The Cry Of The Lunatic

My post ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’ supplies a few details regarding the mental health system of the wider UK in the 1980s, when the British Gov’t was actively colluding with Dafydd and his gang’s activities in north Wales, which had by then got completely out of hand and were dominating the whole region. Since I wrote that post I have found out far, far more regarding the reasons why Dafydd et al were allowed to involve themselves in serious organised crime unhindered. It was of course because they were supplying the Westminster Paedophile Ring and were part of an international trafficking network.

They were so many people who protected Dafydd, let alone the wider gang across the UK, that I still have more people to name and events to correlate, but it is very obvious that by the mid-1980s, when Mary Wynch, Alison Taylor and I would not shut up about crimes against vulnerable people in north Wales, Dafydd’s mates in high places really pulled out all the stops to save the bacon of the gang.

Jimmy Savile was appointed to the Broadmoor task force in a non-executive role from Jan 1987. Professor Oliver Brooke of St George’s Hospital Medical School, a big name in the pan-European ring of which Dafydd et al were a part, pleaded guilty to child porn offences on 18 Dec 1986 at Kingston Crown Court. Savile had of course been involved with ‘volunteering’ at Broadmoor since 1968, but it was after Ollie was arrested and convicted that the Dept of Health under Secretary of State Norman Fowler and then Ken Clarke gave the man who was known to be a serial sex offender a leading role in the management of Broadmoor, Baroness Jean Trumpington being the genius of a junior Health Minister who actually did the deed (see post ’95 Glorious Years!’). Jimmy Savile is known to have procured children for the sexual use of ‘VIPs’. Broadmoor housed a great many ‘dangerous patients’ who had dared complain about being molested in various care settings. The institution was completely lawless and run by the POA, who were not only battering and molesting the patients but were also working massive swindles and embezzling huge quantities of money from the hospital coffers. Thatch’s Gov’t could not reign the POA in, obviously because those members who staffed Broadmoor – and of course Ashworth and Rampton – knew damn well that scores of their ‘dangerous’ patients had been banged up simply because they were witnesses to serious crime, including that committed by people at the highest levels of society.

It was on 11 May 1987 that Lord Chief Justice Geoffrey Lane released Oliver Brooke from prison on appeal and compared Ollie’s extensive collection of child porn, some of which he had acquired from Amsterdam and Copenhagen, to a collection of cigarette cards. Geoffrey Lane referred to the numerous testimonials to Ollie’s good character that he had received, although I have not been able to discover who provided those testimonials or indeed who Ollie’s defence team were.

In early 1987, the DHSS mandarin responsible for mental health, Brian McGinnis, left his post. McGinnis was later barred from working with children after concerns about his conduct toward them (see post ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’). McGinnis was replaced by Cliff Graham, a close friend of Jimmy Savile, who then ensured that Savile was given a leading role in the Broadmoor management team. Cliff Graham was even more successful at ensuring that the UK’s mental health system doubled up as a people trafficking organisation than McGinnis had been (see post ‘The Old Devils’). It was Cliff Graham who as part of his ‘reforms’ recommended the establishment of the SHSA (Special Hospital Services Authority). Everything that Graham did served to make Dafydd et al even more untouchable.

It was from 1987 onward that people in Somerset who knew what was happening to me in north Wales found themselves befriended by the rich n famous with links to leading Tories (see posts ‘These Who Are Ready To Serve’ and ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’) and subsequently in receipt of a great deal of dosh.

After years of chaos and Savile-inspired crime at Broadmoor, in 1994 Cliff Graham was succeeded by Clive Wilson, who remarked on the lack of paperwork relating to previous events at the DHSS/DoH. In rather the same way that in 1995 when Nicola Davies QC was employed to conduct a review of the paperwork of the North Wales Police relating to the abuse of children in care in north Wales, Nicola – now Dame Nicola (see post ‘This Is What Happened To Nicola, Niclas, Merfyn, Joan and Kathryn’) – discovered that all the paperwork from the last ten years was missing.

The DHSS was a major and crucial Gov’t Dept. How exactly did it find itself devoid of paperwork while a gang of paedophiles were given free range within it? Perhaps some could ask former Secretaries of State Norman Fowler, Ken Clarke, William Waldegrave and Virginia Bottomley.

Let’s look at a few more of those who were given responsibility for Broadmoor while a gang of sex offenders were allowed to use it as a prison for their victims as well as witnesses to their crimes.

Sheila Drew Smith was the Chair of the Broadmoor Special Health Authority. Sheila was a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life (the Nolan Committee), 2012-18. In 2015, Sheila Drew Smith was commissioned by Home Secretary Theresa May to conduct an independent review of governance proposals made by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) in response to the Triennial Review of the IPCC.

Sheila also served and might still serve as the Chair of the National Approved Letting Scheme from 2013 and as a Committee Member of Safe Agents. Her previous roles have included: Board Member of the Housing Corporation, 2002-08; Board Member of the Audit Commission, 2004-10; Board Member of Infrastructure Planning Commission, 2010-12 and Office of the Regulator of Social Housing (Tenant Services Authority), 2008-12; Member of the Selection Panel, Network Rail, 2010-present; Member of the Appointments Panel, Bar Standards Board, 2010-present.

Sheila has also been a Director of Circles Services Ltd, Circle Anglia Foundation Ltd and the Centre for Economic Policy Research.

Sheila’s early career was as an accountant with PwC, 1984-95. She was a Board member and then the Chair of Tower Hamlets Housing Action Trust, 1999-04 and has been a Board member of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation since 2009. So Sheila knows a great deal about the development of Canary Wharf which involved a number of those Tower Hamlets Councillors who had concealed the trafficking of youngsters between the East End and Dafydd’s gang in north Wales, as well as about the efforts of Sir Sam Everington, a Top Doctor and leading light in the BMA and Lord Andrew Mawson in concealing the same heap of crap. See posts ‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘The Bodies Beneath Canary Wharf’.

The junior Minister in the DoH with responsibilities for Broadmoor, 1988-90 – when Savile had free reign and Dafydd and his mates banged their victims up in there – was the Tory Roger Norman Freeman, Baron Freeman, MP for Kettering, 1983-97.

Freeman was born on the Wirral and educated at Whitgift School, Croydon and Balliol College. When he was at Oxford, Freeman was the President of the Oxford University Conservative Association, 1964. Before entering Parliament, Freeman was an accountant for an investment bank.

Freeman was a junior Minister for the Armed Forces (1986–88) and then moved to the DoH to collude with Dafydd and the paedophiles. Between 1990 and 1995, he was Minister of State for Public Transport and in that post he was responsible for steering through the Commons the Railways Bill, providing for the privatisation of British Rail and enacted as the Railways Act 1993.

In Lilibet’s 1993 Birthday Honours – by which time the North Wales Police had ‘failed to find any evidence’ of the paedophile ring which Roger Freeman was concealing, a leading light of which was Sir Peter Morrison, the brother of Dame Mary Morrison, Woman of the Bedchamber to Lilibet – Freeman became a Privy Councillor.

On 26 June 1995, Freeman was brought into the Cabinet by John Major as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and in this role, Freeman made a Ministerial visit to Lancaster Royal Grammar School, who’s most famous old boy is probably Cecil Parkinson, who also concealed Dafydd’s gang (see previous posts).

Freeman also inaugurated the process of privatisation of HMSO, though as a former Minister for MoD Procurement, one of HMSO’s major customers, he could be adjudged to have had a conflict of interest. He misjudged the effect of privatisation on HMSO, which, rather than preserve the business as a whole and protecting jobs, hastened the already-established process of splitting the business into its various parts, resulting in the destruction of some and the sale of others to foreign owners. The loss of jobs was massive and the old office building in Norwich is derelict. The National Audit Office later denounced the whole process as a debacle.

Freeman was narrowly defeated in the 1997 General Election and was rewarded with a peerage, just as Sir Ronald Waterhouse was calling the former kids in care who gave evidence at the Waterhouse Inquiry a pack of liars.

Lord Freeman was the chairman of the charity SkillForce, 2004-16. He is now Patron of SkillForce and the Independent Transport Commission. His wife, Jennifer Freeman, is a former Secretary of the Victorian Society and is a specialist developer of architecturally historic buildings.

Savile’s mate Alan Franey, who was appointed General Manager of Broadmoor after Trumpers gave the green light for Savile and his friends to colonise the management of the institution, took early retirement in July 1997, after the depths to which Broadmoor had sunk were so low that it could not be concealed any longer. Jo Sheehan was appointed as an interim manager. Jo had previously been the HR Director at Broadmoor, so she was well-acquainted with the thugs of the POA who violently assaulted the victims of the paedophile gang that were incarcerated in there and also kept schtum about Jimmy Savile sexually assaulting them, although it has now been admitted that two female patients are thought to have killed themselves as a result of Savile. Complain about Dafydd and his mates assaulting you? You’ll be banged up in Broadmoor where Savile will then enjoy himself. St Helena Kennedy and the Friends Of The Oppressed Wimmin will not say a word and should you complain everyone will be reminded that you are a Dangerous Mental Patient (see post ‘Close Your Eyes And Make A WISH’).

After Jo, a new CEO was appointed to Broadmoor – Dr Julie Hollyman. Hollyman had previously worked as a Top Doctor at Springfield Hospital, the mental health unit attached to St George’s, when the Top Docs at St George’s and Springfield and their social work colleagues in Wandsworth Social Services were colluding with Dafydd et al in north Wales as well as with the paedophile gang on their own doorstep (see posts ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London…’ and ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’).

When I worked at St George’s I had a run-in with Julie Hollyman. I had rung her secretary up with the results of a pregnancy test for a Springfield patient and the secretary had been incredibly rude to me. I challenged the secretary regarding her dreadful manner and then Hollyman rang me, told me that her secretary was never been rude to anyone and then launched an attack on me. So I told Hollyman that her secretary had indeed been very rude and I wasn’t going to bandy words with Hollyman who had not heard the exchange. I suspected that Hollyman was going to make a complaint about me, so I told my senior colleagues what had happened. It transpired that they knew Hollyman, I was told that she was a bloody nightmare and Prof Geoffrey Chamberlain quipped that Hollyman should be a patient not a Top Doc. Which was all deeply ironic because the whole lot of them were colluding with Hollyman and her colleagues with regard to concealing organised abuse, although they clearly loathed her.

While Julie Hollyman worked at Springfield, patients and staff were murdered and a number of female patients were sexually assaulted, raped and became pregnant. At Broadmoor, there had been a scandal revolving around a female member of staff having a lesbian relationship with a patient – who had been transferred to Broadmoor from Springfield. The patient was transferred back to Springfield and the relationship with the member of staff from Broadmoor continued.

So Julie Hollyman as well as her Springfield colleagues had a very cosy relationship with Broadmoor before Hollyman was ever appointed CEO. When Hollyman was in post at Broadmoor, public statements were made regarding Hollyman ‘turning around’ Broadmoor and greatly improving things there. It later became clear that these statements were lies. But then when Hollyman was at Springfield, Springfield was being touted as a centre of excellence. For more information on the awful Hollyman and the many senior roles which she has held in the NHS, see post ‘A Pretty Classy Piece Of Operation’.

Thomas Strachan Heppell was another mandarin in the DoH with responsibility for Broadmoor when it was run by a pan-European paedophile gang. Strachan Heppell served in the UK Civil Service, 1958-95 and worked on health and social services policy, as Deputy Secretary in the DHSS, 1986-95. Heppell was subsequently a Visiting Fellow at the LSE; Chair of the Family Fund Trust for Families With Severely Disabled Children, 1997-03; Board member of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission; Chair of the European Institute for Health, 2007. Strachan Heppell also served as a Director of Tor Bryan Residence in Essex.

The concerns regarding patients in special hospitals being subjected to extreme violence by the staff – and occasionally being killed by them – really took off after allegations were made of serious abuse of patients at Rampton in a 1980 Yorkshire Television documentary. People were shocked at what was revealed but there was no awareness at that time that many of those patients were not even ‘dangerous criminals’, yet alone victims of vicious sex abuse gangs which were being facilitated by the biggest names in British forensic psychiatry, including Prof Robert Bluglass of Birmingham University, Dr Paul Bowden of the Maudsley and Prof Nigel Eastman of St George’s/Springfield, all of whom were mates with Dafydd and who feature on my documents.

Dr Paul Bowden and his moustache:

Paul Bowden

It was Sir John Boynton who was asked in 1980 to Chair the Inquiry into the abuse of patients at Rampton.

John Boynton was born in Carlisle and attended Glasgow Academy and Dulwich College, before taking a degree in law at London University and qualifying as a solicitor in 1939, undertaking his articles with the town clerk of Lambeth. In 1940 he joined the 15th Scottish Reconnaissance Regiment and served in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Boynton served as a military magistrate in Germany after the end of the WWII, before returning to England where he worked as a solicitor for Derbyshire County Council. There was a long-standing paedophile ring in Derbyshire with links to Dafydd et al in north Wales. Boynton then served as Deputy Clerk of the Peace in Berkshire. In 1964 he moved to Cheshire, where he became Clerk of the Council and, after local government reorganisation in 1974, the first Chief Executive of the newly constituted Cheshire County Council, a post he held until 1979.

Dafydd’s gang in north Wales extended as far as Cheshire. Cheshire Social Services colluded with the gang in north Wales/Cheshire. Lucille Hughes back in the mists of time had worked as a social worker in Cheshire, as did Margaret Hanson who is currently Vice-Chair of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Margaret is married to David Hanson, the Labour MP for Delyn, who was appointed as Blair’s PPS in 2001, in the aftermath of the Waterhouse Report (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part II’).

Both Margaret and David Hanson were Councillors in Cheshire when kids in care of Cheshire County Council were abused. The Chair of the Betsi Board is Dr Peter Higson, who was a clinical psychologist at and then manager of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh when Dafydd was unlawfully imprisoning victims of the paedophile gang in the dungeon there.

Boyton was instrumental in establishing the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE), and became its founding President in 1974. He was also elected President of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 1976 and was a member of the Economic Planning Council for North West England.

Upon Boyton’s retirement from local government, he was appointed by the British FCO to oversee new national elections in Rhodesia following the Lancaster Health Agreement, involving the rival guerrilla organisations led by Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo. Despite evidence of intimidation of voters and candidates, Boynton concluded that the elections – which resulted in Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party securing a majority of seats – had been ‘a reflection of the wishes of the people’.

Boynton’s Inquiry found problems relating to Rampton’s isolation, lack of leadership and focus on containment rather than therapy. He definitely did not find that a good proportion of the patients were distressed people who had been witnesses to a trafficking gang and who had been fitted up by Top Doctors when they complained about this.

However, Boyton’s Report was highly critical of an internal complaints procedure under which not one of 178 complaints regarding Rampton over a four year period had been upheld. Boyton’s recommendations led to the formation, in 1983, of the Mental Health Act Commission, to oversee conditions under which mental patients were detained.

Throughout its entire existence, the MHAC was led by a series of people who all colluded with Dafydd and the gang, as detailed in previous posts. In 1987, the MHAC were fully on board with the efforts of Dafydd et al to frame and imprison me for ‘attempting to stab a doctor’. The plan unravelled when a nursing officer didn’t tell as many lies as required and when a police sergeant at Bangor Police Station refused to take phone calls from Angels who rang up claiming that I had threatened them as well and then stopped Dr D.G.E. Wood from coming into my cell. Dafydd and the MHAC didn’t realise that things had gone pear shaped and among my documents are letters from a David Ewart of the MHAC to the mental health services in north Wales confirming that I was now in Risley Remand Centre. See post ‘Security, Security’.

In 1994 I and another Hergest Unit patient made representation to the MHAC that Dafydd was behaving improperly with female patients and that complaints about him were not being investigated by the NHS. The MHAC admitted that there had been allegations of this nature against Dafydd stretching back to the 1960s. I heard no more from the MHAC and documents now in my possession show that after I raised concerns with the MHAC, the Chairman and CEO of the Gwynedd Community Health Trust failed to respond to communications from me or indeed the MHAC, but instead consulted lawyers to ask if there was ‘anymore that could be done’ to prosecute me (see post ‘The Banality Of Evil’).

Sir John Boynton was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire in 1975 and was knighted in 1979. By that time, Sir Peter Morrison was the Tory MP for Chester and was abusing kids in care in north Wales, Cheshire and elsewhere.

Boyton married first, in 1947, to Gabrielle Stanglmaier, whom he met during his time in Germany. He married secondly, in 1979, to Edith Laane, who came from The Hague.

Boynton’s obituary in ‘Focus’, the newsletter of SOLACE, told us that Boynton ‘raised the profile’ of SOLACE as a body ‘which was respected by senior civil servants’ ‘to consult on government proposals for legislation and administrative changes’. When questioned by the press on the need to hold the SOLACE Annual Dinner at the Savoy, Boynton replied that ‘Claridges was fully booked’. At least Boynton and his mates could catch up with Ronnie Waterhouse at The Savoy, Waterhouse virtually lived at the Garrick and the Savoy.

Baroness Lucy Faithfull was someone who knew a great deal about the young lives of some of those who ended up in the clutches of the secure hospitals. Faithfull was born in South Africa, the daughter of an Angel and an army officer. When her father was killed in WWI in 1916, her mother returned to England. Lucy was educated at Bournemouth and studied then at the Sorbonne, which she financed by work in a nursery in Paris. At some point Faithfull also gained a degree in social sciences from Birmingham University. After her education, Faithfull worked at Birmingham Settlement for three years until 1935 as a social worker, running clubs and acting as a caseworker. She subsequently worked in the Education Dept of the London County Council as a care committee organiser. Child abuse was concealed by the London County Council. During WWII and until 1948, Faithfull served as a regional welfare officer for the evacuee programme. In the following decade Lucy Faithfull became employed as an Inspector in the Children’s Dept of the Home Office, which at the time colluded with the abuse of children.

Faithfull joined Oxford City Council in 1958 as one of the first children’s officers and she was appointed its Director of Social Services in 1970, retiring in 1974. There was a substantial problem with child abuse in the Oxford area, which was concealed by the Oxford City Council’s Social Services, including by Oxford social worker Barbara Kahan and Barbara’s husband, child psychiatrist Dr Vladimir Kahan. Barbara Kahan became a social work adviser on children in care to Sir Keith Joseph in Ted Heath’s Gov’t and remained on hand to advise Gov’t and organisations concerned with the welfare of children throughout the 1980s. See post ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’.

Lucy Faithfull knew Barbara Kahan as well as Lord Longford, Longford being someone who spent decades colluding with the serious abuse of children, prisoners and psych patients (see post ‘Comedies Of Menace’).

It was Thatch who offered Lucy Faithfull a seat in the Lords – Faithfull was a Tory, although when she was offered her peerage, people claimed not to know that. Faithfull refused but soon gave in and accepted a peerage when Thatch asked her again. Faithfull was the first social worker to sit in the Lords, so she had obviously been very useful to someone. In the Lords, Faithfull was instrumental in the passing of the Children Act 1989, which seems to have done as little for vulnerable children as every other bit of legislation alleged to ‘protect’ them has. Faithfull helped to establish and from 1995 Chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group for Children, which has acted as a magnet for the paedophiles’ friends in Parliament.

Lucy Faithfull was a ‘vociferous opponent’ of Home Secretary Michael Howard’s Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill of 1994 which proposed the establishment of secure ‘training centres’ in the grounds of adult prisons for children aged between 12 and 14, arguing that locking up children is ineffective and that the huge cost of these could be better spent intervening with families at an earlier stage. Faithfull remained silent about Michael Howard’s ruination of Mary Wynch which had occurred the year previously but became known to Parliament in 1994 (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’). Faithfull did of course keep schtum throughout all those investigations and inquiries during the 1980s and 90s into the abuse of children in care as well.

Faithfull was Trustee of a number of voluntary organisations, notably the Caldecott Community and Bessels Leigh Schools. She was involved with the NSPCC, was the Vice-President of the National Association of Voluntary Hostels from 1978 and of Barnardo’s from 1989. Barnardo’s was yet another organisation which colluded with the abuse and trafficking of children in its care. Rhodri Morgan’s widow Julie is the former Assistant Director of Barnardo’s. Julie and Rhodri kept quiet about organised child abuse throughout their careers and were pals with Jim Callaghan, who along with his wife Audrey also concealed child abuse, Audrey having done so when she served on the London County Council (see post ‘Cry, The Beloved Country’).

Faithfull was one of the founders and President of the NCB (National Children’s Bureau), with which Barbara Kahan and the paedophile social work academic Peter Righton were also involved.

In 1993 Faithfull founded the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, which works ‘as a child protection agency helping sexually abused children and their families’. The Lucy Faithfull Foundation has received much good PR as being ‘the only organisation which works with paedophiles who want to change their behaviour’. Interestingly enough, the Lucy Faithfull Foundation does no such thing. Two of my friends were supporting a man who had served a prison sentence for the possession of child porn who was genuinely keen to change his behaviour, after receiving no ‘therapy’ in prison, although that prison told the world that it did provide therapy for sex offenders. My friends contacted the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, only to be told that they did not offer any sort of counselling or therapy for offenders and could not recommend anyone who did. However the Foundation did subsequently recommend that my friends should purchase two self-help manuals on porn addiction – which wasn’t actually the problem of the man whom they were supporting. By this time he was back in prison for breaching his parole conditions. So my friends asked me if I would take the books into him because he did want to read them and the Governor of the prison had given permission for him to read the books in the prison library. I took the books in, only to be told by the prison officers in reception that I was not allowed to give him the books, even if the Governor had given permission and anyway they knew nuzzing. So I visited the man without the books. As far as I know Stafford Prison still has the books. Stafford Prison advertises itself as a prison for sex offenders which helps them address their offending behaviour etc, but then the Lucy Faithful Foundation tells the world that it offers help to sex offenders.

Lucy Faithfull of Tall Stories died unmarried in London in 1996, so didn’t live long enough to participate in the cover-up which was the Waterhouse Inquiry.

Baroness Lucy Faithfull knew Baroness Beatrice Serota. Beatrice Serota was brought up in the East End of London, the daughter of Jewish refugees from central Europe. She was educated at John Howard School and at the LSE. Serota joined the Civil Service in 1941 and worked in the crucial Ministry of Fuel and Power throughout WWII until 1946.

Serota became a member of the Hampstead Borough Council immediately after WWII and subsequently served successively on the London County Council as the member for Brixton and the GLC as the member for Lambeth. Investigations into the paedophile ring in Lambeth which during the 1970s, 80s and 90s was linked to Dafydd’s gang revealed that organised abuse in Lambeth reached back as far as the 1940s.

Serota chaired the LCC children’s committee for seven years and was a member of the Central Training Council for Child Care for at least nine years. The LCC concealed child abuse. Serota became a Chief Whip when she was on the GLC. Serota was Vice-Chair of ILEA, 1964-67. Members of ILEA colluded with organised child abuse for years, even before it became notorious as a bastion of the ‘loony left’ in the 1970s.

It was Serota’s ‘distinguished career in local government and the work that she did for children’ which in 1967 brought her a seat in the Lords as a ‘recognised authority on the subject’. Just like Lucy Faithfull!

Harold Wilson appointed Baroness Serota as a Gov’t Whip almost immediately that she was through the door of the Lords and then proposed her for the post of Deputy to Richard Crossman, having refused to promote Fattersley, whom Wilson suspected of disloyalty. Thus Serota was Crossman’s Minister of State, first at the Department of Health in 1968 and then in the combined DHSS the following year. Serota knew what Dafydd and Gwynne the lobotomist were getting up to in north Wales in those days and she’ll have known that huge swathes of the rest of the mental health system, including the ‘flagship’ that was the Maudsley, were facilitating the abuse of vulnerable people (see posts ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’ and ‘The Mentor’).

Serota’s obituary in ‘The Guardian’ commented that her time as Deputy to Dick Crossman ‘proved to be her only period of office as a government minister and yet she spent a lifetime in politics’ and that ‘Until the end of her life she was devoted to the London suburb of Hampstead, where she lived as an adult and cut her political teeth as a young married woman’. Hampstead housed numerous Top Doctors and members of the political class who were, like Serota, keeping a lid on the organised abuse of children and vulnerable people. ‘The Guardian’ tells us that Serota ‘was widely respected and liked in the Lords as a capable and competent person. She was conscientious, she got on with things and yet, as Dick Crossman identified early on in her political career, she was not going to challenge others because of personal ambition. She perhaps lacked decisiveness, that was what he thought. But this did not prevent her from having a very busy life, involving many decisions about the lives of others.’

