Apocalypse Now

Since I wrote my post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’ detailing the scientific fraud and misconduct that I witnessed on the part of some of those who are now among the biggest names in cancer research when I worked in cancer research myself, there has been a horde of celebs appearing in the media stressing that they have cancer and oh how they wish that they’d Got Tested. So in my post ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ I reminded everyone of the Chilvers Report published in Sept 1990 which within weeks was utterly discredited and made history in terms of a piece of work which was deeply flawed and could not be believed. The work was funded by the Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the team was led by Professor Clair Chilvers, a leading light in cancer research at the time who, after being completely disgraced, went to work for the Dept of Health, Chaired two NHS Trusts and now ‘leads’ a charity conducting mental health research. One of the authors, Prof Tim McElwain, was found dead after the scale of the disaster became clear – it was assumed that he had killed himself, although a veil seems to have been drawn over the circumstances of Prof McElwain’s death.

I mentioned that I don’t have access to a university library at the moment so I was unable to access a copy of the original paper by Chilvers et al. However, a reader has very kindly sent me a copy. The celebs are still queuing up to bang on about their Cancer Journeys – although I did hear Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, very effectively demolishing the myths surrounding the PSA test for prostate cancer on Radio 4, which was a breath of fresh air. Stokes-Lampard was robustly opposed by another Top Doctor who desperately wants many more men to undertake the PSA test, although it throws up so many false positives that it is virtually a waste of time.

Now that I have a copy of Chilvers’ paper to hand, I’ll make a few more observations. First, I need to clarify that although the paper is known as the Chilvers Report and in my post ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ I referred to ‘Chilvers et al’ because Chilvers led the team, I note that the co-authors actually list themselves alphabetically on the paper. The full reference is ‘Survival of Patients With Breast Cancer Attending The Bristol Cancer Help Centre’: F.S. Bagenal, D.F. Easton, E. Harris, C.E.D. Chilvers, T.J. McElwain, The Lancet, Sep 8, 1990.

Chilvers, Bagenal and Easton were named as being affiliated to the Section of Epidemiology, Institute of Cancer Research, Sutton, Surrey. Harris was affiliated to the Bristol Cancer Help Centre and McElwain was affiliated to the Section of Medicine, Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

I note that on the paper, Chilvers stated that her present address was the Dept of Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology, University of Nottingham Medical School, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. In my post ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ I mentioned that as a result of working at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Chilvers would have known about the research fraud and wrongdoing of Prof Robert Baldwin, Director of the Cancer Research Campaign Laboratories at Nottingham University (see post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’), because Baldwin’s labs were located across the road from the Queen’s Medical Centre and some of Baldwin’s oppressed staff were married to people who worked at the Queen’s Medical Centre. The medical students who complained bitterly after they had been on placement at Baldwin’s labs were students at Queen’s. The authorities at Queen’s undoubtedly knew about Baldwin’s scam and as I explained in my post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’, the CRC team at the University of Surrey also knew about Baldwin – members of that team were working at the Institute for Cancer Research by 1992.

So Clair Chilvers led that rubbish piece of research and before it was published had already found a home for herself in Nottingham – but not in the dreaded Robert Baldwin’s labs. Would Clair Chilvers like to tell us exactly what deal was done on the basis of the paper which was discredited within weeks of publication?

On Nov 10, 1990 letters from Chilvers and Sir Walter Bodmer (the Director of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, one of the bodies which funded the flawed study) – for details regarding Walter and his stellar career, see post ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ – accepting that the study had design faults and that the conclusions were invalid were published in The Lancet.

In ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ I explained how Walter Bodmer’s career nevertheless headed for the stars after the shit hit the fan – he did even better out of it all than did Clair Chilvers. But what of the other people involved who were working for the CRC and ICRF?

Of Ms F.S. Bagenal – who was named as the author ‘for correspondence’ – there is no trace in the field of cancer research. There is a Frances Bagenal who is a geophysicist – it is not entirely impossible that after the Chilvers Report, Ms F.S. Bagenal waved a fond farewell to the Top Doctors and the causes close to their hearts and retrained as a geophysicist, but that is just me speculating.

D.F. Easton is Douglas Easton who can be found on the University of Cambridge website. He is now Professor Douglas Easton, Director of the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology within the Dept of Public Health and Primary Care/Dept of Oncology. We are told that Douglas ‘studied Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge before gaining a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology at the University of London in 1992.  In 1995 he set up the Cancer Research UK Genetic Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge, where he was a CR-UK Principal Research Fellow from 2001-2011.  He was awarded Professorship of Genetic Epidemiology in 2003’.

So Douglas was involved in the Chilvers study whilst he was a PhD student – undertaking a thesis on statistics no less. His name was on a paper that was notorious in terms of epitomising everything that was wrong with science two years before he bagged his PhD. Five years after the publication of that paper, Douglas established his own unit at Cambridge University – funded by the charity which was brought into disgrace along with Douglas five years previously. Douglas now has a Chair at Cambridge. In 2017 Cambridge was delighted to find that it was ranked as the second best university in the world according to the league table produced by the Times Higher Education Supplement. So what exactly is it in which Douglas leads the world?

In the words of Cambridge University: ‘The main research interest of the Centre is in genetic susceptibility to common cancers and the aim of Professor Easton’s research group is to identify and characterise genetic variants associated with cancer risk, with particular emphasis on the hormone related cancers.  Much of their recent work has focused on the analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to characterise common susceptibility variants, and the characterisation of susceptibility loci through fine-mapping.  The group has conducted GWAS in breast cancer, prostate, endometrial and testis cancer.  Prof Easton’s group also co-ordinates three large international consortia: the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC), Prostate Cancer Association Group to Investigate Cancer Associated Alterations in the Genome (PRACTICAL, a collaboration with Professor Ros Eeles – team leader at ICR, London-) and, in collaboration with Dr Antoniou and Dr Georgia Chenevix-Trench (head of Cancer Genetics at QIMR Medical Research Institute, Queensland, Australia), the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA).  Professor Easton’s current work includes evaluating the role of rarer variants in breast and prostate cancer, and susceptibility to cancer-related traits including breast density, steroid hormones and telomere length’.

Anyone still want to Get Tested?

The Chilvers Report contains a bit more information that it is worth mentioning. The patients in the study came from the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, the Royal Marsden and two District General Hospitals – Crawley Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. I don’t know anything about Crawley Hospital, but when I worked for the CRC at the University of Surrey I knew much about the Royal Surrey County Hospital, because it was the local hospital. Professor Vincent Marks, the leader of the CRC team at the University of Surrey, was a Top Doctor as well as a scientist and Vincent worked at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Vincent Marks undoubtedly knew about Baldwin’s scam in Nottingham because two of the leading lights in his team discussed it with me. They were both good mates with Vincent Marks and they must have discussed it with him if they discussed it with me. There is another factor to be taken into consideration though. The Chilvers Report was widely perceived to have been an attempt to discredit the ‘alternative therapies’ offered at the Bristol Centre. Vincent Marks did not like alternative therapies and he was a Top Doctor who was voluble in his denouncement of them.

I am someone who was and is of the opinion that many ‘alternative therapies’ are ineffective and are as dishonestly marketed as much as some conventional treatments are, so I don’t have a problem with scientists who are trying to shine a light on quackery. However, whilst all this was going on, the medical establishment were involved in a full scale civil war with the Gov’t as well as with alternative practitioners and it was a very dirty war on the part of everyone. Vincent’s brother was Dr John Marks, the Chairman of the BMA. John Marks was such a pain in the bum to Thatcher’s administrations that he is singled out for a mention in Ken Clarke’s memoir (see post ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz’). John Marks was Chairman of the BMA whilst Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) and others were facilitating the Westminster Paedophile Ring. Documents in my possession demonstrate that Tony Francis was actually CC’ing letters about me to the BMA – these were letters detailing how Francis et al were going to fit me up for serious offences in an attempt to get me under lock and key.

The integrity of the BMA could not be relied upon.

There were some other people involved in the Chilvers study whose names were kept out of the scandal which followed the publication of the paper. In the introduction to the paper, it was explained that the study began in June 1986 – not, as Jean Corston MP stated in the Commons some years later, in 1985 – after Bristol Cancer Help Centre staff and patients invited a team of doctors and scientists to discuss how the results achieved by the ‘Bristol approach’ could be scientifically validated. The team advising on this were Lord McColl, Tim McElwain, Sir Walter Bodmer, Clair Chilvers and Dr Peter Macguire.

Lord McColl is Ian McColl, the former Professor of Surgery at Guy’s who according to his wiki entry still undertakes some teaching there. McColl was given a peerage for his work for disabled people, although I can’t find any indication of exactly what it was that he did to assist disabled people that caused someone to believe that McColl was deserving of this honour. McColl was PPS to PM John Major, 1994-97. So McColl was in post as the nightmare of dealing with Dafydd as he resisted retirement (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’), the shutting down of the North Wales Hospital – except of course it wasn’t closed down in 1995 as everybody was told, a part of it remained open – and organising the cover-up which was the Waterhouse Inquiry had to be handled. Whilst McColl was PPS to Major, Sir Peter Morrison was found dead, so that was one problem off a few shoulders.

McColl was Shadow Minister for Health, 1997-2000. So Lord Ian was on hand to deal with any difficult questions upon publication of the Waterhouse Report. Perhaps questions such as ‘why was a judge appointed to Chair this Inquiry who is a personal friend of so many people who ran the paedophile ring under investigation?’

McColl is a Trustee and surgeon to the charity Mercy Ships. For more details regarding Ian and a monumental porkie that he told to some of his colleagues in the Lords, see post ‘The Creme de la Creme’.

Recently McColl has become an advocate to stop human trafficking. In June 2015, he introduced a private member’s bill to prohibit the advertising of prostitution. Of course prostitutes should not be allowed to advertise. They should be trafficked by Dafydd et al and forced to work for them – perish the thought that the prostitutes might be running the business themselves and calling the shots.

Dr Peter Mcguire died in 2006. His obituary in the Guardian stated that ‘since 2004 all future cancer specialists in Britain are expected to receive specific training in how best to communicate with patients. This achievement was, in no small part, due to the work of Peter Maguire, Professor of Psychological Medicine at Manchester University, who has died aged 66 from leukaemia. He believed that psychiatry should be at the heart of medicine’.

So Peter Mcguire was a psychiatrist at Manchester University – which was where Tony Francis (Dr X) worked immediately prior to relocating to north Wales and assisting Dafydd with the sex trafficking gang. Furthermore Dafydd’s mate the psychiatrist Bob Hobson also worked at Manchester University – Manchester University played no small part in concealing the abuse of kids in care and psych patients in north Wales (see post ‘The Mentor’).

The Guardian explains that ‘In 1988, his [Mcguire’s] work attracted the attention of the Cancer Research Campaign (now CR UK), which funded his work for over 15 years’.

So Francis’s and Dafydd’s mate found that his sterling work came to the attention of the CRC in 1988 – whilst I was working with the CRC in Surrey and whilst, my documents show, Dafydd, Francis and their partner in crime Alun Davies, were illegally accessing information in attempts to find out personal information about me, including my home address. In July 1989, Professor Robert Bluglass – in collaboration with a number of others, including Professor Robert Owen the corrupt Medical Ombudsman from the Welsh Office – performed the Great Cover-Up of the criminality of Dafydd, Francis and Gwynedd Social Services, in the wake of my complaint about them (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’).

Exactly one year later, July 1988, the Butler-Sloss Report was published which concealed the extent of the mess which was the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal. The Cleveland Scandal was whipped up by some Top Doctors and social workers in the north east of England who had connections to the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales and it served as a very useful distraction from the criminal activities of the paedophiles of north Wales when Alison Taylor, Mary Wynch and I all witnessed and had gained evidence of serious crime on their part and refused to shut up about it (see post ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas And The Culprits Were Named’).

I only worked for the CRC in Surrey for one year – March 1988-March 1989 – because I was told that the funding to extend my contract had not been forthcoming from the CRC. I explained in post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’ how very recently I discovered that whilst I was working at Surrey, data collected by me had been given to Professor Nicola Curtin of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Medical School – who was not part of the project that I was working on and receiving funding for – without my knowledge or consent and that Curtin subsequently published it under her own name.

Whilst my data was given to someone else who continued to receive funding from the CRC, my contract was terminated – furthermore, not only did the CRC seek out Mcguire and give him lots of money at this time, but Mcguire’s funding continued after the Chilvers Report blew up in everyone faces.

The Guardian explains that ‘Peter maintained a busy clinical practice meeting the needs of seriously depressed cancer patients and their relatives at the Christie Hospital, Manchester and helping those struggling with traumatic bereavements. He always contended that to work directly with patients and their families was essential if he was to maintain the validity and integrity of his training and academic work.’

But Peter didn’t maintain any integrity at all, the Chilvers Report was evidence of that. Not that it held him back.

The Guardian states that ‘At a celebration of his career in 2004, many senior clinicians made it clear that their choice of speciality had been influenced by Peter’s work and all gave testimony to his personal interest in them. Some indicated that cancer care in their country or region had been influenced by the ‘Maguire’ model. The work now continues at the Maguire Communication Skills Training Unit, with initial funding from the Sir Edward Holt Trust, Cancer Research UK and the local cancer network’.

Mcguire read medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London and trained in psychiatry at Edinburgh and Oxford, where he established collaborative research between the disciplines of psychiatry and surgery before moving to Manchester in 1974. So Mcguire moved to Manchester the very same year that Dafydd’s mate Bob Hobson  relocated to Manchester. Which was also at about the time that Tony Francis joined the merry band at Manchester.

In 1988 – halfway through what would become the disgraced Chilvers study – Mcguire established and directed the Cancer Research Campaign Psychological Medicine Research Group.

According to the Guardian, ‘Peter was a source of inspiration as well as an excellent colleague and dedicated researcher and clinician. We shall miss his loud and infectious laugh and his mischievous sense of fun’.

The world nearly split its sides laughing when Tim McElwain topped himself – what a scamp Peter Mcguire must have been.

The Christie Hospital, Mcguire’s stomping ground for over 30 years, has been classified as ‘outstanding’ by the CQC.

Now CR UK et al – please provide details of the circumstances of Tim McElwain’s death. We can’t ask Tony Francis what stinking heap of crap he, Dafydd and his mate Mcguire cooked up because Francis killed himself a few years ago just after Operation Pallial re-opened the investigation into the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal and Mcguire has turned his toes up as well now, but someone somewhere knows why Tim McElwain killed himself whilst the rest of this bunch of crooks and charlatans went from strength to strength. Oh – and did the Chilvers study REALLY begin in 1986 as claimed? Or did that study perhaps begin in 1988 – when Dafydd, Tony Francis and the BMA decided that I was going to be shafted and that their mates would be receiving CRC dosh instead? You’ve lied about everything else, how can anyone believe a word of what was published? Will you now make your data public?

I managed to stay alive against all the odds- but Tim McElwain didn’t you worthless scumbags. Was Prof McElwain’s death actually a suicide?

Tim McElwain was found dead on 26 Nov 1990. Margaret Thatcher announced her resignation on 22 Nov 1991 but remained in office until 28 Nov, by which time John Major had been appointed to succeed her. Sir Peter Morrison – who had organised Thatch’s failed leadership campaign whilst molesting children – remained as her PPS until 28 Nov.

