The Old Devils

Every time that I think that I must have exhausted my blogging potential in terms of uncovering people who played key roles in concealing the wrongdoing of Dafydd and the paedophiles, I discover a few more.

One man who knew Dafydd et al well was Dr Jim Higgins. Higgins was a forensic psychiatrist who graduated from Glasgow University in 1967 and also passed through Birmingham University, presumably for postgraduate training. So Higgins will have known Dafydd’s mate and protector, Professor Robert Bluglass. Higgins worked as a consultant forensic psychiatrist in Mersey Regional Forensic Psychiatry Service from 1975 until he retired from clinical practice in 1999. So Higgins was in post throughout the years in which victims of Dafydd and the paedophiles were banged up in Moss Side, Park Lane and Ashworth Hospitals. Higgins will have known all about the sexual assaults and beatings at Ashworth, as well as the children who were taken into the hospital to be sexually abused and the murders of patients. He will have known that whilst the Top Doctors fitted up innocent people and locked them up indefinitely, the Angels – who were members of the POA – were involved in National Front activity and were at war with the Top Docs and clinical psychologists and that car tyres were being slashed and death threats sent. See my post ‘Security, Security’ for details of the joys of Moss Side, Park Lane and Ashworth.

Not that Higgins was finished in 1999 when he retired. He continued to work as a forensic psychiatry adviser to Secure Psychiatric Services Commissioning. Jim Higgins had a ‘longstanding interest in postgraduate medical education’. He was regional speciality adviser for many years, Chairman of STEC (Psychiatry) and joint founder of the regional rotational training scheme for junior doctors in psychiatry. Higgins held numerous posts in the Royal College of Psychiatrists, including that of sub-dean. In the late 1980s Higgins became Associate Postgraduate Dean with particular responsibility for SHOs in all specialities. He was responsible for the assessment and appraisal of SHOs and their posts.

Who better to lead the training of junior doctors than someone who kept quiet about patients being beaten to death by Angels?

Jim Higgins was also involved in the Deanery processes to assist ‘Doctors in Difficulty’ – doctors such as Dafydd perhaps, who had been caught with their trousers down (or indeed with their trousers off) and who suddenly found that they were suffering from a medical condition that explained every bit of their misconduct.

Jim Higgins contributed a chapter to the 1984 volume ‘Mentally Abnormal Offenders’, edited by Michael Craft and Ann Craft. The book had forewords by Robyn David and Dafydd’s old mate and umbrella Professor Kenneth Rawnsley from Cardiff University (see post ‘The Discovery Of A Whole New Galaxy…’).

Dr Michael Craft was a Top Doctor who specialised in the psychiatry of the mentally handicapped – the most vulnerable patient group that there is. Craft died in 2004. An obituary written by Dr Julian Boulnois described Craft as ‘an eccentric capable of both whimsy and of injecting a certain amount of naughtiness into debate, particularly if the going was getting tough’. Craft initially trained at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, then trained in neurology at Edinburgh and according to Boulnois ‘his colleagues would have considered him absolutely crazy, potty, nuts for wasting his qualifications, for psychiatry at that time was considered a place in medicine where graduates who could not hack it in main stream medicine would be able to work out their time in some back water or other’.

Which is why vile nutters like Dafydd and Gwynne were allowed to spend decades illegally imprisoning anyone who had crossed their path in a dungeon, lobotomising them and lying on oath if necessary. Being the dregs of the medical profession, it obviously made sense to give Dafydd and Gwynne complete power over distressed people and never to investigate serious complaints about them.

Craft did of course ‘train’ at the Maudsley, just like Dafydd, Dr Tony Francis (Dr X) and most of those who concealed their crimes. Although Boulnois was clearly under no illusions about the calibre of people entering psychiatry, he nonetheless described the Maudsley an ‘another centre of excellence in the world of medicine’. For details of the excellence of some of those to be found at the Maudsley who did Dafydd et al so many favours, see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’.

Craft chose to ‘care for the mentally handicapped with interests beyond into the area of juvenile delinquency and psychopathy’. So none of his patients were going to be listened to if they raised concerns about the eccentric, whimsical, naughty Dr Craft.

Boulnois reassures readers that there would be no Harley Street practice for Michael Craft – that will have been because the mentally handicapped and juvenile delinquents would not have had the money to buy the services of Michael Craft and would probably never have chosen to see him anyway, so he worked for the NHS and sectioned them. Craft’s obituary intriguingly mentions that he ‘was no stranger to controversy, particularly during his time in Wales’.

We are not told by Craft’s obituarist exactly what it was that Dr Craft did in Wales that was so controversial or indeed in which part of Wales that he did it. Craft went to Queensland in 1983 but we are not told why – Craft’s obituary suggests that he was living in Australia when he died.

Michael Craft’s co-editor of ‘Mentally Abnormal Offenders’ was his wife Ann. Ann Craft died in 1997 and the Indie published an obituary for her written by Ann’s colleague Hilary Brown.

Ann Craft was born Ann Burkimsher in Aldershot, Hampshire, where she was educated, although she was in Egypt for a short while ‘which gave her a taste for travel and a certain air of indomitability’. Ann worked abroad for the World Council of Churches for a time in her 20s but later studied at Swansea University. She qualified as a social worker in the early 1970s. Ann Craft then worked at Bryn-y-Neuadd Hospital, Llanfairfechan, Gwynedd, ‘where she began to articulate the needs of residents for sex education and support in their relationships’.

Bryn-y-Neuadd was a version of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for the learning disabled and it was grim. It was still grim in the 1990s as it was wound down before closure but it was seriously grim in the 1970s. It was run by the same bunch of gangsters and paedophiles’ friends that the rest of the NHS in north Wales was. One of those responsible for Bryn-y-Neuadd was Cledwyn Williams, who sits on the Board of Dafydd’s charity CAIS. Other senior managers for the mental handicap service – as it was called then – were named in the Waterhouse Report. There was absolutely no way that the residents of Bryn-y-Neuadd were having their ‘needs’ in terms of ‘sex education and support in their relationships’ articulated by anyone. I knew people with learning disabled adult children who were doing everything that they could to keep them out of the clutches of Bryn-y-Neuadd.

Ann Craft ‘believed passionately that service users deserved to be given the information they needed to make sense of their own lives and personal options.’

If Ann wasn’t dead she might have been able to explain why, when I applied for a job as an advocate for the residents of Bryn-y-Neuadd in 1991, I was told by one of the senior managers that many of the patients were ‘cabbages’ and ‘vegetables’. At my interview. The people running that place were so bad that they did not know how bad they were.

Now what sort of ‘sex education’ do readers think that the cabbages might have been receiving from those who were running a sex trafficking gang?

Like Dafydd, Ann found support from the highest levels in her quest to give the cabbages a bit of sex education. Ann’s work was funded by the Health Education Council, who paid her to ‘develop sex education programmes which are still widely used’.

I think that I might have met someone who was using one of Ann’s sex education programmes in about 2002. I was lodging with a lady and her young adult learning disabled daughter in a village near Caernarfon when I was told by the young woman that a particularly unsavoury neighbour had told her mum that the young woman needed sex education lessons and he was the one to do it. This man was an alcoholic and his wife had stolen from the home of the young woman and her mum – the alkie and his wife had also been doing the shopping for the vulnerable mother and daughter but forgot to hand the change over. I was sufficiently concerned about the prospect of the sex education lessons – particularly as the young woman had told me that the potential sex educator was a ‘mochyn dwrg’ (Welsh for ‘bad pig’) and that she hated him – to challenge the sex educator and his wife. The lady and her daughter with whom I was lodging were both clients of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team. After I challenged the Mochyn Drwg and his wife, they rang the Arfon Team – who had only months previously forced out of my teaching job (see post ‘Have The Lambs Stopped Screaming?’). The Arfon team then contacted the aunties of the young woman and told them that a dangerous psychiatric patient had moved into the house with their niece.

Yes, a case conference was held – not because of the Mochyn Drwg’s intentions towards the young woman, but because of the ‘risk’ that I presented to her. I discovered that the ring leader was a particularly poisonous social worker called Julie Evans. I did not know who Julie Evans was, but she managed to tell half of Caernarfon that I was a ‘danger to kids’. Dear old Julie was finally sacked some years later for the serious neglect of clients. So Julie then found herself a job in a GP’s surgery as a counsellor.

At the case conference, the young woman repeated very clearly that she liked me but was frightened of the Mochyn Drwg. The Hergest whistleblower attended the case conference and reminded everyone that there had been  no allegations at all of any wrongdoing on my part. The Arfon Team then told the lady and her daughter that they would not receive any ‘services’ as long as I lived at their house.

The young woman had been the subject of an untoward sexual incident previously. When she had been a patient in the Hergest Unit.

Some months later, the Mochyn Drwg’s wife and daughter appeared in the local paper. There was a grade A row because the Mochyn Drwg’s wife and daughter had accused the ex-husband of the Mochyn Drwg’s wife of molesting his daughter years previously. As a result he had been forced out of his home by vigilante action. His side of the story was that his ex-wife and daughter were unscrupulous and had made false allegations against him as well as other people.

So imagine my surprise when some years later, the Mochyn Drwg’s wife appeared once more in the ‘Daily Post’, this time as headline news. She was telling a tale of a medical miracle which had taken place at Ysbyty Gwynedd. The Mochyn Drwg’s wife had experienced heart failure and had been brought back to life at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Not just once but many, many times. She lay on the floor and a heroic cardiologist put the jump leads on her chest and again and again she was resurrected, Lazarus-like, as she repeatedly died. The whole scene had been witnessed by her daughter, who told the ‘Daily Post’ of the gruesome scene with was accompanied by screams ringing out through the hospital. The cardiologist’s heroics were such that he had even presented the case of the Mochyn Drwg’s wife at a conference in Manchester.

This well-publicised miracle happened at a most convenient time for the cardiology dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd, because they were in a spot of trouble after the death of Professor Duncan Tanner that had occurred there just a few weeks previously. Duncan Tanner was an historian at Bangor University who had undergone heart surgery in Manchester. Duncan survived the surgery undertaken at Manchester that was considered to be risky and had been booked into Ysbyty Gwynedd for an entirely routine, low risk procedure. He died in Ysbyty Gwynedd and no-one was able to explain why. Duncan was 51 yrs old.

Bangor University were pole-axed by Duncan’s death because he was one of the most senior members of staff and was helping to run the place. The senior management of Bangor University didn’t have much luck at the hands of the NHS – Duncan’s colleague, the VC – another historian – had lost his wife not that long before Duncan’s death. The VC’s wife failed to survive treatment for a brain tumour at the Walton Centre in Liverpool. That’s the Walton Centre that was run by the paedophiles’ friends, who managed to successfully treat another member of staff at Bangor University who had a brain tumour at pretty much the same time as the VC’s wife. Who was the member of staff who made a full recovery? She was a lecturer in social work who had previously worked as a social worker in north Wales and was a colleague of the paedophiles. Her husband was also a social worker in north Wales who was a colleague of the paedophiles. They were both good friends of the legendary crooked Councillors of Anglesey County Council.

It is of course possible that the VC’s wife was unlucky and had a tumour with a poor prognosis and that for some inexplicable reason Duncan died as a result of a routine very low risk procedure. But when the NHS is run by those who ran a paedophile ring and had interests in serious organised crime, one cannot believe anything that is said by Top Doctors. One can also see for oneself that the paedophiles’ colleagues and friends have rather better experiences and outcomes at the hands of the NHS than those who have challenged Dafydd and the gang or are closely associated with anyone who has.

So perhaps the Mochyn Drwg and his wife, Ann and Dave, of Waunfawr, Caernarfon, would like to come forward and give us the lowdown on the sex education that Dave had planned for his young neighbour as well as the reason behind that dreadful publicity concerning Ann’s ex-husband and give us some solid clinical evidence to back up that ludicrous story about Ann returning from the dead repeatedly when the cardiologists at Ysbyty Gwynedd were in need of good PR after Duncan died at their hands for no good reason.

Well Dave, were you using Ann Craft’s sex education programme for the vulnerable, as developed by the sex trafficking gang in the 1970s? Or had you updated and adapted it yourself?

Ann and Dave were not the only people who were impressed by Ann Craft’s pedagogic skills. After that ground-breaking work with the paedophile gang in north Wales, in 1987 Ann was given a research post at Nottingham University. She was appointed to a lecturing post the following year and in 1996 became a Reader in Learning Disabilities in 1996, conducting work with Caroline Downes on ‘the sexuality needs of people with profound learning disabilities’. Ann died in 1997 – presumably she wasn’t within spitting distance of any Top Docs from Ysbyty Gwynedd who had experience in raising the deceased.

Gwynne the lobotomist died towards the end of 1986. Nottingham University found a home for Ann in 1987 – the year in which Professor Oliver Brooke, the Prof of Paediatrics at St George’s Medical School, was released from prison on appeal by Lord Chief Justice Geoffrey Lane. Lane likened Brooke’s vast collection of child porn to a collection of cigarette cards. My granny used to collect the cards that used to be given away free in the PG tips boxes – she even went to the trouble of sticking them in the special little books that were provided. I should have suggested that she had a go with child porn.

Oliver Brooke was a key figure in a pan-European paedophile ring.

In Jan 1987 Alison Taylor contacted Margaret Thatcher and told her that she had witnessed abuse of children in care in north Wales – in Nov 1987 Alison was sacked by Gwynedd County Council. By 1987 Mary Wynch had begun legal action against Dafydd, Risley Remand Centre and Clwyd Health Authority after gaining permission to go ahead from Lord Donaldson, the Master of the Rolls  (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’). During the early months of 1987, I made representation about the serious criminality of Dafydd et al to the Mental Health Act Commission and to the relevant NHS authorities.

The paedophile ring of which Brooke was a member of in south London had contacts with Dafydd and the gang in north Wales (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’).

In June 1987, Rhodri Morgan was elected as Labour MP for Cardiff West, George Thomas’s former constituency. Rhodri Morgan’s father was an academic who held very senior posts in Swansea University and the University of Wales. Rhodri’s wife Julie was a social worker.

In 1987 the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal occurred, which provided a very useful distraction to the concerns being raised by Alison Taylor, Mary Wynch and me (see post ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas And The Culprits Were Named’).

In Feb 1988, the year in which Nottingham University raised Ann Craft to the position of lecturer, Alison Taylor wrote to the Health Minister Tony Newton and described a brutal assault that she had witnessed.

During the months of May-June 1988, the allegations which led to the Nottingham Satanic Abuse Scandal began to emerge.

July 1988 saw the publication of the Report written by Lord Elizabeth Butler-Sloss that concealed the Cleveland Scandal. There were links between the gang in the north east of England and Dafydd’s gang in north Wales (see post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’). In 1988 I was working at the University of Surrey for the Cancer Research Campaign and unbeknown to me, my colleagues were busy with Dr Tony Francis’s former colleague Dr Peter Mcguire and also stole my data which was given to Professor Nicola Curtin, at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Medical School who published it under her own name (see posts ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’).

In 1989, Ann Craft, along with Hilary Brown, convened the first national conference on the sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities. Brown tells us in Ann’s obituary that there was ‘much work to do to ensure that the odds that such abuse would occur was lowered’ and ‘to support and protect people who had been abused’.

In the summer of 1989 Professor Robert Owen, Professor Robert Bluglass and Dr Colin Berry concealed serious criminality on the part of Dafydd, Tony Francis, Gwynedd Social Services, Gwynedd Health Authority, Clwyd Health Authority and the North Wales Police whilst ‘investigating’ my complaint (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’).

In June 1989 Yorkshire Television approached Alison Taylor regarding a documentary about the abuse of kids in north Wales and filmed her extensively in Sept 1989.

In 1989 Gwynedd Health Authority tried to obtain a High Court injunction against me preventing me from even writing to them in my attempts to pursue my complaint as well as preventing me from entering any of their premises. They also held a case conference, along with Gwynedd Social Services, without my knowledge, led by a man of whom I had never even heard, which concluded by declaring me to be very dangerous and in need of banging up in a secure hospital (see post ‘The Night Of The (Dr Chris) Hunter’).