What a bloody nightmare – an interfering old bag of a useful idiot who wielded power over The Poor while she lived among the best in Hampsty and looked after their interests.

Hansard, March 1969, records an account of the Lords discussion regarding the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into the Ely Hospital, Cardiff. The Committee of Inquiry was set up in 1967 by the Welsh Hospital Board at the request of Sir Kenneth Robinson, the then Minister of Health and one of the bestest friends that Dafydd and the paedophiles have ever had (see previous posts), to investigate allegations of severe ill-treatment of patients. The Committee was Chaired by one Geoffrey Howe QC. The Ely Hospital Scandal resulted from a whistleblowing nursing assistant who was discredited and smeared in every way possible, although his allegations that patients were being appallingly abused were found to be true. In its defence, Ely Hospital maintained that matters on their patch weren’t as bad as at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. There was no investigation into Denbigh despite this line of defence being used by Ely.

Serota made a statement to the Lords about the Committee of Inquiry into Ely in her capacity as the Minister of State for the DHSS. Even old Howe, who before being elected to the Commons had worked as a barrister on the corrupt Chester and Wales Circuit and had been a close friend of Ronald Waterhouse since they were both at university, had to admit that things at Ely were very, very bad, what with staff grossly abusing their positions, stealing from the hospital and ill-treating patients.

By the time that Howe Chaired that Inquiry, he had been the Tory MP for Bebington on the Wirral, 1964-66, so will have known that the empire of Dafydd et al reached as far as there. Howe was to spend many more years in the Commons and then in the Lords colluding with Dafydd et al and I do wonder if Howe may have had a role in the destruction of F, the north Wales mental health patient who had witnessed very serious crime on the part of professional people, both where he grew up in Surrey – Howe was an MP for a Surrey constituency from 1970-92 – and later when F moved to Bethesda (see previous posts).

Serota fessed up that Howe’s Report on Ely made it clear that ‘Responsibility for serious deficiencies in standards of medical and nursing services and of administration is attributed to the senior staff of the hospital, to the Hospital Management Committee and to the Welsh Hospital Board. The Committee also criticises the present procedures for dealing with complaints in the hospital service as a whole.

‘We didn’t know’.

The poor old Lords was deeply shocked by Howe’s Report and there was a great deal of ‘never againing’, while stressing that it was only CERTAIN WARDS of Ely Hospital which had been roundly condemned and many comments about the need to think long and hard about this Report before anyone made any rash comments or decisions. Many of the Lords reassured themselves that Ely was an isolated case. Within just a few years it became clear that virtually every long-stay hospital had problems as bad as Ely, if not worse.

Lord Brooke of Cumnor told the Lords that ‘most of us would agree with what the noble Baroness said about not generalising from this lamentable case, but, instead, extending our support and appreciation to the devoted staff who work in many other long-stay hospitals—sometimes, I am sorry to say, under almost soul-destroying conditions. As to what is wrong, the responsibility of Ministers is involved, as well as of Regional Hospital Boards and hospital management committees. Do the Government recognise that the whole of the hospital service is critically short of money and that, while hospitals for the mentally subnormal are in the greatest need of all if they are to satisfy modern requirements, their needs cannot be rightly made good by simply twisting more tightly still the financial screw on other hospitals?’

Thank God that the staff of Ely weren’t a bunch of violent psychopaths, they were simply working in soul-destroying conditions with not enough dosh. As indeed the Angels have been on every occasion on which they have been caught red-handed battering the living daylights out of the vulnerable or helping themselves to NHS funds.

Lord Brooke of Cumnore was Henry Brooke, who survived Harold Macmillan’s Night of the Long Knives to become Home Secretary, 1962-64. Brooke is considered by some to have been one of the worst Home Secretary’s of the 20th century. Before entering Parliament, Henry Brooke worked in the Conservative Research Dept under the Chairmanship of Neville Chamberlain. Brooke was the Tory MP for Lewisham West, 1938-45, then served on the London County Council, 1946-51, for much of that time as Leader of the Conservatives on the LCC. Brooke also served on Hampstead Borough Council until 1955. Brooke returned to Parliament in 1950, serving in various roles including as Minister for Welsh Affairs in Macmillan’s Gov’t.

It was Brooke who, as Minister for Welsh Affairs, caused fury throughout north Wales through his crucial support of Liverpool Council’s bid to secure Westminster’s approval of an Act of Parliament to flood Cwm Tryweryn in Meirionydd to build a reservoir to provide water for Liverpool – drowning the village of Capel Celyn in the process – and thus by-passing Welsh local authority opposition to the scheme. However, largely in response to the protests over Tryweryn, Brooke subsequently attracted investment to Wales, including such projects as the Severn Bridge, the steelworks at Llanwern and the Heads of the Valleys Road. I note that the beneficiaries of Brooke’s investment which resulted from the fury over Tryweryn though were those in south Wales. North Wales lost a Welsh-speaking village and a valley and everyone was told to stop bellyaching because the scousers needed water.

Dafydd built up much of his power-base among Plaid supporters as a result of Tryweryn. Dafydd was still a medical student at Liverpool University when the anti-Tryweryn activism was happening and Dafydd travelled to Ireland in order to learn techniques at the knee of Irish republican activists (see post ‘A Network Stretching Back Decades…’) So after convincing Welsh activists that he was Of Them and would even resort to violent activity to defend Language and Nation, Dafydd busied himself cultivating the company of the corrupt professional classes of Liverpool who’s co-operation he would soon put to good use in building up a trafficking ring to supply celebs and politicians of all colours with young people for sex, as Henry Brooke, Baroness Serota et al knew by the time that they were spouting off in the Lords about the caring Angels of Ely Hospital.

Henry Brooke was given a peerage in 1966. He married Barbara Brooke, who was the daughter of a Welsh Minister and was given a peerage in her own right after her loyal service concealing the crimes of Dafydd and other Top Docs. Barbara Brooke was a member of Hampstead Council, a seat she held between 1948 until 1965; she also was a Joint Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party, 1954-64. Barbara was active in a number of health organisations in her lifetime, including being a member of the North West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board from 1954–66; Chair of The Queen’s Institute of District Nursing from 1961–71; and the North London Hospital Management Committee from 1963-66.

Baroness Brooke was really impressed with the Seebohm Report (see post ‘The Great Stink’) and I think that she might have been a member of the Seebohm Committee. Seebohm’s recommendations that new personal Social Services Depts should be established within local gov’t and take over children’s services, as well as the care of the mentally ill and handicapped, were despised by Dick Crossman but nonetheless accepted and were put into action from 1971 onward, by which time Ted Heath was PM. Barbara stated that ‘What the Seebohm Committee wants is a family service geared to meeting as many as possible of the needs of the family’. It was the Seebohm Report which led to the dysfunctional Social Services Depts which were run and colonised by paedophiles who then used the role of those Depts as a ‘family service’ to destroy the families of their victims if they complained about what was happening to their kids.

Here’s Babs, ready to dispense advice to the lower orders:

Barbara was both a Dame and a Baroness.

Henry and Babs Brooke had four children:

Peter Brooke was the Tory MP for the Cities of London and Westminster, 1977-2001. Peter Brooke was, among other things, the Chairman of the Tory Party, 1987-89 and Secretary of State for N Ireland, 1989-92. Guess who concealed the crimes of Dafydd et al when Dafydd was in middle age, as well as the Kincora Boys’ Home elite paedophile ring? Brooke was rewarded with a peerage in 2001, when the outrage over the cover-up which was the Waterhouse Report had died down a bit.

Henry Brooke was a judge and Lord Justice of Appeal.

Honor Brooke, who married Dr Thomas Nigel Miller

Margaret Brooke, who married Dr James Pulfer.

During the Lords debate regarding Ely Hospital, Lord Amulree stated that ‘I should like to associate myself with what the noble Lord, Lord Brooke, said about the staff of these hospitals. Like him, I have had considerable experience of the conditions under which they work and of the marvellous work they manage to do under those deplorable conditions. One wants to pay the biggest tribute one can to the devotion to duty which they show…The first comment I would make (possibly it is unwise, but I should like to make it) is that it is the attitude of the senior staff that really lays down the attitude in the whole hospital, from the senior doctor down to the junior member of the ward staff. I am pleased to see that the Minister is to consider some way of changing the form of complaint, and possibly to introduce some form of inspection—I do not mean that in a pejorative way at all, but in a general, friendly and hopeful kind of way…’

Lord Amulree need never have worried about an inspection system which would be in any way ‘pejorative’, that will absolutely never happen. No matter how serious the crimes of Top Doctors and Angels and how many people they kill, all they ever get is indeed a few words ‘in a general, friendly and hopeful kind of way…’

That’s why there are bodies buried out at Denbigh which no-one will recover…

Lord Amulree was of course a Top Doctor, Basil Mackenzie, the 2nd Baron Amulree. Furthermore Lord Dr Baz was a ‘leading advocate of geriatric medicine’ and it was the EMI patients in Ely Hospital who were being abused, so it really should have been Lord Dr Baz who was most condemning rather than wanting a few friendly hopeful words to be had with the patient bashers.

Amulree was born in South Kensington and was educated at Lancing College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Upon graduating Amulree joined the Ministry of Health, initially working on the delivery of cancer services, but left in 1949 to become physician in charge of the geriatric department at UCH. He was Governor and President of a number of organisations including the British Geriatrics Society, the Society for the Study of Medical Ethics and the Association of Occupational Therapists.

Amulree succeeded his father in the barony in 1942. He was a Liberal Peer and Whip between 1955 and 1977  and spoke in the Lords on a variety of issues in relation to the care of the elderly. Lord Amulree died in December 1983, aged 83, unmarried. The barony became extinct on his death. According to the writer and friend of Pablo Picasso, James Lord, around 1948 Amulree was having an affair with the art historian Douglas Cooper; when they parted, Cooper settled with art historian John Richardson.

Douglas Cooper was not eligible for regular military service due to an eye injury, so he chose to join a medical unit in Paris when WWII started, commanded by the art patron Etienne de Beaumont. Cooper received a French Medaille Militaire as a result. Back in Liverpool Cooper was arrested as a spy because of his French uniform, missing papers and improper behaviour. Subsequently, he joined the RAF Intelligence unit and was sent to Cairo as an interrogator, a job at which he was enormously successful in squeezing out secrets from even hard-boiled prisoners, not least due to his “‘evil queen’ ferocity, penetrating intelligence, and refusal to take no for an answer, as well as his ability to storm, rant, and browbeat in Hochdeutsch, dialect or argot, [which] were just the qualifications that his new job required.” Cooper enjoyed the ‘social life’ there greatly.

After a short interlude in Malta – which was the location for a number of those who have been named as people in high places involved with child abuse or facilitating that abuse including Lord Mountbatten and Sir Alec Bingley (see post ‘The Defence Of The Realm’) – Cooper was assigned to a unit investigating Nazi looted art. Cooper’s detailed research on the Swiss art trade during the war revealed that many dealers and collectors had been involved in trading looted art. Cooper spent the whole month of February 1945 interrogating dealers and collectors having dealt with the Nazis, especially Theodor Fischer of the Fischer Gallery who in 1939 managed the sale of confiscated ‘degenerate artworks’.

Cooper was particularly proud to have found and arrested Charles Montag, one of Hitler’s art advisers, who had assembled a private art collection of mostly stolen items for the Fuhrer and was involved in the liquidation of the Paris gallery Bernheim-Jeune; surprisingly, Montag was quickly released. Cooper arrested him again immediately, only to see him set free once again, due to Montag’s good connections to Winston Churchill, who refused to believe that his longtime friend and teacher ‘good old Montag’ could have done anything objectionable. After WWII, Cooper returned to England and then moved to southern France, where in 1950 he bought the Château de Castille near Avignon, a suitable place to show his impressive art collection. Chateau de Castille was nearly as good as Bluglass’s art gallery, Compton Verney.

Entrance colonnade at the Chateau de Castille, Argilliers:

Picasso was a regular guest at Cooper’s home and became a substantial part of life there. Cooper became a substantial promoter of Picasso. In 1950 Cooper became acquainted with art historian John Richardson shared his life with him until in 1960 Richardson left Cooper and moved to New York City.

Douglas Cooper was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford, 1957-58 and guest Professor at Bryn Mawr and Courthauld Institute in 1961. He is an important figure among art experts of the 20th century although he was controversial, standing accused not only of plagiarism and inaccuracies in his works, but also of ‘flexible ethics’ and ‘cultivating quarrels as much as friends’. In the 1950s, Cooper attacked the Tate Gallery Director John Rothenstein, mostly for not supporting Modern Art, trying to get him dismissed. He even managed to anger Picasso so much that he excluded him from his circle and surroundings after he pressed Picasso around 1970 to legalize his children.

In 1961, Cooper was found on a road outside Nimes, heavily injured by stab wounds in the stomach. On his way to the post office in Nîmes to send an article about Picasso’s birthday to a London newspaper, he had stopped at a notorious quarter and picked up a young Algerian resistance fighter against the French occupation forces who had been interned in an open camp nearby. They drove to a lonely area, where according to Cooper, the boy drew a knife and required Cooper’s money or his life. Cooper was stabbed several times, pushed his intestines back in and dragged himself towards the city. Cooper’s training as a medic proved very useful; against all odds, his cries for help in that lonely area were finally heard, so he could be saved, although he had lost much blood and his intestines were heavily damaged. When the culprit was arrested he claimed to have been resisting a sexual assault.

In 1974, about 20 small paintings were stolen from Cooper’s house; Cooper dismissed his old housekeeper and in consequence lost all respect from the neighbours. Afterwards, he relocated to Monte Carlo, mainly for safety reasons, where he led a rather secluded life. Both incidents were reported by major English and French newspapers.

Cooper died on 1 April 1984 – Fools’ Day. He left his art collection to his adopted son William McCarty Cooper, having adopted him according to French law, in order that nobody else would inherit anything, in particular not his family. His written legacy is kept at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA.

Cooper’s partner Sir John Patrick Richardson ran Christie’s US office for nine years after he left Cooper and France and was in 1995 appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University. When he was young Richardson became a friend of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Among Richardson’s books were The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Picasso, Provence and Douglas Cooper (1999) and Sacred Monsters, Sacred Masters: Beaton, Capote, Dalí, Picasso, Freud, Warhol, and More (2001).

The art historian Sir Anthony Blunt lectured at the Courthauld Institute from 1933 and was Director, 1947-74. For 27 years from 1945 Blunt was Surveyor of the King’s Pictures and later, after the death of King George VI, the Queen’s Pictures, in charge of the Royal Collection, one of the largest and richest collections of art in the world. Blunt’s contribution was vital in the expansion of the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, which opened in 1962. Blunt was also the National Trust’s picture adviser. Notable students who were influenced by Blunt include Nicholas Serota, Baroness Serota’s son.

Blunt was a third cousin of the Queen Mum, Gawd Bless ‘Er. On occasions, Blunt and his two brothers, Christopher and Wilfrid, took afternoon tea at the Bowes-Lyons’ London home at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair, the birthplace of Lilibet.

At Cambridge, Blunt was a member of the Cambridge Apostles. In 1940, when serving with British Army Intelligence Corps, Blunt was recruited by MI5 and was later outed as a double agent working for the KGB. It is acknowledged that some people knew that Blunt was a double agent years before he was publicly named. In 1948, demobilised army officer Philip Hay attended an interview at Buckingham Palace for the post of Private Secretary to the Dowager Duchess of Kent. After passing Blunt in a corridor, Sir Alan Lascelles, the King’s Private Secretary, told Hay: ‘That’s our Russian spy’. The KGB suspected Blunt of being a triple agent.

With the defection of Burgess and Maclean to Moscow in May 1951, Blunt came under suspicion. He and Burgess had been friends since Cambridge. Blunt was interrogated by MI5 in 1952, but gave away little, if anything. Blunt was greatly distressed by Burgess’s flight and, on 28 May 1951, confided in his friend Goronwy Rees, who had briefly supplied the Soviets with political information in 1938–39. Goronwy Rees was appointed Principal of Aberystwyth University in 1953, when it was choc full of the paedophiles’ friends (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

In 1963, MI5 learned of Blunt’s espionage from an American, Michael Straight, whom he had recruited. Blunt confessed to MI5 on 23 April 1964, and Lilibet was informed shortly thereafter. Blunt also gave up John Cairncross, Peter Ashby, Brian Symon and Leonard Henry (Leo) Long as spies. Long had also been a member of the Communist Party and an undergraduate at Trinity College, Cambridge. During WWII he served in MI14 military intelligence in the War Office, with responsibility for assessing German offensive plans. Long passed analyses, but not original material, relating to the Eastern Front, to Blunt.

In return for Blunt’s full confession, the British Gov’t agreed to keep his spying career an official secret for fifteen years and granted him full immunity from prosecution. According to the memoir of MI5 officer Peter Wright, Wright had regular interviews with Blunt from 1964 onward for six years. Prior to that, he had a briefing with Michael Adeane, the Queen’s Private Secretary, who told Wright: ‘From time to time you may find Blunt referring to an assignment he undertook on behalf of the Palace – a visit to Germany at the end of the war. Please do not pursue this matter. Strictly speaking, it is not relevant to considerations of national security.’

Blunt’s life was little affected. In 1966, two years after his secret confession, Noel Annan, then provost of King’s College, Cambridge, held a dinner party for Labour Home Secretary Woy, Ann Fleming, widow of author Ian Fleming and Victor Rothschild and his wife Tess. The Rothschilds brought their friend and lodger – Blunt. All had had wartime connections with British Intelligence; Woy at Bletchley Park.

Nerdy readers of this blog will recognise the names of Adeane, Noel Annan, Woy and Ian Fleming as having featured in previous posts and being among those who knew about the activities of Sir Peter Morrison and Dafydd and the paedophiles.

On 15 Nov 1979 in the Commons, Thatch revealed Blunt’s wartime role and then in more detail on 21 November. Sir Bernard Ingham, Thatcher’s Press Secretary, suggested, ‘I believe she did it because she didn’t see why the system should cover things up. This was early in her prime ministership. I think she wanted to tell the civil service that the politicians decide policy, not the system. She wanted them to know who was boss’.

Thatch was of course at that time covering up Peter Morrison, Dafydd and the rest of them as well as their very serious crimes and continued covering it all up until the day that the old cow pegged out in the Ritz.

Thatch also covered up whatever was going on at the Kincora Boys’ Home in Belfast – the British state is still refusing to hold a full and open investigation into Kincora. What is known is that Kincora was used as the basis of a paedophile ring which supplied boys to the elite. Anthony Blunt and Mountbatten have been consistently named as two people who visited Kincora.

In a statement to the media on 20 November 1979, Blunt claimed the decision to grant him immunity from prosecution was taken by the then PM, Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

Although Blunt was outwardly calm, the sudden exposure in 1979 shocked him. His former pupil, art critic Brian Sewell, said at the time, ‘He was so businesslike about it; he considered the implications for his knighthood and academic honours and what should be resigned and what retained. What he didn’t want was a great debate at his clubs, the Athenaeum and the Travellers. He was incredibly calm about it all.’

The Athenaeum is the club favoured by Top Doctors and academics. Jimmy Savile was a member, after being introduced to the club by Cardinal Basil Hume (see post ‘Additional Security Measures’). It was over an informal meeting at the Atheneaum involving Savile, Alan Franey and some of Civil Service mandarins named earlier in this post that Savile was offered a senior role in the management of Broadmoor (see post ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’).

Lilibet stripped Blunt of his knighthood. Then a few years later she gave one to Peter Morrison.

Lilibet, do you think that you may perhaps have made a few misjudgements regarding all this business involving gay spies, paedophiles and honours?

Dr Dafydd Alun Jones
MI5 – I do keep telling you, just recruit a load of service users. They will do a far better job than a bunch of greedy old paedophiles with Royal connections. Oh, I forgot – you’ve allowed the Top Docs to kill most of them.

During the Lords debate on Ely Hospital, Lord Segal admitted that ‘These conditions have been known to exist for quite a long time in the past, and have given rise to an enormous amount of uneasiness. Also, may I say how much the statement made by the Minister, that the Government intend to take drastic action in this matter, will be generally welcomed? May I stress also the urgency for some action to be taken to remedy the appalling conditions which she has described? In this connection I would emphasise the need for a special training for nurses who are on the staff of these institutions. Special recognition should be given to the difficult conditions under which they work, and, particularly, some adjustment should be made in the matter of their pay in order to recruit the proper type of nurse for these institutions. Furthermore, may I say how important it is that some proper channel should exist for the laying of complaints, when such complaints are known to exist, to see that they are not brushed aside in the future as they have been, most unfortunately, in the past?’

So not only did Lord Segal know what was going on in such institutions but he also knew that complaints were being ignored and that the ‘training’ of the Angels was crap.

Dafydd et al in north Wales stressed constantly the ‘expertise’ of the Top Doctors and the ‘trained nurses’. There were some nurses at Denbigh who definitely would have been capable of doing a good job in the right situation and one or two of them were actually very nice, it was the Top Docs who were very obviously the biggest problem. However there were a few Angels – the ones in senior positions – who lied, including on oath and abused their positions as well as the patients. A small number of Angels were uneducated, thick and crude and very obviously inhabited a base, brutal world. The conversations between them would have horrified members of the Lords – crude sexual comments about the rest of the world and the people whom they were paid to care for and a social life which involved drinking vast amounts and not much else. The biggest laugh was that they too were convinced that they’d been ‘trained’ and would brag about their proud ‘training’ at every possibility. It didn’t register with them that a small number of their patients had postgrad qualifications because most of them weren’t interested enough in the patients to even think about that – but if it did sink in they would feel incredibly threatened by a well-educated patient. The liberal elite those Angels were not.

Lord Samuel Segal was another Top Doc and a remarkably honest one, but it would seem only during this Lords debate. Samuel Segal was born in Oxford in 1902 to a scholarly Jewish household and moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1909 with his family. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Jesus College, Oxford and Westminster Hospital. He was a casualty Surgeon at Westminster Hospital then a Senior Clinical Assistant at Great Ormond Street Hospital and he served on several London County Council Hospital Committees.

Following the start of WWII, Segal joined RAFVR Medical Branch in October 1939. He served in Aden in 1940, Western Desert in 1941, Syrian Campaign in 1941. Segal was attached to the Greek Air Force, 1941; Squadron Leader, 1942; Senior Medical Officer RAF Naval Co-operation Group in Mediterranean, 1942. He was on the Headquarters Staff Middle East, 1943–44 and the Air Ministry Medical Staff, 1944-45.

Segal was a regional medical officer for the Ministry of Health, 1951-62.

At the 1945 General Election, Segal was elected as the Labour MP for Preston. He advised Nye Bevan on the attitudes of Top Doctors to the creation of the NHS in 1948. The Top Doctors were of course nearly all totally opposed to the creation of the NHS and Bevan famously was only able to overcome their resistance by stuffing their mouths with gold (see post ‘The History, Boys…’). What is less well-publicised is the shocking medical misconduct that would also be ignored as part of the deal…

Samuel Segal spoke against Gov’t policy in Palestine and in favour of the creation of Israel. The Preston constituency was abolished for the 1950 General Election and Segal stood for the new Preston North seat, but lost by 938 votes to the Conservative candidate, Julian Amery.

On 18 December 1964, Segal was created a life peer. In the Lords, he was Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairman of Committees from 1973-82.

Lord Segal was Chairman of the British Association for the Retarded, the National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children (now Mencap). The mentally handicapped residents of Bryn-y-Neuadd, the long-stay hospital in Llanfairfechan were described to me as ‘vegetables’ by one of the senior managers of Bryn-y-Neuadd who was on the interview panel to appoint an advocate for the vegetables. The vegetables at Bryn-y-Neuadd were helped to explore their ‘sexual needs’ by Ann Craft, who also ‘supported them’ in their sexual relationships. Anne later bagged a senior job at Nottingham University and became a recognised authority on Empowering The Vegetables.