Just to encourage everyone to come clean, I’ll name the other Top Doctors involved in this dreadful episode, or at least those whom Clair Chilvers thought it worth citing in the acknowledgements on the paper: Prof P.S. Boulter, Dr A. Folkes, Dr A.Y. Rostom, Dr C.A. Topham, Dr W.F. White, Dr J. Brent (Guildford); Mr J.C. Ball, Mr S.J. Janvrin, Mr J. Neely (Crawley); Dr Trevor Powles and Dr Sue Ashley (Royal Marsden Hospital); Professor Sir Murdering Bastard (BMA, Royal College of Paedophiles).

I’ve made the last one up but I bet no-one’s spotted that.

The issue of The Lancet which published the laughable Chilvers Report also published – as a ‘Viewpoint’ column –  an article concerning the Assisted Death Institute of Medical Ethics Working Party on the Ethics of Prolonging Life and Assisted Death. The Chairman of the working party was Mr Geoffrey Drain.

Geoffrey Drain began his career as a trade unionist and ended it as a Director of the Bank of England. Geoffrey Sewer was Assistant Secretary, Institute of Hospital Administrators 1946-52; Executive, Milton Antiseptic Ltd 1952-58; he was called to the Bar in 1955; Deputy General Secretary, NALGO 1958-73 and General Secretary 1973-83; member, General Council of the TUC 1973-83; President, National Federation of Professional Workers 1973-75; Director, Bank of England 1978-86.

So Geoffrey Sewer led the union which represented the people who ran institutions like the North Wales Hospital Denbigh in the post-war years when the inmates were straight-jacketed, shocked and lobotomised because chlorpromazine was not yet available to drug them senseless.

During the 10 years that Sewer led NALGO, 1973-83, it was the largest white-collar union in Britain and the third largest union in the country with ‘an exceptional influence’ in local and central government. Many of those named in the child abuse scandals – including in north Wales – were members of NALGO and some of them were NALGO reps. Sewer led NALGO during the years of excess in terms of the infiltration of the UK Social Services Depts by paedophiles – it was whilst the nation’s paedophiles were sheltering under the umbrella which was NALGO that business boomed at John Allen’s Bryn Alyn Community and Dafydd’s dungeon filled up with victims of sexual assault.

In Dec 2017, the Morning Star reported the death of Ivan Beavis, the Morning Star Fighting Fund organiser and for many years its circulation and then campaigns manager. Before working at the Morning Star, Beavis was an activist and a rep with NALGO and was elected to its National Executive in 1988. Beavis stayed on the Executive through NALGO’s merger with NUPE and COHSE to form UNISON in 1993 (for more details of the way in which the comrades in these unions abused vulnerable people, see post ‘A Very COHSE Relationship With Some Very Nasty People’), stepping down in 1999.

Jeremy Corbyn told the Morning Star that he remembered meeting Mr Beavis when Beavis was NALGO rep at County Hall in London and Jeremy was the NUPE organiser. ‘The staff association had more members’, Jeremy recalled, ‘but under Ivan NALGO membership grew and we worked very closely together. Ivan was dedicated to trade unionism and all progressive causes and was always a cheery presence on demonstrations’.

I’m glad that you all had a good time on the demos Jezza – up in north Wales the victims of a paedophile gang were imprisoned in a dungeon and were being found dead and those responsible had mates in your neck of the woods in Haringey and Islington.

As for Geoffrey Sewer, he started his political life as a left-winger and a Bevanite. He was a Labour councillor in Hampstead and a leading figure in that local party during the late 1950s. He tried unsuccessfully to force the expulsion of Gaitskell from the Hampstead party when Gaitskill as Labour leader advocated the toning down of socialist ideology and the abandonment of Clause 4 and nationalisation. Sewer shifted to the right during the period of Wilson’s Gov’t, especially after his appointment as Deputy General Secretary of NALGO, 1958-73. By the time that he became General Secretary of the union of choice of the paedophile gangs, Sewer was a ‘moderate, statesmanlike trade-union leader ready to set a pattern for responsible trade unionism and co-operation with [Wilson’s] Gov’t of 1974’. By then Sewer was a member of the TUC General Council.

Four years later, in the critical period of James Callaghan’s premiership, Sewer became a member of the ‘Neddy Six’, a powerful group of the TUC’s inner cabinet. The Neddy Six – so called because they comprised the six most senior TUC leaders who sat on the National Economic Development Council – were the principal conduit between the Labour government and the trade-union movement. The other members were: Jack Jones, Hugh Scanlon, David Basnett, Alfred Allen, Len Murray. All but Jones and Sewer became peers – I cannot imagine why Sewer did not become a peer, I would have thought that he would have fallen into the same category as Margaret Hodge and have been given every gong and honour that it was possible to be given.

Sewer was at the historic meeting between the PM James Callaghan and the TUC leaders on the eve of the 1978 trade-union congress – a meeting which Callaghan held over dinner at his Sussex farm to discuss the timing of the coming General Election. Yes, the PM actually wined and dined a paedophiles’ friend and asked his advice as to when to call a General Election. But then that PM was busy colluding with serious crime to conceal the child molesting of George Thomas, a fellow south Wales Labour MP – and by the time that Sewer was telling the PM what to do, Speaker of the House (see post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’).

The Margaret Thatcher Foundation has published the diaries of Thatch online and I note that on 25 June 1979 15.00 Thatch had a meeting with the  TUC Economic Committee – Lord Allen, Mr. David Basnett, Mr. Frank Chapple, Mr. Tony Christopher, Mr. Geoffrey Drain, Mr. Moss Evans, Mr. Alan Fisher, Mr. Joe Gormley, Mr. Tom Jackson, Mr. Clive Jenkins, Mr. T. Parry, Mr. Harry Urwin, Mr. Len Murray, Mr. Norman Willis, Mr. David Lea, Mr. Bill Callaghan, Mr. Cumming, Mr. Percy, Mr. Barber] + Chancellor of the Exchequer [Sir Geoffrey Howe] and Secretary of State for Employment [Jim Prior] [ Mr. Ian Gow, Mr. David Wolfson, Mr. Clive Whitmore, Mr. Henry James, Mr. Tim Lankester] – No. 10.

It’s good to know that Thatch was meeting Geoffrey Sewer whilst he was affording complete protection to the people who were supplying her mates Peter Morrison and Jimmy Savile – as well as others – with under-aged kids to abuse. Whilst Thatch was holding this tete a tete with Sewer, Mary Wynch was illegally imprisoned in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’) and later told me that Dafydd encouraged the adolescents on the children’s ward to have sex with each other whilst the Angels gathered around to watch.

The Good Old Days!

Sewer’s obituary in the Indie stated that Sewer ‘was an improbable trade union leader’, ‘always immaculately dressed, as befitted the highest-paid trade union leader at that time’. He was a long-standing member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Jeffrey Archer was a member of the MCC and Robert Alexander QC – who acted as Archer’s Counsel in 1987 when Archer won libel damages after perjuring himself – was President and Chairman of the MCC (see post ‘Tuppence And His Fragrant Wife’).

Sewer was a Director of the Bank of England, 1978-86 and a Director of numerous companies. He was a member of countless committees dealing with health administration, local government and the law – including the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Aid (1974- 76). Who better to occupy such roles than the man who led the organisation which dispensed free legal advice to gangs of paedophiles who were murdering the witnesses to their crimes?

This is why I have serious reservations about assisted dying. It’s not that I want terminally ill people to die slowly and painfully in great distress, it is that the Top Doctors and those who toady to them cannot be trusted on any matter and are involved in serious organised crime.

A few days ago BBC News Wales ran an interview with an elderly lady whom it claimed was a ‘a spy’ whose lips were still sealed about ‘war time secrets’. I watched the clip and as far as I could work out this spy was about as much of a spy as Trumpers was – she had played a minor role in the WW II effort and explained that she’d joined up Special Operations Executive because she liked the uniform. People playing ‘minor’ roles in WWII did of course matter – after all some of them died – but there was a cadre of well-bred young women who, a la Trumpers, did nothing but were given grandiose job titles and have dined out on it ever since. I suspect that the ‘spy’ interviewed by the BBC was one of that group. This spy however – one Helen Taylor-Thompson – has done a few other things of far greater interest since she sported that fetching uniform during the war.

Helen Taylor-Thompson is Co-Founder and Life President of something called CAN (Community Action Network), ‘a network of social entrepreneurs who share a commitment to tackle social problems through business’. In the mid 1990s Helen – along with Adele Blakebrough and Lord Andrew Mawson, co-founders of CAN – organised the Great Banquet, a nosh in London for 33,000 people ‘from every background’, although presumably they weren’t all sitting around the same dining table. This was the launch of CAN.

Before I provide a few details about Helen the Spy Whose Lips Are Forever Sealed, I need to say a bit about Adele and Lord Andrew Mawson to give readers some idea of the sort of folk involved with CAN and that massive nosh.

Adele Blakebrough ‘has helped companies such as  Sony, Coca-Cola, and O2 to implement corporate social responsibility strategies’. She ‘strongly believes that big businesses can learn lessons from the Third sector, as well as charities learning from the corporate world’. Adele’s ‘strength as a speaker is to connect her own world with the worlds of her audience’. Adele is Chief Executive of the Social Business Trust and ‘one of the UK’s most influential social entrepreneurs’. She is ‘an inspirational keynote speaker on corporate responsibility’. She founded the Social Business Trust in 2010 and set out on a mission to ‘identify growing social enterprises and to help scale them up, with the help of partners, including Credit Suisse, Clifford Chance, British Gas and BT’.

You couldn’t get much more socially responsible than those companies that Adele has been involved with could you. According to someone from Sony, ‘Adele has a unique combination of vision and experience. Not only does she inspire you to do something but gives you the tools to do it’.

Adele was Director of Kaleidoscope, a ground-breaking London charity aimed at stabilising the lives of heroin addicts.

Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and CAIS work as partners with a drug charity called Kaleioscope – I wonder if it’s the same one.

Adele is ‘a witty and highly engaging speaker, who is never afraid to tell stories about things that have gone wrong in order to help people understand how to improve their chances of getting things right. She knows the worlds of the Third sector, the public sector and business and can talk with insight and inspiration about getting the best out of people in all three. She is comfortable in a wide range of settings. She has spoken with great impact to large gatherings of civil servants, management consultants, bankers, professional women and at a number of party political conferences’.

Adele’s strength as a speaker ‘is to connect her own world with the worlds of her audience, so that people find themselves inspired in their own situation through intensified understanding of someone else’s challenges and triumphs. So, the banker and management consultant gain insight from the world of community re-cycling or drug abuse’.

Adele originally trained as a Baptist Minister.

The Great Banquet may have brought people from all social backgrounds together, but Adele doesn’t remember the cleaning lady – Adele remembers that the Great Banquet was attended by a man called Tony Blair and another man called the Rev Jesse Jackson.

However Adele really hit the jackpot when in 2010 she sat at the Cabinet table with PM David Cameron and Deputy PM Nick Clegg when they launched their ‘Big Society’ programme. Readers might remember that the Big Society was that idea of Dave’s which led to Dave giving millions to Kids’ Company without question, because Cameron and Cleggy were too thick to see through the pseudoscientific bollocks of Camila Batmanghelidjh.

Cameron – next time that a woman with a degree in theatre studies starts talking to you about the ‘thermostatic regulation of the emotions’ and ‘self-soothing neural pathways’, do invite someone who knows their arse from their elbow to come and listen to the pitch before handing over the blank cheque.

Adele has ‘convened a top level summit on the role of social enterprise in education, with the support of Ministers and ex-Ministers from across the political spectrum’. Where no doubt a few more gullible idiots were persuaded to part with taxpayers’ money.

Another co-founder of CAN, Lord Andrew Mawson, is also a social entrepreneur who trained as a Baptist Minister – he was ordained in 1979. Mawson was President of CAN until 2010. Andrew is ‘best known’ for his work at the Bromley Bow Centre, the UK’s first Healthy Living Centre. The Centre ‘has pioneered a whole new approach to community regeneration, which uses entrepreneurship and the creative arts as the tools to transform one of the most deprived areas of the UK. In doing this the Centre has led the development of and become a national exemplar for Healthy Living Centres and Children’s Centres’.

Healthy Living Centres have made bugger all difference to the health of the UK population as statistics relating to health outcomes in the UK demonstrate and the evidence regarding the various types of ‘children’s centres’ suggests that their effectiveness is variable. For example ‘Sure Start’ benefited disadvantaged parents but there was no effect on children’s outcomes, or at least those outcomes which were measured because people presumed that there would be an impact upon them.

However, we are assured that the Bromley by Bow model is now ‘recognised internationally’ and Andrew has been invited to present his work at numerous international symposiums, including the 18th World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education sponsored by the WHO. The Centre is cited in numerous White Papers and policy documents and was described by Sir Kenneth Calman as ‘five years ahead of its time’.

Sir Kenneth Calman was Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, 1989-91 and then of England and Wales, 1991-98. Ken was appointed by John Major – he succeeded the old crook Sir Donald Acheson who was tasked with getting those involved with the Westminster Paedophile Ring to wake up to the fact that they could well contract HIV from the under-aged drug using rent boys with whom they were having sex (see post ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz’) – but Sir Ken hung around long enough to serve under Blair, at least for a little while. Readers will have noticed that Sir Ken was CMO for England and Wales during the paedophile years in north Wales, the years when Dafydd built up his drugs empire, the closing down that wasn’t of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and the first part of the Waterhouse Inquiry…

Sir Ken’s good fortune continued whilst Blair was PM and beyond – Sir Ken became VC of Durham University and is now Chancellor of Glasgow University…

Sir Ken is an oncologist and he’ll know all about the endemic research fraud in cancer research. For more details re Sir Ken and a Mystery which took place at Glasgow University on his watch, see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part V’.

Lord Andrew Mawson has been a member of the PM’s Delivery Unit – which PM I do not know, but as Blair, Brown and Cameron all used the same lame advisors who came out with the sort of idiocy spouted by Andrew and Adele it probably doesn’t matter. He was a founding member of Poplar Harca, (a £300 million housing company in east London) and of Leaside Regeneration Ltd., which runs a £100 million regeneration programme in east London close to the Olympic site. Lord Andrew was also involved in something called Water City – it seems to be a grandiose ambition to  transform some canals into something amazing – with Blair’s mate Lord Richard Rogers, who supplied the nation with much entertainment when he designed Blair’s folly the Millennium Dome.

In 1996 Andrew was asked to take responsibility for the Stanton Guildhouse in the Cotswolds where he is now President.  Stanton Guildhouse is a ‘successful national training and conference facility and a sustainable social enterprise’. Stanton Guildhouse is certainly not something for the disposessed of East London – it is ‘a beautiful Grade II listed conference centre specialising in select, small conferences’, which promotes ‘social entrepreneurship, assists with corporate team building and advises on business troubleshooting’. Stanton provides fully catered accommodation in a ‘visually stunning manor house’ – ‘an elegant venue for weddings or special events’.

Andrew received an OBE for his work in Tower Hamlets in the Millennium New Years Honours List. He was awarded a peerage in 2007 – he sits as a crossbencher.

Manchester University’s International Festival of Public Health web page also features Andrew. We are told that Andrew ‘has recently been appointed Chairman of Well North, a Public Health England initiative linking local authorities and the private sector to improve the health of people living in some of the most deprived parts of the North of England’ and that ‘over a decade ago, Andrew and his partners wrote one of the earliest papers proposing that the Olympics Games be brought to east London. He is today a Director of the London Legacy Development Corporation. Over the next 25 years, this company will plan, develop, and manage the Olympic Park in east London and create a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games’.

