The Defence Of The Realm

The British media have been overwhelmed by the birth of the latest addition to the Royal Family, William and Kate’s baby son, Louis. Louis has been named after Lord Louis Mountbatten – Prince Philip’s uncle – who was a substantial influence on his grand-nephew, Prince Charles. People of my vintage will remember that the press used to report on the close relationship that Prince Charles had with Lord Mountbatten and how Mountbatten fulfilled the role of Charles’s ‘honorary grandfather’. Mountbatten was killed by the IRA in 1979 and Charles was very deeply upset – he was famously photographed in tears at Mountbatten’s funeral.

Mountbatten was 79 years old when he was killed – he was a figure from Britain’s Imperial past, the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma and the Viceroy of India.

From the time of his birth in 1900 until 1917, when he and several other relations of King George V dropped their German styles and titles, Mountbatten was known as His Serene Highness Prince Louis of Battenberg. He was the youngest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine.  His sister was Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of Prince Philip.

Mountbatten’s nickname among family and friends was ‘Dickie’, although ‘Richard’ was not among his given names. This was because his great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, had suggested the nickname of ‘Nicky’, but to avoid confusion with the many Nickys of the Russian Imperial Family, ‘Nicky’ was changed to ‘Dickie’. Queen Victoria was one of his godparents, as was Nicholas II of Russia and Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg.

Mountbatten was educated at home for the first 10 years of his life. Then he was sent to Lockers Park School and on to the Royal Naval College, Osborne. In childhood he visited the Imperial Court of Russia and became close to the doomed Russian Imperial Family. He kept a photo of his cousin Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna at his bedside for the rest of his life.

In July 1916 Mountbatten was posted as midshipman and saw action in WWI.

In 1917 when the Royal Family adopted the name ‘Windsor’, Mountbatten’s father Prince Louis of Battenberg became known as Louis Mountbatten. Mountbatten acquired the courtesy title of Lord Louis Mountbatten – in 1946 he received a peerage, making him a ‘real’ Lord Louis Mountbatten.

After WWI, Mountbatten undertook a short course for ex-servicemen at Christ’s College, Cambridge. He was elected for a term to the standing committee of the Cambridge Union Society and was suspected of being sympathetic to the Labour Party.

In 1920 Mountbatten accompanied Edward, Prince of Wales, on a Royal tour of Australia on the battlecruiser to which Mountbatten had been posted. In 1921 he accompanied the Prince of Wales on a Royal tour of India and Japan – Edward and Mountbatten formed a close friendship during the tour. In 1923 Mountbatten was posted to the Mediterranean Fleet and in 1924 he briefly studied at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Mountbatten continued with his Naval career and then in June 1936 was appointed Personal Naval Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VIII. In July 1936 he joined the Naval Air Division of the Admiralty.

Mountbatten saw action again in WWII. He was involved in the Battle of Crete and the sinking of Mountbatten’s ship by German dive bombers in 1941 served as the basis for one of Noel Coward’s films. Coward was a personal friend of Mountbatten. Mountbatten was a favourite of Churchill and in 1941 Mountbatten became Chief of Combined Operations. In Aug 1943, Churchill appointed Mountbatten as the Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia Command with promotion to acting full Admiral.

In Feb 1947, Clement Attlee appointed Mountbatten as Viceroy of India with responsibility for overseeing the transfer of power and independence. Mountbatten concluded that a united India was not possible and prepared for partition. When India and Pakistan attained independence in Aug 1997, Mountbatten stayed on in New Delhi for ten months, serving as India’s first Governor-General.

Mountbatten’s record regarding India is seen as very mixed. One common view is that he hastened the independence process unduly and recklessly, foreseeing vast disruption and loss of life and not wanting this to occur on the British watch, but thereby actually helping it to occur, especially in Punjab and Bengal. J.K. Galbraith, the Harvard economist who advised the Governments of India during the 1950s and who served as the American Ambassador, 1961-63, was a particularly harsh critic of Mountbatten.

Rhodri Morgan was at Harvard in the early 1960s, undertaking an MA in Gov’t. He will have studied with Galbraith’s colleagues.

After India, Mountbatten served as Commander of the 1st Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean Fleet and, having been granted the substantive rank of Vice-Admiral in June 1949, he became Second-in-Command of the Mediterranean Fleet in April 1950. He became Fourth Sea Lord at the Admiralty in June 1950. He then returned to the Mediterranean to serve as Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet and NATO Commander, Allied Forces Mediterranean from June 1952. Mountbatten was promoted to the substantive rank of full Admiral in Feb 1953. In March 1953, he was appointed Personal Aide-de-Camp to HM the Queen.

Mountbatten served his final posting at the Admiralty as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from April 1955-July 1959. He was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet in Oct 1956.

I have discussed in previous posts how many of those who concealed the criminality of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and the paedophiles had served in the Royal Navy or had links with the Admiralty. Of course lots of people have served in the Royal Navy, but one name repeatedly came to mind whilst I was reading the details of Mountbatten’s Naval career – Admiral Sir Alec Bingley.

Sir Alec was the husband of Lady Juliet Bingley and the father of William Bingley. Lady Juliet and William Bingley colluded with and concealed the organised sexual abuse of children and psychiatric patients and the associated serious criminal activity during the many years when they occupied senior roles at MIND and William Bingley continued this valuable service for Dafydd and the paedophiles when he was appointed Chief Executive of the Mental Health Act Commission (see posts ‘MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course’ and ‘Additional Security Measures’).

Lady Juliet was certainly well-connected – she was a personal friend of Dom Mintoff, the PM of Malta and acted as a ‘messenger’ between him and the British Gov’t. The Bingleys had lived in Malta when Sir Alec was stationed there. A number of people involved with the north Wales and other UK paedophile rings who were convicted of child sex offences had retired to Malta. Lady Juliet was a former medical almoner (social worker) and her father had been a Top Doctor at Barts.

There are photos available of Louis Mountbatten in Malta, but I don’t know if he was stationed there like Sir Alec.

Sir Alec, like Mountbatten, had a long and distinguished career in the Navy. Sir Alec was five years younger than Lord Mountbatten and joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1918. He served in WWII on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet. In 1943 and 1944 Sir Alec was Commander of aircraft carriers and in 1945 he was Commander of the Mobile Naval Air Base HMS Nabaron. After the war he was Deputy Director of Air Warfare. He went on to be Chief of Staff to the Flag Officer (Air) and then Commander of the aircraft-carrier HMS Eagle in 1952.

Sir Alec was appointed Fifth Sea Lord and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Air) in 1954 and Flag Officer, Aircraft Carriers in 1958. He was made Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet and NATO Commander, Allied Forces Mediterranean in 1959 and then Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth and Allied Commander-in-Chief, Channel in 1961; Sir Alec retired in 1963.

So Sir Alec – as Fifth Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Air Services, 1954-56 – served directly under Mountbatten.

The names of two other people who served as First Sea Lord jumped out at me as well – Admiral Sir David Luce, First Sea Lord 1963-66 and Admiral of the Fleet Sir Michael Le Fanu, First Sea Lord, 1968-70. Sir David Luce is the uncle of Lord Richard Luce, a member of Thatcher’s Cabinet who held Ministerial positions in the Foreign Office (see post ‘The International Language Of Screaming’). The comedian Miranda Hart is Richard Luce’s niece. Go on Miranda, do that face that you do for the camera! Do you still feel like making jokes about sad lonely women who are desperate to get engaged now that I’ve outed your extended family as concealing a paedophile gang? Don’t forget that little song and dance routine that you seem to do at the end of every episode, you know when you hold hands with your mum and your flat mate…

I think that Sir Michael Le Fanu is related to the Top Doctor James Le Fanu – Sir Michael is possibly James Le Fanu’s father. James Le Fanu is known as a Top Doc of right wing views who scribbles for ‘The Spectator’ and the Torygraph and enjoys being controversial. In the early 1990s James Le Fanu was a partner in a GPs practice in Trevelyan Road, Tooting and for all I know he may still be. How do I know? Because it was the GPs practice that I was registered with when I was working at St George’s Hospital Medical School, 1989-91. The St George’s who had employed Professor Oliver Brooke as their Professor of Paediatrics, who in 1986 was imprisoned for the possession of a vast quantity of child porn. Brooke was a key figure in a pan-European paedophile ring. Brooke was convicted and imprisoned but his colleagues at St George’s continued to conceal the paedophile ring of which Brooke was a member.

One of the the GPs from Le Fanu’s practice also held an academic position at the Dept of General Practice at St George’s. A female GP in Le Fanu’s practice in 1991 refused to treat me when I went to see her after Springfield Hospital – the mental health unit attached to St George’s – told me that I was going to be discharged without any treatment. Documents in my possession demonstrate that Drs Robin Jacobson and Alice Levinson, as well as Professor Nigel Eastman – all of St George’s/Springfield – knew that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones was sexually exploiting patients and they also suspected that Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) was as well. Jacobson, Levinson and Eastman were well aware of how serious the criminality in north Wales was and were directly in contact with Dafydd, Tony Francis and Lucille Hughes. Dr Ruth White worked with the same team and will also have known, but I only have documentary evidence written by Jacobson, Levinson and Eastman (see post ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London…’)

Le Fanu has written about ‘the fall of medicine’, which he attributes to ‘The New Genetics’ and to the ‘social theory’ of public health, such as the work of Ancel Keys. Do you know Dr Le Fanu, I think that the dreadful state of medicine has far more to do with the medical establishment colluding with serious criminality and research fraud, just as your colleagues in Trevelyan Road did.

Le Fanu will have known about Oliver Brooke and also the research fraud at St George’s perpetrated by Malcolm Pearce and Geoffrey Chamberlain (see post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’). Le Fanu will also know that after Pearce was struck off and Chamberlain resigned as President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, there was another scandal in the same Dept, so the Dept was closed down. It continued!! The Academic Dept of Obs and Gynae was closed but of course the Top Docs continued with their clinical work and then Rashmi Varma, the Top Doc who ran the fertility clinic, found herself in front of the GMC after it was alleged that she pressurised NHS patients into donating eggs for private patients. The GMC cleared her, but nonetheless Varma returned to her home country of India after declaring that she had ‘enemies’ in Britain who didn’t like her because she was female and Indian. Years later I met someone who had been working at St George’s during the Varma scandal who told me that she was undoubtedly guilty and was amassing a fortune by exploiting desperate infertile patients. It was true that Varma had enemies, but as the man who was on the scene at the time observed, they were all a bunch of complete bastards who were at each others throats.

Then there was Tony Francis’s mate Prof Hamid Ghodse who was working at St George’s and Springfield – the Hamid who was involved in drug dealing and distribution (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’).

One can only wonder what Frank Ball, the HR officer at St George’s, was doing throughout all this. I know some of what Frank was doing in 1990. He was complaining about me to my boss after I went to see him and showed him the abusive notes that had been left for me in my lab by another member of staff. Better to complain about me than deal with a gang of paedophiles employed in the medical school then Frank!

Readers who follow the comments section of this blog will have noticed that recently someone stated that there are allegations that Lord Mountbatten was the member of the British Royal Family who was alleged to be abusing the residents of Kincora Boys’ Home in Belfast. It was admitted in the 1985 Hughes Report that boys were sexually abused and prostituted at Kincora by a number of people.

Dr Morris Fraser, the Belfast child psychiatrist who was a member of PIE and convicted of child abuse, abused boys at Kincora. After the GMC failed to strike Fraser off the register in spite of his convictions for child sex offences, Fraser moved to England and worked as a psychiatrist at Springfield Hospital and UCH. The counsel for the GMC at Fraser’s fitness to practice hearing was Patrick Mayhew. Mayhew later became the Tory MP for Tunbridge Wells, the Solicitor General, 1983-87, the Attorney General, 1987-92 under Margaret Thatcher and then John Major and Secretary of State for N Ireland, 1992-97. It was Mayhew who as Attorney General authorised two prosecutions of me for contempt of court, although in both cases it was admitted that perjury had been committed. The perjurers were Dr Tony Francis, Dr Sadie Francis, Keith Fearns, Maggie Fookes, Bob Ingham and Jackie Brandt. No action was taken against any of them.

More recently it has been admitted that the boys at Kincora were abused by senior officers of the British Army, the RUC and Whitehall civil servants. It is alleged that Anthony Blunt – the Cambridge spy and art historian formerly responsible for the Royal Collection – molested boys at Kincora and that groups of gay men from the mainland used to go on jollies to Kincora.

The 1985 Hughes Report stated that the sort of abuse occurring at Kincora was occurring in children’s homes across the whole of the UK. Many of the gangs involved were linked.

When Mountbatten was murdered by the IRA in 1979, it was presumed that he had been targeted because he was a member of the Royal Family and comments made by Gerry Adams supported this view. However, others have claimed that Mountbatten was killed because of his involvement in the abuse at Kincora.

After leaving the Admiralty, Lord Mountbatten took up the position of Chief of the Defence Staff. He served in this post for six years during which he was able to consolidate the three service departments of the military branch into a single MoD. Mountbatten was appointed Colonel of the Life Guards, Gold Stick in Waiting and Life Colonel Commandant of the Royal Marines in 1965. He was Governor of the Isle of Wight from 20 July 1965 and then the first Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight from 1 April 1974.

Between 1967-78, Mountbatten was president of the United World Colleges Organisation, then represented by a single college – Atlantic College in south Wales, the alma mater of the Baroness of Ely aka Eluned Morgan, who believes that she should be Wales’s next FM on the grounds that she is in possession of ovaries (see post ‘The Old Devils’). In 1978, Mountbatten passed the Presidency of the College to his great-nephew, the Prince of Wales.

In his book ‘Spycatcher’, Peter Wright claimed that in May 1968 Mountbatten attended a private meeting with press baron Cecil King and the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Solly Zuckerman. Wright alleged that ‘up to thirty’ MI5 officers had joined a secret campaign to undermine the crisis-stricken Labour government of Harold Wilson and that King was an MI5 agent. In the meeting, King allegedly urged Mountbatten to become the leader of a Government of national salvation. Solly Zuckerman pointed out that it was ‘rank treachery’ and the idea came to nothing because of Mountbatten’s reluctance to act.

In 2006, the BBC documentary ‘The Plot Against Harold Wilson’ alleged that there had been another plot involving Mountbatten to oust Wilson during his second term in office (1974–76). The alleged plot revolved around right wing former military figures who were supposedly building private armies to counter the perceived threat from trade unions and the Soviet Union. They believed that the Labour Party, which was and still is partly funded by affiliated trade unions, was unable and unwilling to counter these developments and that Wilson was either a Soviet agent or at the very least a Communist sympathiser – claims that Wilson strongly denied. The documentary alleged that a coup was planned to overthrow Wilson and replace him with Mountbatten using the private armies and sympathisers in the military and MI5.

The first official history of MI5, ‘The Defence Of The Realm’ (2009), tacitly confirmed that there was a plot against Wilson and that MI5 did have a file on him. Yet it also made clear that the plot was in no way official and that any activity centred on a small group of discontented officers. This much had already been confirmed by former Cabinet Secretary Lord Hunt, who concluded in a secret inquiry conducted in 1996 that ‘there is absolutely no doubt at all that a few, a very few, malcontents in MI5…a lot of them like Peter Wright who were right-wing, malicious and had serious personal grudges – gave vent to these and spread damaging malicious stories about that Labour government.’

The security services certainly seemed to have been doing some rather odd things at this time. It is widely believed that the bizarre Old Bailey trial of the then leader of the Young Liberals Peter Hain for bank robbery in 1976 was the result of a fit-up by the security services because of Hain’s anti-apartheid activism. The judge who presided over Hain’s trial, Sir Alan King-Hamilton, was a notoriously dreadful old git and felt able to insult Peter Hain, although the charges against him were demonstrated to be ludicrous and he was acquitted.

Fred Holroyd, an MI6 officer who served in N Ireland in the 1970s, alleges that he was detained in a psychiatric hospital in order to discredit him because he was a witness to serious wrongdoing by the authorities in N Ireland. Holroyd maintains that there was a civil war between different factions of MI5 at the time and that there was a plot among some MI5 officers to destabilise Harold Wilson’s Gov’t.

My interest is in the collusion of the security services with the criminal activities of Dafydd and the paedophiles, which undoubtedly happened. Whilst it is clear that there were a number of people in very senior positions who were abusing children and no doubt at the time they were protected because of their positions, I suspect that the reason why there is still so much reluctance to admit the extent of the problem and the associated cover-up isn’t because anyone really wants to protect dead paedophiles but because no-one wants to fess up that the medical and legal establishment were in this up to their necks. What would we do if the general public lost trust in the Top Docs and the judiciary? Answer – they’d be able to protect themselves, which Brown and I as well as scores of other much more vulnerable people than us were not able to do so. They were forced into prostitution and then found dead. Public safety should have been prioritised, not public confidence in the medical profession. People died because criminal Top Doctors were protected by corrupt lawyers and judges and were allowed to continue with their very serious wrongdoing.

Dafydd Alun Jones is still on the medical register. The bickering over the future of the derelict North Wales Hospital Denbigh continues, whilst the bodies of some of the victims are still buried out there.

Mountbatten married Edwina Ashley, the granddaughter of Sir Ernest Cassel and heir to his fortune, in 1922. Mountbatten stated that ‘Edwina and I spent all our married lives getting into other people’s beds’. I don’t mind how many beds of consenting adults either of them climbed into, but I’m seriously pissed off that Brown, I and some of our friends have had so much grief because we trod on the toes of the people who were facilitating a branch of the trafficking ring with which it is alleged that Mountbatten was involved.

Lord and Lady Mountbatten had two daughters, Patricia Knatchbull, sometime lady-in-waiting to HM the Queen and Lady Pamela Hicks, also sometime lady-in-waiting to the Queen.

Sir Peter Morrison’s sister Dame Mary Morrison spent most of her life as lady-in-waiting to HM the Queen. Then there was the Queen Mum’s loyal servant, Backstairs Billy (satirised in Viz as Backdoor Billy), who died of an HIV related illness.

Furthermore Prince Charles had a deep and meaningful friendship with Jimmy Savile and took advice from Savile re the marital discord between him and Diana. Why Charles thought that a necrophiliac paedophile who had never had anything remotely like a normal relationship himself would make a good marriage guidance councillor I don’t know. It’s not even as if he was Laurens van der Post. Although after van der Post died it was revealed that he fathered a baby with the 14 year old girl after her parents had appointed him as her guardian. As Charles would say in the ‘Private Eye’ ‘Heir of Sorrows’ stories, ‘It really is appalling’.

I don’t know what is going on in the Royal Family, but if I was Kate I’d get the hell out of there along with the baby and change his name.

In his capacity as mentor to the young Prince Charles, Mountbatten encouraged Charles to enjoy the bachelor life and ‘sow his wild oats’ while he could and then marry a ‘young and inexperienced girl’ so as to ensure a stable married life. Er, yes. That particular plan backfired big time.