In 1992 – mid-way through the police investigation into the possibility of a ‘VIP’ paedophile ring in Cheshire and north Wales – Ann Craft established and became the Director of NAPSAC – the National Association for the Protection from Sexual Abuse of Adults and Children with Learning Disabilities. NAPSAC was an organisation within Nottingham University.

Hilary Brown explained that Ann Craft became ‘a regional authority’ on the sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities. Ann certainly knew a great deal about such matters. She was consulted by the DoH, the Association of Directors of Social Services, ACPO and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sexual Abuse and Learning Disabilities.

Ann Craft was the first social worker to be admitted to the Royal College of Medicine’s learning disabilities committee in 1993. I bet they loved her, she probably came with a personal recommendation from Dafydd. In 1993 the North Wales Police announced that they had found no evidence of a paedophile ring.

In Oct 1993 Ron Davies was appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales.

In 1996, Ann was asked to convene a ‘sexuality group’ for the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability. Of course she was, that was the year in which the Jillings Report was submitted to Clwyd County Council and was immediately completely suppressed on the advice of Cherie and Tony’s mate Michael Beloff QC (see post ‘The Banality of Evil’) and in which William Hague subsequently announced the Waterhouse Inquiry. There was havoc in north Wales.

Practitioners ‘flocked’ to Ann’s workshops – she worked and spoke in Hong Kong, Japan, Belgium, Australia, America, Italy, Iceland and Israel.

NAPSAC was the ‘leading organisation for promoting sexuality and independence and created a new way of thinking for practitioners and organisations around the needs of the people they supported. NAPSAC introduced sex education and safeguarding policies for services across Nottinghamshire and nationally became a champion for the rights of people with learning disabilities’.

In 1997, Pam Cooke was appointed Director of NAPSAC. In 1998 NAPSAC was relaunched as the Ann Craft Trust (ACT) in recognition of ‘the enormous impact of Dr Ann Craft’s work in the field and to reflect the broadening of ACT’s remit to include safeguarding from all types of abuse’.

Pam developed ACT to become ‘nationally renowned as a safeguarding expert and an advocate for equality and the rights of children with disabilities and adults at risk’.

Throughout 1997, the former residents of children’s homes in north Wales were called liars as they told the Waterhouse Inquiry how they had been starved, gang-raped, beaten and injured whilst in care.

In 1997 the mental health services in north Wales went to great lengths to frame me and another patient in order to have us imprisoned (see post ‘A Solicitor’s Letter From North East Wales MIND’).

The Ann Craft Trust works ‘to minimise the risk of abuse of disabled children and adults at risk’. It has worked with the Gov’ts Forced Marriage Unit, the Dept of Health and others on forced marriage, child sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, financial abuse and disability hate crime. The ACT ran a whistleblowing project.

Deborah Kitson is currently the CEO of ACT. Between 1977-1992, Deborah worked as a social worker with children and adults with learning disabilities, then for Nottinghamshire Social Services and Health Authority as Implementation Officer where she assisted in the production of guidelines and their implementation and revision. Deborah was also a consultant for other agencies developing policies and guidelines on sexuality and the protection of people with learning disabilities.

Deborah was the Co-ordinator of ACT, 1998-2002. So Deborah was in post when the Waterhouse Report was published.

Deborah has continued to facilitate training on a wide range of associated issues and regularly presents at national conferences. She represents the ACT on a number of Gov’t bodies and contributes to the planning and implementation of new national initiatives. She was also a member of the Steering Group of ‘No Secrets’ and is the external representative on a number of Adult Safeguarding Boards.

If there’s going to be No Secrets Deborah, please do tell the full story behind the Nottingham Satanic Panic in which the most extraordinary allegations were made against innocent people by social workers, allegations which were found to be completely baseless.

Glanville Owen did a postgrad course at Nottingham University, I think during the 1970s. Glanville was the senior manager employed by Gwynedd Social Services who was responsible for children’s homes whilst the paedophile gang busied themselves in those homes (see post ‘I Know Nuzzing…’).

The ghost of Ann Craft and Bryn-y-Neuadd haunted north Wales for years, long after Bryn-y-Neuadd had been re-invented as the administrative HQ for Gwynedd Community Health Trust and a medium secure unit for Dangerous Loonies.

One of the Angels who used to work at Bryn-y-Neuadd alongside Ann who was also member of Cabbages Lib, a man called Brian, became a nurse tutor and when Bangor University began running a nursing degree he metamorphosed into a lecturer in the School of Healthcare Sciences. Years later, I was co-supervising a PhD in that School and one day after going over there for a supervision session, the PhD student told me that after I left the building, Brian walked up to the School’s receptionist, demanded to know what I was doing in there and told her that I was dangerous and ‘attacked people with knives’. The receptionist was not Of The Paedophiles’ Friends and observed to the PhD student that Brian had always been a bit weird, but he must have gone really bonkers now.

By then I really was fed up with members of the paedophile gang who knew nothing about me except that I was the person who had written to Ministers about Dafydd et al thus it was open season, so I made a complaint to the University authorities. The dreadful Brian disappeared from the University a few weeks later without explanation. Sadly his mates remained – Seren Roberts, Gwerfyl Roberts, Louise Ingham, Ruhi Behi etc. A bunch of third rate morons who had all worked alongside a gang of paedophiles and were now reconstructed as academics and given responsibility for training the next generation of Angels.

Hilary Brown ended her obituary of Ann Craft by reminiscing about a trip to Australia that they went on and how Ann, ‘an intrepid eater of sea food’ – sat opposite her in when Ann ‘devoured, undeterred, something that looked like an extra from a horror film’. I wonder why the liberator of the oppressed Hilary chose that particular expression?

In 1990, Nicky Mitchell-Heggs, the occupational physician at St George’s Hospital Medical School, told me that when she was a medical student she was on placement at a hospital for learning disabled people and she witnessed an Angel ‘feeding a creature pieces of chocolate as the creature smiled and drooled’. Nicky was so repulsed by the ‘drooling creature’ that she related this anecdote after I told her of the criminality that I had witnessed in the mental health services in north Wales to give me an example of how dedicated some Angels were.

Nicky trained as a psychiatrist and she now has a private psychotherapy practice, as does her husband. Nicky enjoys ski-ing and going to the opera! No getting gang-banged in a hell-hole for Nicky, that was just for the cabbages/vegetables/drooling creatures, whilst Ann Craft helped them explore their sexuality and protected them from abusers.

Members of the London elite employed as Top Doctors are not the only people who have problems with drooling creatures. The heiress to the Llanrug Post Office fortune – they had a penismobile parked on the bit of concrete outside their PO to let everyone know how superior to the rest of the village they were – was seriously worried some six years ago when she became pregnant, lest she gave birth to a Mong. I’m not sure exactly what a Mong is, I suspect that it might be similar to a cabbage, a vegetable or a drooling creature, but the reason why the heiress was so concerned was that she feared divine retribution because she had hated Mongs all of her life and admitted that she had been very unpleasant to Mongs. But then the heiress hated a lot of things and indeed people, including her job and all of her colleagues. She was a school teacher, a Head of Dept in a Welsh-medium school near Welshpool.

Keith Fearns – I think that there might be an unsuitable person employed in teaching who seems to have slipped through your net (see post ‘Have The Lambs Stopped Screaming?’)…

The en mass sexual abuse of learning disabled people in north Wales continued after Ann Craft turned her toes up in 1997. My post ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’ described Prestwood Homes – company slogan ‘Special Homes For Special People’ – which was a sex trafficking organisation targeting people with learning disabilities and mental health problems. It really is quite simple to avoid scrutiny whilst sexually abusing vulnerable people. All one has to do is bang on about ’empowerment’, ‘special people’, ‘support’ and print a photo on your promotional material of two pairs of hands entwined and splash the phrase ‘Positive About Disabled People’ everywhere and you’re away. Should anybody ever raise any concerns about your activities, you just accuse them of being a paedophile and state that they have mental health problems and there will be an investigation into them not you. Dafydd had this down to a fine art years ago, he led the field and even now on the CAIS website, there is a photo of Dafydd doing his best to look like a nice old gentleman – someone’s given him a the bath and some clean clothes for the purposes of the photo shoot – and caring hands have been laid upon his as he holds his walking stick. You’d never believe that he ran a paedophile gang.

Another old devil from yesteryear was Dr John Hamilton, who was appointed Medical Director of Broadmoor in 1983. John Hamilton was in post during the Savile Years and he knew that Savile was sexually abusing patients. But then John Hamilton knew that many of the female patients in particular at Broadmoor were there only because they had accused health and social care staff of abusing them. It was John Hamilton who found space in Broadmoor to accommodate June and Jennifer Gibbons from Pembrokeshire whilst they were still teenagers after they started telling people that they were prostitutes (see post ‘One Dangerous Fucker’). There are no recent references on the internet to Hamilton, I suspect that like a few other leading lights at Broadmoor he disappeared in a puff of smoke when the horrible truth about Savile was made public.

In 1986 Hamilton appeared as an expert witness in a murder case. The circumstances of the murder were open to question and a couple had been accused of carrying it out together, one having allegedly influenced the other. There was little firm evidence, nearly everything hinged on Hamilton’s opinion. I have found a copy of the psychiatric report that Hamilton submitted to the Court. He uses the very same phrases and the very same sentence construction that a number of ‘experts’ used when writing reports about me in the late 80s and early 90s. The experts in question – including Bluglass – were friends and colleagues of Hamilton.

I have mentioned previously that I suspect that Dafydd’s affidavits about me – or at least parts of them – may have been drafted by John Stalker, the Greater Manchester Police officer who had links to north Wales and who was investigated for corruption, because the styles of writing are so unusual yet so similar. Dafydd and Stalker were educated in different countries, to different levels and don’t even speak the same first language, so I wouldn’t expert them to use exactly the same style of writing. Hamilton et al had all been educated in the same tradition by the same people, so I do not think that one of them was necessarily drafting all the ‘expert reports’. I think that they were using a stock set of phrases and terms and indeed diagnoses in whatever way suited them. Meaningful assessments of patients’ conditions did not come into it. They spouted the same old drivel no matter whom they were writing about, whether it was Dennis Nilsen, a lesser fiend, or me. Which would explain how people whom I did not even know existed ‘assessed’ me and offered to provide reports for courts – even when I wasn’t facing charges (see post ‘The Night Of The (Dr Chris) Hunter’). There were only a small number of forensic psychiatrists providing such reports, they all knew each other and they were all concealing serious organised crime in the health and welfare services, including that of Dafydd and the paedophiles.

My post ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services in the 1980s’ mentioned the sorry state of the UK’s mental health services at that time and some of the very unsuitable people employed at the top of the system. Edwina Currie, Ken Clarke and Trumpers were employed as Health Ministers and Savile and his mate Alan Franey were running Broadmoor – and Ashworth and Rampton were run by almost equally unsuitable people. The Under-Secretary responsible for Mental Health in 1987 was Brian McGinnis, who was later banned from working with children and vulnerable people.

There was another person of interest as well – Cliff Graham, the Under-Secretary responsible for Mental Health who succeeded Brian McGinnis.

Clifford Graham died in 1994 and his obituary explained that he was ‘one of the people who made things happen in the NHS’. Graham worked with Sir Roy Griffiths and introduced ‘general management’ in the NHS; he collaborated with the Louis Blom-Cooper QC in ‘tackling problems in mental health’ and he was Chairman of Newpin, ‘an organisation concerned with disadvantage and abuse in the family’. Graham epitomised ‘imaginative management’ and ‘would not be distracted’ from pursuing action on policies that he thought to be right. Graham was said to take ‘pleasure in exploring unconventional pathways to a proper end’.

Blom-Cooper pretended to be deeply shocked at the state of special hospitals when the scandals became so big that they could no longer be denied. Blom-Cooper was part of the problem – he was Chairman of the Mental Health Act Commission whilst the MHAC colluded and concealed the serious criminality (see post ‘Security, Security’). It was whilst Blom-Cooper Chaired the MHAC that Graham worked with him – Graham will have known that Blom-Cooper was concealing organised sexual abuse, the framing of innocent people and the murders of witnesses.

Presumably Clifford’s ‘imaginative management’ and ‘unconventional pathways’ from which he would not be distracted, included giving white collar gangsters running international sex trafficking rings complete domain over the mental health services. Clifford Graham could not have done that by accident, Dafydd and Savile could not have been passed off as even remotely suitable people for their jobs.

Cliff Graham met Jimmy Savile and it was Graham who established the Special Health Authority for secure hospitals – an organisation that was the root of such serious problems that it was abolished in 1996.

Cliff Graham grew up in Liverpool and qualified as a barrister in 1969 through qualifications gained at night school . He began his career in the civil service as a Clerical Officer in the Admiralty, 1954-59. Others who were involved with the concealing of the criminality of Dafydd et al including Admiral Sir Alec Bingley and Jim Callaghan passed through the Admiralty.

Cliff Graham joined the Ministry of Health in 1965 and remained in that Ministry for the rest of his civil service career, spending many years during the 1970s and 80s at very senior levels. Graham will have known about Dafydd and Gwynne for years before he became Under-Secretary. In the early 80s Cliff Graham worked with Sir Roy Griffiths on the NHS Management Inquiry. Graham was promoted to Under-Secretary in 1983 to see through the introduction of general management in the NHS.

Graham worked with Lord Derek Rayner, the Chairman and Chief Exec of Marks and Spencer. Rayner worked with Ted Heath’s Gov’t on MoD procurement and then advised Thatch’s administrations. Rayner died in 1997, ‘a bachelor who left no survivors’. Marks and Spencer seems to have done rather more than flogging not very exciting clothes. It was M&S who footed the bill for the purchase of a grandiose building to house the newly created Royal College of Psychiatrists, when it didn’t have two pennies to rub together and was a laughing stock among other medical specialities (see post The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’). Why was M&S so keen to support people who concealed organised sexual abuse?

Cliff Graham then spent a sabbatical year at the LSE working with Brian Abel-Smith. Abel-Smith was an economist and political advisor who was massively influential in shaping health and social welfare policies post-WW II.

Abel-Smith was a Spad to a number of Labour Gov’t Ministers – Richard Crossman, Barbara Castle and David Ennals, all of whom concealed the abuse and deaths of vulnerable people at the hands of the NHS and welfare services. Abel-Smith set up the Black Inquiry into Health Inequalities. He steered the development of health services in over 50 countries and advised the WHO and the EEC.

Abel-Smith graduated from Clare College, Cambridge – he was a member of the Cambridge Union and the University Labour Club. His doctoral research in the early 50s was on the cost of the NHS and concluded that the NHS was very good value for money and needed further investment. He spent the rest of his career at the LSE. Abel-Smith worked with the sociologist Peter Townsend – who had connections to the paedophiles’ friends but the relevant info has magically disappeared from the internet recently. Abel-Smith and Townsend’s 1965 book ‘The Poor and the Poorest’ was used to launch the Child Poverty Action Group, with which Abel-Smith remained closely associated for the rest of his life.

During the 1960s, Abel-Smith was a Governor of several regional NHS Boards and London hospital management committees, including St Thomas’s. Tommy’s does not serve and is certainly not staffed by the poor and the poorest. It is the Tommy’s contingent who are most likely to have Harley Street practices and furthermore some of Dafydd’s mates worked there. But then man of the people Abel-Smith was from an aristocratic family and distantly related to HM the Queen – a lot of people from that sort of background seem to believe that Tommy’s Serves The Poor.

By the 1990s, Abel-Smith had moved away from his commitment to state-funded services and was promoting the idea of user charges.

Abel-Smith was offered a safe Labour seat in 1957 but rejected the idea of becoming an MP because he feared that his homosexuality would become public and cause his family embarrassment. However he did take a leading role in the Fabian Society for over 30 years.

Abel-Smith helped set up the inquiry into the Ely Hospital Scandal in 1969. Abel-Smith and the comrades must have known how dreadful the abuse and neglect was in institutions like Ely Hospital – furthermore, in the defence of the horrors presiding at Ely, it was pointed out that other places such as the North Wales Hospital, Denbigh were much worse…

Whilst Abel-Smith was working for Barbara Castle in the early 1970s, Castle also appointed Jack Straw as an advisor, commenting that she had appointed Straw for his ‘low cunning’. In 1978, frustrated by the war between the Top Doctors and the Gov’t, Abel-Smith accepted a post advising Peter Shore MP on housing and urban planning issues.