Keynote speakers at Manchester University’s International Festival of Public Health included Professor Sir Michael Marmot. Marmot is a psychiatrist who has spent the last few decades fighting health inequalities and remains gobsmacked as to why his battle has not been in the least bit effective (see post ‘Professor Prestigious And His Associates’). Sir Bruce Keogh was Medical Director of the NHS in England and National Medical Director of the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS England).

So Adele and Andrew have spent years working in spheres and geographical locations in which vulnerable people are mistreated, harmed and let down by the various welfare services, including kids in care who end up working in the sex trade. More recently Adele and Andrew have ingratiated themselves to those at the top of the food chain who oversaw such serious failure but clocked up honours and gongs.

Now for Helen the Spy. Helen was elected to the Board of the Mildmay Mission Hospital in the East End in 1952 and afterwards sat on a number of Government NHS committees. She later fought the closure of the Mildmay Hospital and became its Chair when it reopened as the first hospice in Europe for people living with AIDS in 1988.

Online information about Helen explains that when the Mildmay Hospital was ‘cut’, Helen Taylor-Thompson ‘took over the hospital and reopened it herself’. It is explained that Helen is just the last in ‘a succession of strong women driven by a passion to care for the sick and the outcast, ever since the eighteen-sixties’ when the Mildmay ‘was established to minister to those in Shoreditch suffering from the cholera epidemic’.

There are shades of ‘Call the Midwife’ in this account of the work of the Mildmay. The reality is that health and welfare provision for the poor whilst the Mildmay Mission Hospital was doing its bit was pretty brutal. The poor were usually seen to be the architects of their own misfortune and many people attributed their poverty as well as any other problems that they encountered to inborn inherited deficiency. Their children were frequently removed from them and they had absolutely no say in what happened to those children – a lot of them were of course transported overseas as part of the child migration programme which has recently reared its head and caused such embarrassment to the UK Gov’t. Children from the East End were part of that programme and the Mildmay could well have been involved – Helen et al will certainly have known about it.

The Mildmay began life in 1866 as a mission hospital founded by Catherine Pennefeather as a memorial to her husband, the Irish evangelist William Pennefeather. In 1890, a foundation stone was laid for a purpose-built hospital which opened in 1892 and the Mildmay Hospital ‘served the people of the East End continuously until it was shut by Margaret Thatcher’s Gov’t in 1982’.

Helen Taylor-Thompson ‘refused to let the noble history and tradition of care that the Mildmay represented’ be broken. She reopened it in 1985 and three year laters in 1988, Mildmay inaugurated Europe’s first dedicated HIV clinic. It was Helen ‘who delivered the circumstance in which Princess Diana came to the Mildmay and kissed a patient who was dying of AIDS upon the cheek, a powerful gesture that reverberates in the collective memory to this day and that contributed to overcoming the ignorance and prejudice which surrounded the disease at that time’. It was an event that ‘occurred within a climate in which staff of the Mildmay were shunned in the neighbourhood and even refused haircuts at local barbers out of misplaced fear of infection’.

Helen is the direct descendant of the missionary Dr David Livingston and the daughter of the Chairman of the African Inland Mission.

The Mildmay was a ‘little general hospital, much loved’, with just a few wards and an A&E department. In the 1970s, the District Health Authority had tried closing it ‘but they were frightened to do so because it had such a good reputation’. Other small hospitals were closing locally and ‘many people felt that the Mildmay had had its day’, yet Helen believed it was still valuable because it was a Mission Hospital and it worked with the most vulnerable people. Helen was Chairman of the Hospital Advisory Council which she had formed to support the Mildmay and, when she saw that it was next in line to close, she ‘got the community behind her’ to fight. Nonetheless Helen was told that the Mildmay would have to close and indeed it did.

Helen took legal advice and consulted Peter Shore MP and Kenneth Clarke in her efforts to have the Mildmay re-opened. She requested a long lease. Two months later she was offered the opportunity of a peppercorn lease for 99 years – with strings attached. According to Helen she then received a phone call from an Angel’s father who wanted to help – and who just happened to work for the GLC. Helen had a feasibility study carried out by an accountant and her original plan was to work with young people who had suffered  chronic injuries in accidents and people with multiple sclerosis.

The District Health Authority opposed plans to re-open the hospital because they wanted to sell it. Helen was given a year ‘to make a go of it’. To raise money, Helen sold the Mildmay Convalescent Home for half a million and then discovered that a Trust fund existed from 1948 when the Mildmay was taken over by the NHS. It was £365,000, enough to do what Helen wanted for eighteen months. By now the Mildmay had been closed for three years. Helen stated that the first patient was admitted some six months later – so presumably this would have been towards the end of 1985 or the beginning of 1986. Elizabeth Willcocks, the previous matron who was in retirement, agreed to come back for two years and the Mildmay reopened.

Thirteen months later, the Mildmay was asked if they would accept some AIDS patients. Helen proposed to the Board that the top floor of the building should be used for AIDS patients. The Mildmay encountered much opposition – she mentioned that bricks were thrown through the windows, that other Christians opposed their work and gay groups boycotted them because of course the Mildmay missionaries were perceived to be ‘Bible bashers’.

In Oct 1988 the Mildmay opened as the first hospice in Europe dedicated to treating people with AIDS. The demand was such that the whole hospital – 36 beds – was turned over for that purpose. The Gov’t then agreed to fund the Mildmay.

Helen remembered that ‘the press used to be on the roof of the building opposite with telephoto lenses’ because they had some ‘quite well-known people as patients’. She explains that the Mildmay was not a sad place although people were dying, because the patients were so well looked after and that the Top Doctors ensured that they suffered no pain. Princess Diana came regularly and there was a patient called Martin who was dying and had lost touch with his family for eleven years. Helen asked Martin if he’d like to present a bouquet to Diana – the BBC were on hand and filmed Diana as she kissed Martin. His mother rang shortly after and ‘the whole family were reunited’ before he died.

The Chairman of the District Health Authority was so impressed that he paid a private visit to Helen.

Peter Shore was MP for Stepney, 1964-97. Shortly after he was elected, he was appointed PPS to Harold Wilson the PM. Denis Healey referred to Shore as ‘Harold’s lapdog’. Wilson concealed much wrongdoing, including the abuse of children and psych patients in north Wales and George Thomas’s sex offending in south Wales – George Thomas got on well with Wilson (see post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’).

Stepney is in the Borough of Tower Hamlets. Tower Hamlets was yet another London Borough that sent kids in its care into the arms of the paedophiles of north Wales (see post ‘Tower Hamlets, Paul Boateng and Tessa Jowell’). Peter Shore knew what was happening to those kids as did everybody involved in health and social care in the area  in which the Mildmay Hospital was located. Ken Clarke knew about the paedophile ring in north Wales and he knew about Peter Morrison’s involvement with it. Clarke knew that it was being concealed by the mental health services and the wider NHS and Shore will have known that as well.

When Helen Taylor-Thompson first began her battle to save the Mildmay, no-one was interested – probably because it was seen as a very outdated institution run by people who were seen by the locals as God botherers who had probably been alienated by Helen et al for years. However Helen obviously did wield influence and because she’d been involved with running the NHS for so long she knew how to campaign.

Helen only received Gov’t support for her Mildmay ambitions from the mid 1980s onwards. By this time Thatcher’s Gov’t were beginning to face the horrible truth that AIDS was terminal and infectious – no matter what Thatcher and her Gov’t spouted about Victorian values and not promoting homosexuality, they were quietly tolerating promiscuous gay sex among some of their own inner circle and in some cases the sexual exploitation of underaged people.

It was the awful Sir Donald Acheson – a Top Doctor who had spent years concealing the activities of Dafydd et al – who when he was Chief Medical Officer impressed upon Thatcher’s Gov’t that HIV killed people if they contracted it, there was no effective treatment and because of the lifestyle of some high profile people including politicians, they were at risk of being clobbered (see post ‘ Professor Prestigious And His Associates’). The Mildmay received Gov’t funding at the very time when there was a massive cover-up in north Wales over the business model of the paedophile ring – children were sent to north Wales children’s homes, brutalised, abused, groomed and trafficked back down to London and Brighton for sex work. John Allen’s Bryn Alyn Community mainly targeted boys – there was literally a supply of rent boys into London from north Wales and by the mid 1980s they were becoming infected with HIV.

Helen Taylor-Thompson, Peter Shore and Ken Clarke would have all known exactly what the score was. The young men dying of AIDS in the Mildmay were the witnesses to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal and the Westminster Paedophile Ring. They are all dead and Helen et al have never spoken about how those boys contracted HIV. There were often references to them having fallen out with their families – it wasn’t simply because they were gay, it was because they had become involved with male prostitution and they had been taken into ‘care’ when they were kids anyway.

Missionaries have a bad press these days – people tend to construct them as colonial types who impose themselves on other cultures and cause great damage. Not all missionaries did do that, some of them did excellent work and were respectful and sensitive to people from different backgrounds. Helen and those running the Mildmay however knew exactly what a sordid deal they had struck and why they were being given dosh and receiving visits from Diana. The witnesses to the most dreadful scandal were dying and STILL everybody was keeping quiet.

It occurs to me that although Helen’s career as a spy might have been rather exaggerated, her work with the Special Operations Executive could well have opened doors to the people with connections in the security services whom it has now been admitted concealed the organised abuse of children in north Wales and elsewhere.

A new building for the Mildmay Hospital is currently under development and Helen Taylor-Thompson remains ‘undiminished in her fervour to be of service to humanity’ – she is currently involved in an ‘ambitious educational project’. Thare Machi Education (originally Starfish Initiative) began in 2000 and Helen Chairs the organisation. Thare Machi Education (TME) uses interactive DVDs in local languages to educate children and young people regarding HIV. TME works with partners in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Malawi, India and Cambodia and soon will be in DR Congo, Zambia and China.

As every good hospital does, the Mildmay has some high profile supporters, including a few celebs.

Margaret Sentamu has been President of Mildmay International since 2010. Her background is in ‘recruitment and executive search’ and more recently she has focused on helping organisations to ‘harness difference’ in the workplace and in communities.  Margaret is a member of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and the CIPFA, the regulatory body for accountants. Margaret became President of Mildmay International in 2010. Margaret is married to the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.

Corrupt solicitors who were somehow never disciplined assisted the organised child abuse gangs, as of course did crooked accountants – John Allen became a millionaire as a result of the serious criminal empire which was the Bryn Alyn Community and Dafydd’s done pretty well for himself too. Huw Vaughan Thomas was the Chief Executive of Gwynedd County Council for much of the time when the paedophile gang operated in Gwynedd’s Social Services. Huw’s wife Enid Rowlands was and might still be Chair of the Solicitors’ Regulation Society.

Margaret might have dedicated herself to harnessing difference, but her husband is famously homophobic and it is highly likely that someone from Margaret’s background is as well. The Sentamus are both Ugandan. Uganda is not a friendly place if one is gay – homosexuality is illegal and gay people are frequently murdered once they have been outed. Ugandans are seeking asylum in the UK on the grounds that their lives are in danger in Uganda.

Margaret is also a non-executive Director of the Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust – who have still not come clean about Jimmy Savile and his legacy. One of Margaret’s roles is as Mental Health Act Manager. There have been serious mental health failures in Leeds and York.

John Sentamu was the Bishop of Stepney, 1996-2002. He was in post when there were complaints that children in care from that area had been abused in north Wales and he was in post throughout the Waterhouse Inquiry.

Earlier this week the BBC reported that John Sentamu was one of the Church of England leaders who had been named in a misconduct complaint in 2015 after someone alleged that they had been sexually assaulted by a vicar in Bradford but had failed to act. The Church has struck out the complaint on the grounds of a time limit.

The Vice-President of the Mildmay is the Rt Revd Adrian Newman who became the Bishop of Stepney in July 2011. He describes himself as a ‘social entrepreneur’ – of course. Newman worked as an economist before ministerial training at Trinity College Bristol and was ordained in 1985. His current portfolios within the Diocese of London include a response to the Olympics legacy, overseeing a joint venture with the Church Urban Fund to engage with issues of poverty across the capital, policing in London, and our continuing engagement with Urban Regeneration across the capital.

The Chair is the Very Revd John Richardson. He is an Anglican priest in the Diocese of Canterbury who joined the Board of Mildmay in 2004. John became Chairman in 2007 after visits to HIV and AIDS projects in Uganda, London and across the Pennines where he worked with Top Doctors and other health professionals. Since 2009 John has been working in partnership with statutory and regional authorities in Margate, one of the most deprived parishes in the South East of England.

The interim Chief Executive is Carol Stone who temporarily stepped down as a Trustee role to act as interim CEO. Carol was an Angel for nearly 40 years after training at King’s College Hospital. She retired as the Chief Executive of the Ellenor Lions Hospice in 2014 after 26 years. Carol became the senior nurse specialist at what was then the Ellenor Foundation in 1988, eventually moving to nursing director and finally CEO. At her time at the hospice, she introduced respite care in the area, and established the charity’s specialist home service children’s hospice, Chyps. Carol also assisted with the merger of the Ellenor Foundation with the Lions Hospice in 2007.
Dr Ross White was CEO of Mildmay for nine years until Feb 2018 – he is now CEO of charity in Surrey.

Jim Bennett has 25 years of working in the charity sector and was recently ordained as Deacon in the Anglican church. His charity background includes working at a hospice in South East London where he joined as its first fundraiser and over time became its Chief Executive. He was at the hospice for 17 years and helped to develop both its care services and but took a key role in developing its sustainable income streams. When he left the hospice, he joined a national charity and led that through a period of transition and development. Jim left full time employment to train for the ministry and is now Assistant Curate at Saint Augustine’s in Slade Green, Kent.

Diana Forrest is a Top Doctor, with experience in developing countries and the UK. She started her public health activities in Tower Hamlets and she was Director of Public Health for Knowsley PCT for the last 12 years of her working life. For seven years after her retirement, Diana worked in a voluntary capacity on a local housing estate, linking church and community to improve quality of life on that estate. She also ran a foodbank, and chaired a small charity which engaged with children and families on the estate.

Diana has been following the progress of Mildmay since the 1970s and now she has moved to Hertfordshire has become more involved. Dr. Diana Forrest is listed as a Director of seven companies – she has resigned from six and is currently Director of ‘Transforming Lives Together, Chester Diocese/Church Urban Fund’.

So Diana spent many years as a Top Doctor working in public health in Liverpool. Healthcare in Liverpool was dominated by the Liverpool branch of Dafydd’s network (see post ‘These Sharks Are Crap As Well’). More recently Diana has become involved in the Chester Diocese. Sir Peter Morrison was the Tory MP for Chester and his abuse of children was facilitated by a number of professional people – and even more people knew what he was doing but did nothing. Dafydd’s toxic influence was present in the area – Dafydd used to hold clinics at the Grosvenor Nuffield Hospital in Chester, the north Wales paedophile gang operated in Cheshire and the Courts in Chester were riddled with corruption and doing favours for the paedophile gang. John Allen owned a children’s home in Cheshire. It was recently revealed that a former Bishop of Chester abused children for many years.

Diana is married to John Forrest whose wiki entry describes him as a ‘UK production creative’ who has ‘made significant contributions to the UK broadcast production scene since 1970’. He currently presents Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2 and The Daily Service on BBC Radio 4. Forrest was a founder member of staff with BBC Radio Manchester. In 1973 John Forrest joined the establishing staff at LBC Radio in London as features producer and later as Deputy Head of Programmes. Whilst there he invented the character of Mr Nasty for the children’s phone-in programme Jellybone. Mr Nasty became an instant success….

