It’s The Sun Wot Won It

Readers of my vintage will recognise the title of this blog post – it was the headline that The Sun ran on 11 April 1992 as they crowed about their role in the unexpected Conservative victory at the General Election. The Tories had not expected to win, Norman Lamont’s handling of the economy was not proving very successful and they were expecting a thrashing at the polls. In the days leading up to the election, the right wing press had metamorphosed into vehicles of abuse against Neil Kinnock and the Labour Party, culminating in the The Sun’s notorious front page on the day of the election which screamed ‘If Kinnock wins today will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights?’

I’ve been reminded of that particular hate campaign because I’m currently reading Gyles Brandreth’s autobiography ‘Breaking The Code’ in which Brandreth details his selection as Tory candidate for Chester, his subsequent election as MP for Chester and his ‘political career’ – Brandreth and his chums spent much time chortling smugly as the UK media hurled abuse and not infrequently downright lies at the Labour Party. Interestingly enough though, even Brandreth didn’t expect a Tory victory.

In my post ‘I Want Serious Money Now Please’ I detailed the reasons which caused me to believe that Brandreth must have known that his predecessor as Conservative MP for Chester, Sir Peter Morrison, was molesting under-aged boys and why I thought that Brandreth must also have known about the allegations of a paedophile ring operating in north Wales and Cheshire. Morrison was of course known to be visiting children’s homes in north Wales and one person made a statement alleging that Morrison had raped him when he was 14, at the infamous Elm Guest House near Barnes Common, just around the corner from Gyles’s home. Boys from north Wales were known to have been trafficked to the Elm Guest House and to locations in Chester.

Gyles’s book, which is based on his diaries, begins the account in 1990 when he decides to embark on a political career. In between the constant name-dropping of members of the Royal Family and folk from showbiz and boasting about his performances as characters such as Baron Hardup in panto, Gyles describes how he ingratiates himself to leading lights in the Conservative Party and pretty much randomly sets his eyes on a few potential seats, one being Chester. As in the case of his Oxford Union contemporary Ann Widdecombe (see post ‘Doris Karloff – Honest About Her Expenses But Not Much Else’), Gyles knows nothing about the constituencies that he aspires to represent and just like Ann gains his knowledge from visiting the local public library just before meeting the selection panel. Gyles describes his visit to Chester library and how he soon understood the constituency, but he notes whilst leafing through copies of the local papers that the sitting MP Sir Peter Morrison – who is standing down at the next election, hence the vacancy – is never mentioned. However Gyles has looked up Peter Morrison as well and he likes what he discovers – an impeccable profile: Eton, Oxford, White’s, Pratt’s, the son of Lord Margdale, a brother who’s an MP and a sister who is Woman of the Bedchamber to the Queen no less! Gyles can’t wait to meet him – he soon does, he goes to visit Morrison at Morrison’s house, 81 Cambridge Street, London SW1.  Gyles is truly bowled over – not because Morrison is charming or witty or engaging, but because Morrison is really posh. When Gyles gets to meet the members of the City of Chester Conservative Association he finds that a lot of them are really wowed by the very poshness of Morrison too – they’re particularly impressed because Morrison has pictures of himself at Eton in his bog. There’s another reason why Gyles is starry eyed about Morrison – Morrison is PPS to Thatcher (Morrison occupied this role between 1990-92) and Gyles suspects that Morrison might even share an office with Thatcher! Gyles is one of those Tories who just loved her and would do anything to touch the hem of her cloak…