After Labour were defeated at the 1979 General Election, Abel-Smith advised a number of health policy think tanks such as the King’s Fund and the Nuffield Trust to advise on reforming British healthcare. Abel-Smith also served on CAB advice committees. Lucille Hughes and other paedophiles’ friends were involved with the management of the CAB.

So Abel-Smith knew for years that the good value NHS was the most fantastic pig trough for the consultants of the London hospitals who picked up a substantial NHS salary whilst moonlighting at Harley Street and he also knew that kids in care and people with disabilities both mental and physical were being abused and were dying of total neglect and that this was concealed by successive Gov’ts. He then got so sick of the excellent value Top Docs who never stopped demanding more – even after Abel-Smith had so helpfully written so much arguing that they should be given more dosh – that he was up and off to work for paedophiles’ friend Peter Shore, who was MP for a constituency in which disadvantaged kids were being sent en mass to children’s homes in north Wales (see post ‘Apocalypse Now’). Abel-Smith will have known about that, because he was involved with housing and planning.

Abel-Smith worked for the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank. Between 1959-61, along with Richard Titmuss, Abel-Smith advised the Gov’t of Mauritius on ‘a family planning programme’. I haven’t had time to research this, but if I know anything about ‘family planning programmes’ for British colonies at the time, it could well have involved things that people would prefer to forget about – such as forced sterilisation of the natives…

In 1976 Abel-Smith advised the EEC with regard to the cost of pharmaceuticals in particular. In the 1980s, Abel-Smith advised WHO (World Health Organisation).

Abel-Smith’s partner John Sarbutt was an actor and landscape gardener. They lived between their homes in London and Kent and founded an upmarket menswear business together which went international. Abel-Smith and Sarbutt made regular trips to Italy to buy the latest styles. Customers included The Rolling Stones, Joan Collins and Warren Beatty.

Abel-Smith died in 1996 of carcinoma of the pancreas, which suggests that he might have been a heavy drinker.

Like so many of the post-WW II socialists who sculpted the NHS and welfare services, Abel-Smith knew how dreadful the parts of the system dealing with the most vulnerable were and ignored it. He wasn’t going to end up in Dafydd’s dungeon himself, he was instead flogging expensive clothes to the stars whom Dafydd’s network were cultivating and to whom they were supplying young people for sex.

A ‘chance encounter’ led to Clifford Graham becoming a Trustee and then Chairman of Newpin, ‘an organisation concerned with disadvantage and abuse in the family’, which began in south London and spread across Britain. Newpin seems to have been established in the early 90s – the original Newpin  underwent a merger with the Family Welfare Association and was then declared insolvent, although its descendant, the Newpin Family Centre, still exists. The Newpin Family Centre is supported by Marylebone Rotary Club, BBC Children in Need, the Abel Charitable Trust, the City of Westminster and the John Lyon’s Charity.

Cliff Graham was Director of the Institute for Health at King’s College, 1990-94.

Graham undertook several commissions on a wide variety of topics such as health services in Jordan, managed care in the United States and initiatives on alternative medicines and therapies.

Clifford Graham lived near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Prof Robert Owen – who did such a valiant job concealing serious crime in north Wales and Liverpool for so many years (see post ‘In Memoriam -Professor Robert Owen’) – had a daughter who lived at Shapwick, a village on the Somerset levels not a million miles away from Shepton Mallet.

I’d like to know who it was who made the decision to appoint Cliff Graham as the highest ranking mandarin in the Division of Mental Health replacing the very questionable Brian McGinnis- as with the appointment of Bing Spear to the role of Chief Inspector of the Home Office Drugs Branch (see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’), whoever did so did it with the knowledge that Clifford Graham was a deeply corrupt man who systematically ensured that the mental health services were run by and for sex traffickers.

Many of my appearances in the High Court as a result of the perjury on the parts of the Top Docs and staff of Gwynedd Social Services occurred on the watch of Cliff Graham.

In my post ‘Have The Lambs Stopped Screaming?’ I described how in 2002 Gwynedd Social Services flatly refused to investigate a complaint against Keith Fearns, a social worker who broke confidentiality, lied and threatened my former employer in order to force me out of my job. The Director of Gwynedd Social Services at the time was Non Williams – full name Eleri Non Williams – whose own husband Martin Davidson had been appointed as Director of Mental Health for Gwynedd Social Services and received a handsome pay rise negotiated by Non. I discussed in the same post how very inappropriate people who were paedophiles’ friends were running and staffing Rape Crisis in north Wales.

I have discovered that one Eleri Non Williams, Director of Gwynedd Social Services, was a Director of the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre for North Wales. Another Director of the Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre was Jody Mardula. Jody Mardula is a Mindfulness practitioner who works at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University. The whole Mindfulness bandwagon was established by Professor Mark Williams after he conducted a research fraud with the paedophile gang and their associates in the late 1980s when he was working as a clinical psychologist in north Wales, alongside Dafydd et al (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’).

Yesterday BBC News Wales ran a feature on how school children in Wales were benefiting from practising Mindfulness. A teacher stated that it helps them connect. Connect with what was not made clear – a research fraud perpetrated by the associates of a paedophile gang one presumes.

With Rape Crisis and health and social care generally in north Wales, I noticed that the best people were systematically forced out of the field by the paedophiles’ friends and that this happened with Mindfulness as well. No-one in north Wales witnessed the miracles as a result of Mindfulness that Mark Williams published, but I did know a very small number of people who found it helpful and all three of these people embraced it to such an extent that they developed a very deep interest in Buddhism.

Only one of these people was a mental health patient – he would have been an excellent advert for Mindfulness and he would have made a very good facilitator for the numerous sessions that were being run across north Wales. One day I asked him if he’d ever thought of going to work with the Mindfulness Centre in Bangor. It transpired that he had approached them a number of times but had been very firmly told that there was no possibility of him working with them. He observed that one had to be part of Mark Williams’s clique to get work there. I knew that the Centre had a reputation as somewhere which was crawling with paedophiles’ friends who had landed their jobs as a result of cronyism, but then it occurred to me why this man was never going to be allowed across the threshold. He wasn’t a whistleblower, but he had witnessed far, far too much. He had been shockingly neglected by the GPs surgery in Llanberis and the ‘medication’ prescribed for his depression had sent him psychotic. He was left to rot and find his own way back to the land of the compos mentis. But far more damning was that he was a very good mate of someone who knew about Dafydd and the paedophiles, who had been unlawfully imprisoned after complaining about the Hergest Unit and who had experienced one of Dafydd’s ‘nursing homes’. There was no way that Mark Williams’s empire were going to give someone who had that much crap on Williams’s colleagues a job.

Non Williams had another sideline as well as Rape and Sexual Abuse Support. Non was also a Director for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering. So Non will be able to shed light on the supply of Chinese babies to Anglesey around the millennium. Healthy Chinese babies as well, available for adoption via Anglesey County Council. It was really great, people didn’t have to wait long for a Chinese baby, it was a remarkably speedy process and all sorts of people were able to get one. It was an expensive process, but if you had the dosh I was told that the lady from Anglesey County Council was most helpful – a lady called Jean, she told people that rules were there to get around. She certainly did get around the rules, it was incredible.

If Non can explain how the crooks and incompetents running Anglesey County Council – who could not run even the most basic of ‘services’ for the local people and one of whom was imprisoned – managed to negotiate a supply of Chinese babies for adoption with very few questions asked I’d like to hear about it. Non will definitely know about the Chinese babies, because Non lived in Menai Bridge and one of her neighbours got a Chinese baby. In 2000 to be precise Non, I heard all about it and met the baby.

Perhaps Ieuan Wyn Jones knew something about the Chinese babies, Ieuan was both the AM and MP for Ynys Mon when the babies were arriving. Ieuan is a lawyer so I am sure that he would have raised concerns if those Chinese babies were being procured by a process that was in any way questionable.

The good burghers of Menai Bridge certainly know where the action is. One of them definitely knew that there was organised sexual abuse on Anglesey in the late 1980s because they told me. They named a pupil at Ysgol David Hughes whom they stated was known to be ‘completely barmy’ and told me that for years she had been abused by a male family member and passed around to older men in the area for sex. Not that this person was that concerned, they didn’t like the family and warned everyone not to have anything to do with the Nutter. The person who told me this was a close relative of a local star from Menai Bridge, Dr Melanie Abas. Melanie went to Ysgol David Hughes herself, then to Birmingham University where she qualified as a Top Doctor. Melanie has completed a Masters degree at London University in Depression, a Masters degree in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a Doctorate in Psychiatric Epidemiology at the University of Auckland. Melanie is currently employed as a consultant psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and also holds the position of Reader in Global Mental Health at King’s College, London. Melanie is involved in teaching Johnny Foreigner in developing countries how to run their mental health services. According to her Linked In profile, the causes that Melanie cares about are ‘education, health and poverty alleviation’.

I know for a fact that Melanie knows a great deal about Dafydd.

Melanie, as one who is concerned with global health and poverty alleviation, why did you and those close to you drip with contempt for the victims of the paedophile gang? You have been waving your Top Doctor credentials about for a very long time now and you were already working as a psychiatrist when the Waterhouse Report was published. You have not said a word concerning your knowledge of Dafydd. Or did you use your knowledge of Dafydd – an alumnus of the institution which employs you – to gain your current position?

Melanie married another Top Doctor, like herself a psychiatrist – Dr Jeremy Broadhead. Jeremy also trained and worked at the Maudsley. He now works in south east London and Kent and works closely with the Priory Hospital at Hayes Grove near Bromley. Jeremy has held the post as Director of the Priory Group. He has worked in ‘centres of excellence’ in London, Baltimore and Auckland. What with marrying Melanie, I am sure that he found out about Dafydd as well.

Melanie’s dad Jan knew about Dafydd and the paedophiles too. Jan Abas was an academic at Bangor University whilst Gwynne the lobotomist and Dr DGE Wood were facilitating the sex trafficking gang via the Student Health Centre. Not that Jan was Of Them – Jan Abas really loathed Top Doctors and was bitterly disappointed when Melanie applied to do medicine as opposed to another science. The Top Docs hated Jan Abas in return – DGE Wood was rude about him on the grounds that Jan Abas was having affairs with his students. Whereas Wood was assisting a paedophile gang.

The Top Doctors and their associates are becoming increasingly desperate. Yesterday, Lords Darzi and Prior – the news reports stressed their peerages and of course Darzi’s status as an ’eminent surgeon’ – told the world that the NHS needed £50 billion more by 2030 to avoid disaster.
Darzi is a Top Doctor who in 2006 advised New Labour on the plan for London’s healthcare for the next five to ten years. It was Darzi who dreamt up the idea of polyclinics – they haven’t been very successful have they Lord Darzi? Gordon gave Darzi a peerage and Darzi was also given a job as a Minister. Darzi wielded massive influence over health policy for quite some time. ‘The Guardian’ loved him and stressed that unlike his predecessors, he was not ‘waging war on medics’. No, Darzi is Of The Top Doctors and he has now done what the Top Docs always do when their ideas don’t work – he had demanded a great deal of money and has blamed NHS failure on those sodding patients who do insist on getting ill.
Why anyone is surprised that the NHS is now so obviously falling apart after Lord Darzi ‘improved morale’ and ‘public standing’ I do not know. Just look at Lord Darzi’s previous. In 1991 he was appointed as a consultant to the Central Middlesex Hospital. That hospital serves Brent and knew about the lethal social services on their patch which resulted in the death of Jasmine Beckford (see post ‘Mary Turner – An Appreciation’). Darzi moved to St Mary’s Hospital Paddington in 1994 – two years after that institution had participated in the lies and elaborate deception surrounding the circumstances of Sally Mugabe’s death (see post ’95 Glorious Years!’). In 1996 Darzi became Professor of Surgery at Imperial College and the Institute of Cancer Research and he is an honorary consultant at the Royal Marsden. He is a colleague of those who were involved in the serious research frauds described in previous posts, including ‘A Cause Close To Our Hearts’ and ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’).
Surgeons are very good at knowing about very serious shit, doing nothing about it and then allowing themselves to be wheeled out as the heroic face of the NHS, the cream of the profession, to reassure the public that all is basically well in a way that would not be half so convincing if Dafydd were to be adopted as the public face of the medical establishment.
Darzi is best known among lay people for his work on surgical robots. His work in that field may well be of the highest quality and if you’ve had a successful operation done by a robot, understandably you’ll be very grateful to Lord Darzi. However Lord Darzi has done bugger all for the many more thousands of people who have been neglected and mistreated by the NHS because they are elderly, learning disabled, children from disadvantaged backgrounds, people with mental health problems or simply have developed health problems because they are very poor. Lord Darzi likes machines which go ping and that is why he wants £50 billion. Meanwhile elderly or disabled people are denied home carers to help them get to the bog in the morning because that is too expensive.
Lord Darzi has gone global but I notice that his advice is sought by the oil rich Middle Eastern states rather than the people living in the Solomon Islands. I have a friend who spent a while working in the Solomon Islands improving welfare. He is someone who works on the ecology/social science interface and comes a lot cheaper than Lord Darzi. His work didn’t go tits up a few years later and he doesn’t want another £50 billion.
Lord Darzi’s partner in crime demanding £50 billion is Lord David Prior. David Prior went to school at Charterhouse and then read law at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was Chairman of the Cambridge University Conservative Association and was an officer of Cambridge University Students’ Union.
Prior qualified as a barrister in 1976, but immediately moved into investment banking. From 1977–80, he worked for the investment banks Lehman Brothers – now where do I remember that name from?? – and Lazard Freres in New York. Prior was seconded to the British Steel Corporation to work with Thatcher’s henchman Sir Ian MacGregor. The one who, along with his wife, stated that the striking miners who had lost everything were ‘paying the price for insubordination’.
Pass the truffles and lobster darling, I could do with a fifth course. More champagne Lord Darzi? Meanwhile down in Methyr Tydfil they just will not eat their five a day…
Prior was appointed MD of British Steel Service Centres Ltd and later Commercial Director of British Steel, establishing joint ventures in China, Turkey, Europe and North America. After British Steel, Prior managed a number of private steel and manufacturing businesses.
Isn’t the British steel industry now completely buggered??? I’m sure that I remember hearing about a crisis at Port Talbot not so long ago and a problem caused by China dumping subsidised steel onto the UK market. Three weeks later Lilibet welcomed a man from China who implemented that particular policy to a banquet at Buck House. Chinese dissidents who dared protest were carefully hidden from his view. Then George Osborne begged him to run the UK’s nuclear power industry.
David Prior was elected as the Tory MP for North Norfolk in 1997 and became Chief Exec of the Tory Party, Deputy Chairman and then in 2001, acting Chairman.
So that covers the years of the Waterhouse Inquiry and publication of the Report.
In 2001 the Lib Dem Norman Lamb succeeded Prior’s seat. Prior soon found himself a new toy to play with – in 2002 he became Chairman of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust. In Nov 2006 Prior resigned as Chairman. Days later Prior was arrested, as well as others, by Norfolk Constabulary who were investigating allegations of financial irregularities at Cawston Park Hospital (previously known as Cawston College), a private psychiatric hospital in Cawston, Norfolk, where Prior was non-executive Chairman.
Prior was cleared of involvement in the alleged fraud in Feb 2007 and subsequently reappointed as Chairman of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust. In 2009, Prior was invited to be Chairman of Ormiston Victory Academy in Norwich. He founded and Chairs two free schools, the Jane Austen College and Sir Isaac Newton Free School. Prior is also the Chairman of Norwich Primary Academy. In 2012, he became a Trustee of the Inspiration Trust. From 2005-2009 Prior was Chairman of Friends of Families House.
In recent years, a number of private hospitals for the learning disabled and people with mental health problems have sprung up in the Norfolk region. There has been a number of scandals with allegations of abuse. People have been placed in these establishments against the wishes of them and their families on the advice of Top Docs and social workers. Some of those being transported had no understanding of where they were going. At least two people from north Wales suffered this fate, one of them being a man with learning disabilities from Anglesey who had lived in north Wales for all of his life and who had difficulty understanding English. The decision was challenged in Court in London by a lawyer known to me who is one of those who has challenged the paedophiles’ friends. The placement was recommended by the appalling Top Doc Marie Savage, formerly of the Hergest Unit. Marie has a long track record of insulting patients, swearing at them and has been the subject of numerous complaints. The judge gave the lawyer a bollocking for challenging the decision of a caring Top Doc who only had the best interests of her patient at heart.
Some years ago I was told that a number of people were concerned about the welfare of Marie Savage’s children but being Marie Savage, no-one was daring to raise concerns through any official channels. As someone who was buying sandwiches in Tesco one lunchtime who found Marie Savage at my shoulder snarling down my ear ‘if you do anything to me I’ll call the police’, only to then watch Marie running out of the store cackling, I can testify that Marie is not a rational being. My lawyer did subsequently write to Marie and the NW Wales NHS Trust to request an explanation re Marie’s unfathomable conduct but she never received a reply.
I later met someone who’s young adult mentally ill son had been placed in a private psychiatric hospital in England – owned by the Cambian Group – against the wishes of him and his family on the advice of Marie Savage. He ‘absconded’ and was returned  to the hospital by the police. He told his mum that he ran away because he had been assaulted by the staff. His mum had been a patient in the North Wales Hospital many years previously and Marie’s reason for ignoring her concerns about her son’s welfare was recorded in the young man’s medical records – ‘mother schizophrenic’.
What no-one at the time knew was that when my medical records were finally handed over to me after a High Court order was served on the NW Wales NHS Trust, there were other people’s records muddled up with mine. Including the records of that young man’s mum. She had made a complaint of assault against an Angel years previously when she had been a patient at Denbigh. Documents in my possession demonstrate that the complaint was never investigated – intentionally.
A case of the sins of the mother perhaps Marie?
The bill for the places in private hospitals such as those owned by Cambian are footed by the NHS and/or social services. The places are usually priced at well over £1000/week as a result of the ‘needs’ of the poor sods incarcerated within, who would much rather be living with or near their families and friends. The companies owning such establishments are often venture capitalists or US healthcare companies. One such company is Cygnet Healthcare. Their Medical Director is one Dr Robert Francis Kehoe. Kehoe was one of those who lied about me – and Brown –  in an ‘expert witness’ report (see post ‘An Expert In Resistant Service Users’).
Perhaps Lord Prior, the barrister turned investment banker who is now an expert on healthcare, might know why so many of these shadowy institutions have sprung up in his part of the world.

