters in ‘Private Eye’, a gin sodden golf club bore, who’s friend Maurice sold goods out of car boots. On one memorable occasion, Denis observed to Bill that ‘I had no idea that those friends of Maurice’s were in the Mafia’. Following the success of the ‘Dear Bill’ letters, in 1981 John Wells embarked upon his ‘Anyone for Denis?’ stage play, the catch phrase being ‘Stop me and buy me one’.

It was Richard Ingrams who wrote the ‘Dear Bill’ letters. I wonder if he based them on David Wickins.

As for William Waldegrave, the snooty aristo who did the dirty work of this collection of wide-boys, conmen and gangsters, he is constantly constructed as a being a man with great intellectual gifts. So Waldegrave hasn’t even got the excuse that he was as thick as Thatcher.

During the late 1980s and 90s, a number of people in Somerset who knew what was happening to me in north Wales, like Edward du Cann, inexplicably found themselves in possession of a great deal of money. I explained in my post ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’ that some of that money had arrived in the form of a cheque from Coutts. William Waldegrave is someone who is involved with Coutts.

The IFBB’s Trustee David Ramsbotham became an honorary Fellow of Corpus Christie College, Cambridge in 2001 and serves on the Advisory Board of the International Centre for Prison Studies at King’s College, London. He is also a Patron of Prisoners Abroad and the Prison Education Trust. Ramsbotham is also Patron of the African Prisons Project and President of PTSD Resolution, providing veterans with treatment for PTSD.

I can’t find any mention of Dafydd on the website of PTSD Resolution, but I’d be surprised if he hasn’t been associated with them at some point. It was Dafydd after all who invented PTSD and who subsequently made a mint from it (see post ‘Feet In Chains’). This is not to suggest that I do not believe that soldiers suffer from severe psychological distress during or after combat, it rather suggests that I believe that they do, but that Dafydd just made it all up as he went along as he usually does and that no soldiers or indeed anyone else benefited from PTSD Dafydd-style.

Ramsbotham is also an ambassador for the charity SkillForce.

David Ramsbotham has written extensively on matters relating to prisons and the military. His 2003 book ‘Prisongate: The Shocking State of Britain’s Prisons and the Need for Visionary Change’ sets out his ‘vision for reform’ of the prison system.

The discourse surrounding prisons and prison reform is remarkably similar to that which surrounds the mental health system. After a few years of involvement at a senior level, the post holder tells the world that the system is dangerous, degrading, damaging, not doing what it should and is in desperate need of ‘reform’. No reform ever happens. What does happen is that the person who has just pronounced then spends the next few years clocking up a whole load of appointments with other organisations in the field, all of whom agree that Something Must Be Done and who promise a new vision.

Meanwhile, another person succeeds the post which has just been vacated, someone else who, like the last incumbent, has the necessary CV involving some sort of career which has involved keeping quiet for decades about state wrongdoing that has been concealed at the highest levels . After seven or eight years, they too will stand down, announce that the system is terrible, write a book and then take a senior role in organisations which promise a new vision, a new line of researching the problem etc etc.

Ronnie Waterhouse went one better than this. After a lifetime of service to a paedophile gang as a corrupt barrister and then a corrupt judge, Ronnie Chaired the monumental cover-up which was the massively expensive public inquiry into the activities of that paedophile ring and subsequently became Patron of the charidee Voices From Care, representing kids in care. One of the Trustees then nicked the funds.

So I was delighted to read in the media this weekend that there is a mental health crisis in the UK, we’re all mentally ill on a scale never seen before…1 in 4… a Cinderella service…caring nurses exhausted…no community services…talking treatments needed…all a matter of funding and resources…

I think that we’ve been here before. I was first subjected to this discourse by a nurse called Ingrid when I sat in the North Wales Hospital, unlawfully imprisoned in Dec 1986. I told Ingrid that this was a thoroughly abusive, corrupt institution staffed by people who did not give a damn about the patients. Ingrid yelled at me that they cared and it was very offensive of me to state that they didn’t. She then walked off in tears. Ingrid wasn’t Dafydd, but she knew what he was doing and when after a very long time and a pitched battle on my part to finally get an investigation held into my complaint – which was Chaired by Dafydd’s mate Robert Bluglass who concealed Dafydd’s crimes anyway (see post ‘Enter Professor Bluglass CBE’) – Ingrid refused to give evidence at the hearing.

Now stop this nonsense, get a team out to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and excavate the whole site. Bring those bodies up, admit that they were concealed there in the 1970s and 80s, not the 1870s and 80s, identify them and face the world with what has gone on. Then never again consult the BMA, the GMC or the Royal Colleges on any health or social policy matter.

‘We didn’t know.’

Then how did those bodies find their way there? And why were their owners never reported missing? Denis Nilsen murdering young homeless men whom no-one even realised had vanished had nothing on the North Wales Hospital.

The first Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales to be appointed was Philip Barry, who only served between 1981-82. Dafydd’s empire was at full strength at this time, although there was all that dreadful publicity about Mary Wynch who had been unlawfully arrested and imprisoned by Dafydd only two years previously and was now taking the first steps on her path to legal action against Dafydd, Clwyd Health Authority and Risley Remand Centre. Other people were suffering as badly as Mary had. The Birmingham Six and many others were languishing in various prisons after having been framed and kids in care and mental health patients, many of whom had also been fitted up, were dying in Risley Remand Centre (see post ‘Include Me Out’).

Curiously enough, the internet seems to have been erased of virtually all details pertaining to Philip Barry, although he also held the role of Chief Inspector for Prisons for Scotland, 1980-86.

Sir James Patrick Ivan Hennessey succeeded Philip Barry and was Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, 1982 -87. Dafydd’s regime was still so much intact that in 1987 he and his colleagues embarked on a well planned co-ordinated attempt to frame me and have me imprisoned for ‘attempting to stab a doctor’ (see posts ‘Workers’ Play Time’ and ‘Security, Security’). The plan fell apart after Sergeant Morgan at Bangor Police Station and a senior nurse, Jeff Crowther, didn’t tell the required lies. Within two years Sgt Morgan had been found guilty of indecently assaulting a teenaged girl in custody and was sacked. Jeff seemed to know that Sgt Morgan was going to be found guilty before his trial had begun. Shortly before the Waterhouse Inquiry, Jeff’s wife died whilst ‘in the care of’ Ysbyty Gwynedd. A few weeks later Jeff had to go into hiding after an addict threatened to murder him. Jeff left north Wales not long after. Documents in my possession demonstrate that Risley Remand Centre and the Mental Health Act Commission were on board with the plan to frame and imprison me.

James Hennessey was educated at Bedford School and then King’s College, Durham (now part of Newcastle University). He joined the Royal Artillary and was later being seconded to the Indian Army, 1944-46. After WWII, Hennessy joined what was then HM Overseas Service, serving initially in South Africa from 1948 in a number of roles. He was seconded in 1961 to the Office of the High Commissioner in Pretoria and took on a number of positions in the Gov’t of South Africa. Hennessey retired from the Overseas Service in 1968 and was appointed to the Foreign Office, serving as Charge d’Affaires to Montevideo, Uruguay, 1971–72 and then High Commissioner to Kampala, Uganda and non-resident Ambassador to Kigali, Rwanda, 1973–76. Hennessey served as Consul-General in Cape Town, 1977-80, before ending his career as the last Governor and Commander-in-Chief of British Honduras (now Belize), 1980–81.

Hennessy’s wiki entry tells us that he was appointed Chief Inspector of Prisons, taking over from Bill Pearce, ‘previously the Chief Inspector of Probation for Inner London whose tenure as HMCIP was cut short by illness’. Bill Pearce is someone else who has been airbrushed out of history, but him being the Chief Inspector of Probation for Inner London at a time when the Probation Service across the UK was colluding with serious crime including the organised abuse of children and vulnerable adults suggests that the Prisons Inspectorate made an interesting choice when they appointed him. The Home Secretary at the time was Willie Whitelaw who was a faithful servant of Dafydd and the paedophiles for decades (see previous posts).

James Hennessey served a five-year term until 1987. After stepping down, Hennessy served on the Parole Board for England and Wales until 1991, joining the paedophiles’ friends sitting on the Parole Board, including the Top Docs who colluded with Dafydd, ie. Colin Berry, David Mawson and others.

Hennesey was a Trustee of the Butler Trust until 1998.The Butler Trust was named after Mr Conservative Party Rab Butler, who influenced criminal justice policy for decades after he retired from politics (see post ‘Rab Butler, High Table And The Founding Fathers’). The Butler Trust was set up in 1985 by Veronica Linklater, former prison governor Rev Peter Timms and David Astor, former editor of ‘The Observer’, to recognise and celebrate outstanding practice by those working with offenders, through an annual award scheme.

Veronica Linklater, Baroness Linklater of Butterstone is a Lib Dem peer. Her interests are in children’s welfare, education and special needs, and prison reform. Linklater is the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Michael Lyle and the Hon. Elizabeth Sinclair, younger daughter of the former Leader of the Liberal Party, 1935-45, Archibald Sinclair, 1st Viscount Thurso.

Veronica’s grandfather Sinclair was a friend of Churchill and served as Churchill’s Personal Military Secretary, 1919-21, when Churchill was Secretary of State for War and then moved with Churchill to the Colonial Office as his Private Secretary. In 1922 Sinclair entered the Commons and supported David Lloyd George. In 1931 the Liberal Party joined the National Gov’t of Ramsay MacDonald and Sinclair was appointed Secretary of State for Scotland. When Churchill formed an all-party Coalition Government in 1940, Sinclair entered the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Air and worked with the RAF in planning the Battle of Britain. He remained a Minister until May 1945 when the Coalition ended. Sinclair lost his seat in the 1945 General Election.

Archibald Sinclair’s grandson, Veronica’s cousin, John Archibald Sinclair, 3rd Viscount Thurso, is also a Lib Dem politician, as well as a Scottish businessman. He occupied his grandfather’s seat in the Commons, 2001-15. John Thurso had entered the Lords when he inherited his father’s title in 1995, but lost his seat in 1999 when the automatic right of hereditary peers to sit in the Lords when abolished. After losing his seat in the Commons, Thurso was back in the Lords in April 2016, after winning a by-election to a vacancy in the Lords following the death of Liberal Party grandee Lord Avebury aka Eric Lubbock, a faithful paedophiles’ friend (see post ‘He Knows Where The Bodies Are Buried’). John Thurso’s father Robin, the 2nd Viscount Thurso was also a Liberal Party politician and sat on the Scottish Liberal Party Executive.

The male Thursos all went to Eton and they’ll all have known about the excesses of Jeremy Thorpe.

Veronica didn’t go to Eton, being female, but she knew about Jeremy Thorpe. As well as Cyril Smith and no doubt all the others. Veronica was educated at Cranborne Chase School in Wiltshire, followed by the Universities of Sussex and London. In 1967 Veronica married the journalist Magnus Linklater. Magnus Linklater pompouses at length in the media and is on record as saying that ‘the social sciences and humanities are automatically inferior explanatory models’ to the sciences. Magnus Linklater was the editor of ‘The Sunday Times’ when in 1983 it made itself a laughing stock by publishing the forged Hitler Diaries. Linklater later blamed it all on Murdoch, claiming that of course he, Magnus, saw straight through the forgeries but Murdoch forced him to publish. Which sounds rather like an inferior explanatory model to me Magnus.

Magnus manages the Scottish estates of Veronica’s family – like Veronica’s male relatives, Magnus went to Eton and he was also Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, 1996-01. Which neatly spanned the years of the Waterhouse Inquiry, it’s publication and the immediate aftermath when the outrage regarding the blatant cover-up was at its peak. I cannot think how being Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council could be linked to Waterhouse, but I bet it was because of a few of Veronica’s former jobs.

In 1967, Veronica became a Child Care Officer for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and between 1970–85, she became governor to three Islington Schools. Tower Hamlets sent a lot of kids in care into the arms of John Allen and the paedophile gang in north Wales (see post ‘Tower Hamlets, Paul Boateng And Tessa Jowell’). Many of them were then trafficked back to London and Brighton, where some of them made up the cohort of high profile young men who died of AIDS in the late 1980s (see posts ‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘The Bodies Buried Beneath Canary Wharf’). The Islington Child Abuse Scandal was in full swing while Veronica was governor of those schools and she will have known about it.

Veronica’s good works knew no bounds. From 1971-77, Veronica co-founded the Visitors’ Centre at Pentonville Prison and her continuing interest in this field led to her involvement with the Prison Reform Trust, 1981-82.

Baroness Jean Trumpington served as a visitor at Pentonville Prison. Trumpers was the junior Health Minister who appointed Jimmy Savile to the task force which managed Broadmoor. Trumpers was also mates with Rab Butler, after his political career, in his capacity as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. See post ’95 Glorious Years’.

Veronica is a Trustee of the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Veronica bagged her peerage in Nov 1997. After Ronnie Waterhouse had spent a few months telling the former residents of the children’s homes in north Wales that they were a bunch of lying gits who were only after compensation.

The Rev Peter Timms, who established the Butler Trust with Veronica, is a Methodist Minister and the former Governor of Maidstone Prison and Young Offenders Institute Glen Parva. When he was Governor of Maidstone Prison, Peter Timms opened the first prison wing related to the treatment of sex offenders. Peter Timms would have known George Thomas, the former Speaker of the House, who was probably the most well-known Methodist in the UK for decades and who preached across the country. George Thomas was also a paedophile who serially assaulted underaged boys. See post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’.

Glen Parva is located in Leicestershire, the site of a long standing paedophile ring, which was concealed by politicians, Leicester University, Leicester City Council, the Leicestershire Police, local lawyers and courts, the areas schools and of course the NHS and social services (see previous posts). The Leicester gang had links to Dafydd et al in north Wales and concealed their crimes (see post ‘An Expert From England’)

In 1997, the Chief Inspector of Prisons walked out of an inspection at Glen Parva because conditions were so bad. After a subsequent inspection a year later, the report stated that there was ‘hope for the future’ for the prison but added that a lot of work still needed to be done and recommended that some staff should be moved because of their attitude towards inmates. In July 2002, four inmates from Glen Parva escaped whilst on a camping trip in the Peak District. In its annual report in 2003, the Board of Visitors revealed two serious cases of unrest at Glen Parva. On one occasion, 16 inmates barricaded themselves inside a building. The report blamed an unprecedented rise in the number of inmates at the prison and also the fact that some inmates were bored and unsettled, finding themselves hundreds of miles from home.

In Nov 2004, the Prison Reform Trust condemned Glen Parva for the high amount of time inmates spent in their cells and for the lack of time spent in ‘useful activity’ at the prison. Statistics for 2003-2004 showed that on average inmates spent just 17.3 hours a week in useful activity, and an average of just another seven hours a week out of their cells.

In Feb 2010 the Prisons Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) described conditions at Glen Parva as ‘deplorable’. Their report said ‘water from the prison’s poorly-maintained toilet plumbing system leaked out of the pipes and seeped through the walls,’ causing ‘a horrible smell that fills the corridors and cells on regular occasions’ and that the prison ‘operates within the confines of a sprawling campus of largely shabby buildings which continue to degrade over time, despite the best efforts of the management and staff.’ The Board also warned that the policy of transferring prisoners into Glen Parva from other regions ‘has recently introduced an increasing level of gang rivalry, thereby adding yet another dimension to an already toxic melting pot’.

In Aug 2016, ambulance personnel called to the prison criticised staff for their lack of urgency when faced with a life threatening medical emergency. The Healthcare Centre at Glen Parva has 14 inpatient beds with 24-hour nursing cover. Many health services at the prison are provided by Leicestershire Primary Care Trust. Whose staff have concealed organised abuse and a dangerous mental health service for years.

Towards the end of 2016 it was announced that HMP Glen Parva would close and be replaced with a newly built category C adult prison. It will be completely demolished and redeveloped with a new built prison on the site.

The Rev Peter Timms is or was Chair of the Loudon Trust. The other members of the Loudon Trust are virtually entirely Top Docs working in secure mental health units specialising in ‘treatment’ for sex offenders. Every one of the institutions in which this lot are employed has colluded with organised abuse and the associated crime.

Veronica’s and Peter Timms’s mate David Astor built up a reputation as an impeccably liberal editor with integrity and a concern for radical causes. David Astor forgot any such concerns when he was called upon to help handle the family crisis which was the fall out from the Profumo Affair (see post ‘In Memoriam – Bronwen, Lady Astor’).

The Chief Inspector of Prisons 1987-95 was judge Sir Stephen Tumim. Tumim was appointed by Dafydd’s mate Douglas Hurd and although Tumim made many outraged noises about the disgusting conditions in England and Wales’s prisons, not a great deal changed. The Risley Remand Centre riots happened on Tumim’s watch and although Tumim was not shy in describing the conditions in Risley as terrible and Michael Mansfield represented some of the rioters, no-one mentioned that the ‘hospital wing’ was full of people from children’s homes in north Wales and mental health patients, who had not been found guilty of any offence (see posts ‘Workers’Play Time’ and ‘Include Me Out’). Risley went off like a bomb in 1989, which was shortly after people in Somerset who knew what was happening to me in north Wales began to find themselves rubbing shoulders with the renegade relatives of leading Tories and their friends and in receipt of a great deal of money themselves (see post ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’).

Tumim was the son of a barrister and was educated at St Edward’s School, Oxford and Worcester College, Oxford. In 1978 Tumim became a County Court Circuit Judge. Tumim’s contract was not renewed by Home Secretary Michael Howard in 1995 and David Ramsbotham was appointed.

Tumim was knighted soon afterwards, just before the Waterhouse Inquiry. He served on many charitable trusts and was close to numerous paedophiles’ friends who involved themselves in supposedly worthy causes, including some of those directly associated with the cover-up which was Waterhouse (see post ‘The Waterhouse  Tribunal – Who Was Involved And What Happened To Them Subsequently?’).

Tumim was the founding President of UNLOCK, the National Association of Ex-Offenders. Between 1996-98 he was Principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, leaving amidst some controversy (he was popular with students, less so with academic colleagues). He was High Steward for Wallingford, 1995-01. Tumim was on the committee and a buyer for the Contemporary Art Society. He was President of the Royal Literary Fund, 1990-03.

  • Dame Anne Elizabeth Owers succeeded David Ramsbotham as Chief Inspector of Prisons and was in post, 2001-10. Blair’s Gov’t was so pleased with Anne Owers that her appointment was renewed in June 2006 and again in March 2008. Anne Owers had also pursued a career which involved keeping quiet about state abuses, which will have been why Home Secretary David Blunkett appointed her. When Home Secretary, Blunkett gave a Citizen’s Award to a woman who lived in a village near Caernarfon who intimidated neighbours with mental health problems, who spoke out in the local press about the problem of mentally ill black criminals and who was related to someone who raped a girl under 7 yrs old, but the rest of the village were intimidated into keeping quiet about that.
  • Owers was educated at  Washington Grammar School, Co Durham and studied history at Girton College, Cambridge. On graduating Owers went to Zambia to teach. Owers took time out to raise a family and also undertook ‘research and voluntary advice and race relations work’. She joined the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants in 1981 as a research and development officer and was appointed its General Secretary in 1985. In June 2008, Owers was appointed Chairman of Christian Aid, succeeding John Gladwin. In 2010 Owers was appointed Chairman of Clinks, a charidee supporting the work of the voluntary and community sector working with offenders and their families and also Chaired a review of prisons in N Ireland, 2010-11. In March 2012 Owers was appointed Chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Prior to this, she was Director of JUSTICE.
  • Owers was appointed as the first National Chair of the Independent Monitoring Boards by in Oct 2017 by Justice Secretary David Lidington. Lidington’s name, in his capacity as a junior official in the Home Office, appeared on Home Office documentation in relation to Lord Peter Taylor’s 1989 interim Report into Hillsborough, a Report which it seems was drafted before the Home Office stated that it was completed and which was not actually signed by Lord Taylor. Douglas Hurd was Home Secretary at the time. When porkies were being told by the Home Office about Peter Taylor’s Report, the Home Office were colluding with the crimes of Dafydd and the paedophile gang (see post ‘Additional Security Measures’).

Owers was also a non-executive Director of the Criminal Cases Review Commission and a member of the advisory group to the Lammy Review of race and criminal justice. Like James Hennessy, Owers  is a Trustee of the Butler Trust.

In 2012 Anne Owers won the Perrie Award. The Perrie Award has been presented annually since 1995 by the Perrie Lectures Committee to the person who has done most to promote an understanding of the work of the Prison Service in England and Wales and pushed forward the development of penal policy. The award and the associated lectures aim to improve the care of offenders and advance penal policy. The organising committee is made up of members from within the penal service (National Offender Management Service, NOMS) and from academia, charities and other fields.

Six years after Dame Anne won the Perrie Award, there has been a stream of scandals emanating from prisons in England and Wales. Prisoners are either out of their heads on spice or are injuring and killing themselves and in recent months it has been admitted that there is a substantial problem with the standard of ‘training’ of prison officers. Conditions at Liverpool Prison were damned as being the worst that the prison has experienced for decades only a few weeks ago and builders contracted by Liverpool Prison were dismissed after they raised Health and Safety concerns. The perennial problem of the prisons being full of people with mental health problems or addictions rather than villains continues.

The outcomes of the NOMS itself remain depressingly poor.