Mountbatten fancied himself as a marriage bureau for the Royals. It was he who had arranged the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Dartmouth Royal Naval College in July 1939, taking care to include the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret in the invitation, but assigning his nephew, Cadet Prince Philip of Greece, to keep them amused while their parents toured the facility. This was the first recorded meeting of Charles’s future parents. Mountbatten’s efforts nearly came to nothing when a few months later he received a letter from his sister Alice in Athens informing him that Philip was visiting her and had agreed to permanently repatriate to Greece. Within days, Philip received a command from his cousin and sovereign, King George II of Greece, to resume his naval career in Britain which, though given without explanation, the young Phil obeyed.

In 1974, Mountbatten began corresponding with Charles about a potential marriage to his granddaughter, the Hon Amanda Knatchbull. After years of beating about the bush, in 1979 Charles did propose to Amanda but she turned him down. Unlike Di, she must have known what she would have been letting herself in for.

Mountbatten usually holidayed at his summer home, Classiebawn Castle, in County Sligo, Ireland. In 1978, the IRA had allegedly attempted to shoot Mountbatten as he was aboard his boat, but ‘choppy seas had prevented the sniper lining up his target’.

On 27 August 1979, Mountbatten went fishing in his wooden boat, which had been moored in the harbour at Mullaghmore. IRA member Thomas McMahon had slipped onto the unguarded boat that night and attached a radio-controlled bomb weighing 50 pounds. When Mountbatten was aboard, just a few hundred yards from the shore, the bomb was detonated. The boat was destroyed by the force of the blast and Mountbatten’s legs were almost blown off. Mountbatten was pulled alive from the water by nearby fishermen, but died from his injuries before being brought to shore. Also aboard the boat were his elder daughter Patricia (Lady Brabourne), her husband John (Lord Brabourne), their twin sons Nicholas and Timothy Knatchbull, John’s mother Doreen (Lady Brabourne) and Paul Maxwell, a young crew member from County Fermanagh. Nicholas (aged 14) and Paul (aged 15) were killed by the blast and the others were seriously injured. Doreen (aged 83) died from her injuries the following day.

Just for the record, no matter what Mountbatten had been involved in, they shouldn’t have done it. Although Dr D.G.E. Wood should most definitely be behind bars.

Now Blair, time to come clean about the details of the shabby deal that you thrashed out which led to the Good Friday Agreement but ensured that the truth about Kincora was buried. Along with the victims and witnesses.

Now I’ll revisit someone who has been featured previously on this blog but deserves another outing – Virginia Bottomley. Virginia was of course Health Secretary under John Major, 9 April 1992 – 5 July 1995. That was before devolution, so I will repeat my appeal for Virginia to come forward and explain why everyone was told that the North Wales Hospital Denbigh was closed down when it wasn’t and of course for her to let us know why Dafydd was allowed to ‘retire’ in a deal which guaranteed that none of the very serious complaints about him would be followed up and into the bargain gave his charity CAIS the contract for providing ‘substance abuse services’ for north Wales (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’). Virginia might also like to shed light on the stitching up of patient F as detailed in my post ‘Killing Floor – I Know Cos I Was There!’, because that happened on her watch as well. As did the declaration by the North Wales Police that there was ‘no evidence’ of a paedophile ring in the region, although social workers were being convicted of offences against children in care and former kids in care were being found dead.

Virginia was born in Dunoon, Scotland, to Barbara Rutherford-Smith, a teacher and elected Conservative member of the ILEA and W. John Garnett, former Director of what was then called The Industrial Society.

Bottomley was educated at Putney High School, before going to the University of Essex. She later completed an MA at the LSE. Early in her career she worked life as a researcher for the Child Poverty Action Group, which was established by Peter Townsend and Brian Abel-Smith, two people who knew about the abuse of children and patients at the hands of the state but who ignored it (see post ‘The Old Devils’). Virginia also worked as a psychiatric social worker so she will have been complicit with that abuse. Bottomley was a magistrate and Chairman of the Inner London Juvenile Court. So Virginia had all avenues of escape from abusers nicely stitched up.

Virginia was elected to Parliament in a by-election in 1984 as the Tory MP for South West Surrey. That constituency covers Haslemere which I think is the stomping ground of Professor Vincent Marks – at least he was involved with the U3A there, so I presume that he is located nearby. Vincent not only knew about wrongdoing and research fraud in cancer research, but his brother John Marks was President of the BMA whilst the BMA were colluding with attempts to fit me up for serious offences (see posts ‘The Blog Post That Was Hacked Can Now Be Read’, ‘Cottaging At Castle Gate’ and ‘Gwlad y Menig Gwynion’).

Someone else used to live near Haslemere as well when Ginny was the MP for that constituency – me. It was whilst I was living in Ginny’s constituency that I was targeted by a serial sex offender and Alun Davies was using subterfuge to access my home address and of course whilst the BMA were colluding with the criminality in north Wales.

Ginny was PPS to Chris Patten. Patten’s wife – Lady Lavender Patten of Barnes – was later Patron of Prof Mark Williams’s Oxford Mindfulness Centre. Mark Williams established that Centre on the back of a research fraud that he carried out when he was a clinical psychologist working with the Dafydd and the paedophiles in Bangor in the late 1980s (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’). Whilst Lavender was Mark’s Patron, Chris Patten was Chancellor of Oxford University, where Mark Williams was employed and of which the Centre was a part of.

Ginny then moved on to work as PPS to Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe. Who before he entered politics was a barrister on the corrupt Chester and Wales Circuit, whose members concealed the crimes of Dafydd and the paedophiles. Geoffrey Howe was a lifelong close friend of Sir Ronnie Waterhouse, who performed the mother of all cover-ups when he Chaired the Waterhouse Inquiry. Waterhouse became a friend of Howe when they were students and in later life Waterhouse was entertained by Howe at Number 11, Chevening and Dorneywood. Howe helped Dafydd and the paedophiles out when he was Solicitor General, 1970-72 and he was a member of Thatcher’s Gov’t at the same time as Sir Peter Morrison, whilst Morrison was attending sex parties with kids in care, including in north Wales. Whilst Howe was Foreign Secretary, Morrison held positions as Minister of State for Employment, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Deputy Tory Party Chairman and Minister of State for Energy (see post ‘These Sharks Are Crap As Well’).

Geoffrey Howe was the constituency MP for a Surrey constituency, as was Sir Michael Grylls. Both of them knew about Sir Peter Morrison’s activities and Dafydd and the paedophiles. In my post ‘An Appalling Vista’ I explained why I am wondering if they were involved in the fit-up of patient F.

Ginny was appointed Minister of State at the DoH in 1989, so her knowledge of Dafydd, the paedophiles and the dungeon at Denbigh will have been gained before she was Secretary of State. Ginny will also have known that two successive Whitehall mandarins with responsibility for mental health – Brian McGinnis and Cliff Graham – were corrupt, concealing serious crime and facilitating organised sexual abuse within the mental health system (see post ‘The Old Devils’). Ginny will have known about the violence, abuse and murders in the special hospitals as well and that William Bingley was concealing the lot, as well as the activities of Dafydd et al in north Wales, in his role as Chief Executive of the Mental Health Act Commission (see post ‘Security, Security’). By 1989 Gwynedd Health Authority was in such chaos that it was the subject of questions in the House (see post ‘A Visit To Gwynedd Archives’). Ginny will have known…

Bottomley served as Secretary of State for National Heritage, 1995-97. In 1997 she returned to the backbenches and also become a headhunter at executive headhunting firm Odgers. Since 2000 Ginny has been Chair of Board Practice at Odgers Berndtson.

Ginny might like to illuminate another shady deal. Some nine years ago, Bangor University paid Todgers a great deal of money to headhunt a Director for the grand new Arts Centre that it was building, Pontio. Pontio was a huge multi-million pound development and was planned to serve the town of Bangor as well as the University. There is bugger all in terms of that sort of Centre in north west Wales and Pontio serves as the Students’ Union, the theatre, the art gallery, the cinema and also provides facilities for teaching, research and businesses. Todgers were tasked with supplying a Mr Big to direct development of Pontio in the early stages. It was Professor Fergus Lowe – who built his empire on his knowledge of the wrongdoing of Dafydd and the paedophiles – who went to Todgers, because Fungus was Thinking Big.

Todgers headhunted an utter twat. The twat had no understanding that Gwynedd was a bilingual region and he was completely disrespectful and insensitive to Welsh speakers. When he was told that he had to take their wishes into consideration he started whinging on about how they were going to burn his house down and refused to meet the Welsh speakers for discussions. Then he insulted the Students’ Union reps with whom he was supposed to be negotiating and made it quite clear that they were somewhere between the black plastic bin liner and the tea lady. After months of chaos, protests and demos, the twat from Todgers parted company with Bangor University and someone else was brought in to clear up the mess.

At the time the havoc was blamed on Fungus because no-one liked him anyway, but those in the know told me that Todgers behaved disgracefully and really screwed up. The twat from Todgers arrived just at the time that the paedophiles’ friends declared war on the VC, who had dared challenge them.

Todgers’ contribution to Pontio cost a great deal of money and delayed the building by many months.

Do you happen to know why Todgers sent a twat to Bangor University to cause discord, bad publicity and much embarrassment Virginia?

Bottomley has held numerous positions, including that of a non-executive Director of BUPA, 2007-13; a Vice-Patron of Carers and of Cruse Bereavement Care and a lay Canon of Guildford Cathedral.

Bottomley’s brother, Christopher Garnett, was Chief Executive of the train operating company GNER. Her cousins include Peter Jay, the former British Ambassador to the US and son-in-law of James Callaghan and Lord Hunt of Chesterton (Labour), father of Labour MP and historian Tristram Hunt. More distant relatives include Lord Oakeshott (Lib Dem) and Baron Jay of Ewelme, former British Ambassador to France. Dame Julia Cleverdon married Bottomley’s father, John. Her husband’s niece is Kitty Ussher, a former Blairite Labour minister (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part V’).

Virginia has three children, Cecilia, Adela and Joshua.

Cecilia Bottomley is a Top Doctor, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist who works at the Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. Cecilia is also involved in private practice and has worked for BUPA – well her mum was a Director of that company – and at the Lister Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare.

There is a Josh Bottomley who is has worked for Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and as MD for LexisNexis and for The Financial Times Group. Josh then became Global Head of Display for Google in California and in 2012 was appointed Global Head of Digital for HSBC.

Virginia’s husband is Peter Bottomley, who was Tory MP for Woolwich West, then Eltham and is at present the MP for Worthing West. Peter Bottomley was born in Shropshire and his mother was a social worker. So he’ll know that there was organised child abuse in Shropshire linked to the north Wales gang that stretched back decades. In the early 1970s Bottomley founded the Neighbourhood Council in south Lambeth – when the kids in care were being abused both in children’s homes in Lambeth and also when they were sent on placement by Lambeth to north Wales.

Between 1978-80, Peter Bottomley was the President of the Conservative Trade Unionists. He was a Trustee with Christian Aid, 1978-84. Peter was for some years a member of the Monday Club, despite disagreeing with their policies on immigration, race relations, Rhodesia and South Africa. So one wonders why he bothered to join. He has been Chairman of the Church of England’s Children’s Society, a Trustee of MIND and of NACRO, another organisation which has done many a favour for the paedophiles and their friends (see post ‘Inside Information About A Hergest Unit Death’). Bottomley has also served on the policy committee of One Parent Families. He served on the successor committee to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s commission Faith in the City and Chaired the Churches’ review group on the Churches Main Committee. Bottomley is a member of the Ecclesiastical Committee and has been appointed the Parliamentary Warden at St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster. He is Vice Chair of WATCH, Women and the Church, supporting full equal acceptance of ‘females’. In which case he might like to go and have a word with them down at St David’s in Pembrokeshire, because they’re giving the new Bishop there a really bad time because she has the temerity to be a woman.

Following the 1983 General Election, Peter Bottomley became the PPS to the Secretary of State at the DHSS, Norman Fowler. So Peter Bottomley knows all about Dafydd and the paedophiles from his time as Fowler’s bag carrier then.

Bottomley was a junior Minister at the Dept of Employment, 1984-86. So he worked alongside Peter Morrison whilst Morrison was a Minister in that Dept. In 1989 Bottomley worked in the N Ireland Office and then in 1990 he spent a brief time as PPS to Peter Brooke, the Secretary of State for N Ireland…

Bottomley has been a member of Mental Health Groups in Parliament.

Bottomley’s brother was a Councillor in the paedophile-ridden Borough of Lambeth and his brother-in-law was the Mayor of Cambridge, a post also occupied by Trumpers (see post ’95 Glorious Years!’). In 1997 Keith Laverack, a senior manager of Cambridgeshire Social Services was imprisoned for child abuse (see post ‘The Mentor’). Laverack was imprisoned by the appalling Judge Huw Daniel, who spent years providing an excellent service to the paedophiles’ friends of north Wales. I’m still waiting for Huw to tell us all why Laverack was hung out to dry but the rest of them were protected.

In 1989 Peter Bottomley successfully sued ‘The Mail On Sunday’, the ‘ Daily Express’ and ‘News Of The World’ over allegations connected with his support of the union membership of a social worker in his constituency accused of ‘misbehaviour’ in a children’s home. In 1995 he was awarded £40,000 against the ‘Sunday Express’ for an article that depicted him as having behaved in a treacherously disloyal and disreputable manner in connection with Sinn Fein/the IRA.

Previous posts have detailed some of the activities of Sir William Mars-Jones, a member of the judiciary who, like Huw Daniel, originated from north Wales and was a good friend to Dafydd and the paedophiles. My post ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ described how in my collection of documents I have found letters with details of people who dared complain about the North Wales Hospital Denbigh which were CC’d to a Mrs D. Mars-Jones. I think that Mrs D. Mars-Jones was a member of Clwyd Health Authority, but even so, she should not have been party to some of the confidential information about patients which was being made available to her.

I could not work out who Mrs D. Mars-Jones was. William Mars-Jones’s wife was called Sheila, but I wondered if she used another name as well. William Mars-Jones was the son of the man who ran the Post Office in Llansannan, Denbighshire and was born William Jones. He only metamorphosed into Mars-Jones when he became a barrister and wanted to be rather more than a common or garden Jones. I thus presumed that he was the only Mars-Jones and therefore Mrs D must have been his wife.

However, I have uncovered some more Mars-Jones’s – they are agricultural merchants from Denbigh. One of them is a David Mars-Jones of Llansannan, Denbigh who was High Sheriff of Clwyd in 1989. Llansannan was the birth place of William Mars-Jones. I can only presume that in the wake of William becoming a big shot, some other members of his family took a leaf out of his book and also called themselves Mars-Jones. David Mars-Jones was born in Llansannan in 1919 – William Mars-Jones was born in 1915. Was David his younger brother? I think it highly likely that Mrs D. Mars-Jones was Mrs David Mars-Jones.

Someone who will know about the Mars-Jones’s is Ieuan Wyn Jones, the former MP and AM for Ynys Mon, leader of Plaid and Deputy PM. Ieuan comes from Denbigh, so Ieuan knows all about Dafydd and the paedophiles’ as well. Not that Ieuan has ever mentioned a word about their wrongdoing, even during those years when Ieuan was working as a solicitor just down the road in Ruthin, in the same practice as paedophiles’ friend and Freemason, David Jones (see post ‘The Right Honourable David Jones MP’).

Ieuan’s friend Bob Parry probably knows the Mars-Jones’s as well. Bob Parry was for many years the Deputy President and then President of the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW).

Bob Parry is also a longstanding member of the famously dysfunctional Anglesey County Council, so Bob might know something about those Chinese babies who some years ago were so readily available for adoption by people living on Anglesey who were in possession of the right amount of dosh (see post ‘The Old Devils’).

Bob Parry was elected as the Chairman of the Isle of Anglesey County Council for 2016/17. Here he is, looking particularly delighted at the prospect of office:

bob parry chairman

Cllr Parry first became a member of the Isle of Anglesey Borough Council in 1981 as a Plaid Cymru councillor, representing the communities of Bryngwran and Gwalchmai. He served as Mayor of the Borough Council in 1989/90.

As Bob was involved with Anglesey County Council as far back as the 1980s, perhaps he can remember the case of the teenaged boy who was fostered by a family on Anglesey, made to work on the farm as hard as an adult full time farm worker and was tied to the beams of the barn and whipped when the foster carers were displeased with him. Do you know how such people were ever deemed to be suitable as foster carers Bob, because Anglesey County Council had something to do with that decision.

A former Leader and Deputy Leader of the County Council, Cllr Parry has previously held both the Environment and Planning portfolios on the Authority’s Executive.

Bob will therefore be able to explain some of the eccentric planning decisions which have been a hallmark of Anglesey County Council for decades. One of Bob’s fellow Councillors became a millionaire as a result of such decisions – I think it was one of those who went to prison. Never mind, his money will still be there for him when he comes out, it’s not as if Huw Daniel is going to made a confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime legislation is it.

Guess who it was who was the first person who told me that ‘there is massive corruption in Anglesey County Council, particularly in the planning department?’ It was Dr D.G.E. Wood no less, in about 1983. Well he should know, he was a corrupt Top Doctor who owned one of the most expensive houses on Anglesey. It was an incredibly vulgar new build and I imagine that someone must have been bribed to have got the plans for that through the planning committee. Not that Wood will have done the bribing – not on that occasion at least – because the house was already built when Wood moved in. Brown and me had walked past that house every evening on our daily stroll for months and had pissed ourselves laughing at it, because it was called ‘IX Ranch’ for some unfathomable reason. Then one day a slate sign with the name ‘Tyddyn Hen Farm’ appeared at the end of the drive and we realised that IX Ranch had changed hands. We were gobsmacked when we found out that it was Wood and his wife who had purchased it, although Brown observed ‘it’s just their sort of house isn’t it’. Indeed it was. Lavish and blinging, purchased from the proceeds of a sex trafficking ring.

Wood was last heard of living in an even grander house near Conwy. He’s probably bought Penrhyn Castle off the National Trust by now.

Bob Parry represents the Bryngwran ward. He is also Director of the Bryngwran Cymunedol social enterprise which runs the Iorwerth Arms pub in the village.

So Bob Parry will know Dr Delyth Morris aka Duckula, who lives at Bryngwran. Duckula is a paedophiles’ friend and was a social worker employed by Gwynedd County Council whilst the paedophile gang swung within Gwynedd Social Services. Duckula owned some land and that land was soon covered with bungalows. Duckula really hates the owners of second homes on Anglesey, which is why she owns a second home in France. She used to flee to her residence in France to avoid the bastards who owned second homes near her place at Bryngwran. It was where she was holed up when she was not bothering to make it into work when she was employed by Bangor University.