On 28 Jan 2013 David Prior was appointed as Chairman of the CQC. In April 2014 he had a hip replacement operation paid for by private insurance but was treated in a public ward at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust.

In March 2015 Prior told a conference that ‘the role of the market is hugely limited in health and social care, in part because many of the people who need care the most – as many homeless people are – are often unheard; they have no power. The market requires people with power, people who can choose [in order to bring improvement]. In healthcare that’s not the case.’

Robert Kehoe’s employers Cygnet specialise in hospitals for ‘resistant service users’. They award a prize for the ‘service user of the year’.

On 14 May 2015 David Prior was appointed a junior Health Minister by Cameron. Prior bagged his peerage in May 2015.

On 21 Dec 2016, Prior was appointed as a junior Minister at the Dept for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and he is also currently Chairman of UCH, a place of nepotism and questionable research, as previously featured on this blog.

David Prior inherited the tendency to become a Tory peer, from his dad Lord Jim Prior. Jim Prior was the Tory MP for Lowestoft, then Waveney, in Suffolk, 1959-87. He was PPS to Ted Heath whilst Heath was Leader of the Opposition, then Minister for MAFF in Ted Heath’s Govt, 1970-72. Prior was then Leader of the Commons until Heath lost the General Election in 1974. When Thatch was elected, Prior was appointed Secretary of State for Employment, a position he retained until 1981. As unemployment rocketed and industry collapsed, Gentleman Jim wobbled dangerously and ended up being mocked as a wet. (Dr DGE Wood described a suicidal student as being ‘wet’. She was wet and I was dangerous, there’s no pleasing some people.) As a booby prize, Thatch gave Jim Prior N Ireland to play with and he remained as Secretary of State for N Ireland until 1984. He never returned to Gov’t and was seen as a critic of Thatch. But Gentleman Jim never told anyone what was going on at Kinora Boys’ Home and he certainly never blew the whistle on Sir Peter Morrison or Dafydd and the paedophiles.

Not that Jim twiddled his thumbs after he left Gov’t. Within days he became Chairman of GEC and ‘whilst travelling the world for GEC’, just happened to accept a number of positions on the Boards of Allders, East Anglian Radio, Barclays International, Barclays Bank, United Biscuits and J Sainsbury. Prior also served on the Boards of various educational, industrial and charitable organisations. Now I wonder which they would have been.

Whilst writing this blog and coming across so many CVs like Jim’s I was initially struck by how little meaningful contribution such folk could possibly have made when they sat on so many Boards. They cannot have had the time to actually do any work in those roles, it had to be a matter of cash for access. I’m also wondering how the hell they spent all the dosh that they were raking in. Even if they were greedy materialistic gits, surely there was a limit as to how much they and their nearest and dearest could actually spend, even when Sunday closing came to an end and it was 24 hour shopping all week long.

In 1986 Prior collaborated with John Cassels and Pauline Perry to creat the Council for Industry and Higher Education, which in 2013 became the National Centre for Universities and Business. (Note that the word ‘education’ is being erased from the titles of organisations that have doings with universities.)

Jim Prior was Chairman and Vice-President of the Rural Housing Trust.

Like David, Jim Prior went to Charterhouse and Pembroke College,  so that’s an inherited trait in the Prior family as well. Presumably, Lord David Prior is also carrying the dominant allele for concealing organised child abuse. He can’t help it poor bugger, it’s in his genes. However, I do think that future generations of Priors ought to be offered genetic counselling so that they fully understand the implications of this trait that will affect their children. Perhaps Lord Darzi could campaign to make the funding available for the screening.

After David Prior was arrested as part of that fraud investigation at Cawston Park Hospital, he spoke about the trauma of being wrongly arrested. We knew all about that in north Wales thanks to your dad David. Your dad who kept quiet about the murderous network of gangsters running a paedophile ring – who enjoyed Gov’t backing – which stretched between N Ireland, north Wales and involved the North Wales Police, the  Greater Manchester Police and other corrupt Top Cops (see post ‘Top Of The Cops’).

The media continue to give the general population positively dangerous advice after having sent everyone into a blue funk re the danger posed by paedophiles. I was in the opticians yesterday and they had a TV for the customers to watch whilst they were waiting so I watched a bit of Victoria Derbyshire.
Victoria was presenting a show on the problems of children who sexually abuse other children. Some examples given were serious, such as the nine year old boy who was attempting to persuade younger boys to let him have anal sex with them. Nine year olds don’t usually think of doing this spontaneously, it is highly likely that someone had shown that boy how to do this, so yes that is a matter for serious concern. However as ever, examples of the sort of curious play that young children do indulge in was conflated with problematic behaviour. One woman sent a message to Victoria telling her that a seven year old girl ‘touched’ her own daughter whilst they were lying in the sun. Victoria recommended speaking to a social worker. No Victoria, that is the worst possible option. Seven year olds do indeed ‘touch’ each other, it’s been happening for generations and is known as child development. It is social workers who have been colluding with organised abuse not seven year old girls. There was much talk of something called the pants rule. What can this possibly be – not to remove one’s underwear unless asked by a Top Doc or social worker probably.
I used to read a comic called ‘Bunty’ because it was full of stories about girls in boarding schools having adventures and doubling up as detectives which appealed to me. ‘Bunty’ took girls’ safety seriously and at the top of the pages there were slogans printed, one of which was ‘remember girls – never get into a car with a stranger’. I’m sure that ‘Bunty’ meant well, but they’d have been better off warning the girls about people employed as Top Doctors who did nothing but try to talk to former ‘Bunty’ readers about sex. ‘Remember girls – Dafydd and co are running a sex trafficking ring, the security services and just about everybody else knows about it but no-one is stopping him or indeed warning those being targeted’.
Some years ago one of the lecturers at Bangor University went on a ski-ing holiday during which he fell over and injured himself frequently. He quipped that if a social worker saw his bottom they’d take him into care. I reminded him that we were in north Wales, if his bottom had sustained injuries it will have been a social worker who was responsible.
This blog must have really angered a few people because ‘The Guardian’ is reporting yet more discoveries which will lead to cures for depression and cancer. I didn’t bother to read the articles because reports like this cannot be believed and there are several of them appearing on a daily basis at present, but I expect that the miracles have been performed at UCH or Imperial, that’s usually where it all happens. UCH/UCL and Imperial mop up such a large proportion of the UK’s research budget that they need to keep telling people that they’ve found a cure for something and it’ll be in the clinic within three years. Furthermore, Sarah-Jane Blakemore works at UCL and her dad is Colin Blakemore who is the former head of the MRC which won’t be doing Sarah-Jane and her colleagues any harm. Imperial was and is heaving with well-connected folk including Lord Robert Winston, so they can’t be seen to be slacking either.
A Top Doctor has accused the Home Office of blocking the visa applications of Indian doctors who could contribute so much to the UK NHS. Yes, some of them do and to be honest they face such a high degree of institutionalised racism from the medical establishment that I’m staggered that they continue to apply for jobs in UK hospitals. However the current havoc in the NHS cannot be explained entirely by the lack of Indian doctors or indeed the other reason that I saw given the other day – good old Brexit and its deleterious effect on job applications from Angels in Europe.
Havoc continues at Alder Hey re baby Alfie and such is the aggro that staff have now been advised to remove their ID badges when off hospital premises so people do not know that they work at that hospital. Jan Moir’s column in the ‘Mail Online’ is spitting blood at people who are challenging the notion that Top Docs and Angels ever do anything other than act in their patients’ best interests. I’ve got news for you Jan and I’ve spent many more years in medical schools, hospitals and healthcare settings than anyone who writes for the ‘Daily Mail’, except of course for Dr Max the Mind Doctor – but Dr Max does not always tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; Dr Max is quite selective when imparting his insider’s knowledge.
The fuckwittery surrounding the forthcoming nightmare of the succession to Carwyn Jones as Wales’s FM continues. The Baroness of Ely aka Eluned Morgan has stated that in the interests of diversity there needs to be a woman candidate. Who should that woman be? The Baroness of course. In the interests of the future of Wales, there really needs to be a candidate who is not a paedophiles’ friend and at present there is not.
There was of course one high profile politician who did make much of how, by dint of being female and being in possession of feminine skills like knowing the price of butter, she could do a better job than those in possession of testicles – it was a woman called Margaret Thatcher. Thatch wrecked Wales and it has not recovered. One area of Wales did do very well as a result of Thatch however – Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Bay resulted from the redevelopment of the old docklands and involved the transfer of many millions of pounds of taxpayers money into the pockets of the developers who were already rich men. The details of the scams and rigged contracts that were essential to the development of Cardiff Bay can be read in my post ‘Corruption Bay Special’.
One of the central figures involved was Nicholas Edwards, the Secretary of State for Wales who implemented the scheme in his capacity as a Cabinet Minister, then resigned and joined the Board of one of the companies who picked up the contracts – Edwards made a fortune and ended up in the Lords (see post ‘Old Nick Bites The Dust’). Eluned probably sat next to him slumbering on the benches or dined on the table opposite him in the subsidised restaurant in the Upper House.
The Councillors of South Glamorgan County Council were party to Old Nick’s scam and had they not colluded with it, it would not have happened. The Labour leader of that Council was a man called the Rev Bob Morgan. He was the Baroness’s dad. The Rev Bob and his family fared rather better than most of Wales did during the long years of Tory rule. The Baroness went to one of Wales’s most elite public schools, Atlantic College – a reader of this blog told me that the Baroness received a South Glamorgan County Council scholarship to Atlantic College. Thus the young Baroness was bussed out of Ely, where the Rev Bob was a clergyman. In Sept 1991 the residents of Ely were so pissed off that they held a riot. The Baroness’s dad gave them a bollocking for ‘shitting on their own doorsteps’. They weren’t escaping to Atlantic College and the House of Lords like the Rev Bob’s daughter, so perhaps they took a different world view.
The Rev Bob was a leading light in the south Wales Labour Party and the Baroness inherited that tendency – the Baroness joined the Labour Party shortly after she was out of nappies and blow me if she wasn’t a leading light and then an MEP before most of Wales had noticed what was happening. Then she became a Baroness, although HOW, no-one could quite fathom.
What worries me about the Baroness becoming Wales’s FM is her lack of brain and lack of honesty. I encountered the Baroness at a conference some years ago where she told everyone how successful Tony Blair’s widening participation policy was. I had written a PhD and co-authored a book on why the policy wasn’t working and everyone working in universities knew that ‘widening participation’ was unravelling. I challenged the Baroness had told her that the policy wasn’t working as Blair expected and was having a seriously deleterious effect on HE. The Baroness looked straight past me and repeated that the policy was a success. It has now been admitted – even by Lord Adonis who was substantially responsible for it – that the policy has backfired and many unexpected problems have resulted.
The Baroness then talked to the audience about the knowledge economy that would soon be bringing highly paid jobs to Wales and would need lots of young people with degrees in IT. I laughed out loud and the Baroness glared at me and continued to talk about the knowledge economy.
That conference was held about eight years ago. If the Baroness knows where in Wales the knowledge economy is hiding, perhaps she could let me know. Because what I saw in urban areas were jobs in coffee shops and nail bars and in rural Wales jobs as care assistants, support workers and cleaners/caterers during the summer months. £9/hour if you’re lucky and if you do have an IT degree, it will be ignored because it doesn’t have any relevance to those jobs.
Now if the Baroness is either too stupid or too arrogant to speak honestly to an audience of academics about HE and the knowledge economy, somehow I don’t think that the Baroness is going to be very effective at dealing with Wales’s rapidly collapsing NHS or indeed resurrecting the mental health and social services which are now well and truly broken. The Baroness is married to a GP so her silence regarding the NHS in Wales is puzzling. If you become FM Baroness, the Rev Bob’s ability to buy you a better quality of life via a scholarship or fast track you into the higher echelons of the Labour Party won’t be any help. As FM, the problems are yours to sort out and you won’t be able to do it and as your husband’s colleagues have added to the NHS’s problems by their demands for higher and higher salaries, you won’t be pointed in the right direction by them either.
Is your husband a member of the BMA Eluned? I bet that he is. The BMA were central to concealing the criminality involved in the paedophile gang in north Wales.
The Baroness’s dad knew about George Thomas molesting children – but nonetheless they assisted each other in various fund-raising enterprises – and I bet that the Baroness did as well. Of course she did, the Baroness has worked as a researcher for S4C and the BBC. Who kept schtum about the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, George Thomas and Jimmy Savile… Why didn’t you broadcast it then Eluned? I had many meetings with an S4C journo who wanted to make a documentary about events in north Wales, but she was stamped on by a higher authority and the plug was pulled on the documentary.
While the Baroness was at Atlantic College, kids in care in north Wales were raped, buggered, beaten and fitted up in court if they complained. No doubt if one of the survivors told the Baroness this, that arrogant little face with its soulless eyes would stare straight past them and spout crap about diversity.
The Baroness has Chaired the Cardiff Business Partnership and served on the Council of Atlantic College, such is her commitment to the common man.

Whilst an MEP, the Baroness was the Labour Party’s European spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Science. She was responsible for drafting the European Parliament’s response to the Energy Green Paper and also took the lead role in negotiating on behalf of the Parliament the revision of the Electricity Directive. The Baroness stood down as an MEP in 2009. Upon standing down, the Baroness took up the post of Director of SWALEC, where she was responsible for establishing the SWALEC Smart Energy Centre in Treforest. Not only does the Baroness not understand the sociology of HE or the IT industry but she obviously doesn’t know the meaning of the phrases ‘conflict of interest’ and ‘snout in the trough’ either.