The Perrie award was named in honour of Bill Perrie (1918-1997), regarded as one of the leading prison governors of his time. Because conditions in prisons were just so great when Bill was busy being a leading governor weren’t they. Previous lucky winners of the Perrie Award include Stephen Tumim and David Ramsbotham. Why does that not surprise me? Other winners include Tony Pearson (former Deputy Director, Prison Service); John Staples (former prison governor); Lord Chief Justice Woolf; Colin Allen (Deputy Chief Inspector of Prisons, 1995-02); Sir Martin Narey, former DG of Prison Service for England and Wales and a good friend of the paedophiles (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part V’); Alison Liebling of Cambridge University, who is one member of the network of criminologists who have kept silent about some real horrors discussed in my post ‘Rab Butler, High Table And The Founding Fathers’.

As Young Mr Grace used to say on ‘Are You Being Served’ ‘You’re all doing very well!’

Former Christian Aid Chairman John Gladwin was Bishop of Guildford, 1994-04, then of Chelmsford from 2004 until he retired in 2009, whereupon he became Chairman of CAB. John Gladwin would have known about the sex abuse scandals in the Church which have now become very public.

Lucille Hughes has been involved with the senior management of the CAB in Wales for quite some time and has attracted more paedophiles’ friends into the organisation. Ronnie Waterhouse was involved with the establishment of the CAB in the Royal Courts of Justice at The Strand, a CAB which was entirely controlled by a number of people who also doubled up as paedophiles’ friends. When the gang in north Wales took me to the Royal Courts of Justice in 1991 in an attempt to have me imprisoned, I didn’t notice the CAB of which Ronnie boasted and no-one alerted me to its presence either.

Someone who has been involved with Christian Aid in Wales for many years – I think that she was Director of Christian Aid in Wales at one point – was Branwen Niclas. Branwen caused quite a stir when I lived near Bethesda as a result of her Welsh language activism; she had a long involvement with the Welsh Language Society. She very effectively trashed some sort of Gov’t office at Colwyn Bay – I can’t remember which one exactly – for which she was imprisoned. I think that Branwen was at one point the girlfriend of Hywel Williams, the former psychiatric social worker who is now the Plaid MP for Arfon.

Branwen’s family home ie. that of her parents, was near Tal-y-bont, down the bottom of the hill from the village where I lived. I was friendly with some people who knew her father, mathematician and teacher James Nicholas. James Nicholas died in 2013 and Meic Stephens wrote his obituary for the Indie.

James Nicholas, served as Archdruid for the Gorsedd of the Bards, 1981-84 and had won the Chair at the National Eisteddfod of 1969. He ‘lent his support to the law-breaking campaigns of the Welsh Language Society and, further afield, the horrors of apartheid and the plight of the Third World were always prominent on his agenda’.

James Nicholas was influenced by the pacifist poet Waldo Williams (1904-71), with whom he had a close personal friendship. He wrote about Waldo’s mysticism and attraction in later life to Quakerism, delivered a moving funeral address, edited a volume of memorial essays and gave lectures on Williams.

James Nicholas was born in St David’s in Pembrokeshire in 1928. Because as a school boy he spent two years in a sanatorium, he was 20 before he left St David’s Grammar School for the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he took a degree in mathematics. His first teaching post was at Bala.

Nicholas then moved to Dyfed, being appointed Head of Mathematics at Pembroke in 1959 and Headmaster of Ysgol y Preseli at Crymych in 1963.

As well as Branwen, the Nicholas’s had another daughter, Saran, who is a Top Doctor, a haematologist with Hywel Dda University Health Board.

James Nicholas was a staunch member of the Welsh Baptist Union, which he served as President. During his time as Headmaster at Crymych he was awarded a fellowship in the Philosophy Department at the University College, Swansea. From 1975 until his retirement in 1988, Nicholas was a member of HM Inspectorate of Schools and based in Gwynedd.

Meic Stephens tells us that Nicholas ‘proved a pillar of common sense and the utmost integrity while acting as Recorder’ at the National Eisteddfod.

James Nicholas knew about Dafydd and the paedophiles, of that there is no doubt. He lived his entire life surrounded by them. I do not interpret that as meaning that James was of them or even liked what they were doing, he could well have been horrified yet helpless, but he knew what was happening.
There were trafficking gangs in west Wales and in north Wales, which were linked. Swansea University hosted Dafydd’s mate Saunders Lewis and the succeeding generation who ran that institution were the family of Rhodri Morgan (see posts ‘A Bit More Paleontology’ and ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’). Numerous paedophiles’ friends were enthusiastic about the National Eisteddfod, as was Dafydd. Dafydd addressed the Welsh Baptists Union in 1971 (see post ‘A Serious Moral Collapse’). Owain Gethin Evans was the Assistant Director of Gwynedd Social Services in the 1980s when the gang were busy in the children’s homes in Gwynedd and was a leading light in the Quakers in Gwynedd. Gethin was Lucille Hughes’s henchman and was involved in smearing and excluding Alison Taylor after she blew the whistle on the abuse of children. Dr Paul Nickson, a GP in Bethesda, was another Quaker who colluded with the abuse of children and mental health patients (see post ‘Pets Win Prizes’).
When James Nicholas was employed as a Schools Inspector in Gwynedd, numerous staff in Gwynedd schools and in Gwynedd County Council’s Education Authority were colluding with the abuse of children (see posts ‘Today We Have Naming Of Parts’ and ‘Dulce et Decorum est’).
Branwen will have known something about Dafydd and the gang as well. The Welsh Language Society contained mates of Dafydd – although by no means all members of the Welsh Language Society had time for him – and Meri Huws occupied a leading role in the Welsh Language Society when Branwen was actively campaigning with them. Meri Huws worked as a community social worker with Gwynedd Social Services on the Maesgeirchan estate in Bangor when the kids from Ty’r Felin children’s homes on that estate were being trafficked for sex locally and to Dolphin Square. Branwen may well be one of those who detested Meri – a great many people involved in language activism don’t have a good word to say for Meri and I have never seen any accounts of Branwen and her fellow activist Angharad Tomos being involved in anything with the dreadful Meri – but Branwen will have known what Meri’s time as a social worker involved.
I note that Branwen’s twitter account describes her as a mother of four who lives in Menai Bridge. Branwen’s tweets contain references to all sorts of activism past and present and there are the obligatory tweets pledging undying support for the NHS. Therein lies the clue. Branwen, her Top Doc sister, her dad and everyone else in their network will know that the Top Doctors were integral to the operation of that trafficking gang and are now integral to ensuring that everyone keeps quiet about them. Squealers find themselves denied all NHS care, no matter how many denials of this are made. It happens and everyone knows it. Branwen has four children, I can completely understand why she is not going to risk it.
Well dim problem Branwen, they killed one of my closest friends years ago and they’ve denied me treatment for every one of the three serious conditions that I’ve had. I was left to die and this was made quite clear. A letter from an NHS manager admitting that I was being denied treatment was destroyed by a GP because of the legal bomb which it constituted (see post ‘Rab Butler, High Table And The Founding Fathers’). So I’m happy to write this blog, name everybody involved and detail their crimes and furthermore I’m providing this service free of charge.
Branwen’s father lived just down the road from the corrupt judge Huw Daniel, who spent a lifetime assisting the paedophiles’ friends. Huw’s dad J.E. Daniel was a tutor at the Bala Theological College. J.E. Daniel was an Inspector of Schools in the generation before James Nicholas. J.E. Daniel was also a friend of Saunders Lewis who was a mate of Dafydd’s! Up the hill from Branwen’s dad’s house was the village of Llanllechid, where Ioan Bowen Rees, the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council lived (see post ‘I Know Nuzzing…’).
James Nicholas, Ioan Bowen Rees and Huw Daniel all occupied a Plas. The rest of us slummed it in the quarrymen’s cottages.

Nick Hardwick was Chief Inspector of Prisons, 2010-16. Nick is someone who built his whole career on his knowledge of the crimes of the paedophiles’ friends (see post ‘Yet More Inglorious Bastards’) and was succeeded by Peter Clarke.

When Peter Clarke was appointed, Mark Leech, editor of ‘The Prisons Handbook’, published a highly insulting ‘open letter’ to Peter Clarke, giving Peter Clarke a bollocking for not being Nick Hardwick. Mark Leech seemed very cross that Clarke was not an insider with a track record of keeping quiet about Gov’t failure and wrongdoing, but instead has had a career as a police office. Mr Leech reminded Mr Clarke of the great work of those giants Stephen Tumim and David Ramsbotham…

Peter Clarke was personally invited to apply for the position of Chief Inspector of Prisons by Michael Gove when Gove was Justice Secretary. Gove did insane things when he was Education Secretary, but he was suddenly overcome by a great deal of sense when he became Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor. He identified which parties were responsible for the nation’s lethal, sclerotic, corrupt Prison Service and Gove did try to effect change. So that must have been why he was removed by Theresa after only one year in the post and was replaced by the drip Liz Truss and then by the former minion in Hurd’s rotten to the core Home Office, David Lidington.

I mentioned the Prison Reform Trust (PRT) earlier in this post. The PRT is yet another organisation which has made zero impact since its foundation in 1981 by a ‘small group of prison reform campaigners who were unhappy with the direction in which the Howard League for Penal Reform was heading, concentrating more on community punishments than on traditional prison reform issues’. PRT offers advice and information to prisoners, their families, prison and probation staff, the legal profession, students, academics and interested members of the public. PRT organise an annual lecture, which in 2005 was delivered by Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary. That’ll be the Charles Clarke who was responsible for the Windbag’s office throughout those years when the Windbag desperately wanted to become PM and his only strategy for this was to conceal the mountain of crap in north Wales and beg the staff of the NHS to vote Labour (see post ‘I Warn You…’). The Windbag knew Dafydd’s colleague Tony Francis when they were students in Cardiff. I wonder if Charles Clarke ever bumped into Tony Francis, Dafydd and co were busy making friends all over the place after Brown and I began to uncover the enormity of their crimes.

Neil Kinnock Ed Miliband Gives Keynote Speech at Party Conference

The Prison Reform Trust carries out research on all aspects of prison. Recent studies include: prisoners’ views on prison education, the mental health needs of women prisoners, older prisoners, prisoner councils, foreign national prisoners, prisoner votes and a report into how sentences make the decision to imprison offenders.

Founding members included Sir Monty Finniston and dear old Veronica Linklater, who is obviously determined to help those who have gone off the rails.

Monty Finniston was metallurgist who was a graduate of and then a lecturer at the Glasgow University. He spent WWII in the Royal Naval Scientific Service, seconded to the Chalk River Laboratories in Canada, working on the application of nuclear power to submarines.  After the war Finniston was appointed Chief Metallurgist at the Atomic Energy Authority, Harwell, 1948-58.

Finniston initiated and oversaw a wide-ranging research programme into the many metallurgical problems associated with nuclear reactor design. In 1958 Finniston moved to north-east England to become Director of the Nuclear Research Centre newly founded by the Newcastle engineering firm C.A. Parsons. He was Vice-President of the Royal Society, 1971-2 and became Chairman of British Steel Corporation in 1973.

In response to complaints from industry about a shortage of qualified engineers, in 1977 Callaghan’s Gov’t invited Finniston to set up a Committee of Enquiry into British Engineering. In 1979 the Finniston Report was published, which addressed the concerns that engineering was of relatively low status in the UK.

Sir Monty Finniston was Chancellor of Stirling University, 1979-88. He was President of the Association for Project Management, 1984-91.

There is nothing in Finniston’s biography that indicates why he would be interested in Chairing an organisation dedicated to prison reform. However, as someone who worked in the nuclear industry at Harwell during the 1950s, Finniston would know about Macmillan’s cover-up which followed the Windscale accident, which occurred just after Dafydd had left his job at Windscale to study medicine at Liverpool University. Like Dafydd, Finniston will have known about the corrupt practices of Ernest Marples, one of the Ministers involved and his use of prostitutes. See post ‘Those Who Are Ready To Serve’ for details.

It was in 1980 that Mary Wynch finally escaped the clutches of Dafydd and the gang after being unlawfully arrested, imprisoned and then banged up in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for a year. Like Alison Taylor and I, Mary was not easily intimidated and in 1980 Dafydd et al will have realised that there was trouble coming their way. So I wonder if someone somewhere thought that a new organisation concerning itself with locking people up, rather than as the Howard League were more interested in, community sentences, might be required in the wake of Mary’s dissent? Whatever would have happened if Mary’s case was used by campaigners to highlight the abuses of the Prison Service?  Monty Finniston might have been willing to help.

Monty was an accommodating man after all. He was a leading light in the nuclear industry which was beset by problems with the potential to cause maximum embarrassment to Gov’ts and he helped out old Callaghan by setting up the Committee of Inquiry as requested. Monty also did Gov’t a few favours when he was Chancellor of Stirling University. Stirling students were fairly politically active and there was a huge row as well as student protests when the journalist Alastair Hetherington was appointed to a Research Chair in 1982 (see post ‘Life In Cold Blood’). Hetherington had no academic background, but he was the sort of appointment that Thatch’s Gov’t were trying to encourage universities to make, that of people with links to Gov’t and industry who excelled at toadying to Important People.

Monty was Chancellor when Jack McConnell, who later became FM of Scotland, was a student at Stirling and then led the Students’ Union there.

Stephen Shaw was Director of PRT from 1981-99 and then became the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman for England and Wales, 1999-10. In 2001 Shaw’s remit was extended to taking complaints about National Probation Service and in 2006 was extended again to taking complaints regarding those detained in immigration centres. A whole series of disasters and scandals occurred when Stephen Shaw was Director of the PRT and nothing improved in any of the areas for which he had responsibility.

Sir Monty Finniston was succeeded as Chair of the PRT by the former Cabinet Minister, Edmund Dell, the MP for Birkenhead, 1964-79. Dell began life in the Commons as a Labour MP but in 1981 he joined Dr Death in the SDP. In 1988, Dell became a Lib Dem.

Birkenhead was part of the Liverpool branch of Dafydd’s empire (see post ‘These Sharks Are Crap As Well’). The lefties of Liverpool were fully complicit with Dafydd’s crimes, but then so were Dr Death and his Top Doctor mates. Dr Death’s former colleagues at St Thomas’s were mates of Dafydd’s, they weren’t simply keeping quiet because it was politically expedient to do so like Eric Heffer and co.

Edmund Dell was born in London and served in the Royal Artillary in WWII. He was educated at Dame Alice Owen’s School and Queen’s College, Oxford, where he was a member of the Communist Party, as his future ministerial colleague Denis Healey had been before the war.

Dell began work for ICI in Manchester as an overseas sales manager, specialising in Latin American trade and eventually rose to Vice President of the Plastics Division. In 1953 he was elected to Manchester City Council and served for seven years. Dafydd’s mate Professor Kenneth Rawnsley and his network dominated the psychiatric services in Manchester in the late 1950s/first half of the 60s, before Rawnsley relocated to Cardiff and continued to collude with the wrongdoing of the north Wales gang from there (see post ‘The Discovery Of A Whole New Galaxy’).

Dell stood unsuccessfully for Parliament in 1955. He was dissuaded from standing for Parliament in 1959 by ICI on the grounds that it would make promotion to the highest ranks of the company difficult. However, he eventually gave in to the temptation of Parliament and was elected for Birkenhead in 1964. He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Jack Diamond, then Parliamentary Secretary for Technology under Tony Benn in 1966 and as a junior Minister under Peter Shore in 1967.

Tony Benn knew about the Westminster Paedophile Ring and the role that Dafydd et al in north Wales were playing in it. I wrote to Tony Benn some years before he died about the abuse of mental health patients in north Wales and he simply wrote back saying ‘sorry mental health is not my areas’. I wrote to him because I had been told that he was interested in disability issues. Tony Benn was rather more interested in Top Doctors. He had very good links with St Thomas’s Hospital and both he and his wife were treated there.

‘Please don’t kill me Top Docs, just take revenge on the service users. I’m useful to you! I can campaign to prevent your failing dangerous units being closed down, I can vote for you to have an even bigger salary and never face charges of corporate manslaughter, you know us in Parliament, we’re so craven that we just do exactly as you order us to…’

I really am mystified as to how politicians on the left such as Tony Benn get away with their deep and meaningful friendships with them all at Tommy’s. Tommy’s has a well-established reputation as being the most elite of the London hospitals, it’s the place where one finds medical students who are actually titled members of the aristocracy but who just fancy dabbling in medicine for a bit. Furthermore it tends to be the Tommy’s consultants who are raking it in at Harley Street.

Peter Shore was someone else who knew about Dafydd et al. Shore was an East End Labour MP and children from his constituency were being packed off to children’s homes in north Wales. They then returned to Shore’s area as teenaged sex workers who were infected with HIV. There were so many of them dying that in the late 1980s, that Shore helped convert the old Mildmay Mission Hospital into a specialist unit for terminally ill AIDS patients (see post ‘Apocalypse Now’).

In 1968 Edmund Dell was promoted to Minister of State for Trade and then moved to Employment. When Harold Wilson returned to No 10 in 1974, Dell became Paymaster General and then Secretary of State for Trade and President of the Board of Trade, 1976-78 under Callaghan.

So Dell would have been a colleague of George Thomas the child molester and Leo Abse, Thomas’s mate who constantly got Thomas out of trouble, often breaking the law to do so (see post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’). Abse himself was investigated for historical child sex offences. Dell would also have known Greville Janner, Jeremy Thorpe, Cyril Smith and the rest of them…

Dell served as a trustee of both the SDP and the Lib Dems and served as one of the SDP’s three representatives during emergency negotiations with the Liberals in Jan 1988 when it appeared the two parties’ merger might fall through after the failed launch by David Steel and Bob Maclennan of the joint manifesto, ‘Voices and Choices’. So Dell was obviously a trusted pair of safe hands.

After Parliament, Dell had a career in business as Chairman of Guinness Peat, founding Chairman of Channel 4 and as a Director of Shell Trading. In 1991-2 he was President of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Channel 4 was packed with paedophiles’ friends pretending to be daring, but none of whom dared whisper anything about organised abuse, yet alone by politicians (see post ‘What’s Left? The Politics Of Social Justice’).

The Chair of the PRT who succeeded Edmund Dell was broadcaster and journalist Jon Snow. Douglas Hurd succeeded Jon Snow as PRT’s fourth Chair in Nov 1997. So Douglas of the corrupt Home Office and Douglas of the Kincora Boys’ Home cover-up when Douglas was N Ireland Secretary was installed as Chair of the PRT just as Ronnie Waterhouse finished taking evidence from the victims of Dafydd and the gang, who were told by Waterhouse and most of the world’s media that they were criminals who could not be believed. Of course they were criminals, the first thing that Dafydd and the gang did in response to any complaints about them was to fit the complainant up for a criminal offence and then tell everyone that they couldn’t be believed because they were criminals. Thank goodness Douglas was in post at the PRT to keep an eye on things.

Douglas was succeeded as Chair in Sept 2001 by Lord Robert Fellowes. Fellowes went to Eton as all the best penal reformers do and then worked as a banker for many years. In 1977 Fellowes was recruited to join the Royal Household as Assistant Private Secretary. He spent the next 20 years in the Lilibet’s Private Secretary’s Office, becoming Deputy Private Secretary to Lilibet in 1986 and Private Secretary in 1990, where he remained until 1999. Robert Fellowes would have been well-acquainted with Dame Mary Morrison, Lady Susan Hussey and Carlo then. As well as Backstairs Billy.

Robert Fellowes was the brother-in-law of Diana, Princess of Wales and is the first cousin of Ronald Ferguson, father of Sarah, Duchess of York. Major Ron entertained the nation when media reports appeared in 1988 featuring Major Ron’s visits to the Wigmore Club. The Wigmore Club was a health club and massage parlour in London staffed by girls who, dressed in starched white ‘medical’ gowns, allegedly offered à la carte sexual services to members.

Dafydd: Could you have got me a job there by any chance? That could have been a high risk strategy, unlike those whom you usually trafficked, I am someone who would have known who Major Ron was.

I heard something even better than that about Major Ron years after the Wigmore Club revelations. I used to work with someone who had spent their youth in the posh bits of London hanging out with posh people but not the sort of posh people who toadied to the Royal Family. This person used to watch the polo matches and was part of the crowd of young people who’s role it was to go onto the field and stamp the turf back down half-way through the match. I was told that Major Ron’s predilection for underaged girls was so well-known that my friend and her mates all sported home made badges saying ‘Major Ron’s Kiddie Sex Club’ to one of the polo matches just to see if anyone challenged them. Not one person dared mention it. Major Ron’s first wife Susan died in a car crash in Argentina in Sept 1998. After the horrific details of the lives of the kids in care in north Wales had been heard at the Waterhouse Inquiry, but before Ronnie published his Report reassuring the world that a paedophile ring had existed in north Wales, but it only involved a few Welsh sheep-shaggers who at most worked as teachers or social workers.

Major Ron was polo manager, initially to Phil the Greek and later, for many years, to Carlo. Major Ron had to resign as Carlo’s polo manager, as well as from his position with the Guards Polo Club after the business at the Wigmore Club. Which seems ridiculous considering that Peter Morrison’s associates were killing witnesses in north Wales.

In 1999 Robert Fellowes left his job at Sodom and Gomorrah in The Mall, bagged a peerage and returned to banking. He became Vice-Chairman, and then Chairman, of Barclays Private Banking. Fellowes is also a Company Director and a Trustee of the Rhodes Trust, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth Institute. Fellowes was Chairman of The Voices Foundation, 2004-12.

Who better to Chair the Prison Reform Trust? Here’s the great radical himself:

Lord-Robert-Fellowes2.jpg

Robert Fellowes is a distant relation of Julian Fellowes, but I don’t expect Robert Fellowes admits that to anyone, although Julian Fellowes will tell as many people as possible.