Ann Craft was married to Top Doctor Michael Craft. The Crafts conducted research with Dafydd and discovered during that research that there was a very high rate of incest among the forebears of the vegetables. See post ‘The Old Devils’. Many of the vegetables in Bryn-y-Neuadd had trouble communicating – the place had such a dreadful reputation that most people who had a vegetable preferred to grow them at home rather than hand them over to the Angels of Bryn-y-Neuadd, so it tended to be the most severely disabled vegetables who ended up there – so how the Crafts and Dafydd discovered the sexual habits of the vegetables’ ancestors I’d be interested to know. I haven’t been able to find any published outputs regarding the gardening that was undertaken by Dafydd and the Crafts, I suspect that there was none.

However, a helpful reader has sent me extracts from a 1965 book by Dr Michael Craft, entitled ‘Ten Studies Into Psychopathic Personality’. Most of the studies of the psychopaths simply describe people who when young children were kept in the hen house or in the attic or who had severely distressed parents who couldn’t look after them and shut them in rooms and didn’t talk to them etc. These abused and neglected kids had been labelled psychopaths by the age of 10 and had then been handed over to the likes of Dafydd et al. Craft’s masterpiece was subtitled ‘A Report to the Home Office and the Mental Health Research Fund’. So Craft’s idiocy was probably commissioned by the Home Office when Lord of the Rings Henry Brooke was Home Secretary. The Home Secretary who accepted Dr Craft’s pearls and presumably used them to formulate policy was one Woy Jenkins, who did a great many favours for Dafydd and the paedophiles, as did Woy’s fellow travellers Dr Death, Shirl and Bill Rodgers (see post ‘We’ve Been Expecting You…’).

One chapter in Craft’s book is entitled ‘The Case of Gwyn’. Should that not have been ‘The Case Of Gwynne’? Even Michael Craft could not have got to the bottom (so to speak) of The Case Of Dafydd, that would be a source of even more debate and contestation than Freud’s Case Of Dora.

Tony Francis had a secretary called Dora Carter who made false allegations about Brown to the police and tried to have him arrested, but that’s another story…

I warned you Top Docs, I have lots more documents that have not yet received a mention on this blog.

For further details regarding Michael and Ann Craft and their pioneering efforts to sexually liberate those incarcerated by a gang of sex offenders in north Wales, see post ‘The Old Devils’.

Lord Segal was also the Chairman of the Anglo-Irish Association and the Anglo-Israel Archeological Association. He was a governor of the now closed Jewish boarding school Carmel College and life governor of Manchester College.

Lord Segal died in 1985. His legacy lives on… As do his offspring…

Baroness Summerskill was rather braver than the other Lords. In the Ely Hospital debate she commented that ‘I am afraid I cannot agree with my noble friend when she suggests that we might receive this Report without comment. I believe that every time an inquiry of this kind is made it is much better for the helpless individuals in these institutions to have people in both Houses of Parliament who are prepared to ask questions again and again…some of us who have been in Parliament for many years have lived through this kind of moment, time after time. It is always suggested that we should read the Report and see what is in it. By the time we have read the Report other things are happening and people forget to ask questions at what I consider to be the relevant moment – now. What I want to ask my noble friend is this: is she aware that what she said just now applies to similar institutions throughout the country, in so far as the staff [whistleblowers] are intimidated? My noble friend said that two members of the staff were dismissed, or left, because they questioned the system: their questioning was unpopular, and therefore they were dismissed.’

Baroness Summerskill continued:

‘What I should like to know, in view of this Inquiry and of the Statement which has just been made, is what general inquiry is now going to be set afoot by her Department in order to see how far the conditions in this institution apply in others. Unless somebody from outside goes in, questions the management committees and generally makes a fuss, the conditions which she describes now and which have obviously been existing in this institution for years can go on in other institutions of which we have no knowledge. Therefore, my question to her is this- and I have faith in her Department, now that she is in this job, because she is a woman and has compassion. My noble friend at the back groans. I am afraid it is true that women have a little more compassion in these matters than, perhaps, some of the men. May I ask my noble friend whether she will see to it that her Department makes a general inquiry with regard to the administration of homes and institutions which are organised for the old and the sick? Because it is in these places that the patients are completely helpless.’

I cannot agree with Baroness Summerskill that women by their nature have more compassion in such matters than men. Institutions like Ely and Denbigh always employed a few women in senior positions simply in order to reassure everyone that abuse could not be taking place within because there was a woman in charge. Those women were every bit as callous and corrupt as their male colleagues and they knew damn well that their possession of ovaries was being ruthlessly used to give the stamp of approval to very troubled institutions doing terrible things. After all, Lucille Hughes was Director of Gwynedd Social Services…

Women who were not as callous or corrupt but who were simply overwhelmed by the absolute bastards who surrounded them would be wheeled out to meet visiting VIPs or the press to give a good impression. Sister Ella Fisk fulfilled this role at the Hergest Unit and an Angel called Ingrid did it in Bryn Golau Ward at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. Ella was actually very nice and was ignored and trampled over by the most appalling people who were abusing patients, yet if a visiting Councillor or politician turned up to visit, it would be Ella who would be called upon to meet them, because everyone knew that some of the other staff would leave such a terrible impression. Furthermore Ella was the Angel who would be ORDERED by Dafydd, Tony Francis et al to report patients to the police and if necessary lie about the ‘danger’ that they presented when the Top Docs wanted to fit those patients up. Ella just did not have enough clout in that organisation to challenge the people traffickers with whom she worked. I also suspect that she was very frightened of them. She and her husband Clive both worked at Ysbyty Gwynedd, they’d have been finished if they had resisted. Clive was a senior technician at Ysbyty Gwynedd, he will have known that some of the equipment wasn’t working, yet patients would be hooked up to monitors etc and no-one would admit the real situation.

It was Ingrid who, after Dafydd ordered the Angels to take me to a railway station, put me on a train to London and told me that if I ever returned to north Wales again I would be arrested, was one of those who drove me to the station and put me on the train (see post ‘Rivers Of Blood’). There were other more junior Angels who came with us as well, but I cannot remember who they were. When I finally managed to get an investigation into my complaint about Dafydd et al – although it was simply one enormous cover-up conducted by Dafydd’s mates (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’) – Ingrid was, I was told, one member of staff who refused to attend the hearing, although according to Bluglass, the ‘investigating panel’ were desperate to question her. But then they were all a bunch of liars running a trafficking gang so who knows what the truth was.

Baroness Edith Summerskill was a Top Doctor, writer, feminist and Labour politician. Edith Summerskill was educated at King’s College London and trained as a Top Doc at Charing Cross. Edith was a genuine pioneer, she was one of the first women to be admitted to medical school. She was one of the founders of the Socialist Health Association, she pressed for equal rights for women in the Home Guard and in 1938 she initiated the Married Women’s Association to promote equality in marriage and became its first President.

Summerskill entered politics at the age of 32 when she was asked to fight the Green Lanes ward in Harringay in the Middlesex County Council elections. She then served as a Councillor on Middlesex County Council, 1934-41. Edith became the Labour MP for Fulham West thanks to the working women’s vote. She caused some disquiet by taking the seat in her maiden name. When the Fulham West constituency was abolished for the 1955 General Election, she was returned to the Commons as MP for Warrington, a seat that she held until 1961.

Summerskill served in Attlee’s Labour Gov’t following the election victory in 1945, including in the Ministry of Social and National Insurance, heading the Dept although she was not a Cabinet Minister.

As well as her service in government, Summerskill also served on the Commons Political Honours Scrutiny Committee, 1967 -76.

Summerskill was a member of the Labour Party’s NEC, 1944-58 and served as Chair of the Labour Party 1954-55. She left the Commons in 1961 and was given a peerage.

Summerskill was a member of the Fabian Society in the 1940s and as an active feminist, she was instrumental in promoting women’s causes throughout that period, starting with the Clean Milk Act in 1949. Later, as the President of the Married Women’s Association, she campaigned in and outside of Parliament to assure the equal rights of housewives and of divorced women, which resulted in the Married Women’s Property Act in 1964 and the Matrimonial Homes Act in 1967.

I have a great deal more respect for the likes of Edith Summerskill than I do for people like Harriet because Edith Summerskill really did do many things that at the time were usually the preserve of men. However, Edith will have had feet of clay. Not only was there an absence of any sense on her part that she had achieved because she was from a privileged strata of society – she was the daughter of a Top Doctor and as a child accompanied him on his rounds and of course she married a Top Doctor – but she knew that some seriously grim things were happening to less privileged people, including at the hands of her and her colleagues, which she did not challenge. For most posh women of Edith’s generation, emancipation was about emancipating other posh women.

Edith was a real hero to many and I suspect that it was partly because when she was younger she looked absolutely wonderful. When compared to the gross old paedophiles who cluttered up Parliament at the time, Edith must have seemed a pretty good advert.

Like Vera Brittain, Edith was a true shatterer of glass ceilings who had a mediocre daughter who cashed in on her mum and gave the old paedophiles of Parliament a great deal of assistance. The mediocre daughters even both had the same name. Edith’s notions that women were not simply equal to men but actually superior in every way were famously published as the 1957 volume ‘Letters To My Daughter’. I do wonder whether Edith had to revise her ideas on natural female superiority when she later took a long hard look at the daughter to whom those letters were written.

Edith’s daughter Shirley Summerskill was also a Labour politician who made much of being a female Top Doctor at a time when that was rather more unusual than it is today, although not the flying pig phenomenon that it was when her mum qualified. Shirley inherited the gene for becoming a big name in the Labour Party and the gene for being a Woman Top Doctor from her mum. Shirley Summerskill was educated at St Paul’s School, Somerville College, Oxford, as were many other female breakers of glass ceilings, including Thatch and of course the other delusional Shirley. Here she is, telling the rest of us what is best for us:

Regius Professorship Lecture (15648721150).jpg

Shirley Summerskill trained as a Top Doctor at the medical school for the poshest, Tommy’s, through who’s hands Dr Death also passed just a few years later. The Tommy’s which was facilitating abuse and employing Dafydd’s mates as well as the lethal William Sargant who’s experiments killed some patients, including during the years when Dr Death was working as his research registrar (see post ‘Dr Death’) and performing illegal abortions like there was no tomorrow if the patients had the dosh for the backhanders (see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’). Tommy’s Top Doctors were pretty liberal with the prescription pad as well if one had the cash.

Summerskill was a member of the Executives of the Socialist Medical Association and the Medical Practitioners’ Union. By this time, both of these were organisations that attracted highly paid, privileged Top Docs who very often for reasons of their aspirations to become big names in the Labour Party pretended to Care About The Poor and thus were Committed To The NHS eg. Dr Brian Gibbons, Ed Miliband’s Uncle Harry, Dr John Dunwoody and Dr Julian Tudor Spart as well as many others who protected Dafydd who have featured on this blog.

One of the early members of the Socialist Medical Association (which later changed its name to the Socialist Health Association) along with Shirley Summerskill’s mum Edith was Sir Richard Doll. Doll famously demonstrated the link between smoking and lung cancer and is the biggest name in 20th century epidemiology.

However the glue which adheres the Top Doctors together really is most impressive. My post ‘They Think It’s All Over – It Is Now’ described a laughable piece of ‘cancer research’ conducted by the paedophiles’ friends of Ysbyty Gwynedd and Bangor University, which was published in 1990, when Dafydd and the gang were sending out distress signals like there was no tomorrow and were in need of good PR. The ground-breaking research received full media coverage on a world-wide scale, but just weeks later a retraction had to be issued when it was admitted that there were ‘flaws’ in the research. The flaws were enormous – the control sample had numbered three, one of the controls was not someone who was suffering from the type of cancer which was being studied anyway and a number of conclusions had been drawn which could not have been, even if there had been an appropriate control group. Sir Richard Doll had ‘advised’ on this research. Why Sir Richard Doll wasted his time and energy with this gang of fools who were wheeled out to save the bacon of Dafydd et al I don’t know. Not that publishing laughable ‘research’ which was discredited within weeks did the careers of the ‘researchers’ any harm. Two of the authors, Chris and Rhiannon Whitaker, – the statisticians who OK’d a control sample of three, one of whom was suffering with a different condition –  continued their careers as stats lecturers at Bangor University and Rhiannon ended up leading the North Wales Clinical Trials Unit…

Shirley Summerskill was elected as the Labour MP for Halifax in Jimmy Savile country in the 1964 General Election. After being a Labour Shadow Minister for Health, 1970-74, she served as a junior Minister in the Home Office throughout the 1974–79 Labour Gov’t, under two Home Secretaries, Woy and Merlyn Rees. During those years, the Labour Gov’t afforded full protection to Dafydd’s gang and to the molester George Thomas and ensured that Thomas’s friend and protector the bent lawyer and MP Leo Abse saw his baby the Children Act 1974 hit the statute books, thus ensuring that hundreds of children were removed from their families and sent to live with Dafydd’s gang as well as other linked gangs (see post ‘Cry, The Beloved Country’).

In 1980 Summerskill was interviewed by BBC’s ‘Panorama’ about Britain’s preparations for a nuclear attack. This was a woman who throughout her entire medical and political career was unable to say boo to a Dafydd and certainly not on ‘Panorama’, because Dafydd’s mate from Llangollen, Elwyn Parry Jones, was Deputy Editor of ‘Panorama’, 1977-85.Roger Waters | Music fanart | fanart.tv

  • When Labour returned to opposition in 1979, Shirley Summerskill became an opposition spokesperson on Home Affairs. She lost her seat in 1983 to the Tory Roy Galley.

Sumerskill married lawyer and future Labour MP John Ryman in 1957; they divorced in 1971. I am very impressed with Shirley in that she married a fine example of a Cad. John Ryman QC was easily as good as the son of Lord Bellamy on ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ who made one of the servants pregnant.

Ryman was a barrister and an enthusiastic fox-hunter who was elected as Labour MP for Blyth, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in Oct 1974. In 1976 Ryman’s agent was fined £400 under the Representation of the People Act 1949 and the Perjury Act 1911 for falsifying his election expenses return and overspending, although the election result stood. In 1986, Ryman announced that he was leaving the Labour Party and sat as an Independent until he retired at the 1987 General Election.

On 23 April 1992 Ryman was convicted of defrauding two women of their life savings. He had pretended to be the Director of a Swiss Bank and told the women that they would get 22·5% interest, but in fact paid the money to his ex-wife for maintenance payments. Ryman was given a two and a half year jail sentence.

Ryman and Summerskill had married in 1957 but had divorced by the time he entered Parliament. He was married five times in all. He claimed to have invested some money belonging to his fifth wife Nicola, a wealthy widow, in a high-yield Swiss bank account but in fact squandered the money on a horse, Jaguar car and holidays on the Orient Express. He had previously narrowly escaped being prosecuted by the family of a mistress whose money he had also claimed to have invested in a Swiss account.

When I read about The Cad I presumed that Edith would have had to have revised her theories about women being more intelligent than men, what with her daughter having been taken in. But I suppose that The Cad would have confirmed Edith’s low opinion of those in possession of testicles – they’re hopeless.

Not long after Dafydd did his best Rhett Butler bit, a Hergest patient told Dafydd that he was a ‘failure as a sex fiend’.

‘We didn’t know.’

The saddest element to the adventures of The Cad who married Shirley Summerskill was the means by which he was elected for Blythe in 1974. Blythe had previously been represented by Labour member Eddie Milne, since 1960. Eddie had succeeded the crooked old git Alfred – Lord – Robens, who became Chairman of NCB and was up to his eyes in it re the Aberfan Disaster in 1966. It was Robens who took the hit for Aberfan in order to get a great many other Good Labour Men off the hook, who were as much to blame (see post ‘Include Me Out’). Eddie Milne, a trade union official, was selected by the local constituency Labour Party to replace Robens, with the help of USDAW.

During his Parliamentary career, Milne became increasingly concerned about problems of endemic corruption within local government in the north east of England. The scale of these were eventually revealed in the Poulson Affair involving corruption and the leading Labour movement figure T. Dan Smith. Known as ‘a difficult man to get on with’ – perhaps because he wasn’t a crook like the rest of them? –  Milne’s problems were not restricted to his opponents in the local Labour Party; he twice unsuccessfully reported a local journalist, Jim Harland, to the Press Council over articles he had written.

By 1974 the breach between Milne and the local party was ‘irreparable’ and he was deselected on the eve of the Feb 1974 General Election. Milne had already made preparations for this eventuality and ran a campaign as an Independent Labour candidate. He overturned the Labour majority and defeated Ivor Richard, who had the official endorsement, by 6,140 votes. However, it was a short-lived victory, as Milne was narrowly defeated in the Oct 1974 General Election by The Cad by 78 votes. Milne’s supporters who won seats on the local authority had all been defeated by 1979; when Milne stood again in the 1979 General Election he did badly.

Milne wrote a book entitled No Shining Armour (1976) detailing his travails with the local party, and giving his view on the corruption scandals of the 1970s. It attracted 36 libel writs, and the costs and damages associated with it came close to bankrupting his publishers.

So the constituency of Blythe – now called Blythe Valley – gave an honest MP the boot and ended up with The Cad, who had previously been married to a woman who spent her career concealing a gang of paedophiles. Of course, one of the gangs of paedophiles which Shirley Summerskill concealed was the gang in the north east, which was closely associated with Dafydd et al in north Wales. The year before the year in which The Cad was elected for Blythe, Matt Arnold and Peter Howarth relocated from Axwell Park Approved School in Gateshead, where children had been abused, to Bryn Estyn, where they really stoked up the gang run by Dafydd et al… The children’s homes of north Wales received hundreds of children in the care of local authorities in the north east of England. See previous posts.

The paedophile gang in the north east was linked to the local authority corruption involving Poulson et al (see post ‘So Who Was Angry About What?’), but even Eddie Milne didn’t dare mention that.

The MP who succeeded The Cad for Blythe Valley was Labour’s Ronnie Cambell, who still holds the seat. I’ll be blogging about you soon Ronnie!

Shirley Summerskill’s nephew, Ben Summerskill, was Chief Executive of the UK gay equality charity Stonewall, 2003-2014. Stonewall gave the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board an award for being an LGBT-friendly employer some two years ago. Which left me quite surprised because I know one young gay man who did a placement when he was a student nurse at the Hergest Unit who dared raise concerns about the abuse of patients, only to find himself the subject of crude, homophobic bullying.

Lord Shackleton made a brief contribution to the Ely Hospital Lords debate, just to express the view that in discussing the Ely Report the House was becoming ‘seriously out of order’, because some members had been rather harsh with their words in response to the Report. Lord Edward Shackleton was the son of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Edward Shackleton arranged the 1932 Oxford University Exploration Club expedition to Sarawak in Borneo. During this trip he was the first to attain the peak of Mount Mulu. In 1934 Shackleton organised the Oxford University Ellesmere Land Expedition. Shackleton accompanied the party as the assistant surveyor. The expedition was eventually responsible for naming Mount Oxford (after the University of Oxford) and the British Empire Range. On leaving university, Shackleton worked for the BBC in N Ireland – an experience that turned him away from the Conservative Party towards Labour.

In 1946, Shackleton was elected as Labour MP for Preston. A boundary change subsequently divided Preston into two seats and Shackleton was elected MP for Preston South on a much reduced majority. Shackleton served as PPS to the Lord President of the Council and Foreign Secretary in Attlee’s Gov’t, Mandy’s grandfather, Herbert Morrison. Shackleton was re-elected in 1951. One duty of the Lord President of the Council is to act as the visitor for the University of Wales.

In 1955, Shackleton was defeated and so Hugh Gaitskell recommended Shackleton to the PM and he was created a life peer. In Wilson’s Gov’t Shackleton served as Minister of Defence, 1964–67. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1966 and made Deputy Leader of the House of Lords a year later. As Minister without Portfolio 1967–1968 and Paymaster General in 1968 Shackleton had a seat on the cabinet. During the Aden Crisis he was sent on a Special Mission as British Resident to help with the withdrawal.

Shackleton was Leader of the Lords, 1968–70, and subsequently sat as Opposition Leader in the Lords. He was used again on the Wilsonian reforms proposed for the Lords, liaising between committees and sub-committees, designed to reduce the Lords delaying powers from two years to just six months, but the PM dropped the bill in April 1969 to ‘concentrate on priorities.’ Sitting on the Committee for Civil Service Reform, Shackleton successfully widened access to entry for scientists.

From 1971, Shackleton was President of the Royal Geographical Society. From 1976 until 1992 he was Chairman of the joint-Political Honours and Scrutiny Committee. Lord Shackleton also wrote a Report, commissioned by James Callaghan, which described the economic future of the Falkland Islands, the value of the being British to the islanders and how their lot could be improved. It included the invaluable role eventually played by HMS Endurance.

Between 1988-89, Shackleton Chaired the Lords Science and Technology Committee, which culminated in 1989 when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He also served as Chairman of the East European Trade Council.

Lord Shackleton was Pro-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, an institution who’s medical school hosted a number of those who were providing a big umbrella for Dafydd et al (see post ‘Professor Prestigious And His Associates’).

Shackleton acted also as Patron of the British Schools Exploring Society (B.S.E.S.) from 1962 until his death in 1994.

Edward Shackleton will have known Sir Charles Evans, Principal of UCNW, 1957-84 and probably other employees of UCNW as a result of Shackleton’s friendships with people involved in exploring, climbing and natural history. Charles Evans was a member of the 1953 Everest expedition and although his first career was as a neurosurgeon in Oxford and then Liverpool, Evans was far more interested in climbing (see previous posts). However, Evans’s status as a national hero after the successful Everest ascent – with members of the Everest team who worked for the security services – afforded Dafydd et al who were facilitating their trafficking ring through UCNW complete protection.

Lord Ogmore pointed out to the Lords that he was the only Welshman to speak on the matter of Ely, which primarily concerned Wales and remarked ‘may I ask the noble Baroness whether she is aware that this Report will be regarded with the utmost seriousness in Wales, and that Welsh people will want to know that there are no other institutions where the same conditions might already apply? May I also ask her whether, when her right honourable friend has discussed the whole question of Ely Hospital with the Chairman of the Hospital Board, a further report or statement will be made to Parliament, conveying to Members the results of that interview between the two gentlemen concerned?’

Of course there were other institutions in Wales in which conditions as bad as those in Ely prevailed – there was the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, which was far worse. Furthermore Bryn-y-Neuadd at Llanfairfechan and Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff were pretty bad, as well as a few others… It really wasn’t any secret.

David Rees Rees-Williams, 1st Baron Ogmore was born in Bridgend and qualified as a solicitor in 1929. He served in the Welch Regiment and the Royal Artillery and ended WWII as a Lieutenant Colonel. Rees-Williams was elected Labour MP for Croydon South in 1945. In the Gov’t he was a Minister in the Colonial Office, travelling to East Asia to consider the movements towards independence. Rees-Williams’s seat was redistributed at the end of the Parliament and he narrowly lost the successor seat in 1950, so he received the standard booby prize of a life peerage. He served as Minister of Civil Aviation in 1951 and was made a Privy Councillor the same year. Lord Ogmore was President of the London Welsh Trust, which runs the London Welsh Centre, Gray’s Inn Road, 1955-59. The London Welsh Trust was a magnet for those colluding with Dafydd and the paedophiles (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Lord Ogmore joined the Liberal Party in 1959 and served as Liberal Party President, 1963–1964. Lord Ogmore was among those who ignored Jeremy Thorpe’s Ugandan activities. Lord Ogmore’s constituency was just down the road from Warlingham Park Hospital which had a dreadful reputation and was eventually subject to an Ely-like damning investigation which resulted in staff going to prison for very serious offences against patients. My post ‘A Trade In People – Between London And North Wales’ details the horrendous abuse and fleecing – by a group of crooked Top Docs and lawyers in London with links to colleagues in Bethesda – of a family who’s lives were destroyed by Warlingham Park Hospital after their mum died in suspicious circumstances when an in-patient there and were then sent to live in Bethesda by the crooks who shafted them.