As well as being a GP, the Baroness’s husband Dr Rhys Jenkins is a non-stipendary priest in the Church in Wales. So he knows that there has been a problem with the abuse of children which was concealed by the Church.
The Baroness’s family came from Pembrokeshire. Ah – can they let us know whether the incarceration in Broadmoor of June and Jennifer Gibbons from Pembrokeshire whilst they were still teenagers after they told people that they were prostitutes was anything to do with the paedophile gang which was active down there (see post ‘One Dangerous Fucker’). It’s a worthy case Eluned – the twins were black, female and had special needs, just think how many Brownie points you’ll gain by defending two people like that!
The Baroness is being supported in her ambitions to become FM by Nia Griffith, paedophiles’ friend and the Labour MP for Llanelli (see post ‘The Battle Of The Cowshed’). There is a news story today about a GP who is thought to have embezzled £400k from the NHS and fled to Cape Verde in Africa, where he shot his girlfriend and then himself. The GP is originally from Llanelli.

In The News At Present

I’m following up a few research leads for the blog at the moment, so today’s post is just a resume of a few stories that are currently in the news, with a bit of background info on some of the people involved.

This morning the ‘Today’ programme broadcast a rather weak piece concerning the issue of men in the workplace and their mental health. Of course, MIND provided someone to comment  – not the odious Paul Farmer, who has kept a low profile for a few days, but a Madeleine McGivern. Madeleine is ‘head of programmes, workplace well-being’ for MIND. I’m taking more and more of an interest in the Third sector, as are a number of other bloggers, because it has become clear that MIND are not the only charity coining it in by pretending to be representing the oppressed whilst doing anything but. There are problems across the whole of the Third sector. Madeleine has a wealth of experience in this domain, having previously worked for Christian Aid and Water Aid for some years. She does actually seem to have a lot of experience in working in the Middle East and specialised in the Middle East whilst she was at university. Her CV in that field is very impressive. So one wonders how she ended up in her present post with MIND – the only clue is that prior to her extended stint concerning the Middle East, she was a charity junky, having worked in a number of roles in the Third sector after she graduated. But there are now many people who are building extended highly paid careers on the back of charity work. Madeleine has shown a bit of nous in terms of building a network to land such roles – she co-founded something called FIND, a network which connects women with professional interests similar to hers. Despite her lack of previous stated experience in mental health, Madeleine is also a Trustee of Haringey MIND. My post ‘MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course…’ mentions that the worryingly paedophile-friendly Tony Smythe, former Chief Exec of MIND, continued to be involved with Haringey MIND long after he stepped down as Chief Exec, as did his partner Jeanne. So I took a look at the present ‘Board of volunteer Trustees’ for Haringey MIND.

There’s an awful lot of them – so either Haringey MIND is a substantial concern or they are top heavy. The Trustees are described on the MIND In Haringey website thus:

David Pascall, Chair and Acting Treasurer. David states that he has personal experience of mental illness and that he lives in Haringey. Is he a long term service user, battling with the excesses of welfare reform? Probably not. He states that he has retired from full-time executive work and is seeking non-executive chairmanships and directorships. He’s not going to be making the tea at the drop in centre then. I completely accept that executives can experience mental illness but David’s CV suggests that he wasn’t clobbered that badly – and some of his previous posts are rather inconsistent with the image that MIND likes to project. David was a senior executive with BP for 25 years. That’s the BP that was responsible for the 2010 Deep Horizon oil spill, the biggest oil spill in marine waters in history, which resulted in BP pleading guilty to eleven counts of felony manslaughter, two misdemeanours, one felony count of lying to Congress and paying more than $4.5 billion pounds in fines and penalties. David was the MD of Terra Firma, a private equity group, for eight years. (Terra Firma’s record is so bad that I have not got time to detail it all here, I recommend interested readers to just google, you’ll find pages of unscrupulous practices.) David has also held Gov’t positions and has experience of a range of non-executive chairs and directors positions.

Marcus Yorke. Marcus doesn’t claim any service user credentials himself, but he previously worked as an occupational therapist in a 57 bedded unit for young males with psychotic illness, supporting them to find work and educational opportunities. Marcus may have been doing a very useful job there – or he may have been the sort of mental health professional described in a previous post, who coerced people into work and education when they were not capable of it, resulting in them hitting disaster after a few weeks and finding themselves back in the mental health system again, although the records of Marcus will have had lot of ticks in the boxes labelled ‘recovered’. I cannot help thinking that Marcus’s previous employment will have been very attractive to MIND, as they made it clear to Gov’t some time ago that they couldn’t wait to bid for those lucrative DWP contracts forcing claimants with mental health problems off benefits into work. Marcus has organised events challenging stigma!

Gemma Coleman, Secretary. Gemma spent five months volunteering at Haringey MIND and then joined the Board. She worked for the Dept of Education in SEN and disability research. She has also worked for Rethink Mental Illness and has a Masters in Mental Health Research from UCL.

Laura Aldridge. Has personal experience of mental health issues. Laura spent a year volunteering at Haringey MIND in the admin dept. She believes that ‘mental health charities are ever more important due to the lack of Gov’t funding for mental illness’. Not only is that the Official Paul Farmer Line, but the only reason why Farmer, in his £100k pa plus post, wants an increase in Gov’t funding ‘for mental illness’ is so that it is channelled in the direction of MIND. Laura has worked in academic publishing and is a graduate of UCL.

Oran Blackwood. Oran is a mental health survivor and is training as a counsellor and SEN co-ordinator. He has ten years of experience working with SEN and mental health issues in post-16 education. Oran also volunteers with a number of other charities.

Tricia Bohn. She has worked as a GP in Hackney for more than 20 years, in a practice with a strong commitment to mental health and local voluntary organisations. Prior to working as a GP Tricia was a Youth and Community worker in Haringey and Hackney.

Glynnis Joffe. Glynnis has over thirty years experience in working in social care, initially as a social worker and then as a social services senior manager for twenty years. She has experience of working with NHS CCGs and provider Trusts offering hospital and community services, including mental health. Glynnis believes in co-production between the voluntary sector and service users!

Helen Moulinos. Helen trots out the myth that ‘1 in 4’ people suffer from mental illness. Which is not true, but it’s what MIND tells people. She has twenty plus years of international commercial experience in charity and the financial services. She has skills in business and commercial strategy and creating new business models. She is a Trustee of an East London based mental health charity – which is helping people return to the workplace! Helen is also involved in restructuring three of the UKs largest public health and social care charities.

David Mosse. David has personal experience of bereavement due to suicide. He is the Professor and Head of the Anthropology Dept at SOAS (University of London). His career has been in community based approaches to poverty reduction and human development internationally eg. Oxfam in India. He is a Trustee for an NGO working in rural India and a Governor of SOAS.

Heather Pegrum. She is a Mental Health First Aider and a volunteer support recovery worker with a background in fine art/graphic design.

Richard Popple. Richard is a trainer and facilitator for the private and public sectors including the NHS. He is also an actor and writer.

What is striking about these Trustees is what a very limited sector of society they have been drawn from. Many of them work in or manage the mental health services or arms of Gov’t which have led to so many of the problems experienced by ‘service users’. Two of them were educated at UCL which has been involved in concealing abuses in the mental health services and a number of them have spent their careers working in the Third sector. There is not going to be much divergence in thought among these Trustees – with the exception of the two who have a background in academic/international NGO work and of course the oil executive/corporate capitalist, they will all have been completely inducted into thinking about mental health problems and ways of addressing them in the way that the mental health services and MIND do. Which has not got us very far. Furthermore, most of these Trustees are in positions which makes public dissent impossible.

The Voice of the Service Users? Hardly. Some of them claim to have personal experience of mental health problems, but they all seem to have been able to build careers. That is not to dismiss their own experiences, which will be valuable – but there is an obvious absence of the voices of people with severe enduring mental illness who have experienced long-term poverty. It is those people who are being left destitute by Theresa May’s welfare reforms – welfare reforms which MIND intends to benefit from by bidding for Gov’t contracts. Something else is clear about this Board as well. Whilst I am cynical about organisations hitting ‘diversity’ targets, there is only one Trustee who is not white British. Haringey has one of the most ethnically and culturally mixed populations in the country. There is a huge Cypriot community, a huge Black community and a Jewish community. Statistics tell us that the Black community in Haringey will be over-represented among people who have been diagnosed with psychosis and treated under the Mental Health Act. Where are they on this Board? Where are older people, many of whom will be in receipt of ‘services’ (or more probably will need to be in receipt of services but won’t be getting them)? The Service Users on this Board are professional people whom I suspect have experienced the milder types of mental health problems. Which is probably why one of them is quoting the misleading 1 in 4 statistic…

Another health news item on the ‘Today’ programme was a discussion concerning the Gov’ts plans to increase the number of medical student places in UK universities – it’s a bit too little too late. It was pointed out to the Health Minister being interviewed, Phillip Dunne, that those students won’t be arriving in the medical workforce for years, yet the increase in numbers is a response to the alleged shortage of doctors now. Dunne stated that medical students make a valuable contribution to the medical workforce whilst they are training. They are certainly used as cheap labour for menial tasks, but they are also kicked about and bullied – particularly by a certain sort of Angel actually. Angels get kicked about and bullied by Top Doctors themselves which causes some of them to get the retaliation into medical students on the grounds that in a few years time their salaries will be exceeding the Angels’ pay and they’ll be putting the boot into the Angels themselves. It’s all a case of Red In Tooth And Claw in the NHS. Medical students are also completely powerless – so if they’re witnessing mad or negligent Top Doctors in action they can do nothing about it at all, even if patients are being very obviously harmed. NHS whistleblowers are nearly always sacked even when they’re paid up members of the workforce – I’ve not yet actually encountered a medical student who’s ever tried to report malpractice or misconduct, although I know plenty who have witnessed it. I do know student nurses who have been forced off their course for reporting the abuse of patients.

Phillip Dunne also emphasised that more ‘diversity’ was needed among medical students and that the Gov’t will be giving universities incentives to accept students from underprivileged backgrounds or those who want to work in rural or coastal areas or psychiatry. No doubt the Gov’t will now implement some simplistic lame initiatives which will not result in what they want to achieve. This blog has previously commented that many Top Doctors are from privileged backgrounds. Younger Top Doctors however are often not quite so privileged – they still tend to be from the middle classes, but many more of them have attended state schools. The discussions concerning diversity in medicine that I’ve encountered are missing a crucial element. A greater variation in social backgrounds would be a positive move, but the problem with the Top Doctors isn’t so much that they are drawn from the more privileged sections of society – it is that so many of them are incredibly self-interested and no-one is acknowledging this. Their self-interest and sometimes sheer naked greed is what leads them to abuse or neglect patients, to demand bigger and bigger salaries, to mistreat their colleagues and to falsify research. There is little point in increasing diversity if the system still selects for people who’ll murder their grandmother – or indeed other people’s grandmothers – to advance themselves.

‘Today’ broadcast an interview with a Top Doctor who had been working in a rural GPs practice but who had returned to the city to work in a hospital. He explained in his interview that he had found general practice rather routine and boring and wanted ‘broader experience’. He was probably too tactful to admit that he had been stuck in a surgery with a group of old farts of senior partners who had ‘done things this way’ for years and weren’t going to take on board any suggestions from a whippersnapper. Of course, the image presented to aspiring medical students – including by medical schools themselves – is that of medicine as a glamorous career which involves endless heroics and life-saving, plus a healthy dose of brain surgery. If the students have been lured in on that basis, they will feel that it’s a bit of let-down when they find themselves spending most of their time treating frail elderly people with conditions that are not going to improve. As for tempting students into psychiatry – well Phillip Dunne needs to get rid of the Dafydds, the Marie Savages and the Tony Roberts’s if psychiatry is ever to become a popular speciality.

As is my current practice, I did a bit of research on the person being interviewed by ‘Today’, Phillip Dunne. His wiki entry describes him as a ‘farmer’ and a ‘banker’. I presume that he’s not the sort of farmer who has a flock of sheep on the side of a mountain in north Wales and is reliant on the agricultural subsidies to keep him from bankruptcy. Phillip I suspect is the sort of farmer who owns a few thousand acres and who also receives agricultural subsidies – but in his case they will ensure that he remains one of the wealthiest people in the UK. (I think that Lord Newborough of Rhug Farm Estate worked in the City before he returned to north Wales and took over the ‘family farm’.) I’m not sure that either of Dunne’s previous jobs leave him in a particularly good position to take up a role as Health Minister.

I was also interested to hear the former Chancellor Alistair Darling speaking on the radio – ‘Today’ were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the banking crash. Alistair reminisced about how it took him completely by surprise, he was actually on holiday and had gone out to buy some rolls when he heard that the French banks had collapsed. He didn’t worry but he then heard that banks were collapsing across the world and he thought gosh it might happened to the British banks. It did, a few hours later. Just like that. He subsequently had a phone conversation with the head of one of the biggest UK banks who told Alistair that the bank was probably going to run out of money later that afternoon and Alistair realised that he didn’t know what to do about any of it. Alistair, who had no idea that his running of the economy was going to lead to a banking crash and then didn’t know what to do when it did, has of course been rewarded with a seat in the Lords. Harriet Harman memorably stated that if only Lehman Brothers had been Lehman Sisters none of it would ever have happened (it was a problem of gender you see, not one of global capitalism) and the rest of them blamed the general public for spending like drunken sailors, although Gordon Brown had positively encouraged everyone to do this. Liam Byrne put the icing on the cake by leaving a witty note behind telling the incoming Coalition Gov’t that there was no money left.

BBC News Wales online has reported that the Welsh Gov’t has announced that it will be dispensing with the post of the Welsh Language Commissioner, who is of course a star of this blog – Meri Huws aka the Crack of Doom (see posts ‘Let Me Enlighten Lord Gnome… and ‘Local Accessories’ for background on Meri and the way in which she was alleged to have secured the numerous jobs that she could not do). Cymdeithas yr Iaith have got very angry about this, but then Meri is their former Chair, so they would wouldn’t they. Heledd Gwyndaf from Cymdeithas stated that the Welsh Gov’ts proposals were ‘aimed at making civil servants lives easier’. Their lives certainly will be easier once Meri is out of the door, when she was given that job a senior colleague of mine at Bangor University observed that she won’t know what she is doing, but at least the civil servants will. Alun Davies the Minister for the Welsh language made some eminently sensible comments, including that promoting and protecting the Welsh language involves ‘more than slogans and chanting on an Eisteddfod field’. But as I noted previously, Meri should never have been given that position, there was outrage among language scholars and researchers when the appointment was announced because she had no credibility with any of them.

Meri gave an interview stating that ‘change for change’s sake is not acceptable’ but ‘change is acceptable if it leads to improvement’. So Meri, who has received more than £100k pa for the last five years from the Welsh Gov’t, is now dictating the circumstances under which they can kick her out. Meri has demanded ‘evidence’ that change is needed. The evidence Meri is that you made such a hash of drawing up ‘standards’ a few years ago that Leighton Andrews had to publicly comment on the cock-up and that after five years of you being in post there is every indication that Welsh is still on the back foot. Furthermore, it was recently reported that ‘Sports Direct’ in Bangor had banned staff from speaking Welsh. Did you organise a boycott of ‘Sports Direct’ or send anyone in undercover to clock how many laws they were breaking – which they will be, they are after all ‘Sports Direct’? No, you were at the Eisteddfod, giving interviews explaining why it wasn’t ‘acceptable’ for the Welsh Gov’t to sack you.

There was however a protest in Bangor yesterday by another self-appointed guardian of the Welsh language. Hywel Williams, MP for Caernarfon, was photographed standing in the rain on a pavement in Bangor holding up a small piece of paper with a ‘No To Starbucks’ printed on it. It transpires that ‘Starbucks’ are planning to open a café in Bangor. Was Hywel protesting because this American tax-dodging giant might put other cafes out of business or disrespect the Welsh language (which it probably will)? No, Hywel was protesting because he thought that the road junction on which the proposed ‘Starbucks’ is to be sited is ‘dangerous’. Not that anyone has ever been killed or injured there.