When he begins hobnobbing with the City of Chester Conservative Association, Gyles meets someone even more worth knowing than a Sir who’s sister’s vocation in life is toadying to HM the Queen. Gyles discovers that the Duke of Westminster is President of the Association! He’s so posh that the rest of the Association have to call him ‘Your Grace’. Gyles also knows that the Duke of Westminster is one of the richest men in the UK and is a close friend of the Royal Family. Unfortunately though Gyles oversteps the mark when he finds himself in the presence of the Duke and calls him ‘Gerald’ rather than ‘Your Grace’. It’s a black mark, but thanks to several hours of intensive toadying by Gyles’s wife Michele (the lady who wants Serious Money, as described in a previous post) who remembers to grovel in the right manner, the black mark against Gyles is forgiven. There is another budding Conservative candidate up against Gyles, a Jacqui Lait, who it is mentioned has been beavering away for the Tories for years and who Gyles and his wife have to admit is very good. In fact she’s so good that she even knows Things About Europe and Michele is sure that Jacqui will be selected. Another budding candidate, described as ‘Peter Morrison’s man’, is mentioned but not expanded upon – it is merely observed that he doesn’t seem to have a spouse. Amazingly enough though poor old Jacqui is blown out and the Association selects Gyles! I cannot help but wonder whether this might have something to do with Gyles having previously spent many months toadying to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh – Gyles was busy raising many thousands of pounds for the Royal Family in the guise of charity work – and of course all those letters that he’d written to senior figures in the Tories that he’d got to know from his time at Oxford or in showbiz. Gyles certainly gets around – parties at Jeffrey Archer’s, (parties at Robert Maxwell’s as well, Gyles isn’t fussy) and endless social engagements where he rubs noses with Royals. Well what does working your arse off for the Conservatives for years mean in comparison to Gyles’s ruthless networking? Jacqui Lait must have felt like voting Labour after that.

Once Gyles was selected did he relocate to Chester and get to know the constituency? Not exactly. He went straight ‘home’ to London, noting how much he’d missed it having to spend so much time in Chester telling everyone there how committed he was to them. People kept asking him difficult questions about whether he would be living in the constituency and sending his children to local schools. Poor old Gyles had to explain that although of course he would be living in the constituency, his children would remain at school in London. Gyles’s idea of ‘living in the constituency’ was actually to rent a very expensive house there whilst he pissed off around the rest of the UK appearing in panto or dining with influential Conservatives. He spent a lot of time in the early months of 1991 schmoozing with Peter Morrison as well as of course with the Royals. Gyles hobnobbed with David Hunt the Secretary of State for Wales, the Deputy Chief Whip Alistair Goodlad, Neil and Christine Hamilton – he really likes them, they’re as much fun as Peter Morrison! -Chris and Lavender Patten (Gyles didn’t know them, but a mate of his introduced him which was essential what with Patten being Chair of the Conservative Party) and numerous others.

Gyles ensures that his family are seen around Chester as well – although Michele hates the place and bellyaches about all the travelling between there and London as well as the cost of that travelling and of course his kids are still at school in London. The public schools of Chester might not have been good enough for Brandreth’s kids, but in June 1991 he does manage to tempt his daughter up to the Chester Regatta and Flower Show, where he makes sure that she ends up in all the photos. Gyles observes that it’s known that the Labour candidate – a dreadful little oik who Gyles can’t stand – is having marital problems, so there won’t be too many happy family snaps taken during his campaign.

In July Gyles is in serious need of a break, all the toadying and wining and dining having really taken it out of him, not to mention the bother of having to go to Chester on a regular basis although of course he does live in the constituency, so Gyles and Michele pop off to Venice! He has a lovely time and begins to plan his career as a Cabinet Minister and summarises by observing ‘Ain’t life grand!’.

In September, Gyles attends ‘a gala event in the Association’s calender’, Peter Morrison’s Annual Pimms Party. Gyles notes that the party workers fall into two camps – a group who believe that Morrison is past his sell-by date, has let himself go, is out of touch, gives out all the wrong signals and believe that he’s ‘let the seat slide’ and another group who ‘love the grandeur of the man’ and of course who also love the pictures of him at Eton in the bog. Also in September, Gyles watches the Granada drama ‘Thatcher: The Final Days’. Gyles is appalled at the ‘demonisation’ of Peter Morrison in this drama – Peter was blamed for Thatcher losing the leadership to John Major. Gyles observes that ‘in the papers the knives are out for him’, ‘this helps explain why he’s getting out’ and ‘it may explain the drinking’. However Gyles notes that ‘the programme didn’t portray him as either a lush or an old queen, though we can see he’s the one and we assume he’s the other’. Gyles remembers that it was a Jeremy Hanley who at the time of Morrison’s appointment as Thatcher’s PPS quipped that she’d ‘got herself an aide who knows how to carry a handbag’.