I seem to remember hearing that Duckula’s friend and mentor at Bangor University, Prof Glyn Williams aka Glyn Patagonia, also owned a second home in France. I never had the Glyn Williams Experience, he had left Bangor University by the time that I was employed there, but I heard much about him from people for whom the memories were all too vivid. The allegations that he systematically discriminated against English students when assessing work were legion, but as one Welsh speaker explained to me, Glyn was a shitbag to many of them as well and accused them of being ‘bloody Marxists’ on one occasion when they were holding a protest, as he swept past in his Mercedes. The most worrying anecdote was the one involving the attempted suicide of a former member of staff who had been befriended and then ruthlessly used and set up by Glyn Williams and Duckula…

This is the Glyn and Duckula who kicked up merry hell when an English member of staff – who had learnt Welsh and to a very high standard as well – was appointed to a lecturing post in their dept. Such was the grief that someone from the Glyn/Duckula contingent contacted the London-based broadsheets and the English speaking Head of Dept received calls from journos accusing him of discrimination against Duckula’s (Welsh speaking) mate who had applied for the job. He was too decent to explain to the journo about the paedophile gang and the near suicide of a member of staff.

Happy days!

When Bob Parry was elected Chairman of the County Council, Councillor Richard Owain Jones, who represents the Twrcelyn ward, was elected as the Vice-Chairman of the County Council.

Richard Owain Jones works as a paramedic. We’re hearing a great deal from Wales about Dangerous Psychiatric Patients Attacking Ambulance Staff.

Bob Parry probably also knows Prof J.B. Owen, the ‘bastard’ (in the words of someone who worked with him) who presided over the dysfunctional Agriculture Dept at UCNW (Bangor University) for so many years and who seemed to have something to do with the problems that Mary Wynch encountered with Dafydd and the paedophiles when she worked as a secretary in that dept (see post ‘Not Seem Since The 80s – Carwyn’).

Bob Parry will have known the late brother of the former Tory MEP (1979-89), Beata Brookes. Beata’s brother was a farmer in Denbighshire, a leading light in the FUW and a Freemason. It was however Beata who did the real damage. Beata was a social worker for Denbighshire County Council, then a member of Clwyd Health Authority as well as a member of Clwyd County Council Social Services Committee. Lest anyone was in danger of escaping from the grip of Dafydd and the paedophiles, their mate Beata was also a member of the Family Practitioners Committee for Clwyd, a member of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine and was involved in many charities in north Wales for ‘the disabled and mentally handicapped’. Beata will have known about Michael and Ann Craft’s campaign to sexually liberate those imprisoned by the paedophiles at Bryn-y-Neuadd (see post ‘The Old Devils’).

The paedophiles’ friends made a huge effort in 1983 to get Beata into Parliament but their plans were scuppered by Sir Anthony Meyer, the Tory MP for North West Clwyd, who undoubtedly knew what that lot were up to and who died an unsung hero.

For further details of the evil cow who was Beata Brookes and the many who assisted her, see post ‘The ‘Celtic Iron Lady’ and Yet More Recent History’.

One of the roles of High Sheriff is to act as the host for members of the judiciary.

Sir William Mars-Jones was the pupil master of Sir Ronnie Waterhouse. Mars-Jones became a High Court judge in 1969 and before that he was a well-known judge on the Chester and Wales Circuit. However prior to that, Mars-Jones was a Recorder in Birkenhead, 1959-65. Wherever there was a branch of Dafydd’s empire, there was William Mars-Jones…

Some of the many pies in which Mars-Jones had fingers were UCNW (Bangor University), the Garrick, the London Welsh Society and legal circles in London…

There are many interesting names listed as serving as High Sheriff of Denbighshire, or from 1974 after the local authority reorganisation, High Sheriff of Clwyd. Three others as well as David Mars-Jones leap out at me – David Foulk Myddelton of Chirk (1980); Noreen Louisa Edwards of Upper Colwyn Bay (1985); the Hon Lloyd Tyrell-Kenyon, Whitchurch, Shropshire (1986).

The Myddelton family were mates with Sir Ronnie Waterhouse. David Foulk Myddelton is listed as being a Director of the Orthopaedic Institute Ltd (1995-2001), which was part of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt NHS Trust. Professor Robert Owen – who organised the cover-up of the criminality of Dafydd, Tony Francis, Gwynedd Social Services, Clwyd and Gwynedd Health Authorities and the North Wales Police in 1989 (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’) – worked at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, as well as at Alder Hey Hospital and Liverpool Medical School (see post ‘In Memoriam – Professor Robert Owen’).

David Foulk Myddelton is described as being a ‘landowner from Wrexham’.

There is a David R. Myddelton who is the Emeritus Professor of Finance and Accounting at Cranfield University. David was educated at Eton and the Harvard Business School and is a chartered accountant. He was Professor of Finance and Accounting at Cranfield School of Management, 1972-2005, after which David Myddelton was Emeritus Professor. Since 2001 he has been Chairman of the Institute of Economic Affairs, which attracted a number of paedophiles’ friends (see post ‘The International Language Of Screaming’). David was for many years Chairman of the Cambridge Business Studies Project Trust and recently he served a three year term as President of the Economics and Business Education Association.

I really am impressed at how many of Thatcher’s friends and mentors had direct links to Dafydd and the paedophiles. I previously had just thought of Thatch as being a dim, greedy, petit bourgeois philistine who wanted to run the world on the same basis as a grocer’s shop.

Noreen Louisa Edwards was Chairman of Gwynedd Health Authority throughout the years of abuse of patients, the inexplicable disappearance of the funds and the eventual near collapse of the Health Authority in the late 1980s which resulted in questions in the House and necessitated the intervention of the bigger and better paedophiles’ friends from the Welsh Office (see post ‘A Visit To Gwynedd Archives’).

Noreen had worked for many years as an Angel.

If only more women were employed in senior roles there would be such a culture change….

Noreen lived in that location favoured by the paedophiles and their friends, Colwyn Bay. There was a lot of them out there – Prof Robert Owen, Gordon Anglesea, Huw Vaughan Thomas and Enid Rowlands, Nigel Mannering Berry and many more.

The Hon Lloyd Tyrell-Kenyon will have been the man who is now the 6th Baron Kenyon. It was the 6th Baron Kenyon’s brother Thomas Tyrell-Kenyon who was known by Clwyd Social Services to be sexually abusing boys in care. On one occasion after spending the night with a boy in the Crest Hotel in Wrexham and taking ‘explicit’ photos of them together, Thomas Tyrell-Kenyon made a complaint of theft against the boy. The boy was sent to a detention centre. Thomas faced no charges. Thomas died of an HIV related illness in 1993.

Thomas’s dad the 5th Baron Kenyon was the most senior Freemason in north Wales, a member of the North Wales Police Authority, Chairman of Clwyd Health Authority, a member of Flintshire County Council, a magistrate, the President of UCNW, a Director of Lloyd’s Bank and many more things as well (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Another High Sheriff of Clwyd (1990) who is worth a mention is Sir David Watkin Williams-Wynn, the 11th Baronet. Sir David is ‘a member of the surviving Welsh nobility and is the closest known living heir of the Princely House of Aberffraw, the former ruling family of Gwynedd and the Principality of Wales who were deposed in the 1282 Edwardian Conquest of Wales’.

Sir David’s ‘direct ancestors, the Williams family, were an important Parliamentary and landowning family from Denbighshire’ ‘who in the 17th Century married into the famous Wynn family of Gwydir the direct patrilineal descendants of Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd 1137–1170, and the only surviving branch of that dynasty. On the death of Sir John Wynn in 1719, his direct heiress Jane Thelwall inherited the Wynnstay estate and the claim to the Aberffraw legacy, and her husband Watkins Williams adopted the “Wynn” family name (thought to be derived from Gwynedd) in honour of his wife’s princely heritage.’

Surely Dafydd Iwan should be recording a tribute to such a man?

Yma O Hyd!

Sir David lives in St Asaph. He was President of the Denbigh and Flint Agricultural Show in 1992. In 2008 it was widely reported that Sir David’s daughter Alexandra – a student at the  Royal Academy of Arts – had modelled nude for Lucian Freud. So Alexandra will have a few impressive stories to tell then. Sir David’s heir is his son Charles Edward Watkin Williams-Wynn (born 1970), (who might be known as Iorwerth I). In the continued discussion of potential Welsh independence his name is occasionally brought forward as a theoretical candidate in Welsh monarchy scenarios.

Sir David is a Director of the family business, Wynnstay Farming Company. Of which Lord Alex Carlile, a man closely associated with the paedophiles’ friends, is also a Director.

Lord Carlile lost a friend to whom he ‘paid tribute’ just a few days ago – Lady Shirley Hooson, the widow of Lord Emlyn Hooson. Emlyn Hooson was a paedophiles’ friend of yesteryear and Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire, 1962-79.

Hooson was a farmer’s son from Denbighshire and went to Denbigh Grammar School, then onto what is now Aberystwyth University to read law. After serving in the Royal Navy, Hooson became a barrister on the corrupt Chester and Wales Circuit. Hooson was the QC who represented Ian Brady and Myra Hindley at their trial at Chester Assizes in 1966. Ronnie Waterhouse acted as junior prosecuting counsel at the same trial. There were no hard feelings – Ronnie was a good mate of Hooson’s and used to stay at the Hoosons’ home regularly.

Hooson was Leader of the Chester and Wales Circuit, 1971-74; a Crown Court Recorder, 1972-91 and a Deputy High Court judge.

Hooson became Chairman of the Liberal Party in Wales in 1955 and was elected to the Liberal Party executive in 1965. He contested the Liberal Party leadership in 1967 but withdrew in favour of Jeremy Thorpe.

Emlyn Hooson was a member – along with Lisa Nandy’s grandfather Lord Frank Byers and David Steel – of the Liberal Party’s 1971 secret inquiry into Jeremy Thorpe (see posts ‘My How Things Haven’t Changed’ and ‘He Knows Where The Bodies Are Buried’). He heard directly from Norman Scott about Jeremy’s activities, including Jeremy’s serious harassment of and threats toward Norman. Norman provided the inquiry with proof that Jeremy had made regular payments to him, which Norman maintained was hush money.

Hooson was alleged to have been appalled by Jeremy’s conduct, but Jeremy remained as Liberal leader and no-one piped up about Jeremy, not even when years later he was put on trial for conspiring to murder Norman. Norman was roundly insulted by the judge and the media and Hooson kept quiet.

Thorpe was cleared of all charges on 22 June 1979. On 26 July 1979 Emlyn Hooson took up his seat in the Lords.

Hooson introduced the Government of Wales Bill on St David’s Day 1967, taking one of the first steps to the formation of the Welsh Assembly.

Emlyn Hooson was Chair of the Governors at the London Welsh School, where his daughters Sioned and Lowri were pupils.

Hooson was a member of the ITV Advisory Council.

In 1985 Hooson became a non-executive Director of Laura Ashley and became Chairman in 1995. He was Chairman of the Trustees of the Laura Ashley Foundation, 1986-97. It’s a pity that Emlyn is dead, because he might have been able to shed light on the hoo haa that engulfed Laura Ashley after Laura was found dead and her widower Bernard took up the reins at the company.

Hooson was Chairman of Severn River Crossing PLC, the company operating the Severn Bridge and the Second Severn Crossing, 1991-2000.

Emlyn Hooson was President of the National Eisteddfod in 1966 and was a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards. He was President of the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen, 1987-93.

Can anyone see a paedophiles’ friend hidden in the picture?

Lord Hooson sat for the Liberal Democrats in the Lords ‘where he was active in improving the Mental Health Act’. The Mental Health Act that Dafydd continued to break with impunity, again and again and again.

Lord Alex Carlile was a member of Hooson’s chambers in Chester. The Hoosons and Carliles were close friends for years and Carlile was the Lib Dem MP for Hooson’s former seat of Montgomeryshire, 1983-97.

Carlile was someone who did ask a few awkward questions about the case of Mary Wynch but remained quiet for ever after once he had been told in 1994 that Mary had been ruined by Home Secretary Michael Howard the previous year (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’). Carlile bagged his peerage in 1999.

Lord Hooson’s funeral service was held at the China Street Welsh Presbytarian Chapel, Llanidloes and Lady Hooson’s is to be held there as well.

Lady Hooson was a member of Montgomeryshire District Council and Llanidloes Town Council for decades. She was Vice-Chairman of Montgomeryshire District Council when Glyn Davies, the present Tory MP for Montgomeryshire, was Chairman, 1985-89. Glyn and Shirley Hooson had already served on the Council together for many years.

Glyn Davies is rather different from most politicians, but he must know about some of the skulduggery that Hooson, Carlile et al kept quiet about because he has been around for so long. He surely must also know about the ‘care homes’ for kids as well as for people with disabilities and/or mental health problems which have sprung up all over his part of Wales in recent years and are often of very questionable quality.

Glyn Davies is the former Chairman of the Development Board for Rural Wales and was a member of the Welsh Tourist Board, as well as the hub for crooks that was the WDA.

Emlyn Hooson spoke in the Lords on law reform and drug trafficking. He should have popped up to north Wales and he’d have seen for himself how effective his contributions to the Mental Health Act, law reform and drug trafficking were. Addicts were telling each other that they really like Dafydd because ‘he’ll give you anything that you want, anything at all’. I was told repeatedly that ‘peer guides’ working for Dafydd’s charity CAIS were flogging drugs to the clients.

In 1992 I was in the Royal Oak in Rachub with a friend. I very rarely went into the Royal Oak, but my friend wanted to go in so we did. We had been in there for 20 mins or so when a young man approached us and offered to sell us ‘anything we wanted’ with regard to drugs. He approached us because he saw my friend smoking a joint. No we didn’t buy anything off him but we did spend a long time chatting to him. He was ‘under the care’ of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team and supplemented his income by drug dealing. We began discussing the thugs who staffed the Arfon Team and this young man revealed that his key worker was Slob Ingham. Had he been intimidated, harassed, arrested or assaulted by Slob Ingham like so many others had? Not at all. He thought that Slob was a drunken idiot but this young man didn’t have any trouble with him. Of course he didn’t, Slob’s patient was one of the drug dealers helping the distribution network and Slob knew it.

This wasn’t a one off. In 1999 I was living on a village on Anglesey. By that time the Hergest Unit’s ‘policy’ was to refuse to admit virtually anyone as an inpatient because patients ‘had to take responsibility’ and there was a flat refusal to touch patients with drug and alcohol problems. People with addictions were dying and going off to prison at an astounding rate. Yet there was a young woman in our village who was causing havoc. She was a heroin addict with two frail vulnerable parents whom she was assaulting and robbing on a regular basis and she occasionally went for other people as well. She was repeatedly arrested for dealing, for theft and for assault. Yet she led an utterly charmed life. No prison sentences no matter how many final warnings the magistrates gave. When the crunch came and the law was obliged to act, she was given the option that had died out years previously – a bed in the Hergest Unit! The villagers who were unacquainted with the paedophiles of north Wales all believed that they were witnessing how soft on crime the justice system was. No, they were witnessing the degree of protection afforded to one of Dafydd’s dealers.

Whilst this young woman was creating chaos and had her mum and dad living in fear, there were constant media reports of the very serious problem with heroin that existed in Llangefni and how shocking it was that a former market town had come to this. Where was this young woman flogging her wares? Llangefni. She even applied to be housed there and no doubt she was successful. Everyone knew who the purveyors of heroin were in Llangefni – they were Dafydd’s patients who were being ‘helped’ so much by him and CAIS.

Dafydd lived in Talwrn, a village about three miles away from Llangefni.

The rest of us were being denied healthcare and arrested for telling secretaries that Alun Davies was a fat idiot. And when we were threatened or attacked by dealers and addicts the police did not even record our complaints.

The GPs surgery that served the village in which I and the young woman addict lived was in a the neighbouring village, Bodorgan. There were two GPs there, a Dr Medwyn Williams and a Dr Richard Williams – I don’t know if they were related. Dr Medwyn Williams was on the local CHC and seemed very proactive. He was making public statements regarding the inadequacy and chaos that was presiding in Ysbyty Gwynedd, particularly in the Hergest Unit. Every time that I witnessed Dr Medwyn Williams in action he seemed very reasonable. He was not afraid to sympathise with mental health patients and admit to them that things were so bad at the Hergest Unit that they would not be able to access treatment no matter how serious their difficulties.

Dr Richard Williams was so different that it was difficult to imagine how Medwyn Williams worked with him. Richard Williams was uninterested in his patients, spent the minimum amount of time with them and when they were obviously so ill that by anyone’s standards they could have done with a mental health service, he took a leaf out of the Hergest Unit’s book and blamed the patients for their own problems. Richard Williams knew about sin city which was Llangefni and he knew about the young woman addict in our village and the genuine risk that she presented to everyone. He didn’t give a stuff.

The Anglesey Community Mental Health Team was located in Llangefni, as was the Drug and Alcohol Team. They only had to step out of their offices to witness the evidence of their own failure.

Shirley Hooson is not the only paedophiles’ friend to have left for heaven over the past few days. The Daily Post Online published a tribute to Tecwyn Thomas, the ‘backbone of Gwynedd politics’, who has died aged 81 years.

Mr Thomas served as a member of Gwynedd County Council and Caernarfon Town Council as well as an election agent in Parliamentary and Assembly elections and in many other roles in the Labour Party and trade union movement.

Tecwyn’s son Ian Thomas said: ‘My father served as Chair of Welsh Labour at the critical time when Rhodri Morgan was negotiating the One Wales coalition agreement and held many senior roles in Welsh Labour, campaigning hard for Welsh Labour’s message during election campaigns’.

So not only was Tecwyn one of the many who knew nuzzing about the paedophile gang that kept themselves busy in Gwynedd County Council’s children’s homes for years, but he propped up the oaf Rhodri – who also knew nuzzing, although his own wife Julie was a colleague of the paedophiles of Wales – whilst Rhodri formed a coalition Gov’t in 2007 with the oaf Ieuan Wyn Jones, who also knew nuzzing.

Alun Pugh, the former Labour MP for Clwyd West, 1999-07, stated that ‘Tecwyn Thomas was hugely respected across our nation’. I think that you’ll find Alun that most people had never heard of Tecwyn, although as a paedophiles’ friend yourself (see post ‘People With Energy’), you’ll have been very grateful to Tecwyn for helping you to keep the lid on the barrel of crap well nailed down.

Being a long serving Gwynedd County Councillor who knew nuzzing, Tecwyn will have known a few other old timers who also knew nuzzing. Dafydd Iwan of course, the former President of Plaid and leader of Gwynedd County Council who knew so leetle that he wrote a song in tribute to Dr Dafydd Alun Jones. Before Dafydd Iwan removed all references to that ditty from planet earth, I’m sure that I saw a bit of PR explaining that Dafydd Iwan had written the song in tribute to the ‘brave Welsh psychiatrist’.

Seimon Glyn is a an old favourite on Gwynedd County Council. Seimon was a Plaid Councillor but joined Llais Gwynedd some years ago after internal strife and accusations that the Plaid Councillors were stale and defending vested interests. Which was true, but I’m not sure that Seimon is quite the People’s Voice either.

Seimon came under an unfair and sustained attack by the Welsh Mirror – or as it was known at the time, the Anti-Welsh Mirror – years ago when he was campaigning with Cymuned on issues of the threat to the Welsh language and the rocketing property prices in Gwynedd as the result of the in-migration of people from England with a lot more money than local people. Seimon had identified a very real problem and I thought that he was quite right to raise it, people in rural Gwynedd who were not on high incomes were being priced out of everywhere. Furthermore, although some English incomers embrace the Welsh language and are very keen to learn Welsh along with their children, some people are very hostile to it.