Lord Ogmore was married to Alice Alexandra Constance Wills and had three children. His daughter, Elizabeth Rees-Williams, married the actors Richard Harris and Sir Rex Harrison, the businessman Peter Aitken, and more recently Jonathan Aitken, the former Tory MP and old flame of Carol Thatcher’s who later went to prison for perjury. Lord Ogmore’s grandsons are actors Jared Harris and Jamie Harris and Director Damian Harris.

Sir Rex Harrison starred in the award winning film ‘Dr Dolittle’. Two days a week, no on-call and retirement at 55 yrs old. Duw it’s hard.

Lord Silkin found himself in a particularly difficult position in the Lords: ‘before we discuss this matter further, we ought to read the Report. I should like to put a question to the noble Baroness, and I put it because I was for many years both chairman and a member of a number of hospital management committees; and it seems to me inconceivable that a hospital management committee should not have known of what had been going on apparently for a long time. Certainly I should like to think that it could not have happened in the case of the hospitals with which I was concerned; and if a management committee is doing its job properly, it ought not to have happened in this case. May I ask the noble Baroness whether, in the Report, there is any reference to the activities of the Hospital Management Committee?’

Bit close to home there Lord Silkin! Of course the Hospital Management Committee at Ely knew, it was they who ignored the complaints and got rid of the whistleblowers.

Lewis Silkin, 1st Baron Silkin worked as a solicitor (Lewis Silkin LLP, the London law firm where he practised, still bears his name), before becoming a member of the London County Council in 1925. He Chaired the LCC Town Planning and the Housing and Public Health Committees and was a member of the Central Housing Advisory Committee. Silkin was elected as MP Peckham in 1936. He was Minister of Town and Country Planning in Clement Attlee’s Gov’t, 1945-50.

Silkin was raised to the peerage in 1950. Of his three sons, his eldest, Arthur, a civil servant, disclaimed the peerage. The other two, Samuel and John, both became Labour MPs, members of the Privy Council and Gov’t Ministers. Samuel was MP for Dulwich, 1964-83 and Attorney General for England and Wales as well as N Ireland, 1974-79. You’ve guessed it, Samuel concealed the crimes of the Top Docs and the paedophiles along with everyone else. Being the principled man that he was, Samuel refused a knighthood as AG. He accepted a life peerage instead in 1985, just as the explosions began in north Wales…

Samuel’s son Christopher also disclaimed the hereditary peerage on the death of his uncle Arthur in 2001, the first time a peerage has been disclaimed twice.

John Silkin was Labour MP for Lewisham Deptford, 1963-87. He served in the RNVR, 1942-46, along with the other high profile paedophiles, paedophiles’ friends and spies (see post ‘The Defence Of The Realm’). At one point John Silkin had hopes of becoming Leader of the Labour Party, but that went pear-shaped among all the internal scrapping. The talents of Footie and the Windbag shone through instead. Of course they did, Footie and the Windbag held seats in south Wales so they had all the best shit on George Thomas, the Silkin family only had superior gen on the kids from south London who were being abused and trafficked by Dafydd’s gang and his mates at the Maudsley. See previous posts for further information on the Silkin family.

Baroness Hylton-Foster was firmly on the side of the patient-batterers during the Lords debate: ‘My Lords, may I ask the noble Baroness whether Her Majesty’s Government do not think that this is the moment to recommend that nurses should be moved around more? Because even with special training it needs superhuman patience to cope with some of the patients with whom they have to deal.’

Those patients really were such absolute bastards. They insisted on standing in the way of the flying fists and kicking boots of the Angels, they grew hair which the Angels felt compelled to grab hold of to drag the patients along the corridor and in addition at Ely those patients tried the patience of the Angels so much that the Angels hosed them down with cold water, the Angels just could not take any more.

To make things even harder for the long-suffering staff of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, the attractive younger patients possessed bodies that poor old Dafydd and a few others just couldn’t resist having sex with…

Baroness Hylton-Foster obviously wanted to move the Angels around so that the good practice could be shared, in the way that by the late 1970s, the paedophiles employed in children’s homes across the UK had all networked together and used to shuttle back and forth between different homes in different regions of the country, forming one big happy family.

Audrey Pellew Hylton-Foster, Baroness Hylton-Foster was the daughter of 1st Viscount Ruffside and Violet Cicely Kathleen Wollaston. She married Sir Harry Braustyn Hylton-Foster, who had started a distinguished career at the Bar, in 1931; they were not blessed with children.

Born in India, the Baroness was educated at St George’s, Ascot and Ivy House, Wimbledon. Both her father and husband served as Speaker of the Commons. Audrey Hylton-Foster first lived at Speaker’s House during her father’s time there, when she went to recover from measles. While she was convalescing she started working for the British Red Cross and this, apart from politics, became her life’s work.

During WWII Audrey was an Angel at St Luke’s Hospital, Chelsea. She cycled ‘thousands of miles’ around London on her Red Cross duties. In 1950 she became Director of the Chelsea division of the British Red Cross. She was at various times President, Chairman and Patron of the London branch. In late 1980 she was acting as consultant at the national HQ.

Audrey’s husband began his political career after World War II. By 1950 he was MP for York. He died in office in 1965, after which she was given a peerage. Despite Audrey’s prior objections to women politicians, she became an active member of the Lords and for many years served as Convenor of the Crossbench peers. Like others who have been of particularly valuable service to abusers in high places, Audrey was appointed a Dame in 1990, being only a Baroness not being sufficient thanks for her contribution.

Audrey Hylton-Foster lived in a converted Coach House on Leith Hill in Surrey. Each year she opened her gardens to the public, in order to raise money for various charities. One year, with help from actress Virginia McKenna, a substantial amount was raised for the Born Free Foundation. Mandy Leigh, one of the most monstrous members of staff at St George’s Hospital Medical School – she who had sex with a Top Doctor in the lab and who participated in ‘research’ which involved decapitating marmosets for no good reason and who of course kept schtum about the serious wrongdoing and harm to patients – was a good friend of Virginia McKenna’s family.

One of Mandy’s many pearls of wisdom was that it was often necessary to lie to patients for their own good. Another pearl was that FGM was best done in Harley Street – Mandy told me this when a Top Doc at St George’s admitted that his mate in Harley Street was performing FGM and I reminded him that it had been illegal for years…

And if marmosets are to be decapitated it’s best done by Mandy Leigh at the London Zoo, after lies have been told to the media about the research having been stopped.

Audrey’s Garden Open Day raised funds for a number of good causes including the British Red Cross, Cancer Research, local schools etc. Who knows, perhaps the Institute of Psychiatry benefited as well and funds were raised for a few more primates to be caged while not very useful experiments were carried out on their brains:Dementia’s Terrible Legacy For Her Kids | JenningsWire

Audrey died in 2002, so she was around to help with the fall-out of the Waterhouse Report.

Of course, after the Ely Hospital Scandal, working parties were set up, along with a system of inspections, so that it could never happen again…

I know someone who was a student psych nurse at Ely Hospital at the time of the scandal. He confirmed that the abuse of patients there was terrible and that he was so outraged at seeing an Angel kicking an elderly man down the corridor that he punched the Angel in the face. When he was older this man qualified as a social worker and worked in north Wales, in the field of mental health. He was responsible for, among other things, sectioning people in Denbigh and training the social workers who later worked with the paedophile gang. He was working as a social work lecturer at Coleg Menai in Bangor at the time of the publication of the Waterhouse Report. On the day after publication this lecturer walked into his class and said ‘One thing that will not be discussed today and never will be discussed is the Waterhouse Report’.

‘We didn’t know.’

Oh yes you bloody well did and what’s more, that particular man knew about Robert Bluglass and his corruption as well because he discussed it with me. Geoff Lees later left his post at Coleg Menai and became the Director of Vale Of Clwyd MIND.

See my post ‘Social Work – Theory’ for details of the level of discussion and some of the comments made by the social work students in that class, nearly all of whom qualified and subsequently joined the paedophiles and their friends of north Wales…

Baroness Dame Serota married Stanley Serota, a civil engineer and they had two children. Her son Nicholas became Director of the Tate Gallery and her daughter Judith also pursued a career in the arts. When Nicholas Serota was Director of the Tate, Blair’s mate Richard Rogers was Chairman. Under Serota, the Tate expanded as a result of the conversion of the former Bankside Power Station into Tate Modern, for which the Tate was given £52 million towards. Nicholas I’ve been to the Tate Modern a few times and yes I did enjoy it, but I’m not sure that you should have been given £52 million for it. The current generation of the poor sods of the sort that your mother made a good living out of ignoring probably needed it more. As of 2015, Serota was paid a salary of between £165,000 and £169,999 by the Tate. When Serota was Director of the Tate, he encouraged BP to sponsor the Tate which caused quite an embarrassment at the time of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

Nicholas Serota is currently Director of Arts Council England.

Previous posts and comments on this blog have mentioned Professor Stuart Stanton, a gynaecologist at St George’s Hospital Medical School who specialised in convincing rich, anxious women that they needed pelvic floor surgery. Stanton was reputed to have made a fortune and was hated and feared by even his colleagues who were facilitating child abuse and people trafficking, so I always wondered what is was that Stanton was up to. The corrupt MSF rep David Hole who spent most of his working day trying to dig up dirt or sensitive info on other people which he could then use against them was really busting a gut in his attempts to find out what Stanton was doing but Stanton’s secretary – who was very much more normal than most of the people employed at St George’s – wasn’t giving anything away, although like everyone else who worked with Stanton, she did used to say ‘God I’d never let him operate on me’.

Stanton went to Israel on a very frequent basis and had mistresses out there, but I’m sure that Stanton wasn’t going all that way just to discuss Uganda. I have received info about Stanton’s dreadful treatment of the ladies in his life, but I’m not publishing any of that because they need to be afforded privacy after falling into the jaws of a shark.

This morning someone sent me a few links which mentioned Stuart Stanton. His name appeared on the 2011 list of Trustees of the Jewish Music Institute. Stanton’s biography which appears on the website of the Jewish Music Institute describes Stanton as:

Professor and Consultant Urogynaecologist now in private and medico-legal practice in Central London. He is also a visiting Professor at Hadassah Hospital (Jerusalem) where he travels every three months to lecture, see patients and operate. He is a founder member of the South London Israel Forum (SLIF) which meets monthly to hear speakers on Middle East politics and Israel’s achievements in the Arts and Sciences, also a Trustee for Hadassah UK and a Patron of the British Friends of Hebrew University.

The Vice-Presidents of the Jewish Music Institute were named as my old mate Michael Grade and dear old Greville Janner.

Stanton also appears on the website of the Jewish Medical Association UK. The section entitled ‘Israeli Medical Students’ tells us about the 2011 Israeli Student Attachment programme and that ‘the past four weeks have been incredible. Dr. Alan Naftalin welcomed us with a lovely dinner at his house and took care of all our needs during our stay. In addition, he made sure we learn a lot about medicine and the way it is practiced in the UK by arranging meetings with well experienced doctors such as Prof. David Katz, Prof. Stuart Stanton and Dr. Mike Peters of the BMA.’

Prof David Katz is an immunologist who used to work at either UCH or the Middlesex, I’ve forgotten which one – I met him in 1987. He was mates with the fraudsters at Royal Postgraduate Medical School/Hammersmith Hospital (see post ‘Interesting Facts’).

The same website tells us that in 2010, ‘The clinical attachment is at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. Dr Alan Naftalin, Prof Susan Gelding and the educational team at Newham are responsible for the programme. In addition to Newham Hospital several JMA(UK) give them the opportunity to see other aspects of UK medicine. Thus they have also spent time with Prof Michael Baum (breast disease), Prof Atul Mehta at the Royal Free Hospital (Gaucher’s disease and Lysosomal Storage Disease), Prof Anthony Warrens at the Royal London Hospital (paediatric nephrology), and Prof Stuart Stanton (urogynaecology).’

Professor Michael Baum is a cancer surgeon who has a healthy cynicism towards ineffective ‘alternative medicines’, but Baum has never spoken out about the rampant corruption and research fraud among his colleagues which he undoubtedly knows about.

Now, let me clarify. I too believe that cross-national exchanges between students and academics are valuable and I have taken part in them myself. But Stuart Stanton was a Trustee of an organisation which had as Vice-Presidents Michael Grade, who ignored Jimmy Savile and his activities during Grade’s various roles at the BBC and Greville Janner, a man who stood accused of sexually abusing children in care. In the early 1990s, Janner was questioned by police regarding sexual assaults on children and his solicitor Sir David Napley was so certain that Janner would be charged that he retained George Carman. Thus Greville had the same legal team as Jeremy Thorpe did when Thorpe stood trial in 1979 for conspiracy to murder his former gay partner. It has now been admitted that Janner should have been charged and the CPS cannot explain why he wasn’t. Years later Janner was due to face a ‘trial of the facts’ after producing evidence from at least one Top Doctor that he was unfit to stand trial. That trial of the facts took so long to arrive that Janner died before it happened.

Stuart Stanton is a Top Doctor who spent most of his career working at St George’s Hospital Medical School, an institution which was concealing at least two paedophile rings, both of which had links to the ring that Janner was part of in Leicester. The Head of the Dept in which Stanton was employed, Prof Geoffrey Chamberlain, was a key figure in concealing organised abuse. Chamberlain was friends with Ollie Brooke, the Prof of Paediatrics at St George’s, who in 1986 was jailed for the possession of child porn. Brooke was a key figure in a pan-European paedophile ring.

So what is Stanton doing in Israel?

Someone who is now constructed as a UK expert on old age care knows a lot about the abuses of vulnerable people in north Wale – step forward Professor Vanessa Burholt of the Centre for Innovative Ageing at Swansea University. The spiel about Ness on Swansea’s website tells us that:

After graduating from the Open University in 1994, Vanessa worked as a researcher at Bangor University while she undertook her PhD. After completing her PhD in 1998, Vanessa became Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Policy Research and Development at Bangor University and in 2004 took over as Director. Vanessa was awarded a personal Chair at Bangor in 2007, and shortly after moved to Swansea University, as Director of the Centre for Innovative Ageing. In 2016 Vanessa was also appointed Director of the pan-Wales Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research.

Vanessa holds a public appointment as the research member of the Ministerial Advisory Forum on Ageing and is co-Chair of My Home Life Cymru. Personal awards include Fellow of the Academy of Social Science and Senior Research Leader for Health and Care Research Wales. In 2015 and 2017 she won the College of Human and Health Science outstanding contribution to research award. She is a member of the ESRC DTC Peer Review College. She sits on the ESRC Grants Assessment Panel C and is member of the Board for Health and Care Research Wales. Vanessa sits on the CHHS Senior Management Board, the Social Care Ethics Committee, and the Research Committee.

Vanessa has worked on and led international and national research projects worth approximately £18M, and has supervised 23 post-graduate students. Her research interests include loneliness, support networks, intergenerational relationships, social exclusion, rurality, migration of older people and attachment to place and she has published more than 50 articles and book chapters on these topics.’

This translates as:

Ness worked at Bangor University throughout the Waterhouse Inquiry into the abuse of children in care, about which no-one knew anything, although Ness’s colleagues facilitated that abuse and ignored all complaints from witnesses and victims. Ness was involved with the School of Psychology, which was led by Professor Fergus Lowe; Fergus and his mistress Pauline Horne built their entire empire by holding everyone who had colluded with Dafydd and the paedophiles over a barrel. Ness was also involved with IMSCaR, a research institute which was Directed by Prof Mark Williams, a clinical psychologist who worked with the paedophile gang and perpetrated the research fraud which was Mindfulness. Bruce Napier, a clinical psychologist who ran away from the Hergest Unit screaming loudly, was subsequently employed at IMSCaR. One of Ness’s mentors in old age care at Bangor University was Professor Bob Woods, the man who ran the clinical psychology programme, which involved students undertaking placements at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh where they witnessed patients being abused and, if they were female students, were sexually harassed and propositioned by Dafydd. Ness knew as well as the rest of north Wales that the care for the elderly in the region, particularly for EMI patients, was so bad that healthcare staff did all they could to find alternative care for their own relatives.

Some 10 years ago, Ness’s PhD supervisor Prof Clare Wenger, who had by then retired, had the misfortune to be admitted to a ward for the elderly at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. Clare Wenger was so appalled by what she witnessed that she compiled an extensive report, sent it over 100 colleagues and healthcare bodies and appeared in the media. She was denounced by Ysbyty Glan Clwyd as a stuck up old cow. Not one of Clare’s colleagues or students defended her. Ness bagged her job at Swansea and fucked off out of north Wales to become an international expert on old age care. Which was of course what Clare Wenger was. Some years after Clare Wenger was ignored and then trashed when she refused to shut up, the Tawel Fan Scandal blew up on an EMI ward at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Just how fucking stupid are you all?

‘First they came for the Service Users, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Service User.’

It was an international trafficking ring. They killed witnesses.

A national emergency has been declared. The National Crime Agency and the Home Secretary Sajid Javid have put out a paedophile alert on the grounds that an estimated 80,000 people constitute an online risk to children – they will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to hunt these people down. Oh don’t bother. The people facilitating it all are sitting in Top Docs surgeries, social service depts, counsellors therapy rooms, in police stations, in the Courts and in Parliament and their activities are no secret. It could have all been stopped thirty years ago when hundreds and hundreds of young people were complaining that they were being threatened, assaulted and sexually abused by the welfare services in north Wales. No-one helped us, no-one. Most of the complainants have since been found dead. Fuck off all of you. Why would anyone believe a word that any of you say?

The Labour Party is now in a state of total civil war. Margaret Hodge is demanding Jezza’s head on a plate for his alleged anti-Semitism and Gordon has joined in the fray, emphasising that there can be no place for hatred within the Labour Party. Everyone involved in this punch-up concealed Dafydd and the gang for years. However, the hyenas can smell Jezza’s blood and so they are circling.

News Round Up, August 15 2017

There’s been quite a few stories in the news over the past few days which have touched on matters previously discussed on this blog. There  was a lot of publicity given to a ‘modern slavery’ case in Lincolnshire, in which eighteen ‘vulnerable people’ were found to have been kept as slaves, some of them having been there for many years. Guess what? It was revealed that they included people who were homeless or destitute, with mental health problems or drug or alcohol problems – in other words Empowered Service Users. Somebody from the Red Cross was given air time to comment on one news bulletin, then someone from the Salvation Army was given air-time later in the day to make a few more observations on the case. Both banged on about vulnerable people who hadn’t asked for help. Can we be sure of that? Could the slaves possibly have been like those residents of Prestwood Homes – which was also a trafficking organisation – (see post ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector) and had actually tried to run away or told people what was happening, but were simply ignored, as the Prestwood residents were when they told MIND what was going on? Both the Red Cross and Salvation Army have spent years working with the groups of people from whom the Lincolnshire slaves were drawn – have they been asleep? I’ve worked with those groups of people too and I have been telling people for years that they are being abused in multiple ways. Furthermore the Red Cross have known about something very worrying in north Wales for a long time – they have known that Gwynedd Social Services has been refusing to discharge it’s duties. Because about ten years ago the Red Cross were doing what Gwynedd Social Services should have been doing re providing support for vulnerable people. I was told that the Red Cross were actually doing a very good job and that those on the receiving end of their ‘services’ were most grateful. But I was also told that people were being left virtually destitute and the Red Cross were not always able to plug the very big gaps. Why didn’t they publicise what was going on – that Gwynedd Social Services were breaking the law and leaving people destitute? Surely the Red Cross had a duty to flag this up, behind the scenes if necessary. Did no-one think to write to Carwyn? Or did they, only to be ignored like I was when I brought the criminal activities of the mental health services in north Wales to the attention of the Welsh Gov’t? If this is the case Red Cross, get blogging now and let everyone know what is happening.

Another news story also demonstrated the way in which the Third sector has colluded with institutional neglect and abuse. Action for Children released frightening statistics relating to the numbers of children and families who are being turned away after they have asked for help from social services. The Action for Children report confirmed what I already knew – that children are being constantly put at risk by social services depts across the UK. It has been happening for years and it is how scandals like those which involved Baby P or Aaron Gilbert arise – the death of a child, the aftermath of which sees the social services robustly defending their lack of action, stating that the death was ‘unforeseeable and unpreventable’ and that the people directly responsible for the death (usually some very inadequate parents known to social services) are the only people responsible and that social workers really cannot be blamed in any way. Much as I applaud Action for Children for coming clean about the degree of neglect and indifference that is prevalent, I wish that they’d gone public on this years ago. Furthermore, where are the other children’s charities who also knew that this was happening? Barnardos? The NSPCC? Dear old Childline and Esther? Anyone there?

As more and more of Blair’s flagship policies unravel I have been entertained to listen to the New Labour Ministers who forced the policies through in the face of criticism who have now been wheeled out to tell everyone how badly things are going wrong. Lord Adonis has been absolutely everywhere in the media during the last few days, screaming blue murder about the state of UK universities, the problems being caused by high tuition fees and the enormous sums now being earned by Vice-Chancellors. Who started all this off? One Lord Adonis, back in the days when he was being robustly promoted as the Brains behind New Labour HE policy. He and his colleagues were told again and again by sociologists that this Was Not Going To Work, but they ignored everyone. I even received a letter from one of the HE Ministers – Bill Rammell – myself after I wrote to him. It was a very friendly letter, telling me that he wished me the best with my research and that he’d like to read the outputs, but that I would soon see how successful Labour’s HE policies are. No, I never did see that, instead I watched universities become increasingly chaotic, increasingly stretched and increasingly unable to do what they were supposed to do. No-one actually reversed any of the policies that weren’t working, instead universities were encouraged to become even more marketised and because successive Gov’ts couldn’t afford the policies that they were implementing, the only option was to charge the students a fortune in tuition fees. As for Vice-Chancellors’ salaries – VCs have been positively encouraged to think of themselves as businessmen rather than academics and universities have been encouraged to Compete For The Best Staff, so it is hardly surprising that some VCs have joined in the bonanza. Others feel justified in accepting high salaries because the institutions that they are running are actually so troubled that it is often quite a feat to keep the show on the road. These are your chickens coming home to roost Adonis and I don’t think that the world of HE needs any more advice from you.

Not that Adonis’s own colleagues dared tell him that his big idea was causing serious problems – they all toed the New Labour line. On one occasion I attended a debate re ‘education and employment’ with a few politicians on the panel, one of whom was Eluned Morgan, now Baroness Morgan, representing Labour. Firstly Eluned trotted out the myth that the country needed nearly all young people to go to university to fill all the highly skilled jobs in the Knowledge Economy. I told Eluned that I had not yet found the Knowledge Economy, although I’d been looking everywhere for it for quite a few years. What I did find were coffee shops and nail bars. Lots of them. Eluned gave me a very snotty look and simply repeated that the Knowledge Economy was with us and that all these highly paid jobs in it needed the graduates that were being produced en masse. Well Eluned, I’m still waiting to find the Knowledge Economy, it’s a bit like Saddam’s Weapons of Mass Destruction, we keep being told that it exists but no-one’s actually seen it. Graduates are now getting seriously pissed off that they are unable to find well-paid jobs, even after they’ve worked for no pay in ‘internships’, so perhaps you could let them know where the Knowledge Economy is hiding.

After Eluned explained all about the Knowledge Economy, she then went on to explain that she came from Ely and that she was about the only person in Ely to go to university and it will now be really great because everyone from Ely would soon be going to university. Of course it is true that in mine and Eluned’s day, getting into university was a minority activity and one that had much more to do with one’s social class than anything else, but all the HE policy that Eluned just couldn’t bring herself to criticise has done is to devalue graduate level qualifications and engender an enormous amount of snobbery between universities, as the Russell Group make it quite clear that they’re in a rather different league to everyone else. One might as well give everyone in Ely a PhD and tell them that this represents social mobility. In fact Eluned would probably support such a policy if it advanced her own interests.