So there was a lot of ribaldry about Morrison’s homosexuality then. But just read what Gyles says next: ‘at Sunday’s do at Peter’s place one or two were whispering behind their hands about his alleged sexual preferences – but I don’t think they know that Michele and I have been told several times on the doorstep – in no uncertain terms – that the MP is a ‘disgusting pervert’ who is ‘into little boys’.

They couldn’t have made it much clearer Gyles.

Gyles is undeterred! In Oct 1991 he joins Peter Morrison at the NFU meeting and then Gyles busies himself preparing his speech for the Tory Party Conference. He’s impressed to find that the Conference is so stage-managed that Gyles actually describes it as ‘rigged’. Gyles’s own speech is on the subject of the Citizen’s Charter! Of course – being one as dedicated to the welfare of the citizens as Gyles is. Gyles is bowled over by the guest of honour at the Conference – it’s a man called William Hague, PPS to Norman Lamont, the Norman who at that time was screwing the economy. After the excitement of the Conference – Michele was so wowed by Thatcher that she had ‘tears in her eyes’ as Thatcher swept the stage -it was entertaining Judy Hurd, wife of Douglas the then Foreign Secretary, who was the guest of honour at Chester racecourse charity lunch. Then it was the State Opening of Parliament – to which Gyles had been invited by the Duke of Edinburgh! November 1991 also saw the death of Robert Maxwell. Gyles reminisces about going to parties at Maxwell’s house and admits that Maxwell was a ‘monster and a crook’. Gyles and Michele’s company did a lot of work for Maxwell nonetheless.

By Dec 1991 Michele is so pissed off with Chester and the boring tedious oiks to whom she constantly has to be civil that she berates Gyles for ever applying for the candidacy there. She had wanted him to wait for a suitable seat in London to come up, but tells him that he was just determined to become the candidate for Chester: ‘you’d have walked over your dying granny to get it. I know you.’ Gyles observes in response ‘She does’.

One presumes that Gyles’s granny didn’t actually die during the process of him pursuing his goal of becoming the Conservative MP for Chester. However quite a few other people died during that time who were not a million miles away from Chester. They were the victims of the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal. There had been premature deaths of those children for years, but things really started hotting up in 1991, the year that Gyles began to bust a gut in order to take over the seat of a man who was, he knew, a child molester. Let’s just look at a few things that happened in 1991 and a few of the events in the years before, which led to all the action in 1991.

In 1987 Alison Taylor, a social worker for Gwynedd Social Services, blew the whistle on serious child abuse in north Wales. Alison was dismissed after doing this. She refused to keep quiet however. She met with Councillors, representatives of the North Wales Police Authority and police officers themselves. In Jan 1987 she wrote to Margaret Thatcher the PM and described abuse that she had witnessed.

Something else happened in 1987 as well which involved the two of the people whom Brandreth found such good fun and whose company he cultivated in 1991, namely Peter Morrison and Neil Hamilton. In 1987 it was alleged that Morrison had joined a group of MPs including Michael Grylls, Neil Hamilton and Michael Brown, who took money from Ian Greer on behalf of third party clients. In the Cash for Questions Inquiry which was later held, Ian Greer Associates admitted that Morrison received payments after Morrison ceased to be an MP. Hansard quotes Greer as stating that he made two commission payments, perhaps three, ‘for client referrals’ to Morrison between 1993-94.

In Feb 1988 Alison Taylor wrote to Tony Newton, the Health Minister regarding the child abuse happening in north Wales.

In July 1991 a letter was sent to the Chief Constable of North Wales Police informing him that there were concerns being expressed that a paedophile ring was operating in north Wales. In August 1991 a police investigation began into the abuse of children in care in Clwyd. In Sept 1991 HTV broadcast a film about Alison Taylor’s allegations regarding abuse in the children’s homes in Gwynedd – the home manager featured in the film, Nefyn Dodd, was trafficking the children to Dolphin Square in London to a Tory lobbyist and speechwriter of Thatcher’s who had an apartment there, although this wasn’t revealed in the film. In Dec 1991 the Independent on Sunday published an article about child abuse in north Wales. In Dec 1991 the North Wales Police expanded their investigation to include abuse in children’s homes in Gwynedd.