However Seimon was ignoring something just as important at the very time that he was campaigning with Cymuned – organised sex trafficking in north Wales. Seimon knew all about Prestwood People Trafficking Ltd (see post ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’). How do I know this? Because after I had witnessed the horrors at Prestwood myself, I rang Seimon and told him what was going on. I rang Seimon because I was friendly with people in Cymuned and they suggested that I contact him because he was campaigning on matters affecting rural north Wales.

Seimon did listen to what I said and he later admitted that after I spoke to him he then investigated Prestwood himself and discovered that my allegations were correct. Seimon didn’t witness patients being abused but he did confirm that Prestwood were breaking employment law and employing unsuitable people without interviewing them, checking qualifications or references or carrying out CRB checks.

Seimon told me that he wouldn’t be following it up because he was too busy with Cymuned. I mentioned this to another person and they suggested that in view of the fact that whoever was behind Prestwood were obviously seriously nasty organised criminals, perhaps Seimon might have felt that it was safer to raise it with the appropriate authorities without telling anyone.

So I waited to see if anyone put Prestwood out of business. They didn’t. Ten yeaars after I told Seimon what was going on, Prestwood was still in business. It only came to a stop when Suzanne Hamlett, one of the people traffickers running the place, died.

Seimon Glyn is a social worker. He would have known exactly how to raise the alarm re Prestwood. Seimon was a children’s social worker with Gwynedd County Council when the paedophiles were in action. Seimon told the Waterhouse Inquiry that he never witnessed any children being abused.

Seimon was campaigning with Cymuned and ignoring what was happening at Prestwood during those months towards the end of the Waterhouse Inquiry and at the time of the publication of the Waterhouse Report.

Some five years ago Seimon reported a Plaid Councillor for putting children at risk after the Plaid Councillor had posted a photo of his baby next to an ash tray and an empty lager can on social media for a joke. The Plaid Councillor was investigated, nearly lost his job at Bangor University and I think was suspended as a Councillor. Seimon told the media that as a former social worker he knew how important it was to protect children.

The children in Gwynedd children’s homes when Seimon worked as a social worker were gang raped, beaten and starved.

One of Seimon’s fellow Llais Gwynedd Councillors is Peter Read. I first encountered Peter Read in about 2009 when he was at a public meeting confronting Mary Burrows, the then newly appointed CEO of the newly formed Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Mary had really pissed the paedophiles’ friends off by trying to clean up and she’d dared to properly investigate a few very serious complaints. The paedophiles’ friends had begun a co-ordinated attempt to bring her down. I didn’t know who Peter was at the time but I could hear him in the row behind me discussing tactics with his partner in crime and they were making insulting racist comments about Mary (Mary was American). Peter later cross-examined Mary as aggressively and as rudely as he could.

Who was Peter’s mate with whom tactics were being discussed? It was a member of the CHC – Glanville Owen. Glanville was the senior manager employed by Gwynedd Social Services with responsibility for children’s homes whilst the paedophile gang operated in those homes. Glanville appeared before the Waterhouse Inquiry and explained that he knew nuzzing.

Last year Gwynedd County Council acquired a new leader after the previous leader paedophiles’ friend Dyfed Edwards stood down. The new leader is Dyfrig Siencyn. Mr Siencyn is a Plaid Councillor who is also a Dolgellau Town Councillor. He previously Chaired the Gwynedd County Council Services Scrutiny Committee, which investigates issues in education and care services.

As Dyfrig has been investigating the care services can he explain why serious complaints about those services have been ignored for years and now why there are barely any care services available? Perhaps Dyfrig can also explain why no-one knew about the team of social workers located at Dolgellau whose specific responsibility was to find accommodation for disabled people – disabled people were simply told that there was no accommodation available by their key workers in the Community Mental Health Teams.

Being Of Dolgellau, Dyfrig will know someone else who knew nuzzing – Malcolm John, a lecturer in social work at Bangor University (see post ‘Local Accessories’). Malcolm John lives at Dolgellau. Malcolm previously worked as a social worker whilst the paedophile gang did its best. What his colleagues at Bangor didn’t know – although they did suspect that he had another job somewhere because he was so infrequently seen in the University – was that Malcolm was working as a fostering and adoption consultant…

Dafydd claimed to have spotted the world’s first case of PTSD at a clinic in Dolgellau, it was how he became an expert in PTSD and ended up giving evidence to a Commons Committee. Gwynedd County Council ought to put a commemorative plaque on the wall of whichever building housed that clinic.

No doubt Dafydd also was the first to describe those other well known psychiatric conditions which afflict so many in north Wales –  ‘chapel psychosis’ (sufferers refuse to attend regular services) and cottage ignition syndrome…

‘Shut your mouth about DA’. ‘Get out of north Wales and don’t ever come back.’

‘We didn’t know.’

You all knew. The whole bloody lot of you.

Someone else who knew nuzzing despite having witnessed it herself was a Portugese lady called Evelyn who used to work in the old psych wards at Ysbyty Gwynedd and later at the Hergest Unit. I think that when she was working at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Evelyn was employed as an occupational therapy assistant. Evelyn had started training as a nurse some years before at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and had given it up. When someone asked Evelyn why she didn’t complete her training, I heard Evelyn tell them that the Angels at Denbigh were dreadful, they were ‘patient batterers’. When I heard Evelyn saying this I thought ‘well at least someone has some standards’.

So I was certainly surprised when I witnessed a scene involving Evelyn a few weeks later. A young mother had been admitted to the mental health ward at Ysbyty Gwynedd – just before the Hergest Unit was built – and she was very, very distressed. She was threatening to sue Gwynedd Health Authority. It transpired that she had been unlawfully arrested and taken to the North Wales Hospital – which was the standard mode of entry into Denbigh – because she had experienced post-natal depression. She had been forcibly dragged from her home, separated from and refused access to her baby and had been treated appallingly at Denbigh. She had then been transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd in a very great hurry when someone at Denbigh realised that this was no former resident of a children’s home who could be kicked about – this young woman was from a middle class Welsh family and she was beginning a career in politics. I think that she was involved with Plaid.

My God they were worried. Evelyn was dispatched to sit with the young woman and ply her with cups of coffee and soothing words. The young woman was repeating ‘that place is a bin, they are abusing the patients there’. Evelyn responded by saying ‘oh no, no, no, they’re not, you were just so upset that you misunderstood’.

‘Patient batterers’ Evelyn – it was why you resigned.

It got better. As the young woman fumed and threatened to bring down the forces of hell onto the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, a member of staff sat with her constantly and explained that there was a whole programme of activities for patients at Ysbyty Gwynedd and perhaps she would like to join the Women’s Group run by Dr Dadie Francis. Women’s Group! That was the first that any of us had heard about a Women’s Group and we’d been there for weeks, left with bugger all facilities except for the usual TV and room for the smokers. Hilarious – a whole programme of activities was arranged, I presume solely for this young woman, to try to convince her that the three days in Denbigh had all been a bad dream…

So somewhere out there is a woman who will now be in her 50s who has political connections who had a glimpse of what was happening to the rest of us before the distress flare was sent up and the lifeboat in the form of Sadie Francis and a hastily convened Women’s Group arrived.

I have no idea who the young woman was. She wouldn’t speak to the rest of us – she was probably told that we were all dangerous – and she spent her entire time accompanied by members of staff who was very, very nice to her…

A few years later I watched another patient who could have inflicted real damage receive rather better treatment than the rest of us – a lady called Elizabeth Carter who sadly died not long after her stay in the Hergest Unit. Elizabeth had cancer and had become depressed. She was spoken to kindly, was never threatened with arrest or told that she had a personality disorder. No, Elizabeth was treated as a friend and an equal by Angels and Top Docs alike. I watched Elizabeth writing every day but she obviously wasn’t writing a diary. Then I noticed that the Angels were giving her lots of facts and figures about the Hergest Unit and she was taking notes.

Elizabeth was a journalist! She worked for Dafydd’s friends on the Bangor and Anglesey Mail and one of her last articles was to be about the wonderful facilities at the Hergest Unit. Elizabeth was a patient at the Hergest Unit before it had really started to disintegrate, but the cracks were showing. A patient had been tasered – I understand that this was the first case in the UK of the police being called to an inpatient unit and tasering a patient – and the suicides had started happening on a frighteningly frequent basis.

Elizabeth Carter was not tasered. Before Elizabeth died, a very flattering article about her wonderful care at the Hergest Unit was published.

Elizabeth was a patient at the Hergest Unit just as all the fuss about the paedophile ring in north Wales being concealed at the highest levels of Gov’t kicked off…

Now for a personal message to Spike, who lived in Rachub at the same time as I did, years ago. I have been told that word has got out about this blog and that there is a healthy readership among my old neighbours and that Spike knows about it. Spike was the son of two neighbours who were really good to me as the paedophiles’ friends had me repeatedly arrested, tried to set fire to my house etc. Unfortunately when Spike got older he showed himself to be rather different to his mum and dad and he was involved in some fairly sordid deals with the paedophiles’ friends to shaft me – I don’t know how much he was paid or by whom, but it was clear that something unpleasant was happening. I don’t think that his mum and dad had any idea of what he was doing.

Now that Spike has read this blog he knows why both his mum and dad died of cancer at relatively young ages after the Top Docs ‘didn’t realise’ that they had cancer. By the time the diagnoses were made, the cancers were too far advanced for effective treatment. Spike’s parents did not receive the care that would have prolonged, if not have saved, their lives after Spike’s mum told people that she would provide a witness statement concerning the conduct of the paedophiles’ friends towards me whilst I lived in Rachub.

I hope that you can live with yourself Spike. The Top Docs and paedophiles’ friends really weren’t worth doing a deal with.

The Top Docs continue to do battle in the wake of the death of Baby Alfie. The media today has been nothing but wall to wall comment about how the Top Docs and Angels did all they could to Save Alfie, as they always do for all patients. I’ve avoided most of it, I think that I can guess what the articles will say. I am sure that there were indeed some Top Docs and Angels who did do their best for Alfie. But because of the sort of people who are systematically promoted to senior positions in the NHS, they will have been hampered and constrained by those around and above them.

Spike has now found out that pretending that the sort of events that I have described on this blog don’t happen is not a good idea.

I did read one Alfie-related article, the one written by Henry Marsh in ‘The Guardian’. Henry Marsh is a recently retired neurosurgeon who is a prolific writer. He writes well and I imagine that he was a very good Top Doc and indeed one who did the best for his patients. Henry Marsh worked at the Atkinson Morley and St George’s Hospital Medical School. He knew that one of his colleagues was imprisoned for his part in a child porn ring, that other colleagues of his concealed the rest of the paedophile ring for years and that there was also a big problem with research fraud in St George’s.

Neither has anyone explained how Alder Hey, who does its best for all patients at all times and always has, somehow employed Professor Robert Owen, who concealed a paedophile gang in north Wales.

Robert Owen has died recently as have quite a few of those who protected Dafydd and the paedophiles, so I hope for Alfie’s sake that if an afterlife does exist, there is a rather better regulatory system in place at the Pearly Gates than is provided by the GMC.

The GMC is currently advertising for a new Chair after Sir Terence Stephenson has stepped down. So if anyone wants a job which involves making a lot of loud noises about standards and excellence and accountability and protecting the public whilst ignoring the most serious criminal conduct of Dafydd and his ilk in the face of numerous complaints from people who have suffered harm or who’s nearest and dearest have died unnecessarily, the GMC wants you…

I see that the Baroness of Ely has retreated from the possibility of standing as a candidate for FM. In her desire to get down with the kids, the Baroness has established a website called Beyond the Cardiff Bay Bubble. In previous times I would enjoy logging on to that website and having a real laugh, but I’m too busy with this blog. The Baroness does of course have plenty of life experience Beyond the Bubble. She has experience of life in Atlantic College, Wales’s most expensive private school and she also has experience of life in the House of Lords.

The sociologist Richard Sennett’s books often include the line ‘I was talking to the janitor’. I really like Richard Sennett’s work and that of his wife Saskia Sassen is even better, but I always noticed that Richard Sennett did rely very heavily on the janitor for his info regarding Life at the Bottom. I went one better than Richard Sennett. I was the janitor.

Beat that Eluned.

Always On The Side Of The Children

Readers familiar with previous posts will be aware that some rather surprising people have been employed as civil service mandarins with responsibilities for Gov’t Departments concerned with health and welfare. My post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’ introduced Bing Spear, who was the Home Office’s Chief Inspector in its Drugs Branch, 1977-86 and before that was Deputy Chief Inspector, 1965-77. Bing certainly kept odd company for a mandarin – his intimate knowledge of addicts down on their luck as well as of their sexual partners, their dealers and their drug habits, together with his personal friendships with Top Doctors who had a tendency to find themselves accused of dealing drugs, his transferring of a particularly ‘soft’ Inspector to cover Dr Dafydd Alun Jones’s patch in north Wales and Bing’s mysterious health problems suggest that Bing was an addict himself and very likely corrupt to boot.

My post ‘Socio-Political Context of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’ describes how, from 1987, an even more worrying mandarin, Brian McGinnis, was employed as Under-Secretary of State for Mental Health in the DHSS, with responsibility for high security hospitals. McGinnis was the man who was instrumental in forming the Broadmoor task force which included Jimmy Savile among its members. After McGinnis had retired and was taking on voluntary work, in 2002 Bromley Council ended his involvement with children with learning disabilities and in 2005 Croydon Council banned him from working with children.

Rupert Hughes was another mandarin from that era, the civil servant who was responsible for the Children’s Act 1989, which has since caused a great many problems. The Children’s Act was drafted and passed in the wake of the chaos of the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal in 1987, but one only has to look at what is happening to ‘looked after’ children today to know that the Children’s Act has failed dismally. Rupert Hughes is described as being the ‘father’ of the Act and Brenda Hale – now the President of the Supreme Court of the UK – the ‘mother’. See post ‘In The Courts’ for further information concerning Brenda and why she is not the feminist hero that she advertises herself as being. Rupert Hughes was the Assistant Secretary of the Children’s Division in the DHSS – he joined the civil service after graduating from Oxford and initially worked in the MAFF. Later he moved to the Cabinet Office and then in 1984 he joined the DHSS. He enjoyed the support of Lord Mackay of Clashfern, the Lord Chancellor – who kept the lid on the sleaze and horror which swirled around the wife-beating drunken alleged child molester Sir Nicholas Fairbain (see post ‘More On Baroness Patricia Scotland QC – And Her Very Sleazy Friends’)  – and the Health Secretary Ken Clarke, whom I have now concluded did absolutely nobody any favours but himself (see post ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz’). Rupert Hughes was described as having a ‘fairly free hand’ with the DHSS. After eleven years at the top of the Children Services Division of the DHSS, years during which there was scandal after scandal involving the serious abuse of, the trafficking for sex of and even the deaths of children in care, Rupert retired in 1995. After retirement Rupert Chaired the Michael Sieff Foundation and was a Fellow of the Centre for Social Policy at Dartington, Devon, Chairing the Centre for three years. Rupert was a member of the Reform Club and his partner was Priscilla Campbell Allen. The Reform Club was traditionally associated with the Liberal Party although today is has no official political affiliation. Jeremy Thorpe was an enthusiastic member of the Reform Club.

Regular readers will know that whatever the excesses of Rupert, the problems in the UK’s child care system started a long while before Rupert got his hands of the levers of power. There have been problems with children in care being abused for decades – although in previous eras sexual abuse didn’t get much of a mention, the issue discussed was usually that of ‘cruelty’ – but things seemed to escalate rapidly in the 1970s, which saw the large scale infiltration of children’s social services right across the country by paedophiles operating in gangs which were connected with each other and who had links with paedophiles and traffickers overseas.

The person who was appointed to the top of the tree by Ted Heath’s Gov’t in 1970 was Barbara Kahan, a social worker who was the Home Office’s Deputy Chief Inspector of the Children’s Dept. At that time the Home Secretary was Reginald Maudling who ended up resigning after he was involved in a major scandal linked to large scale corruption in business dealings. When the remit for child care was taken over by the DHSS in 1971, Kahan transferred to that Dept, to work under Secretary of State Sir Keith Joseph.

Barbara Kahan was someone who was at the heart of a system that was rotten throughout her whole career and became a good deal more putrefied whilst she was at the highest level. Kahan came from a Labour Party, Methodist family and in 1939 went to Newnham College, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge she re-started the University Labour Club, also worked for Richard Acland’s left-leaning Commonwealth Party and joined the Peace Pledge Union. After Cambridge, Kahan undertook a social science course at the LSE.

Kahan began her career in Dudley, West Midlands, where she was a child care officer, 1948-50 – she opened the first children’s home in Dudley. After that Kahan went to work for Oxfordshire Children’s Dept, which became absorbed into the social services in 1970 at the end of her time there. In 1964 Kahan became President of the Association of Childcare Officers.

When Kahan first began her career, most child care officers were women – often women like her ie. well-educated women from middle class backgrounds, frequently with a touch of radicalism. A lot of those women will have been very genuine. However by the late 60s/70s when the very real problem of residential homes for children being literally infiltrated by paedophile gangs began to grow, women served a very useful purpose – exactly the same purpose that women serviced in abusive institutions like the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. They were there to reassure the public that nothing dreadful could be going on – certainly not sexual abuse, because women are caring and they would never collude with such activity. Sadly they did and they did so regularly.

In my own case, Dr Sadie Francis (Dr X’s wife), Janice Davies, Jackie Brandt, Maggie Fookes and Bridget Lloyd all lied about me in statements to the police and in Court because Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) et al wanted to construct a picture of me as mad, bad and dangerous to know. That is much easier if it is women making the claims of being terrified – nothing shifts the criminal justice system like A Woman In Fear. Especially an Angel. If the children of the Woman In Fear can be mentioned to the police or in Court, so much the better. When I discovered that these women  were claiming to be terrified of me, I wrote to them to apologise and to say that if anything that I had ever said or done had frightened them, I was sorry. Those letters turned up in my medical records – along with documents written by those women themselves saying that they were not frightened of me and that in Bridget Lloyd’s case she knew that I wouldn’t recognise her even if I saw her. There were also letters and memos from managers and Top Doctors (most frequently Alun Davies, the manager of the mental health services in Gwynedd and Lucille Hughes, the Director of Gwynedd Social Services) and also from the crooked solicitor in the Welsh Office – Andrew Park – urging these people to contact the police and tell them that I had threatened them and that they were terrified. It was a conspiracy involving perjury on an industrial scale and their status as women who were ‘victims’ of mine was ruthlessly used by people who were facilitating a paedophile ring.