I have long since wondered how someone as vacuous as Eluned and with so few achievements under her belt ended up being given a seat in the Lords in 2010. (A cynic suggested a few months ago that it was because she was friendly with the Kinnocks.) So I did a bit of googling. I was interested to discover that the Woman From Ely who made it to university against all odds actually attended Atlantic College, one of the most expensive public schools in Wales. She did come from the mean streets of Ely though – her dad Bob was a clergyman there (he’s a Rev’d Canon and he’s got an OBE). Bob was big in the Labour Party too – in 1974 he was elected to both Cardiff City and South Glamorgan County Councils and in 1977 he became Leader of the Labour Group. Readers might remember my two recent posts ‘I Want Serious Money Now’ and ‘Corruption Bay Special’, in which I explained how many millions of public money was spent on the development of Cardiff Bay, which benefited some very rich businessmen and their friends but very few other people. Bob was reported as being ‘firmly behind the £25 million scheme that led to the building of a new County Hall at the centre of the former Cardiff docks area’. Bob was of course one of the Councillors who was going to be sitting in that County Hall. Bob might well have known David Rowe-Beddoe, the Chair of the WDA that provided the dosh for the development of Corruption Bay – Rowe-Beddoe was for many years Chair of the Representative Body, the organisation that oversees the funds of the Church in Wales.

Eluned herself has obviously been seduced by some of those who made a fortune out of Corruption Bay – she is Chair of the Cardiff Business Partnership, which not so long ago carried out some ‘research’ that ‘showed’ that Wales would benefit from another agency just like the WDA. Cardiff Business Partnership made this claim at about the same time that Cardiff University’s School of Management maintained that abolishing the WDA was a decision that the Welsh Gov’t would regret (‘Fings might get broken if the WDA isn’t resurrected to give us millions’). Eluned is an Honorary Distinguished Professor at Cardiff University. The ‘overview’ of her on the University website states that a Professor David Boucher had observed that Eluned had been elevated to the Lords and that Cardiff University ‘look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with her’. Tribute was paid to Eluned’s previous activities in the European Parliament and her ‘vast experience in relation to specific policy sectors – such as energy’ [Morgan was] ‘Labour spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Science’ [she] ‘authored the European Parliament’s position on the Energy Green Paper and Electricity Directive’. The website goes on to note that Eluned is now employed by SWALEC (the former South Wales Electricity Board, which was of course privatised), ‘a company very keen to look at opportunities for closer collaboration in Innovation and Research and Development in Wales’. I clicked on the ‘teaching’ part of Eluned’s profile because I was curious to find out exactly what the Honorary Distinguished Professor taught, but there’s nothing listed.

Eluned has another role in Cardiff University as well – she is a member of the External Advisory Body to the Welsh Governance Centre.

Eluned was elected to the European Parliament in 1994. She didn’t only busy herself there – she was a founding member of the Yes for Wales cross party group which campaigned for the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales. In which she now has a seat, after being elected in May 2016 as the AM for Mid and West Wales from the regional list. Whilst Eluned was an MEP she was successful in obtaining a great deal of convergence funding for Mid and West Wales, so presumably she reckoned that they owed her one. Before the National Assembly was established Eluned had been for many years sitting on the Welsh Labour Party Executive. As a result of this she was appointed to the Welsh Assembly Advisory Group responsible for developing the standing orders of the National Assembly for Wales.

Eluned has worked as a researcher for both S4C and the BBC.

After the Ely riots in 1991 Eluned’s dad Bob told the local populace that there was no excuse for rioting and that they were ‘excreting on their own doorstep’ (presumably if Bob was really Of Ely, he would have used the phrase ‘shitting on their own doorstep’). Bob did however observe that the conditions in which the rioters lived were dire. One wonders why Bob didn’t push for a £25 million investment in Ely like he did in order to get himself a new County Hall in Corruption Bay. Eluned didn’t Fight For Ely from the European Parliament after she was elected either, presumably because she was far too busy writing the position that the European Parliament were going to take on the Energy Green Paper and Electricity Directive before taking a job with SWALEC herself.

I have another observation regarding Eluned’s dad Bob and his commitment to the people of Ely. Many moons ago before Bob was the Rev’d Canon or had bagged an OBE or had become leader of the Labour Group in Cardiff or even had a daughter in the Lords, Bob trained as a social worker before entering the priesthood. In the late 60s Ely Hospital was the centre of one of the worst scandals that there has ever been in the UK regarding the abuse of patients. Bob was never tempted to get his teeth into that one then to help the folk of Ely…

There is an article in the Daily Post today speculating on an expected forthcoming Cabinet reshuffle by Carwyn. The Post mentions that an Eluned Morgan is ‘expecting promotion’. Well you know how it is Carwyn, Fings Break…

The Post also mentions that Jane Hutt is expected to leave the Welsh Gov’t soon. I think that the sooner Jane Hutt is out of Gov’t the better. I haven’t paid much attention to Jane Hutt on the blog, but I am certainly well aware of her presence on the planet. Jane Hutt was the first Health Minister appointed by Rhodri after the National Assembly was created. She was eventually forced to stand down in 2005 after NHS waiting lists just grew and grew and grew and people demanded her head on a platter. But there was of course something rather worse than the long NHS waiting lists on Jane’s watch – yes, it was the mental health services in north Wales. It was on Jane’s watch that the North West Wales NHS Trust were refusing to treat suicidal people who then killed themselves and when staff from the same Trust were perjuring themselves in order to have patients arrested and convicted of serious offences if they had dared complain. Jane was Health Minister when I was accused of ‘threatening to kill’ the manager of the Hergest Unit and e mails were sent out by Patricia Gaskill, Ysbyty Gwynedd’s solicitor, asking for ‘more nurses down the police station please’ to make fallacious statements about me. It was on Jane Hutt’s watch that I was violently assaulted by staff in the Hergest Unit and prevented from reporting the matter to the police, it was on Jane Hutt’s watch that it was documented upon my medical records that I had ‘set fire to the Hergest Unit’ (I hadn’t) and was refused all support. I of course was one of the lucky ones in as much as I actually stayed alive. It was on Jane Hutt’s watch that the Hergest Unit’s patch achieved the accolade of having the second highest suicide rate among women patients in England and Wales. Jane is a well-known feminist and before going into politics helped found Welsh Woman’s Aid and was Director of Chwarae Teg, a Third sector organisation dedicated to achieving gender equality!

Of course, Jane didn’t only have responsibility for Health – her full title was Minister for Health and Social Services. SOCIAL SERVICES. Jane was appointed to that role in 1999. The Waterhouse Report was published in 2000. One person mentioned in the Waterhouse Report was Glanville Owen. He was Deputy Director of Social Services whilst the paedophile gang raged and Glanville appointed a man known to be supervising the people abusing the children to a position as Head of Children’s Services. When Jane was Minister for Health and Social Services, Glanville Owen was Chief Exec of Gwynedd Community Health Council. The patients’ voice! Not only did Glanville lie to me in an effort not to investigate my complaint about Hergest but he lied again when I revisited him and then failed to investigate my complaint anyway.

Jane hit the jackpot again in 2007 – once all that talk about a paedophile ring operating in the social services in north Wales causing havoc had died down, Jane became Minister for Children!

Er – Jane??? Any comments?

So what was Jane’s background before entering politics? Well her dad was a Top Doctor at Tommy’s, a Professor of Pathology to be precise. Jane didn’t study medicine herself – she instead ended up at the LSE and in 1972 completed a Certificate in Social Work! The official blurb about Jane tells us that she has ‘lived and worked in Wales since 1972′. But she doesn’t tell us what she worked AT, until she mentions that she was appointed as the co-ordinator of Welsh Women’s Aid in 1978. So what did you do in the missing six years then Jane? Did you perhaps work as a social worker? Jane’s biography does mention a few other things though. That she was a Councillor in South Glamorgan County Council and that she was the former Vice-Chair of the Social Services Committee! She was also a non-executive director of Cardiff Community Health Care Trust.

I can state with some certainty that Jane has knowledge of the paedophiles and the paedophiles’ friends. You find out a lot about that sort of thing if you’re involved with Women’s Aid – and you don’t find out what you are told by Councillors or social workers, you get it straight from the horses mouth. That is, from the mothers of the children who are being abused, or from the women who were abused themselves or from the women are being threatened or harassed by corrupt health and welfare professionals to keep them quiet. Jane would have known. But after Jane would have heard from the people on the receiving end, Jane probably hobnobbed with some of the paedophiles’ friends who concealed it all. Because as explained in previous posts, some of them had connections to Cardiff. Some of the paedophiles’ friends were graduates of Cardiff – and of the LSE.

Ioan Bowen Rees, the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council between 1980-91 who appointed Lucille Hughes as Director of Social Services – who then used her position to conceal and facilitate the paedophile gang – and who then did everything he could himself to conceal the gang when it’s activities were brought to his attention, had previously worked in local government in Cardiff. Ioan Bowen Rees was an authority on local government, his work in this area was known on a Europe-wide basis, he’d have been popping down to Cardiff all the time. Bowen Rees was later appointed a member of the working party that advised Ron Davies the then Secretary of State for Wales on matters regarding the National Assembly as it was brought to life. Of course Jane will have known him and I bet that Eluned Morgan did as well.  Ioan Bowen Rees’s successor as Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council was Huw Vaughan Thomas who originally came from mid-Glamorgan. Huw continued Bowen Rees’s sterling work in concealing the paedophile gang and accepting legal advice from the Council’s own corrupt lawyers not to speak to Alison Taylor, the social worker who blew the whistle on the paedophile gang. In 1996 Gwynedd County Council was abolished once Wales could bear the embarrassment of it’s existence no longer. Huw busied himself with his other interests – many of which were in south Wales. Between 2002-04 Huw was a member of the Richards Commission into the powers and electoral arrangements of the National Assembly of Wales. In 2010 Huw was appointed Auditor General for Wales. Jane Hutt was Minister for Business and Budget 2009-11 and Minister for Finance 2011-16. She’ll probably maintain that she’s never met Huw Vaughan Thomas now that she’s been outed on this blog.

Full details of the atrocities that were happening in Gwynedd in the children’s services and mental health services whilst Bowen Rees and Vaughan Thomas ran the county and the very great lengths to which they and everyone who worked for them went in order to ensure that none of them were ever prosecuted or even dismissed can be read in my post ‘I Know Nuzzing…’ It all went on whilst Jane built her reputation on the back of Women’s Aid and Chwarae Teg. For readers in England, ‘Chwarae Teg’ translates as ‘Fair Play’.

The one thing that none of this has been is fair play.

As well as being Minister for Health and Social Services and Minister for Children, at one point Jane was Minister for Assembly Business and Chief Whip with responsibility for Openness in Gov’t, Communications Strategy and co-ordinating Gov’t Policy re Children and Equality of Opportunity.

You need to leave Gov’t quickly Jane – you should never have been there in the first place.

Jane’s online profile mentions that she was a very close friend of the former First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

Another sinner with a benevolent smile on his face mentioned in the Daily Post article is Mark Drakeford. The Post reports that because Drakeford supports Jeremy Corbyn, some would like to see him take over as leader of Welsh Labour when Carwyn stands down. In such circumstances I’d ask Carwyn to stay in his job until Mark Drakeford is pushing up the daisies and is in no danger of becoming First Minister.

Like Jane, Drakeford was once a social worker – with Dyfed County Council, although that particular bit of info seems to have disappeared from the internet. Ever since I pointed out on this blog that not only was there a paedophile ring operating in Dyfed but that Ioan Bowen Rees invited a team of ‘senior officers’ from Dyfed to ‘investigate’ the children’s services in Gwynedd after complaints were made of abuse and neglect in a children’s home. Only a few years previously Ioan Bowen Rees had been County Secretary of Dyfed. However Mark Drakeford’s online biography is fessing up to him having been a probation officer, a youth justice worker and a Barnardos programme leader in Ely. What the fuck is it about Ely??? I shall have to get down there and see this place for myself. The probation service did of course know all about the paedophile gang in north Wales. Not only that, but some of the paedophiles and their friends had worked in the probation service themselves and some of them joined the probation service after they’d wreaked havoc with the kids in care. A number of the paedophiles and their friends had also worked with Barnardos.

What else did Mark do before he was elected as AM for Cardiff West in 2011? Well between 1985-93 he was a Labour Councillor with South Glamorgan County Council. He’ll have rubbed noses with the Rev Bob and Jane then. As well as a few of those involved with the development of Corruption Bay. Between 2000-10 he was the Cabinet’s Health and Social Policy Advisor – so he was in post throughout the reign of Queen Jane of Fair Play and the reign of the nakedly corrupt Dr Brian Gibbons of This Correspondence Is Closed fame. Drakeford took over Rhodri’s seat when he stood down. Shortly after his election Drakeford became Chair of the Assembly’s Health and Social Care Committee. So it was natural justice when the barrel of shit that is the NHS in north Wales that Drakeford et al had covered up for so long exploded in Drakeford’s face in 2013 in the form of Tawel Fan after he was appointed Health Minister. Between 2003-13 Mark Drakeford was Professor of Social Policy at Cardiff University, so presumably he understands how serious research fraud is. I wrote to Drakeford when he was Health Minister telling him of the research fraud involving the development of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy carried out by Professor Mark Williams et al (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’). I did not receive a reply but about three weeks later I read a newspaper article about MBCT which included comments regarding the benefits of MBCT from Mark Drakeford accompanied by a nice photo of Drakeford with the researchers involved in this fraud.

More recently I came across an online advert for a conference in Cardiff concerning the undesirability of blaming social workers in the event of scandals in social work. Drakeford was a keynote speaker, along with Sharon Shoesmith. Shoesmith was of course the Director of Children’s Services in Haringey when the disaster which ended with the death of Baby P took place. Sharon was memorably interviewed by Eddie Mair on the radio and told him that the ‘service’ that she ran had been judged to be a four star service. Mair asked her how many stars she thought that she’d get for this. Shoesmith was famously sacked by Ed Balls but sadly Balls forgot to follow policy, Shoesmith sued and was awarded nearly one million in compensation. She gave a number of media interviews constructing herself as the victim, stating that her life had been destroyed. Unlike Baby P, Sharon made a Lazarus-like recovery and recently emerged from the LSE with a PhD – the subject of her thesis was her involvement with the Baby P case. She has now written a book based on her thesis. If Drakeford ever did become First Minister he’d probably appoint Sharon as Minister for Looked-After Babies. There won’t be any danger of Drakeford blaming any social workers for anything.

Note to Jane and Mark: People DIED at the hands of the paedophile gang you fucking idiots.

Someone else who will have known all about the paedophiles and their friends is Howard Thomas. Indeed some of them even worked for him – Howard Thomas was Chief Probation Officer for North Wales 1985-96. Howard is a keen writer of letters to newspapers (there’s a letter from him in today’s Daily Post). He’s been doing this for years. Howard writes really good letters too, describing the folly of imprisoning disadvantaged and dispossessed people with mental health problems. Latterly Howard has taken up the cause of Women – has he been talking to Jane? – and is arguing that far fewer of them should be imprisoned. Howard is clearly a man of some influence – Hansard records that in Sept 2012 Howard gave written evidence to the Justice Committee, again regarding the imprisonment of vulnerable people. Whenever I read one of Howard’s letters I agree with every word. I’d really like to meet Howard. Years ago I wanted to meet Howard to talk to him about penal policy. Now I’d like to meet him to ask him why he employed paedophiles as probation officers, and why he has never mentioned the paedophile gang during his many years of campaigning. I’d also like to remind him that whilst he was Chief Probation Officer, the paedophiles’ friends had me unlawfully arrested and illegally detained in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and that numerous victims of the paedophile gang were found dead, including some who had dared give evidence against them and five who all died in one arson attack. The carnage on the ground whilst Howard ran the North Wales Probation Service is all very inconsistent with the letters that he’s been writing to newspapers since he retired. Or indeed with the evidence that he gave to Parliament.

Howard Thomas is a former member of the Parole Board. As is Huw Vaughan Thomas. Jane Hutt will probably turn up on there soon along with Dafydd and Lucille.

On the subject of crime and punishment, the consequences of another New Labour flagship policy which everybody told them at the time was a stupid and dangerous idea has been widely discussed in the media over the last few days – indeterminate prison sentences for public protection. This was part of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, one of David Blunkett’s madder brainwaves whilst he was Home Secretary. He was told that it would lead to people who had committed trivial crimes as a result of mental health problems being incarcerated for years, but Blunkett ignored all advice. He was busy being Tough On Crime And The Causes Of Crime – although not with paedophile gangs with connections to Westminster obviously – and was ensuring that ASBOs were being handed out to teenagers with Tourettes syndrome, so nothing was going to stop Blunkett. It has now been revealed that although this disastrous policy was discontinued in 2012, there are still thousands of people with mental health problems banged up in prison who haven’t actually done very much. But the Parole Board knows that they’re Too Dangerous To Let Out. And we all know who sits on the Parole Board… The case being highlighted in the media is that of a suicidal man with mental health problems who has now been in prison for eleven years because he set fire to a mattress. His mother was interviewed and explained that people didn’t believe her when she told them this, they maintained that her son must have committed a serious crime to be banged up for thirteen years. I believe her. Particularly if he dared complain about Top Doctors who were concealing a paedophile ring. Who was Blunkett’s deputy at the Home Office, the Minister of State for the Criminal Justice System and Law Reform, who actually did the legwork on indeterminate sentences, pushing through such a controversial policy? It was none other than Baroness Patricia Scotland QC, who picked up her peerage whilst she was the barrister acting for the Welsh Office at the Waterhouse Inquiry – the Inquiry which covered up the extent of the activities of the paedophile gang that operated in north Wales for decades with the knowledge of the Welsh Office.

I’m hoping that someone will remind the media of someone else who is in prison as a direct result of David Blunkett wanting a bit of publicity for being Tough On Crime – Howard Hughes. Howard Hughes is currently in prison after being convicted in July 1996 of the rape and murder of Sophie Hook in Llandudno. There was absolutely no forensic evidence against him at all and a number of people involved with the case were those who also concealed the paedophile gang. Howard Hughes has learning disabilities and mental health problems and passed through both Bryn Estyn – where he claims that he was abused – and Garth Angharad, the ‘hospital for mentally abnormal criminals’ that was actually owned by Paul Hett, a struck off solicitor who was one of the paedophiles’ friends and which served as a prison for people who had complained about the paedophiles and their friends. David Blunkett personally intervened in the case of Howard Hughes and gave him a 50 year tariff. Full details of Hughes’s case can be read in my post ‘News Round Up – And Murder Most Foul’.

Of course Blunkett overhauled the legislation relating to sex offences in 2002, ‘tightening protection against rapists, paedophiles and other sex offenders’.

Yet more fall-out from another New Labour cock-up occurred after Denzil Lush, a retired senior judge in the Court of Protection, went public regarding his concerns over what is happening in situations involving the Power of Attorney. Denzil Lush is the leading authority on this legislation and is now publicly stating that he would not advise anyone to utilise it after a number of high profile cases of people who have been abused or fleeced by others to whom they have granted Power of Attorney. Lush maintains that there are not sufficient safeguards and he fears that there may be many more cases of vulnerable people who have been abused or swindled under this system. Again, when the legislation was passed, there were warnings that it would leave vulnerable people open to abuse.

The Power of Attorney system is administered by the Minister of Justice and the Office of the Public Guardian, which is an executive agency of the Minister of Justice. The Office of the Public Guardian replaced the Public Guardianship Officer (it’s a bit like the Judean Peoples’ Front and the Peoples’ Front of Judea) and came into being on 1 Oct 2007. Now one would have thought that with a new Office dealing with the most sensitive of cases involving the most vulnerable people losing control over their liberty, their money, their possessions and decisions concerning ALL aspects of their life because they have been deemed to lack capacity, the Gov’t would have been very careful indeed whom they appointed as Chief Exec of this Office. Particularly as they had been warned repeatedly that people with learning difficulties and mental health problems would be placed at risk. Did the Gov’t appoint a lawyer perhaps, someone with a track record in protecting the rights of people and with an understanding of legislation? No. They appointed a man called Richard Brook. Who had just stepped down from his role as Chief Exec of MIND no less.

Brook was Chief Exec of MIND between 2001 and 2006. Brook was Chief Exec of MIND when I wrote and told them about the abuses and assaults being carried out by Hergest staff, as well as the staff perjuring themselves in an attempt to secure convictions against patients for serious offences if those patients had complained. I received an extraordinary letter back, written as if addressing a young child, telling me that I had to find a Yellow Pages telephone book, look under ‘solicitors’, choose one and go and tell them. Brook was also Chief Exec of MIND when Prestwood Homes – which was trafficking female residents into sex work and male residents into unpaid manual labour – were using the free facilities provided by MIND in north Wales such as drop-in centres, walking groups etc in order to claim that ‘clients’ had a full social programme of activities. Prestwood charged thousands of pounds a week for a ‘placement’, the MIND activities were provided completely free. Furthermore, Prestwood clients TOLD the staff at the MIND drop in centres that they were being abused. One female client of Prestwood who had been raped as a child was locked in a room whilst pornography was screened at high volume as ‘therapy’. This young woman was told that if she didn’t ‘co-operate’ at Prestwood she would be taken back to Liverpool, dumped on the street and refused further ‘services’. Those ‘clients’ were slaves and it was happening with the full knowledge of MIND. What happened to that young woman? She disappeared. She never showed up at MIND again after she blew the whistle and Prestwood announced that she was ‘no longer a client’. What did the MIND rep do? She told Robin Holden – who was at that time a manager of the Hergest Unit – who told her that ‘we know all about Prestwood’. Holden is now an ‘executive’ for MIND. Are these people completely stupid? They were told by a 19 year old girl that she was being held captive and abused – she then disappeared off the face of the earth. Another person knew about Prestwood – because I told him, as did a number of other people. That was Geoff Lees. Who is now Director of Vale of Clwyd MIND. Would the whole bloody lot of you – Sue Sayer, Robin Holden and Geoff Lees – now like to go to the police and tell them all that you knew about Prestwood? For details of the full horror that was Prestwood and for details of the untimely death of a support worker who had witnessed truly dreadful things there, see posts ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’ and ‘News Round Up And Crime Report, May 14 2017’.

So who was the Minister responsible for the Office of the Public Guardian when it was created and when Brook was appointed? The Minister concerned was the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice – a man called Charlie Falconer. A old friend of Tony Blair’s, Blair’s former flatmate when they were both junior barristers and the first person to be given a life peerage by Blair, whereupon he immediately joined the Gov’t as Solicitor-General. Falconer joined the Home Office in 2002 and in 2003 joined the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and as Lord Chancellor ‘for an interim period’ – because Blair planned to abolish the office of Lord Chancellor without discussion. He was told that would not be possible without primary legislation so the plan was dropped. So instead the roles of Lord Chancellor were reorganised, the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs took over some of the responsibilities of Lord Chancellor and also became the sponsoring dept of the Secretary of State for Wales and the Secretary of State for Scotland. What a very tight stitch-up it all was.

Charlie Falconer is married to another lawyer – Marianna Hildyard QC. She specialises in cases involving children, sexual abuse, the placement of children for adoption and trafficking! In 2009 she was made a Deputy High Court Judge.

Should anyone accuse me of going into Grassy Knoll territory here, I would urge you to carefully read and digest the information that I’m posting on this blog. This CANNOT all be a coincidence. There has been a systematic promotion to high office of people who have played key roles in the cover-up of the North Wales Paedophile Ring. Once in office those people have implemented laws and policies that have either criminalised people who have been victims of or are witnesses to the activities of that ring, or made it nigh-on impossible for they or other vulnerable people to have their complaints heard and investigated. Yet all this has been very cleverly designed in the name of equity, ‘protection’ of the vulnerable or human rights. Charlie Falconer himself boasted to an audience in Bangor a few years ago that the Human Rights Act that his Gov’t had passed would mean that no-one would now suffer indignities in care settings – they could sue under the Human Rights Act. What he didn’t mention was at the same time, his Gov’t had virtually abolished Legal Aid, so in reality no-one could sue for anything, no matter how gross the abuse. Along with me in that audience were two lawyers who were fighting cases on behalf of people who had been abused by the Hergest Unit and/or Gwynedd Social Services. Those lawyers were nearly put out of business when Falconer et al withdrew Legal Aid. But that was no doubt most convenient – because those lawyers were of course fighting the Top Doctors and Social Service managers who had concealed the fucking paedophile ring. I and the two lawyers wanted to question Charlie. He wouldn’t take questions from anyone though, he said that he had to dash off for another important engagement. I found out the next day that he’d actually gone to a reception with a carefully selected group of senior academics who could be relied upon not to ask Charlie any difficult questions.