The inquest on Diana Princess of Wales and Dodi was carried out by Thomas Scott Baker. Thomas Scott Baker was a curious choice of coroner because Diana and Dodi’s inquests were the first that he’d ever performed. In 1995, Thomas Scott Baker was the judge who jailed Susan Brooke, a woman from north Wales, for abducting a baby from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd after receiving an ‘assessment’ on her from Dafydd et al after she’d been detained in Bryn Golau Ward in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. There are so many features of Susan Brooke’s case that are so worrying that I have previously blogged quite extensively about it, ‘So Who’s Path Had Susan Brooke Crossed?’, ‘More On The Susan Brooke Case’ and ‘Update On Cases Of Susan Brooke and Sara Thornton’.

A mate of Dafydd’s with no previous experience performing inquests on Royals who’ve died amidst allegations of foul play might be all in a day’s work for Lord Fellowes, but I find it rather worrying.

The Prison Reform Trust’s nemesis, the Howard League for Penal Reform, was founded 1886 and focuses on penal reform in England and Wales. It receives funding from the Legal Services Commission and holds Legal Aid contracts in order to represent and assist young people in custody. There does not seem to be quite so many flaky people involved with the Howard League for Penal Reform as there are with the PRT, but there are a few who are worth a mention.

The Chief Executive is Frances Crook, who joined as Director in 1986. Frances Crook graduated in history from Liverpool University, subsequently qualified as a teacher and worked in secondary schools in Liverpool and London until 1980. She won’t have been able to avoid knowing about some kids being neglected or abused then.

Crook was the campaigns co-coordinator at the British Section of Amnesty International, 1980-85, and served as a Labour Councillor for East Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet, 1982-90.

Crook has been a school governor and Chaired various local community organisations. She was a Governor of the University of Greenwich for 6 years and Chaired the Staff and General Committee, retiring in 2002. Crook served on the Board of the School Food Trust, 2005-08, the non-departmental public body charged with overseeing the implementation of national standards for school food to every school in England and Wales.

In 2009 Crook was appointed an NHS non-executive Director of Barnet Primary Care Trust and in 2010 she was appointed a Senior Visiting Fellow at the LSE.

Lord Alex Carlile QC, was appointed President of the Howard League for Penal Reform in 2006.

Alex Carlile is a barrister who grew up in Ruabon near Wrexham and in Lancashire. At one point he practised from Chambers in Chester when Chester was a hub of corruption among lawyers. Carlile was the Liberal MP who later held paedophiles’ friend Emlyn Hooson’s old seat, Montgomeryshire, 1983-97. Hooson was a big friend of Ronnie Waterhouse. In 1995 Alex Carlile was the last person to dare ask questions in Parliament regarding Mary Wynch’s case. Carlile was given a brief written answer informing him that Mary had been finally shafted by the Home Office the year previously, that no-one was admitting to anything and if Carlile knew what was good for him he’d say no more about it. He didn’t and he picked up his peerage in 1999 (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’). Carlile’s domestic life hit the press in Jan 2007 after he left his wife and began a relationship with a much younger barrister, Alison Levitt, leaving his wife distraught. Alison Levitt is Head of Business Crime at the London law firm Mishcon de Reya. Perhaps Dafydd and Robert Bluglass will be seeking her services soon.

Carlile was Chair of the 2006 Inquiry into physical restraint, solitary confinement and forcible strip searching of children in prisons, secure training centres and local council secure children’s homes. On 11 May and 6 June 2011, Lord Carlile held a follow-on Public Inquiry in the House of Lords. He put together an expert panel to advise and to give evidence to the Inquiry. This expert panel who gave both written and oral evidence consisted of Nick Hardwick (Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons), Paul Cook (G4S children’s services), Eric Baskind (British Self Defence Governing Body, Liverpool John Moores University), Malcolm Stevens (JusticeCare Solutions), Laura Janes (Howard League for Penal Reform), John Drew (Youth Justice Board for England and Wales), Sue Berelowitz (Office of the Children’s Commissioner) and Carolyne Willow (CRAE).

With the experts that Alex drew together, is it surprising that nothing has changed?

Alex was highly effective at one thing however. He defended Paul Burrell, Diana’s butler, against charges that Burrell had nicked a load of Diana’s frocks, as well as a few other goodies. Things looked bad for Burrell, until someone somewhere found good cause to put Lilibet in the witness box if the trial went ahead, whereby Lilibet immediately realised that she had forgotten that Burrell had been given all the goodies, no question about it. If only Alex could have got such a result for Mary Wynch!

The legal firm whom Diana used to represent her in her divorce was Mishcon de Reya, who employ Alex’s wife Alison Levitt.

Alex was educated at Epsom College and King’s College London. He was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1970 and Alex is now a bencher at Gray’s Inn. Alex knew Sir William Mars-Jones, who concealed Dafydd’s crimes for years.

Now I’ve named more big wigs who oversee the activities of the paedophiles’ friends, I’ll finish off this post by identifying a few others who were witnesses to the wrongdoing themselves.

Firstly, Dr Vicky De Hoxa. I don’t know where Vicky is now, but until about 10 years ago she, her husband Robert and their friends ran a Christian healing centre at Bala. Vicky and her husband Robert were both Top Doctors, as was their business partner, I think he was called Peter. There was quite a demand for the services of Vicky and her colleagues, because a lot of people in Gwynedd simply could not get NHS treatment. Vicky heard some real horror stories and I gave her a blow by blow account of what was happening to me. Vicky did not accuse me of lying but she did become obviously very frightened by what she was hearing. She told me that after speaking to me and others, she could only conclude that there was ‘something evil’ at the Hergest Unit. There was, it was the staff. Vicky told me frankly that there were mental health units which were as dangerous as the Hergest Unit and the Gov’t would not close them down because under the provisions of the Mental Health Act, there has to be ‘hospital places’ for sectioned patients. Vicky also admitted that when units become as troubled as the Hergest Unit, good doctors simply won’t work there. Vicky and Robert’s own daughter was a Top Doctor in Leicester.

Vicky and her friends suddenly left north Wales some years ago, not long after they arrived. They didn’t give anyone much warning and a lot of patients were quite bereft. Vicky and her colleagues had invested much money into the Centre and it doubled up as a hotel. They had moved to Bala with the intention of beginning a long term project. There was a rumour going around that Vicky et al had sold the building because the business partners had fallen out with each other. I’d be very surprised if that was true, I saw no signs of friction among them, they took their Christianity seriously and I think they had all known each other for years. I think it very much more likely that Vicky and her friends fled, because they found something evil. The remains of the Westminster Paedophile Ring. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if they had been threatened. There were witnesses talking to Vicky, including me.

Another person who knows a great deal about the abuse of patients and crime in Ysbyty Gwynedd is Romy Lawson, who used to work at Bangor University. I used to share an office with Romy and I knew that one of her closest friends was a nurse who worked in the A&E Dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Romy and her friend, Clare, knew what was happening to me and to other patients. Romy was always very careful what she said in front of me, but one day I was burrowing about in some cupboards and Romy and her friends did not realise that I was there. They were having an intense discussion about the neglect and abuse of mental health patients at the Hergest Unit and how Clare and the other staff in the A&E would call out the mental health staff when suicidal patients turned up in A&E, only to be told by the Hergest staff that they would not treat them. Romy was also discussing how the police were begging the Top Docs to treat suicidal patients, but Top Docs were snapping ‘we will not treat them’. The discussion moved on to how many Hergest patients were killing themselves after being refused treatment. I felt uncomfortable eavesdropping, so I showed myself and said yes, that is what is happening, they are unlawfully refusing to treat anyone who has complained. The room went silent and the conversation was changed to another subject.

I know why. It was because people were dying and Clare and her colleagues were implicated because no-one would blow the whistle. Romy doesn’t work at Bangor any longer. When Brown and me began publishing with regard to what was happening in the mental health services Romy emigrated. Just before Operation Pallial re-opened the investigation into the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal. Romy is now Professor Romy Lawson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia.

If anyone visits Perth and bumps into Romy, how about asking her and her old pal Clare to make a statement about those patients whom they knew were being left to die? Romy might know a lot more as well. For years she worked as a warden in the halls of residence and told me how often she’d had to look after suicidal students because there was no functioning mental health service in Bangor. Romy commented that all she could do was ‘mop up the blood’ while she waited for the student’s parents to come and take them home.

Just one more thought re Romy. She wasn’t Welsh, she was from Manchester. She had grown up with a famous next door neighbour – the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, the notorious James Anderton (see post ‘Rab Butler, High Table and The Founding Fathers’). Anderton was infamous for having an obsession with gays and prostitutes while his police force had been taken over by serious organised crime. Before Anderton retired, worrying stories appeared about him in the media suggesting that he was, er, mad. Anderton’s supporters robustly denied them, maintaining that these were smears from Anderton’s foes. So I asked Romy what he was like, as she had lived next door to him for years. She rolled around laughing and said ‘he was completely mad’. I asked if she meant that he was extreme in his anti-gay views. She replied that no, he’s mad, everyone knew it, we all kept away from him and he had his whole garden rigged out with special lights to catch evil spirits.

I could understand why Romy as a teenager was so entertained by her mad neighbour who was the highest ranking police officer in Greater Manchester. However, as competent adults in her 30s, she and her friend should not have been colluding with a bunch of maniacs at the Hergest Unit who were known to be leaving seriously ill people to die if they had made a complaint against the hospital.

Another rather more unlikely witness. Someone who works at Pentraeth Automotive near Menai Bridge who was a friend of Tony Francis. I don’t know his name, but he is either the owner of the garage or the senior manager. There were complaints about his behaviour towards women and it was Tony Francis who was reassuring everyone that he knew this man – he certainly did, Tony and his wife Sadie always had top of the range cars purchased from Pentraeth Automotive – and that it was the women who were the problem not the man at the garage. Which is what Francis said about me when I complained about Gwynne the lobotomist and Dafydd.

I heard another interesting account of the business practices of Pentraeth Automotive, this time involving ‘the boss’, a man called Ken. When I was working in a truly appalling care home on Anglesey in 2000, I witnessed a care assistant slap an elderly lady, catch the elderly lady’s skin with her fingernails and draw blood. I reported the assault to the care home owners and I was given a written warning for ‘breaching confidentiality’ when I admitted that I’d told another care assistant what happened. I walked out a couple of weeks later when I witnessed yet more abuse of patients. (I have blogged about all of this in a previous post.) Before I witnessed the care assistant assault the old lady, the care assistant told me that she and her husband purchased a car from Ken at Pentraeth Automotive on an HP agreement and within weeks couldn’t afford to pay for it. Ken announced that he would repossess the car. I thought oh well, fair enough, if you haven’t got the dosh. Not so. The slapping care assistant and her husband had an enormous row with Ken, let him know that they had the details of his many illegal practices and thus Ken let them keep the car without paying for it.

Why did the slapping care assistant not have the money for the car? Because her husband was keen on hard core porn which he was having imported at great cost. The slapping care assistant and her porn addicted husband had a teenaged son who was a student on a catering course at Coleg Menai. Because the family’s income was all going on porn, the Coleg Menai student applied for a hardship grant. He bloody well got it as well, I didn’t know any others who did. The slapping care assistant told me that she knew that her son had his head screwed on right because when the hardship grant arrived, he used it to buy some ‘good name trackie bottoms’.

I thought that the whole saga involving this family was hilarious – except for the slapping of a bedridden old lady – and I gave a full account to Brown. Brown told me that he agreed with the slapping care assistant, her son knew what he was doing. We didn’t have good name trackie bottoms, we didn’t have a hardship grant yet we weren’t importing hard core porn from Europe either. Neither did we have a car that we weren’t paying for. We haven’t scarpered to Australia and been given jobs as Deputy VCs either.

After making a merciful escape from the dreadful care home, Bryn Ceirios at Pentraeth, imagine my surprise when some months later I saw a feature in the local paper, placed by Coleg Menai, about their ‘star adult learner’. It was the slapping care assistant, the mum of the young man with good name trackie bottoms and the inhabitant of the house full of grumble vids fresh from Europe. Well Dorothy Griffiths, my real problem with you is that you violently assaulted an elderly lady and then did a deal with two negligent home owners to ensure that you remained in your job while I was the one who received a warning. However, the events involving Ken at Pentraeth Automotive, the European porn, the hardship grant and the good name trackie bottoms were certainly interesting, but what is most interesting of all is how with a track record like that, you managed to persuade Coleg Menai to award you their star learner gong and feature you in the local paper. Oooh let me guess – you had a load of shit on them???

The Top Doctors continue to make regular media appearances, firmly in denial regarding their own contribution to the parlous state of the NHS. BBC News Wales has featured Dr Mark Taubert, dispensing his wisdom about the difficulties of predicting how long terminally ill patients have to live. Dr Taubert is a palliative care specialist treating cancer patients, so I can understand that he can’t be precise when patients ask him how long they’ve got left, but it was a real laugh at the Hergest Unit to witness the Top Docs refuse to waste their time treating severely depressed people because they’re only going to kill themselves anyway. Do you know, the Top Docs were right, loads of those patients killed themselves. Years ago I asked Dafydd why there was such a high suicide rate among his patients. He put on a grave voice and told me that four out of ten severely mentally ill people end up killing themselves. Not only did Dafydd get the stats wrong, but he failed to address my point – why were there just so many people killing themselves in north Wales? Not that anyone gave a stuff, because ‘they all kill themselves anyway’.

Dr Mark Taubert isn’t Dafydd, Dr Taubert is a senior lecturer and Clinical Director at Velindre Hospital, which treats cancer patients in Cardiff. Welsh politicians love Velindre, they do like to pop down for a photo opportunity. Rhodri Morgan always managed to make it over to Velindre, as he refused to address the genocide in north Wales.

I found some interesting media coverage regarding Dr Taubert. Dr Taubert knows how to drum up a bit of good publicity for himself. In 2016 Dr Taubert achieved headlines after he wrote to David Bowie, thanking him for being an inspiration (what else??). What had Bowie done that was so inspirational? He’d died. Dr Taubert didn’t write to Bowie before his death, because David Bowie wanted a bit of privacy and no-one knew that he was dying. So Dr Taubert got in on the act and wrote to Bowie after his death. Not that he sent the letter to David Bowie – Dr Taubert uploaded his letter to David Bowie on the BMJ blog, so the world could read what he’d written to Bowie! No-one wrote back to Taubert and said why are you writing letters to dead people on the BMJ blog you publicity seeking tosser, but Duncan Jones – Bowie’s son – and Benedict Cumberbatch did write back to Dr Taubert thanking him on behalf of the dead rock star. This guaranteed full media coverage.

Dr Taubert’s letter to David Bowie observes that Bowie ‘chose’ to die at home and Taubert ponders on his own patients making such choices. Not only has Taubert wisely kept schtum about the multi millionaire Bowie choosing to live in Switzerland and not risk his neck with NHS Wales – Bowie probably heard about the circumstances in which Anne Clwyd’s husband died at the University Hospital in Cardiff – but Taubert fails to mention that most terminally ill patients do not have the choice of dying at home. There is huge pressure on people to die in hospital, where one’s final hours can consist of being dumped naked on a bed with one’s glass of water out of reach. Even if things are not as grim as that, the real biggie for cancer patients is that they can’t get the pain relief that they need if they stay at home and there’s bugger all home support available to nurse the dying. So unlike millionaires in Switzerland, they don’t have ‘choices’.

Mark’s letter to David Bowie waxed lyrical about Bowie’s music and stage personas. It didn’t mention the years that Bowie spent with a serious drug problem, which would have caused him to be refused treatment if he were an NHS patient in Gwynedd. It didn’t mention the bisexual swinging with the sort of young people whom Dafydd and the gang trafficked to London and Brighton and it didn’t mention the incredibly acrimonious divorce between Bowie and his wife Angie, which resulted in Angie threatening to go public about a great many things but being gagged by David and his expensive lawyers.

David Bowie was one of those who played at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert on 20 April 1992, following Mercury’s death from AIDS. Like Bowie, Mercury kept his condition very quiet, although there are indications that he had known that he was HIV positive for a long time before he told even close friends.

The proceeds of the Tribute Concert were donated to AIDS research. My post ‘Apocalypse Now’ details the establishment of the first specialist AIDS hospice in the UK, the former Mildmay Mission Hospital in the East End. Most of the young men who died there were rent boys, many who had been trafficked from children’s homes in north Wales. The Top Docs and AIDS researchers knew that. These witnesses to serious crime died surrounded by staff who ensured that no-one ever found out how they had become infected. The Mildmay did have some celebrity patients and I wondered if one of them had been Freddie Mercury, judging from the account that I read.

The dying rent boys at the flagship AIDS ward at UCH/Middlesex Hospital were filmed shaking hands with Diana, with the viewers being told that they had no-one in the world because their families had rejected them for being gay. No, they had been taken away from their families and sent to Dafydd and the paedophiles. Those who did have families who rejected them were rejected because they were sex workers rather than because they were gay. The celebs were not filmed shaking hands with Di. People worked very hard to give them complete privacy.

Most of the stars who played at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert knew that many of those with whom they had often had sex were kids in care. They might not have realised the brutality that had been involved in coercing the kids into prostitution, but they did know that they were underage and they did know that they weren’t living at home with families. No-one bothered to enquire further.

Lastly, I think it is time that I exposed someone upon whom many patients and relatives in north Wales pinned a lot of hopes but who has let them down very badly. Donna Ockenden. Donna Ockenden conducted the ‘independent investigation’ into the Tawel Fan Scandal at the Betsi. Donna wrote an interim report about Tawel Fan which was hard hitting (see post ‘The Tawel Fan Scandal’) and she then conducted a second investigation, promising to leave no stone unturned and expose just how bad the situation was, if necessary. We all waited with baited breath. Donna produced her final report a few weeks ago. It was damning, but like every other report into care scandals in north Wales, it did not admit just how bad things are in mental health in north Wales. Patients and relatives accused Donna of a luke-warm response or even a cover-up. I presumed that Donna was going to return to do a bit more work in north Wales. No. Donna has gone. So I’ll brief readers as to the evidence that Donna ignored.

After Donna wrote her first report she stated that she wanted to hear from any mental health patients in north Wales who were not happy with the ‘services’. I was one who contacted Donna. I spoke to her on the phone and she reassured me that she had serious concerns about the Betsi and was determined to expose any rot that there was. I e mailed Donna masses of evidence – witness statements, e mail correspondence, insulting letters to me from NHS personnel refusing to investigate the most serious of complaints. I also forwarded evidence relating to another patient in north Wales, with their permission, who had become too ill to do this themselves. They had been imprisoned on the basis of the perjury of Hergest staff and then refused all NHS treatment.

Donna was given documentary evidence of perjury, perverting the course of justice, conspiracy, assault on patients, unlawful imprisonment, destruction of evidence by NHS senior managers and unlawful denial of NHS care. Donna asked me if I would meet her and a surgeon from England who was assisting with the investigation in an hotel in north Wales to discuss what had happened to me and others. Some days later, after I sent yet further evidence of serious crime on the part of the NHS and social services in north Wales, Donna e mailed me and asked if we could postpone the meeting until she’d had a chance to meet with other patients and relatives. I never heard from her again. I subsequently had to leave Wales for my own safety, but Donna had my e mail address. Neither did she or her surgeon colleague contact me again regarding the evidence pertaining to the other patient that I sent her. He ended up going abroad for life-saving treatment because the NHS flatly unlawfully refused to treat him.

So Donna has written her report and she’s gone. She was given documentary evidence of serious organised crime. Donna, you should not have fled, you should have taken it to the police. We tried the police ourselves again and again, but we were just threatened when we did so. You and the surgeon have just buggered off and left patients in north Wales to die.

Donna’s background is in midwifery and senior NHS management. She has also worked in the United Arab Emirates. I recommend that readers visit her website and note her numerous senior and advisory positions. Donna is described as a ‘catalyst for change’. She hasn’t been in north Wales, she got the hell out of there and abandoned the patients to a bunch of gangsters.

There’s something nasty in the woodshed in north Wales. It’s so nasty that no-one will go near it.

No One Is Innocent

BBC News Wales, the ‘Daily Post’ and the ‘Western Mail’ have reported that 71 year old Bryan Davies has been found guilty at Mold Crown Court of 29 historical sex offences against boys who lived at the ‘private children’s home’ Ystrad Hall in Llangollen in the late 1970s, where Bryan Davies was Deputy Principal.

Yes, Bryan Davies is one who has been apprehended as a result of Operation Pallial. During the trial three more men came forward to say that they’d been abused by Davies as boys. The Operation Pallial team re-interviewed eight other men who had previously made complaints against Davies.

Davies was initially arrested in Oct 2013 in relation to him contacting three boys over the internet and inciting them to take part in sexual acts. While on bail Davies fled to Malta but was arrested under a European arrest warrant and extradited to the UK. Davies had been living in Sussex.

It was reported that Bryan Davies went on the run during the trial, was found in an hotel in Folkestone, slit his throat and was taken to King’s College Hospital in order to be operated on. I think that is why sentencing has not taken place yet. Davies is due to be sentenced on June 1.

Bryan Davies is one of those who was somehow not apprehended by the 1991-93 North Wales Police investigation into the abuse of children in care and of course the £13 million Waterhouse Inquiry also missed Bryan Davies. From what is being reported, boys complained about Davies assaulting them years ago. So there is now a 71 year old paedophile in King’s College Hospital following a suicide attempt.

I have argued previously on this blog that pursuing the now elderly sex offenders who were afforded complete protection by every part of the British state whilst witnesses and victims were murdered is farcical. However, it seems that Bryan Davies has continued his sex offending into old age, so yes, bringing him to trial can be justified because he was still active.