Other patients from north Wales who had cause to complain have shown me documents relating to their own cases in which the very same techniques were used which, in some cases, involved exactly the same ‘women in fear’. One man, after months of sheer frustration at the misconduct of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team – of which Brandt, Lloyd and Fookes were members – threw a cushion across the room in their office, snapped a leaf off of a pot plant and walked out, slamming the door. The police were called, told that he had threatened the Little Women, thrown furniture about and had broken the door. He was not told that such serious allegations had been made, but Tony Francis ordered him to write to the Arfon Team and apologise for upsetting them. So he did. Years later when his lawyer obtained his files, this man discovered that his letter of apology had been attached to the fictitious account of what had happened – so it looked as if he was indeed apologising for the heinous crimes that they had alleged and documented without his knowledge.

Again and again patients in north Wales told me that this had happened to them. The stories were remarkably consistent – that patients had been insulted or physically assaulted by male staff in the Arfon Team such as Keith Fearns and Bob Ingham, only to find that after they had complained about this the police would be on their doorstep because the Little Women had made statements. Little Women whom the patients often had never heard of.

One of the internal investigations into the serious abuse of children in the care of Clwyd County Council revealed the key role of Irene Train, a nurse who was promoted to senior management and colluded with the most appalling conduct (see post ‘Don’t Be Silly, He’s Nice’).

The Waterhouse Report – the cover-up of all cover-ups – mentions ‘caring’ women social workers who claimed to have been ‘just playful’ when children had complained of being kneed in the groin by them, slapped around the face, forced to strip, dragged along by their hair or had even been subjected to attempts to suffocate or smother them.

They may have been women but they were colleagues of a paedophile gang. The evidence against Lucille Hughes was so damning that even Sir Ronald Waterhouse named her as knowing that a paedophile ring was in operation but failing to act. Lucille was Dr Dafydd Alun Jones’s mistress.

Barbara Kahan will have known that the abuse of children in residential care was endemic. In her obituary we are told that she ‘believed in residential care’ ‘long after this approach had gone out of fashion’. Residential care went ‘out of fashion’ because it was realised that the system was brutal and attracted predators.

Whilst Kahan worked in Oxfordshire she introduced the payment of a special enhanced rate to people who fostered ‘difficult’ children. In north Wales and other regions, there is evidence that this policy resulted in callous, inappropriate people fostering numerous children because it was very profitable (see post ‘Tower Hamlets, Paul Boateng and Tessa Jowell’). Foster carers should be paid because it is a valuable and difficult job, but it is essential that they should be appropriately vetted. Paying sexually abusive thugs a lot of money to foster five or six children is not a particularly good idea.

Kahan’s obituary in ‘The Guardian’ observed that she never became Director of Social Services in Oxfordshire because she made ‘too many enemies’. One way of making enemies is to blow the whistle – but Kahan didn’t do this. Kahan didn’t become Director of Oxford Social Services, but in 1970 she was appointed Deputy Chief Inspector of the Children’s Dept by the Home Office. In 1970 the Home Office was directly managing Bryn Estyn, as well as Axwell Park Approved School in Gateshead. Axwell Park was at that time employing Matt Arnold and his friend Peter Howarth and there were complaints of boys being abused. In 1973 Arnold and Howarth both transferred to Bryn Estyn to work – where boys were abused. Howarth later died in prison after being convicted of a number of counts of sex offences against boys in his care. In 1971 Barbara became Assistant Director of the Social Work Service at the DHSS under Secretary of State Sir Keith Joseph. The Keith Joseph who consistently refused to hold an investigation into the deaths of more than 40 children at the notorious home The Beeches.

It was Keith Joseph who took receipt of the Finer Report in 1974 – the Finer Committee sat between 1969-73 on the subject of one parent families. Barbara Kahan was a member of the Committee.

Sir Keith Joseph was a barrister who was the Conservative MP for Leeds North East, 1956-87. Right where Savile, the paedophiles and their corrupt police officer friends were busy for the whole duration of Joseph’s time in Parliament. Joseph served as a Cabinet member in the Gov’ts of Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Ted Heath and Margaret Thatcher. Joseph was Secretary of State for Social Security, 1970-74. He was the intellectual force behind what became known as Thatcherism, but his own campaign for the Tory leadership died a death in Oct 1974 after he made a speech in Edgbaston about the ‘cycle of poverty’ among the lower orders and was rash enough to remark that what with the council house people breeding like rabbits and single mothers, ‘the balance of our human stock, is threatened’. There was outrage and he was never taken quite so seriously again. The speech had actually been written by Alfred Sherman, one of Thatcher’s gurus, which explains a lot. Papers released under the 30 year rule at the end of 2011 revealed that Joseph had considered that there should be a ‘managed rundown’ of Merseyside.

In 2014 former Tory activist Anthony Gilberthorpe claimed that whilst he was a young man he discovered that a number of Tory Ministers were holding sex parties with under-aged boys. Keith Joseph was one of the Ministers whom he named. Gilberthorpe maintained that he handed a detailed dossier about these matters to Thatcher in 1989.

I don’t think that there was any danger of Barbara blowing any whistles at all – and she obviously didn’t blow any when she reached the dizzy heights either. She remained as Assistant Director until 1980, by which time children were being trafficked to Europe by the paedophiles ‘looking after them’ and in north Wales and elsewhere were being found dead. By 1980 there had been a number of convictions of child care workers for physical assault and various sex offences in north Wales, as well as in other regions of the country – but Babs didn’t click. Babs retired from the civil service in 1980, but she didn’t put her feet up.

In 1980 Babs launched the Gatsby Project, a distance learning project for residential child care workers, and she directed the project until 1991, when it was absorbed into the Open University. It sounds great doesn’t it – except that Babs carried out the Gatsby Project with Peter Righton, who was an active member of PIE and was convicted of the possession of child porn in the early 1990s. Righton’s special interest was social work education.

Peter Righton was a leading social work teacher and academic who argued in his work that sexual relationships between adults and children were not damaging. He worked at Keele University in 1965 as a lecturer in social work and in 1968 he was appointed as a senior lecturer with, and became the Director of Education for, the National Institute of Social Work. The National Institute of Social Work was located in Tavistock Place, just down the road from BMA House. Tessa Jowell was a Fellow of the National Institute for Social Work, as of course was Babs. In 1971 Righton joined the NCB (National Children’s Bureau) and subsequently set up a unit there – he came out as gay in the same year. In 1973 Righton delivered the annual Barnardos lecture. He was also a Governor at a school for children with special needs.

Righton was close friends with Charles Napier, a paedophile teacher who had been banned from teaching in the UK. Charles Napier worked in a number of different countries and his correspondence with Righton includes discussions between the two of them regarding the high quality and beauty of the boys that Napier was encountering in various overseas destinations. Napier ended up obtaining a senior job with the British Council in Cairo before he was removed from his post as a result of trouble with the authorities concerning his sexual activities with children. Righton was based in the UK but he made frequent trips to Europe where he met up  and kept company with under-aged boys. Righton’s colleagues explained Righton constantly keeping company with teenaged boys by making reference to his commitment and abilities with children. Such explanations for paedophiles’ behaviour were certainly used in the 1970s. I can remember two teachers at the school that I attended whose conduct in relation to children was explained thus – one of those people was very deceptive and I don’t think that his colleagues did realise that his conduct towards the girls was very questionable, but the other one was a PE teacher who was so notorious that the kids nicknamed him ‘Fiddler’. Boys would openly tell people that they didn’t want to go into the showers if Fiddler was there and I watched Fiddler chase boys around the school trying to smack their bums for non-existent crimes. The teachers at that school undoubtedly knew what Fiddler was doing – he was promoted to the post of Deputy Head and in retirement coached boys at a football club in Bridgwater. The company that Righton kept and his activities I suggest put him in the same category as Fiddler – it was obvious to everyone that he was abusing children, but everyone was tying themselves up in knots to explain why he wasn’t.

In 1982 Peter Righton helped draft the Barclay Report, Sir Peter Barclay’s Report into the roles and tasks of social workers in England and Wales. The early 80s also saw Righton link up with Babs to deliver courses in child care.

Righton contributed a chapter to a notorious book by Brian Taylor, ‘Perspectives On Paedophilia’ (1981). Righton makes it clear in his chapter that he has no problem with adults having sex with children. Another contributor to the book was Belfast child psychiatrist Dr Morris Fraser who was convicted of a sex offence against a child but was nonetheless allowed to continue practicing by the GMC. The GMC legal assessor who worked on Fraser’s case was Patrick Mayhew, who later became Attorney General and Secretary of State for N Ireland under Thatcher. It was Patrick Mayhew who, when he was Attorney General, backed the mounting of cases against me brought by Gwynedd Social Services (see post ‘Some Big Legal Names Enter The Arena’) and then by Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) (see post ‘The Sordid Role Of Sir Robert Francis QC’), in which my imprisonment was sought for contempt of Court. In both cases the witnesses had perjured themselves and I now have documents that demonstrate that their own lawyers knew this – presumably Mayhew knew it as well. Morris Fraser later worked at UCL and at Springfield Hospital, the psychiatric hospital attached to St George’s Hospital Medical School. I was a patient at Springfield when the north Wales mental health services tried yet again to have me imprisoned on the basis of their perjury – Springfield witnessed all of it and did not lift a finger to help me, either medically or legally (see post ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London…’).

Documents forwarded to me from my lawyers last year show that what Springfield staff Dr Robin Jacobson, Dr Ruth White and Dr Alice Levinson were doing were having telephone conversations about me without my knowledge with Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and Dr Tony Francis – Tony Francis had helpfully suggested that they should also speak to Lucille Hughes about my ‘dangerousness’. I had never met Lucille Hughes. Correspondence had passed between Lucille Hughes and the social work dept at St George’s about me without my knowledge – although I had never had any contact with the social work dept at St George’s and was never offered any. Robin Jacobson had admitted in correspondence to his colleagues that Dafydd was sexually involved with patients. Despite knowing this, Professor Nigel Eastman told me that he thought that I ought to return to live in north Wales. Where presumably I could be shagged by Dafydd and then imprisoned for offences that I had not committed.

Morris Fraser was involved with the Azimuth Trust, a charity in Cornwall which provided sailing holidays for children. Fraser was eventually featured in a TV expose – as was Righton – by which time he was living in Southampton.

By the late 1980s Righton was living in Evesham and held a senior role at the Open University. In 1991 he contributed to the review of the Charter for Children. At this point Righton was charged – and later convicted – for child porn offences. He was sacked from the team working on the Charter. Babs was interviewed about her close working relationship with Righton and maintained that he was of course an evil genius who had conned her and many others in the world of social work and how upsetting this was. Which was certainly interesting because not only had Righton spent years explaining the beneficial effects of sex with children to his colleagues, but he had admitted to at least one of them that he had been involved sexually with children but they kept it quiet out of loyalty to a colleague. Babs also mentioned that Peter Righton was gay and being a social worker she didn’t discriminate against anyone on the basis of their private life.

The concept of a private life is one that is frequently deployed by professional people if others dare question their illegal or unethical conduct. Dr Tony Francis wrote furious letters to third parties about me accusing me of commenting on the ‘private lives’ of Gwynne the lobotomist and Dafydd. Not only were their lives anything but private – half of north Wales openly discussed their wrongdoing – but privacy is no defence against sexually exploiting patients, facilitating a paedophile ring and involving oneself in serious criminal activities. Yet according to Francis it was me who  should be investigated by the police and banged up – as should whoever gave me the info about the ‘private lives’ in question – because my comments about private lives just demonstrated how twisted and dangerous I was. I was interested to discover that in 1976 when Cyril Smith was investigated for child abuse, he wrote to the BBC expressing his concern that they might investigate the ‘private lives’ of politicians (see post ‘Dr Death’).

Other high points of Righton’s career included his role assisting with the Home Office Children’s Dept in 1970 – well Babs was working there, of course he’ll have been assisting – and his regular contributions to the journal ‘Social Work Today’, 1976-85. In some of those articles Righton promoted sex between children and adults. Righton also shared a platform with Sir Keith Joseph whilst Joseph was Secretary of State at the DHSS and was of course working with Babs.

After his conviction for child porn, outing as a paedophile and enforced retirement, Peter Righton moved into a cottage on the estate of Lord Henniker (see post ’95 Glorious Years’ for details about Lord John Henniker). Whilst Righton lived on the estate, children from Islington Council were taken to the estate for visits. There was at least one allegation that Righton had abused a child during one such visit.

In 1993 the Utting Report by William Utting noted that Righton was suspected of a ‘trade’ in young victims in Malta.

In April 1992 John Rea Price, the former Director of Social Services at Islington Council, was appointed Director of the NCB. Price had recently resigned after twenty years at Islington. Just after he resigned, the scandal of the paedophile ring that had operated in Islington children’s homes for years became public.

Babs Chaired the NCB, 1985-94 and was Vice-President, 1994-2000. Babs certainly mixed with the best. ‘The Times’, 1 Oct 1987 reported that a luncheon was held for the NCH (National Children’s Home) ‘to help children in danger and families in need’ at the Waldorf Hotel. The host was Lady Henrietta St George and speakers included Angela Rippon, Nerys Hughes and Norma Rose, the National Co-Ordinator of NCH Careline. Also present was Babs, a number of aristocrats and the wives of a variety of MPs, including David Heathcote-Amery’s wife.

Following her retirement, between 1983-99, Babs was a professional advisor to the Commons Select Committee on Social Services. So Babs advised that Committee whilst scandal after scandal in children’s social services exploded – and whilst politicians including Sir Peter Morrison, Cyril Smith and Greville Janner abused children in care. Babs advised throughout the Staffordshire Pindown Scandal, the Frank Beck Scandal in Leicestershire (see post ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’), the Islington Scandal, the Lambeth Scandal, the Cleveland Scandal, the Satanic Panics in Nottingham, Rochdale and the Orkneys and the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal.

If I was Babs I would have concluded from this that I must have missed something during all those years at the top, not simply that Peter Righton was an evil genius who had duped me. Not Babs. No – Babs was considered such a sage that after the Staffordshire Pindown Scandal was exposed, Allan Levy QC who, in 1990 was appointed to Chair the Inquiry into Pindown, specifically requested that Babs be his Co-Chair. Not that Levy had ever met Babs or so he reassured everyone – Levy just knew about Babs’s towering reputation.

The events comprising the Pindown Scandal occurred in Staffordshire, 1983-89. Tony Latham – a social worker who sounded remarkably like Keith Fearns of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team in that he was aggressive to clients, intimidated staff and ran a variety of businesses incompatible with a job as a social worker – had developed a ‘method’ of ‘behaviour control’ for children in care which he termed the ‘Pindown’ method. It wasn’t rocket science – Latham locked errant children in rooms by themselves in their nightclothes and frequently with no access to a bog. He didn’t just keep the children in isolation for a few hours. Or days. Or a week. The kids were locked in by themselves for months. Latham and the meatheads who worked as minions under him did this to 132 children in four different homes. Two children attempted suicide. I had information that things in Staffordshire were rather worse than even Pindown suggested. When I lived in north Wales I met a retired headmistress who had previously lived in Staffordshire and been a foster carer for Staffordshire Social Services. She fostered teenaged girls and one of them told her that she had been sexually abused by a social worker. The lady whom I met contacted the Social Services immediately and told them of her foster daughter’s allegations. Both girls were removed from her care hours later. She never saw them again. Her husband was then arrested and charged with sexually abusing the girl himself. He was remanded in prison. He was eventually found not guilty, but his wife was a headmistress – their lives in Staffordshire were over. They retired but the accusations and harassment continued – they ended up living in near hiding in north Wales.

Allan Levy QC was brought up in Lancashire and went to Hull University. He sat on the Committee for the Family Law Association, 1987-97; was a Committee Member of the Bar Council for two years; from 1988 was on the Council for JUSTICE; was a member of the Council of the Medico-Legal Society from 1990; and from 1990 until his death in 2004 Levy was the honorary legal advisor to the NCB. He also Chaired the BMA Steering Group which published ‘radical’ guidance concerning children’s and young people’s health in 2000. Levy was a supporter of the charity Young Minds and was an early advocate for the establishment of the post of Children’s Commissioner.

One of Levy’s high points was in 1987 when he acted for the official solicitor – representing the interests of a 17 year old girl with Down’s Syndrome, he took the case to the House of Lords to gain approval for the girl to be sterilised. The case caused a furore, but Levy got his way – those tubes of that teenager were ligated. In 1992 Levy Knew Best once more when he acted for the father of an adult accident victim who was a Jehovah’s Witness and refused blood transfusions. Old Levy obtained a Court Order forcing blood transfusions upon this adult with capacity.

Mark Fisher, the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, 1983-2010, was full of praise for Kahan and Levy’s Report into Pindown. Fisher was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge and was Principal of Tattenhall Centre of Education, Cheshire, 1975-83. He was a Councillor on Staffordshire County Council, 1981-85. So I suspect that Mark Fisher might have known quite a bit about the mistreatment of children in the care of Staffordshire long before the rest of the world found out about Pindown. The paedophile ring that operated in north Wales did of course also operate in Cheshire. Fisher was Principal of that College in Cheshire whilst Sir Peter Morrison was MP for Chester and was known to be abusing boys in north Wales and Cheshire.

Mark Fisher is the brother-in-law of Tory MP Sir Michael Grylls, who was involved in the Ian Greer Associates cash for lobbying scandal in 1987 along with Neil Hamilton, Michael Brown and Peter Morrison. Hamilton was MP for Tatton at the time, the neighbouring constituency to Chester and used to attend social events with Peter Morrison. Fisher is the uncle of Bear Grylls.

Mark Fisher has been the Patron of the National Benevolent Fund for the Aged since 1986. He was a member of the BBC’s Advisory Council, 1987-97, was a Council member of the Institute of Policy Studies, 1985-97 and was Deputy Pro-Chancellor of Keele University, 1989-97.

In the Parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009 it was revealed that Mark Fisher claimed over £17k in expenses, none of which he was asked to repay. He was the MP who claimed for a bottle of Toilet Duck and a 34p Kit Kat.

In 2009 it was discovered that Mark Fisher had been receiving £67k pa from the Qatar Museums Authority for ‘advice on the development of the Museums Authority’s plans’. Fisher was required to attend three Board meetings a year.

Babs asked her old mate Peter Righton for his advice whilst she was working on the Pindown Inquiry and Righton subsequently gave evidence to the Inquiry.

Kahan and Levy’s Report as a result of the Pindown Inquiry led to a Dept of Health initiative in 1998, ‘Quality Protects’, which was going to transform children’s services. So that’s why at present twenty years after Quality Protected almost every local authority in the country has a problem with children in care being sexually exploited and trafficked, why over thirty social service departments in England are in special measures and why there’s been a documentary on ITV tonight about endemic abuse in children’s homes.

Levy Chaired the ‘Vladimir and Barbara Kahan Trust’. Like Rupert Hughes and Jeremy Thorpe, Allan Levy was a member of the Reform Club.

Allan Levy did not ever marry or have children.