As for the appointment of Richard Brook from MIND as the first Chief Exec of the Office of the Public Guardian – Charlie knew that he’d be onto a winner there. Which was the most high profile case which involved the former Public Guardianship Officer abusing their position? It was the case of Mary Wynch in north Wales. Who had been illegally arrested, imprisoned in Risley Remand Centre and then in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for a year by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones. Dafydd declared Mary insane and Mary’s money and property was removed from her by the Public Guardianship Officer. When Mary finally got out of Denbigh she successfully sued Dafydd et al and it was admitted that she was not and had never been mentally ill. She was awarded damages but Dafydd and co never paid up. Mary never recovered her money or her property. MIND knew about all of it and did nothing. As ever. But then Dafydd’s mistress Lucille Hughes was trafficking boys to the Westminster Paedophile Ring and Dafydd was banging up anybody who complained or asked questions in the North Wales Hospital. The full details of Mary’s story can be read in my post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’.

MIND Are Out For Mental Health – Never For Themselves Of Course…

MRegular followers of this blog will know that I – and some of those commenting on my posts – have been bringing to public attention the appalling hypocrisy of MIND, an organisation claiming to be the ‘voice of the service user’ whilst concealing serious abuses in the mental health services and even entering into ‘partnerships’ with abusive services and individuals  (see posts such as ‘The Mysterious Silence Of MIND’, ‘Newly Discovered – Parabl’ and ‘The Commissioning Of Parabl – And Yet More History’).

I have explained that I first became aware of the corruption of MIND when I went down to see William Bingley, their Legal Director, in 1987 regarding the criminal activities of the north Wales mental health services. Bingley admitted that he knew all about the wrongdoing of Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and indeed he knew a lot more than I did. I gave Bingley yet more evidence re Jones et al but not only did Bingley continue to keep quiet regarding Dafydd and co but when Bingley later became Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission, he and that organisation continued to collude with Dafydd and Dr Tony Francis (Dr X), although they knew about the continued illegal detention of people and abuse of the Mental Health Act in north Wales. I knew from my meeting with Bingley that he knew an awful lot about Dafydd – including the deaths in Dafydd’s ‘care homes’, the allegations that the wrongdoing in north Wales was linked to Freemasonry and the existence of Dafydd’s extensive ‘sex therapy’ practice and the possible purposes of that business. I have no idea whether Bingley knew that Dafydd et al were concealing the paedophile ring that was operating in north Wales at the time though – the paedophile ring that was concealed again at a higher level by Thatcher’s and Major’s Gov’ts. However before Bingley began working for MIND, he worked as a research assistant for Matthew Parris, A Tory MP who had previously worked as Thatcher’s correspondence secretary. A man whose autobiography told of his summer trips – in the company of friends – to a place in Italy that they named the ‘villa of shame’, where they would be visited by ‘boys’ whom Parris described as ‘always willing’. For more background on Parris and his connections, see post ‘A Pretty Classy Piece Of Operation’.

I had thought that I had previously dug up a substantial amount of shit and compromising info on MIND, but I’ve spent a bit of time doing more research on a few other key figures in that organisation and I’ve found much more worrying info – that organisation has been compromised for decades. Here are a few of the highlights that I have dug up.

The current Chief Exec is the disgusting Paul Farmer whom I have blogged about previously. Farmer’s reputation is plummeting fast as a result of his enthusiasm for MIND to land contracts from the Dept of Work and Pensions, contracts that are all about forcing ‘service users’ into employment that may well be unsuitable and for which they may well be too ill. Farmer’s enormous salary has also been made public by disability activists – he trousers in excess of £100k pa for his role as the Voice of the Service User – and I’m delighted to say that this unscrupulous git has been met with protests on his travels around the UK. I was expecting the BBC to wheel him out for him to give his comments regarding the latest round of bad news re the UK’s mental health services, but mercifully we were spared that for once. Had he done the rounds of the BBC studios perhaps somebody would have finally asked him why he and his lame organisation have kept so quiet about the crisis – which has been evident for many years. Of course Farmer also knew all about the criminal activities of the north Wales mental health services many years ago. When I wrote to Peter Hain in his capacity as Secretary of State for Wales in approx. 2005 giving him full details of what had happened to me t the hands of the mental health services, I cc’d the letter to the Chief Exec of Rethink (I didn’t cc it to MIND because I knew that they were ignoring what was happening in north Wales) – who at the time was one Paul Farmer. I never received a response, although a few months later Farmer then became Chief Exec of MIND!

But what of previous CEOs of MIND? Before Farmer, the CEO was Richard Brook, who was appointed in 2001. Brook was CEO when I e mailed MIND HQ about the assaults being carried out by Hergest Unit staff on patients – only to receive an e mail back written as though it was to a small child telling me that what I had to do was go to the yellow pages and look up ‘solicitors’ and go and talk to one of them…. At this time the ‘service user reps’ for the Hergest were heavily involved with MIND – those reps who wet themselves at the thought of confronting Hergest staff and managers concerning the gross abuses that were endemic. One of those ‘service user reps’ admitted to me that she knew that residents in Prestwood Homes were being abused – furthermore, Prestwood Homes were taking full advantage of free MIND facilities such as walking groups, drop in centres etc without paying MIND a penny, although Prestwood were charging thousands of quid a week for a ‘placement’. Somebody else involved with MIND knew about the abuse of residents at Prestwood as well – Geoff Lees, who is now Director of Vale of Clwyd MIND. I told him about it, whilst he was still working as a social work tutor at Coleg Menai in Bangor. I know that a number of other people told him what was going on at Prestwood as well. For details of the horrors at Prestwood and the unfortunate death of a young woman support worker there who witnessed even more that I did, see posts ‘A Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’ and ‘The Commissioning Of Parabl – And Yet More History’.

Richard Brook was able to publicise unacceptable practice if he felt like it though. In 2004 the ‘Daily Mail’ ran an article entitled ‘Why I Resigned Over This Disgraceful Happy Pill Cover-Up’. The article explained that Brook had resigned from the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Authority) after he discovered that they had known about the side effects of the anti-depressant Seroxat but had not publicised them. Brook claimed that he had been threatened with legal action by Prof Kent Woods, the CEO of the MHRA, if he revealed that the MHRA had been ‘sitting on’ it’s knowledge of Seroxat’s side effects. Brook stated that MIND had been ‘tracking Seroxat’ for a decade’. So MIND knew about Seroxat and it’s problems as well then – but then they’d known about the problems in north Wales since 1979 at least, when Mary Wynch was illegally arrested and imprisoned (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’) and had done or said nothing. In this article, Brook mentions the ‘Panorama’ programme about Seroxat that had been screened the year before – that will be the programme that featured Dr David Healy, who worked at the Hergest Unit! So MIND had got into bed (so to speak) with two psychiatrists from north Wales – Dafydd, who years before had been involved with MIND and David, as he Bravely Spoke Out. Brook told the Mail that following the ‘Panorama’ programme, MIND held a demo outside the offices of the MHRA. As opposed to outside of the Hergest Unit, where patients were being assaulted, framed for serious crimes, refused treatment no matter how ill they were and were committing suicide.

Brook maintains that he went to see the Health Minister Lord Warner to tell him of his concerns regarding SSRIs and Warner told him that he would speak to the MHRA. Warner then simply issued a guide to doctors detailing the max recommended dose of Seroxat (that must have been why Dr Richard Tranter, Healy’s friend, protégé and PhD student prescribed a friend of mine three times the maximum recommended dose of Seroxat then). It was at this point that the man of principle Brook resigned from the MHRA. Brook told the Mail that there was an urgent need for an inquiry into the MHRA and stated that many people involved with the MHRA also have connections to the pharmaceutical industry. Which is true – but then MIND’s hands are as dirty as those of any advisor to the pharmaceutical industry.

In Jan 2006 Brook featured in a BBC News online report and commented on the mental health of people living in rural areas. He stated that ‘the extent of mental health problems in the countryside is likely to be hidden’ – it was in north Wales, it was hidden by MIND, they knew that huge numbers of people were being given a diagnosis of ‘borderline personality disorder’ and refused care after being told that they were ‘untreatable’. At the time the area served by the Hergest Unit had the second highest rate of suicide for women in England and Wales.

After defending people with mental health problems so successively, upon leaving MIND Brook was appointed CEO of the newly created Office of the Public Guardian! Just the sort of person that was needed in such a position obviously. After a year guarding the public, Brook then became CEO of the deaf-blind charity SENSE.

MIND’s CEO before Brook was Judi Clements, who was in post between 1992-2001. So she oversaw those crazy years in which I was repeatedly arrested by the mental health services for ludicrous reasons, in which Dafydd resisted efforts to shut down the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and for his pains walked away with the contract to provide ‘substance abuse services’ for North Wales (see post ‘The Evolution Of A Drugs Baron?’) – the years which also saw the massive cover-up of the paedophile ring in north Wales which was the Waterhouse Report, in the wake of which a lot of people who’d been victims of that gang as children were found dead after becoming ‘users’ of the mental health services. Judi’s tenure also spanned the years in which Prestwood Homes were established and became big business within just a few months, what with the constant supply of vulnerable people from secure hospitals available for Prestwood to traffic them…

Something must have happened on Judi’s watch, because there is virtually no info from MIND available about Judi, it’s as though she never passed through their doors. However, there is some info about her in an article in HSJ from 2010. HSJ told us that after being Chief Exec of MIND for nine years, she was leaving due to health related problems, namely diabetes and arthritis. A David Peryer, the Chair of Trustees of MIND, stated that Judi would be ‘sorely missed’ – so that’s why they subsequently air-brushed her out of history. Preyrer mentioned that MIND was currently undergoing restructuring to concentrate on ‘supporting local offices’. These were of course the ‘local offices’ which included those in north Wales who were so helpfully providing free services to Prestwood Homes and who then began entering ‘partnerships’ with CAIS to provide yet more ‘services’ after being handed contracts by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board – many of whose former staff and their friends were now working with MIND.

Judi didn’t just leave MIND, she did a Richard Tranter and left the UK for New Zealand. Despite the diabetes and the arthritis, Judi seems to have bounced back and in 2005 when she relocated to New Zealand, she landed a job as Chief Exec of the Mental Health Foundation over there. She ‘moved on’ in 2015. In Feb 2015 Judi featured on the website of the New Zealand Law Society, promoting her forthcoming seminar on Mindfulness for the New Zealand Law Society Auckland Branch. On this website Judi was described as an ‘experienced Chief Exec in the NGO sector’ with a ‘background in law, social policy, housing, local government and management practice’. It was explained that ‘after a successful career in local government service management, policy and practice development, Judi moved to the NGO sector’. So which failing local authority did Judi work for prior to keeping the lid on the barrel of shit in MIND then? Judi has an LLB – so she will recognise serious crime when she sees it. Or indeed conceals it – or even facilitates it.

Judi has sat on ‘several Gov’t advisory groups covering mental health, social policy and NGO development’.

Between 1989 and 1992, Ros Hepplewhite was Chief Exec of MIND. Whose reign also spanned the Dafydd years, but then the Dafydd years have gone on for the last five decades so everyone’s implicated where Dafydd is concerned. So perhaps it’s more helpful to mention that Ros’s reign spanned the period of time during which St George’s Hospital Medical School and Springfield Hospital colluded with Dafydd – although they knew what he was up – to in his attempts to have me labelled dangerous and banged up. The early 1990s of course also saw allegations that a paedophile ring was active in north Wales involving political figures appear in the London based media. Dafydd and his mistress Lucille Hughes were concealing and facilitating this paedophile ring – it was Dafydd and Lucille to whom St George’s Hospital and Springfield turned for ‘evidence’ of my dangerousness. It was in 1992 that five people with connections to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal were killed in an arson attack on a flat in Brighton (see post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs). So Ros was pretty close to some serious action.

However I can’t find any references to Ros’s activities at MIND. Although Ros did hit the headlines after she left MIND. In 1993 Ros was appointed CEO of the Child Support Agency – which was a Gov’t disaster as big as the NHS IT system that had to be shelved after a few billion had been spent on it. Although unlike the CSA, the failed NHS IT system was not thought to have contributed to anyone’s suicide…Ros was famously removed from her post and the CSA metamorphosed into something else because Gov’t could not withstand the embarrassment any longer.

I have found a reference to Ros on the blog of the Labour MEP for London, Mary Honeyball. Mary’s post dated Jan 11 2010 discusses examples of what she believed was outrageous sexism. Honeyball believes that Ros was removed from her post as a result of such sexism – nothing to do with the suicides of distraught parents then, or the numerous parents who were never able to collect their maintenance payments, or the absent parents who used every trick in the book not to pay up leaving their former partners destitute whilst the CSA refused to listen to their pleas for help… Tragedies as a result of the chaos that was the CSA involved both men and women – and of course the children. Honeyball entertainingly stated that Dame Barbara Mills the DPP was also the victim of sexism. Babs has featured on this blog previously – she was the DPP whilst the CPS found excuse after excuse not to mount prosecutions against numerous paedophiles despite stacks of evidence being presented (see post ‘A Future Leader Of The Labour Party’). Mary Honeyball also extended her ‘sympathies’ to the former Home Secretary Jaqui Smith, who was ‘hounded’ for being a ‘high profile woman’. No, Jaqui Smith became a source of national entertainment when it was revealed that her husband had rented porn films, the cost of which Jaqui had then reclaimed on her Parliamentary expenses. In a desperate attempt to salvage herself in the eyes of a nation rolling around laughing, Jaqui then tried to construct herself as a latter day Mary Whitehouse and began speaking out about Porn and Sex, which culminated in her presenting a documentary about prostitution. Unfortunately she did this whilst wearing one of those brightly coloured plastic macs when she was filmed under street lamps, which caused one of the better Radio 4 comedians – it might have been Sue Perkins – to comment that Jaqui looked like something out of ‘Band of Gold’.

Mary Honeyball ends her post by explaining that she speaks as someone ‘who ran’ the Association of Chief Officers of Probation in the mid-90s – she mentions that she didn’t have a background in probation, but that she was appointed on the basis of her other talents. So that’s why at that time some of those accused of molesting children in north Wales or failing to act when their colleagues were molesting children found it possible to move into careers with the Probation Service.

Ros Hepplewhite was CEO of MIND whilst the most dreadful scandals involving the abuse and even murder of patients occurred at Ashworth and Broadmoor. Don’t remember the Voice of the Service Users saying much about all that at the time.

At the time of my initial encounters with Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends in the mid-80s, the CEO of MIND was Christopher Heginbotham – he’d been appointed CEO in 1982. He was in post at the time that I had my meeting with William Bingley. I suspect that Chris and Bingley might have been chums – Heginbotham was appointed CEO in 1982. Bingley was working as lobbyist for MIND at that time and landed his plum full time post there in 1983. Bingley’s mother Lady Juliet Bingley was also a bigwig in MIND and was Chair 1978-84. Furthermore Heginbotham departed from MIND in 1989 – Bingley ‘moved on’ into the post as Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission in 1990. Bingley eventually wound up in the Chair of Mental Health Law and Ethics at the University of Central Lancashire and then in a role at the University of Cumbria after resigning from his post as Chair of an NHS Trust when a few awkward questions were asked about his business interests. Heginbotham also eventually secured a position at the University of Cumbria. References to William Bingley seemed to have disappeared from the MIND website recently, but I know that MIND named a building after him in Lancashire, ‘William Bingley House’. I wonder if it’ll be a bit like the fall out after Jimmy Savile’s death and MIND will end up renaming the building in a desperate attempt to pretend that they’d never met Bingley? But guess what? Heginbotham ended up in Lancashire too – where I presume that he still is.

Bingley and Heginbotham were at MIND when Savile was appointed General Manager of Broadmoor. I do not remember them questioning the appointment. What’s the betting that there’s some photos somewhere of dear old Jim with folk from MIND that are now well hidden? Should anyone know of any, please do let me know…

Heginbotham is a Director of something called ‘Values Based Commissioning Ltd’ in Lancashire, which began life in 2011. The other Director is a Christine Heginbotham. It is described as ‘health and social care consultancy’. Christopher Heginbotham has also published a book on Values Based Commissioning of Health and Social Care. So what is this all about?

According to an article in HSJ from June 2013, ‘Values Based Commissioning’ (VbC) ‘aims to put users’ views at the heart of reshaping services’. The discussion concerns the commissioning of mental health services by CCGs (Clinical Commissioning Groups) and it is explained that ‘expertise’ in this area is ‘varied’. However, as readers may have guessed, a few aficionados are on hand to help! HSJ quotes words of wisdom from Rethink’s Associate Director of Policy, Research and Campaigning, Victoria Bleazard, as well as Sophie Corlett, Director of External Relations at MIND. A Joint Commissioning Panel on Mental Health (JCPMH) was established in 2011, which is co-chaired by the Royal Colleges of Psychiatrists and General Practitioners – this Panel produced ‘guidance’. VbC is ‘a new type of commissioning’ (which must be why it involves the same old people and institutions as the previous commissioning did), ‘prioritising service users’ values and experiences’ (the Royal Colleges mentioned, Rethink and MIND have such good track records in that area don’t they).

HSJ identifies a Dr Neil Deuchar as the architect and champion of VbC – he’s a psychiatrist from Birmingham, a specialist advisor on commissioning and JCPMH Co-Chair. The other Co-Chair is Liz England, a GP who is Mental Health Lead for a Locality Care Group within a CCG and National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. Deuchar is quoted as saying that ‘patient power is the key’ and that ‘co-production between patient and carer groups, clinicians and commissioners is vital’. There then follows a bit of asinine text headed by the words ‘what do service users think?’

So Christopher Heginbotham saw an opportunity then – an insane system was devised by a Gov’t that had relied on the likes of Heginbotham and his mates at MIND for advice, this insane system was then explained to the world by HSJ and promoted by MIND and their friends, by which time Heginbotham had written his book and set up his company – presumably with Mrs Heginbotham – to serve the insane system. The insane system was entirely dependent at every stage on the involvement of the very same people and institutions that were colluding with the likes of Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends.

Is it surprising that five years down the line we have Sir James Munby, the President of the Family Courts, hitting the roof because there is virtually no provision in the whole of the UK for a suicidal 17 year old girl who is due to be released from ‘secure custody’? Although no-one has explained why a girl in her state is IN secure custody, allegedly alone in a seclusion room from which everything has been removed except a mattress on the floor. That’s going to do her a power of good isn’t it. Furthermore I guarantee that I know how that barbaric regime will be described on that girl’s records – there will be a reference to her being ‘nursed’. I have heard mental health nurses taking about ‘nursing’ people in ‘seclusion’ or ‘nursing’ them ‘on a mattress on the floor’. The whole system is completely nuts and the people working within it have been sent nuts by it if they weren’t already nuts when they took up their employment.

If readers have been impressed by the calibre of MIND CEOs described so far, hold on to your hats whilst I tell you about Heginbotham’s predecessor, Tony Smythe, CEO from 1974-82.  Smythe’s incumbency pre-dated the internet, but Smythe was quite something and info about him is still available online. Smythe’s full name was Clifford Anthony Smythe. He categorised himself as a radical anarcho-pacifist until the day that he died in 2004 and was involved with a number of political causes. He was appointed General Secretary of the NCCL in 1966, a post that he held until 1971. It was in the 70s that it became clear that the NCCL had been infiltrated by paedophiles who had conflated their cause with gay liberation – paedophiles also infiltrated the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) at this time and a number of those guilty of abusing children in north Wales were active in CHE. Smythe was at one point Vice-President of CHE. In 1971 Smythe became involved with MIND. His obituary describes him as establishing an ‘executive committee’ which led to ‘service users becoming involved in management and policy decisions’ and that this ‘chimed with Tony’s anarchist belief’.

Now this talk of the active involvement of ‘service users’ also surrounds Bingley and his mother. Which ‘service users’ do people think that the Bingleys and Smythe liberated? Psychiatry was dreadful in the 70s and early 80s – it was particularly gross in north Wales but it was pretty grim everywhere else as well. There is no way that ‘service users’ had any voice anywhere in the 70s – who are MIND actually talking about? Radical ideas were bandied around by people like Laing et al but these ideas didn’t touch mainstream psychiatric practice – it is dishonest to pretend that they did.  I am wondering if all this guff about the active involvement of ‘service users’ in MIND is simply a glorified reference to one or two influential people in the organisation who may have had mental health problems themselves at some point. Of course Dr Dafydd Alun Jones told everyone that he suffered from a ‘nervous illness’ himself – it was a good excuse when he was challenged about his appalling conduct.

CHE was usually led by people who were gay themselves, so I was interested to read that Smythe had a ‘lifelong partner’ Jeanne and five daughters. Jeanne died in 2001.

Smythe and Jeanne were involved with Haringey MIND long after Smythe had stepped down from his post as CEO. Tony Smythe was listed as a Director of Haringey MIND between 1998-2000 and Jeanne between 1990-92 and between 1996-97.

I have mentioned previously that Dr Dafydd Alun Jones had a contact in Haringey Social Services – when I finally got out of the North Wales Hospital in Jan 1987, he told me that he had rung Haringey Social Services to ‘let them know’ that I would be living on their patch. This was not any sort of referral for aftercare – this was just the way that Dafydd conducted himself. I have also mentioned that I now have copies of letters between Alun Davies, the manager of the mental health services in Gwynedd and Laurie Wood, the manager of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, in which they discuss their ‘friend’ at St George’s trying to find out which dept I was working in when I started working there in 1989 – there is also a reference to their friend accessing mail that was sent to me at St George’s in an attempt to discover my home address. There is no clue as to the identity of this friend in my documents, but whilst I was working at St George’s I was visited by a junior doctor called Jimmy Schroff who had come to find me because he’d heard that there was a girl from Bangor working there – Jimmy Schroff seemed to know everyone whom I had made a complaint about in north Wales and furthermore he had done his GP training in the practice of Dr D.G.E. Wood (see post ‘St George’s Hospital Medical School, 1989/1990’). Jimmy Schroff died some years ago – his widow works at the Betsi.

Tony Smythe was also a Director of an organisation on the Embankment called Reach Volunteering in 1990/91. In 1992 and again between 1995-2001 Jeanne was a Director of ‘an inclusive community hub’ called the Markfield Project.

Tony Smythe kept interesting company. He was acquainted with an actress called Adrienne Corri who died in 2016. Corri had a cult following and was noted for being rather excessive, sometimes swearing aggressively at her own audiences. She was friends with Ronnie and Reggie Kray. In the days before they were both banged up when it dawned upon everyone that despite hanging out with Barbara Windsor and Adrianne Corri they were a pair of vicious thugs. Who had also murdered people. Ronnie of course ended up in Broadmoor and there was a lot of huffing and puffing from some Tory MPs when it was revealed in the press that he had superstar status in Broadmoor, was politely called Mr Kray by the prison officers (who according to the likes of Professor Robert Bluglass were ‘nurses’) who generally pandered to him. What the Tories expected from an institution which Edwina Currie had appointed Jimmy Savile to run I do not know. Perhaps they should have taken a bit of notice of the other patients who complained that they were being beaten up and sexually abused by the ‘nurses’. As well as by Savile.

In 1968 whilst Tony Smythe was still leading the NCCL, they sponsored a production of Samuel Beckett’s play ‘Come and Go’ which starred Adrienne Corri. It was advertised as ‘gala entertainment concerning depravity and corruption’. The evening included other entertainment as well and was compered by George Melly. The George Melly who was famously promiscuous but whose wife was very tolerant of his desire for an open marriage. Much has been written about Melly’s bisexuality and his penchant for numerous extra-marital relationships, but his wife was I suspect much more tolerant than most people realised. Many years ago, George Melly came to do a gig at Theatre Gwynedd in Bangor. I know a man who was at the time of Melly’s performance in Bangor 16 yrs old. Melly paid to have sex with him. This was whilst the age of consent for gays was still 21. I have never seen Melly’s name included among the Rolfs or the Saviles or the Gary Glitters, which is extraordinary, particularly as some years before he died Melly gave an interview to a newspaper mentioning how much he enjoyed caressing the thighs of pre-pubescent boys. Yet no-one commented on this at all. Melly retired to Wales of course – to the Brecon Beacons.