Forrest worked for several years as a Researcher/Arranger with Thames Television in London. In the late 1970s he became programme director with the London-based ‘Arts Centre Group’ where his production credits included work with Cliff Richard. Forrest re-joined the BBC as a network radio producer in 1981. Following a number of television series that he produced for BBC Two, Forrest joined the production staff of ‘Songs of Praise’. His production from the Millennium Stadium on 2 Jan 2000 became the largest ever ‘Songs of Praise’ programme, with an attending live audience of 60,000, a choir of 6,000 and 100 Welsh harps assembled for the occasion.

Dr Rosalind Furlong is a Top Doctor – precisely a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS. She has been a Trustee of the Mildmay since 2004.

The Prebendary Ronald Swan is an Anglican priest who has served on the Board since 2008. He is also Chairman of the Executive Council of the Friends of Mildmay, a position he has held for the last 10 years. He has a long association and concern for pastoral care which has found expression in chaplaincy work and training of clergy.

Anna Turco is a dual trained RGN and specialist community public health nurse with 27 years clinical experience.  An advanced nurse practitioner, CBT and NET therapist, a Freedom Programme faciliator and training provider for ‘Toxic Trio’ – her background includes A&E, mental health, substance misuse and addictions, domestic abuse, prison liasion, safeguarding vulnerable adults and children, out of hours GP service and family drug and alcohol court for Kent and Medway.

Anna Turco has spent a whole career watching the abuse and mistreatment of vulnerable people and the welfare system colluding with this.

The Mildmay has snared a few big names to act as Patrons.

Dame Judi Dench has been a supporter and Patron of Mildmay for many years. Dame Judi says that ‘Long-term HIV care is proving more challenging and complex than we ever imagined. Mildmay helps to bring new hope to thousands caught up in the continuing HIV crisis. Not only does it provide the UK with a facility for specialist rehabilitation and capacity-building training, but also supports inspiring treatment and education programmes across East Africa.I urge you to join me in supporting their vital work.’

Dame Judi is Patron of the St James’s Singers, en elite choir. Vice-Presidents of the St James’s Singers include Professor Robert Bluglass and his Top Doctor wife Kerry, who must know that her husband concealed a paedophile gang.

Anita Dobson, another Patron, is an actor and singer. She was of course Ange from EastEnders, Dirty Den’s wife. She is married to founder member of Queen, Brian May. May’s friend and fellow band member Freddie Mercury died of complications resulting from AIDS in Nov 1991. Mercury knew that he was HIV positive in 1987 – it was alleged that he consulted a Harley Street specialist regarding his concerns that he had contracted HIV in 1986.

Anthony Furlong is a consultant architect for Sheppard Robson. He is also president of the City Property Association. Anthony is one of the Mildmay’s newest patrons but has known about the Mildmay for a while – he is married to Dr Ros Furlong. So which does the Mildmay value most, the clinical skills of Top Doctor Ros, or the global capitalism of her husband?

Lord Ian McColl is a Patron of the Mildmay!

Patron Humphrey Norrington retired as Vice-Chairman of Barclays Bank in 1993 and has since taken on several posts at not-for-profit organisations after his career in an industry totally devoted to profit. Humphrey is married to Frances and they are both active members of their local Anglican church.

The Mildmay also boast of Sir Cliff Richard as a Patron. Sir Cliff has supported Mildmay since its early days, helping to raise awareness as well as funds for its work. Sir Cliff was of course famously furious in 2014 when the police let it be known in the most public way possible that he was under investigation for sexual abuse by helpfully allowing the BBC to film outside of his Berkshire house as they rifled through his undies. Cliff was at his other house at the time – the one in the Algarve, a favourite location for very wealthy Brits who might have cause to avoid the police. Police officers sent the BBC an aerial photograph of Sir Cliff’s home the night before the raid, so that the BBC ‘knew how to find it’. Which suggests that the police have got one hell of a sense of humour. Probably as a result of all the time and money that they have spent trying to nail celebrity molesters, only to see the cases collapse in court and the witnesses kill themselves in the aftermath.

Another Patron is Linda Robson, an actress best known for ‘Birds Of A Feather’. In Nov 2014, Linda was a part of Gareth Malone’s ‘All Star Choir’ who released a cover version of Wake Me Up to raise money for Children In Need. Linda joined Mildmay for their appearance at the Lord Mayor’s Show in London in 2016, which was part of their 150th anniversary celebrations.

Canon Roger Royle, another Patron, is an Anglican priest, broadcaster and writer. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1962 and his first curacy was in Portsea, Portsmouth. During his career he served as Conduct and Senior Chaplain of Eton College. On leaving Eton in 1979 he became a freelance broadcaster, speaker and journalist working mainly for BBC radio and television and IPC magazines, while serving as a non-stipendiary priest. He also began working as a promoter of the preventative medicine campaign for ‘Save the Children’ – a charity with which Princess Anne was famously associated, which is now receiving a great deal of bad publicity. As well as presenting his own TV series, Roger has hosted BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’ and been a regular contributor to radio including Pause for Thought. So he must be a mate of John Forrest’s.

In 1990 Roger was honoured by the then Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie with a Lambeth Degree in recognition for his work in media. He is now a Canon Emeritus of Southwark Cathedral and in November 2016 he became Hon. Chaplain to the Lord Mayor of London. Southwark Social Services sent a great many children in their care to children’s homes in north Wales and continued to send them even after complaints of serious abuse. Dafydd’s mate Dr Jim Birley from the Maudsley – who was President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists as well as of the BMA – established the Southwark Association for Mental Health and was mates with Lord David Ennals (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’). Ennals was a Minister in the Home Office and Secretary of State for the DHSS, as well as being a senior figure in MIND during the many years whilst MIND concealed the criminality of Dafydd and the paedophiles in north Wales (see post ‘MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course’).

Patron Donald Steel is Associate Director of Johnson Associates and is responsible for crisis communications, strategy and business development. In March 2011 the BBC in house magazine Ariel informed readers that Steel, who had been at the BBC 22 years and had variously worked as a local radio presenter and producer, press officer and for 11 years as the BBC’s Chief Media Spokesman. He orchestrated the BBC response to events ranging from the murder of Jill Dando to the Hutton Inquiry and served under four DGs. Steel maintained his links to the BBC after he left their employment, remaining in an advisory role.

So Donald Steel is the person who ensured that Jimmy Savile’s decades of sex offending never became public knowledge. Should the Mildmay find itself in a position in which they would rather something was not made public, Donald could be relied upon to keep it out of the media. Likewise if the Mildmay wanted a bit of good PR – for example if Helen Taylor-Thompson wanted to claim to be a spy who was still keeping wartime secrets – Donald would be in an excellent position to make that happen.

The people involved with the Mildmay remind me a bit of the Rev Nicky Gumbel and those around him who were behind the Alpha course. They were very affluent professional people but quite evangelical and they attracted similar people into the Church. It really wowed other church goers – the thing that was always said about Nicky Gumbel’s church was ‘there’s a row of Porches outside’. That section of society don’t tend to go to church. Brown told me that the Alpha course was reputed to be homophobic. I had been invited to go along to one at the time and the first few sessions were very sound, discussing issues of power, capitalism and internationalism, but Brown was right – towards the end there was a very strong element of rigid notions regarding gender roles and yes, homophobia.

Now for a bit more history. Someone helpfully sent me a link to a Welsh psychiatrist called William Rees-Thomas a few days ago and asked me whether he was linked to Gwynne the lobotomist or Dafydd.

Rees-Thomas was born in 1887 to a Welsh farming family near Senny Bridge in Breconshire. He was educated at the County School at Brecon and he won scholarships to University College, Cardiff and Charing Cross Hospital. He graduated in 1909. By 1912 Rees-Thomas’s interest had turned to psychiatry and his first substantive appointment was that of medical officer and pathologist at the East Sussex County Mental Hospital, Hellingly. He acquired the recently instituted Diploma of Psychological Medicine of Cambridge University and the older certificate of the Medico-Psychological Association.

In the absence of a special institution for ‘mental defectives’ in Sussex, Hellingly Hospital cared for many such patients. Rees-Thomas’s first published article was on ‘Syphilis Among Mental Defectives’. Which suggests that there was a lot of it about. Perhaps due to that long tradition of various people sexually exploiting other more vulnerable people – Rees-Thomas will have known how common this was but it was probably the mental defectives who took the rap for it. Rees-Thomas took up this branch of psychiatry as his speciality. In 1914 Moss Side Hospital near Liverpool opened as a state institution for ‘criminal and violent’ mental defectives, and Rees-Thomas was appointed its first medical superintendent. So Moss Side started its life as it ended it – a dreadful brutal institution which housed the pathologised victims of unscrupulous people (see post ‘Security, Security’).

Within a few months of Rees-Thomas beginning his job as superintendent, the buildings of Moss Side were taken over for use as a war hospital, mainly for the treatment of neurosis and ‘shell shock’. Rees-Thomas left for active service in the RAMC.

Rees-Thomas returned to Moss Side in 1919, but within a short time the use of the hospital was yet again changed and he was transferred with his patients to Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire which, having been built as a second Broadmoor, was now allocated to ‘mental defectives’ needing special security. It is claimed that ‘over the next twelve years Rees-Thomas developed the hospital on progressive lines, with full occupational and recreational facilities, so that its reputation stood as high as that of any psychiatric hospital in the country’.

This was probably simply not true. Every institution with a diabolical reputation stresses that at some point in the past it was a model of forward thinking and enlightenment. Someone e mailed me the other day after they discovered the joys of the North Wales Hospital Historical Society, which is not a historical society but rather an online social forum for the former staff of the North Wales Hospital, Denbigh. Their shared memories are hilarious – not only is there a total disregard for patient confidentiality as named patients from not that long ago are openly discussed, but of course everything was just great out there. Gwynne the lobotomist and Dafydd don’t get a mention, neither does anyone who was sexually exploited, physically assaulted or fleeced of their property whilst they were banged up, yet alone the folk who were imprisoned in the dungeon. Lobotomies are not remembered and neither is the notorious ‘aversion therapy’ for homosexuality which was taking place at Denbigh long after homosexuality was decriminalised.

The North Wales Hospital may have had high ideals when it was first built – as indeed did Broadmoor – but things went downhill a very long time ago. No-one who has worked at Denbigh – yet alone Rampton – for the last few decades could claim that those institutions led the way. They shamed the nation which was why people were demanding their closure as long ago as the 1950s.

In 1932 Rees-Thomas was appointed one of the two Medical Senior Commissioners of the Board of Control for Lunacy and Mental Deficiency – which at that time supervised the welfare of mental patients, inspected the mental hospitals and was directly responsible for the state institutions (later called ‘special hospitals’). His older colleague was Sir Hubert Bond, and together they encouraged the developments made possible by the Mental Treatment Act of 1930, such as the opening of psychiatric clinics and co-operation with local authority services, as well as the new physical methods of treatment, ie. lobotomy and other damaging irreversible ‘treatments’, which led to the deaths of more than a few patients.

After the disruption of WW II, Rees-Thomas was concerned with the changes connected with the inclusion of psychiatry in the NHS and then with ‘progressive’ developments such as community care and the informal admission of patients, foreshadowing the provisions of the 1959 Mental Health Act. Such developments are now written about as enlightening – yet informal patients at that time had almost as little choice and were treated as oppressively as detained patients. Conditions for everyone were nearly always appalling.

By this time the Commissioners of the Board of Control also held office in the Ministry of Health – Rees-Thomas, like his colleagues, felt that there was no longer a need for an independent Board of Control. The Royal (Percy) Commission agreed with this and the Board’s existence came to an end in 1960, when Rees-Thomas retired – long after the usual age.

Rees-Thomas had throughout taken an active part in the Royal Medico-Psychological Association and after serving as Vice-Chairman of its Mental Deficiency and Educational Committees, occupied the Presidential Chair, 1949- 1950. He served for several years,as the RMPA’s representative on the General Nursing Council. He was made an honorary member in 1955. Top Doctors do have a habit of turning up on influential nursing bodies.

In 1917 Rees-Thomas married Muriel Hodgson Jones, whom he had met whilst he worked at Moss Side. They had a son, Frederick Douglas Rees-Thomas and a daughter, Aelwyn Minette, who married Dr D.W. Taylor Roberts, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at St George’s Hospital. Aelwyn Minette Taylor-Roberts died in 2012 but all information about her has recently been removed from the internet, as has all info relating to her Top Doctor husband and indeed her brother Frederick. Now why might that be?

William Rees-Thomas died in 1978 – no doubt his son-in-law outlived him and may well have still wielded influence at St George’s when I worked there, 1989-91 and they were busy concealing the crimes of the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales as well as other serious criminality in south London.

Muriel died in 1935 and in 1948 Rees-Thomas married Ruth Darwin, a granddaughter of Charles Darwin. Like Rees-Thomas, Ruth Darwin was a Senior Commissioner of the Board of Control until 1949, having previously for many years been actively engaged in promoting the welfare of the ‘mentally defective’. In 1929, with the money from her father’s estate, Ruth founded the Darwin Trust to foster research into ‘mental defect, disease or disorder’. Ruth’s idea of promoting the welfare of people whom she judged to be mentally defective was to ensure that they didn’t breed. She was an advocate of eugenics and in 1932 she was appointed to the Brock Committee, a Parliamentary Committee Chaired by Sir Laurence Brock – the Chairman of the Board of Control – which produced the Brock Report that called for the forced sterilisation of mental defectives.

Sir Laurence’s son was the historian Michael Brock. Michael Brock spent most of his career at Oxford University, apart from a brief interlude in the 1970s when he slummed it at Exeter. In 1978 Brock took up the post of Warden of Nuffield College, Oxford, where he remained until his formal retirement in 1988, serving as PVC of the University from 1980. After retiring from Oxford, Brock served as warden of St George’s House, Windsor Castle, until 1993.

After their retirement William and Ruth Rees-Thomas lived at High Hackhurst in Surrey, where they devoted themselves to their garden, which was regularly open to the public. Ruth Rees-Thomas died in 1972 and William outlived her by six years.

Ruth Darwin’s mother, Lady Ida Darwin – who was married to Charles Darwin’s son Sir Horace Darwin – was co-founder of the ‘Cambridge Association for the Feeble-Minded’. Ida also helped to found the ‘Association for the Care of Girls’ along with other wives of Cambridge University dons in 1883. The group offered support to abused women and those drawn into sex work and helped them with training and getting back to other employment. Ida’s daughter said of her that she ‘realised the injustices they suffered in an ignorant and careless world. She suffered with them and there was awakened in her the deep convictions of the need for social and legislative reforms that guided her future course’. Ida’s work with the particularly vulnerable, ‘feeble-minded’ women inspired her to campaign for legislation, such as the  Mental Deficiency Act of 1913.

After the Mental Deficiency Act was passed, the ‘Cambridge Association for the Feeble-Minded’ merged with the ‘Cambridgeshire Voluntary Association for the Care of the Mentally Defective’ and became the ‘Central Association for Mental Welfare’ which eventually evolved into MIND. Ida was Chairman of the ‘Central Association for Mental Welfare’ for her entire working life and provided a room in her house for the administration of the group. Ida died in 1946. Her obituary in The Times was followed by a note describing her as ‘one of the pioneers in this country in the field of social work’.

Sadly, Ida’s legacy became completely corrupted.

In the late 19th century people with brain injury and single mothers were labelled ‘feeble minded’ and local authorities had to provide public asylums to house those individuals deemed to be ‘pauper lunatics’. (Pauper lunatics from north Wales had to go all the way to Liverpool before the North Wales Hospital began accepting them.) Fulbourn Asylum was opened in 1858 for the feeble-minded people of Cambridge.