Babs died in 2000 and her obituary mentioned that ‘in recent years’ she had been employed as an expert witness for solicitors representing children who had been abused in residential care. I suspected that Babs might have generated a few bob by providing this service, in much the same way that Professor Nigel Eastman and his colleagues provide expert opinions in cases in which Top Doctors with whom they have worked or are even mates have damaged or killed people. It was not for no good reason that Nigel took over from Professor Robert Bluglass as the UK’s leading forensic psychiatrist. Top Doctor for hire – chimneys swept, gardens dug, drives tarmaced, criminal misconduct/sexual abuse/deaths concealed.

In 1955 Babs married a Top Doctor herself, Dr Vladimir Kahan, a child psychiatrist based in Oxford. Babs assisted Vlad with the work for his book ‘Mental Illness In Childhood’, published by Tavistock Publications. The ‘research’ for the book was conducted between 1959-65 at West Stowell House, a unit for ‘psychotic and severely disturbed children’, managed by Babs and funded by Oxford Regional Hospital Board. Of course at that time one group of children who were routinely labelled as ‘severely disturbed’ were those children who were known to be participating in sexual activity – even if they had clearly stated that they had been coerced into that activity. Vlad died in 1981.

Peter Righton wasn’t the only questionable person whom Babs worked with. Babs was the manager of Louis Minister when he worked for Oxfordshire Children’s Dept as a child care officer in 1966. Prior to that, Minster had been a child care officer in Hertfordshire for the NCH – some of those named in the Waterhouse Report had worked for the NCH. After two years at Oxfordshire, Minster was appointed as a community development officer in Liverpool in 1968. In 1971-72 Minster was Deputy Director of Social Services for Sunderland County Borough Council. At a later date, the Director of Social Services at Sunderland, Colin Smart, alerted police to the abuse of children at Witherwick House in Sunderland in the 1970s and 80s. In 1972 Minster was employed as a senior social work lecturer at Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology, Aberdeen. In 1975 Louis Minster was appointed as Director of Social Services for the London Borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames – he remained in post until 30 Oct 1984 when he was sacked, after a full meeting of the Council which was a closed meeting due to the ‘confidential’ nature of the business discussed. Minster himself claimed that his removal was ‘political’ – the Lib Dems had taken over control of the Council 11 months previously after a long period of Tory rule. Minster received a pay off, a pension and a new post in Glasgow training social workers.

Minster may have claimed that his removal was political but a great deal had happened to suggest otherwise. Whilst Minster was Director of Social Services in Richmond, it was alleged that children in the care of Richmond were taken to the notorious Elm Guest House nearby in Barnes, where they were molested at parties. Some of those alleged to have visited the Elm Guest House were Sir Peter Morrison, Cyril Smith, Anthony Blunt, Jimmy Savile, Sir Peter Hayman, Leon Brittan, Donald Naismith (the Director of Education at Wandsworth – Wandsworth Social Services provided the social workers who worked with St George’s Hospital Medical School/Springfield), Colin Peters QC and a number of police officers. Another alleged visitor was a man called Louis Minster.

It is alleged that the abuse at Elm Guest House began in 1977 and continued until at least 1982, when it was raided by the police. Richmond Council staff were given advance warning of the raid. Terry Earland, Head of Children’s Services at Richmond, stated that he had ‘no doubt’ that children were being abused at Elm Guest House. Because of this, Terry knew that a social worker would need to be present during the police raid, so he informed his boss Louis Minster of the need for a social worker. So if Louis was booked in to let his hair and trousers down at the Elm on that day, presumably he would be able to change his arrangements. The only surprise is that Louis didn’t double up as the social worker on duty himself.

Louis Minster was the boss of John Stingemore, the manager of Grafton Close children’s home in Richmond. In 2015 Stingemore was found dead shortly before he was due to stand trial, along with a priest, for a number of sex offences against boys as young as nine. It is alleged that boys from Grafton Close, as well as other Richmond homes, were taken to Elm Guest House to be used for sex.

The activities at Elm Guest House were the focus of Operation Fernbridge, 2013-15.

After the 1982 police raid on Elm Guest House, Carole Kasir, who ran it, was convicted of keeping a disorderly house. Police claimed that they did not find evidence of child abuse – so the warning to Louis Minster that a raid would be happening had been effective then. Carole Kasir advertised Elm Guest House as a gay rendezvous in ‘Gay News’ and elsewhere. In 1990 Carole Kasir was found dead, allegedly having committed suicide by an insulin overdose. Her friends dispute this and believe that she was murdered.

Louis retired to Malta. He lectured in social work at the University of Malta,  1988-97, then on an occasional basis until 2002. Minster also trained assistants to work on cases involving drug abuse. In Malta Louis also developed an interest in gerontology. The UN had established an Institute of Ageing on Malta and in 1989 Louis attended the Expert Group meeting as a representative of the University of Malta.

Malta would seem to be a bit of a magnet for child abusers – one of those recently arrested as a result of Operation Pallial who had abused children in north Wales was discovered living in Malta. The only thing that springs to mind re Malta for me is that Lady Juliet Bingley, who was Chair of MIND, 1979-83, whilst MIND colluded with Dafydd and the paedophiles in north Wales – Lady Juliet’s son William later became legal director of MIND and he then continued her sterling work in concealing Dafydd’s criminality – spent a few years living in Malta from 1959 as a result of her husband Admiral Sir Alec Bingley being Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Royal Navy. Whilst she was in Malta, Lady Juliet busied herself by setting up health and social care establishments and becoming a personal friend of the former PM of Malta, Dom Mintoff. Mintoff resigned as PM which resulted in Malta being governed directly from London. Juliet Bingley served as a ‘messenger’ between Mintoff and the Governor throughout the 70s and 80s.

There are a few familiar  names associated with Richmond-Upon Thomas – for a start Dr Alice Levinson who worked at St George’s/Springfield whilst they concealed the criminal activities of Dafydd and the paedophiles lives there and bases her private psychotherapy practice in Richmond. Levinson is too young to have been protecting paedophile gangs whilst Louis Minster reigned supreme at Richmond, but interestingly enough a Keith Vaz was the solicitor to Richmond Council in 1982. Keith also later popped up as a solicitor for Islington Council and at a law centre funded by Leicester City Council, whilst Islington and Leicester had problems with organised child abuse (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part I’).

The Chairman of the Social Services Committee in Richmond Council whilst Louis was busy was Dr Jenny Tonge – she is now Baroness Jenny Tonge. Jenny was a Richmond Councillor between 1981-90.

Jenny was born in Staffordshire and her parents were teachers. She went to Dudley High School, 1951-59 and then trained as a Top Doctor at UCL, graduating in 1964. Jenny joined the Liberal Party whilst she was at UCL. Jemmy has membership of the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Between 1968-78 Jenny worked as a GP and in family planning and was senior medical officer for the Women’s Services, Ealing, 1992-96.

One thing that Top Doctors who work in what is euphemistically called ‘family planning’ do get to hear about is women and girls being coerced into sex or sexually exploited – because they’re giving out the contraceptives or dealing with the resulting pregnancies and/or STDs.

In the 1992 General Election Jenny stood as the candidate for the Lib Dems for Richmond and Barnes. It was considered the Party’s most winnable seat but Tonge was not elected. I have found a reference to a ‘blaze of publicity’ which surrounded Jenny in 1992 but I haven’t discovered what the blaze was actually about.

The person who did win the seat of Richmond and Barnes in 1992 was the Conservative candidate Jeremy Hanley – Hanley was the sitting MP, having been first elected in 1983.  Jeremy Hanley was Conservative Party Chairman, 1994-95) and openly made jokes to his Parliamentary colleagues about Peter Morrison’s homosexuality.

Keith Vaz had stood as the Labour candidate in Richmond and Barnes in 1983 – he later found a home for his talents in Leicester East in 1987, in a constituency just down the road from that of Greville Janner.

Jenny Tonge made it into Parliament in 1997 when she won the newly created constituency of Richmond Park. She was the Lib Dem Commons Spokesperson for children, 2003-04. In Jan 2004 Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy sacked Jenny from the post – not because she had spent many years sitting on a Council and then was Chairman of the Social Services Committee whilst a paedophile ring raged within that Council’s Social Services, but because she made some inopportune comments about suicide bombers in Palestine.

Nonetheless Jenny was given a peerage in 2005.

In Jan 2009 Baroness Jenny was appointed the Lib Dem spokesperson for health. Cleggy sacked her in Feb 2010 over bizarre allegations that in the wake of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, an Israel Defence Emergency Aid hospital in Haiti was secretly harvesting organs. There were more fireworks in 2012 after Tonge made further remarks that were deemed anti-semitic and offensive. She ended up parting company with the rest of her party and sitting as an Independent Lib Dem. After Corbyn was elected as Labour Leader, Tonge stated that she was thinking of joining the Labour Party. The Deputy leader of the Labour Party Tom Watson said that Jenny would be most welcome, although it seems that she wasn’t tempted. Jenny resigned from the Lib Dems in Oct 2016.

Jenny was married to another Top Doctor, the late Dr Keith Tonge, whom she met in 1959 when they were students at UCL. Keith Tonge was a neuroradiologist at St Thomas’s Hospital – the hospital that tends to accept the most privileged people as medical students. St Thomas’s is located very close to Parliament. Top Doctors at Tommy’s tend to know a great deal of sensitive information about people who work in Westminster. A stranger who follows this blog told me that sexual relationships between the staff of St Thomas’s and our esteemed representatives and their minions in Westminster are common. Whether they ever attended parties at Elm Guest House together I do not know – but Jenny and Keith would.

The MPs of other constituencies within spitting distance of Richmond-Upon-Thames are worth considering as well. Just down the road was the constituency of Kingston-Upon-Thames. The MP for Kingston-Upon-Thames, 1979-95, was Norman Lamont. Norman Lamont’s highest profile job in Gov’t was as Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1990-93 in John Major’s Gov’t. Norman was famously on duty on Black Wednesday – his political advisor who had helped cause the crisis was a man called David Cameron (see post ‘Running The Country – And All That Jazz’). Lamont was a member of the Cambridge Mafia, a group of people who knew each other from their time as members of the Cambridge University Conservative Association, who all played key roles in Thatcher’s and Major’s administrations. Other members of the Mafia include Ken Clarke, Michael Howard, John Selwyn Gummer and Leon Brittan. These people served in Gov’t with, and knew that, Sir Peter Morrison, Thatcher’s aide and Tory MP for Chester, was molesting children. Norman Lamont was Minister for Trade and Industry, 1983-85 – he was succeeded by Sir Peter Morrison. Lamont’s father was a Top Doctor – a surgeon – who practiced in Shetland. A very influential Top Doctor had connections to Kingston-Upon-Thames – Professor Hugh Bentall. Hugh Bentall’s family own the upmarket department store in Kingston-Upon-Thames, Bentalls. Hugh Bentall was a cardiac surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital – other staff there grumbled about the enormous influence that he wielded within Hammersmith Hospital/Royal Postgraduate Medical School. When I was there in 1986/87 we were given lectures in anatomy by a woman who aroused the ire of nearly all other staff. It transpired that the root of the discord was the feeling that she had secured her job unfairly. She had been a secretary who became Bentall’s mistress. He arranged for her to do a degree in anatomy, then a PhD and then a lecturing job for her materialised…

Hugh Bentall’s son Richard knows all about Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends. Richard Bentall is a clinical psychologist who trained at Bangor and who worked at Bangor University’s School of Psychology for years. Richard Bentall knows how dreadful the mental health service is in north Wales and he knows how questionable much of the mental health research that has been conducted there is.

In 1991 it was discovered that a sex therapist called Lindi St Clair who also used the name Miss Whiplash was selling her services from a flat owned by Norman Lamont. He knew nuzzing. Norman Lamont was given a peerage in 1998. In the same year, when Spain indicated that they wanted to put Augusto Pinochet on trial for torturing and killing all those people in Chile when and after he seized power in a coup, killing Chile’s democratically elected leader along the way, Norman Lamont agreed with Thatcher that Pinochet was one of the good guys and described him as ‘a good and brave and honourable soldier’.

Surbiton is another constituency close to Richmond. The MP for Surbiton, 1983-97, was Conservative Richard Tracey. Tracey is a law graduate of Birmingham University. He was a leader writer for the Daily Express, 1964-66. Then between 1966-78 Tracey was a presenter and reporter for the BBC, working on TV and radio current affairs programmes. He then worked as public affairs consultant, 1978-83. Tracey is a JP and was a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, 2008-10. He is now the London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth. Remember where the social work team who served St George’s was based – and the job of one of the alleged visitors to Elm Guest House?

Richard Tracey was preceded as MP for Surbiton by Conservative Sir Nigel Fisher, who held the seat between 1955-83. Prior to that Fisher had been MP for Hitchin, 1950-55. Fisher had been PPS to Gwilym Lloyd George, one of the Lloyd George dynasty from Gwynedd, members of whose extended family challenged Edwina Hart’s attempts to confront the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales (see posts ‘A Vampire At Glyndwr University!’ and ’95 Glorious Years!’ ). Sir Nigel Fisher was the father of Mark Fisher, who so admired Levy and Babs’s Report into the Pindown Scandal.

I obtained much of my information about Babs for this post from her obituary that ‘The Guardian’ published in 2000. The obituary of this deeply compromised woman who was well-networked with paedophiles equated to a hagiography. It was written by a Terry Philpot. In much the same way that Tam Dalyell churned out kind words in the event of the most unscrupulous, sleazy politicians dying, Terry Philpot busied himself stressing how recently deceased people who managed social service departments shot through with serious abuse of children were selflessly dedicated to the welfare of those in their care. Babs was of course ‘always on the side of the children’.

Who is Terry? Terry is a PR man for social workers, including it would seem those who were also child abusers. Terry  has written for ‘The Guardian’, ‘The Independent’, ‘The Tablet’ and ‘New Society’. Terry was Editor of ‘Community Care’, the in-house magazine for social workers which is so far removed from reality that it can fairly be described as delusional. John Allen used to advertise for staff for the Bryn Alyn Community in ‘New Society’.

Terry Philpot also wrote the obituary of Brian Roycroft, which appeared in ‘The Guardian’ in 2002. Brian Roycroft was ‘one of the most charismatic and influential social services directors’ – Roycroft was Director of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne City Council Social Services, 1971-93. Before Roycroft was Director, he had been children’s officer, Director of Education and Chief Executive of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne City Council for short periods of time. He had worked for the City Council since 1967 and for the three years before that Roycroft had worked in Gateshead as a children’s officer. So Roycroft will have known – if not known personally, then certainly known about – Matt Arnold and Peter Howarth whilst they were working at Axwell Park School in Gateshead and Howarth was abusing children there.

The City of Newcastle sent children on placement to the Bryn Alyn Community and continued to do so even after Newcastle police were told of allegations that children from Newcastle had been abused at Bryn Alyn. When questioned about this after the shit hit the fan over the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, Roycroft stated that thousands of children had passed through the system and he really couldn’t remember a thing about matters Bryn Alyn. Which is odd because former residents of Bryn Alyn who were sent there by Newcastle City Council remembered Brian Roycroft turning up at Bryn Alyn to open an extension. They thought that Roycroft’s memory problems were farcical because whilst at Bryn Alyn he came face to face with the dreadful conditions – but continued to send kids there.

One boy from Newcastle who was sent to Bryn Alyn maintained that he was threatened at gun point by a staff member demanding sex. Now you won’t read about that in ‘Community Care’ – or indeed in the Waterhouse Report.

The man who sent kids from Newcastle into the arms of John Allen’s organised crime network in north Wales was a very big name in social work. He was President of the Association of Directors of Social Services and Thatcher appointed him as a European Social Commissioner.

Roycroft’s most famous client was Mary Bell, the 10 year old who killed two small boys in 1968 – Mary was from Newcastle. Gitta Sereney wrote an acclaimed book about Mary Bell, ‘Cries Unheard’. The book contains extracts of interviews that Mary gave as an adult about her time in care. Mary maintains that on one occasion she was taken on a day trip by her social worker and plied with alcohol. Sereney makes a point of saying that the social worker had emphasised that this had never -indeed could not have – happened. Sereney makes comments about how children’s memories play tricks on them. Whereas the memories of Directors of Social Services don’t function at all when they are asked why they’ve been handing kids over to a branch of an international paedophile ring.

In his obituary of Roycroft, Philpot observes that Roycroft was born into his job – literally. His mother and father were houseparents at the NCH home in Frodsham, Cheshire. Brian Roycroft trained as a social worker at Birmingham and Leeds Universities. In 1957 he became a child care officer in Hertfordshire, in 1961 he was appointed assistant area officer for London County Council’s children’s dept and then in 1964 he went to the north east to join the paedophiles up there. A lifetime of networking and continuous professional development!

Roycroft continued with his giving after retirement. He Chaired a local Housing Association that he founded and was also Chair of the Alzheimers Disease Society. It continued after his death – Roycroft left dosh in his will which was used to establish the Brian Roycroft Fund. Mike Worthington, Chair of the Fund, described Brian as ‘an inspirational leader’. Not ‘a friend and business associate of one of the country’s most dangerous paedophiles’.

Whilst Roycroft was Director of Newcastle Social Services, the Sunday Times magazine reported that other Directors of Social Services voted Roycroft ‘the Director’s Director’.

I have described many of the links between the paedophiles’ friends in north Wales and the north east in previous posts eg. ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection’. I previously mentioned abuse at an institution in Durham, the Aycliffe Centre (it seems to have undergone several name changes during its long and unhappy history). So whilst researching for this post I was fascinated to discover that Derek Brushett, a Children’s Inspector for the Welsh Office, had worked at a former approved school, Aycliffe Secure Remand Centre/Community Home. Brushett had been the Deputy Headmaster at the educational part of the establishment, 1967-74. Could a network facilitating these sorts of connections explain why Matt Arnold at Bryn Estyn earned more than his manager in Clwyd County Council and was known to have a hotline to the Inspection Dept at the Welsh Office and would only take his instructions from them?

So in the face of all this, Babs Kahan only ever had the interests of the children at heart. She somehow missed the presence of a pan-European paedophile ring – which was well on the way to developing into an international ring – under her nose. One which blossomed during the years that she occupied some of the most senior positions in children’s social work in the UK. Politicians and diplomats named in the House as child abusers by Geoffrey Dickens and crucial information re the abuse of children by politicians and others lost by Leon Brittan whilst he was Home Secretary (see post ‘A UK Network’), the conviction of Oliver Brooke Professor of Paediatrics at St George’s for the possession of child porn (much of it from Europe), the presence of a brothel catering to interesting sexual tastes just down the road from St George’s which included Top Doctors, judges, politicians, clergymen, lawyers and peers among its clients (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’) and scandals in children’s social work blowing up all over the UK repeatedly involving people popping abroad to work or go on holiday or indeed owning properties abroad. Oh – and nearly everyone who blabbed subsequently being found dead. Babs and her colleagues didn’t notice a thing.

International child sex trade facilitated by professional people including politicians, some of whom were paedophiles themselves? What absolute nonsense. As for those sick evil fantasists claiming to have been sexually abused by eminent people – well they should be prosecuted. Broadmoor’s the place for people like them. As Jimmy Savile knew…

All together now – ‘We didn’t know…’

There will be another post regarding events in the north east of England coming soon, looking specifically at the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal and those professionals involved.

MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course…

MRegular followers of this blog will know that I – and some of those commenting on my posts – have been bringing to public attention the appalling hypocrisy of MIND, an organisation claiming to be the ‘voice of the service user’ whilst concealing serious abuses in the mental health services and even entering into ‘partnerships’ with abusive services and individuals  (see posts such as ‘The Mysterious Silence Of MIND’, ‘Newly Discovered – Parabl’ and ‘The Commissioning Of Parabl – And Yet More History’).

I have explained that I first became aware of the corruption of MIND when I went down to see William Bingley, their Legal Director, in 1987 regarding the criminal activities of the north Wales mental health services. Bingley admitted that he knew all about the wrongdoing of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and indeed he knew a lot more than I did. I gave Bingley yet more evidence re Jones et al but not only did Bingley continue to keep quiet regarding Dafydd and co but when Bingley later became Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission, he and that organisation continued to collude with Dafydd and Dr Tony Francis (Dr X), although they knew about the continued illegal detention of people and abuse of the Mental Health Act in north Wales. I knew from my meeting with Bingley that he knew an awful lot about Dafydd – including the deaths in Dafydd’s ‘care homes’, the allegations that the wrongdoing in north Wales was linked to Freemasonry and the existence of Dafydd’s extensive ‘sex therapy’ practice and the possible purposes of that business. I have no idea whether Bingley knew that Dafydd et al were concealing the paedophile ring that was operating in north Wales at the time though – the paedophile ring that was concealed again at a higher level by Thatcher’s and Major’s Gov’ts. However before Bingley began working for MIND, he worked as a research assistant for Matthew Parris, A Tory MP who had previously worked as Thatcher’s correspondence secretary. A man whose autobiography told of his summer trips – in the company of friends – to a place in Italy that they named the ‘villa of shame’, where they would be visited by ‘boys’ whom Parris described as ‘always willing’. For more background on Parris and his connections, see post ‘A Pretty Classy Piece Of Operation’.

I had thought that I had previously dug up a substantial amount of shit and compromising info on MIND, but I’ve spent a bit of time doing more research on a few other key figures in that organisation and I’ve found much more worrying info – that organisation has been compromised for decades. Here are a few of the highlights that I have dug up.

The current Chief Exec is the disgusting Paul Farmer whom I have blogged about previously. Farmer’s reputation is plummeting fast as a result of his enthusiasm for MIND to land contracts from the Dept of Work and Pensions, contracts that are all about forcing ‘service users’ into employment that may well be unsuitable and for which they may well be too ill. Farmer’s enormous salary has also been made public by disability activists – he trousers in excess of £100k pa for his role as the Voice of the Service User – and I’m delighted to say that this unscrupulous git has been met with protests on his travels around the UK. I was expecting the BBC to wheel him out for him to give his comments regarding the latest round of bad news re the UK’s mental health services, but mercifully we were spared that for once. Had he done the rounds of the BBC studios perhaps somebody would have finally asked him why he and his lame organisation have kept so quiet about the crisis – which has been evident for many years. Of course Farmer also knew all about the criminal activities of the north Wales mental health services many years ago. When I wrote to Peter Hain in his capacity as Secretary of State for Wales in approx. 2005 giving him full details of what had happened to me t the hands of the mental health services, I cc’d the letter to the Chief Exec of Rethink (I didn’t cc it to MIND because I knew that they were ignoring what was happening in north Wales) – who at the time was one Paul Farmer. I never received a response, although a few months later Farmer then became Chief Exec of MIND!

But what of previous CEOs of MIND? Before Farmer, the CEO was Richard Brook, who was appointed in 2001. Brook was CEO when I e mailed MIND HQ about the assaults being carried out by Hergest Unit staff on patients – only to receive an e mail back written as though it was to a small child telling me that what I had to do was go to the yellow pages and look up ‘solicitors’ and go and talk to one of them…. At this time the ‘service user reps’ for the Hergest were heavily involved with MIND – those reps who wet themselves at the thought of confronting Hergest staff and managers concerning the gross abuses that were endemic. One of those ‘service user reps’ admitted to me that she knew that residents in Prestwood Homes were being abused – furthermore, Prestwood Homes were taking full advantage of free MIND facilities such as walking groups, drop in centres etc without paying MIND a penny, although Prestwood were charging thousands of quid a week for a ‘placement’. Somebody else involved with MIND knew about the abuse of residents at Prestwood as well – Geoff Lees, who is now Director of Vale of Clwyd MIND. I told him about it, whilst he was still working as a social work tutor at Coleg Menai in Bangor. I know that a number of other people told him what was going on at Prestwood as well. For details of the horrors at Prestwood and the unfortunate death of a young woman support worker there who witnessed even more that I did, see posts ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’ and ‘The Commissioning Of Parabl – And Yet More History’.

Richard Brook was able to publicise unacceptable practice if he felt like it though. In 2004 the ‘Daily Mail’ ran an article entitled ‘Why I Resigned Over This Disgraceful Happy Pill Cover-Up’. The article explained that Brook had resigned from the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Authority) after he discovered that they had known about the side effects of the anti-depressant Seroxat but had not publicised them. Brook claimed that he had been threatened with legal action by Prof Kent Woods, the CEO of the MHRA, if he revealed that the MHRA had been ‘sitting on’ it’s knowledge of Seroxat’s side effects. Brook stated that MIND had been ‘tracking Seroxat’ for a decade’. So MIND knew about Seroxat and it’s problems as well then – but then they’d known about the problems in north Wales since 1979 at least, when Mary Wynch was illegally arrested and imprisoned (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’) and had done or said nothing. In this article, Brook mentions the ‘Panorama’ programme about Seroxat that had been screened the year before – that will be the programme that featured Dr David Healy, who worked at the Hergest Unit! So MIND had got into bed (so to speak) with two psychiatrists from north Wales – Dafydd, who years before had been involved with MIND and David, as he Bravely Spoke Out. Brook told the Mail that following the ‘Panorama’ programme, MIND held a demo outside the offices of the MHRA. As opposed to outside of the Hergest Unit, where patients were being assaulted, framed for serious crimes, refused treatment no matter how ill they were and were committing suicide.

Brook maintains that he went to see the Health Minister Lord Warner to tell him of his concerns regarding SSRIs and Warner told him that he would speak to the MHRA. Warner then simply issued a guide to doctors detailing the max recommended dose of Seroxat (that must have been why Dr Richard Tranter, Healy’s friend, protégé and PhD student prescribed a friend of mine three times the maximum recommended dose of Seroxat then). It was at this point that the man of principle Brook resigned from the MHRA. Brook told the Mail that there was an urgent need for an inquiry into the MHRA and stated that many people involved with the MHRA also have connections to the pharmaceutical industry. Which is true – but then MIND’s hands are as dirty as those of any advisor to the pharmaceutical industry.

In Jan 2006 Brook featured in a BBC News online report and commented on the mental health of people living in rural areas. He stated that ‘the extent of mental health problems in the countryside is likely to be hidden’ – it was in north Wales, it was hidden by MIND, they knew that huge numbers of people were being given a diagnosis of ‘borderline personality disorder’ and refused care after being told that they were ‘untreatable’. At the time the area served by the Hergest Unit had the second highest rate of suicide for women in England and Wales.

After defending people with mental health problems so successively, upon leaving MIND Brook was appointed CEO of the newly created Office of the Public Guardian! Just the sort of person that was needed in such a position obviously. After a year guarding the public, Brook then became CEO of the deaf-blind charity SENSE.

MIND’s CEO before Brook was Judi Clements, who was in post between 1992-2001. So she oversaw those crazy years in which I was repeatedly arrested by the mental health services for ludicrous reasons, in which Dafydd resisted efforts to shut down the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and for his pains walked away with the contract to provide ‘substance abuse services’ for North Wales (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’) – the years which also saw the massive cover-up of the paedophile ring in north Wales which was the Waterhouse Report, in the wake of which a lot of people who’d been victims of that gang as children were found dead after becoming ‘users’ of the mental health services. Judi’s tenure also spanned the years in which Prestwood Homes were established and became big business within just a few months, what with the constant supply of vulnerable people from secure hospitals available for Prestwood to traffic them…

Something must have happened on Judi’s watch, because there is virtually no info from MIND available about Judi, it’s as though she never passed through their doors. However, there is some info about her in an article in HSJ from 2010. HSJ told us that after being Chief Exec of MIND for nine years, she was leaving due to health related problems, namely diabetes and arthritis. A David Peryer, the Chair of Trustees of MIND, stated that Judi would be ‘sorely missed’ – so that’s why they subsequently air-brushed her out of history. Preyrer mentioned that MIND was currently undergoing restructuring to concentrate on ‘supporting local offices’. These were of course the ‘local offices’ which included those in north Wales who were so helpfully providing free services to Prestwood Homes and who then began entering ‘partnerships’ with CAIS to provide yet more ‘services’ after being handed contracts by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board – many of whose former staff and their friends were now working with MIND.

Judi didn’t just leave MIND, she did a Richard Tranter and left the UK for New Zealand. Despite the diabetes and the arthritis, Judi seems to have bounced back and in 2005 when she relocated to New Zealand, she landed a job as Chief Exec of the Mental Health Foundation over there. She ‘moved on’ in 2015. In Feb 2015 Judi featured on the website of the New Zealand Law Society, promoting her forthcoming seminar on Mindfulness for the New Zealand Law Society Auckland Branch. On this website Judi was described as an ‘experienced Chief Exec in the NGO sector’ with a ‘background in law, social policy, housing, local government and management practice’. It was explained that ‘after a successful career in local government service management, policy and practice development, Judi moved to the NGO sector’. So which failing local authority did Judi work for prior to keeping the lid on the barrel of shit in MIND then? Judi has an LLB – so she will recognise serious crime when she sees it. Or indeed conceals it – or even facilitates it.

Judi has sat on ‘several Gov’t advisory groups covering mental health, social policy and NGO development’.

Between 1989 and 1992, Ros Hepplewhite was Chief Exec of MIND. Whose reign also spanned the Dafydd years, but then the Dafydd years have gone on for the last five decades so everyone’s implicated where Dafydd is concerned. So perhaps it’s more helpful to mention that Ros’s reign spanned the period of time during which St George’s Hospital Medical School and Springfield Hospital colluded with Dafydd – although they knew what he was up – to in his attempts to have me labelled dangerous and banged up. The early 1990s of course also saw allegations that a paedophile ring was active in north Wales involving political figures appear in the London based media. Dafydd and his mistress Lucille Hughes were concealing and facilitating this paedophile ring – it was Dafydd and Lucille to whom St George’s Hospital and Springfield turned for ‘evidence’ of my dangerousness. It was in 1992 that five people with connections to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal were killed in an arson attack on a flat in Brighton (see post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs). So Ros was pretty close to some serious action.

However I can’t find any references to Ros’s activities at MIND. Although Ros did hit the headlines after she left MIND. In 1993 Ros was appointed CEO of the Child Support Agency – which was a Gov’t disaster as big as the NHS IT system that had to be shelved after a few billion had been spent on it. Although unlike the CSA, the failed NHS IT system was not thought to have contributed to anyone’s suicide…Ros was famously removed from her post and the CSA metamorphosed into something else because Gov’t could not withstand the embarrassment any longer.

I have found a reference to Ros on the blog of the Labour MEP for London, Mary Honeyball. Mary’s post dated Jan 11 2010 discusses examples of what she believed was outrageous sexism. Honeyball believes that Ros was removed from her post as a result of such sexism – nothing to do with the suicides of distraught parents then, or the numerous parents who were never able to collect their maintenance payments, or the absent parents who used every trick in the book not to pay up leaving their former partners destitute whilst the CSA refused to listen to their pleas for help… Tragedies as a result of the chaos that was the CSA involved both men and women – and of course the children. Honeyball entertainingly stated that Dame Barbara Mills the DPP was also the victim of sexism. Babs has featured on this blog previously – she was the DPP whilst the CPS found excuse after excuse not to mount prosecutions against numerous paedophiles despite stacks of evidence being presented (see post ‘A Future Leader Of The Labour Party’). Mary Honeyball also extended her ‘sympathies’ to the former Home Secretary Jaqui Smith, who was ‘hounded’ for being a ‘high profile woman’. No, Jaqui Smith became a source of national entertainment when it was revealed that her husband had rented porn films, the cost of which Jaqui had then reclaimed on her Parliamentary expenses. In a desperate attempt to salvage herself in the eyes of a nation rolling around laughing, Jaqui then tried to construct herself as a latter day Mary Whitehouse and began speaking out about Porn and Sex, which culminated in her presenting a documentary about prostitution. Unfortunately she did this whilst wearing one of those brightly coloured plastic macs when she was filmed under street lamps, which caused one of the better Radio 4 comedians – it might have been Sue Perkins – to comment that Jaqui looked like something out of ‘Band of Gold’.

Mary Honeyball ends her post by explaining that she speaks as someone ‘who ran’ the Association of Chief Officers of Probation in the mid-90s – she mentions that she didn’t have a background in probation, but that she was appointed on the basis of her other talents. So that’s why at that time some of those accused of molesting children in north Wales or failing to act when their colleagues were molesting children found it possible to move into careers with the Probation Service.

Ros Hepplewhite was CEO of MIND whilst the most dreadful scandals involving the abuse and even murder of patients occurred at Ashworth and Broadmoor. Don’t remember the Voice of the Service Users saying much about all that at the time.

At the time of my initial encounters with Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends in the mid-80s, the CEO of MIND was Christopher Heginbotham – he’d been appointed CEO in 1982. He was in post at the time that I had my meeting with William Bingley. I suspect that Chris and Bingley might have been chums – Heginbotham was appointed CEO in 1982. Bingley was working as lobbyist for MIND at that time and landed his plum full time post there in 1983. Bingley’s mother Lady Juliet Bingley was also a bigwig in MIND and was Chair 1978-84. Furthermore Heginbotham departed from MIND in 1989 – Bingley ‘moved on’ into the post as Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission in 1990. Bingley eventually wound up in the Chair of Mental Health Law and Ethics at the University of Central Lancashire and then in a role at the University of Cumbria after resigning from his post as Chair of an NHS Trust when a few awkward questions were asked about his business interests. Heginbotham also eventually secured a position at the University of Cumbria. References to William Bingley seemed to have disappeared from the MIND website recently, but I know that MIND named a building after him in Lancashire, ‘William Bingley House’. I wonder if it’ll be a bit like the fall out after Jimmy Savile’s death and MIND will end up renaming the building in a desperate attempt to pretend that they’d never met Bingley? But guess what? Heginbotham ended up in Lancashire too – where I presume that he still is.

Bingley and Heginbotham were at MIND when Savile was appointed General Manager of Broadmoor. I do not remember them questioning the appointment. What’s the betting that there’s some photos somewhere of dear old Jim with folk from MIND that are now well hidden? Should anyone know of any, please do let me know…

Heginbotham is a Director of something called ‘Values Based Commissioning Ltd’ in Lancashire, which began life in 2011. The other Director is a Christine Heginbotham. It is described as ‘health and social care consultancy’. Christopher Heginbotham has also published a book on Values Based Commissioning of Health and Social Care. So what is this all about?

According to an article in HSJ from June 2013, ‘Values Based Commissioning’ (VbC) ‘aims to put users’ views at the heart of reshaping services’. The discussion concerns the commissioning of mental health services by CCGs (Clinical Commissioning Groups) and it is explained that ‘expertise’ in this area is ‘varied’. However, as readers may have guessed, a few aficionados are on hand to help! HSJ quotes words of wisdom from Rethink’s Associate Director of Policy, Research and Campaigning, Victoria Bleazard, as well as Sophie Corlett, Director of External Relations at MIND. A Joint Commissioning Panel on Mental Health (JCPMH) was established in 2011, which is co-chaired by the Royal Colleges of Psychiatrists and General Practitioners – this Panel produced ‘guidance’. VbC is ‘a new type of commissioning’ (which must be why it involves the same old people and institutions as the previous commissioning did), ‘prioritising service users’ values and experiences’ (the Royal Colleges mentioned, Rethink and MIND have such good track records in that area don’t they).

HSJ identifies a Dr Neil Deuchar as the architect and champion of VbC – he’s a psychiatrist from Birmingham, a specialist advisor on commissioning and JCPMH Co-Chair. The other Co-Chair is Liz England, a GP who is Mental Health Lead for a Locality Care Group within a CCG and National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. Deuchar is quoted as saying that ‘patient power is the key’ and that ‘co-production between patient and carer groups, clinicians and commissioners is vital’. There then follows a bit of asinine text headed by the words ‘what do service users think?’

So Christopher Heginbotham saw an opportunity then – an insane system was devised by a Gov’t that had relied on the likes of Heginbotham and his mates at MIND for advice, this insane system was then explained to the world by HSJ and promoted by MIND and their friends, by which time Heginbotham had written his book and set up his company – presumably with Mrs Heginbotham – to serve the insane system. The insane system was entirely dependent at every stage on the involvement of the very same people and institutions that were colluding with the likes of Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends.

Is it surprising that five years down the line we have Sir James Munby, the President of the Family Courts, hitting the roof because there is virtually no provision in the whole of the UK for a suicidal 17 year old girl who is due to be released from ‘secure custody’? Although no-one has explained why a girl in her state is IN secure custody, allegedly alone in a seclusion room from which everything has been removed except a mattress on the floor. That’s going to do her a power of good isn’t it. Furthermore I guarantee that I know how that barbaric regime will be described on that girl’s records – there will be a reference to her being ‘nursed’. I have heard mental health nurses taking about ‘nursing’ people in ‘seclusion’ or ‘nursing’ them ‘on a mattress on the floor’. The whole system is completely nuts and the people working within it have been sent nuts by it if they weren’t already nuts when they took up their employment.

If readers have been impressed by the calibre of MIND CEOs described so far, hold on to your hats whilst I tell you about Heginbotham’s predecessor, Tony Smythe, CEO from 1974-82.  Smythe’s incumbency pre-dated the internet, but Smythe was quite something and info about him is still available online. Smythe’s full name was Clifford Anthony Smythe. He categorised himself as a radical anarcho-pacifist until the day that he died in 2004 and was involved with a number of political causes. He was appointed General Secretary of the NCCL in 1966, a post that he held until 1971. It was in the 70s that it became clear that the NCCL had been infiltrated by paedophiles who had conflated their cause with gay liberation – paedophiles also infiltrated the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) at this time and a number of those guilty of abusing children in north Wales were active in CHE. Smythe was at one point Vice-President of CHE. In 1971 Smythe became involved with MIND. His obituary describes him as establishing an ‘executive committee’ which led to ‘service users becoming involved in management and policy decisions’ and that this ‘chimed with Tony’s anarchist belief’.