Tony Smythe’s years as CEO of MIND covered the period of time which saw Mary Wynch unlawfully arrested and illegally detained in Denbigh for a year by Dafydd. Whilst she was in Denbigh Mary told me that she witnessed the patients in Dafydd’s ‘young people’s ward’ having sex with each other – after being encouraged to do so by Dafydd – whilst the nurses watched the show. Mary approached MIND for advice regarding her unlawful imprisonment. William Bingley admitted to me that MIND received grant funding from Gwynedd Health Authority and that Dafydd wrote to MIND telling them that he would block their dosh from Gwynedd if they advised Mary. Bingley told me that they didn’t succumb to Dafydd’s threats. However I now know that Bingley wasn’t in the least bit truthful regarding his stories of fighting for patients rights. What’s the betting that they slung Mary overboard lest they lost their dosh from Gwynedd Health Authority? Bingley also admitted to me that Dafydd had been a ‘leading light’ in MIND himself in the 1960s.

The General Secretary of MIND immediately prior to Smythe was Mary Appleby. She was CEO from 1951-74. Whilst Dafydd was a leading light in MIND! At the same time that Gwynne was lobotomising people and the paedophile ring was growing and growing, assisted by John Allen’s collection of children’s homes, the Bryn Alyn Community, which was doing a roaring trade in accepting children from across the UK but particularly from the London boroughs and the West Midlands…

Appleby died in 2013 and her obituary in the ‘Guardian’ mentioned that she became involved in MIND because there were mental health issues in her family. The ‘Guardian’ tells us that it was as a result of Mary’s efforts that MIND (then still called the National Association for Mental Health) became hugely influential, employing 200 people and was consulted by the Gov’t, the judiciary, the NHS and social workers’ organisations. In the early 70s a group of Scientologists tried to join MIND. Scientologists, although they are a rather eccentric group of people themselves, famously loathe psychiatry. They attempted to join MIND after alleging that psychiatrists were illegally imprisoning people, torturing people and were ‘carrying out perversions’. Mary fought the Scientologists in the High Court to keep them out of MIND. However, she allowed Dafydd to remain in.

Mary Appleby worked in both the War Office and the Foreign Office. She Chaired the Bench of Magistrates in an inner London juvenile Court for many years. She contributed to Gov’t Inquiries on mental health and social services. She sat on the appeals panel for the BBC and ITV and was a Member of the Immigration Appeals Tribunals. She also sat on the Selection Committee for the Civil Service. A pretty well-connected and influential lady then – even at Whitehall level.

Tony Smythe took over from Mary Appleby in 1974, but Appleby remained a Vice-President of MIND until her death in 2013. She will have not only had substantial influence regarding the appointment of Smythe, but she wielded considerable influence over that organisation for decades. She will have known exactly what sort of people were being appointed, what they were getting up to and indeed what they were concealing, ignoring or colluding with.

So what about those who have Chaired MIND? Let’s take a look at some of them….

Between 1969-78 Christopher Mayhew MP was Chair. Mayhew spent many years as a Labour MP but in 1974 he defected to the Liberals. In 1974 the Liberal MP Cyril Smith was busy abusing boys (and had been for some years) but it is now admitted that there was assistance from the security services in ensuring that he was never prosecuted (see post ‘Dr Death’). Mayhew is perhaps most famous however for taking part in a mescaline experiment in 1955 with Dr Humphrey Osmond. The plan was to film Mayhew on a mescaline trip for ‘Panorama’ but the programme was never broadcast. Humphrey Osmond was a psychiatrist who was well-known for his research into hallucinogens and schizophrenia – he was the man who administered mescaline to Aldous Huxley in the 50s which resulted in Aldous Huxley writing ‘The Doors of Perception’. Osmond also experimented with peyote when he went to stay with Native Americans.

So Mayhew was a man up for experimentation. He was given a peerage in 1981.

Between 1978 and 1984, William Bingley’s mother Lady Juliet Bingley was Chair. Juliet Bingley grew up in Harley Street – her father was a surgeon at Barts. She studied social administration at the LSE, during which time she undertook a placement in Liverpool at the Personal Services Society. In 1945 she qualified as a medical almoner (what we would now call a social worker). Her first job was at Barts. Juliet Bingley was married to Admiral Sir Alec Bingley who in 1959 was appointed NATO commander-in-chief of the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean fleet in Malta. The family only spent three years in Malta but Juliet got to work out there. She became involved in the development of health services for elderly people – but she was also good mates with the former Prime Minister of Malta, Dom Mintoff. Mintoff had just resigned as PM, which meant that Malta was under direct rule from London – Juliet became the ‘messenger’ between Mintoff and the London Gov’t and continued to play this role throughout the 70s and 80s during the various crises in Anglo-Maltese relations. Alec Bingley died in 1972 which was when Juliet became involved with MIND. She was initially Chair of the Local Associations Committee before becoming Chair of the whole organisation. In 1973 she also took up a post as medical social worker at St Marks, a hospital for gastro-intestinal disorders in London and was Chair of the Heads of Departments Committee there.

Juliet Bingley was busy with other charity work as well as MIND. In 1979 she founded the National Association for Colitis and Chrohns and she was also a founding Trustee of the Carr-Gomm Society, a charity now working for the homeless.

Well with a mum and dad with backgrounds and connections like that William Bingley was certainly not going to do anything to put Dafydd out of action whilst he and Lucille facilitated a paedophile ring supplying boys to Westminster figures and others in London who were enjoying the protection of the security services at the time. Come to think of it I don’t think that Juliet would have been particularly inclined to put a stop to Dafydd’s activities either – and she was incredibly well-connected among the very Top of the Top Doctors as well as the highest echelons of Gov’t should she need to protect him…

How did the Bingley clan ever manage to convince anyone that they were the Voice of the Service Users?

The person who succeeded Juliet as Chair of MIND was Lord David Ennals – he was Chair between 1984-89. Ennals was a Labour politician. In 1967 he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Home Office under Jim Callaghan. The Home Office that was at that time directly managing Bryn Estyn, where a brutal regime overseeing the violent sexual abuse of teenaged boys was becoming established. Ennals became Minister of State for Social Services in 1969. He lost his seat in 1970 and it was then that he became the ‘Mind campaign’ Director for the National Association of Mental Health. This campaign was established to fundraise but also to clarify the policies and aims of the organisation – as a result of the campaign in 1972 the charity changed it’s name to MIND. It was whilst Ennals was Chair that Tony Smythe was appointed Chief Exec – supposedly on the basis of his ‘human rights’ experience. Ennals remained campaign director until 1973 and was re-elected to Parliament in 1974. He lost his seat again in 1983 and was elevated to the Lords – then he popped back to MIND again to become Chair.

Ennals has a few close relatives who are worth mentioning. His younger brother Martin was a human rights activist and Secretary-General of Amnesty International. His son Paul has fingers in numerous pies.

Sir Paul Ennals was Chief Exec of the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) between 1998-2011. That’s the NCB to whom Peter Righton, a social care expert and academic who was a founder member of PIE and a convicted paedophile, acted as a ‘consultant’ (see post ‘The Waterhouse Tribunal – Who Was Involved And What Happened To Them Subsequently?’). Despite such worrying connections, the NCB, being an umbrella organisation, has links with many other organisations, including Barnardos – some of those involved with child abuse in north Wales had worked for Barnardos. The NCB also collaborates with the NSPCC – which works with Esther Rantzen’s Childline (see post ‘Ian Brockington’s Mischief’ for the questionable background of Valerie Howarth, the first Chief Exec of Childline) – and works in partnership with the Department of Health.

Paul Ennals is Chair of Haringey Local Safeguarding Children Board; South Tyneside Local Safeguarding Children Board; Gateshead Local Safeguarding Children Board; Sunderland Local Safeguarding Children Board. I do not know why Ennals has interests in both Haringey and the north east of England but I presume that he does a lot of commuting. If anyone living in the north east hopes to escape Paul Ennals’s safeguarding when they hit 18, they’ll be disappointed – he also Chairs the Safeguarding Adults Board of Gateshead and South Tyneside.

Before Ennals was involved with the NCB he was Director of Employment at the RNIB. He has Chaired or played a leading role on numerous Gov’t taskforces, working groups etc concerned with SEN, disabled or very young children.

Between 1994-2001 David Peryer was Chair of MIND. Peryer had previously been Director of Humberside Social Services. On 23 April 1998 Peryer gave evidence to the Select Committee on Health, along with Liz Sayce (Policy Director of MIND), Peter Wilson and Dinah Morley. Wilson had been Director of Young Minds for six years, was a child psychotherapist and had ‘many’ many years ago’ been a social worker. He had also worked in child and adolescent mental health at another institution familiar to readers of this blog, the Maudsley. In addition Wilson stated that he had worked in ‘child guidance’ in London. Dinah Morley was the ‘professional services manager’ for Young Minds. She had previously been the Assistant Director of an unidentified London borough, responsible for mental health and children’s services. Before that she ran a multi-disciplinary mental health team. She is also a member of a Health Authority.

So these witnesses all had vast experience of working in organisations and fields that had screwed up badly. Indeed Peryer told the Committee that he began working the field of child protection in 1977 in East Sussex, ‘shortly after the Maria Colwell case’. Maria Colwell was the first high profile death of a child in recent decades that was attributed to the fuckwittery of the welfare services.

The Committee were happy to rely on the advice of this bunch nonetheless. Liz Sayce in particular had a lot to say to the Committee. She was keen to tell the Committee of the sort of problems that ‘service users bring to us’ – did they include abusive psychiatrists, mental health staff perjuring themselves in order to secure convictions against them or their illegal detention in secure units? No, the service users complained of being bored in day hospitals. So Liz recommended that day hospitals should be shut and service users encouraged to attend college. I remember the results of Sayce’s recommendations well. The day hospitals were indeed closed down – nothing replaced them, so service users had nowhere to go at all and lost touch with their friends whom they used to meet in the day hospitals. So service users ended up being bored at home, alone. In the two years following the closure of the day hospital at the Hergest Unit, service users could be seen hanging about in the local towns destitute. A number of them died. As for ‘going to college’ – well a very small number of ‘service users’ benefited greatly from this and it turned their lives around. However Sayce’s ‘encouragement’ of such activity was interpreted by mental health teams as ‘coercion’ and certainly in north Wales numerous ‘service users’ were frog marched into college courses – they were told that they would lose social services support if they didn’t ‘take responsibility for getting better’ and enrol. Many of them did not have the academic ability needed for the courses that they had been coerced into joining and even more of them were far too fragile emotionally to cope with a college course. I knew of one course in which at the beginning of term about 15 service users enrolled at the behest of their mental health teams – every one of them withdrew before the course was half-way through and two of them were so distressed that instead of handing in essays to their tutor they handed in suicide notes and accounts of how they had been sexually abused by members of their chapel when they were children. The college ‘counselling service’ was in no way equipped to deal with the difficulties that these students were encountering. Not that the mental health team cared – once the ‘service user’ had enrolled, the mental health team ticked a box marked ‘recovered’ and forgot about them. A lot of ‘service users’ paid a very high price as a result of Liz Sayce’s advice.

No-one noticed – Sayce fucked up peoples lives all over again a few years later once she had been appointed Chief Exec of the Disability Rights Commission and a leading light on the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. It was Sayce that advised the Gov’t – what with her unique insight and being the Voice of the Service User – to close the Remploy factories on the grounds that they were ghettoes. Hundreds of Remploy staff volubly protested that they loved working at Remploy, that their disabilities were such that they couldn’t hold down other jobs – Remploy staff came forward with the most harrowing accounts of their mistreatment in previous workplaces and begged for Remploy to be reprieved. But Nurse Liz knew best and in 2012 told anyone who would listen in no uncertain terms that Service Users must be Included, that Remploy was Old Fashioned and that the Gov’t proposed Access To Work Fund was far more Empowering (it was also much cheaper and merely involved chucking a few hundred quid at a few service users to pay for simple adaptions on things like cars). The Gov’t followed Sayce’s advice and shut the Remploy factories down. Many of the former Remploy staff never worked again and are now on benefits. Furthermore I think that Theresa May et al are now proposing to whittle away at the Access To Work Fund anyway.

The Gov’t is still grappling with the advice that Liz gave them in 1998 – she recommended that health care and social care should NOT be merged. That’s why there is still such extreme inequity in the treatment of those people classed as needing ‘social care’ as compared to those whose needs are categorised as ‘medical’. But somebody was stupid enough to allow Liz to ‘lead’ on creating the Disability Agenda forming the basis of policy for the next two decades….

In Jan 2017 Liz announced her retirement from the Disability Rights Commission – she’d been shortlisted for a post as a Disability Commissioner on the European Human Rights Commission! For fuckwittery, arrogance and sheer irresponsibility, Liz is only matched by Rachel Perkins.

In 2001 David Henry took over as Chair. I can find no info about David Henry at all other than that whilst he was Chair of MIND he was given two free tickets worth £1,500 for the opening ceremony to some grand event in his capacity as ‘leader’ of a UK charity.

The present Chair, Ryan Campbell, has been in post since 2012. He was formerly the CEO of a ‘drug, alcohol and mental health charity in the south east of England’ and is currently the CEO of Demelza Hospice Care in Hindhead, Surrey. Ryan was previously involved with Age Concern and has been an expert advisor to Gov’t on the development of health services; is the author of DoH guidance to commissioning in the Third Sector; has been an advisor and taskforce member to DoH guidance on High Impact Changes in Health and Social Care (2008); and was the UK rep to the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

Ryan is also a member of something called the ‘Association of Chairs’, which seems to be no more than a collection of freeloading dipsticks who become Chairs of outfits like MIND. Ryan explains on their website that he joined the Association ‘because I need a network’. Of course you do Ryan. To propel you onwards and upwards in the face of your dismal performance in order that one day you too can bag a seat in the Lords or a place on the EHRC alongside Rachel bloody Perkins.

It is because of people like this lot that so many other people are dying and suffering in the UK’s health and welfare system.

NB. BBC News Wales and the ‘Daily Post’ online are reporting that there is pressure on Wales to provide ‘fix rooms’ in which drug users can inject heroin. North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones – he who as a young PC chauffeured Gordon Anglesea to the venues at which Anglesea molested boys and who many years later as Police and Crime Commissioner ‘made a mistake’ which resulted in Anglesea’s widow receiving 50% of his police pension although Anglesea died in prison as a convicted child abuser – is fully in support of the idea. Well it’s another great business opportunity for Dafydd and Lucille at CAIS – they can provide shooting galleries in which the CAIS clients can inject the goodies which they have been sold by their ‘peer guides’ and draw down a grant from the Welsh Gov’t to fund it all! I used to know someone who always quipped that CAIS stood for ‘Come And Inject Some’.

Anyone for co-production?

Those Who Care Are Concerned

Yesterday the Guardian reported that NHS staff were quitting ‘because pay was so poor’ – it was alleged that some NHS staff were using food banks and that some were working stacking shelves in supermarkets. This was attributed to the recent policy of limiting pay awards in the NHS to 1% and it was claimed that this was ‘damaging the NHS’. It was reported that in particular, people with mental health problems were experiencing delays and setbacks. This story emanated from claims made by an organisation called ‘NHS Providers’ which was described as representing almost all of England’s Hospitals, Mental Health Trusts and Ambulance Trusts, their spokesman being the Chief Executive, Chris Hopson. Hopson also turned up on Radio 4’s Today programme with his tale of woe, where again the alleged deleterious effect on mental health care in particular was commented upon. It was said that in recent months, the Medical Royal Colleges, the Health Trade Unions and health charities such as Cancer Research UK have all highlighted the effects on patient care of shortages of doctors, nurses, GPs and paramedics. Various representatives of the Medical Royal Colleges have previously been outed on this blog as having taken part in the neglect and abuse of patients – for example the delightful Professor Rob Poole of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I have also provided details of very bad behaviour – and research fraud – among leading lights in the Cancer Research Campaign, now known as Cancer Research UK. One of the people who starred was Nicholas Wright, who has picked up a knighthood. Furthermore, if doctors and GPs are either stacking shelves in supermarkets or using food banks they will be doing this for reasons other than being short of money – consultants and GPs all hit about 100k pa and many of them earn an awful lot more. Junior doctors and nurses do not earn as much as that but do not actually fall within the category of the ‘low paid’ – now a lot of them are leaving the NHS but talk to them about their reasons for doing this. It is nothing to do with pay. As I have stated repeatedly on this blog it is nearly always because they have standards which they feel are being compromised by the dysfunction, chaos, bullying and poor patient care that pervades so much of the NHS. The traditional get out clause of junior doctors to avoid the bullying and bullshit that rained down upon them was of course to enter General Practice, where they would in the end be self-employed and have some degree of control over their lives. But there were still hazards to be negotiated – one of the most conscientious medical students that I knew when I was young was sacked from his first post in General Practice. He remarked wryly that the main priority of the senior partner in the practice was the state of the carpet tiles and that medicine was far too much of a conservative profession to allow any trainee to disagree. This man was no firebrand – his ambition at school was to practice medicine for a while and then become a Conservative MP. He is now a hospital consultant and interestingly enough a Conservative Councillor who enjoys writing to the Daily Telegraph and Private Eye. His patients also report that he is a very good doctor – but he managed to get sacked. As for nurses – for years, nurses have been leaving nursing for other jobs if they cannot stomach what they are witnessing at work. They frequently move into teaching or lecturing, but some are so desperate to not remain in nursing that they do take up roles outside of the professions. The first person in this category that I encountered was a nurse who in 1984 was working as a waitress – she preferred to do that than participate in what was happening at Ysbyty Gwynedd which was where she had previously been employed. I have since met many more like her. Not one left nursing because of the pay – indeed if you are a nurse it is quite possible to end up on a very high salary if you go into NHS management and many of them do, particularly those with absolutely no principles at all (I’m thinking of one Grace Lewis-Parry here…). There are some very poorly paid people working in the NHS who may well be using food banks or working in a second job as well, particularly if they are the only wage earner in a family with children, but they are healthcare assistants, porters, cleaners, canteen staff and receptionists. They are treated like dirt although they are often playing a key role and I really don’t think that Mr Hopson the CEO from NHS Providers was thinking of them – he certainly didn’t mention them. Another person contributed to the debate as well, declaring the 1% pay restraint policy ‘stupid’ – that was Norman Lamb, the LibDem MP. Norman Lamb in recent months became well-known for his support for Sara Ryan and her family – Sara is the mother of Connor Sparrowhawk, the young man with learning disabilities and epilepsy who died as a result of neglect, along with hundreds of other patients, whilst in the care of Southern Health. Blame was attributed to Katrina Percy, the CEO, along with the rest of a deceitful dysfunctional Trust Board and a lying psychiatrist who simply moved to Ireland to practice after her cock-ups resulted in Connor’s death. Come on Norman, you know damn well that the death of Connor – and all the other patients – were nothing at all to do with pay restraint. The whole bloody lot of those responsible were on enormous salaries. Connor’s mum was a modestly paid academic and on her twitter feed frequently commented that she would have been sacked long ago if she’d been as bad at her job as Katrina Percy and co were – furthermore Connor’s mum had managed to look after Connor herself for most of his life without him dying. That only happened when she left him in the care of ‘professionals’.

One of the final item’s on the Today programme was another mental health related report, featuring interviews with both the CEO of the Mental Health Foundation and a ‘service user’ called Kerry. The report centred around people sectioned under the Mental Health Act being detained in police cells and Kerry was introduced as someone who had endured that experience. Kerry was actually pretty brilliant, she was very articulate, very frank about the horrors and serious deficiencies of the mental health system – but Nick Robinson the interviewer cut her off mid-flow. Because she’d already spoken and they’d run out of time. But the reason that they’d run out of time was that Nick had allotted so much of the time to the CEO of the Mental Health Foundation – who obviously was going to speak for service users, rather than the one very competent service user being allowed to reveal to the nation just how bad the whole system is. I noticed that in the Mail Online yesterday the Mental Health Foundation was also expressing concern about the Serious Problem of Women Drinking Prosecco At Lunchtime. Now if an elderly male Methodist Minister who was temperance wrote an article expressing similar concerns, he’d be publicly pilloried at worst, a figure of fun at best. But if it’s a ‘mental health charity’ no-one comments on how ridiculous and condescending it is. The Mental Health Foundation also stated that ‘1 in 3’ people will suffer from mental health problems – my God, the figure has gone up, the dreadful Paul Farmer and MIND always claimed it was ‘1 in 4’! We’re all going mad, especially women – the only solution is for the Gov’t to part with millions in the direction of the Mental Health Foundation and MIND, appoint them all to Gov’t Advisory Committees and then give them gongs. Meanwhile they will remain completely silent about the serious neglect and abuse of people who really are mentally ill (far fewer than ‘1 in 4’, which is of course why they can be so shamefully treated without an outcry) by the mental health services themselves – people like Kerry, whose opinions mattered less than those of the CEO of the Mental Health Foundation…. And just to show how effective Radio 4 is at raising awareness and combatting stigma, directly after the Today programme Andrew Marr hosted Start The Week and one of his guests described how he’d written a book about a conman who had swindled him who was a ‘bipolar maniac’ who spent huge quantities of money shamelessly. It’s called acute mania, a serious illness which should not be conflated with criminality and a lot fewer than ‘1 in 4’ or ‘1 in 3’ experience it.

All these dire predictions of the consequences of the UK Gov’t not giving mental health professionals even more money than they get already (God knows what they’re doing with it, one look at the state of the nation’s mental health system makes it quite clear that it certainly isn’t being used to benefit patients) has come at a very opportune time. A few days ago I was sent an excellent PhD thesis written by Dr Vicky Long, completed some years ago whilst she was at the University of Warwick and I have been working my way through it. The thesis is entitled ‘Challenging The Public Representation of Mental Illness, 1870-1970’ and it provides much evidence for a number of things that I’ve noticed myself during my various encounters with the UK’s caring sharing mental health services. Particularly interesting is Chapter Two of Vicky’s thesis, which consists of a detailed analysis of how mental health patients were represented within the literature produced by the National Asylum Workers Union. This is a good deal more relevant to present day concerns than non-historical/sociological geeks might imagine. NAWU later evolved into MHIWU (Mental Hospital and Institutional Workers Union), which in turn evolved into COHSE (Confederation of Health Service Employees), whose successor was UNISON, one of the most powerful players in today’s trade union movement, let alone simply within the NHS arena.

Vicky’s analysis very clearly demonstrates that this Union skilfully controlled how ‘mental patients’ were represented in the wider media, which in turn dictated how they were perceived by the general public and that the union nearly always did this in order to improve the pay and conditions of the ‘attendants’ ie. mental health nurses, rather than to improve the care and treatment of patients. Vicky’s analysis and the material that she presents from the late 1920s onwards is striking – we think of this era as being ancient history where mental health care is concerned, but the attitudes and even some of the language still exists in mental health ‘care’ today. As I read Vicky’s chapter, memories of scenarios and phrases used by staff that I had witnessed and heard at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and at Ysbyty Gwynedd came back to me.

Vicky analysed in detail the journal of the NAWU as this was the forum for representations of mental illness among asylum attendants. The NAWU was formed in 1910 as a reaction to the poor working conditions of the attendants and it focused on the gulf between the privileges and pay enjoyed by the asylum Medical Superintendents (Gwynne Williams the lobotomist and Dafydd Alun Jones in the case of the North Wales Hospital, although of course they were Medical Superintendents later on in the century) and the very poor pay and conditions of the attendants. Very early on in the NAWU’s history, it seems that the working conditions of the attendants were so bad that they did actually have a lot of fellow feeling for the ‘lunatics’. However this didn’t last. Vicky’s analysis highlights other phenomena that can still be seen among mental health professionals – battles between different unions, the influence of gender and fights over status between nurses and social workers. The NAWU journal was strongly socialist and working class and viewed membership of the rival Asylum Workers Union as an act of class betrayal. The whole thrust of Vicky’s argument is that the living conditions of the patients were only scrutinised when the situation of the staff improved.