In the 1960s, the East Anglia Regional Hospital Board chose a site next to the Fulbourn mental hospital for a new hospital that was to cater for 250 residents with what was then called mental handicap – the aim was that the facilities would enable each resident to maximise his or her potential. At a meeting of the Regional Hospital Board in 1963 the Chairman Lady Adrian suggested that the new unit be named the ‘Ida Darwin Hospital’.

This sort of history matters. Those involved may be dead now, but it was not so long ago that they were teaching some of the people who are still advising on healthcare – because of the way in which medicine works, Top Doctors don’t disappear when they retire. They remain on hand to dispense words of wisdom and even if they are considered a bit batty and past it, they still wield influence. Then there are the family connections and networks – the ‘he did some terrible things but he was my grandfather/taught my dad/taught me’ etc. It serves to prevent some very abusive people and practices being challenged.

Most of the victims of Gwynne and Dafydd are dead – people didn’t tend to live too long once they were on the receiving end of help from those two – but occasionally one stumbles across them. In 1999 I was working in a very substandard elderly people’s home on Anglesey and I met a lady who had been lobotomised – probably by Gwynne. This realisation was followed by an even worse  one – that this ‘old lady’ wasn’t that old, she was the youngest person in the home. She was there because after someone had taken a pick to her brain she couldn’t look after herself, so she’d been hidden in a questionable home on Anglesey. Of course lobotomy hasn’t been practised for years – er, so how did that lady end up in that state then?

At another home on Anglesey I met an old lady who always called the care assistants ‘the attendants’ – so she had obviously been in the sort of institution that was run entirely on the lines of the old asylums. The charmers who ran this home helpfully explained to me that I wouldn’t get any sense out of her because she was a ‘burnt out schizophrenic’ (whatever that is). The man who owned the establishment in which the burnt out schizophrenic was housed was a business partner of Dafydd’s. The manager of the home had been thrown off the mental health nursing degree at Bangor University…

Even if staff have been trained in an enlightened institution there is usually not the scope in the NHS to allow them to practice properly. There was a nurse at the Hergest Unit who had trained in psychotherapy at Fulbourn Hospital – she was the only person in the mental health services in north west Wales who actually had any knowledge of psychotherapy at all, although the others all claimed to be practising  this – and had she been allowed to practice without people demanding that her priority had to be to make excuses for Dafydd and the paedophile gang she would have really achieved something, but no-one would let her.

The former Minister for Public Services in Wales has been in the news this week. As the allegations of bullying on the part of various people in or advising the Welsh Gov’t continue to fly, the latest person to be named and in turn to make counter-allegations is Leighton Andrews, the former AM for the Rhondda, 2003-16.

Leighton was born in Cardiff and brought up in Barry until the age of 11. He went to UCNW (Bangor University) and then did an MA at the University of Sussex.

Andrews was Parliamentary Officer for Age Concern, 1982–84; UK Campaign Director, UN International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, 1984–87; Head of Public Affairs for the BBC, 1993–96, based in London and responsible for the BBC’s relations with the UK Parliament and with the EU institutions. He was then a lecturer at Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies immediately prior to his election as the AM for Rhondda. He was Minister for Children, Education and Learning, 2009-11; Minister for Education and Skills, 2011-13; Minister for Public Services, 2014-16. After he lost his seat in 2016 Andrews was appointed as Professor of Practice in Public Service, Leadership and Innovation, at Cardiff Business School.

Andrews was a Liberal in the 1980s and stood as the Liberal Alliance candidate for Gillingham in the 1987 General Election. On returning to Wales to live in 1996, Leighton was appointed to the Board of Tai Cymru  – Housing for Wales – by the Conservative Secretary of State for Wales, William Hague.

Leighton was co-founder of the Yes for Wales campaign for the 1997 referendum. During the referendum campaign he produced a paper with Gareth Hughes, then of the Welsh Federation of Housing Associations (now known as Community Housing Cymru) and now of ITV Wales, arguing that savings could be found to liberate more funding for housing from the Government’s proposal to abolish Tai Cymru as part of the devolution settlement.

Leighton defected to the Labour Party following the successful referendum campaign for a Welsh Assembly. Michael Meadowcroft wrote an article on his blog in 2003 after experiencing the trauma of seeing his former Liberal colleague Leighton embracing Blair’s New Labour authoritarianism. Meadowcroft expressed his confusion and sense of betrayal. Well Leighton’s putting the boot into Carwyn Jones now, so perhaps he’s been working as an undercover Lib Dem since he joined Labour.

A lot of people in Wales do not like Leighton Andrews. When Andrews was Education Minister I watched Gareth Rees, a particularly obnoxious Professor of Education from Cardiff University, state in an address to a conference that education in Wales was doomed until the world was rid of Leighton Andrews. At the time I just presumed that this was yet another old fart feeling threatened by Leighton because Leighton had made some very rude noises about the deadwood that was and still is clogging up Welsh universities. I have a friend who alleges that Gareth Rees plagiarised his work and I never witnessed Gareth Rees being anything other than rude and dismissive to absolutely everyone, so I assumed that Gareth Rees knew that his days were numbered. How are you getting on with your colleague the Professor of Practice, Leadership and Innovation then Prof Rees?

However the conundrum is that although Leighton Andrews always said the right things about clearing out the paedophiles’ friends and other dross that have rendered Wales’s public institutions sclerotic, everything that Leighton actually did assisted them. He famously altered the funding for book contracts given out by the University of Wales Press without consulting or informing anyone, which resulted in the cancelling of contracts to a group of capable young researchers because the hopeless old gits wanted the funding for themselves in an attempt to make their CVs less embarrassing than they were.

Looking at Leighton’s CV, it is clear that he has been in positions throughout his career in which he will have been party to the activities of the paedophiles’ friends. The paedophiles’ friends ran Bangor University whilst Leighton was a student there, they colonised Age Concern and the Welsh housing associations and old Savile was busy at the BBC whilst Leighton worked there. Furthermore Leighton was in the Liberal Party – until he realised that he could become an AM in the Welsh Assembly if he defected – so he’ll have known about Cyril Smith, Jeremy Thorpe, the activities of Lord Rennard and all the other fun people discussed in my post ‘He Knows Where The Bodies Are Buried’. When Leighton was part of the Alliance he won’t have been able to avoid Dr Death. And Leighton worked for William Hague just at the time when Hague was orchestrating the Waterhouse cover-up.

Leighton is keeping quiet about an awful lot – perhaps he is about to write the best expose that the world has yet seen.

One of Leighton’s rudest speeches which resulted in much gnashing of teeth in Welsh universities contained a few insults levelled at the Governors of Welsh universities – insults which quite accurately described the prevailing situation. Leighton would know because he is married to one of them, namely Ann Beynon.

Ann Beynon, like Leighton, was a student at UCNW and years later sat on the Council of Bangor University. She was the first female President of the Students’ Union, helped found NUS Wales and ran its first gay rights campaign. Ann Beynon is a few years older than me. When I was a student at UCNW the Student’s Union was having its strings pulled by the paedophiles’ friends (see post ‘Just A Language Divide?’) and nothing will have changed from when Ann was a student. The Depts of Psychology and Social Work were employing people who had worked with the paedophile gang and were educating people who would work with the gang after they graduated. Dafydd was deciding what went on in the Psychology Dept and Gwynne the lobotomist was sitting in the Student Health Centre. Sir Charles Evans the Top Doctor and mate of Gwynne’s was the Principal of UCNW (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’) and Mary Wynch, whose life was destroyed by Dafydd and the paedophiles (see posts ‘Making Legal History – The Mary Wynch Case’ and ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’), will still have been working in the Agriculture Dept when Ann Beynon was a student.

I have no idea what Ann Beynon’s gay rights campaign involved, but by the time I was a student at Bangor even students were raising eyebrows at the activities of the Gay Soc. Gay Soc was very strong at UCNW and had links with the gay rights movement nationally. This might have been a problem in a town – and indeed in a university –  in which a sex trafficking ring was operating which targeted boys (as well as girls) and which was not a million miles away from Chester, where some gay men had walked away from the local branch of CHE because they believed that it was a front for paedophilia.

Not that it held Ann Beynon back – but then it wouldn’t, ignoring or assisting the paedophile gang in north Wales was the route to career success. Just look at Ann’s biography:

Ann is a former member of the Welsh Language Board and of the Board of the National Film and Television School. She was Business Development Director at the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation and previously Head of Political and International Affairs at S4C. In 1998 Ann joined BT and in 1999 she was a member of the Royal Commission on the Reform of the House of Lords under the chairmanship of Lord John Wakeham – John Wakeham was Peter Morrison’s boss when Morrison was Minister for Energy. Ann Beynon is a former Chair of Business in the Community in Wales and was the Prince of Wales’s Community Ambassador in Wales.

Wherever there was a paedophiles’ friend, there was Ann Beynon.

Beynon became BT’s Director for Wales and retired from this post in July 2015. She is now Senior Adviser Welsh Affairs for Severn Trent Water. Ann was approached for this role by the CEO of Severn Trent, Liz Garfield – she used to work for Ann at BT. Ann is Chair of the Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University, a non-executive director of the Farmers’ Union of Wales Insurance Services Ltd and a Director of the social media company Cwmni Digidol. She has helped establish an Alliance Française in Wales. She consults and lectures on leadership and corporate social responsibility – an example to us all! She Chairs the Cardiff Capital Region Transition Board. She was Equality and Human Rights Commissioner for Wales, 2010-16, having spent a lifetime ignoring the most appalling inequality and a sex trafficking gang.

I used to know a relative of Ann Beynon’s who loathed her and repeatedly told me that all she wanted was a peerage ‘and she’ll bloody well get one too’. Ann, you’ll be among friends when you finally get through the doors, they’ll be keeping your seat warm for you. You can slumber away in there along with the rest of them who failed to stop a bunch of sex offenders who were murdering the witnesses to their crimes.

I was watching an old clip of Spitting Image yesterday which featured Leon Brittan hosting an episode of ‘The Price Is Right’. After he sold a knighthood for the price of a job for Thatcher’s son, the Leon Brittan puppet gave someone a peerage ‘for keeping your mouth shut’…

In 1987 Central Television’s series The Cook Report devoted an episode to child porn. Roger Cook – an investigative reporter who acquired a cult following as a result of being continually beaten up by gangsters when he confronted them – made his way to Amsterdam where he purchased child porn and confronted the man who flogged it to him who then called the boys from out the back. Roger Cook received the customary violent assault and a threat to kill him. The same episode featured an interview with Supt Iain Donaldson, the Head of Obscene Publications at Scotland Yard in which Donaldson took receipt of a list of names of child pornographers which Donaldson claimed to have never seen before.

It has now been admitted that the Obscene Publications Branch was corrupt and, surprise surprise, was employing paedophiles who were passing info to their mates. I have found on the internet a submission to the IICSA from someone who worked on that programme – his statement explains that the list of names handed over to the Obscene Publications Branch was a double bluff for the cameras because they knew that Scotland Yard had been infiltrated by the gangsters and they wanted to put out a bit of propaganda to throw the bent coppers off the scent.

Roger Cook’s programme also mentioned Oliver Brooke, the Professor of Paediatrics at St George’s Hospital Medical School, who in 1986 was jailed for the possession of child porn. The week before the programme was filmed, on 11 May 1987 the Lord Chief Justice Lord Lane had released Brooke on appeal after comparing his stash of child porn with collecting cigarette cards. Oliver Brooke was a major figure in a pan-European child porn ring.

I can understand that in the case of investigating serious organised crime which is being facilitated by professional people – including members of the judiciary – the police may have to employ techniques such as double bluffs etc. But two months after Roger Cook made that programme about the Evils of Child Porn with the film producers and police adopting techniques of subterfuge, Dafydd and the paedophile gang made a well planned attempt to frame and imprison me – an attempt which not only involved Dafydd, Tony Francis and a lying junior doctor, but also Risley Remand Centre and the Mental Health Act Commission (see post ‘Workers Play Time). One of the members of the paedophile gang who were desperate to have me banged up was Sir Peter Morrison, Thatcher’s friend. At the time that the Cook Report was filmed, Morrison was Deputy Chairman of the Tory Party. By the time that I was sitting in Bangor Police Station at the centre of a fit-up attempt, Morrison was the Minister for Energy.

That was more than thirty years ago. Dafydd, Lucille Hughes and some of those who facilitated the paedophile gang are now well into their 80s and are now running the biggest ‘substance abuse charity’ in Wales.

As part of the Cook investigation, the journos placed an advert for child porn in ‘Forum’ magazine and were contacted by people flogging child porn. ‘Forum’ was not a child porn mag but it wasn’t too fussy about the sort of small ads that it accepted. One person who was on the Editorial Board of Forum was Dr Philip Cauthery. Philip Cauthery was the student doctor at Aston University whilst Brown was a student there. Aston was alive with first hand accounts of Cauthery’s negligence and craziness – at the time Aston had the highest rate of student suicides in the UK and many staff and students attributed this to Cauthery. The VC of Aston was Sir Freddie Crawford, a friend of Thatcher’s…

There’s no need for the IICSA or for ‘historical investigations’ into child sex abuse. All that has to happen is for the security services – who harassed Brown and me, who put us under surveillance and dressed up as an assortment of fuckwits to variously cause us problems or pretend to befriend us because they were protecting Dafydd and the paedophiles rather than us – to hand over their material, including all those undercover recordings that they made as they bugged everyone in north Wales. Sadly it is too late for the people who were found dead.

One person who was ‘consulted’ for the Roger Cooke programme was Ray Wyre, who in the 1980s was the go-to person for advice on the treatment of sex offenders. There is a lot of speculation on the internet regarding whether Ray Wyre was a paedophile himself – if he was, he was just one of the many who chose to work in the field of mental health/sex therapy.

I do not know whether Ray Wyre was a child molester or not but he definitely knew who was protecting abusers. Wyre’s Gracewell Clinic was in Moseley in Birmingham – a few miles from the Reaside Clinic, run by Robert Bluglass. Wyre established the Gracewell Clinic in 1988 – the year in which Bluglass performed his cover-up of the criminality of Dafydd, Tony Francis and Gwynedd Social Services.

Wyre left school at 15 and joined the Royal Navy. After leaving, Wyre embarked on theological training, which involved a stint as a volunteer warden at a working men’s hospital. This experience helped him decide against ordination, and in the late 1970s, he was taken on as a trainee probation officer at Winson Green prison in Birmingham, where his first patient was a sex offender. From 1981 to 1986, Wyre worked with category-A inmates at Albany prison on the Isle of Wight, pioneering group therapy for sex offenders.

The Gracewell Clinic shut down in 1993 – the year following the firebombing which killed five witnesses to the north Wales paedophile ring (see post ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’) – the year of numerous events designed to silence the complaints into the north Wales gang and suppress investigations. Wyre set up another clinic in Surrey, the Wolvercote Clinic which shut down in 2002. Wyre died in 2008.

Wyre was the only person in the UK offering residential treatment for paedophiles who want to change their behaviour. There is still no such provision. What there is, is a great deal of hot air, of politicians banging on, of tweets and campaigns. But nothing to address the problem.

The 1987 Roger Cook programme named and confronted a rather sad man with a thing about school girls who was living in poverty and forced him to burn his collection of photos on camera. If Roger had paid a visit to north Wales – or indeed to St George’s Hospital just two years later – I and others could have taken him to see some of the people organising the supply of such material. But I don’t think that Roger really wanted to know.