Sadly many of the people who knew about Bryan Davies’s offences years ago and protected him will never stand trial because they were all guaranteed legal indemnity if they agreed to give evidence at the Waterhouse Inquiry, even if they lied. For example these people:

Dr Dafydd Alun Jones

Cledwyn Williams

Lucille Hughes

Neither will the people who protected the people pictured above ever stand trial.

Such as the man on the left in this photo:

Old Warwickians - 1940s-1960s School House Dinner

Or indeed this man, who spends his days in the Lords:
William Hague Foreign Secretary (2010).jpg

Neither will any of the many people who looked the other way as some of us were screaming as loudly as we could ever stand trial. Such as:

Michael Mansfield QC 04.jpg

Many others who passed by on the other side can be found in the Commons, in the Lords, running the UK’s health and care system or in the Inns of Court. I’m sure that they will be delighted at the conviction of one 71 year old man and use this to reassure us that there is Zero Tolerance re sex offences in our nation.

Another glass of champagne Professor Bluglass?

My post ‘Feet In Chains’ suggested that Dafydd, the paedophiles and their friends should all be detained in one of Dafydd’s own ‘nursing homes’ under the Mental Capacity or Mental Health Act – they would be treated far worse in there than they ever would be in prison. If pigs started flying and Dafydd was ever put on trial and imprisoned, he would be one of those celebrity prisoners who receive special treatment because of their links with organised crime, such as Ronnie Kray did when he was in Broadmoor. When it was revealed that Ronnie Kray was being supplied with luxuries and privileges and that the Angels of Broadmoor deferred to him, a number of politicians appeared in the media fuming.  What did they expect? Jimmy Savile and his mate had been appointed managers – by Thatcher’s Health Minister Trumpers – and two of the civil service mandarins in the Dept of Health at the time were known associates of paedophiles (see posts ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’ and ‘The Old Devils’). Furthermore, it was Top Doctors like Dafydd and Bluglass who decided who ended up in Broadmoor and it was their Top Doctor mates at Broadmoor who decided what ‘treatment programmes’ patients were placed on.

Whilst pondering on the Ronnie Kray and Broadmoor business, I remembered another high profile villain of yesteryear who did so well out of the inadequacies of the British criminal justice system that I can only conclude that, like Ronnie Kray – who was mates with various well-connected people such as Lord Bob Boothby, the bisexual swinging Conservative politician who had an affair with Harold Macmillan’s wife Dorothy as well as a great many other people – this man had help from people in high places. I am thinking of Ronnie Biggs.

My post ‘So Who Was Angry About What?’ mentions that in late 1962/early 1963, two west country farmers in financial difficulties received a letter from a London solicitor inviting them to a meeting where they ‘would hear something to their benefit’. The farmers had barely visited London in their lives and had never heard of the solicitor, Theodore Goddard. They were then visited by a rep of Theodore Goddard who offered them cash to the value of their farm but didn’t actually want to buy it off them. Theodore Goddard wanted them to move out of the farm for a few months, allow the clients of Theodore Goddard to ‘use the farm’ and then move back in. The farmers were terrified and presumed that they were dealing with crooks, so refused the generous offer. The farmers subsequently put their farm on the market and as they were shifting all their stuff out, the farmer’s wife told me that Theodore Goddard turned up again with literally cases of used notes, telling them what idiots they were not to do the deal. The Great Train Robbery happened months later and the farmers noticed the similarity of the farm used by Biggs et al to their own. They had no proof that the weird letter and worrying men from Theodore Goddard were connected to Mr Biggs et al but they never stopped wondering. They kept the letter for years which was how they were able to give me details of what was in it.

A further twist was that one reason why the farmers had ended up in such financial difficulty was that they had done business with a company of which Harold Macmillan’s son was a Director and they had been ripped off – along with a lot of other farmers. The company had contracted farmers to breed and raise pigs on their behalf, but no-one was ever paid – I was told that it was quite a well-known scandal at the time and that a lot of people lost a lot of money, after having been duped into doing business with a company starring Maurice Macmillan, because after all he was the PM’s son, so it had to be OK.

I was reminded of all this last summer when I read a biography of Bertrand Russell. Russell used his solicitors to really shaft people, including his own son John, who had mental health problems. Russell’s solicitors were Theodore Goddard. My post ‘So Who Was Angry About What?’ details the trail of havoc and broken lives that Russell left in his wake and his highly sexually exploitative ways. Members of Russell’s family had a penchant for acquiring diagnoses of schizophrenia and Russell was always ready to stress their unacceptable and unfathomable behaviour and what a trial for him it was to have Mental Illness In The Family. People close to Russell’s Mad Relatives told a story of Russell behaving appallingly, of abuse and intimidation and of Top Docs being asked by Russell to bang up those bloody relatives who were making such a nuisance of themselves.

One of Russell’s relatives who had a particularly hard time was his granddaughter Lucy, who set fire to herself and as a result died at the age of 26. Lucy had been virtually brought up by Russell, after he succeeded in having her father deemed as too crackers to have custody of his own daughter. Like her dad, Lucy was told that she had schizophrenia. Before this diagnosis Lucy had told people that she felt very uncomfortable about her grandfather’s behaviour towards her…

Russell spent his later years living at Penrhyndeudraeth in what is now Gwynedd. It was there that Lucy lived with him for extended periods of time. The area in which Russell lived was an interesting one sociologically because of the presence of an Anglo-Welsh aristocrat nearby, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Clough owned an estate in Cwm Croesor and let his properties out to his friends – many of whom were well-known bohemians, activists and writers – during the middle years of the 20th century. A great many well-known people passed through Cwm Croesor. The most famous ones were people like Eric Hobsbawm and E.P. Thompson, but a bit of digging throws up a picture of, it seems, nearly every high profile artist/writer/activist crashing out there for at least some time. They were referred to as the Welsh Bloomsbury set.

Some of Clough’s circle were moneyed aristocrats. I recently purchased an extract from Bertrand Russell’s diaries in which he recorded his visits to Clough’s place with his friends and most of those mentioned are landowning gentry from across north Wales, such as Lord and Lady Aberconway. Russell also spent time with Woodrow Wyatt – Wyatt was a man who, although he was a Labour MP, ended up as an adviser to and friend of Margaret Thatcher (An Appalling Vista’).

So Cwm Croesor attracted a curious mix of posh people, bohemians, Communists and peace activists, some of whom wanted to start a revolution. Then there were the local people – Welsh speakers who worked in quarrying or farming. Croesor was probably the first Welsh speaking area in north Wales to experience mass inward migration of English people. I collected data for a community study of Croesor some six years ago and I found that although at one time the local people seemed to live quite harmoniously with the visitors, by the early 1970s relationships had become quite fraught. Various people made various suggests as to why that was, but I don’t want to publish that here.

What is salient regarding this blog is that I discovered that Dafydd et al had impacted on Croesor. Which is hardly surprising – Dafydd and Gwynne the lobotomist impacted everywhere. In 1964 the social anthropologist Isabel Emmett published ‘A North Wales Village: A Social Anthropological Study’, a community study of Llanfrothen, the village just down the road from Croesor. Isabel was a social anthropologist from Manchester University who married a man from Llanfrothen and she knew the community well. Her book caused a degree of aggro because some of the villagers felt that she’d sleighted them. Isabel mentioned for example that there was a high rate of illegitimacy in this Nonconformist Welsh speaking village. One of the villagers made the point to me in defence of his village’s reputation that ‘all those illegitimate children belonged to one mother’.

Another book was written about life in Croesor by Philip O’Connor, ‘Living In Croesor’ and another of the writers who lived there wrote a novel based on people whom he knew in the village.

Material written about Croesor/Llanfrothen often contains the observation that there was a degree of distress and dysfunction on the part of some people in the area. That is of course true of everywhere, but in some of the relationships between people in Croesor/Llanfrothen there were substantial power differentials. Isabel’s book mentions that certain Top Doctors and lawyers in the wider region were in such powerful positions that people really did fear crossing their paths, because ruination would result. When I read that, I immediately wondered ‘Dafydd and Gwynne?’ I now wonder ‘William Mars-Jones?’ as well.

Then I read a terribly sad account of a young woman who had been taken down to Croesor by her new husband in the 1950s/60s, a man much older than her, where they lived in very difficult circumstances. Or at least she did. He buried himself in his poetry and writing, drank very heavily and went out to see his mates. He then left her for another woman. What happened to her? Er – she was declared mad and taken to the North Wales Hospital where she stayed until it closed decades later. Or as we now know, until only parts of the hospital closed. She was finally released in the 1990s, an old lady, who was parked in Betws-y-Coed to live out her days. The precipitating factor that caused this woman’s crisis was, I seem to remember, a pregnancy that her husband wasn’t too happy about…

I know enough about Dafydd and Gwynne to know that influential yet exploitative/abusive people with money who might want to shut someone up would find Dafydd and Gwynne very useful. Bertrand Russell was living at Penrhyndeudraeth when he was informing Theodore Goddard that members of his family were insane and should be locked up in their own interests.

Dafydd! Did you perchance ever have dealings with a Nobel Prize winning polymath peace campaigning friend of Tariq Ali who wasn’t quite what the wider world thought that he was? I think we should be told.

I was told by one of my interviewees that there had been a big problem in the area because until – I think – 1968, there was no Welsh speaking social worker available, so Welsh people were being hauled off to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh on the basis of an interview conducted in a foreign language. An advance had allegedly been made when a Welsh speaking social worker was appointed, from the locality. Of course I think that people should be assessed in a language that they speak – and feel comfortable with – if they are at risk of being hauled off to an asylum. But this is Dafydd and Gwynne we are talking about. They could have offered interviews in English, Welsh and Japanese and decisions would still not have been taken in the best interests of the patient.

Dafydd and Gwynne were running a hell-hole with a dungeon in which they incarcerated the victims of a paedophile gang. The Welsh-speaking social worker would have been working for Dafydd and Gwynne.

I was not given the name of the Welsh speaking social worker who’s presence at Croesor was supposed to constrain the activities of the paedophiles’ friends, but in about 2004 I had an encounter with a Welsh speaking social worker who lived in Croesor.

This was at the height of my battles with the Arfon Community Mental Health Team, after I had narrowly escaped prison following yet another attempt to frame me and after many years of enduring Keith Fearns’s unpleasantness and harassment in the face of Gwynedd Social Services flat refusal to take action against Fearns.

So some thirteen years ago I decided to try and obtain a copy of my records from Gwynedd Social Services. Someone had told me that Fearns et al now had a new manager who was actually trying to address their dreadful conduct. That manager was a man called Merfyn Hughes (full name Thomas Merfyn Hughes). I ended up having a phone conversation with Mr Hughes – it was a fraught conversation because Mr Hughes insisted on referring to me as a ‘service user’. I told him that I wasn’t a ‘service user’, I was a human being and furthermore I had never received a ‘service’ from Fearns and the Arfon Team, only constant aggro. However to be fair to him, Mr Hughes told me that he would request a copy of the records that the Arfon Team had compiled on me (even though I had never been a ‘client’ of theirs). Further telephone calls to Mr Hughes revealed that the Arfon Team were ignoring his requests. So Mr Hughes told me that he would personally visit the Arfon Team’s offices and retrieve the records himself. I understand that he did do this. I did eventually receive a copy of these records, although the harassment from Fearns et al continued. However I was later told that Merfyn Hughes had never managed to get the Arfon Team under control and that he had now retired.

In 2011 I was told that a man who had once been Elfyn Llwyd’s electoral agent (Llwyd is a barrister and the former Plaid MP for Dwyfor Meirionydd) had been found dead in rather strange circumstances. This job description didn’t mean anything to me – but I was then told his name, Merfyn Hughes and that he’d been a social worker with Gwynedd. I realised that this was the man who had braved Fearns and extracted my files in person.

I googled the story and found this newspaper report detailing Mr Hughes’s death http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/man-died-after-falling-down-1845258

So the inquest at Caernarfon held by the notorious Dewi Pritchard Jones  heard that Merfyn had been drinking in the Bron Danw Arms and that the pub landlord had said that he ‘wasn’t sober’. He left the pub at 2 am to walk home. He never got home – his body was found 36 hours later in the garden of somebody else’s house, behind a greenhouse, at the bottom of an embankment and could not be seen from the road or the house. Detective Inspector Brian Kearney stated that there were marks on the footpath above the embankment consistent with someone having rolled down the embankment and that one of Mr Hughes’s shoelaces was undone. A postmortem showed no signs of a head injury and tests showed little alcohol in his blood at the time of death. Pathologist Mark Lord said that death was due to hypothermia.

Dewi recorded a verdict of accidental death and then reached a quite extraordinary conclusion as to how Mr Hughes’s death occurred, even by Dewi’s standards – ‘he somehow slipped and fell down the embankment but nothing to show he tried to get out. It appears that he fell asleep, the cold took over and he later died’. Now I don’t know about Dewi, but if I fell down an embankment in the early hours of the morning and landed in someone else’s garden, I don’t think that I’d then decide to have a nap on the spot rather than try to get out. And even if I did make such a decision I very much doubt that I’d be able to get such a good night’s sleep that I’d die of hypothermia somewhere along the way. And if the pub landlord had stated that Merfyn ‘wasn’t sober’, why was there ‘little alcohol’ in his blood at the time of death? It’s also fascinating that at some point after falling down the embankment, going to sleep and dying, Mr Hughes managed to conceal his body behind a greenhouse in a spot where it could not be seen from the road or house.

People in Gwynedd have become used to reading Dewi’s bizarre speculations when people with mental health problems have been found dead – but it would seem that people working in the mental health services are also found dead in inexplicable circumstances, only for Dewi Pritchard Jones to conjure up a most unlikely explanation for their death.

Anyone for re-opening an investigation into Merfyn Hughes’s death? Let alone for doing a bit of digging regarding the identity of the tame Top Doctor whom Bertrand Russell had on tap and finding out how many vulnerable people who had been stung by Russell’s mates were hauled off to Denbigh, suffering from the vapours/a wandering womb/spermattorrhea/cottage ignition syndrome/paranoid schizophrenia/manic depressive insanity or other serious conditions that Europe’s leading forensic psychiatrist knows all about?

‘Denbigh is unique’ – Dafydd, circa 1994.

To return to Ronnie Biggs, who may perhaps have known a firm of solicitors called Theodore Goddard.

John Theodore Goddard founded the law firm bearing his name based in London. The firm merged with Addleshaw Booth & Co in May 2003 to become Addleshaw Goddard. Theodore Goddard was the solicitor appointed by Wallis Simpson as an adviser to her during divorce proceedings. When King Edward VIII’s intention to marry Wallis became known, Goddard became closely involved in the abdication negotiations, at the behest of PM Stanley Baldwin. Goddard personally negotiated with Wallis, the King and the PM.

Theodore Goddard’s early reputation enabled him to attract as a valuable client the newly created office of the Public Trustee. It was the Public Trustee who collaborated with Dafydd when he fleeced Mary Wynch decades later.

John Theodore Goddard retired as senior partner in 1950 and died in 1952. The 1950s saw a period of further growth through amalgamation with, in particular, the City firm of Deacons & Pritchard (founded in 1834) and the firm of Rhys Roberts & Co (founded in 1883 by future PM David Lloyd George, a partner of the firm until his Parliamentary duties grew too burdensome).

The firm was again caught up in the Profumo Affair. In 1963, then senior partner Derek Clogg was instructed by Profumo. At the time of the Profumo Affair, Lord Astor was married to his third wife, Bronwen. Bronwen went to school in Dolgellau and was the daughter of a Welsh judge. See post ‘In Memoriam – Bronwen, Lady Astor’ for details of the Profumo Affair, the involvement of Trumpers and others. Theodore Goddard & Co was referred to in Hansard as ‘a solicitor of the highest reputation and widest experience’ who ‘has had great experience in cases dealing with libel, with divorce and all those matters where human frailty and possible lying may come into account’. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Theodore Goddard & Co attracted many company clients and the commercial side of the practice grew rapidly.

More recently Theodore Goddard has retained a strong media and entertainment law practice alongside a private client capability (including private tax work for members of The Rolling Stones and David Bowie). The firm occasionally gave rise to high-profile cases involving celebrities including the firm’s instruction in relation to the ‘Hello!’ magazine dispute over photographs of Catherine Zeta-Jones wedding to and its appointment by Michael Jackson to advise on the ‘Living With Michael’ documentary.

Ronnie Biggs was born in Lambeth and in 1947, at age 18, Biggs enlisted in the RAF. He was dishonourably discharged two years later, after breaking into a local chemist shop. One month after that, he was convicted of stealing a car and sentenced to prison. On his release, he took part in a failed robbery attempt of a bookmaker office in Lambeth. During his incarceration in HMP Wandsworth, he met Bruce Reynolds, The Brains in the Great Train Robbery.

After his third prison sentence, Biggs tried to go straight and trained as a carpenter. In Feb 1960, he married Charmian. Biggs, who needed money to fund a deposit on the purchase of a house for his family, was working on the house of a train driver who was about to retire. The driver’s real name is unknown, since he was never caught. He was the one who introduced Biggs to the train robbery plot.

The gang then stopped the mail train from Glasgow to London in the early hours of 8 Aug 1963. The robbery yielded the participants £2.6 million (equivalent to £49 million in 2017); Biggs’s share was £147,000 (equivalent to £2,824,900 in 2018). Three weeks later, Biggs was arrested in South London, along with 11 other members of the gang. In 1964, nine of the 15-strong gang, including Biggs, were jailed for the crime. Most received sentences of 30 years. Lord Edmund-Davies was the judge who presided over the trial and many thought that the sentences were too severe. Edmund-Davies was one of the paedophiles’ friends of Wales.

Biggs served 15 months before escaping from Wandsworth Prison on 8 July 1965, scaling the wall with a rope ladder and dropping onto a waiting removal van. He fled to Brussels by boat, then sent a note to his wife to join him in Paris where he had acquired new identity papers and was undergoing plastic surgery. During his time in prison, Charmian had started an extramarital relationship and was pregnant by the time of his escape to the Continent. Choosing to support her husband, she had an illegal abortion in London and then travelled with their two sons to Paris to join Biggs.

So thus far, it sounds as though there were some helpful prison officers who didn’t see anything or hear anything and some Top Docs willing to assist without asking questions.

In 1966, Biggs fled to Australia. By that time Biggs and his family had spent all but £7,000 (equivalent to £119,700 in 2018) of his £147,000 share of the train robbery proceeds: £40,000 (equivalent to £683,800 in 2018) on plastic surgery in Paris; £55,000 (equivalent to £940,200 in 2018) paid as a package deal to get him out of the UK to Australia; and the rest on legal fees and expenses.

LEGAL FEES?? He was an escaped robber…Was the bill from Theodore Goddard?

In 1967, Biggs received an anonymous letter from Britain telling him that Interpol suspected that he was in Australia, so he moved from Sydney to Melbourne. Biggs had a number of jobs in Melbourne before undertaking set construction work at the Channel 9 TV studios. In Oct 1969, a newspaper report by a Reuters correspondent revealed that Biggs was living in Melbourne and claimed that police were closing in on him. Biggs fled his home, staying with family friends in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Five months later, he fled on a passenger liner from the Port of Melbourne, using the altered passport of a friend; his wife and sons remained in Australia. Twenty days later, the ship berthed in Panama and within two weeks Biggs had flown to Brazil.

Following disclosure of Biggs’ fathering a child in Brazil, Charmian agreed to a divorce which was completed in 1976. Allowed by authorities to remain in Australia, she sold her story for £40,000 to an Australian media group to enable her to purchase the rented house that the family had lived in at the time of Biggs’s flight to Brazil. Charmian later became an editor, publisher and journalist. Her sons—who later visited Biggs a few times in Brazil— live anonymously. In 2012 Charmian acted as a consultant on the five-part ITV Studios docu-drama Mrs Biggs.

In 1970, when Biggs arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil did not have an extradition treaty with the UK. In 1974, ‘Daily Express’ reporter Colin MacKenzie received information suggesting that Biggs was in Rio de Janeiro. This confirmed and the story broke. Jack Slipper of the Yard arrived soon afterwards, but Biggs could not be extradited because his girlfriend, nightclub dancer Raimunda de Castro, was pregnant. Brazilian law at the time did not allow a parent of a Brazilian child to be extradited.

During 1974, in Rio, Biggs, collaborated others to record Mailbag Blues, a musical narrative of his life that he intended to use as a movie soundtrack. This album was left undiscovered until it was finally released in 2004 by whatmusic.com.

In April 1977 Biggs attended a cocktail party on board a Royal Navy frigate which was in Rio for a courtesy visit, but he was not arrested. Though in Brazil he was safe from extradition, Biggs’s status as a known felon meant he could not work, visit bars or be away from home after 10:00 p.m. To provide an income, Biggs’s family hosted barbecues at his home in Rio, where tourists could meet Biggs and hear him recount his involvement in the robbery. Biggs was even visited by former footballer Stanley Matthews. Around this time, “Ronnie Biggs” mugs, coffee cups and T-shirts also appeared throughout Rio.

Biggs recorded vocals on two songs for ‘The Great Rock and Roll Swindle’, Julien Temple’s film about the Sex Pistols. Not only did Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon come to their ends in questionable circumstances, but one who knew them, Adam Ant aka Stuart Goddard, had some very bad experiences with the Top Docs, experiences which Stuart Goddard was prevented from talking about in the media.