Now this talk of the active involvement of ‘service users’ also surrounds Bingley and his mother. Which ‘service users’ do people think that the Bingleys and Smythe liberated? Psychiatry was dreadful in the 70s and early 80s – it was particularly gross in north Wales but it was pretty grim everywhere else as well. There is no way that ‘service users’ had any voice anywhere in the 70s – who are MIND actually talking about? Radical ideas were bandied around by people like Laing et al but these ideas didn’t touch mainstream psychiatric practice – it is dishonest to pretend that they did.  I am wondering if all this guff about the active involvement of ‘service users’ in MIND is simply a glorified reference to one or two influential people in the organisation who may have had mental health problems themselves at some point. Of course Dr Dafydd Alun Jones told everyone that he suffered from a ‘nervous illness’ himself – it was a good excuse when he was challenged about his appalling conduct.

CHE was usually led by people who were gay themselves, so I was interested to read that Smythe had a ‘lifelong partner’ Jeanne and five daughters. Jeanne died in 2001.

Smythe and Jeanne were involved with Haringey MIND long after Smythe had stepped down from his post as CEO. Tony Smythe was listed as a Director of Haringey MIND between 1998-2000 and Jeanne between 1990-92 and between 1996-97.

I have mentioned previously that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones had a contact in Haringey Social Services – when I finally got out of the North Wales Hospital in Jan 1987, he told me that he had rung Haringey Social Services to ‘let them know’ that I would be living on their patch. This was not any sort of referral for aftercare – this was just the way that Dafydd conducted himself. I have also mentioned that I now have copies of letters between Alun Davies, the manager of the mental health services in Gwynedd and Laurie Wood, the manager of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, in which they discuss their ‘friend’ at St George’s trying to find out which dept I was working in when I started working there in 1989 – there is also a reference to their friend accessing mail that was sent to me at St George’s in an attempt to discover my home address. There is no clue as to the identity of this friend in my documents, but whilst I was working at St George’s I was visited by a junior doctor called Jimmy Schroff who had come to find me because he’d heard that there was a girl from Bangor working there – Jimmy Schroff seemed to know everyone whom I had made a complaint about in north Wales and furthermore he had done his GP training in the practice of Dr D.G.E. Wood (see post ‘St George’s Hospital Medical School, 1989/1990’). Jimmy Schroff died some years ago – his widow works at the Betsi.

Tony Smythe was also a Director of an organisation on the Embankment called Reach Volunteering in 1990/91. In 1992 and again between 1995-2001 Jeanne was a Director of ‘an inclusive community hub’ called the Markfield Project.

Tony Smythe kept interesting company. He was acquainted with an actress called Adrienne Corri who died in 2016. Corri had a cult following and was noted for being rather excessive, sometimes swearing aggressively at her own audiences. She was friends with Ronnie and Reggie Kray. In the days before they were both banged up when it dawned upon everyone that despite hanging out with Barbara Windsor and Adrianne Corri they were a pair of vicious thugs. Who had also murdered people. Ronnie of course ended up in Broadmoor and there was a lot of huffing and puffing from some Tory MPs when it was revealed in the press that he had superstar status in Broadmoor, was politely called Mr Kray by the prison officers (who according to the likes of Professor Robert Bluglass were ‘nurses’) who generally pandered to him. What the Tories expected from an institution which Edwina Currie had appointed Jimmy Savile to run I do not know. Perhaps they should have taken a bit of notice of the other patients who complained that they were being beaten up and sexually abused by the ‘nurses’. As well as by Savile.

In 1968 whilst Tony Smythe was still leading the NCCL, they sponsored a production of Samuel Beckett’s play ‘Come and Go’ which starred Adrienne Corri. It was advertised as ‘gala entertainment concerning depravity and corruption’. The evening included other entertainment as well and was compered by George Melly. The George Melly who was famously promiscuous but whose wife was very tolerant of his desire for an open marriage. Much has been written about Melly’s bisexuality and his penchant for numerous extra-marital relationships, but his wife was I suspect much more tolerant than most people realised. Many years ago, George Melly came to do a gig at Theatre Gwynedd in Bangor. I know a man who was at the time of Melly’s performance in Bangor 16 yrs old. Melly paid to have sex with him. This was whilst the age of consent for gays was still 21. I have never seen Melly’s name included among the Rolfs or the Saviles or the Gary Glitters, which is extraordinary, particularly as some years before he died Melly gave an interview to a newspaper mentioning how much he enjoyed caressing the thighs of pre-pubescent boys. Yet no-one commented on this at all. Melly retired to Wales of course – to the Brecon Beacons.

Tony Smythe’s years as CEO of MIND covered the period of time which saw Mary Wynch unlawfully arrested and illegally detained in Denbigh for a year by Dafydd. Whilst she was in Denbigh Mary told me that she witnessed the patients in Dafydd’s ‘young people’s ward’ having sex with each other – after being encouraged to do so by Dafydd – whilst the nurses watched the show. Mary approached MIND for advice regarding her unlawful imprisonment. William Bingley admitted to me that MIND received grant funding from Gwynedd Health Authority and that Dafydd wrote to MIND telling them that he would block their dosh from Gwynedd if they advised Mary. Bingley told me that they didn’t succumb to Dafydd’s threats. However I now know that Bingley wasn’t in the least bit truthful regarding his stories of fighting for patients rights. What’s the betting that they slung Mary overboard lest they lost their dosh from Gwynedd Health Authority? Bingley also admitted to me that Dafydd had been a ‘leading light’ in MIND himself in the 1960s.

The General Secretary of MIND immediately prior to Smythe was Mary Appleby. She was CEO from 1951-74. Whilst Dafydd was a leading light in MIND! At the same time that Gwynne was lobotomising people and the paedophile ring was growing and growing, assisted by John Allen’s collection of children’s homes, the Bryn Alyn Community, which was doing a roaring trade in accepting children from across the UK but particularly from the London boroughs and the West Midlands…

Appleby died in 2013 and her obituary in the ‘Guardian’ mentioned that she became involved in MIND because there were mental health issues in her family. The ‘Guardian’ tells us that it was as a result of Mary’s efforts that MIND (then still called the National Association for Mental Health) became hugely influential, employing 200 people and was consulted by the Gov’t, the judiciary, the NHS and social workers’ organisations. In the early 70s a group of Scientologists tried to join MIND. Scientologists, although they are a rather eccentric group of people themselves, famously loathe psychiatry. They attempted to join MIND after alleging that psychiatrists were illegally imprisoning people, torturing people and were ‘carrying out perversions’. Mary fought the Scientologists in the High Court to keep them out of MIND. However, she allowed Dafydd to remain in.

Mary Appleby worked in both the War Office and the Foreign Office. She Chaired the Bench of Magistrates in an inner London juvenile Court for many years. She contributed to Gov’t Inquiries on mental health and social services. She sat on the appeals panel for the BBC and ITV and was a Member of the Immigration Appeals Tribunals. She also sat on the Selection Committee for the Civil Service. A pretty well-connected and influential lady then – even at Whitehall level.

Tony Smythe took over from Mary Appleby in 1974, but Appleby remained a Vice-President of MIND until her death in 2013. She will have not only had substantial influence regarding the appointment of Smythe, but she wielded considerable influence over that organisation for decades. She will have known exactly what sort of people were being appointed, what they were getting up to and indeed what they were concealing, ignoring or colluding with.

So what about those who have Chaired MIND? Let’s take a look at some of them….

Between 1969-78 Christopher Mayhew MP was Chair. Mayhew spent many years as a Labour MP but in 1974 he defected to the Liberals. In 1974 the Liberal MP Cyril Smith was busy abusing boys (and had been for some years) but it is now admitted that there was assistance from the security services in ensuring that he was never prosecuted (see post ‘Dr Death’). Mayhew is perhaps most famous however for taking part in a mescaline experiment in 1955 with Dr Humphrey Osmond. The plan was to film Mayhew on a mescaline trip for ‘Panorama’ but the programme was never broadcast. Humphrey Osmond was a psychiatrist who was well-known for his research into hallucinogens and schizophrenia – he was the man who administered mescaline to Aldous Huxley in the 50s which resulted in Aldous Huxley writing ‘The Doors of Perception’. Osmond also experimented with peyote when he went to stay with Native Americans.

So Mayhew was a man up for experimentation. He was given a peerage in 1981.

Between 1978 and 1984, William Bingley’s mother Lady Juliet Bingley was Chair. Juliet Bingley grew up in Harley Street – her father was a surgeon at Barts. She studied social administration at the LSE, during which time she undertook a placement in Liverpool at the Personal Services Society. In 1945 she qualified as a medical almoner (what we would now call a social worker). Her first job was at Barts. Juliet Bingley was married to Admiral Sir Alec Bingley who in 1959 was appointed NATO commander-in-chief of the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean fleet in Malta. The family only spent three years in Malta but Juliet got to work out there. She became involved in the development of health services for elderly people – but she was also good mates with the former Prime Minister of Malta, Dom Mintoff. Mintoff had just resigned as PM, which meant that Malta was under direct rule from London – Juliet became the ‘messenger’ between Mintoff and the London Gov’t and continued to play this role throughout the 70s and 80s during the various crises in Anglo-Maltese relations. Alec Bingley died in 1972 which was when Juliet became involved with MIND. She was initially Chair of the Local Associations Committee before becoming Chair of the whole organisation. In 1973 she also took up a post as medical social worker at St Marks, a hospital for gastro-intestinal disorders in London and was Chair of the Heads of Departments Committee there.

Juliet Bingley was busy with other charity work as well as MIND. In 1979 she founded the National Association for Colitis and Chrohns and she was also a founding Trustee of the Carr-Gomm Society, a charity now working for the homeless.

Well with a mum and dad with backgrounds and connections like that William Bingley was certainly not going to do anything to put Dafydd out of action whilst he and Lucille facilitated a paedophile ring supplying boys to Westminster figures and others in London who were enjoying the protection of the security services at the time. Come to think of it I don’t think that Juliet would have been particularly inclined to put a stop to Dafydd’s activities either – and she was incredibly well-connected among the very Top of the Top Doctors as well as the highest echelons of Gov’t should she need to protect him…

How did the Bingley clan ever manage to convince anyone that they were the Voice of the Service Users?

The person who succeeded Juliet as Chair of MIND was Lord David Ennals – he was Chair between 1984-89. Ennals was a Labour politician. In 1967 he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Home Office under Jim Callaghan. The Home Office that was at that time directly managing Bryn Estyn, where a brutal regime overseeing the violent sexual abuse of teenaged boys was becoming established. Ennals became Minister of State for Social Services in 1969. He lost his seat in 1970 and it was then that he became the ‘Mind campaign’ Director for the National Association of Mental Health. This campaign was established to fundraise but also to clarify the policies and aims of the organisation – as a result of the campaign in 1972 the charity changed it’s name to MIND. It was whilst Ennals was Chair that Tony Smythe was appointed Chief Exec – supposedly on the basis of his ‘human rights’ experience. Ennals remained campaign director until 1973 and was re-elected to Parliament in 1974. He lost his seat again in 1983 and was elevated to the Lords – then he popped back to MIND again to become Chair.

Ennals has a few close relatives who are worth mentioning. His younger brother Martin was a human rights activist and Secretary-General of Amnesty International. His son Paul has fingers in numerous pies.

Sir Paul Ennals was Chief Exec of the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) between 1998-2011. That’s the NCB to whom Peter Righton, a social care expert and academic who was a founder member of PIE and a convicted paedophile, acted as a ‘consultant’ (see post ‘The Waterhouse Tribunal – Who Was Involved And What Happened To Them Subsequently?’). Despite such worrying connections, the NCB, being an umbrella organisation, has links with many other organisations, including Barnardos – some of those involved with child abuse in north Wales had worked for Barnardos. The NCB also collaborates with the NSPCC – which works with Esther Rantzen’s Childline (see post ‘Ian Brockington’s Mischief’ for the questionable background of Valerie Howarth, the first Chief Exec of Childline) – and works in partnership with the Department of Health.

Paul Ennals is Chair of Haringey Local Safeguarding Children Board; South Tyneside Local Safeguarding Children Board; Gateshead Local Safeguarding Children Board; Sunderland Local Safeguarding Children Board. I do not know why Ennals has interests in both Haringey and the north east of England but I presume that he does a lot of commuting. If anyone living in the north east hopes to escape Paul Ennals’s safeguarding when they hit 18, they’ll be disappointed – he also Chairs the Safeguarding Adults Board of Gateshead and South Tyneside.

Before Ennals was involved with the NCB he was Director of Employment at the RNIB. He has Chaired or played a leading role on numerous Gov’t taskforces, working groups etc concerned with SEN, disabled or very young children.

Between 1994-2001 David Peryer was Chair of MIND. Peryer had previously been Director of Humberside Social Services. On 23 April 1998 Peryer gave evidence to the Select Committee on Health, along with Liz Sayce (Policy Director of MIND), Peter Wilson and Dinah Morley. Wilson had been Director of Young Minds for six years, was a child psychotherapist and had ‘many’ many years ago’ been a social worker. He had also worked in child and adolescent mental health at another institution familiar to readers of this blog, the Maudsley. In addition Wilson stated that he had worked in ‘child guidance’ in London. Dinah Morley was the ‘professional services manager’ for Young Minds. She had previously been the Assistant Director of an unidentified London borough, responsible for mental health and children’s services. Before that she ran a multi-disciplinary mental health team. She is also a member of a Health Authority.

So these witnesses all had vast experience of working in organisations and fields that had screwed up badly. Indeed Peryer told the Committee that he began working the field of child protection in 1977 in East Sussex, ‘shortly after the Maria Colwell case’. Maria Colwell was the first high profile death of a child in recent decades that was attributed to the fuckwittery of the welfare services.

The Committee were happy to rely on the advice of this bunch nonetheless. Liz Sayce in particular had a lot to say to the Committee. She was keen to tell the Committee of the sort of problems that ‘service users bring to us’ – did they include abusive psychiatrists, mental health staff perjuring themselves in order to secure convictions against them or their illegal detention in secure units? No, the service users complained of being bored in day hospitals. So Liz recommended that day hospitals should be shut and service users encouraged to attend college. I remember the results of Sayce’s recommendations well. The day hospitals were indeed closed down – nothing replaced them, so service users had nowhere to go at all and lost touch with their friends whom they used to meet in the day hospitals. So service users ended up being bored at home, alone. In the two years following the closure of the day hospital at the Hergest Unit, service users could be seen hanging about in the local towns destitute. A number of them died. As for ‘going to college’ – well a very small number of ‘service users’ benefited greatly from this and it turned their lives around. However Sayce’s ‘encouragement’ of such activity was interpreted by mental health teams as ‘coercion’ and certainly in north Wales numerous ‘service users’ were frog marched into college courses – they were told that they would lose social services support if they didn’t ‘take responsibility for getting better’ and enrol. Many of them did not have the academic ability needed for the courses that they had been coerced into joining and even more of them were far too fragile emotionally to cope with a college course. I knew of one course in which at the beginning of term about 15 service users enrolled at the behest of their mental health teams – every one of them withdrew before the course was half-way through and two of them were so distressed that instead of handing in essays to their tutor they handed in suicide notes and accounts of how they had been sexually abused by members of their chapel when they were children. The college ‘counselling service’ was in no way equipped to deal with the difficulties that these students were encountering. Not that the mental health team cared – once the ‘service user’ had enrolled, the mental health team ticked a box marked ‘recovered’ and forgot about them. A lot of ‘service users’ paid a very high price as a result of Liz Sayce’s advice.

No-one noticed – Sayce fucked up peoples lives all over again a few years later once she had been appointed Chief Exec of the Disability Rights Commission and a leading light on the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. It was Sayce that advised the Gov’t – what with her unique insight and being the Voice of the Service User – to close the Remploy factories on the grounds that they were ghettoes. Hundreds of Remploy staff volubly protested that they loved working at Remploy, that their disabilities were such that they couldn’t hold down other jobs – Remploy staff came forward with the most harrowing accounts of their mistreatment in previous workplaces and begged for Remploy to be reprieved. But Nurse Liz knew best and in 2012 told anyone who would listen in no uncertain terms that Service Users must be Included, that Remploy was Old Fashioned and that the Gov’t proposed Access To Work Fund was far more Empowering (it was also much cheaper and merely involved chucking a few hundred quid at a few service users to pay for simple adaptions on things like cars). The Gov’t followed Sayce’s advice and shut the Remploy factories down. Many of the former Remploy staff never worked again and are now on benefits. Furthermore I think that Theresa May et al are now proposing to whittle away at the Access To Work Fund anyway.

The Gov’t is still grappling with the advice that Liz gave them in 1998 – she recommended that health care and social care should NOT be merged. That’s why there is still such extreme inequity in the treatment of those people classed as needing ‘social care’ as compared to those whose needs are categorised as ‘medical’. But somebody was stupid enough to allow Liz to ‘lead’ on creating the Disability Agenda forming the basis of policy for the next two decades….

In Jan 2017 Liz announced her retirement from the Disability Rights Commission – she’d been shortlisted for a post as a Disability Commissioner on the European Human Rights Commission! For fuckwittery, arrogance and sheer irresponsibility, Liz is only matched by Rachel Perkins.

In 2001 David Henry took over as Chair. I can find no info about David Henry at all other than that whilst he was Chair of MIND he was given two free tickets worth £1,500 for the opening ceremony to some grand event in his capacity as ‘leader’ of a UK charity.

The present Chair, Ryan Campbell, has been in post since 2012. He was formerly the CEO of a ‘drug, alcohol and mental health charity in the south east of England’ and is currently the CEO of Demelza Hospice Care in Hindhead, Surrey. Ryan was previously involved with Age Concern and has been an expert advisor to Gov’t on the development of health services; is the author of DoH guidance to commissioning in the Third Sector; has been an advisor and taskforce member to DoH guidance on High Impact Changes in Health and Social Care (2008); and was the UK rep to the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

Ryan is also a member of something called the ‘Association of Chairs’, which seems to be no more than a collection of freeloading dipsticks who become Chairs of outfits like MIND. Ryan explains on their website that he joined the Association ‘because I need a network’. Of course you do Ryan. To propel you onwards and upwards in the face of your dismal performance in order that one day you too can bag a seat in the Lords or a place on the EHRC alongside Rachel bloody Perkins.

It is because of people like this lot that so many other people are dying and suffering in the UK’s health and welfare system.

NB. BBC News Wales and the ‘Daily Post’ online are reporting that there is pressure on Wales to provide ‘fix rooms’ in which drug users can inject heroin. North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones – he who as a young PC chauffeured Gordon Anglesea to the venues at which Anglesea molested boys and who many years later as Police and Crime Commissioner ‘made a mistake’ which resulted in Anglesea’s widow receiving 50% of his police pension although Anglesea died in prison as a convicted child abuser – is fully in support of the idea. Well it’s another great business opportunity for Dafydd and Lucille at CAIS – they can provide shooting galleries in which the CAIS clients can inject the goodies which they have been sold by their ‘peer guides’ and draw down a grant from the Welsh Gov’t to fund it all! I used to know someone who always quipped that CAIS stood for ‘Come And Inject Some’.

Anyone for co-production?