The Editor of that episode of the Cook Report was Mike Townson. Townson’s CV suggests that he too knew a great deal about organised crime which he did not make TV programmes about.

Carwyn Jones celebrated International Wimmin’s Day earlier this week. Carwyn joined all those affluent comfortable people who are Speaking Out about female oppression and sexual violence and stated that he would be working with Chwarae Teg to fight for equality. Chwarae Teg is a Third sector organisation which was founded by paedophiles’ friend Jane Hutt. It has certainly provided a good living for Jane Hutt and her mates but it hasn’t done much to achieve equality. One the same day that Carwyn made his statement, the trial of a man accused of murdering a woman in Denbigh was told that the young woman had asked for help from the police several times before she was killed but the police failed to respond.

Carwyn is a barrister- he should probably be prosecuting Hutt et al as accessories to crime rather than ‘working with them’.

Last week I received a message from Nicola Kingston – the nurse who blew the whistle on the abuse of patients at Tawel Fan – telling me that she was going to be on BBC News Wales last Thursday, so I put a notice up on this blog to let everyone know. I don’t have a TV so I couldn’t tune in to watch, but yesterday I received an e mail from a reader who told me that Nicola wasn’t featured. I don’t know why this was, but I know that TV crews always film a lot more footage than they use and that people who have been filmed are not kept informed if there is a decision made not to use their bit. I also know that anything involving a TV expose of the activities of the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales tends to have the plug pulled on it suddenly and without notice.

The person who e mailed me was very disappointed that Nicola wasn’t on TV – he is someone else who has suffered at the hands of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and their ‘mental health services’ and he desperately wants to see the way in which patients are being neglected and mistreated given media coverage. He told me that people don’t seem to care what is happening to people until it happens to them.

It’s a bit more sinister than that. Most members of the human race are actually quite decent and if they witnessed what passes for ‘mental health care’ at the Betsi – or indeed in many other places – they would be horrified. They really do not know how bad it is – when I first started this blog, I received a number of e mails telling me that they would not have believed my blog had they not witnessed such events themselves. I was in the same boat – I had no idea of what was happening to many young adults with learning disabilities until I started reading the blogs written by people like Sara Ryan, Mark Neary and Finola Moss. It is so bad that one’s first response is bound to be ‘that’s got to have been a one-off’ or ‘there’s got to be exaggeration here’. There isn’t, this is what is happening to vulnerable people at the hands of the nation’s welfare services – it is grim, yet it is only very rarely covered by the mainstream media. Sara Ryan revealed the deaths of hundreds of patients with mental health problems and learning disabilities at Southern Health. People knew that was happening but until Sara began her blog after the death of her own son it was ignored. Sara drew attention to it, received media coverage, was insulted by the GMC and now the world has moved on once more. Sara is a sociologist who specialises in learning disability who works at Oxford University and who spent years fighting to have her son’s death investigated – that is what it takes to even get heard.

The other problem is the constant stream of PR and propaganda that follows any suggestion that things are not what they should be in the UK welfare services. I have mentioned that after I blogged about research fraud in cancer research, suddenly high profile people were queuing up to advertise the benefits of the very things that I had exposed. This phenomenon has a long tradition in north Wales – every criticism of any domain overseen by the paedophiles’ friends results in a favourable media interview with the paedophiles’ friends and a venomous attack upon the person who has dared mention the criminality or the harm that they or other people had suffered.

After I wrote my post ‘I Know Nuzzing’ which detailed the backgrounds and networks of all those in Gwynedd County Council who had stood by whilst the paedophile gang operated within the children’s homes run by that Council, Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals appeared in the north Wales media explaining that he was going to hold a concert with his super star friends to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS. Gruff Rhys is the son of the former Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council, Ioan Bowen Rees, who was discussed in my post.

There’s been a bit more free PR in the Welsh media over the past few days provided by people connected to those discussed on this blog. Paul Jones gave an interview with his bad boy made good story. Paul grew up in Denbigh and reminisced over how hopeless he was at Denbigh High School, that there was nothing to do if you were living in Denbigh when he was a teenager, so he never expected to find himself hanging out with celebs like he is now that he’s made it big as an actor. To what does Paul attribute his good fortune? The youth theatre group at Theatre Clwyd in Mold. Theatre Clwyd has featured on this blog – it is best described as the paedophiles’ friends folly.

Theatre Clwyd is a very impressive Theatre in a very small town and the person behind it was T.M. Hadyn Rees, the then Chief Exec of Clwyd County Council (see post ‘Ain’t Nothing Clean – Not Even The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists’). Theatre Clwyd has periodic crash crises and on many such occasions, after the Theatre had been ‘rescued’, there was a cash crisis at Clwyd County Council. Theatre Clwyd is really great – I’ve been there myself – but whilst Hadyn Rees was busting a gut to establish that Theatre and keep it going, the coffers of the Council were inexplicably empty and there were bugger all services for local people , despite at one point the council tax being sky high. There was also a paedophile gang operating in the children’s homes and Dafydd’s mates on Clwyd County Council and Clwyd Health Authority ensured that Dafydd was able to continue to unlawfully imprison victims of the gang in the dungeon at the North Wales Hospital without any questions being asked.

Paul Jones – and the even more famous Rhys Ifans, who grew up in Ruthin and went to school in Mold and was a friend of Gruff Rhys – have done very nicely out of Theatre Gwynedd, as have a few folk who enjoyed going along to watch the productions (as I did). But a lot of people paid a very great price for Theatre Clwyd. It’s called democracy Paul – a vicious paedophile gang being ignored because the Chief Exec of the County Council wants a theatre is not worth it. If you and Rhys wanted careers as actors there would have been a better way than that.

I note that Paul Jones came from Denbigh. Employment for the whole town was provided by the North Wales Hospital and when it closed – whilst Paul was at school – there was no other work. That was why no-one in that town – or any politician who stood for election there – would say a word about the rampant abuse that was going on in the institution. They should have. Hundreds of people were incarcerated, many of them illegally and a number of people were never seen again. The answer was to have admitted what was going on and at the same time press for continued development of the town, so that it would have a future that was not dependent upon Dafydd and a paedophile gang. A theatre in a neighbouring town providing titbits for a few fortunate people and their friends and relatives was not the answer.

More PR for the Betsi and the paedophiles’ friends was provided by BBC News Wales Online in the guise of a feature on Rhiannon Tudor Edwards. Rhiannon is Co-Director of the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation at Bangor University, along with Dyfrig Hughes. Rhiannon is well-known because she lost her sight when she was young and is accompanied by a guide dog. Profiles of Rhiannon always mention her sterling work in health economics and summarise it as Rhiannon and Dyfrig researching and advising as to how the NHS can obtain ‘best value for money’. One glimpse of the NHS in north Wales – or indeed anywhere else – suggests that Rhiannon and Dyfrig are not dispensing very good advice, or if they are their advice is being ignored.

Rhiannon did her PhD at York University and lectured in health economics at Liverpool University. She also had an Honorary position with Liverpool Health Authority.  She and Dyfrig were ‘head hunted’ – I’d be interested to know by whom and why – to set up their unit at Bangor in 1998. Rhiannon works closely with a number of UKCRC registered Trials Units. She has worked in collaboration with trials of public health and psychosocial interventions and lead the economic evaluation of a range of trials in dementia care and parenting programmes.

Rhiannon  has served terms on the MRC  Steering Group on the economic returns of biomedical research in the UK, Wales Office for Research and Development in Health and Social Care Grants Committee and, with colleagues at Bangor, supported  the NICE  Collaborating  Centre  for  Cancer.

Rhiannon’s bread and butter is reassuring everyone that what is failing so dismally and so lethally in NHS Wales is actually a rip-roaring success. Wales has some of the worst health outcomes in Europe – and Rhiannon and Dyfrig have been telling NHS Wales what to fund for 20 years now. Rhiannon has been at the heart of giving the green light to numerous ‘interventions’ which do not work and which only ever found their way into the clinic because of the manipulation of data by everybody involved.

Rhiannon’s work on dementia care was carried out with Prof Bob Woods. Bob Woods was one of the paedophiles’ friends who worked in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and the Institute of Psychiatry before going to Bangor (see post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’). He led the clinical psychology training programme in north Wales whilst it was based at the North Wales Hospital and he knew what was happening to patients. Bob Woods is an advisor to the Betsi on dementia care – he has advised on dementia care in north Wales for years. The result was Tawel Fan. Presumably Bob had OK’d the ‘care’ – elderly people crawling around naked on floors covered in urine and faeces, one of them with an untreated broken arm – and Rhiannon had reassured everyone that it was value for money.

Rhiannon’s work on ‘parenting’ was carried out with Judy Hutchings – Hutchings was named ‘woman of the year’ in Wales a few years ago. Hutchings was a child psychologist working in a region in which a paedophile gang operated through the welfare services, of course she was woman of the year, look who was sitting in the Senedd at the time – there was Jane Hutt, Brian Gibbons, Rhodri and Julie Morgan etc. Hutchings’s parenting work – ‘Incredible Years’ – was also going horribly wrong but that wasn’t mentioned at the Glittering Awards Ceremony. I knew someone who’s young nephew’s dad died of cancer and the little boy’s mum was horrified to receive a letter from a member of Hutchings’s team offering her the ‘parenting programme’ because her little boy was distressed and they wondered if she and her ‘ex husband’ had been aggressive in front of the little boy. The boy’s mum contacted the Incredible Years chumps and explained that her late – rather than ex – husband had recently died slowly of cancer which was why she was a single parent and probably why her son was distressed.

I and a colleague attended a public lecture of Rhiannon’s a few years ago. The lecture was one of a series which had been organised by Richard Tranter, a Top Doctor at the Hergest Unit who was spearheading the propaganda war on behalf of the paedophiles’ friends at the time after Health Minister Edwina Hart had abolished the NW Wales NHS Trust. Richard later scuttled off to New Zealand when even Rhiannon and Dyfrig could no longer disguise what was happening at the Hergest Unit.

Rhiannon’s lecture was certainly interesting. It was advertised as a lecture on health economics. There was a slide of Rhiannon’s dad – a Top Doctor – who, as Rhiannon explained, inspired her to take up a career in health economics on the grounds that the NHS Must Always Be Protected. Then there were a number of slides of Rhiannon out riding on her horse with her friend Linda Dykes, a Top Doctor from the A&E Dept of Ysbyty Gwynedd. For many years now Linda has ignored the sight of psych patients being met with aggression or refused treatment by the staff the A&E Dept. Then Rhiannon made a number of statements about NHS funding and health economics that both I and my colleague noticed were wrong. We presumed that this was a minor slip up – but no, a number of other statements followed which were equally wrong. We both noticed that Rhiannon felt able to speak on matters completely outside of her experience without any qualifying comments.

The finale was questions from the audience. Both I and my colleague decided that we weren’t even going to go there. There were a lot of Top Doctors from Ysbyty Gwynedd in the audience who had lapped up Rhiannon’s uncritical praise of them and their work – and cooed over the photos of dad and Blind Woman On Horse – but one seemed a bit out of sorts and grumpily raised his hand. He told Rhiannon that he was a highly qualified man and he would decide what was best for his patients and he wanted to do lots of private work as well and why should he be told what to do by the bloody Welsh Gov’t. I resisted the temptation to yell out ‘because they pay you the best part of a hundred grand a year to serve the public you arrogant bastard’ – which was just as well because Rhiannon set him straight. Rhiannon explained that she will always support the NHS like her dad did before her, because the NHS was set up to Help The Poor and the Poor receive far more benefit from the NHS than everyone else. My colleague and I left before we threw up.

Rhiannon – the people who have done really well out of the NHS in north Wales are you and your colleagues, not The Poor. Every analysis has demonstrated that the more advantaged socio-economic groups gain far more from the NHS than do disadvantaged groups. The NHS institutionally discriminates against people with serious mental health problems and learning disabilities to such an extent that their life spans are decades shorter than other people. Poor people in every part of the UK die at a younger age than affluent people – and in some areas the gap is widening. Whilst you wrote papers with Bob Woods and Judy Hutchings, the ‘services’ that they provided trafficked young people into sex work.

Rhiannon is living proof that middle class people, even when they have disabilities, do rather better out of the welfare system than other people. Rhiannon is a health economist who has taken advantage of Gov’t support to provide her with assistance at work, both in terms of manpower (or it’s probably woman power) and hi tech equipment. I know a woman from Caernarfon with sight loss as severe as Rhiannon’s. She has been offered a guide dog but not a lot else. She has had no paid jobs since she left school at 16 other than ‘work experience’ schemes. Unlike Rhiannon she didn’t go to Atlantic College – one of the most expensive schools in Wales – and then do a degree. She went to Ysgol Sir Huw Owen in Caernarfon where she was so badly bullied for being blind that she seized every opportunity not to go to school. She ended up in the hands of the mental health services where yet more damage was inflicted upon her by some of those with whom Rhiannon works. She very nearly ended up in prison when she was younger as a result of trivial offences, but a lecturer from Bangor University who knew her socially made representation to the magistrates and offered to support her. She has spent the last ten years leading a very much more meaningful life than she ever would have if she had remained in the clutches of those whom Rhiannon has assessed as providing good value for money.

Jeremy Hunt has been fighting the tidal wave of propaganda himself this week. There is outrage that Hunt has offered NHS workers a 6% pay rise but in return has withdrawn a days holiday from them. Jeremy Corbyn is livid. I don’t think there is anything to worry about, I can tell the two Jeremys exactly what will happen. The NHS workers will take their pay rise and will all send in a sick note at a time convenient to them to ensure that they don’t lose their days holiday, they’ll be organising the campaign right now.

A Big Umbrella

Mail online has reported yet another case of the large scale sexual exploitation of teenaged girls who were ‘known to social services’, this time being targeted by gangs in Bradford and Keighley. It was reported that more than one hundred victims are now being ‘supported’ by the West Yorkshire police. One of the Mail’s columnists – I think it was Sarah Vine -penned a column that was what ‘Private Eye’ would describe as a ‘why oh why’ piece with a touch of Polly Filler. Vine robustly stated that people must stop blaming social workers for this sort of large scale sexual abuse, it is most definitely the fault of Asian men. No Sarah, it really IS the local authorities, particularly children’s services, that are the root of all this. As I have mentioned before on this blog, there were no Asian men involved in the north Wales child abuse scandal, but there were social workers, mental health services, Top Doctors and police officers involved – and scores of politicians and civil servants being told what was happening but not taking any action to stop it. Indeed, social workers and police officers were so determined to ensure that the supply of young people for exploitation continued that they removed children from the care of more capable parents and handed them over to inadequate, dishonest people who were known to be abusing children (please see posts ‘It’s All About Protecting Children’ and ‘Failings In Care – But Another Narrative Verdict’). Stop the racist poison Sarah – the welfare services are most definitely responsible for this problem and your husband’s colleagues have known about it for decades and have ignored it. Indeed the situation is so serious that Third sector organisations involved in the provision of welfare are also involved. BBC News Wales reported a few days ago that NCPCC Cymru had expressed their deep concerns regarding ‘children at risk of exploitation’ – yes that’s the same NSPCC who were told that Victoria Climbie was being abused but stated that ‘no further action’ was required, who then altered documentation in an attempt to cover their tracks after Victoria died, and the same NSPCC who hosted a ‘Helpline’ for the victims of the north Wales paedophile ring that was set up, staffed and supervised by the colleagues of the abusers themselves (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake…’). In the case of the north Wales abuse scandal furthermore, the paw prints of the Home Office itself was all over it. Not only in the guise of the Home Secretaries who were in office whilst the likes of me, Alison Taylor and Mary Wynch were raising concerns – ie. Willie Whitelaw, Leon Brittan, Douglas Hurd, David Waddington, Ken Baker, Ken Clarke and Michael Howard – but who were taking no action, but in other more direct ways. Bryn Estyn, the children’s home where the most appalling abuse of boys took place for decades, was originally a Home Office run establishment. The Home Office ran that place when some of the worst abusers were appointed to positions there. The Home Office was responsible for Risley Remand Centre and employed it’s Top Doctors, who were colluding with Dr Dafydd Alun Jones in the wrongful imprisonment of Mary Wynch and no doubt others. And of course the Home Office were overseeing some of the things for which Dafydd was given responsibility, such as the prescribing of certain drugs and the oversight of certain aspects of the Mental Health Act. The notorious Dr Donald Wayte who did and said some very odd things and whose wife now sits alongside Dafydd and Lucille Hughes – the paedophile’s friend – on the Board of CAIS was a pathologist employed by the Home Office. The Home Office certainly knew that all was not well in north Wales.