In March 1981, Biggs was kidnapped by a gang of British ex-soldiers. The boat they took him aboard suffered mechanical problems off Barbados and the stranded kidnappers and Biggs were rescued by the Barbados coastguard and towed into port. The kidnappers hoped to collect a reward from the British police; however, like Brazil, Barbados was found to have had no valid extradition treaty with the United Kingdom (a fact which chess player David Levy claimed to have paid lawyers to unearth) and Biggs was sent back to Brazil. In Feb 2006, Channel 4 aired a documentary featuring dramatisations of the attempted kidnapping and interviews with the ex-British Army soldier who carried it out. The ITN reporter Desmond Hamill paid to accompany Biggs on the private Learjet returning him to Brazil and secured an exclusive interview.

Biggs’s son by de Castro, Michael Biggs, eventually became a member of a successful children’s programme and music band, bringing a new source of income to his father. In a short time, however, the band faded into obscurity, leaving father and son in financial difficulty again.

In 1991, Biggs sang vocals for a German punk band and in 1993, Biggs sang on three tracks for an album by an Argentinian punk band.

In 1997 the UK and Brazil ratified an extradition treaty. Two months later, the UK Gov’t made a formal request to the Brazilian Gov’t for Biggs’s extradition. Biggs had stated that he would no longer oppose extradition. English lawyer Nigel Sangster QC travelled to Brazil to advise Biggs. The extradition request was rejected by the Brazilian Supreme Court, giving Biggs the right to live in Brazil for the rest of his life.

In 2001 Biggs announced to ‘The Sun’ newspaper that he would be willing to return to the UK. Having 28 years of his sentence left to serve, Biggs was aware that he would be detained upon arrival in Britain. His trip back on a private jet was paid for by ‘The Sun’, which reportedly paid Michael Biggs, Ronnie’s son, £20,000 plus other expenses in return for exclusive rights to the news story. Biggs arrived on 7 May 2001, whereupon he was immediately arrested and re-imprisoned.

Michael said that, contrary to some press reports, Biggs did not return to the UK simply to receive health care. On 14 November 2001, Biggs petitioned Governor Hynd of HMP Belmarsh for early release on compassionate grounds based on his poor health. He had been treated four times at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich in less than six months. His health was deteriorating rapidly and he asked to be released into the care of his son for his remaining days. The application was denied. On 10 Aug 2005, it was reported that Biggs had contracted MRSA. His representatives, seeking for his release on grounds of compassion, said that their client’s death was likely to be imminent. On 26 Oct 2005, the Home Secretary Charles Clarke declined his appeal stating that his illness was not terminal. Home Office compassion policy is to release prisoners with three months left to live. Biggs was claimed by Michael to need a tube for feeding and to have ‘difficulty’ speaking.

On 4 July 2007, Biggs was moved from Belmarsh Prison to Norwich Prison on compassionate grounds. In Dec 2007, Biggs issued a further appeal, from Norwich Prison, asking to be released from jail to die with his family: ‘I am an old man and often wonder if I truly deserve the extent of my punishment. I have accepted it and only want freedom to die with my family and not in jail. I hope Mr. Straw decides to allow me to do that. I have been in jail for a long time and I want to die a free man. I am sorry for what happened. It has not been an easy ride over the years. Even in Brazil I was a prisoner of my own making. There is no honour to being known as a Great Train Robber. My life has been wasted.’

In Jan 2009, after a series of strokes that were said to have rendered him unable to speak or walk, it was claimed in the press that Biggs was to be released in Aug 2009 and would die a ‘free man’. Michael had also claimed that the Parole Board might bring the release date forward to July 2009. On 13 Feb 2009, it was reported that Biggs had been taken to hospital from his cell at Norwich Prison, suffering from pneumonia. This was confirmed the following day by Michael, who said Biggs had serious pneumonia but was stable. News of his condition prompted fresh calls from Michael Biggs for his release on compassionate grounds.

On 23 April the Parole Board recommended that Biggs be released on 4 July, having served a third of his 30-year sentence. However, on 1 July Jack Straw did not accept the Parole Board’s recommendation and refused parole, stating that Biggs was ‘wholly unrepentant’. On 28 July 2009, Biggs was readmitted to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with pneumonia. He had been admitted to the same hospital a month earlier with a chest infection and a fractured hip but returned to prison on 17 July 2009. His son said: ‘It’s the worst he’s ever been. The doctors have just told me to rush there.’

On 30 July 2009, it was claimed by representatives of Biggs that he had been given ‘permission’ to challenge the decision to refuse him parole. However, the Home Office stated only that an application for the early release on compassionate grounds of a prisoner at HMP Norwich had been received by the public protection casework section in the National Offender Management Service. Biggs was released from custody on 6 August, two days before his 80th birthday, on ‘compassionate grounds’.

Following his release from prison, Biggs’s health improved, leading to suggestions that he might soon be moved from hospital to a nursing home. In response to claims that Biggs’s state of health had been faked, his lawyer stated, ‘This man is going to die, there is going to be no Lazarus coming back from the dead, he is ill, he is seriously ill.’ Biggs himself stated, ‘I’ve got a bit of living to do yet. I might even surprise them all by lasting until Christmas, that would be fantastic.’

On 29 May 2010, Biggs was again admitted to hospital in London after complaining of chest pain. He underwent tests at Barnet General Hospital. Michael stated that ‘he’s conscious but he’s in a lot of pain’. In Aug 2010, it was claimed by the ‘Sunday Mirror’ that Biggs would be attending a gala dinner where he would be collecting a lifetime achievement award for his services to crime.

On 10 Feb 2011, Biggs was admitted to Barnet General Hospital with another suspected stroke. Michael said he was conscious and preparing to have a CT scan and a series of other tests to determine what had happened. On 17 November 2011, Biggs launched his new and updated autobiography, ‘Ronnie Biggs: Odd Man Out – The Last Straw’, at Shoreditch House, London. He was unable to speak and used a Word board to communicate with the press.

On 12 Jan 2012, ITV Studios announced it had commissioned the drama ‘Mrs Biggs’.  Charmian Biggs acted as a consultant on the series and travelled to Britain from Australia to visit Biggs in Feb 2012, just before the filming.

In March 2013, Biggs attended the funeral of fellow train robber, Bruce Reynolds. In July 2013, ‘The Great Train Robbery 50th Anniversary:1963–2013′ was published, with input from Biggs and Reynolds.

On 18 Dec 2013, aged 84, Biggs died at the Carlton Court Care Home in Barnet. The Rev Dave Tomlinson officiated at Biggs’ funeral, for which he drew public criticism; Tomlinson responded to critics by reminding everyone ‘Judge not, that ye be not judged’.

Ronnie Biggs got a rather better deal out of the British criminal justice system and certainly from the NHS than any victim of Dafydd and the paedophiles ever did. Somehow they never managed to escape from prison, although a lot of them were found dead on the ‘medical wing’ in Risley Remand Centre. They didn’t continue to live for years after Top Docs stated that they should be released on compassionate grounds because the end was imminent, indeed a lot of them told Top Docs of serious health problems only to be told in response that there was nothing wrong with them. Neither were they feted by the media. They were denounced as nutters and addicts who had been ‘feral children’ or ‘out of control’ when they were young. If they ever demonstrated that they had been fitted up for crimes, they would be reminded that they were ‘no angel’ and ‘had got away with lots of other things’. But then they didn’t have access to the services of people like Theodore Goddard.

There were people who did object very strongly to the making of a folk hero out of Ronnie Biggs, but in his defence Biggs and co reminded everyone that he was an honest thief, he never killed nobody. The son of the train driver who was coshed on the head during the robbery pointed out that his dad never recovered from his injury. Biggs’ supporters retorted that the train driver died years later of an unrelated condition. Not only do head injuries have long term devastating consequences, but the Top Docs seemed to be keen to help Biggs et al and could well have decided not to flag up the degree of damage done to the train driver.

Even if Biggs et al had not injured anyone, the thing that worries me is the number of crooked professional people who were prepared to help Biggs and his mates. At least some of them will have been among those who helped Dafydd and the paedophiles. That is why, 50 yrs after John Allen opened the Bryn Alyn Community and after two police investigations, one ‘independent’ investigation and a £13 million Judicial Inquiry into the abuse of children in care in north Wales since 1974, a 71 year old paedophile is currently in King’s College Hospital after escaping during his trial, when he was finally charged with numerous offences that he committed 40 yrs ago. And still we are told that there was no cover-up in north Wales.

Career criminals like Brains Bruce Reynolds make contacts with corrupt professional people via many routes. However I note that before he embarked on his life of crime, Reynolds worked in the Middlesex Hospital. Which was where Gwynne the lobotomist trained and which supplied an alumni network that protected him until the day that he died. In old age, of cancer. Not by hanging in Risley Remand Centre when he was 19 after he complained of being repeatedly sexually assaulted.

Other news from north Wales is that a carer at the Heddfan Unit has been jailed for more than five years after appearing in Caernarfon Crown Court for having sex with a patient ‘young enough to be his daughter’. Not just once, but on a number of occasions. Neither did this sound like a Mills and Boon hospital romance – the carer was involved in a relationship with his ex-wife as well as another woman. The patient has stated that she now realises that she was exploited. Presumably Dr Peter Higson, the Chair of the Betsi Board, is now investigating complaints of staff sexually exploiting patients. That’s a new direction – Higson ignored complaints about Dafydd doing this for years when Higson was the manager of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. The carer concerned had worked at the Heddfan Unit since 2001.

In 2006 the Heddfan carer was convicted for ‘outraging public decency’ in a ‘flashing incident’, but the Health Board didn’t know and his employment continued. Can someone explain how his employers didn’t know about that? In 2006 the Betsi Board had not been created – the Heddfan Unit was still managed by the Welsh Gov’t, but by a previous NHS Trust. In 2006 Gangster Gibbons was Health Minister – Gangster Gibbons wrote to me at that time telling me that ‘this correspondence is closed’ when I told him that I had documentary evidence of serious criminal activity in the mental health services in north Wales. Gangster Gibbons knew as well as the rest of us that staff should have been regularly CRB checked to guard against this sort of event. So why didn’t that happen then Gibbons? Furthermore, I know that Martin Jones at the NW Wales NHS Trust wasn’t carrying out CRB checks on his staff either, two different moles told me. Until very recently Martin Jones was Director of the Workforce at the Betsi. Martin Jones’s wrongdoing was one matter about which Gangster Gibbons closed down correspondence with me. For more details on Gangster Gibbons and his deep and meaningful relationship with another fraudster of south Wales, Julian Tudor Hart, see post ‘The Human Stain’.

The sex fiend of the Heddfan Unit was not the only carer in north Wales in trouble. An ‘incompetent care worker’, Lee Woods, employed by Wrexham County Borough Council, has been struck off by a Social Care Wales fitness to practice committee, who concluded that he posed a risk to young people and could not be relied upon the deliver a service ‘to individuals’. The concerns were that Woods failed to carry out his boss’s instructions, which included failing to complete housing and welfare rights applications for clients and submitting inaccurate expense claims. Once more, I can only suppose that standards are improving. For years social workers – including senior social workers such as ‘team leader’ Keith Fearns – employed by Gwynedd Social Services flatly refused to give scores of people any ‘service’ at all. Those people did not know about the benefits to which they were entitled so they lived at sub-benefit level and had no chance of gaining accommodation unless they rented or purchased privately because to gain social housing, mental health patients in Gwynedd needed their application endorsed by the Arfon CMHT. The reason for their refusal to assist certain clients was always the same – that they had ‘upset people’. Translated that meant that they’d complained about Dafydd and the paedophiles.

I don’t know if the Arfon Team submitted fraudulent expense claims, but I’d imagine that they’d find that particular temptation hard to resist. They did used to sit in Bangor Morrison’s cafe every morning from 9-30 until 11-30 enjoying a cooked breakfast when they were supposed to be on duty down the road in their office. But then the team alcohol counsellor Tom Harney was an alcoholic who ran a pub on the north Wales coast. When the then CEO of the Betsi Mary Burrows kicked Harney out of his job for seriously neglecting his patients, Harney got a job with Dafydd’s charity CAIS. As an alcohol counsellor of course.

Members of the Arfon Team faced no action even as a result of their threats and harassment of patients until Mary Burrows launched an investigation into them some six years ago and they were subsequently all sacked for seriously neglecting clients. None of them were struck off. Keith Fearns, Julie Evans and Maggie Fookes simply set themselves up as therapists. They are still working.

The Social Care Council has only been in existence since 2016. Lee Woods had worked for WCBC since 2005. Until 2016, the body responsible for regulating Lee’s standards at work was the Care Council for Wales. There is no mention in the reports re Lee that his standards had slipped – according to WCBC he had always been hopeless, lied when he was caught out, refused to undertake training and could not be improved. The Care Council for Wales missed all that then. Who was the CEO of the Care Council for Wales throughout its entire existence? Step forward Rhian Huws Williams.

Rhian has been a paedophiles’ friend for 35 years now, as a result of her long career in social work in Wales, which began at UCNW back in the 1970s. Rhian spent some years as a training officer for mental health social work in Wales. Rhian has lived through it all – the deaths of witnesses, the police investigations, the Jillings Investigation and the Waterhouse Inquiry. She knew nuzzing. Just as she didn’t know about Lee Woods. Rhian was made a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards in 2014. She doesn’t write Cynghanedd or anything like that, so I presume that Rhian has got in there by being a mate of Dafydd’s or Robyn Lewis’s.

Teachers who are members of the NASUWT at Connah’s Quay High School have gone on strike on the grounds that they are ‘fearful’ of senior management. My post ‘I Warn You…’  describes the dreadful senior management of Holyhead School some 16 years ago – although the regime was in place for a few more years after that – by the Head Margaret Chantrell and her total fuckwit of a Deputy, Gerald Hewitson. The whole of north Wales knew how serious the problems were and the classroom teachers were being scapegoated. Most of the teachers at Holyhead were actually very good but they were constantly undermined by Chantrell and Hewitson. Chantrell and Hewitson did have one accomplice on the staff however – the vile Gill Dennis. Dennis volunteered to be a mentor for student teachers on placement from Bangor University and systematically tried to blow them all out of the water. According to Dennis, in the year in which I did teacher training (2000-01), none of the student teachers but one were sufficiently competent enough to qualify. Dennis came gunning for me as well, but I didn’t link her activities with Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends because before she even met me she tried to completely ruin the career of one student teacher who had been on placement at Holyhead School the term before me. Bangor University had to step in and protect all the student teachers whom Dennis tried to fail or force to withdraw from the course. I mentioned that there was one student whom Dennis did find acceptable – Dennis had such a high opinion of her that she told her to apply for a vacancy as a science teacher that was coming up and also told her that she would almost certainly be offered the job, so impressive was she. On the big day, this candidate was not offered the job. She never understood why. Gill Dennis later commented that she didn’t get the job because she wore a jumper for the interview rather than a blouse. (It wasn’t a Gyles Brandreth jumper – it was an upmarket lightweight jumper made of fine wool, which she wore with an equally upmarket suit.)

The irony was that Gill Dennis was very obviously rather unkempt and neglected herself. Her standard wear was nylon trousers with a plastic jacket, she was usually pretty grubby and unusually for someone in a professional job she had very bad teeth – they were well on the way to being blackened stumps. I’m not making these observations simply to kick Dennis in the chops – although she richly deserves it – but because I and another person noticed that those choppers of hers did resemble the sort of decaying teeth that long term amphetamine users often end up with…

On the day before I finished my placement at Holyhead, Gill Dennis told me that she’d had a bellyful of Holyhead School, she hated us, she didn’t care about us or the school and the only reason why she volunteered to be a mentor to the student teachers was to get a good reference from Gerald Hewitson in order to secure another job near Merseyside. Dennis didn’t even live in north Wales, she lived on the Wirral and drove to Holyhead every day.

Because Gill Dennis couldn’t actually point to anything that the trainee teachers had done wrong, she maintained that none of us should be allowed to qualify because we ‘lacked professionalism’.

Gerald Hewitson sexually harassed one of the trainee teachers whilst she was on placement at Holyhead School.

As Holyhead School finally imploded, Margaret Chantrell whined about the people of Holyhead in a media interview and complained that they were such a load of gits that they wouldn’t even support their ‘community school’. The school to which one of Chantrell’s prized members of staff commuted from her home in another country and couldn’t wait to escape.

If anyone knows the reason for Gill Dennis’s desire to destroy the careers of student teachers or whether her teeth had suffered because of amphetamine use, please let me know.

The ‘Daily Post’ has reported that raids conducted by the Merseyside Police across Merseyside, the Wirral and in Wrexham have resulted in the seizure of drugs and guns, including a machine gun.

Chris Lloyd of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team was interviewed by the media after the team were called out to rescue walkers who were not only alleged to be very ill-equipped but were also suspected of not being in need of rescuing but just fancied a lift back down the mountain. I know that such things do occasionally happen and when they do, Mr Lloyd and his colleagues get seriously pissed off. What was of interest was the identity of two local rent-a-gobs who also commented, neither of the rent-a-gobs being members of the Mountain Rescue team themselves.

The rent-a-gobs in question were the leader of Conwy County Council, Gareth Jones OBE and the Tory MP for Aberconwy, Guto Bebb. Bebb stated that people rescued by the Mountain Rescue team should have to fund their own rescue and Gareth Jones said that he shared Bebb’s sentiment, that no-one likes to see public money wasted, but that enforcing payment would be difficult.

Gareth Jones OBE has featured on this blog previously. He is the former Headmaster of Ysgol John Bright and in 1991 was a member of the Cartrefle Panel of Inquiry, which investigated the serious sexual assaults perpetrated on children in Cartrefle, a Clwyd children’s home. Every member of the Panel was someone who had previously concealed child abuse and one member was H.H. Ellis, the crooked County Secretary of Gwynedd County Council who had tried to frame and imprison me (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake…’).

Not that Gareth Jones needed to have sat on that panel to know what was happening to kids in care in north Wales. Gareth was born in 1939 in Blaenau Ffestiniog, went to Swansea University and then became a teacher and returned to north Wales. He couldn’t have missed that paedophile gang.

Gareth was the Plaid AM for Conway, 1999-03 and for Aberconwy, 2007-11. So Gareth sat in Cardiff Bay when the Waterhouse Report was published and said not a word. £13 million quid that Report cost Gareth – that will be rather more than was spent rescuing the dipsticks from the hills the other day. If you and your associates hadn’t have concealed the criminality of Dafydd et al, that £13 million could have been put to better use.

Gareth lives in Craig-y-Don, Llandudno. Dafydd holds clinics there and has a ‘nursing home’ there as well.

Before Gareth was elected for Aberconwy in 2007, he was Cabinet member of Conwy County Council for finance and resources, as well as leader of the Plaid Group. So Gareth was on that Council whilst Conwy County Council passed homes owned by Prestwood People Trafficking Ltd as being suitable, whilst clients were assaulted, injured and groomed for sex work (see post ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’).

In the 2007 Assembly election, Gareth campaigned on a Save Llandudno Hospital ticket, although the Labour Party denied that downgrading was planned for Llandudno Hospital. I know people who were treated at Llandudno Hospital and they spoke very highly of the care that they received. One is a good friend of mine and I have no reason to disbelieve her. However I also know that Prestwood clients were being taken to Llandudno Hospital with injuries and after suicide attempts and no questions were asked. They were only ever allowed to go for medical care in the company of Prestwood staff and then they were patched up and returned to Prestwood.

Gareth Jones was a member of the Llandudno Hospital Action Group and is a Trustee of St David’s Hospice. St David’s Hospice is run entirely by paedophiles’ friends, Alun Davies was the Chief Executive after he ran the Hergest Unit into the ground and now Trystan Pritchard is Chief Exec. Trystan is a former corrupt NHS manager who, along with Martin Jones, refused to investigate complaints of Ysbyty Gwynedd staff abusing patients when Trystan worked for the NW Wales NHS Trust. See post ‘The CEOs Of St David’s Hospice’.

Trystan is a Freemason. As I am fairly sure is Gareth Jones.

Gareth is also a Board member for Aberconwy Women’s Aid and a Patron of Tyddyn Bach, an HIV centre at Penmaenmawr.

Gareth’s political interests are social justice, the Welsh language and education. So that is why he ignored a paedophile ring that spilt over into the schools and who targeted Welsh speaking as well as English speaking kids.

Guto Bebb went really apeshit about those whom he alleges abuse the Mountain Rescue service. Guto stated that they ‘should be made to take responsibility, both moral and financial, for their actions’.

Guto hasn’t yet featured on this blog but he certainly needs to. Guto Bebb has been the Tory MP for Aberconwy since 2010. He’s been involved in a few controversies in recent years. In 2014 Guto became embroiled in a twitter spat with a constituent who has Aspergers and Guto told him that people with mental health problems should not ‘publicly comment’ no less. Then in 2017 Guto told a constituent who challenged his voting record that he was ‘talking out of his arsehole’. There was more trouble in 2017 as well – Guto was the subject of outrage after he hired his wife as a translator and office worker just before Parliament blocked the practice of MPs employing their relatives.

Guto was born in Wrexham in 1968. As Guto was growing up, the kids in the care homes just down the road from his birthplace were being battered and raped into oblivion. Not that many of them should have been allowed to publicly comment, because so many of them had mental illness diagnoses. They’d only have been talking out of their arseholes. Guto will have been delighted that so many of them didn’t ever comment, having been imprisoned or died so young.

Guto went to Ysgol Sir Hugh Owen, along with some of the kids who were being abused. But they were quietly ignored. Far better to involve oneself with the children of Dafydd Wigley who also went there.  Guto then studied history at Aberystwyth University, when it was run by the paedophiles’ friends (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Guto hasn’t always been a Tory. He used to be a Plaid activist and was Chairman of Caernarfon Plaid. Er – Guto, it was Plaid-dominated Gwynedd County Council with their HQ in Caernarfon who knew that their children’s homes were full of paedophiles but took no action wasn’t it?