The usual strategy of the NAWU to obtain improved pay and conditions was to focus on the unpleasantness of the patients. In 1912 there was a reference to the ‘antics of deluded and degraded ‘mental deficients’ and ‘moral perverts’ and nurses are frequently described as having to ‘manage’ difficult patients. Vicky notes that in the main text used for training asylum attendants, the terms ‘nursing’, ‘management’ and ‘control’ of patients are used interchangeably. (My actions in complaining about the north Wales mental health services are referred to on a number of occasions in my medical records as ‘antics’ and the records are dripping with references to the ‘management’ of me, as well as yes, the occasional reference to the need to ‘control’ me. Because I was writing letters of complaint – about criminal conduct on the part of mental health professionals.) In 1929, as part of the description of the job of a mental nurse, it is stated that ‘patients may be unpleasant, abusive, filthy in habits and language, or ungrateful, suspicious, unwilling and resistive….sympathy, kindliness and tact must be abundant to overflowing for the mental patient…’ Again, I have heard many of these words used by mental health professionals to describe patients. I was constantly viewed as a problem for being ‘suspicious’ and ‘unwilling’ – although the staff using such descriptions for me were detaining me illegally in the North Wales Hospital after Dr Dafydd Alun Jones had concocted a ‘deal’ with a corrupt police officer at Bangor Police Station – the nurses had documented all this in detail on my records and had also stated their unhappiness with being dragged into the ‘deal’. Yet I was pathologised for being suspicious of their motives and not wanting to waste my time in their prison. Again and again I have heard staff complain about patients who swear – indeed, at the ‘hearing’ held by Robert Bluglass into the investigation of my complaint about the North Wales Hospital (which didn’t actually cover most of my complaint or the most serious aspects of it), as part of his rationale for labelling me ‘mentally ill’, Jones maintained that I’d used ‘foul and abusive language’ in front of his young children and that anyone who does this is not mentally normal. (How I managed to swear in front of his children I do not know – I did not at the time know that he had children and had certainly never met them. But Jones was not required to provide evidence of any of it – he said that I did it, so obviously I did.) Bluglass agreed that my language was indeed shocking. Bluglass has a daughter Amanda, who fancies herself as an avant garde artist. A few years ago she took to displaying her creations on the internet. One of them was a sampler of a county cottage, below which was embroidered ‘Happy Fucking Holidays’. Interestingly enough, in his final report in which Bluglass avoided commenting on many of the gross things that had happened to me at the hands of Dafydd et al although there was documentary evidence of these things, Bluglass summed up by stating that ‘doctors and others are caring individuals’ – these were people who had illegally imprisoned me, assaulted me, repeatedly lied about me, threatened me and then when that didn’t work tried to bribe me. Oh and they were concealing the activities of a paedophile ring as well. But their goodwill and patience had no bounds…. Another reference from an early edition of the NAWU journal represents patients as ‘alien, foreign, devious and different from normal people’. The SEN in Denbigh who eventually assaulted me, Stephen Rose, at one point described me as ‘scheming and devious’ (it was never explained why) – and in another reference to my alleged ‘abnormality’, on one occasion Jones lost his temper with me (because I didn’t succumb to the threats and bribery) and he yelled at me ‘any normal woman would have some respect’.

Again and again in the NAWU journal severely ill patients are represented as anti-social and violent and this was repeatedly used to justify better wages and conditions In 1928, the journal dealt with allegations that patients were being brutally treated and abused by attendants by alleging that it was the patients who were violently attacking the staff. Arguments were mounted that attendants deserved better pay and conditions not because they were skilled and professional but because they were managing dangerous violent individuals. Accounts are based on conjecture – a ‘seemingly quiet patient’ may suddenly become ‘violent to themselves or others’, ‘another blow’ from a ‘violent patient’ ‘could well have been fatal’. On one occasion a patient less dishonoured than others – a soldier with shell-shock – published in another journal an account of the violence and abuse that he’d witnessed being dealt out by the staff in an asylum. The NAWU responded by stressing the unreliability of patients accounts. This is all very familiar. At the North Wales Hospital and at Ysbyty Gwynedd, again and again I and other patients made representations about staff assaults on ourselves and other patients that we had witnessed. Throughout the course of thirty years the response from the NHS authorities was the same – either it was the patients who had attacked the staff, or the patients ‘had misunderstood’ the situation, or the patients were all mates and were colluding with each other. On the occasion that staff injured me whilst I was a patient in the Hergest Unit, my injuries were not documented and I was not released from a locked ward until the injuries had healed. When I tried to telephone both the police and a friend to report the assault the telephone was disconnected. The assault upon me was never investigated. Despite all the allegations of ‘violent’ patients made by the north Wales mental health services and the constant stream of scare stories and confected statistics regarding ‘attacks’ on staff that the north Wales mental health services have placed in the local media, I have only ever witnessed one assault upon a member of staff, which was when a very psychotic disorientated man detained on a locked ward threw a book at a psychiatrist. That has been the sum of it. Staff are sometimes assaulted by patients, but it is not a regular occurrence. Furthermore, one of the more robust pieces of research that has been done into assaults on staff by patients in psychiatric units – there has been virtually no research conducted into abuse of patients by staff which is extraordinary really, it can only be that it just doesn’t happen! – concluded that in every case, the assault had been precipitated by staff being extremely aggressive or rude to patients. As for ‘quiet’ patients being suddenly ready to launch into terrifying violence – again, another allegation that was levelled at me. When people outside of the mental health services volubly stated that the lurid allegations made about me by mental health staff were inconsistent with what they knew of me, they were told that they ‘didn’t know’ what I was like, or that I had ‘fooled’ them or best of all that I was ‘charismatic’. Only the mental health services could see my black, black heart. But interestingly enough I have recently obtained documents from my lawyer which include letters from the lawyers that the mental health services were using themselves telling them that there was no evidence that I had ever assaulted anyone and that they had to stop saying this in affidavits. Not that it stopped the ludicrous allegations, the psychiatrists concerned then progressed to stating that they thought that I was going to kill them. No evidence at all, although a lot of evidence that they had repeatedly lied about me, even on oath – but nonetheless I could murder the whole lot of them in their beds, they just knew it.

The journal of the NAWU also contains information very reminiscent of the way that psychiatrists today describe patients who allegedly have ‘personality disorders’: ‘…cannot support themselves…cannot resist criminal impulses…not actively dangerous but are a menace to the community…no idea of…social obligations…a danger to women and children…anti-social tendencies and habits of this kind are not be cured…’ or indeed the ‘social failure’ of an individual. This could have all come from a present day psychiatric textbook.

One Claude Bartlett was elected President of the NAWU in 1926 – and he stayed in that post until 1962 no less. Throughout this time he remained a mental charge nurse and with the exception of his time as Chairman of the TUC in 1959, he restricted his activities to the field of health care. Bartlett was one of the most vocal calling for the amalgamation of the health services trade union into COHSE and he was a member of the Royal Commission whose recommendations were incorporated into the Mental Health Act of 1959. In 1959 Bartlett was stating that he was pleased with the large advances made by the Union regarding the representation of mental nurses as professionals. He commented that ‘I often wonder whether some of my trade union colleagues are not trying to break down barriers which have long since ceased to exist. It is a far cry from the lunatic attendant of less than 50 years ago to the trained and qualified psychiatric nurse of today. I am naturally proud to have played some part, small perhaps, in raising a once lowly occupation into a skilled and honoured vocation’. That was in 1959. During the 1990s a nurse at the Hergest Unit who was one of the best staff there, who really was skilled and professional, was regularly ORDERED by Dr X and Dr David Healy to telephone the police to complain about distressed patients. On one of those occasions, it was because a patient had said that he was so suicidal that he felt like chopping a gas pipe. He ended up in Walton prison on remand, although all charges were eventually dropped against him. None of those grandiose, arrogant psychiatrists saw the nurse’s role as ‘a skilled and honoured vocation’. And that nurse did not feel able to challenge any of them, although she saw the consequences of their actions. Interestingly enough the same nurse, after she retired, told me that she never applied for a position as a lecturer in Bangor University’s School of Healthcare Sciences because in north Wales she witnessed the very nurses who did not have good skills with patients applying for jobs there – her perception was that they didn’t actually like looking after patients and weren’t actually very good at it, so they became nurse tutors instead.

In 1959 and the early 1960s, COHSE’s allegedly patient centred view was undermined, suggesting that once more, the main concern of psychiatric nurses was their working conditions. At the 1959 conference, the new Mental Health Bill was debated and a conference resolution expressed concerns that there was inadequate funding for the proposed measures and the hope that mental nurses skills would be utilised in the new community care system. Psychiatric nurses were well aware that other professions might usurp their roles and threaten their careers. COHSE tried to protect nurses by framing themselves as crusaders for the users of the mental health services and leaders of public opinion. Theresa May has of course announced that a new Mental Health Act is to be passed, which will lead to far fewer people being detained against their will and will also enable them to refuse ‘treatment’. This has of course come hot on the heels of scandal after scandal in the UK mental health services, of numerous accounts of neglect and abuse and of course deaths of patients in the care of the mental health services. Have perhaps the mental health professions realised that they are about to be cut out of the picture and made redundant – because patients certainly aren’t going to agree to the shite abusive treatment that is forced upon them at present if they are given a choice – and is that why they are all busy reminding us at the moment of how they only have the concerns of patients at heart? And that the patients are Suffering because mental health professionals aren’t being paid enough? Oh, by the way, in the late 50s/60s when COHSE were worried about their jobs and pay, they organised demonstrations and pickets. Stand by Theresa, there’ll be a March through central London to show us all how much they Care – all the usual culprits will be there, the BMA, the RCN, the Royal Colleges, MIND and Paul bloody Farmer, Peter Beresford and Rachel Perkins and poor old Jeremy Corbyn will be completely taken in by the whole lot of them and will join in, thinking that he’s helping people who Care. Meanwhile psychiatric patients will continue to be tasered whilst sectioned in hospital, suffocated to death whilst being ‘restrained’, prescribed ‘medication’ that harms or even kills them etc etc. In fact I think I heard on the Today programme that a National Health Action Party has been established to field candidates in the forthcoming election. The Top Doctors must be in trouble then, is there a scandal on the way? Has one of them been arrested for doing something that they shouldn’t have, perhaps removing perfectly healthy bits of the body after telling the unsuspecting patient that they had cancer a la Dr Ian Paterson? Or has another Harold Shipman been discovered?

As for Claude Bartlett’s claims in 1959 that asylums and the mental nursing profession had been transformed, well I think that needs to be taken with a very big pinch of salt. After a visit to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, the Health Minister Enoch Powell was so appalled by what he saw that he is reputed to have told the assembled ‘professionals’ that he would not allow them to do this to people – Powell returned to London and announced the proposed closure of 75,000 psychiatric hospital beds over the next 15 years. (Of course when Powell witnessed something terrible, Gwynne the lobotomist was Medical Superintendent at Denbigh. Presumably Gwynne was so used to imprisoning, neglecting, abusing and indeed killing people that he had become complete immune to the idea that some people would not appreciate what was going on, hence he felt able to proudly throw open the doors of Denbigh to the Health Minster. Obviously the result of years of cap-doffing and toadying from small town society who could rely on the hideous Gwynne to deal with anyone who was a bit of a nuisance to them. COHSE really freaked out at Powell’s proposals and resurrected the spectre of the dangerous patient (they forgot their user-friendly bit) and wanted nurses paid danger money. COHSE were particularly irked with Powell’s proposals to only place psychiatric patients in Rampton, Broadmoor and Moss Side as a last resort. They also maintained that Powell’s policy of discharging patients on prescription would lead to a nation of drug addicts. Once more psychiatric patients were represented as violent criminals and Vicky Long suggests that this stemmed more out of the fear of the threat to the jobs, future and status of the mental nursing profession than any concern over more outpatient care. Again, I saw something similar when I was a patient at the North Wales Hospital in 1986/87. At the time the UK Gov’t were making much noise regarding closing down places like Denbigh and transferring patients into community care. All the nurses at Denbigh were raging about this, stating that the facilities in the community weren’t there (which was to be fair completely true) and that some of the very vulnerable patients would never cope (which again they didn’t). But the same nurses were concealing and colluding with the most appalling wrongdoing on the part of Dafydd Alun Jones et al – they KNEW that patients were in there illegally banged up, never having been assessed by anyone but had simply been arrested because they’d crossed the path of Jones or one of his mates. They KNEW that some of those patients were not ‘schizophrenic’ or ‘deluded’ as was being diligently documented. And one of those nurses, Iola Edwards – who was one of those who expressed such concern regarding the fate of the patients once Denbigh had shut down – actively stopped a young woman from telling me any more, when she heard the young woman begging me to help her and claiming that she had been abducted, held in an attic ‘by a doctor’ with a group of other men and molested. (Would you know anything about this perchance Dafydd, after all your mistress was named in the Waterhouse Report as having colluded with a paedophile ring whilst she was Director of Gwynedd Social Services). That young woman disappeared within hours – Iola Edwards obviously knew what had happened to her and must have been instrumental in flagging up to someone in authority that the young woman had told me what had happened to her, so they got her out of there quick. I bet they didn’t let her go though, or take her to the police. And of course the community care provided after Denbigh eventually shut was dreadful – because it was managed and staffed by the same people who ran and staffed Denbigh. Did anybody really imagine that their values and standards would suddenly change just because someone gave them offices and clinics in a different building?

The NAWU dwelt on some other familiar themes as well. In the 1930s their journal carried reports on the experimental use of leucotomies and ECT and the Government’s Athlone Report stated that ‘medical staff now require highly skilled mental health nurses to assist’. Although the historian of nursing Peter Nolan argues that physical treatments threatened to erode nursing skills by reducing nurses to doctors assistants, COHSE’s predecessor was enthusiastic about the ‘new therapies’. During the 1940s and 50s there was a reconceptualization of the image of the psychiatric patient as that of a client or guest. By 1961 glossy photos showing the luxurious aspects of public hospitals were displayed monthly in the journal and hospitals were described as if they were hotels. But when the Hergest Unit was built at Ysbyty Gwynedd there was much excitement and boasting about the new facilities – of course they were very much better than what had been on offer at Denbigh, but huge cracks soon appeared in the service, which still contained the former staff and managers from Denbigh.

The NAWU also reflected two other ideas concerning psychiatric patients that were expressed by some professionals – that either sterilisation or euthanasia would be a good idea. In 1929 the Gov’t considered sterilising ‘mental defectives’ and they were depicted as an economic threat to sane ratepayers. In 1934 Prof JA Berry, Director of Medical Services at Stoke Colney, Bristol, argued that some in his care should be killed, a ‘kindly euthanasia’ being the ‘only really kindly treatment’. A Dr EGL Goffe, a Kingston physician, suggested no other alternative for ‘idiots’ than the ‘lethal chamber’ as ‘such people should not be a drag on the community…a waste of money and energy keeping them alive…’ Many doctors wrote in favour of sterilisation – however one Dr Neil Montgomery showed an acute awareness of class power abuse issuing from doctor to patient, commenting that it tended to be the poor who should be recommended for sterilisation and at the same time expressed sentiments of duty to the patients which were not expressed by the working class members of the NAWU. (Remind anyone of the current Tory Govt’s new policy that people claiming tax credits for a third child can only do so if they can demonstrate that the child resulted from rape?) In July 1935, the cartoonist for the MHIWU journal (as it had then become) depicted the Board of Control Chairman’s view – a full page image of a physically deformed figure whose featureless ‘shadow’ fell menacingly over Britain. The figure was represented with palms outstretched, recalling the belief expressed in the journal by doctors, judges, Poor Law guardians and the Board of Control that ‘mental defectives’ were socially inefficient and an economic drain on the resources of the ‘normal’ population. Obviously a bunch of shirkers and skivers like all those people that George Osborne seemed to know of…

In 1963 an editorial in the journal commented that if the Lord Chancellor and Lunacy Commissioners were anxious for the welfare of the patients, the very first thing that they should turn their attention to is the conditions of asylum services to attract and retain the best types of men and women. Sounds familiar – here comes a nurses pay claim, just after revelations that patients were being treated dreadfully. By the end of the ‘60s, the situation of the patients had not improved. Barbara Robb’s famous expose of the appalling treatment of the mentally ill in hospitals, ‘Sans Everything: A Case To Answer’, elicited personal attacks on Robb and COHSE complained of a ‘witch-hunt’ atmosphere and parodied Robb’s expose as ‘Knock Everything’. COHSE was not the only body representing psychiatric nurses – the RCN did as well and in 1970 their conference attacked psychiatric nurses conditions of work. The Chairman of their Psychiatric Committee suggested the patients posed the main limitation to nurses work. Once more a dire representation of your average psychiatric patient was constructed, with it being claimed that being spat at, kicked, scratched and bitten was all in a day’s work and that nurses spent much of their times separating patients who were fighting or warding off assaults on themselves.

The journal of the NAWU also reflected the gender battle that took place within it’s own ranks. From the 1920s onwards there was much opposition from male asylum attendants to women nurses working on male wards. Sick patients were portrayed as violent anti-social misfits whose violent and sexually depraved behaviour would only increase at the hands of kindly female nurses – a similar argument was used at the Hergest Unit as the rationale for their callous treatment of those whom they labelled ‘personality disordered’. Indeed, a suicide attempt by one such patient was constructed by Dr Dafydd Alun Jones as being the result of ‘ire’ of all things. Yet Nursing Times, a journal dominated by women, opposed the NAWU, pointing out that ‘not a single complaint of any kind has been made by the female nurses’ – furthermore, a female nurse was quoted as commenting that constructing all ‘mental cases’ as ‘depraved’ was an ‘insult’ to many patients. This depiction of patients as violent and sexually perverted diminished when it was no longer in accordance with the image that the Union was trying to establish. This turnaround confused members – there is written evidence from one male nurse demonstrating that he was puzzled as to how the Union could have ‘forgotten’ what patients were like.

Throughout the twentieth century, the journal of the NAWU repeatedly published articles on themes that are still pursued at present. An article in the 1940s written by a patient, ‘David’, was the first time that the journal has offered any degree of respect to a patient’s account. David was completely uncritical of his treatment and maintained that it could only have been bettered if the asylum staff were paid more. This is startlingly reminiscent of much discourse from present day ‘service user involvement’. Two of the biggest figures in the UK in this field are Peter Beresford and Rachel Perkins. Beresford is a former social worker and this is very obviously still a major part of his identity and Perkins is the former clinical director of Springfield Hospital. Perkins oversaw a disaster, including a number of murders, and Springfield was subjected to damning comments at a subsequent public inquiry. Neither Beresford or Perkins have ever spoken out about serious abuse and neglect in the mental health services, criminal activity on the part of the ‘professionals’ or the problems of dishonest expert witnesses in psychiatry. Their concerns tend to revolve around ‘discrimination’, ‘stigma’ and the need for more funding and higher staff pay. Some years ago I received a series of very angry e mails from someone who had completed a PhD with Beresford, demanding to know why I would not ‘come out’ as an academic who was a ‘service user’, telling me that Peter Beresford could ‘help’ me. I have made it clear in my publications that I do not hide my involvement with the mental health services but I find the ‘service users movement’ for the most part strangely deradicalised, denatured and institutionalised and I explained this to the person who e mailed me. They became angrier and angrier and made it clear that I was some sort of traitor by not joining the merry band who remain silent about serious wrongdoing but who campaign for higher pay for the people involved in this.

Another article in the NAWU journal from the early middle years of the twentieth century concerned the activities of a charity dedicated to the after care of discharged asylum patients, supposedly committed to their economic and social reintegration. The charity’s President had commented that the work of the charity assisted the state by producing good citizens. Does this sound familiar to you Paul Farmer?

Another article published in the 20s stressed the important of asylum attendants completing the Certificate of the Medico-Psychological Association, in order that the work would be seen as highly skilled and professional. Nurses these days are encouraged to go for postgrad education, because nursing is ‘highly skilled’ and ‘professional’. Some years ago I was forwarded an e mail from a ward manager at the Hergest Unit which frankly declared that he didn’t want to do an Masters because he’d found completing a Bachelor’s degree very difficult, but his boss, the nursing manager Lena Henry, had told him that it would make the Hergest Unit look good if he did enrol for a Masters. Meanwhile patients died.

Again, as far back as the 1920s, the NAWU’s journal was maintaining that the general public only saw the worst side of mental hospitals and that if the public were allowed to enter such hospitals they would receive enlightenment. I witnessed two such Tours of North Korea myself, one in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and one at the newly opened Hergest Unit. Local dignitaries were guided around the best parts of the building by the nicest members of staff. At Denbigh it occurred on Christmas morning when the Mayor and his entourage paid a visit. They were all very friendly, but of course patients clamoured to desperately tell the Mayor et al what was actually happening to them in there. The accompanying nurses used obviously tried and tested techniques to deflect the conversation onto other matters, such as the Christmas presents that the staff had given us that morning – they did give us thoughtful presents and they gave us a good spirited Christmas dinner as well – but a lot of the patients that the Mayor met had been detained illegally, although he wasn’t told that. The nurses did tell me that the Mayor visited the hospital every Christmas morning – ah, so they knew that he would be coming then! When the doors of the newly opened Hergest Unit were thrown open to some local councillors I took the opportunity to tell them that one of the psychiatrists there was having sex with the patients. A sharp-witted nurse interjected with ‘that man does not have any beds in this hospital’. No, but they let him in every Tuesday to hold outpatient’s clinics…

In 1969 COHSE’s journal concerned itself with the struggle for status between psychiatric nurses and psychiatric social workers. The social work profession made it very clear that they considered themselves superior and expressed concern that nurses would ‘muscle in’ on community work. Interestingly enough, I know a psychiatric nurse who trained in the 70s who considers that social work training is too political, concentrates too much on the identity and place in the world of the social worker and does not pay enough attention to the concept of duty to one’s clients. This nurse believed that this was what lay behind so many of the problems that patients experienced with the Arfon Community Mental Health Team – whether she knew that some members of that team were doing the bidding of people who were facilitating a paedophile gang I do not know. I note that Chapter Three of Dr Long’s thesis is concerned with the development of psychiatric social work. I look forward to reading her account of the evolution of the profession of which Hywel Williams was such a proud member.

Reading Chapter Two of Dr Long’s thesis one can only conclude that very little has changed – unions representing mental health staff in the UK have been very much more concerned with the pay and conditions of their members and have been prepared to denigrate the people that they are paid to care for to achieve this, ruthlessly manipulating public opinion. Was it really All A Very Long Time Ago and that Things Are Different Now? Well when I was in Denbigh a nurse called Bob reminisced about how he used to ‘manage’ the patients in his earlier years – he told me that the nurses had to make the patients more frightened of them than they were of their hallucinations. Bob told me that in 1987 – he may still be alive. As many of the older Denbigh nurses are. It is indeed informative to go on the website of the grandly titled North Wales Hospital Historical Society, which is actually a forum for former staff. There are a number of threads where staff have been chatting to each other – those poorly paid nurses who were constantly in danger from patients are certainly enjoying retirement. They discuss their exotic foreign holidays and one of them has a yacht that he talks about. Whilst I was in the Heddfan Unit a former Denbigh nurse who used to pop in there to do a bit of agency work told me that he owned a property in Florida and he spends his time between there and his place in north Wales. By the way, as mental health workers, all these people were entitled to retire at 55 yrs old with a full pension. Tory Cuts anyone? I know of someone else in north Wales who is both a psychiatric nurse and a psychiatric social worker. This man told me years ago that as a student, he was one of those who exposed the Ely Hospital Scandal – he claimed to have punched a nurse whom he saw assault an elderly man before he mobilised the students. Yet this man sectioned people in Denbigh, he knew about the horrors of Prestwood homes, he knows exactly how bad the mental health services are and he watched highly inappropriate people qualify as social workers when he worked in social work education at Coleg Menai. He has never spoken out about any of it. He now has a leading role in MIND in north Wales. Do you fancy punching a few other people Geoff? Starting with your senior colleagues at MIND who pay your salary and are doing such damage…

Bring on the protests then. Of those who are only protesting because they Care.