Someone else who knew about the abuse of children in care in north Wales but who never utters a word about this – although he could have gone public on numerous occasions because he knew that it was happening well before the Waterhouse Inquiry – has been in the news this week. That is Gareth Jones, Plaid leader of Conwy County Council and former Plaid AM for Aberconwy. Gareth has announced that he’s seeking to form a Cabinet of Plaid, Tory and Independent members. I read that Labour councillors have refused to join this Cabinet, which was probably very sensible of them.

In the wake of the recent huge fire at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh – where people who complained of being abused in children’s homes frequently ended up – I see that it’s been announced that part of the building is to be demolished, such was the extent of the fire damage. That should provide an opportunity for the authorities to carry out a forensic examination of the building before the wrecking ball is brought into action, because a lot of us who knew what went on in that place think that there could well be human remains out there. I received an e mail from a reader observing that the building was gutted by the fire with such ease that it was probably a fire hazard to the patients. He’s dead right there – and the hazard wasn’t entirely a result of the state of the older parts of the institution either. The hazard stemmed directly from staff putting patients in danger. When I was illegally incarcerated in Denbigh by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones during the winter of 86/87, on one occasion a manic patient set fire to the male dormitory. This was a locked ward – no doors were unlocked to let us out, there was no fire escape, we all remained locked in whilst nurses strived to put out the fire themselves. They were unable to do this and after about thirty minutes a fire engine turned up with a hose etc. We remained locked in and watched the firemen go in and out of the dorm extinguishing the fire. Had that fire got out of hand we’d all have been burnt to a crisp. There was no fire drill, no info of what we were to do in the event of a fire, not even any information that there was a fire- we only heard about it because another patient had witnessed the man start the fire and told the rest of us.

I’ve been researching the networks of the judges and lawyers who I’ve named on this blog as well as the networks of those we know and love in Gwynedd Social Services this week. I’ve also been correlating my own documentation with people mentioned in the Waterhouse Report. I’m digging up some very interesting things which I will be blogging about in detail soon. However, I think that I’ve solved yet another mystery. I have mentioned again and again on this blog how the lobotomist the dreadful Dr T. Gwynne Williams caused havoc at the Student Health Centre in Bangor University (which in those days was still known as UCNW) – there was scores of complaints and one student attempted suicide after an encounter with him. Yet no-one would challenge him. The lethal old bastard was invited back into the Student Health Centre again and again as students and their parents complained and as the Students’ Union made representation. Transparent lies were told about him by the dreadful Dr DGE Wood, the thoroughly corrupt GP who ran the Centre. Brown and me were initially told by Wood that Williams was an experienced psychotherapist who had enjoyed considerable success – when we demonstrated this to be obviously untrue, it was admitted that he ‘falls flat on his face when he has to talk to someone’ but that he was a whizz with medication. That was untrue as well, he was a LOBOTOMIST – no-one was told that, I only found it out years later from his obituary. But the lies continued – and Wood got really nasty when Brown and I demonstrated that Williams had altered documentation to try and cover his tracks. We were told that we were ‘not allowed’ to complain about him and when I went to see the University Registrar about it all, once more I was met with outrage and aggression. It was obviously so much more than a university not wanting to admit that it had stuffed up. But I have discovered something. Between 1982 and 1995, the President of the University was one Sir William Mars-Jones, a judge who has starred on this blog previously, the ‘leader’ and then Presiding Judge of the Chester and Wales Circuit, a Circuit alleged to be riddled with corruption. Mars-Jones was actually plain old Jones until he decided to embellish his name once he hit the big-time, but he was a local celeb, a farmer’s son from Denbighshire who’d gone to Aberystwyth University and had done well for himself. He had attended Denbigh High School and although after graduation he had a life in London, he retained many links to north Wales. Between 1962 and 1968 he was the Deputy Chairman of the Denbighshire Quarter Assizes. He was of the same vintage as Gwynne the lobotomist and they will definitely have known each other. Indeed they had something in common. Mars-Jones is the father of the novelist Adam Mars-Jones who is gay and Adam has written an account of life with his father – who was so homophobic that Adam describes him as a ‘homophobe’s homophobe’. The one thing that Denbigh was notorious for – as well as lobotomies – was ‘aversion therapy’ for homosexuality. They were very enthusiastic about it too and it continued there long after other institutions had stopped it. I have remarked on the blog previously how there seemed to be a great deal of confusion about homosexuality in north Wales until very recently – a vicious paedophile ring operating in the region which was targeting mainly teenaged boys was concealed by the very same people who stitched up poor Rev Emyr Owen because he was dangerously gay (see posts ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’ and ‘Updates, Common Themes and News, May 5 2017’). So Gwynne had a Big Mate. And Mars-Jones would have known Dafydd too, which might explain why Dafydd had such influence in the School of Psychology that he could secure his daughter a place to undertake a PhD there although she hadn’t passed the appropriate academic threshold and after that try to embezzle funds from the School. Mars-Jones was so well-connected that Bangor University would almost certainly have quaked in it’s boots in front of him – Mars-Jones was a regular at the Garrick which is probably the most elite of all the London gentlemans clubs and was packed to the rafters with judges even more influential than Mars-Jones. He was also President of the London Welsh Trust. There was someone in place at Bangor as well who was a Top Doctor from Liverpool who would also have been networked into people who might want to protect Gwynne – Sir Charles Evans, the Principal. By the time that I was raising concerns about Gwynne, Sir Charles had retired and Prof Eric Sunderland had replaced him – it was actually Eric Sunderland who ended up writing me a soothing apologetic letter about Gwynne after everyone else had tried to deal with me by getting nasty – but Charles Evans would have been Principal when Gwynne was first allowed across the threshold. Evans was best known for his ascent of Everest and other mountaineering feats, but he had been a surgeon. And of course, the ultimate reason why no-one at Bangor would want it getting out that one of the doctors in their Health Centre was a homophobic lobotomist who was ironically concealing a paedophile ring was that it could prove very embarrassing indeed for someone far grander than ‘Mars’-Jones – Prince Charles was the Chancellor…Christ it would have been more embarrassing than Diana. All this may have something to do with why another corrupt judge who concealed major problems in the mental health services, one Huw Daniel, was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd.

Further posts will be published soon – so those we know and love might as well start turning themselves in. As for ‘no-one knowing’ about Dafydd, Gwynne, the paedophile ring etc – well in the mid 1990s a mental health patient knew about much of it. Indeed he even rang bloody Crimestoppers repeatedly to tell them. None of those we know and love were arrested – but this patient was prevented from having access to his child by the ‘child protection team’. Which was odd because the Crimestoppers advert used to promise a community reward! I think they owe him a great deal of money. Perhaps Sarah Vine and the Daily Mail would like to dwell on that for a bit. And there wasn’t an Asian man in sight…

And they’d have got away with it as well if it wasn’t for those meddling service users… Go on Huw, off you go to Bangor Police Station and tell them all you know.

The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs

It was reported a few days ago that the Director of the film ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ has died. I’ve never seen the whole film, only short clips from it, but I think that the story features a gruesome psychiatrist who is also a cannibal. When this film was the subject of much commentary after it’s release, I was a patient at the Hergest Unit, seeing Dr X. Dr X was the psychiatrist who unbeknown to me was doing some terrible things behind the scenes, both to me and other patients – interestingly enough Dr X really loved ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and used to wax lyrical about the mad psychiatrist character. However at least Hannibal Lecter or whatever he was called was fictional – Dr X, his colleagues and their victims were all very real.

I have detailed in previous posts how Dr X advised psychiatrists from London to consult one Lucille Hughes for evidence of my ‘dangerousness’, Lucille Hughes being the Director of Gwynedd Social Services who was named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in the social services but failing to act (I have never met Lucille Hughes, which makes Dr X’s advice to Nigel Eastman and Robin Jacobson even more sinister.) My posts ‘More On Those Prisons For Folk Who Dared Complain’ and ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’ describes how a facility in Dolgellau for ‘mentally abnormal offenders’, Garth Angharad – which was owned and managed by a man who also owned residential schools and children’s homes where sexual abuse and cruelty were alleged to have been happening – was used to house some of the people who had complained about being sexually abused in children’s homes in north Wales and how an attempt to close this place down in 1992 was met with an Early Day Motion signed by Elfyn Llwyd and nine other MPs, demanding that this valuable facility remain open. I mentioned that this Early Day Motion was tabled in May 1992, just one month after a dreadful fire in a building in Brighton took place, which killed a number of former residents of north Wales children’s homes and their associates. Now for a bit more on that fire.

In April 1992 a small party was being held in a flat in a building in Brighton. Two men at the party had both been residents of Bryn Alyn, a notorious children’s home in north Wales, one of a complex of children’s homes owned by the notorious John Allen, who was later imprisoned for sexually abusing children in care in north Wales. Some reports allege that John Allen had arranged to meet the party goers at the flat but didn’t turn up. The party goers were well-known among Brighton’s gay community and there were allegations that they were involved in under-age sex/porn/drugs and had knowledge of liaisons with politicians. There seems to have been a great deal of confusion regarding who owned the building in which the fire took place. The flat had no fire escape, despite the local council wanting to contact the owner to recommend that one was installed. It transpired that the freehold of the building was owned by a company registered in the British Virgin Islands and because of it’s offshore status no-one was able to find out the names of the company directors. There were rumours that the notorious property developer Nicholas Hoogstraten leased the building but at the inquest into the five deaths, the East Sussex coroner, Dr Donald Gooding, refused to call Hoogstraten as a witness. (The families of some of the dead walked out of the inquest as a result and later applied for a judicial review of the inquest. At that hearing, Justice Latham ruled that there was a case for a judicial review on the basis that Gooding had acted ‘unreasonably and unlawfully’ in refusing to call Hoogstraten.) Although the inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing, there was much confusion about many things. A man called Trevor Carrington had allegedly confessed to starting the fire as a ‘prank’. It was alleged that in his confession he stated that he had set fire to a settee in the entrance hall. Yet fire investigators maintained that the fire had not started in the entrance hall – they stated that the fire had started in three different places at once and that more than one person would have been involved. They also suspected that an accelerant such as petrol was used. Just to add to the confusion, although the Home Office acknowledged the fire investigators findings, they refused to review the case. No-one could return to ask Trevor Carrington for more details because two days after his alleged confession he was found dead, after falling into the path of a lorry on a quiet rural road. The dear old police announced that his death was not suspicious and that he had killed himself by throwing himself under the lorry. Trevor Carrington was unemployed yet had taken receipt of 20 thousand pounds into his bank account shortly before he died. He had told a third party that he banked on the Isle of Man and needed to go there to withdraw some cash. Trevor Carrington’s alleged confession was only made to one other person whose reliability was called into question and there is no other record of it. A few days before the fire, a couple who lived in the top floor flat of the building were stopped by a stranger in the street and advised to get out of the flat. In 2002, Hoogstraten was convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned after he paid two thugs to kill a business rival. Once this was made public, some of the relatives of those who died in the fire called for a fresh probe into the fire. That does not seem to have happened. Hoogstraten did not spend that long in prison either – he was released and then left the UK to live in Zimbabwe. He was alleged to be a good mate of the delightful Robert Mugabe. Before Hoogstraten left the UK he was investigated for tax evasion – the planned trial was dropped when information was received that the judge was going to be assassinated if it went ahead.

Some of the relatives of the deceased and some who hadn’t actually died in the fire still insisted on making a nuisance of themselves and continued to cry ‘foul play’. One young man was particularly vocal and maintained that some of the former kids who had been resident in north Wales children’s homes had been murdered. This young man gave evidence against John Allen at Allen’s trial in 1995. Shortly after he gave evidence and days before he was due to receive a substantial sum from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board he was found dead. Another suicide – of course, what else…

It was reported that the ‘gay community’ of Brighton refused to come forward and give information to the police about the fire because of their ‘gay lifestyle’. In a town famous for it’s hospitality towards gay people. Obviously nothing to do with their fear of being found dead after having committed suicide. There were attempts to prod the High Court into reinvestigating the fire but the High Court refused. Probably because of it was ashamed of it’s lifestyle.

This blog has commented previously on the propensity of buildings with connections to the mental health services and children’s services in north Wales to go up in flames – indeed it nearly happened to my own house (please see previous blog posts). Some years after the fire in Brighton, there was another interesting fire, this time in a warehouse in north Wales. The warehouse in question housed the records of the children who had passed through the hands of Bryn Estyn, one of the children’s homes in north Wales where serious sexual and physical abuse of residents had occurred. The fire occurred during the Waterhouse Tribunal – the records were completely destroyed and as a result the Waterhouse Tribunal was unable to trace many of the former residents of Bryn Estyn and request them to give evidence. That fire was declared by the police to be not in the least bit suspicious either.

Fires don’t always destroy buildings and records however. When I lived near Bethesda in the 90s I vaguely knew a young family who lived nearby – they were distinctive because they were two young parents with a very big family, much bigger than is the norm, there were about six or seven children, all quite close together in age. My friend knew the mother of the family and I was told that she took her Catholicism seriously and refused to use contraception. This was eliciting a lot of grief from the local welfare professionals – the mother was alleged to have had a good education but later suffered with mental health problems, as did the father. There was constant disapproval regarding the number of children that these two young people had. The family were certainly short of money and lived in a small very chaotic house but I never witnessed the parents being anything other than very caring towards their children. Years after I left Bethesda, I met the father of this family in my friends café in Llanberis. He had developed a psychotic illness and was living rough in barns and outbuildings around Gwynedd. He remembered me and began a conversation – he had just been kicked out of the Hergest Unit (on what grounds I didn’t know), was clearly quite unwell but chatted away enthusiastically about his children who were now all teenagers and to whom he had remained very close. I last saw him in about 2007 – he had turned up at Bangor University very disorientated and was trying to gatecrash the graduation ceremony, but not in an aggressive way, he just wanted to join in the party. Some time later a former neighbour from Bethesda told me that this man had died. He had gone on a trip to Ireland where for some inexplicable reason someone had set him on fire. He died from his burns. I am not aware that anyone was ever prosecuted for this.