Even the ‘Times’ yesterday, the Murdoch owned, Danny Finkelstein-employing, Tory-supporting ‘Times’, published a leader supporting the right of people to speak Welsh and condemned ‘Sports Direct’ in the strongest terms. So the ‘Times’ has been more pro-active in it’s support for Welsh than the Welsh Language Commissioner. Is anymore evidence needed to justify her dismissal?

BBC News Wales recently ran a story concerning a scandal in a Council in south Wales. A number of staff were disciplined for consuming cooked breakfasts whilst they were supposed to be working. New readers may not be aware that one of my first posts when I started this blog was an account of the practices of the Arfon Community Mental Health Team. Not only did they perjure themselves in an attempt to have me imprisoned and threaten to assault clients in their own homes, but the Arfon Team achieved notoriety for their consumption of cooked breakfasts. They’d all gather in Morrison’s café in Upper Bangor at about 9-30 every morning and enjoy a fry-up, finally returning to their offices at about 11-30. ‘Service users’ who were being refused ‘help’ from this team on the grounds that they were ‘too busy’ would watch this ritual daily. It went on for years – that ‘team’ was jointly managed by Gwynedd Social Services and the North West Wales NHS Trust. Disciplinary action was never mentioned.

To finish, some news about Bangor University. The Daily Post online is taking delight in reporting that the University has once more performed brilliantly in terms of student satisfaction. Bangor has done well on this measure for years – there are a lot of staff, including admin staff, who are very committed to student welfare and love working with the students. The irony is that the man who is basking in the glory and bragging about it to the Daily Post is none other than Professor Oliver Turnbull, PVC for Teaching and Learning. Turnbull is best known for being sent on extended gardening leave a few years ago when an e mail that he wrote was leaked to ‘Private Eye’. A female psychology student had complained about being sexually harassed by a teaching assistant. Turnbull had responded by asking whether her complaint should be taken seriously or whether she should just be viewed as a poorly performing student who was seeking excuses. Turnbull accidentally cc’d the e mail to the student herself. It remains a mystery why he was ever appointed as PVC for Teaching and Learning after his suspension. One thing is certain. Bangor excelling in it’s support for students will have sod all to do with Oliver Turnbull. For more details of Oliver Turnbull and the School of Psychology that he runs, see post ‘He’s Not The Messiah, He’s A Very Naughty Boy’.

Updates On Previous Posts, Including Inquest Verdict

Nicola Jones, the Coroner at the inquest of Michael Bryn Jones (please see post ‘A Tale Of Two Inquests’) has returned a verdict of suicide. Ms Jones commented that ‘there should have been more effort to persuade Mr Jones to come into Hergest for a full assessment of his condition. He went to that Unit looking for help and he didn’t get it’ (well that’s been the experience of a lot of people for at least the last fifteen or twenty years). Ms Jones suggests that ‘more effort’ was needed – but it wasn’t that the Hergest Unit simply lacked in effort, Mr Jones was turned away when he went to the Hergest Unit asking to see a doctor. Robat Hughes, the ‘senior nurse’ who answered the door to Mr Jones, stated that he ‘regretted’ not asking Mr Jones whether he was already having treatment. Hughes said that Mr Jones had asked for a doctor, but Hughes told him that the doctor had gone home sick but if he went to A&E there would be doctors there. So that was the ‘help’ that Mr Jones received. Is Robat Hughes really so thick that he didn’t twig that someone turning up at the Hergest Unit in the middle of the night asking to see a doctor might have been feeling very rough indeed? The Hergest Unit have now managed to kill so many patients by refusing to help them when they turn up at the Unit that one would have thought that, in the words of Peter Higson and Margaret Hanson, the ‘learning’ would be ’embedded’ by now. Patient turns up at night asking to see doctor followed by patient being turned away leads to patient later being found dead. It’s not rocket science. But the idiocy continues – the ‘incident’ ie. NEEDLESS DEATH was ‘reviewed’ by ‘consultant psychiatrist Dr Stuart Porter’, who concluded that somebody should have taken Mr Jones to A&E and that it is good practice to follow up with a phone call. Porter hasn’t mentioned the other numerous worrying aspects of this case – that Mr Jones was well-known to the Unit, that he’d tried to kill himself five times, that his family had only weeks earlier ‘begged’ for him to remain an inpatient when he was discharged, that the family stated that they weren’t listened to and that a care plan that they maintained wouldn’t work remained in place. But Porter doesn’t seemed to have commented on all this. Lest anyone think that Stuart Porter is some sort of ‘independent expert’, let me enlighten you. Porter is a psychiatrist who also works for the  Betsi, at the Ablett Unit. The Ablett Unit that kicked a patient out, homeless and with no aftercare, on the grounds that he was ‘faking mental illness’ in order to secure accommodation and who was said by a nurse to have been a ‘foreign type’ ‘speaking gibberish’ (he was speaking in Bulgarian) who later beheaded someone because he was actually completely psychotic (please see post ‘Homicide Committed By Patient At Ablett Unit’); the Ablett where care of the elderly mentally ill on Tawel Fan ward was so bad that it was described as the worst mental health care scandal that the country had seen, resulted in the Betsi being put into special measures and is the subject of two ongoing external inquiries (please see previous posts concerning Tawel Fan). This is not the first time that Stuart Porter has been used to paper over the very big cracks in the ‘care’ provided by the Hergest Unit – both Porter and Dr David Crossley are regularly wheeled out by the Betsi to do this and they both manage to usually agree that whatever crazy diagnosis and shite care has been dished out by the Hergest, it is quite appropriate. I know of a someone who for twenty years endured the usual neglect and abuse from the Hergest Unit and as many of us have, also managed to acquire multiple different diagnoses from them – after he had made a formal complaint, the usual strategy of announcing that he had an untreatable ‘borderline personality disorder’ was employed. After begging to be transferred to a unit away from the lethal Hergest, he finally wound up at the Ablett, in the ‘care’ of Stuart Porter. It was every bit as bad as Hergest, both in terms of the facilities and the ‘care’. Furthermore Porter consulted with the psychiatrists at Hergest who had been the subject of the complaint and read all their ‘records’ (much of which were factually inaccurate) before seeing my friend. He then told my friend that he had a borderline personality disorder. However at the same time, he did give my friend the Beck Depression Inventory to complete – my friend fulfilled the criteria for serious clinical depression. Porter then said that the Beck Inventory was irrelevant. So why did Porter give it to him? As well as Porter, my friend had one meeting with Porter’s colleague, a CPN. This CPN altered the date of the meeting by e mail, then denied doing so – even though my friend then produced the e mail. When the CPN finally did manage to get it together to meet my friend, during the course of the conversation my friend mentioned that when he was at university he often used to like going barefoot (this was in the late 60s where students going barefoot was almost de rigour in some circles). On the basis of this and this alone would you believe, the CPN diagnosed my friend with a ‘narcissistic personality disorder’. My friend pointed out to Porter that this was inconsistent with the previous diagnosis and Porter’s response was that my friend had a narcissistic personality disorder ‘as well’. So my friend was suffering from: bipolar disorder, PTSD, borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. All at once. But not depression, although the only appropriate diagnostic tool that had ever been employed in his case showed him to be severely depressed. But one Dr Marie Savage previously of the Hergest Unit – and at present I understand of the Ablett Unit – surpassed all others. She wrote on my friend’s medical records that he ‘has always wanted to be a woman’. How Savage managed to conclude this as she penetrated the mysteries of my friend’s psyche he did not know – and he didn’t realise that she’d even written this until his lawyer obtained his medical records after years of him being pissed about by that gang of fools. But my friend did have long hair and he sometimes wore pink climbing trousers, so it was probably based on that. I can only wonder if Marie Savage was the person who started off that notorious allegation that the Teletubby who used to have the handbag was gay. My friend observed that as well as sporting a pair of ‘wanker’s glasses’, Stuart Porter’s highly stylised attempt at playing the role of a psychiatrist ‘was so bad that it wouldn’t have landed him a part in one of Linda Snell’s pantomimes’.

Anyway Porter ‘reviewed the incident’ and the Betsi have now ‘changed their procedures’, offered their ‘sincere condolences’ to Mr Jones’s family and ‘fully accepted’ the findings of the Coroner. So we’ll wait for the next catastrophe at the Hergest and another review by the man sporting a pair of wanker’s glasses whose only observation after the Hergest Unit sends the next suicidal person off into the night to their death will no doubt be that everything was basically OK, but perhaps they could have made a follow up phone call. By the way after his encounter with Porter and his glasses, my friend gave up with north Wales psychiatry and went abroad for the care that he needed.

My blog post ‘He’s Not The Messiah, He’s A Very Naughty Boy’ detailed the research fraud, plagiarism and other dodgy dealings of the late Professor Fergus Lowe, of Bangor University’s School of Psychology. Fungus’s claim to fame was the ‘Food Dudes’ programme, designed to promote healthy eating in children (Fungus himself lived on a diet of coke and crisps). So great was the success of Food Dudes that Fungus established a company, Food Dudes Health Ltd. I have just read on BBC News Wales that it has gone into liquidation with debts of £1.2 million, and that the creditors include a number of public health bodies and councils in England, who are owed more than £800,000. Is this the beginning of the end of the Myth that is the School of Psychology? I think that the practices of that ‘world leading School’ would be revealed in all their horror if anyone bothered to take a long hard look at the development of the phenomenon that is ‘Mindfulness’ as developed by Professor Mark Williams – readers may begin this process by reading my post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’. One can only marvel that an academic empire was built on foundations as rotten as this – and Plaid are so impressed with both this and the dear old Hergest Unit that they think it’s worth developing into a medical school…

He’s Not The Messiah – He’s A Very Naughty Boy

There is often a perception among laypeople that ‘studying psychology’ gives one great insight into the human condition. However I have been impressed with the number of dysfunctional people that I have encountered, one in particular, who have studied psychology and participated in impressive quantities of wrongdoing. The man that I’m thinking of is the late Professor Fergus Lowe, the former Senior PVC and Head of the School of Psychology at Bangor University.

Fergus Lowe died not so long ago and was well-known to many people who have passed through Bangor University in the last three decades on the grounds of being, as memorably described by my friend Brown, ‘a highly effective shit’. I know that I had prior warning from Brown regarding Lowe, but even so I was interested to watch a lot of people toady to Fergus and do his bidding no matter how unsavoury that was. A lot of people were doing this simply because they were terrified of him – for some reason best known to himself, at one point Fergus decided to cultivate the company of one of the lecturers in the psychology dept whose teenage son knew someone whom I used to be friendly with. The teenager told my friend that Fergus had started calling in uninvited at their house and that his father was too frightened to stop these visits because he was both ‘in awe of’ and ‘frightened of’ Fergus, whom this man believed was a ‘true psychopath’. I didn’t start observing Fergus and the dynamics that surrounded him until about 2003, by which time he had achieved a very senior position in the University. The official narrative regarding the ‘respect’ that there was for Fergus in some quarters was his success in turning the psychology dept in Bangor from a semi-derelict house (which was how I remembered it in the 1980s when I was a student) to what was allegedly one of the best psychology depts in the UK and even considered to be pretty good in the global rankings. In more recent times, the psychology dept has become known as one of the depts in Bangor packed with international ‘research stars’, many of them having been head-hunted by Fergus in his attempt at world-domination. This always impresses people, but there is a reason why it tends to be overseas academics in Bangor psychology rather than big names from the UK – UK psychologists knew Fergus and would not work with him. A big name in the British Psychological Association whom Brown knew was approached by Bangor in about 2005 in an attempt to head-hunt him and this man told Brown that he would never go to Bangor as long as Fergus was involved with the University. Brown’s contacts also enlightened me as to the source of one of Fergus’s big ‘successes’ that financed the grand building currently housing Bangor’s psychology dept, the Brigantia Building – namely an enormous amount of funding from Unilever some years ago. Fergus did not land this grant through his talents and hard-work. He landed that grant by systematically stuffing over everyone else who was on the team, approaching the funders and making fallacious allegations about his colleagues’ incompetence or misconduct. He was so successful in this regard that he ended up netting the grant himself.

I heard many first-hand accounts of Fergus’s wrongdoing and it seemed quite wide-ranging. There were constant allegations of dishonesty, plagiarism and research fraud. One person friendly with someone I know well told me how his friend withdrew from a PhD in the school of psychology when Fergus told her to fabricate research results. She tried to refuse and Fergus’s response was ‘the trouble with you is that you always want to tell the truth’. She withdrew from her PhD and now freely tells everyone that academics are ‘liars and cheats’ – a consequence of having Fergus Lowe as a PhD supervisor. There was an event involving Fergus that has gone down in the history of Bangor, an event remembered by a lot of women in the area who are now in early middle-age and whose children used to attend the University nursery. That nursery was used by Fergus for research purposes and it was actually where he carried out the research – if indeed he did carry out the research that he claimed, one can never be sure, it was Fergus after all – that made him famous, the ‘Food Dudes’ project, an initiative aimed at promoting healthy eating in children. Ironically at the time when Fergus was receiving glowing tributes for this work in the media and he was giving interviews about the importance of healthy eating, whilst Governments were using that research as a basis for health policy, I used to watch Fergus pop down to Morrisons in Bangor to buy his lunch – a bottle of coke and two packs of crisps. Every day without fail. However it wasn’t Fergus’s own taste for junk food that landed him in trouble with the mothers of Bangor. It was the fact that somehow they had discovered that their children were being ‘experimented on’ without their knowledge let alone their permission. The kids had all been entered into clinical trials without parental consent – trials which involved some kids being fed a bad diet, whilst others received the nice healthy fruit as promoted by Food Dudes. The middle class mums of Bangor hit the roof when they found out that their kids might have been the ones being fed crap at the nursery and in an attempt to defuse the outrage and rumours rocketing around the area, the parents were invited to a meeting with Fergus in the University Council Chamber, where he was supposedly going to reassure them that nothing untoward had happened. I know three parents – two mums and a dad – who actually attended that meeting and they said that there was uproar. The dad said that when he challenged Fergus, Fergus became so aggressive that he thought that he was going to hit him. What is so entertaining though, is that as one of the mums said ‘Fergus forgot that there is nothing like an angry mother’ and I was told that this was one occasion on which Fergus ended up literally fleeing from the room faced with a gang of furious women…

It was not only Fergus’s research that was dodgy, his teaching practices weren’t much better. In order to attract ‘world-class’ researchers to Bangor, Fergus struck very favourable deals with them, which included them having to do very little teaching to enable them to just get on with their research, which would of course be the factor that pushed Bangor psychology up the league tables. But at the same time, Fergus knew how profitable undergrads were and was determined to pack them in. So hundreds of students would be enrolled every year. From what I saw there were two groups of psychology students at Bangor. There were very bright ones who wanted careers in psychology and who had gone to Bangor because they knew that it was a highly ranked dept. Then there were a number of rather fragile troubled students who had often experienced the glorious mental health services and were now ’empowered’ to go to university. They were choosing psychology because they believed that this would enable them to ‘understand myself’, confusing it with psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. They were positively encouraged to do this by the mental health services, because they were then categorised in a box ticked ‘recovered’. No-one told them that the psychology degree at Bangor was nothing to do with psychotherapy/psychoanalysis – Bangor has a huge emphasis on behavioural psychology and the course also involved topics such as biochemistry and of course statistics. (At one point Bangor was scandalised because the statistics module in the psychology dept was being taught by a man who was of the ‘hippy’ community in Bethesda who had a very obvious drug habit and was regularly seen cultivating the company of girls below the age of consent, herding them into taxis and then disappearing with them. There was very great concern expressed by a lot of people that the University saw fit to employ this man – I was told that Fergus was quite happy to do so because he paid him a pittance. The scandal only came to an end when the ‘stats lecturer’ turned up to work after having taken LSD and started playing Jimi Hendrix to the students on the grounds that if they listened closely they’d understand stats in an instant. This was too much even for Fergus and the stats lecturer was employed no more.) The fragile students with mental health problems or no previous qualifications used to encounter great difficulties and would usually withdraw at the end of the first year having found themselves completely unable to cope academically and would often end up feeling very bad about themselves. Fergus knew that this was happening but didn’t mind at all – he’d netted a years worth of fees from them. Furthermore, I got the impression that there wasn’t much time in the psychology dept for students who might be struggling – at one point I discovered that a two tier system was in operation in that dept, which involved a select few of the very high achieving students being identified and approached in their second year and asked to join an elite group, who would then enjoy extra tuition etc. Which was great if you were part of that group, but what about the others – they were paying the same fees and they weren’t told in advance about this two tier system. However, even the very academic students often became disillusioned with the psychology dept. Because Fergus was expecting so little in the way of teaching from the Big Names, the students were taught by postgrads. This is of course a common practice, but usually this is done partly to enable the postgrads to gain lecturing experience. Fergus however rolled out this system en masse – hundreds of undergrads would be packed into the biggest hall in the university, with a postgrad virtually wetting themselves with anxiety on the stage in front of them, trying to give a lecture when they were insufficiently experienced. This happened so frequently that the students who had gone to Bangor to work with famous people would realise at the end of three years that they’d barely met any of these famous people. There is however one high profile academic in the school of psychology who does seem to take an interest in students and whom the students all loved, that is Professor Guilluame Thierry. I have heard fantastic things about him – but he is the only well-known person in psychology whom I hear the students praising.