One of my friends knew Guto. She went on a business course and Guto was doing some of the teaching. Guto told the class how hopeless the Welsh Assembly are at matters business. They probably are Guto, but nothing rivals the fuckwittery, corruption and nepotism re ‘business development’ that prevails at Gwynedd County Council.

I don’t know Guto but I think that he might know me. I was next to him shopping in Caernarfon Morrison’s once – he was pushing a trolley full of small children – and he was very icy towards me. I only knew who he was because I recognised his photo. Yes, Guto, that was me, that fucking cow who just would not shut up about Dafydd and the paedophiles and who even wrote books and academic articles about the abuse of mental health patients by mental health staff. I know that I shouldn’t be allowed to publicly comment but I’ve written well over 500 posts on this blog now…

Anyone interested in Welsh political history knows of Guto’s grandfather, Ambrose Bebb. Ambrose was one of the founders of Plaid, along with Saunders Lewis. Dafydd was a mate of Saunders Lewis and I bet that Dafydd was a mate of Ambrose Bebb as well. Ambrose Bebb also knew J.E. Daniel, the father of the corrupt judge Huw Daniel who was looking forward to imprisoning me in 2004 on the basis of the perjury of Angels from the Hergest Unit.

Ambrose went to Aberystwyth Univerrsity when an earlier generation of paedophiles’ friends ran the place and when it produced scores of law graduates who became corrupt lawyers and judges who concealed the crimes of Dafydd and the paedophiles. When Ambrose was a student at Aber he published an article in support of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland which was banned by the College authorities. Ambrose spent much of his life teaching at Coleg Normal, the teacher training college which trained scores of paedophiles’ friends.

Ambrose Bebb was one of the early members of Plaid who gave Plaid the tag of being a fascist – even a Nazi-supporting – party. Ambrose Bebb did not support the Nazis, he was one of a number of Plaid leaders who had links with French Catholic nationalist far-right groups.

I don’t agree with everything that your grandfather wrote Guto, but I would never have told him that he didn’t have the right to publicly comment. But then I’m not an offensive hypocrite of a paedophiles’ friend am I.

‘They should be made to take responsibility, both moral and financial, for their actions’. £13 fucking million on a rigged enquiry Guto. So that your associates didn’t go to prison.

The Mountain Rescue teams in north Wales get a great deal of good PR and I’m sure that for the most part they do a worthwhile job, but there are members past and present of the Mountain Rescue teams who could give police statements about certain matters. One member of the Ogwen team is Phil Benbow, who is a senior nurse at Ysbyty Gwynedd and for a long time was a senior nurse in the Hergest Unit. Phil Benbow did not abuse patients himself but he bloody well knew that it was happening. Phil was walking onto wards where patients had just been assaulted and had visible injuries. He was told how those injuries happened as well. Time to speak out Phil? Patients died up there. Not on your shifts, but you knew that place was crawling with dangerous violent Angels and that patients were not safe.

One abuser who was involved with Mountain Rescue in north Wales – but I don’t think that it was the Ogwen team – was dear old Stephen Gallagher (see post ‘Two Dangerous Very Dishonest Nurses’). A past leading light in the Ogwen team was the late Tony Jones, a lecturer at Bangor University, who was close friends with many corrupt officers in the North Wales Police and used to get his mates to arrest students that he didn’t like just for a laugh. An aspiring policeman also volunteered with the Ogwen team. He didn’t get into the police force – something was found on his record when he was 19 that caused the North Wales Police to turn his application down. He was very angry about it at the time, but the North Wales Police wouldn’t budge. So he joined the Mountain Rescue team and then became a paramedic! I was told that the past event that the police had objected to was a violent incident. So someone put him in a green jump suit and stuck him in the back of an ambulance instead.

Vaughan Gething has announced that the Welsh Gov’t is to outlaw smoking in the fresh air in the grounds of public buildings, including hospitals, because of the risk to people’s health from passive smoking. Sharing thousands of cubic meters of fresh air with someone puffing on a fag is not the same as a newborn sharing a box room with someone chain smoking High Tar No 6 or Woodbines Vaughan. Before you worry about first world problems, I suggest that you ask yourself what else might be going wrong in the mental health services of the Betsi after the Tawel Fan Scandal and now the imprisonment of the flasher who was employed as a carer for having sex with a patient.

Carwyn has made a speech at Wales’s annual TUC conference in Llandudno. Carwyn told a lot of lies about the NHS – it is of course excellent – and talked about other achievements of his that the Wales TUC might not have been that impressed with, because Carwyn isn’t Jeremy Corbyn. Not that the Wales TUC will be in a position to point the finger at anyone now that it has been made public that Edwina Hart – the former Chair of Wales TUC – when she was Minister for the Economy and Finance, dished out business support funding in return for sexual favours (see post ‘Criminals Are Getting Away With It’).

Lastly I am delighted to be able to report another breakthrough from CR UK, who seem to have discovered many earth-shattering new things since this blog provided details of the previous research frauds conducted by people funded by CR UK. The latest breakthrough has been made by a research team from Cardiff (where else?). We are told that a method has been found of completely destroying cancer cells in ovarian cancer whilst leaving healthy tissue untouched. Details of viruses which have been ‘trained’ to recognise cancer cells were provided, along with info about the everyday habits of viruses, accompanied by the obligatory diagrams of the double helix. (Which might have to stop because somebody has just popped up with a challenge to the double helix model.) The main problem with ovarian cancer is diagnosing it in the first place and the Cardiff team don’t seem to be addressing that. Although we were told that the ‘cure’ ‘could soon be a possibility’, I note that the experiments have been conducted on mice and the work has not yet reached clinical trials. Work on mice takes many years before it translates into interventions in the clinic. Furthermore, the attrition rate of those procedures is very high – the vast majority of new drugs etc fall at the many hurdles between ‘it’s worked on the mice and the mice haven’t died’ stage and the ‘safe and effective in humans, ready for the clinic’ stage. Cardiff are jumping the gun.

Is The Party Over Yet?

On 11 June 1986 Olivia Channon, the daughter of Paul Channon, Thatcher’s Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, was found dead in the rooms of Count Gottfried von Bismarck at Christ Church College, Oxford University. von Bismarck had thrown a post-exams drugs and drink binge the night before for his friends – Olivia had passed out unconscious on von Bismarck’s bed at approx 2-30 am. Her body was found five hours later, in a pool of her own vomit – close to Olivia’s body was a spoon and silver foil with traces of heroin on it. Some of the first newspaper reports about Olivia’s death stated that preliminary forensic tests had shown that she had died from a cardiac arrest after taking huge quantities of champagne, vodka and heroin, other reports stated that a preliminary post-mortem revealed that she had choked on her own vomit. The circumstances of Olivia’s death did not become any clearer over the following weeks or indeed months.

The other revellers – there were eight people at the party – all stated that they had left Olivia alone, crashed out on von Bismark’s bed, in the early hours whilst they went to other events. The police arrested and charged some of those at the party. Olivia’s friend Rosie Johnston- whom she had known from childhood – was charged with supplying Olivia with heroin. Rosie had purchased the drugs in London for Olivia. Rosie and Olivia shared a house in Oxford – Olivia owned the house, she was a member of the Guinness family and was in receipt of a generous trust fund. Unlike everyone else involved, Rosie wasn’t a student at Oxford University. She had actually been studying for a degree with London University, but had transferred to Manchester College – which was part of London University but located in Oxford – because she wanted to be near to her friends. Nicholas Vincent, who discovered Olivia’s body, was charged with the possession of amphetamines. Gottfried von Bismark was charged with possession. Paul Dunstan an ‘unemployed musician’ was charged with supplying heroin. Rosie’s boyfriend – Olivia’s cousin – Sebastian Guinness was charged with possession of cocaine.

After Olivia’s body was found the police began an investigation into the route by which drugs were being trafficked from London to serve the Oxford University market and stated that they were interested in one particular unnamed dealer based in London.

At Olivia’s inquest Nicholas Vincent admitted that he’d lied to the police. He had initially denied that he had been asleep on the bed beside Olivia when she died, but told the inquest that he ‘could not cope with the fact of having slept with Olivia beside me all night’. Vincent was not a undergrad like Olivia and Rosie – he was a post-grad who was working as a part-time tutor and had been giving extra tuition to Olivia. Vincent maintained that he had warned Olivia about smoking heroin.

After Olivia’s death, Vincent left the UK, severed all ties with his contemporaries at Oxford and was last heard of years ago teaching English in Gstaad in Switzerland.

Someone else left the UK after Olivia’s death as well – von Bismarck, although he claimed that he didn’t know that Olivia was using heroin. Gottfried left Oxford within hours – he was ‘recalled’ to the family seat in Germany by his father Prince Ferdinand and rapidly checked into a private clinic to be treated for alcoholism. Gottfried’s departure was so rapid that a family servant was dispatched to Oxford to pay his pub, restaurant and tailors bills. Gottfried subsequently completed his studies in Germany, although he did return to the UK, both to appear at Oxford Magistrates Court and some years later, to live and work. At Oxford Magistrates Court von Bismark was fined the grand total of £80 for the possession of cocaine. Gottfried will not have made a case to the magistrates of being on a low income. His great-great-grandfather was Prince Otto von Bismarck, the Prussian ‘Iron Chancellor’, his father was Prince Ferdinand von Bismarck and the family seat is a castle. The family also owns a good deal more than their castle. Gottfried’s younger sister Vanessa later became a PR agent in the US and his older brother Carl-Eduard became an MP in the German Bundestag.

Gottfried was defended by Robin Grey QC when he appeared before the Oxford Magistrates for the possession of drugs. Grey stated that Olivia’s death was ‘going to be a shadow’ over von Bismark’s head ‘probably for the rest of his life’.

Sebastian Guinness and Paul Dunstan were sentenced in Dec 1986 by Sir Philip Otton. Guinness was imprisoned for four months and Paul Dunstan was imprisoned for four years for supplying heroin to Olivia. Otton commented at the trial that rich privileged people cannot expect to receive lighter sentences and his sentencing would demonstrate this. Which is why the ‘unemployed musician’ received four years in jail and their heir to the Guinness fortune received four months. Whereas Count von Bismark got away with an £80 fine in the Magistrates Court. I haven’t come across many cases involving Sir Philip Otton – but I do know that he was the judge who rejected Mary Wynch’s first appeal. Otton was over-ruled by the Master of the Rolls (see post ‘ The Lawyers And Judges Involved In Mary Wynch’s Case’).

An additional twist to Olivia’s death emerged when three journalists found a three page torn up suicide note from Olivia addressed to Rosie in the dustbin of the house that the young women shared. There were references in the note to Olivia being depressed and distraught over her break up with a man to whom she referred as ‘Jeremy Hippy’. It transpired that Jeremy Hippy was Thomas Jeremy Barnes, a former Oxford student who ran a mobile disco in Verbier, Switzerland. After the existence of the suicide note became public, Paul Channon issued a statement through his lawyer maintaining that Olivia had written the note months ago, that she and Jeremy Hippy were reconciled and that he knew that she hadn’t committed suicide because if she had been planning to do that she would have contacted Channon to talk about her will. Obviously a warm and caring family the Channons. I can find no other references to Jeremy Hippy except in the context of the mention of his name in the suicide note, so presumably he kept a low profile in Switzerland with the mobile disco as he will not have needed to have been concerned with the writing of any will.

Rosie Johnston was dealt with rather more harshly than von Bismarck, but still didn’t suffer too much. She was sentenced to nine months imprisonment and served six months. She briefly saw the inside of Holloway but was then transferred to Bullwood Hall and East Sutton Park Open Prison. In 1989 Rosie wrote a prison memoir called ‘Inside Out’. Because by that time I had been subject to a number of attempts by the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales to frame me for serious offences, I took quite a big interest in matters concerning criminal justice and I read Rosie’s book. Rosie was quite laid back about prison – she noted that Holloway held a lot of seriously mentally ill women who spent their days injuring themselves and frequently succeeded in killing themselves despite being on the euphemistically named ‘hospital wing’. The hospital wing in Holloway was of course known as the muppet house because even the other prisoners noticed that the prisoners on that wing really were in a bad way and should not have been in a prison. Rosie wrote about hearing the muppets screaming in distress 24 hours a day and she also noticed how many women in Holloway were serving sentences for drugs offences, including overseas citizens who had been coerced into working as drug mules by pimps or gangsters and were serving very long sentences for importing drugs. Rosie described Bullwood Hall as being like a particularly awful girl’s boarding school, but because she had been to such an establishment herself she didn’t find it too unbearable.

Rosie mentioned in her book that she arrived at Holloway wearing no knickers because she forgot to put them on and that the other prisoners were puzzled as to why someone as posh as Rosie was so unkempt, or in their words ‘dirty’. Now as someone who has had to prepare myself for a possible prison sentence on a few occasions as a stream of Angels and Top Doctors have perjured themselves, I can testify that it is most unlikely that one would forget one’s undies in those circumstances. If you know that you may well be banged up for God knows how long with no opportunities to get your hands on the essentials, things like toothbrushes, undies etc do spring to mind. Unless of course you are someone with one hell of a drug problem and are barely compus mentis in court, although there was no suggestion of that in any media reports.

Rosie Johnston’s mother is a member of the publishing family the Chancellors. At the time of Olivia’s death Rosie’s uncle Alexander Chancellor was Deputy Editor of The Sunday Telegraph and had just spent several years as Editor of The Spectator. Both publications were very supportive of Thatcher’s Gov’t.

When her book was published Rosie Johnston indicated that she wanted to work in prison reform, but I note that did not happen.

Someone else’s name cropped up in connection with Olivia’s death who supported Paul Channon’s claims that Olivia didn’t kill herself – Viscount Charles Althorp aka Champagne Charlie, the Princess of Wales’s brother. Champagne Charlie maintained that he had phoned Olivia hours before her death and she was fine and happy.

In the wake of Olivia’s death there was many acres of newsprint dedicated to the hedonistic lifestyle being pursued by some Oxford students. One article I remember reading in I think the New Statesman had been written by a young journo who had mates at Oxford. This journo had been reassured that although a great deal of drinking and drug taking was happening, one just had to ensure that one’s mates put one’s body in the appropriate position to prevent one choking on one’s vomit if one passed out. A medical student called Hilary was good enough to tell the New Statesman exactly what needed to be done in order to avoid death when rat arsed. Some press articles were rude enough to suggest that Oxford was stuffed full of rich drug taking wasters from dysfunctional families who had bagged their places through their connections rather than their ability.

Gottfried at least was certainly a very rich man with a hectic lifestyle. He drank very heavily throughout the night and kept himself awake during the day by using amphetamines. He was a member of the Piers Gaveston Society, which had originally been established as a gays only club. Members had an interest in rubber and whips and were required to camp it up. Gottfried took his membership seriously – he regularly appeared in fishnet stockings or lederhosen and lipstick. Although von Bismarck was a member of the Bullingdon Club as well and spent many happy hours smashing up restaurants, he found life in Oxford somewhat dull and spent much time in London doing some rather more serious partying. Gottfried did host some memorable bashes in Oxford though. At one Bavarian themed party he hung two severed pigs heads over the tables to enable the pigs blood to drip onto the food. Sebastian Shakespeare – who is now a journalist – was a good mate of Gottfried’s and was in attendance on that occasion.

Other friends of von Bismarck’s included Champagne Charlie, Lady Antonia Fraser’s son Damien and Princess Charlotte of Luxembourg. Fellow members of the Bullingdon Club included Darius Guppy – who was also in the Piers Gaveston Society. Guppy was best man at Champagne Charlie’s first wedding and Champagne Charlie was best man at Guppy’s nuptials.

Darius Guppy is of course best known for a 1993 insurance fraud which involved him and his business partner Benedict Marsh faking a jewellry robbery and then claiming £1.8 million from the insurers. In Feb 1993 Guppy was sentenced to five years imprisonment for conspiracy involving fraud, robbery and false accounting. In 1993 Guppy also pleaded guilty to three separate charges concerning illegal VAT claims on gold bullion smuggled into India between Oct 1989-July 1990. Since his conviction Guppy has written some bizarre pompous articles explaining how trying to swindle £1.8 million out of someone else was his revenge on Lloyds of London for their alleged wrongdoing in relation to his family. His mates like Boris Johnson – who was at Eton and then Oxford with Guppy and was a fellow member of the Bullingdon Club – have banged on about Guppy being a man of such honour that he had to demand satisfaction. Do you know Boris, a lot of people have done some very nasty things to me, but I’ve never staged an armed robbery in order to extract nearly two million quid out of them. I’ve ended up writing this blog instead.

Guppy obviously felt that he could rely on Boris to defend his corner because in 1990 when Boris was working as a journalist on the Daily Telegraph, Boris received a phone call asking him if he could provide the home address of News of the World journalist Stuart Collier, who was investigating Guppy – Guppy wanted to have Collier beaten up. A tape of the conversation was leaked to the press in 1995.

Another person who was in the Bullingdon Club with this lot was someone called David Cameron. This bunch of indulged dickwits really were the heirs to Thatcher. Before the unfortunate business of Olivia Channon, the Daily Mail and similar outlets used to constantly run features on Champagne Charlie et al drooling over how grand and important their parents were. I remember reading one article about ‘the Cabinet Ministers beautiful daughters’ – one of the beautiful daughters, Mary Parkinson, fruit of Cecil’s loins, had rather let the side down by getting involved in drugs and prostitution – the principal star of this feature was one Annabel Heseltine, who I think was at Durham rather than Oxford. Anyway Annabel’s mates were interviewed explaining that ‘she was always falling out of her clothes’ – a bit like Cecil then – and getting plastered on champers. Many years later, but I think before Cameron became PM, old father Heseltine was waxing lyrical in a broadsheet about the fine new generation of Tories that had been bred when he revealed that he had tripped over David Cameron in a heap of bodies after Annabel had held a piss up. And do you know, Heseltine was most impwessed when he actually spoke to Dave and he wealised that he was looking at a future Pwime Minister.

Dave – can you ask your mates how Olivia died? Furthermore, what with your mother sitting on the Oxford Magistrates bench, can you perhaps explain how the fuck Count von Bismarck got away with an £80 fine when a corpse full of heroin was discovered in his room? I heard you on the radio that time when you became over excited and starting shouting about how what pumps you up is people taking a chance and ‘doing the right thing’. Loading your mates up with Class A drugs, fleeing when they die and telling a pack of lies to the police isn’t really doing the right thing is it Dave? Perhaps you could include a chapter about it all in the memoirs that you’re writing in your shepherd’s hut.

Although Robin Grey QC had explained to the Oxford Magistrates – perhaps even to Dave’s mum herself – how Olivia’s death would be forever with von Bismarck, it didn’t hold the Count back for long. After completing his studies in Germany, von Bismarck spent some time in Los Angeles and then worked as an executive for Kevin Maxwell’s company Telemonde. von Bismarck’s role was to raise capital from the stockmarket – unfortunately Telemonde collapsed in 2002 with debts of £105 million. von Bismarck then spent some time working in London promoting holidays in Uzbekistan. von Bismarck was promoting the delights of the Uzbek regime to tourists just after Jack Straw, in his capacity as Home Secretary, had ordered the withdrawal and interrogation of the UK ambassador to Uzbekistan, Craig Murray. What had Craig Murray done to upset Jack Straw? Murray had raised concerns over human rights abuses in Uzbekistan – human rights abuses which included boiling people alive. After advertising the delights of Uzbekistan, von Bismarck co-founded AIM Partners, a London-based investment firm.

In August 2006 someone else died at a party hosted by von Bismarck – Anthony Casey fell 60 feet from the roof terrace of von Bismarck’s Chelsea flat and died of multiple injuries. von Bismarck was not arrested and the police did not find any drugs at the flat. The police might not have found any drugs in the flat but there were a lot of drugs in Mr Casey. The subsequent coroners report stated that there was no alcohol in Mr Casey’s blood but a significant amount of cocaine. The coroner told the Guardian that a great deal of ‘sexual paraphernalia’ had been discovered in the flat, including a variety of sex toys, lubricants and a butane gas cannister. There was also a box containing dozens of syringes. The coroner explained that there had been a ‘gay orgy’ taking place in the flat in the early hours of the morning, but all the action was between ‘consenting males in private’. As with Olivia’s death, there were a few things that weren’t ever explained – such as how Mr Casey ended up on the roof, let alone falling off it. There was a suggestion that he was ‘feeling unwell’ at the orgy so von Bismarck gave him the keys to the roof terrace.

von Bismarck left the UK after this death as well.

So who was the coroner who asked so few questions about an orgy which resulted in someone’s death, someone who was full of drugs himself but had taken part in an orgy in a flat in which no drugs had been found, although plenty of syringes with which to take drugs were present? It was none other than this blog’s friend Dr Paul Knapman, who was the coroner for Westminster and until he retired in 2011 could be relied upon to provide unbelievable explanations about the most suspicious or socially embarrassing deaths. Knapman – who is an alumnus of St George’s Hospital Medical School – conducted the inquests of Lord Lucan’s nanny Sandra Rivett, of Georgi Markov, of Roberto Calvi and of Mark Saunders the barrister shot dead by the police. Knapman was involved with the inquests of Diana and Dodi. He also handled the Marchioness Disaster and the Clapham Rail Disaster. For more details on Knapman see post ‘A Future Leader Of The Labour Party’.