Someone else from the Bangor area was found dead in Ireland as well, some years before the father of the big family in Bethesda, although I’m not sure that this man could fairly be categorised as a lamb. This was Geoffrey Leigh, a rather unscrupulous businessman who ran a property management company called Access Accommodation in Bangor, back in the early 90s. Leigh became notorious for swindling both landlords and tenants and had more than a few enemies. Leigh was then found murdered in Ireland. It was reported on the news that he had emigrated to Ireland days before to ‘start a new life’. Everyone presumed that someone whom he had conned had exacted revenge – but it then became known that Leigh had been murdered by his gay lover, a much younger man whom at one point had been his employee. Things got even more cloudy when it transpired that the gay lover who had murdered Leigh did not go to prison, he was instead put on probation. There was no explanation given in the media for this very light sentence but a few years ago I was told by someone who had worked in the probation service in north Wales that it was considered to be a case of domestic abuse in a same sex relationship – I was told that Leigh had been extremely abusive to his partner and this was taken to be a mitigating circumstance. None of this ever appeared in the local press in north Wales. What did appear was an enormous feature on Geoff Leigh, paying tribute to his work as a DJ for Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd – he used to present their Sunday morning Christian show no less.

Geoff Leigh was not the only man in north Wales who wore his Christianity on his sleeve who came to grief amid allegations of same sex activity. There was the case of the ‘brutal slaying’ of the ‘friendly’ Llanberis vicar, Canon Alun Jones in 1982. Two teenage boys were put on trial for his murder in 1983, at Chester Crown Court (where else – please see previous posts for interesting happenings at Chester Crown Court). The boys maintained that they had not intended to kill Alun Jones, although they had gone to his house to rob him and steal his car in order to run away. One of the boys was sent to borstal, but the other boy, 15 year old Richard Dennick, was given a life sentence and is now residing at Ty Llewellyn, the medium secure psychiatric unit run by the north Wales mental health services. Interestingly enough the boy who ended up receiving a life sentence and then was transferred into the mental health system maintained that he attacked the vicar because the vicar had tried to sexually assault him. There was a panic in 2015 because Richard Dennick managed to escape from Ty Llewellyn – within minutes the police put out warnings about an escaped murderer and the local schools were all closed lest any of the children encountered the escaped madman. It was stated that Richard Dennick was ‘unpredictable’ ‘without his medication’. I can find no record of Richard Dennick attempting to attack children. Richard Dennick’s story has always been that he did not mean to kill Canon Jones and that he only ever attacked Jones because he panicked when he thought that Alun Jones was going to sexually assault him. But whoever could know the truth in this case – after all, Chester Crown Court, the north Wales mental health services and allegations of sexual assault are involved. The press at the time described Alun Jones as allowing local boys to visit the vicarage to ‘play snooker’. Somebody else who grew up near Llanberis and remembers the case described Canon Jones to me as a ‘paedophile’. The judge at Chester who sentenced the 15 year old boy to life imprisonment described the boy as ‘evil’ – he was a Judge William Mars-Jones, later Sir William Mars-Jones. Mars-Jones grew up in Denbighshire, attended Denbigh High School and was of the same vintage as the lobotomist who presided over the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for so many years, Dr T. Gwynne Williams. In his obituaries, Mars-Jones was described as the ‘leader’ of the Chester and North Wales Circuit. Like so many people who have starred on this blog, as well as sitting on the Chester and Wales Circuit, Mars-Jones read law at Aberystwyth University.

It was when Richard Dennick escaped from Ty Llewellyn in 2015 that I became well-acquainted with the case of the murder of the Llanberis vicar and read the old press reports. I realised then that I had confused the case with another case from Gwynedd, the case of the Rev Emyr Owen from Tywyn in 1985, who was sentenced to four years in prison at Chester Crown Court for mutilating corpses. The case caused the most enormous fuss and it was reported that the Rev Owen had severed penises from three corpses, feeding one penis to the seagulls, burning another one and throwing another into the sea. The Rev Owen was said to have explained his actions by claiming that two Emyrs existed and it was ‘Emyr ddwrg’ (bad Emyr) who had defiled the corpses. Much was made in newspaper reports of Emyr Owen’s penchant for Cuban heels, his ‘bachelor lifestyle’ and the fact that he drove a car displaying pictures of fire-breathing serpents. But like so many criminal trials at Chester involving defendants from north Wales, there are indications that all might not have been as it was reported. The policeman who proudly boasted of catching Emyr Owen, DC Gwyn Roberts, has recently written his memoirs (as policemen from the North Wales Force are prone to doing – a number of them have published books along the lines of ‘murderers and perverts that I have known’). It transpires that Emyr Owen’s habits with corpses only came to light when DC Roberts caught Emyr writing hate mail. Emyr denied writing the hate mail – the hate mail had been sent to the police at Tywyn and to the Chief Constable David Owen – and no-one had any idea who was writing it, until DC Roberts ‘proved’ that it was Emyr after examining ‘6000 samples of handwriting’. That is an awful lot of samples to examine with the naked eye, remember, contrast and compare and later identify as being the handwriting of Emyr. It was alleged that the handwriting was ‘old fashioned’ and that there was a ‘distinctive’ letter T involved. Now someone of Emyr’s generation would have been taught handwriting at school, in a very prescriptive way, which may well have persisted with him into later adulthood. It may have been the case that every child taught handwriting by the teacher who taught Emyr was taught to write a distinctive T. DC Gwyn Roberts did not entertain this idea – because he knew that Emyr Did It. Furthermore once he proved that Emyr had written the hate mail, he then discovered that Emyr had removed the penises from three corpses. No penises were ever found – so how DC Roberts knew that one had been fed to sea gulls, one burnt and another thrown into the sea I do not know. There is also no mention of any corpses without penises being discovered. And guess what – DC Roberts explained that relatives of the defiled corpses were never informed, there was no need to cause upset. So it sounds to me as though there wasn’t any evidence at all produced. Emyr denied defiling corpses until after he was sentenced. Before this however, DC Gwyn Roberts had discovered a whole treasure trove at Emyr’s house – sticky tape, pliers, pornography, negatives of penises arranged on a plate and God knows what else. It was speculated that Emyr could have held Black Masses with all this gear. No-one had ever witnessed him actually doing this, but he could have… Emyr has gone down in the local history of north Wales as ‘Emyr ddwrg’ – but I notice that Emyr only ‘confessed’ to being two people, one of which was Emyr ddwrg, after he was sentenced. Interestingly enough, before being stitched up, or should I say ‘caught defiling corpses’, Emyr Owen had been the High Sheriff’s chaplain, sitting alongside the judge at Caernarfon Crown Court. So if all the allegations of rampant corruption in the North Wales Police and in the Chester and North Wales Circuit at that time were true – including allegations of the police planting incriminating material and compiling false confessions – Emyr may well have known a few things that could have landed a few people in a lot of trouble. And what if the ‘bachelor’ Minister took his religion seriously – which he might have, driving around in a car decorated with fire-breathing serpents, he may have been very zealous – there’s a danger that he might not have been easily persuaded to keep quiet about perjury and corruption. The thing that leaves me most uneasy about this whole case though is the identity of one of the prime movers and shakers, the prosecuting counsel – it was one Huw Daniel. For details of the dreadful Huw Daniel’s activities when he was elevated to Judge Huw Daniel and the account of the forging of a certificate of indictment relating to a case over which he presided, please see my posts ‘Interesting Happenings In The Legal System’, ‘Discussions On The Minibus – And A Revealing Letter’ and ‘Behind The Scenes Regarding Those Legal Happenings’. Ooh, one further thing about Emyr Owen’s trial – it was held so close to Christmas that the court officials didn’t think that there’d be any press coverage. DC Roberts remembers that they all had quite a shock when they realised that the world’s press had got hold of the story. I bet they did – no doubt the plan was for Emyr to be banged up without a word being printed about any of it. The only surprise is that Emyr wasn’t declared a ‘schizophrenic’ and handed over to the lobotomist and Dr Dafydd Alun Jones (although there might have been an attempt at that, remember the clichéd allegations about the two Emyr’s, one good, one bad?) – but a psychiatrist, a Dr William Lawson, testified that Emyr was not psychiatrically ill. If any readers know what prevented Emyr Owen from disappearing into the North Wales Hospital to be drugged into oblivion or sent ‘downstairs’, or indeed being found dead after ‘committing suicide’, please do let me know…

So presumably we can add the names of Richard Dennick and the Rev Emyr Owen as well as the names of Howard Hughes (please see post ‘More On Those Prisons For Folk Who Dared Complain’) and Matthew Hardman (see post ‘Family Annihilation’) to the long list of Welsh lambs that have been well and truly silenced via possible miscarriages of justice.

As Emyr Owen discovered, being a professional person of some standing in the community does not protect one from becoming a Welsh lamb. I have always been interested in what might have precipitated the fall from grace of another two people who were employed in the domain of law and order in north Wales. I have mentioned Sergeant Morgan of Bangor Police Station in my early post ‘Hippocratic Oath Or Hypocritic Oaf?’. On the night on which I was transported to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and illegally imprisoned there, I heard Sgt Morgan, the custody Sgt on duty at Bangor Police Station, reaching a state of utter panic as he explained to the disgusting Dr K. Shah that I was being detained illegally. Sgt Morgan was ignored. I encountered Sgt Morgan a few months later when the north Wales mental health services were mass producing untruthful statements about me in a vain attempt to have me detained in Risley Remand Centre. I witnessed Sgt Morgan refuse to take a statement from one Janice Davies, a nurse at the North Wales Hospital, because he knew that it was a pack of lies – he was honest enough to tell me that ‘they’re all conspiring against you’. He also refused to allow Dr D.G.E. Wood into the cells to ‘visit’ me and prevented Dr X from sending ‘someone’ down to the police station to section me. In retrospect I suspect that it was only thanks to Sgt Morgan that I did not end up in Risley facing very serious charges. After I finally got home, I did of course make further complaints about the mental health services (they were never investigated). But I fear that I may have caused Sgt Morgan a great deal of difficulty. I had a row with Alun Davies, the manager of the mental health services at Ysbyty Gwynedd, on the phone – and I mentioned that even a policeman in Bangor Police Station had noted that the mental health services were conspiring against me. Davies bellowed down the phone that he’d ‘be making a complaint about that policeman’. Not long after, Sgt Morgan appeared in Court charged with indecently assaulting a teenage girl who had been in custody. The girl had been charged with theft and Sgt Morgan had put his hand in the back pocket of her jeans to ‘search’ her. It was enough to have him prosecuted, convicted and sacked. Now he may well have done what the teenager alleged. But that was nothing compared to what the rest of them were doing…. Now I know just how corrupt Davies et al were, I cannot help suspecting that Sgt Morgan was sacrificed. Time to hear Sgt Morgan’s story I think. Another person who was hung out to dry some ten years ago was John Grant Jones. John Grant Jones was the clerk to the Magistrates at Bangor. I remember him very well because he was there every time that the north Wales mental health services mounted prosecutions against me for ludicrous reasons. John Grant Jones was unfailingly friendly, polite, respectful and always explained procedures to me. So imagine my surprise when, many years later, John Grant Jones hit the headlines of the local press in a very big way. By that time he had reached a senior position in the Association of Justices Chief Executives, but he had been sacked amidst allegations of financial corruption. He stood accused of having fiddled extra money for his pension as well as an honorarium. In what must be a first for north Wales he was stripped of his OBE. John Grant Jones put up a fight and launched a case for unfair dismissal and I think disability discrimination. It was reported in the press that he had become very ill with the stress of what had happened to him and that his illness had then been used as a reason to put the boot in further. John Grant Jones eventually dropped his legal case and no longer works for the Court service in north Wales. I have no idea whether John Grant Jones was fiddling, but as with Sgt Morgan, even if John Grant Jones had been guilty of what he was accused, that was cat’s piss compared to what else was going on. As for taking away his OBE – just look at who in north Wales are hanging onto gongs: Keith Thomson, David Prichard, Peter Higson, D.G.E. Wood, Huw Daniel, Elfed Roberts – it’s a roll call of corrupt professional people who have been involved in the most serious wrongdoing. Time for John Grant Jones to tell us all why he was stuffed over by this bunch of crooks…

Like Sgt Morgan, there is yet another person whom I suspect may have been driven out of their job because they dared express the opinion that some of what was happening in the mental health services was shocking. For a while in the 90s I used to have a very nice GP in Bangor – she was very popular in the area and very well-respected. When I discussed Dr Dafydd Alun Jones with her she was honest enough to describe him as a ‘crook’ and a ‘wicked sick man’ – which is Dafydd in a nutshell really. She disappeared from Bangor some months later and no-one seemed to know why. Whilst browsing through the documents that were returned from my lawyers a few weeks ago I came across a copy of a letter that I’d written to Alun Davies after he had assured me that there were no problems with Dafydd at all. I had quoted this GP – I didn’t mention her by name, but what’s the betting that Davies et al did a bit of research to find out which GP could have made these comments? No wonder doctors won’t come and work in north Wales.

Before I finish this post, I’ll remember just three more lambs who were silenced. One was a man called Philip who had bipolar disorder, whom I first met in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. I have mentioned previously on the blog that just about everybody who I knew from those days is now dead – as far as I know, Philip was the last to die. I met up with Philip again when I was a patient at the Hergest Unit in about 2002, shortly before the dreadful Dr Tony Roberts did his best to ensure that I died. Like so many patients, Philip did not like either Tony Roberts or Dr David Healy. Whilst I was with him in the Hergest Unit Philip was quite manic and busied himself ruthlessly mocking Healy and Roberts, at one point writing a message up on a blackboard to remind the hospital of one of Healy’s less reputable activities. Some months after being discharged Philip died. ‘A problem with his medication’ I understand… I was told by a third party that it had been a case of sheer gross negligence. Another person whom I knew at the Hergest Unit with bipolar disorder has also fared very badly, although I don’t know if she is actually dead now. This was someone whose illness was very unstable at the best of times, but worsened if she was exposed to distress. At one point her behaviour became really intolerable and she was constantly unpleasant and offensive to everyone. I was told by one of the better nurses that this patient was particularly distressed because her sister had just begun nurse training at the Hergest Unit – the patient herself had been a student nurse before she became so ill that she had to withdraw. So no-one at the Hergest Unit knows the meaning of the expression ‘rubbing salt into the wound’ then. Never mind issues of confidentiality. I last saw this person in Bangor about five years ago. She was living rough and had been destitute for many months. She had spent the last few weeks hitch-hiking around the country and had earlier that morning hitched a lift from Manchester to Bangor with an unknown lorry driver. A lone, vulnerable woman with a severe mental illness who had spent the last twenty years in the embrace of the north Wales mental health services – duty of care anyone? The last lamb to be mentioned here was someone who was in the bed next to me in Seiriol Ward in Ysbyty Gwynedd in 1991. I thought of her as being an old lady, although she was probably about the same age that I am now, mid 50s. The reason that I thought of her as being an old lady was that she acted like one – she spent all day in bed and repeatedly stated her desire to be moved into an old people’s home so that she could die. She was a patient of Dr X and there was no privacy afforded to her at all, ward rounds were conducted by Dr X who would arrive at her bedside, in a dorm shared by loads of other patients, and ask her why she was ‘like this’. She would repeat that she wanted a place in an old folk’s home so that she could die. She had a husband who was clearly going out of his mind with worry who would diligently visit her every evening and a daughter who was probably in her early twenties who was very withdrawn and shy. A series of extraordinary decisions were made. Dr X announced that this lady was behaving like this because life in Seiriol Ward was ‘too comfortable’, so they were going to discharge her. The nurses were then told to prepare this lady’s shy daughter for her mother’s death – literally. And they did. They began to have conversations with her explaining that her mother ‘would not be here for ever’ and how they were going to help her live independently. The lady whose only desire to die was discharged. I understand that she died. What the bloody hell was Seiriol Ward, north Wales’s answer to Dignitas???