But Fergus was running yet another scam among all this. Most postgrads like to do a bit of teaching because it enables them to supplement their PhD studentships. However I was told that Fergus was grossly underpaying them. One brave soul decided to challenge him about this and I think that she also tried to encourage everyone to join a union as well. No-one would back her up – they were far too frightened – so she went to see Fergus to confront him about the exploitation that was happening. She told me an extraordinary tale – that as he saw her approaching his office, Fergus marched out of his room screaming and swearing at her, grabbed her by the hair and tried to drag her down the corridor. I asked her if there were witnesses to this and she told me that people were coming out of their offices to see what the racket was about but when they saw what was going on, every single one of them retreated back into their office and shut the door. The same person also told me of another Fergus-related outrage. She had been invited to a conference in Chester as part of the psychology team with Fergus. She went out for the evening in Chester and had a really bad experience – a man attempted to rape her. She fought him off and managed to get back to the conference venue where she encountered Fergus. She was very shaken and told him what had happened. He commented that she was obviously alright now and went off elsewhere with the others leaving her alone for the next few hours. Attempted rape of one of the researchers? Fergus didn’t bat an eye-lid. Interestingly enough, although this person was a good researcher and remained in the school of psychology to pursue further work after her PhD, she was never promoted. Even more interestingly, I discovered that she was actually writing the publications of some of the professors in the psychology dept only to find that they were taking her name off the work when they submitted it for publication. So that’s how the senior staff in the psychology dept built up such impressive publication lists…

Although I knew that Fergus did this sort of thing and encouraged other people to conduct themselves like this as well, I always wondered how he’d got such a foothold in the University initially. About ten years ago I found out. During Thatcher’s administration there had been one round of university funding cuts that were particularly savage and had almost destroyed certain universities like Aston and Salford. Another university that had come under attack – although I don’t know why – was Bangor. There was a fear that the University was actually going to be closed down, but in the end it just suffered the closure of a number of depts, including philosophy, drama and maths. Psychology was also earmarked for closure and at that time Fergus was an unknown junior lecturer there. When he realised that the dept was about to be closed down, Fergus hit on a stroke of genius – he arranged a conference at Bangor and invited B.F. Skinner, the famous American behaviourist, to the conference. He then told Skinner that the dept was earmarked for closure and generated an enormous amount of publicity. Behaviourism was becoming very unfashionable by then, so Skinner was delighted to find another behaviourist – Fergus – and campaigned with him to prevent the closure of the dept. A number of people were very grateful to Fergus for this, because he saved their careers, as well as his own, and they have remained loyal to him ever since, although they know exactly how great the wrongdoing has been.

So whose  bacon did Fergus save? Well where mustn’t much to the Bangor psychology dept in those days, but there was a dyslexia unit – which was actually very good but which Fergus wasn’t involved with – and there were a few PhD students. But there was also a clinical psychology course. That course was training the students who were being sent on placement to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh – and they were witnessing what was going on out there. One of those students told me in the late 80s that if you were any good, you just finished your training, left north Wales and got as far away from Dafydd Alun Jones and Denbigh as possible. But there were some people who didn’t do that – and some of these deeply compromised people are hiding around north Wales at the moment.

I had been told back in the late 1980s that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones was wielding influence in the psychology dept in Bangor and had attempted to embezzle thousands of pounds from the University to pay for his daughter, Dwynwen, to attend a private college in England. I was told that Dwynwen had failed to get onto the clinical psychology course, so Dafydd was sending her to England privately but decided that someone else could pay for it. I was told that someone in Bangor University had stopped Dafydd doing this and that this was actually the end of Dafydd’s influence in the University. What I didn’t know was that this person was Fergus Lowe. Dwynwen was doing a PhD in the psychology dept at the time and it was widely alleged that she had only been given the place because of Dafydd’s influence – I was told that her finals results would never have been good enough for her to be accepted for a PhD but as is his usual practice, Dafydd worked a fiddle. Fergus was seething and is remembered for refusing to speak to Dwynwen whilst she was a postgrad there. So a lot of people were very grateful when Fergus slayed Dafydd, particularly the person whose salary Dafydd tried to steal to fund Dywnwen’s education. But that person’s salary was actually earmarked to fund a job for her at Denbigh – this person wanted to do clinical psychology and the training involved an obligatory stint as an assistant in a psychiatric hospital. That person did indeed take up the job at Denbigh – and was appalled at what she witnessed. She decided not to do clinical psychology after all – I suspect because of what she witnessed at Denbigh – but stayed in Bangor to do a PhD in the psychology dept. She still works in Bangor University today. I got to know this person very well a few years ago because I worked with her. Whilst I worked with her I was being threatened, harassed and arrested by Martin Jones and Elfed Roberts et al at the North West Wales NHS Trust. This person knew all the details and indeed read the threatening letters that Martin was sending me. At one point she observed of Martin that ‘he’s not going to stop this is he’. After hearing about one of the (many) attempts to imprison me she commented that ‘you wouldn’t have survived a prison sentence and you weren’t supposed to’. And after Martin tried to have me arrested for making a ‘hoax call’ when I was ringing Ysbyty Gwynedd A&E seeking medical advice, she responded ‘that was done to try and make you look like a fuckwit so no-one would ever believe a word that you say again’. This person also knew how corrupt the local psychiatrists were – when I told her that Dr Richard Tranter of the Hergest Unit had documented upon my medical records that I was being bullied at work by the University rather than documenting that my health was suffering because Martin Jones and Elfed Roberts were having me arrested constantly, she was good enough to describe the allegations of me being bullied at work as ‘bollocks and Richard knows that’.

So there is someone else as well as me who witnessed the abuses that took place at Denbigh, who knows about Dafydd, who knows about the wrongdoing of Fergus Lowe although he saved her salary from the ever-hungry jaws of Dafydd and who knows the lengths that Martin Jones, Richard Tranter and Elfed Roberts were going to in order to try and discredit me and conceal the abuses at the Hergest Unit. This person also knows the reality behind Professor Mark Williams and the miracle that is mindfulness and along with Fergus Lowe held mindfulness in utter contempt, but knew that it was making Mark Williams and Bangor University famous as well as a lot of money. Indeed Mark Williams was this person’s manager at one point. This person also knew about the various local abusive psychiatrists such as Laurence Chesterman and Marie Savage being involved with the psychology dept and pretending to be following ‘research interests’ when they clearly weren’t. Furthermore, this someone also knew that a nurse who had done a PhD in Bangor’s psychology dept was being falsely presented at Ysbyty Gwynedd as a ‘clinical psychologist’ and was carrying out ‘assessments’ that only clinical psychologists are permitted to do. There was one thing that this person did know that I didn’t however – on one occasion after we had finished discussing the activities of the dreadful Dafydd, I mentioned dear old Dr Peter Higson, the current Chair of the Betsi, former clinical psychologist at Denbigh, lecturer at Bangor psychology dept and currently member of Bangor University Council. This person told me that Higson was a big mate of Fergus’s and ‘he didn’t shag the patients but he did shag the students’. As readers may have gathered I knew this person very well and I was quite upfront with her that I was writing to the Welsh Gov’t about the things that had happened to me at the hands of the mental health services and that one day I intended to publish the whole story. What I didn’t realise at the time was that this person was gathering as much info as she could from me and I suspect was informing those we know and love of my every move – because unbeknown to me she was co-authoring a book with Richard Tranter and was also busy doing deals with psychiatrists such as Rob Poole to establish the Centre for Mental Health and Society at Bangor University. When she heard that the dreadful Raj Sambhi had imprisoned me at the Heddfan Unit no doubt she thought that I was finished and no threat to any of them anymore.

So who is this totally unscrupulous person who is now working with people whom she knows concealed the sexual abuse and illegal detention of patients, who knew about the scams that passed for ‘research’ in the psychology dept and who knew that Martin Jones and Elfed Roberts were doing their best to frame me in an attempt to imprison me but nevertheless co-authored a book with the man who was writing lies on my medical records in an attempt to cover their tracks? Step forward Professor Catherine Robinson, who sadly it would seem did pretty much anything to get herself a Chair at Bangor University. The irony is that when Catherine was awarded that Chair I sent her an e mail congratulating her and saying that I was glad to see someone getting a Chair without behaving like a shit. Little did I know….I always wondered why she never replied to that e mail. Oh well, the good thing about not having a job in a university Catherine is that you can publish whatever you want and you don’t have to kowtow to er, criminals.

Sadly I believe that Catherine and her ilk are the legacy of Fergus. A psychologist who has now retired from Bangor University observed that Fergus did indeed stamp out the influence of the dreadful Dafydd from Bangor University, but he just replaced it with his own toxicity. A generation of academics were not mentored properly and were led to believe that the only way to advance yourself was by bullying, cheating, deception and by keeping absolutely silent even when you know that terrible things are happening. Someone used the phrase ‘dangerous deference’ to me the other day – I think it’s an affliction affecting many in north Wales (and the NHS generally). Fergus is now dead – although no-one seems to know what he actually died of, who knows another psychopathic psychologist might have killed him – but the effects of him live on. After Fergus was made Senior PVC, there was a big problem because no one else from the psychology dept wanted to step into his place as Head of Dept, because they knew that he’d be constantly on their back. Eventually the post was filled by one Professor Oliver Turnbull. I know of two incidents involving Turnbull. One involved him attempting to coerce an artist from Bethesda into selling one of her artworks priced at £10,000 to him for £800. He tried this because he’d noticed that she was participating in the trials run by the psychology dept in order to supplement her income, so he struck up a conversation with her in order to assess just how poor she was. When he realised that she was struggling for money, he offered her a pittance for the painting that he was after. She refused and was surprised to be told by Turnbull that ‘you’ve got to sell it to me because you’ve got no money so you’ve got no choice’. She had no money but she did have principles so she walked away. The other incident involved Turnbull and the Bangor psychology dept appearing in Private Eye a few years ago. A student in the psychology dept at Bangor had complained of being sexually harassed by one of her teachers. Turnbull had written a rather inappropriate e mail, questioning whether this student really had been harassed or whether she was just a weak student and should they therefore remove her from the course. Unfortunately for Turnbull, he cc’d the e mail to a number of people including the student herself by mistake. Someone took the e mail to Private Eye and Turnbull disappeared on gardening leave for a few months. However he reappeared eventually – and I understand that he is now PVC for Teaching and Learning at Bangor no less.

Yesterday’s Betsi Board Meeting – March 17 2017

As promised (please see blog post ‘A Truly Splendid Letter From The CEO And The Chairman Of The Betsi’) I attended yesterday’s meeting of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, despite Gary the CEO and Peter the Chair’s silly letter objecting to the way in which I report these meetings on my blog. So here’s the latest review of at least part of the meeting – as usual I couldn’t bear any more than about two hours worth of these wallies, so I left just before noon. I understand that the meeting continued for sometime after this, so apologies to the Betsi Board if they suddenly geared up immediately after I left and presented detailed plans as to how they were going to extract themselves from the millions pounds worth of debt that they are currently in and prevent the ongoing slaughter of vulnerable people.

I was interested to see that Martin Jones (Director of Workforce and Operational Development) was present at the meeting, I have been missing Martin because he hasn’t appeared in public for a while. I’m glad that he’s back though, presumably someone suggested that he ought to be at least pretending to be making an effort in return for his protected salary of approx. £130,000 pa. Jo Rycroft-Malone (the Board’s Bangor University Rep) has also reappeared after last month’s absence and was having a cosy girly chat with Lyn Meadows (Independent Board Member). These two are prone to this, at a previous meeting Jo was standing protectively behind the dreadful Lyn, stroking her arms. I hate to think what is being cooked up between the two of them – Meadows was previously employed as HR Director at Bangor University and was memorably described to me by one person who had been on the receiving end of her as an ‘evil bitch’. Which was certainly interesting because exactly the same phrase was used to describe her by a member of staff at the Welsh Ambulance Service when Meadows was employed as a manager there. The phrase ‘evil bitch’ is obviously one that springs to mind after meeting Lyn. Rycroft-Malone is the former Head of the School of Healthcare Sciences at Bangor University and is now Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research there – Jo has in the past of course found herself in receipt of research funds from the Betsi as detailed previously on this blog. I’ve never heard anyone describe her as an ‘evil bitch’ per se, but I did hear allegations of serious bullying of students, racism and plagiarism levelled against her. I also had sight of a document that indicated that Jo had done some very interesting things with a research budget after a researcher walked out of a project before it had ended. Presumably by the time of the next Board meeting, Jo and Lyn will have progressed on to a ‘group hug’ in the carefully stage-managed manner of Leanne Wood, Nicola Sturgeon and Natalie Bennet during the last general election campaign. Women do things differently!

The meeting was late starting because there seemed to be a certain amount of disarray in the room, but eventually Jo and Lyn managed to prise themselves away from each other, everyone took their seats and Peter Higson (Chairman) began with a Piece of Good News. The Betsi has won an award! (Of course the Betsi announced that it had won another award earlier this week, but that turned out not to be all it seemed – please see blog post ‘How Did These Two Events Ever Happen?’). Anyway, the Betsi has been named in the Stonewall Top 100 Organisations for the ‘inclusion of diverse people’. Now I’m not sure how the Betsi has managed to achieve this. I know for a fact that Dr Alberto Salmoiraghi, the one good psychiatrist that they have at the Betsi, has been subjected to racism from ‘colleagues’ because he dares to be Italian. I know of one student nurse from Rycroft-Malone’s School of Healthcare Sciences at Bangor University, whilst Rycroft-Malone was Head of School, who was subjected to vicious work-place bullying during his time on placement at the Hergest Unit because he was gay. And I also know of two overseas medical professionals who went to work on projects in Rycroft-Malone’s School, again whilst she was Head, who were both subjected to naked bigotry. One man was so unpopular among his ‘colleagues’ there – on the grounds that he ‘stank’ and ‘couldn’t speak English properly’ – that there was an arrangement to prevent him gaining access to the building by failing to give him the new code to the door-lock. I was told by a witness to all this that the person who dreamt up this particular solution to the problems that Johnny Foreigner was causing was one Jo Rycroft-Malone. I also heard at first-hand from a lady from Kazakhstan who had the misfortune to work there that every time she told someone where she was from, people would start laughing and say ‘ooh like Borat’. She asked me what they meant – I didn’t actually tell her that those particular ignoramuses being ‘managed’ by Jo were referring to an offensive racist parody of someone from Kazakhstan by a British comedian. I can reveal the experiences of these people now because they have waved good-bye to the School of Healthcare Sciences and were probably very glad to have done so.

So the Betsi is now a Diversity Champion. To celebrate this ‘award’, all the Board members were presented with ‘rainbow lanyards’ to hang around their necks. Some of them did so but not everyone entered into the spirit of things and a lot of the lanyards were simply dumped upon the desks in front of them. So someone – presumably at Stonewall – wasted time and money manufacturing those lanyards and distributing them to the Racist In Chief and her colleagues on the Board. Nevertheless, Higson was delighted with this achievement and led the Board in a round of applause for themselves. (Whilst Higson was doing this, the Daily Post was reporting on two more Betsi-related deaths – please see blog post ‘Two More Deaths, March 16 2017’.)