In March 2007 the Daily Mail ran an article in which it claimed that Rosie Johnston was speaking ‘for the first time’ since Olivia’s death. Rosie did quite a bit of speaking in her book nearly 20 years previously, but I think that the Mail were trying to flag up that now Rosie was speaking about Olivia’s death, something that she had been rather reluctant to do before – but then none of the people who hadn’t been at the flat when Olivia died and who didn’t know that she was taking heroin, even Nicholas Vincent who had been lying next to her on the bed whilst she took heroin and then died, had been prepared to speak about Olivia’s death. Rosie stated that she hadn’t spoken about Olivia’s death ‘simply out of respect for her family’ – previously Rosie had said that she doesn’t ‘discuss the events of that night or what led up to it because it’s just not my place to’. No, Rosie’s place was to supply the drugs and then tell the police that she wasn’t on the scene when Olivia died.

The Mail explained that after Rosie came out of prison she ‘worked in a Bed and Breakfast in Devon’. Another source tells us that Rosie owned that Bed and Breakfast. Rosie realised that her life was on the up again when she landed a job as company manager for an opera festival in Italy. She ‘started off cleaning loos and organising washing-up rotas, then I moved into directing’. Rosie found herself directing successful opera productions in Oxford, Holland Park and in Hong Kong. As you do when you’ve been employed to clean the bogs.

In 1994 Rosie married, moved to New York and then lived in New Mexico – she had her own radio show and raised money for charidee. In 2002 tragedy hit Rosie – her husband died of heart failure at the age of 40. Which is quite unusual – unless the person concerned has put themselves at risk by ooh, let’s say amphetamine use… After her husband died, Rosie realised that she was an alcoholic, so she checked into an establishment called Cottonwood in Arizona, whose previous guests have included Ronnie Wood, Kate Moss and Daniella Westbrook. Rosie now realises that she has ‘an allergy’ to alcohol because every time she drank she used to end up in trouble. That particular allergy used to be known as ‘being drunk and disorderly’.

Rosie told the Mail that Bullwood Hall prison was Hell – ‘the atmosphere…was so tense and violent that towards the end of my time there I didn’t go out of my cell’. Now that is not what she said in her book – and I’m fairly certain that in her book Rosie described Bullwood Hall as having dormitories not cells.

Fortunately the Daily Mail was able to give us the good news that Rosie has now been In Rehab and had ‘finally confronted what happened’ re Olivia in therapy sessions. So as well as those people who fled the country, there’s a therapist somewhere who knows how Olivia died…Rosie told the Mail that she thought it was extraordinary that newspapers printed articles about her being on the fringes of high society and she stressed that they didn’t all take heroin – in fact Rosie and her friends just went to wine bars, they couldn’t afford anything else. Not on their trust funds.

Rosie went to school with Lady Helen Taylor, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Olivia was at the same school, the Channons and the Kents were two families who were very close. Lady Helen Taylor experienced her own sad loss four years after Olivia’s death – her friend Henry Tennant died from AIDS at the age of 29. Before Henry died, he let on that he remembered Olivia smoking heroin at the family home in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Olivia might well have smoked heroin at the family’s other homes as well – they also owned a country mansion in Essex and two villas in Mustique, so there was quite a bit of choice as to where she smoked her heroin . Henry was the son of Colin Tennant, Lord Glenconner, who was a mate of Princess Margaret. The Channons were also mates of Princess Margaret. The Tennants, the Channons, Princess Margaret and Roddy Llewleyn used to have a great time on Mustique at Colin Tennant’s parties, along with David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Those parties may well have been spiced up by supplies from Dr Ann and Peter Dally, Royal physicians and dealers to the stars (please see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’). Lady Helen Taylor observed that it was sad when so many of your friends and colleagues had died from AIDS. Henry’s older brother Charles died before his time as well – Charles was a heroin addict who succumbed to hepatitis. Charles Tennant hit the headlines years ago when he flogged a photo of Princess Margaret at a party in fancy dress to raise money for drugs.

Having been in rehab, Rosie had now found gainful employment, although it was only bringing in about £800/month – in 2007 – so she was a bit miffed about that. Rosie was running workshops about the dangers of drugs and alcohol for schools and prisons. She was working with an organisation called Re-Cover, a free service to find people rehab places. It’s just as well that I don’t need one because I don’t think that I could afford Rosie’s free service – she explained to the Mail that rehab isn’t as expensive as people think, she could find a place for someone in South Africa providing three months of ‘care’ for £4k.

As part of her service Rosie doesn’t advise people not to take drugs because she says that they’re going to do that anyway, she gives info about the effects of drugs and tries to explain how the law works. Presumably Rosie’s advice includes the best way to get yourself off manslaughter charges when when one of your customers dies. As part of her work with Re-Cover Rosie was undertaking a course in drug and alcohol counselling.

If Rosie fancies slumming it in north Wales rather than in south west London, I’m sure that CAIS would be delighted to have her as a peer guide, she’s just what Dafydd and Lucille are looking for.

Rosie was running some of her workshops with a company called Richardson Calder. I can find no trace of Re-Cover or Richardson Calder on the web, but I suspect that Rosie’s aspirations to educate the UK on the matter of drugs and alcohol may have hit a problem. The fall-out from Anthony Casey’s death must have presented quite a hill to climb, but a few weeks after the Mail published their article about Rosie and her drug awareness work, Rosie’s old mate von Bismarck found himself headline news again.

von Bismarck was found dead on 2 July 2007, in his almost empty flat in Chelsea, which by then was in the process of being sold for approx £5 million. von Bismarck was 44 years old. Sebastien Lucas, the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem, stated that von Bismarck had injected cocaine on an hourly basis during the day before his death and that his body contained the highest level of cocaine that Lucas had ever encountered, as well as morphine. von Bismarck had liver damage, hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV. The cause of death was given as a heroin overdose.

As well as inheriting a great deal of money, Paul Channon inherited a seat in the Commons. He was MP for Southend West, 1959-97, until he received a peerage. His father Sir Henry ‘Chips’ Channon had held the seat before him and before Chips, Chips’s mother-in-law Gwendolen Guinness, Countess of Iveagh was the sitting MP. Gwendoline succeeded the seat after her husband Rupert Guinness, who had been the MP, had to stand down when he became the 2nd Earl of Iveagh. It was such a given that a member of the Guinness dynasty would hold the seat that when Chips pegged out, Paul Channon put himself forward for the nomination although he was only 23 years old and was still an undergrad at Oxford. Paul won the nomination despite 129 other applications and in the face of a campaign run by Lord Beaverbrook in the Daily Express who was outraged at such nepotism. After Channon was selected as the candidate his grandmother Lady Iveagh congratulated the voters on ‘backing a colt when you knew the stable he was trained in’.

I’m not sure that I’d have chosen a colt from that particular breeder. Chips Channon is remembered as a ‘diarist’ – whilst Chips’s diaries are famous, his nearest and dearest censored them before publication and never dared reveal what was in the unpublished bits. Although Chips did marry and produce a foal, as well as enjoying alcohol laced with drugs Chips also enjoyed many gay relationships. One of his partners was the playwright Terence Rattigan and Paul Channon’s mother, Lady Honour Guinness, left Chips because of his relationship with a male landscape designer. Biographies of Channon rather unfairly make reference to his mother ‘running away with a Czech airman’ without explaining why a Czech airman was a preferable option to Chips. There was much speculation that Chips also had a relationship with his closest friend Prince Paul of Yugoslavia – whom it is believed that he named his son after – and with the Duke of Kent.

Paul Channon mixed with high society from birth. When he was a baby his nanny used to take him for a walk in the park in his pram with her friend, the nanny of the Duke of Kent and her charge, the future Duke of Kent. Channon remained a lifelong friend of the Duke of Kent.

Chips was friends with Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson and Edward gave Channon a toy panda in the run up to the abdication. During WWII Channon was evacuated to the home of the Astors in New York where he became acquainted with their neighbour President Roosevelt.

Channon went to Eton and for his national service joined the Royal Horse Guards, with whom he served in Cyprus. Among his duties there was escorting Prince Philip’s nieces. Channon then went to Christ Church, Oxford where he was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association. Channon left university to take up his seat in Parliament. He served under five Tory leaders – Macmillan, Douglas Home, Heath, Thatcher and Major. He was PPS to R.A. Butler, 1961-64, whilst Butler was Home Secretary, First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary. Chips had also been Butler’s PPS – Channon was really chuffed that not only had he inherited the dosh, the family mansion, the Parliamentary seat, but he’d even inherited the job of Butler’s PPS. He commented that it was ‘his life’s dream’.

Channon was a Heathite and in 1967 Heath appointed him spokesman for the Arts. Channon occupied junior Ministerial roles between 1970-74, including Minister of State for N Ireland for six months in 1972. This was whilst Willie Whitelaw was Secretary of State for N Ireland and on 7 July 1972, Channon and Willie met IRA leader Sean Mac Stiofain and other Republicans at Channon’s house in Cheyne Walk. (I know that Thatcher kept maintaining that the Tories didn’t talk to terrorists and that only Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell met IRA leaders, but she was lying.) The talks with the IRA weren’t much of a success – two weeks later the IRA bombed Belfast on Bloody Friday.

Whilst he was a junior Minister at the Department of the Environment Channon installed a tiger skin sofa in his office.

In Feb 1974 Channon joined Heath’s Shadow Cabinet but Thatcher kicked him out again when she became leader of the Tory Party in Feb 1975. Thatch was alleged to have seriously disliked Channon and told Reginald Maudling that ‘there will be no room in my government for that millionaire’. She ended up having to break that particular vow.

In 1979 Channon was appointed Deputy Head of the Civil Service Department – he became Head in 1980 when his boss Lord Soames took up the post of Governor of Rhodesia. Channon was made a member of the Privy Council in 1980 as well.

In 1981 Channon was appointed Minister for the Arts, succeeding Norman St John Stevas. Channon took the call from No 10 offering him the job at one of his villas on Mustique. Channon really loved opera, so he managed to increase the spending on opera whilst he was Arts Minister. After the General Election of 1983 he was appointed Minister for Trade – Cecil Parkinson’s resignation after Sara Keays conveniently announced her pregnancy in the middle of the Tory Party conference resulting in maximum embarrassment for the Tories resulted in that millionaire becoming acting Secretary of State. Tebbit was appointed Secretary of State over Channon’s head, but then Tebbit had to step aside as a result of needing surgery, so that millionaire became acting Secretary of State again. On 24 Jan 1986 that millionaire became the President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for Trade and Industry after yet another resignation – this time of Leon Brittan, over the Westland affair. Which was certainly ironic because Leon Brittan only resigned over that to save Thatcher’s skin after she’d misled the Cabinet and no-one wanted to give Heseltine ammunition.

While Channon was at the DTI the scandal involving Guinness’s take-over of Distillers blew up. Guinness had been involved in fraudulent practice by inflating the worth of their shares and an investigation was undertaken by the DTI. Obviously Channon, being a man of integrity, could not be part of that investigation, it would have been a conflict of interest. So Michael Howard led the investigation. The Michael Howard who less than ten years later completely screwed Mary Wynch over, leaving her ruined after she had dared win a legal case against Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, Clwyd Health Authority and the Home Office, after she had been unlawfully arrested, imprisoned and fleeced of her inheritance by Dafydd.

Paul Channon was a Director of Guinness so he will have known something about the fraudulent practices which Howard investigated.

Other diplomatic incidents whilst Channon was at the DTI were the proposals by the Gov’t that British Leyland should be sold to General Motors and that Austin Rover should be sold to Ford. Channon stopped both sales on the grounds that it would be political suicide for the Tories if they went ahead. However, whilst Channon was in post Leyland Trucks were merged with DAF Holland.

Channon was involved in the arms to Iraq scandal whilst he was at the DTI. Why some years later were Blair et al so certain that Saddam was in possession of WMD? Because Channon and Alan Clarke ensured that he was sold the components that were needed to build them.

On 13 June 1987 Channon became Secretary of State for Transport. Whilst he was in that position: the Zeebrugge Ferry tragedy occurred; the Kings Cross Fire happened which resulted in 31 deaths; there were 35 deaths from the three train crash at Clapham Junction; 270 people were killed when a bomb exploded on the Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie; 44 people were killed when the British Midland plane crashed onto the M1 at Kegworth.

The cause of the fire at King’s Cross was never identified but it was admitted that there were long-standing serious health and safety failures and a managerial vacuum. The British Government received a bomb warning just before Lockerbie but didn’t make the information public for some two weeks and Channon went on holiday to Mustique two days after the Lockerbie disaster anyway.

Thatch sacked Channon as Transport Secretary in July 1989. Paul Foot wrote an interesting account of what was thought to have led to Channon’s sacking in the London Review of Books in 1994. He stated that in mid-March 1989, three months after Lockerbie, George Bush rang Thatcher to warn her to ‘cool it’ on the subject. It seems that on the same day, possibly a few hours before Bush’s call, Channon was a guest of five prominent political correspondents at the Garrick. It was agreed that anything said over lunch would be kept between them and not made public. Channon announced that Dumfries and Galloway police had conducted a major investigation into Lockerbie, had found those responsible and that arrests were imminent. At least one journo broke ranks and made the info public. Channon subsequently denied being the source of the leak. The Mirror called him a liar on its front page. Channon did not sue or complain. A few months later he was quietly sacked – and was replaced by the rehabilitated Cecil Parkinson. It was felt that Thatcher couldn’t publicly blame Channon for the leak because the main problem with it was that it coincided with her instructions from Washington.

Days after Parkinson took over at Transport he had the Marchioness Disaster to deal with.

Channon did not hold another Ministerial post. He wanted to be Speaker – of course he did, three previous members of his family had been Speaker, but he didn’t pull that one off.

After he returned to the backbenches, the man whose family business had been investigated for fraud Chaired the Commons Finance and Services Select Committee and for an encore someone let him Chair the Transport Select Committee. Probably because his ancestors had.

The Torygraph’s obituary of Channon observed that he had a ‘sense of fun’ and could speak backwards and used to ask his staff to speak in foreign accents. It must have been like an episode of ‘It Ain’t Half Racist Mum’ in the DTI. In fact Channon had such a sense of fun that he backed Thatcher in refusing to extend sanctions against South Africa. It was also observed that Olivia’s death had been particularly painful for him because it had happened at Christ Church, his old college – just to make it even worse, Chips went to Christ Church as well. Channon’s ‘love of old buildings’ had caused him in 1962 to promote legislation to ’empower’ local authorities to give grants for the upkeep of historic houses. Channon owned two such houses himself.

Channon was proud of his record on road building whilst at the Dept of Transport. He built new motorways and widened others. When he discovered that a new piece of motorway was planned to pass near to his country house in Essex, Channon and his wife Ingrid – another member of the Guinness family herself who had previously been married to Channon’s cousin Jonathan Guinness, there was a very small gene pool in that stable of which Channon’s granny was so proud – held a garden party to raise funds to campaign against the building of the motorway.

John Biffen’s obituary of Channon observed cryptically that ‘his ministerial duties were not particularly enjoyable, he bore them with good nature…great sadness struck him soon after leaving the Commons, such that he was unable to demonstrate his measured approach to politics as an active member of the Lords’. I don’t why Channon tolerated those ministerial duties, it wasn’t as if he needed the salary – in 1990 his share in Guinness alone was worth £184 million.

After finding out about Channon’s love of opera and how his daughter’s dealer found a new career for herself as an opera director, my ears pricked up this morning when I heard George Osborne being interviewed on Radio 4. George was talking about his love of opera. He explained that politicians are frightened to say that they like opera lest they are thought to be elitist, but he really loves it. Is he perhaps angling for business for Rosie? George mentioned that when he was at university the culture was very laddish and one had to state an interest in football. No George, you were at Oxford with Dave and the gang – no-one gave a bugger about football, that was for the oiks, it was huge quantities of Class A drugs that were in vogue with your friends.

George’s brother Adam likes Class A drugs. Adam was a Top Doctor – he trained with the best of course at Tommy’s. Not only was Adam Osborne a Top Doctor but he was a psychiatrist. So it was quite understandable that the GMC didn’t strike him off after he was caught breaching prescribing rules whilst prescribing drugs to a prostitute. Well the patient was a prostitute and Adam was a Top Doctor, he couldn’t possibly have been to blame for the misunderstanding. Some two or three years ago Adam was up in front of the GMC again. For threatening a patient with whom he had been having sex. I think illicit drugs were involved once more as well. Not only did Adam threaten the patient whom he had been shagging, but Adam’s wife – who was also a Top Doctor – threatened the patient as well. They both told her to keep quiet about Adam having sex with her. Whilst he was having sex with this patient, Adam told her how much he and his wife enjoy threesomes. The GMC did actually manage to strike Adam off after that. Although the last that I read they hadn’t taken any action against his wife. So if anyone wants to get their paws on controlled drugs, have a threesome with two Top Doctors and end up being threatened by them, the lady doctor Mrs Osborne is the one to book an appointment with.

The Daily Telegraph didn’t print a word about the activities of the Drs Osborne, although the Daily Mail went to town on it.

The Osbornes are obviously a very understanding bunch when it comes to Top Doctors abusing their positions. Whilst George was Chancellor, CAIS were given more than a million quid from the LIBOR fund after misrepresenting themselves and telling a load of porkies (see post ‘George Osborne Enters The Picture’).

In this morning’s radio interview, not only did George stress that he was still very good mates with Dave, the son of that very liberal Oxford Magistrate, but he hinted at a  political comeback. He mentioned that people are discussing who will succeed Theresa as PM – Theresa, he can smell blood…

To Raise Winds For The Destruction Of Ships…

I mentioned in my post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – The Scottish Play’ that two of my friends were at Stirling University with Jack McConnell, who later became First Minister of Scotland. Thee was someone else at Stirling with my friends who also became a big figure in Scottish politics  – Tommy Sheridan.

Tommy Sheridan joined Militant in about 1983 whilst at Stirling University and became Scotland’s highest profile member of Militant. He was expelled from the Labour Party in 1989 and formed Scottish Militant Labour. By 1993 Scottish Militant Labour had six Councillors in Glasgow, including Tommy Sheridan. In 1996 Sheridan and others formed the Scottish Socialist Alliance which in 1998 evolved into the Scottish Socialist Party. In 1999 Tommy Sheridan was elected to the Scottish Parliament as a Glasgow MSP and was re-elected in 2003.

Tommy Sheridan had a cult following – he led a campaign against the Community Charge in Scotland, was active in the protests at the Faslane Naval Base where the nuclear fleet is held and he went to prison in the course of his activism. Tommy Sheridan was remarkably effective and acquired some powerful enemies. He was really hated by everyone on the right but also by huge swathes of those on the left as well. Obviously Sheridan was loathed and feared by the Scottish (and the rest of the) Labour Party, but he also had enemies within the hard left as a result of factionalism and infighting.

Sheridan is undoubtedly a very tough politician, but he came unstuck as a result of a bizarre series of almost unfathomable events after he took on Rupert Murdoch and the News of the World.

In July 2006 Tommy Sheridan sued the News of the World at the Court of Session in Edinburgh for defamation after they published allegations that he frequented a swingers club in Manchester – Cupid’s – where they alleged that he partook of champagne, cocaine and group sex. In Aug 2006 Tommy won the case and was awarded £200k in damages – which is when his problems really began.

The News of the World immediately stated that it would appeal.

Two days after Sheridan won his case a letter was published in the Scottish Socialist Voice signed by six leading members of the SSP (Scottish Socialist Party) alleging that Tommy Sheridan had admitted at an SSP Executive Committee meeting to attending Cupids.

There was some indications that Sheridan was going to be in for a rough ride anyway when the day after his victory over Murdoch the Daily Mail published a florid article with a reference in the headline to ‘ranting Sheridan’.

Allegations and counter-allegations flew. People began emerging from the woodwork claiming that Tommy Sheridan had perjured himself during the trial – his wife Gail, who hosted a radio show, came under fierce attack from the media and her image as a loyal wife was questioned. There was much hostility towards Sheridan because of his cross-examination of one woman, Kristine Trolle, at the News of the World defamation trial.  Trolle had claimed that she had actually gone to Cupid’s in the company of Sheridan.

Sheridan and his supporters were subsequently to claim that he was under massive attack from News International as pay-back for daring to win a case against Murdoch.

It was clear that people had been prepared to lie on oath in the wake of a meeting of the Executive Committee of the SSP on 9 Nov 2004. Sheridan stepped down as convenor of the SSP after this meeting but his resignation was steeped in controversy. It transpired that the SSP’s Executive Committee had forced Sheridan to resign. Stories had appeared in the media about a then unnamed MSP – Sheridan confirmed at the meeting that the stories were about him and stated that he would take legal action against the newspaper concerned. After Sheridan resigned, the News of the World named him as the MSP in the stories.

There are differing accounts of what happened at the Executive Committee meeting on 9 Nov 2004. Eleven members at the meeting stated that Sheridan admitted at the meeting that he had visited Cupid’s. Three other members of the Executive Committee maintained that he had made no such admission.

What is agreed was that Sheridan later had a row with the SSP and called them ‘scabs’ because they would not support him in his proposed action against Murdoch.

The minutes of the 9 Nov 2004 meeting contained a record of Sheridan admitting that he had attended Cupid’s. In 2006 the News of the World subpoenaed the SSP to force them to hand over the minutes. Alan McCombes of the SSP refused to hand them over and in May 2006 was imprisoned by judge Lady Anne Smith. Other members of the SSP then handed the minutes over in order to have McCombes released from prison. Sheridan claimed that the minutes weren’t accurate.

At the SSP Conference in March 2006, Sheridan had been elected as the Party Co-Chair. However he left the SSP in August 2006 declaring that the ‘mother of all stitch ups’ had occurred, involving the leadership of the SSP, MI5 and News International. In Sept 2006 Sheridan launched another party, Solidarity, with MSP Rosemary Byrne, his former colleague from the SSP. Byrne had been one of those who claimed that Sheridan did not admit to attending Cupids at the Executive Committee meeting on 9 Nov 2004.