Higson then welcomed everyone to the meeting and by means of introduction to the first topic said ‘we go straight into special measures’. Which must have been some sort of Freudian slip, because within a few months of Higson ‘taking control’ at the Betsi, they did indeed go straight into special measures. So they started discussing various aspects of special measures, which weren’t explained to the uninitiated observing members of the public like me, but as far as I could work out Gary the CEO had started a conversation regarding ‘Phase 2 milestones’. I presume that this is a reference to the ‘achievements’ that the Welsh Govt wants to see. Margaret Hanson (Vice-Chair) explained that they were still waiting for ‘formal feedback’ and regarding the ‘journey’ of the Betsi Board to come out of special measures, ‘progress was still being made’, although Margaret stated that they were at a ‘little bit of a loss’ as to their ‘progress’. Margaret I think that rather than being at a little bit of a loss, you are all completely clueless – one only has to read the local media to get some idea of the stream of avoidable deaths, scandals and general cock-ups happening in your organisation on a near daily basis to realise that.

Bethan Russell Williams (Independent Board Member, although deeply compromised because she’s married to the Chair of Gwynedd Community Health Council and manages a Third Sector organisation that receives funding from the Betsi), mentioned that there was ‘evidence of great progress’ in the maternity services. (The maternity services at the Betsi were so dysfunctional that part of the mentoring to which they have been subjected was categorised as achieving ‘normality’.) But Margaret had a word of warning – that they must not ‘mark their own homework’. The NHS in north Wales have of course been marking their own homework for years, that is how they ended up in this mess. Complaints were concealed, both by the Trusts that preceded the Betsi and by Higson during the years that he was CEO of Health Inspectorate Wales (HIW). They cooked the books, fiddled the stats and the whole lot of them claimed to be providing ‘excellence’. The reality was that north Wales had dreadful mortality figures and some of the poorest health outcomes in the UK. I suspect that despite Margaret’s warning, they are still marking their own homework – I noted that the fantastic ‘progress’ reported in the press recently regarding Fali Ward was simply an opinion proffered by the Betsi itself, there was no reference to an external assessment (please see blog post ‘Exactly How Bad Was Fali Ward?’).

The Rebel Member, Phil Edwards,  stated that they didn’t just need a verbal update on special measures, ‘we need evidence on paper’. (I’ve got plenty of evidence on paper Phil – evidence of thirty years of criminal activity and wrongdoing…)

Gary the CEO referred to special measures as being a ‘big question’, mentioning the ‘very wide-ranging areas’ that are under scrutiny. (Just about all activities of the Board as far as I can see.) He has noticed that with regard to the mental health services ‘we have a lot of work to get done…we are making good progress…our special measures challenge is the trust and confidence of many people’. Well there are suicides and suspicious deaths as well as a scandal most weeks, so I don’t think Betsi is quite there yet where the ‘trust and confidence of many people’ is concerned.

At this point Higson asked the Board for any declarations of interest. There were none, as usual – although this Board is packed with people who seem to have numerous conflicts of interest (please see blog post ‘Conflicts Of Interest – And Some Very Big Salaries’). The Board then started going through the minutes of the previous meeting.

Marian Wyn Jones (Independent Board Member) drew attention to the Finance Committee receiving approval for the business plan to develop the A&E Dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Marian claimed that this will be a ‘great boost’ to the economy in north west Wales. I’m not sure how that works actually – that hospital in a way is sucking the life out of north west Wales. It is receiving huge amounts of Welsh Gov’t money whilst offering a dreadful service. The local politicians dare not say a word about the appalling ‘care’ and malpractice because it is a major employer and one of the few places in Gwynedd that provides well-paid long-term jobs. The staff there really don’t want to join the ranks of most of the rest of the folk in Gwynedd, on incomes made up of low-paid work and benefits, so they lobby furiously to make damn sure that Hywel Williams MP and Sian Gwenllian AM toe the line. It is a rather unhealthy symbiotic relationship. Gary complained about the layout of the A&E Dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd and said that ‘the quality of the building is not what you would want’. Actually Gary, the quality of the staff is not what you would want – please read blog post ‘Two Dangerous Very Dishonest Nurses’ for an account of the conduct of staff at the A&E Dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd. I am not the only person who has had such experiences. Gary did however observe that it was ‘great’ that this bunch of liars and thugs who abuse their patients are going to be given a new building in which to do so.

Bobby Feely (Independent Board Member) drew attention to the shortcomings in the mandatory training in infection control at the Betsi – she was worried ‘about our standing in Wales’. This does rather smack of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, their standing in Wales could not be lower. Marian commented that the level of mandatory training in infection control was ‘down from last year’. Of course the hospitals in north Wales have a long tradition of being rife with infection but not actually telling anyone lest it affects their ‘reputation’. Or indeed their standing in Wales. Please see blog post ‘The Tip Of Yet Another Iceberg?’ for further details of the state of hygiene in units run by the Betsi and some of their rather novel ideas to remedy the problem. Margaret mentioned that they’ll be ‘keeping the pressure on’ regarding training an infection prevention. We’ll expect some more bad news media stories soon then.

Margaret then moved on to a topic central to this blog – matters relating to the mental health services. She stated that assurances had been provided to the Board’s Mental Health Act Committee that there have been improvements in the assessment of young people, ‘but we’re not there yet’. Margaret finds herself making this statement at most Board meetings. However they are ‘in a much better place’ and their duties under the Mental Health Act are being fulfilled. I’d carry out an intensive search of the Heddfan Unit if I were you Margaret, perish the thought that there might be someone in there who has been sectioned for months by Raj Sambhi because they have complained that there is neglect and abuse in the mental health services and that a paedophile ring used to operate in the region…Margaret mentioned that there is a shortage of Section 12 doctors and that they need to look at why that is. I’ll tell you why it is Margaret. It is because for years senior posts in the north Wales mental health services have been log-jammed by the likes of Dafydd Alun Jones, Marie Savage, Tony Roberts, Raj Sambhi et al and no-one wants to work with these vicious, corrupt, dysfunctional people who are exterminating their patients. Indeed, the one good psychiatrist that you have got has been given a really bad time by them – and other psychiatrists who have unsuspectingly taken up posts here have walked away after a matter of weeks, horrified by what they have discovered happening. Margaret mentioned the possibility of ‘getting more GPs on board’ – she’ll find the same problem. The good GPs will not work with that shower – I knew of a number of GPs in Gwynedd who loathed David Healy and Tony Roberts, because Healy and Roberts were just so unhelpful when those GPs tried to refer patients to them. The GPs viewed Roberts and Healy as frankly negligent. And just to chuck a further spanner in the works, Healy and his protégé Richard Tranter – who left for New Zealand in a hurry when people started discovering what he was up to – were busy on Healy’s blog blaming the dysfunction, chaos and cruelty in the mental health services on everyone but themselves, advising other people not to work at the Betsi. I can heartily recommend any patients who have experienced the insanity of the Hergest Unit to read the piece on Healy’s blog entitled ‘Richard’s Story’, it’s a real tear-jerker. The tale of a Hergest Unit that attracted Nobel prize winners no less (yes, honestly, that is one of the claims made), that provided excellent care for patients, that was an innovative unit providing the best care in the UK until that wicked witch Mary Burrows came along – except that it’s all a pack of lies, about as honest as the ‘research’ that was being carried out by those we know and love in the mental health services.

The Board then held a long discussion about Wales’s ‘Wellbeing of Future Generations Act’. This Act is providing a very useful smokescreen for the state of the public services in Wales. Like a lot of things emanating from the Welsh Govt, the idea is good but it cannot actually work because our public services are so troubled. I have two friends in England who are very starry-eyed about this Act and are of the opinion that the Welsh Govt are leading the way. But how can one even begin to talk about the well-being of future generations when we have a health and welfare sector riddled with corruption and malpractice?

There were some prize contributions to this discussion from Board members. Rycroft-Malone claimed that ‘we in the university…are trying to pay attention to it…giving consistent messages about what we expect from students in training…’ The main ‘messages’ those students get from you Jo is that you have a very big problem with overseas students and colleagues and that if students witness malpractice on placement there’s no point reporting it because it usually won’t be dealt with. Margaret commented that it wasn’t just a matter of box-ticking, it was adopting a ‘hearts and minds’ approach. In view of the various catastrophes occurring in that Health Board I think it’s rather a matter of ‘shock and awe’ than ‘hearts and minds’. Then came Lyn’s contribution – the ‘evil bitch’ adopted her best old lady from Liverpool manner and asked ‘are we aware or do we have a measure of how our staff understand the legislation?’ Which was particularly rich coming from a woman who, in her capacity as Director of HR at Bangor University, bent the rules so often and to such a degree and showed such an ignorance of all relevant legislation regarding bullying, harassment and discrimination that most of us wondered whether she really did have a law degree as she claimed. Geoff Lang (Executive Director of Strategy) wisely stated that if a straw poll was carried out, the staff probably understood ‘very little’ regarding the legislation. I have sympathy with the staff on this point – if they’re any good, they’ll be so busy trying to care for patients in the midst of chaos, dysfunction and aggressive management that considering esoteric legislation will be the least of their concerns. Peter Higson suggested that an online survey be e mailed to all staff  – they’re going to love you for that Peter, you’re already running an organisation full of staff going off sick with stress and depression who are consistently reporting burn-out and bullying from managers… Bethan then chipped in with the extraordinary comment that ‘a lot of agencies in the Third Sector’ that are commissioned by the Health Board are ‘achieving a great deal’. So who do you have in mind then Bethan – CAIS and MIND perhaps, who seem to be running some of the biggest scams imaginable, as previously described on the blog? Bethan stressed the importance of ‘monitoring’ these Third Sector organisations – I wish someone would, including Mantell Gwynedd, the Third Sector organisation that Bethan herself runs, some of us have wondered for years what services they are providing and to whom. Bethan stated that the sums involved in commissioning these organisations are ‘small’ – this blog has described how CAIS has recently received £1.5 million for ‘service user/carer involvement’ and nearly £5 million for ‘substance abuse services’ (which CAIS are very obviously not delivering on). £6.5 million might be cat’s piss to you Bethan, but if the Board gave that money to me I bet I could do a better job than CAIS. Bethan maintained that ‘a lot of the Third Sector bodies are measuring social value and doing it in quite a sophisticated way’. Is this Third Sector speak for ‘we are visibly not making a blind bit of difference, so we’re going to pretend that our critics are too daft to understand our ‘sophisticated’ ways of measuring ‘social value’? Meanwhile CAIS will continue to rake in millions for providing shelter and detox services, whilst towns like Wrexham fill up with homeless drug users. And from what people contacting this blog are reporting, no-one is actually managing to get a service out of ‘Parabl’, aptly described by one reader as ‘the love-child of MIND and CAIS’.

Gary the CEO gave a little spiel about all the e mails and letters that he receives ‘every week’ no less from patients bowled over by the Betsi. Presumably he just ignores the e mails – such as mine – who tell him when things are going dreadfully wrong. He also mentioned the ‘nutrition and hydration’ week, which featured on this blog recently, one of the ‘events’ involved being a ‘multi-disciplinary team’ of senior staff who were going to observe a ‘service user meal experience’ – translated this means that a collection of managers were actually going to watch someone eat their dinner. Lest anyone ever thought that even the Betsi couldn’t possibly do this, I’m glad to say that they did. Gary reported back to the Board and mentioned that ‘I appeared out of the blue, people didn’t know about it, they were surprised’. I imagine they were completely gobsmacked Gary, you’re paid something like £200,000 pa and you’re watching someone eat their pudding. Gary then moved onto other matters such as infection control and storage of medicines and commented that there are ‘other Boards doing better than us’. That’s why you’re in special measures Gary.

Then Martin spoke. This was certainly illuminating to someone like me who has some knowledge of how Martin conducted business in his previous incarnation as CEO of the North West Wales NHS Trust. The fact that Edwina Hart felt obliged to abolish that organisation and undertake a massive rebranding exercise in the (vain) hope that we’d all forget what happened there, hasn’t however prompted any inner reflection on the part of Martin. Martin started talking about staff performance. This is the man who literally terrorised staff at the North West Wales NHS Trust, the man who removed the beds from junior doctors rest rooms because he wasn’t going to pay them to lie down – even though these were junior doctors who were working extremely long shifts – and of course the man who was part of the management Board of a Trust that achieved fame when they purchased custom-made crockery for many thousands of pounds embossed with the Trusts ‘logo’, for their personal use. Meanwhile patients died – in great numbers. Martin hasn’t changed. He opened with the phrase ‘MY staff’, with the emphasis on the ‘my’. Not ‘our team’, but ‘MY staff’. They are not your staff Martin, you all work for the NHS. But this was characteristic of managers in the North West Wales NHS Trust. Their risk manager, John Bowles, actually used to refer to ‘my subordinates’. Martin then unveiled his latest Regime of Terror. After mentioning ‘staff health’ and stating that there’s a lot that can be done to ‘help staff adjust’ and build ‘resilience’ (resilience to Martin’s aggression, that’ll take some building), Martin stated that he was going to ‘discuss with people how they are progressing’. God, can you imagine what that will entail. Martin explained that there was going to be ‘an increase in the number of training days’ and that this ‘will result in staff being excluded without pay if they fail to attend’. Now I heard the details of the ‘training’ that was ‘offered’ at the North West Wales Trust when Martin was CEO. The staff were seething, because they maintained that it was very obviously not ‘training’ at all, it was always a tick-box exercise on a computer that trained no-one in anything and furthermore everyone maintained that there was only one purpose to this ‘training’ – so that in the event of complaint, litigation or even tragedy, Martin could maintain that the staff had been ‘trained’ and that member of staff would therefore be deemed fully responsible and would be hung out to dry by Martin in order to protect the wider organisation and of course Martin himself, from scrutiny. Furthermore I was told that because there were many more staff required to do the ‘training’ than computers available for use, it was often impossible to complete the training. These were of course the same computers that staff had to use for clinical work, to update patients records etc. I was told that the ‘training’ was sending the Trust into chaos and preventing people from seeing their patients. And Martin is doing it all over again – this time accompanied by a threat to withdraw pay (would that even be legal?). The Betsi Board recently hit the headlines when it was revealed that staff were refusing to co-operate with the external investigation into the Tawel Fan scandal, in which elderly mentally ill patients were found to have been seriously abused and neglected on Tawel Fan, a ward in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. No-one mentioned withdrawing their pay. But if anyone sticks two fingers up to Martin’s dodgy ‘training’ or even just isn’t able to find a computer… Martin then announced to the Board that he of course had been ‘compliant with my management training’ and began to talk about the computerised system that is so easy to use – staff just have to log on and away they go. No excuses!

As Martin has learnt absolutely nothing despite having ‘his’ Trust abolished and being removed from his previous job, may I suggest that someone at the Betsi starts carrying out DBS checks on ALL staff. When Martin was CEO of the North West Wales NHS Trust, I was told that criminal record checks were not being carried out. This resulted in the employment of at least one person with previous convictions for assault in a role with direct patient contact….

I left the meeting after hearing Martin explain his latest plans to ensure that the recruitment crisis and breakdowns among staff at the Betsi will continue for some while yet. As I left, I spent a long time pondering on why the Betsi Board are actually putting themselves through this. They cannot run the Board, things are getting worse by the day and now they’re getting touchy about my comments on this blog. Higson looks like a bag of nerves, Martin spent the whole meeting staring downwards at the desk in front of him – even when he was unveiling his plans for the Great Terror – and Phil the Rebel Member had the distinct appearance of a very guilty man facing a police investigation for serious crimes. Which is odd because Phil is the former Police Federation chief for north Wales. Phil doesn’t need to be on the Betsi Board, he will have a generous police pension, even Gordon Anglesea’s widow received one of these, thanks to Arfon Jones, the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner. Higson is past retirement age as well, he will have a state pension as well as a gold-plated pot from his many years concealing wrongdoing in the mental health services and I bet that he’s paid off his mortgage by now as well. If anyone knows why Higson has not sailed off into the sunset on a Saga cruise, please do let me know.