In Aug 2006 the Lothian and Borders Police had received two complaints of perjury – one from the former Conservative MSP Brian Monteith and another allegedly from the SSP’s minutes secretary. The News of the World’s appeal against the damages awarded to Sheridan was postponed until the proscurator fiscal announced the outcome of the perjury probe.

In Oct 2006 the Lothian and Borders Police started a criminal investigation. In the same month the BBC reported that the Grampian Police were investigating a death threat that had been sent by post to one of the witnesses who had appeared at the News of the World trial.

The News of the World also pitched in during Oct 2006. They published a video recording which they claimed was Tommy Sheridan admitting that he had visited Cupid’s. The recording had been made by SSP member George McNeillage using a hidden camera in his home after he had invited Sheridan there.  Tommy Sheridan could not be clearly seen on the tape at any point and the News of the World was unable to produce any images of his face. Sheridan maintained that the video was a fake and that the recording of his voice had been spliced with clips of someone else. News of the World produced four ‘experts’ who maintained that the voice was that of Tommy Sheridan alone. In an interview with the BBC, forensic speech specialist Peter French emphasised that it can never be conclusively said that such a recording can identify someone and that such material should never be used to bring a criminal trial.

In March 2007 the Lothian and Borders Police examined a bugging device found in Sheridan’s car and stated that it was ‘not the kind used by the British security services’.

Tommy Sheridan believed that MI5, somebody in the SSP and Murdoch had conspired in order to undermine his campaign for an independent socialist Scotland.

In May 2007 staff of Cupid’s told the police that they had been bribed not to co-operate with the inquiry.

In Dec 2007 Sheridan was charged with perjury along with six of his relatives and colleagues. Interestingly in the end the only person who was actually put on trial was Tommy Sheridan himself – the charges against everyone else melted away, although the charges against Gail Sheridan weren’t withdrawn until Tommy’s trial at the High Court in Glasgow in Oct 2010.

In Dec 2010 Tommy Sheridan was convicted of perjury and was sentenced to three years imprisonment. Tommy Sheridan left prison in Jan 2012 under the automatic early release scheme. In June 2016 he resigned as co-convenor of Solidarity to dedicate his time to fighting Murdoch, whom Sheridan claims framed him.

I followed the Tommy Sheridan case in the press at the time. Sheridan won his defamation case against Murdoch before the scandal involving phone hacking and serious criminality on the part of News International occurred. What I remembered after the allegations that Sheridan had perjured himself emerged was the acres of newsprint from right across the political spectrum baying for Sheridan’s blood. Sheridan had no support from any corner in the mainstream media – even the dear old Guardian put the boot in. But they would – the Guardian is not as radical as it likes to think that it is.

No-one seemed to be taking one major factor into account as the allegations that Sheridan was Satan incarnate flew – Sheridan had taken on MURDOCH. No-one dared take on Murdoch – the first thing that Blair did when he put his plans for electoral success into action was to make friends with Murdoch. It was common knowledge that Murdoch’s right hand woman Rebekah Wade/Brooks felt able to summon Gov’t Ministers, spout simplistic rubbish in their direction and expect to see her words translated into Gov’t policy. It was clear that no-one was safe from Rebekah and Murdoch long before the phone hacking scandal became public. Sara Payne, the mother of Sarah Payne, a little girl who was murdered by a paedophile in 2000, was befriended by Rebekah and the murder of Sara formed the basis of a News of the World ‘campaign’ concerning public access to registers of paedophiles locations, Sarah’s Law. As a gesture of friendship Rebekah gave Sara Payne a telephone on which she could ring Rebekah for a bit of support because caring sharing Rebekah knew what a bad time Sara Payne was having. There is much evidence that Sara Payne was led by the nose by Rebekah. I seem to remember reading in Private Eye that as the questions about the conduct of News International began gathering steam, Sara was reminded by Rebekah of how much the News of the World had ‘helped’ her. In July 2011 it was revealed that Sara’s mobile had been targeted by the News of the World for hacking.

Not that Rebekah was ever the most sensitive of flowers. Shortly after Rebekah was appointed as Editor of the Sun – the first female editor! – in 2003, Frank Bruno had the misfortune to develop serious mental health problems and was sectioned. The Sun ran the headline ‘Bonkers Bruno Locked Up’. Public outrage followed and even Rebekah realised that this was not good PR because later editions of the paper ran the equally enlightened headline ‘Sad Bruno In Mental Home’.

I am delighted to report that after her faux pas, Rebekah studied at the knee of the finest. The day after telling the world that Bonkers/Sad Bruno had been locked up/confined to a mental home, Rebekah published a 600 word response from this blog’s old friend, concealer of and colluder with paedophiles and serial bedfellow of a number of paedophiles’ friends, Marjorie Wallace, the Chief Executive of SANE (see post ‘One Dangerous Fucker’) – a charity that has robustly campaigned for bonkers people to be locked up. Since then the Sun has adopted a style guide concerning the coverage of mental health stories prepared by the paedophiles’ friends at SANE. Rebekah and her husband spent a day with Marjorie and made donations to SANE.

I discovered something else whilst I was researching for this post – that Tommy Sheridan and Rosemary Byrne had fallen out with the NUJ back in 2006, over the funding of some Parliamentary journos.

I have no idea whether Tommy Sheridan enjoyed himself at Cupids or not and I wouldn’t be in the least bit bothered if he did – the salient issue is whether he lied in Court about this. What has been demonstrated since Tommy Sheridan was jailed is that News International would do anything, anything at all, to achieve their ends and that a lot of craven spineless dickwits from across the political spectrum were happy to do their bidding. News International employees hacked phones, lied, bugged people, misrepresented themselves, bribed people, smeared people and paid public servants for stories – it certainly would not have been beyond their ken to have set Tommy Sheridan up. People are in general rather weak and a lot of people are very easily bought off – my own battle with a bunch of Top Doctors who facilitated a paedophile gang has made that very clear to me and I haven’t even won a defamation action against Murdoch.

Tommy Sheridan came under savage attack in both the Guardian and the left wing press for cross-examining Katrine Trolle in Court over her ‘sexual history’ – the story was reported as though Sheridan was a rapist who had cross-examined his own victim. Katrine Trolle had maintained that she had accompanied Sheridan to Cupid’s where they had participated in group sex. Sheridan maintained that this had not happened – it was Katrine Trolle’s evidence that News International were relying upon to win the case against Sheridan. Sheridan defended himself in Court – he was simply alleging that he had not had group sex at Cupid’s with Trolle and others. If Sheridan was telling the truth his only option was to cross-examine Trolle. This was not made clear in the vitriol that was poured upon Sheridan’s head for ‘traducing a female socialist’s character’.

One witness at Sheridan’s 2010 trial for perjury was Andy Coulson, the former News of the World Editor and at the time of the trial David Cameron’s Head of Communications at No 10. Coulson lied on oath during Sheridan’s trial.

Coulson was later charged with criminal offences in a case unrelated to Sheridan’s trial for perjury as a result of the police investigation into the News of the World phone hacking scandal and related matters

Sheridan’s leave to appeal against his conviction was rejected by the High Court in June 2011.

In 2015 Andy Coulson was charged with perjury as a result of lying under oath at Tommy Sheridan’s 2010 trial. Lord David Burns, sitting at the High Court in Edinburgh, acquitted Coulson although he accepted that Coulson had lied under oath. Lord Burns’s rationale was that the lies that Coulson had told at Sheridan’s trial were ‘not relevant’ to the case, that ‘not every lie amounts to perjury’ and that the ‘false evidence alleged in this indictment was not relevant evidence’. The jury at Coulson’s trial were not told that Coulson had already served seven months in prison after having being found guilty at the Old Bailey of conspiracy to hack phones when he was Editor of the News of the World.

Prior to being admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1977, David Burns worked as a legal assistant in Rochester, New York and San Francisco. In 1998 Burns was appointed the Deputy Commissioner for Social Security. Burns was the defence Counsel in the 2000-02 Lockerbie case. Burns was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in July 2012.

Coulson’s defence advocate was Murdo MacLeod QC. In 2015 Murdo also successfully defended Dr Yousi Badri, a Top Doctor charged with Middle East related terrorist offences.

Coulson’s acquittal was considered to be a ‘severe blow’ to Police Scotland and senior prosecutors in Edinburgh. The charges against Coulson were part of Operation Rubicon into allegations of hacking, bugging and Data Protection Act breaches by journalists employed by News International, which was launched in July 2011 after Murdoch closed the News of the World. Rubicon cost nearly £1 million in terms of police salaries and involved 23 hacking victims in Scotland. Bob Bird, the former Editor of the News of the World Scottish edition was charged, as was Doug White, a news executive with News of the World in Glasgow as well as Gill Smith, the news editor at the Scottish Sun. Charges against these three included perverting the course of justice. The Crown Office prosecutors dropped all the cases. The acquittal of Andy Coulson resulted in the collapse of Operation Rubicon.

After Coulson was acquitted, his friend Gary Farrow a PR consultant gave a few comments to the press regarding the ‘hell’ that Coulson had been through and how he was a lovely bloke who just wanted to get home to his family. Gary Farrow is an entertainment PR and his recent clients include Jeremy Clarkson, Elton John and Sharon Osbourne. His former clients include Jonathan Ross, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, George Michael, David Bowie, Bob Geldof and Paula Yates. Gary entered the world of pop music/showbiz in the mid-70s. He’ll have been one of the many who didn’t know about Jimmy Savile.

In Aug 2016 Murdoch’s company lost their appeal against the £200k that Sheridan was awarded for defamation.

So Tommy Sheridan was defamed and Andy Coulson lied on oath. In the wake of the mountains of conflicting evidence that was presented by the numerous people involved in the Tommy Sheridan saga – conflicting evidence which by definition meant that a number of people had perjured themselves – the only person who was found guilty and went to prison was Tommy Sheridan.

As for Murdoch’s right hand woman throughout much of the action, Rebekah Brooks – Murdoch paid her £10.8 million pounds to leave News International after the phone hacking and associated criminality scandal. At one point Rebekah took advice from her friend Tony Blair. In Sept 2015 Rebekah returned as CEO of News UK, formerly known as News International.

Tommy Sheridan has called for the Scottish Gov’t to hold an Public Inquiry into the whole sorry business.

Footnote: One of the people who was arrested and charged for perjury along with Sheridan but who had the charges against her dropped was Rosemary Byrne MSP. Byrne is a former teacher and trade union activist and for several years was President of Irvine Trades Council. There was some years ago a child abuse scandal in Ayrshire. Irvine is in Ayrshire and when people working with children are accused of child abuse they seek protection from their union – and they get it. In 2016 Byrne resigned from Solidarity.

When Showbiz Meets Politics

Whilst writing and researching for this blog and discovering how dodgy an awful lot of the ‘expert witnesses’, lawyers and judges were who were involved in cases that I’ve written about here – as well as of course my own case – and after uncovering some of their very interesting networks and connections, I started thinking of a few high profile cases in which people were imprisoned for serious offences but robustly protested their innocence whilst making some intriguing allegations that were potentially explosive but never went anywhere. And I remembered Jonathan King. Jonathan King was a man who ‘produced’ truly dreadful happy-pop, a rather irritatingly bumptious self-congratulatory celeb who hit the buffers in 2001 when he was sentenced to seven years in prison for child sexual abuse. He was completely trashed in the media and even the vacuous presenters on daytime TV who had only a short while before been toadying to the ‘millionaire music mogul’ were denouncing him as the scum of the earth on air. King’s career didn’t recover after his release from prison – he was ruined in a way that for example Michael Barrymore wasn’t. A sexually injured corpse was found in Barrymore’s swimming pool whilst Barrymore was in residence, which one would have thought would spell the end for him really, but after a much publicised nervous breakdown and some shedding of tears on air, Barrymore ended up back on prime time TV again. King however was never allowed back among polite company. Ever since his arrest King has furiously maintained his innocence and stated that he was stitched up – some of the things that he did probably did him further damage, such as garnering the support of the likes of Simon Cowell and clapped out former Radio 1 DJs and articulating his view that Jimmy Savile was a wronged man, but once he was out of prison he busied himself writing his account of what had gone on and he also produced a notorious ‘musical’ entitled ‘Vile Pervert’. Basically King alleged that he had been targeted for being gay, that the allegations against him were completely fabricated and that there had been some very dodgy legal manoeuvres in order to secure his conviction. He also claimed that he had been at Cambridge with the judge who sentenced him and that this judge had been involved in gay sex himself whilst at university. King was roundly labelled a particularly unsavoury paedophile who couldn’t take his punishment like a man, but I did notice that the judge didn’t sue him for defamation…

Recent evidence has emerged however suggesting that King may indeed have been the subject of a miscarriage of justice. This evidence includes one of King’s accusers admitting that he’d concocted his story for money, King actually being in the U.S. at the time of one of the alleged offences, statements being fabricated and the dates of the alleged offences being altered during the course of the trial. A number of people outside of King’s business circle are now suggesting that he was indeed wronged. It is now very evident that at the time that King was being pursued by the police, through the courts and then denounced by daytime TV presenters, that scores of other celebs – including Savile – were known to have been committing sex offences against children yet were treated very differently to King. The explanation usually proffered is the one that King originally espoused – it was a witch-hunt because he was a promiscuous homosexual man, rather than a promiscuous heterosexual man. This is possible, but King was jailed in 2001 – there were plenty of out gay celebs by then, indeed people in the pop music industry have been declaring themselves gay or bisexual since the early 70s. David Bowie launched his career on such claims. So I wondered if King had an enemy in a high place. I haven’t found the answer to that question, but whilst I was researching the background to King’s arrest and conviction, I came across something far more salient to this blog.

King was investigated by the National Criminal Intelligence Service after someone approached the publicist Max Clifford, trying to sell a story alleging sexual abuse by King and a number of other men. Of course Max Clifford himself has now met the same fate that befell King – he has been imprisoned for sex offences, one involving an under-age girl. When Clifford was charged and then convicted, he too protested his innocence but got the Jonathan King treatment and numerous people crawled out of the woodwork testifying that he was an utter toe rag. But Max Clifford was a man who would definitely have enemies – he had wrecked a lot of careers. Unlike King, Clifford’s circle didn’t stop at showbiz – Clifford’s business involved people in politics as well. Clifford himself always claimed to be a Labour supporter who was so angry at what he claimed was the mismanagement of the NHS over many years by the Tories that he wanted to damage John Major’s Government – he claims to have handled a few stories to embarrass the Tories. But Clifford was a friend of Murdoch’s right hand woman Rebekah Wade (now Rebekah Brooks) and has caused a bit of difficulty for Labour politicians as well. He stands accused of breaking the story involving Ron Davies that caused Davies to stand down from the Welsh Assembly Government and David Blunkett maintains that Clifford was involved in the media story that precipitated his second resignation, Blunkett being a serial resigner a la Mandelson. Clifford himself admits that he handled the selling to the Daily Mail of the ‘tell all’ diaries of Tracey Temple, which caused much entertainment for those of us who think that John Prescott is the most appalling old git. That was in 2006. In the same year, Clifford announced his intention to expose politicians who fail to abide by standards expected in public office. He claimed to have a ‘dedicated’ team of ‘loyal’ investigators. Clifford maintained that he has always been interested in more than just money, that he couldn’t stand hypocrisy in public life and was particularly disgusted by lying politicians. Now if in 2006 Max Clifford had wanted to expose lying politicians who had damaged the NHS, he could certainly have done so – because in that year I e mailed him and told him that I had documentary evidence of a number of politicians who had concealed serious wrongdoing in the mental health services, both in Wales and elsewhere. And I didn’t ask Max for any money either – I wrote to him on the advice of a friend as threats and harassment from the north Wales mental health services rained down upon me and my friends and the disgusting Brian Gibbons, then the Health Minister for Wales, wrote me a letter refusing to investigate my complaint, telling me that ‘this correspondence is closed’. There were deaths and imprisonments of Hergest patients on an almost weekly basis and I wanted everything exposed. I never received a reply from Max and I just presumed that because I hadn’t offered him a story about Gary Glitter he wasn’t interested – I had no knowledge then of Max’s desire to nail a few political hypocrites. But I’m wondering if Max was rather more interested in my e mail than I thought that he was – Max will have a much better nose than me and I bet he realised that there will have been a link between my story and the north Wales child abuse ring, which had by then received huge media coverage. What if upon receiving that e mail he realised that he could do what he had always really wanted to do and expose a bunch of politicians who had not only stood by whilst patients had died but who’d concealed a paedophile ring as well? Is that why Max might have been telling people in London that he was going to expose some politicians and assembled a team of undercover investigators?

Shortly after I e mailed Max, I started to get worried. Much of my evidence and all the e mails regarding the wrongdoing of the mental health services were on the computer that I used to use at work in a shared office in Bangor University. I discovered that whilst I was out of the office someone had been accessing my computer. Someone was also rifling through my desk regularly. There was one person in this shared office who was working on a joint project with the North West Wales NHS Trust and I wondered of it was her – she had at one point yelled at me that my investigations into the NHS ‘were threatening her career’ (they were as well because I later discovered that she was in cahoots with some of the worst offenders in the local NHS and had been up to allsorts). So I tightened my security procedures. Shortly after I purchased a new laptop and began to gradually use that and transfer everything over. Before I’d finished, my old computer was stolen. Yes, an ancient crappy, third or fourth hand computer given to a PhD student on her uppers as a favour was stolen. It was stolen along with three other old computers from the same office. My PhD supervisor had placed them all in the corner along with mine, ready for eventual disposal. They were stolen by a former member of Bangor University staff who had until recently shared the office with me and others. He was witnessed by a colleague arriving with a van and removing the computers in broad daylight. My colleague rang the university authorities to report what was going on and the thief was ordered to return them. He gave a bizarre explanation for the theft – that he was setting up a consultancy and thought that the University wouldn’t mind if he helped himself to a few old computers. Unfortunately the authorities at Bangor believed that my supervisor had encouraged him in this – he hadn’t, my supervisor knew nothing about the theft until I visited him at home and told him. My supervisor was baffled by this man’s behaviour and was speculating that perhaps he’d had a breakdown. But my supervisor was a vey trusting man – and he didn’t know that I’d written to Max. But one thing that I did know about the man who made off with my computer was that he had a famous brother-in-law – a man called John McTernan, who at the time was the Director of Political Operations for a man called Tony Blair.

Well I never knew if any of my evidence did fall into the grubby hands of John McTernan in the wake of the Brinks-Matt Ancient Computer Robbery, but I’ve got even more evidence now McTernan and it’s completely safe from you and your thieving brother-in-law.

Max Clifford remains in prison but continues to protest his innocence. I have no idea whether he is guilty or not but I do know that there are an awful lot of people who should be in there in prison with him.

Shortly after McTernan’s brother-in-law made off with my computer, but before Max Clifford was arrested, I was contacted by an investigative reporter who wanted to make a TV documentary about my encounters with the mental health services. She read the incriminating evidence and met me a number of times and was very keen to run the story. The day before we were due to start filming she telephoned me and asked me to name a public figure in Wales who knew some of what had happened to me but who was not involved in any wrongdoing whatever. I refused, so she asked me again if I would name this person telling me that she’d protect me if I was frightened of them. I replied that I wasn’t frightened of them – this person had done nothing at all wrong and I was not going smear an innocent person. I never heard from this journalist again after she told me that if I changed my mind they’d still run the story, but only if I changed my mind… I have never worked out what this journalist’s motives were – but I did know that those we know and love were desperately trying to damage the person that I was asked to smear, because they were rumoured to be close to Carwyn Jones no less and this seemed to be an attempt to get at the Labour Party in Wales. I also subsequently discovered that the dreadful Robert Bluglass’s daughter Amanda worked in the media herself. So I don’t know if this had been an attempt at a political sting or if it was a mate of Amanda’s trying to extract her father and his pals from a very big mess – but now I’m wondering if the ‘journalist’ might have been one of Max’s ‘undercover investigative reporters’. But it doesn’t matter now – I’m publishing it all myself on this blog and I’m not asking myself to smear innocent people.

Footnote: It was I think Rhodri Morgan who stated that the Welsh Gov’t wanted to put ‘clear red water’ between themselves and Westminster. Blair also seems to have had a problem with the Welsh – there is film-footage of him available watching sport on TV whilst yelling ‘it’s the fucking Welsh again’. Be my guest Tony, read along with me my blog post ‘The London Connection’ and feel free to film me afterwards yelling ‘it’s fucking New Labour again’.

Before I sign off, I’m pleased to announce that another topic covered by this blog recently has cropped up on the ‘IPM’ programme today, female genital mutilation that is. IPM often broadcasts some very odd things, but they’ve excelled this week. The programme featured a primary school teacher ‘raising awareness’ among her pupils regarding sexual abuse and FGM, very young pupils as well. Some of the stuff was fairly mainstream with it being explained to children that it wasn’t a good idea to participate in conversations with people who asked you to remove your pants in their presence, but then we moved into the tropes of the exotic. The primary school teacher concerned had invited all the parents along to talk to them about FGM – and to ask them to ‘share their experiences’. It transpired that one parent had actually undergone the most extreme form of FGM, thus had had nearly all of her external genitalia excised and much of what was left sewn up. So she told the other parents all about it. The primary school teacher, remarking upon the success of this meeting, commented that when the infibulated woman had stopped speaking, ‘you could hear a pin drop’. I bet you could – parents evenings have certainly changed since I was alive. During the short time that I worked as a teacher it never occurred to me to ask the parents to describe the state of their genitalia to each other, we just used to discuss the children’s progress.