Throughout the late 80s/early 90s there were a steady stream of young people who had grown up in care in north Wales found dead. There were also a number of convictions for abuse against child care workers in north Wales. A number of people were tried at Court in Chester. Gyles was not unaware of the existence of the British judicial system. On one of his many jollies, in Sept 1991 Gyles went to lunch at the Old Bailey ‘as a guest of the Sheriff’. Gyles accidentally walked into a Court in session and was very impressed with the barrister at work. He asked a Clerk who the barrister was and was told that it was Michael Mansfield who ‘looks after the IRA and that sort’. Sadly Mr Mansfield – nor any of his radical lawyer colleagues – looked after the people who were being abused by the social services and mental health services in north Wales. Whilst some of them were being molested by Peter Morrison.

Like Gyles I can remember 1991 very clearly, although I wasn’t keeping a diary. I remember it well because whilst Gyles and Michele were grovelling to the Duke of Westminster and being impressed by Peter Morrison in early 1991, I was hounded out of a job at St George’s Hospital Medical School after the network of the Top Doctors who were concealing the paedophile ring that Morrison was involved with stalked me (see posts ‘St George’s Hospital Medical School, 1989/1990’ and ‘A Network Stretching To London?’). There were also a number of attempts by the Top Doctors in north Wales to have me imprisoned for serious offences after they perjured themselves and to have me declared dangerous and banged up without trial (see posts ‘The Night Of The (Dr Chris) Hunter’ and ‘The Sordid Role Of Sir Robert Francis QC’). Top Doctors at St George’s Hospital Medical School and Springfield Hospital colluded with this, although they knew about the criminal activity and sexual abuse of patients by their colleagues in north Wales (see post ‘Some Very Eminent Psychiatrists From London…’).

Ain’t life grand!

In 1992, as it became clear that there would be an election before long, Gyles began an endless round of photo-opportunities with VIPs. He was well aware that a lot of people in the country were not faring very well because he kept meeting them, even in a place like Chester. It all became a bit of a pain in the bum for Gyles and Michele as they were obliged to meet the small potatoes who bored them and held meetings in dull little halls instead of the splendour of the Grosvenor Hotel and sometimes Gyles and Michele even found themselves wasting their time with people who weren’t going to vote Conservative.

There were high spots however – staying at Neil and Christine’s grand place in Nether Alderly (‘Mrs T is their goddess’) where Neil told Gyles that he expected to be a Minister soon because the ‘Whip’s Office look after their own, that’s their job’; drinks with Lord Waddington when he visited Chester; a visit from Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd who was told by Central Office that he could spend ‘forty-five minutes in Chester’; another visit from David Hunt the Secretary of State for Wales (who was of course at that time sitting in the Welsh Office along with the crooked lawyer Andrew Park and the corrupt Medical Ombudsman Professor Robert Owen concealing the barrel of shit in north Wales); Gyles dined with Shirley Porter (best remembered for her gerrymandering in Westminster Council as well as for the sale of those three cemeteries for literally pennies when they were worth millions and then departing to live in Israel to avoid paying the enormous fine after her conviction); had sherry with the Dean of the Cathedral; lunched with the Retired Masonic Fellowship (Masonic corruption did of course play a big role in the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, particularly in terms of the Masonic connections between the North Wales Police and the corrupt lawyers and judges on the Chester and Wales Circuit); received a visit from Jeffrey Archer, then Michael Heseltine, then John Major, then Tony Newton, then Peter Lilley! The Tories brought all the big guns out for Chester in 1992 then – I wonder why there was such desperation over that particular seat?

Gyles decided to give his own campaign a little boost by writing letters to the local papers using pseudonyms, telling everyone what an impressive candidate that Gyles Brandreth was.

So what was happening in north Wales whilst Gyles did all this? The allegations that children in care had been sexually molested – particularly boys in the homes Bryn Estyn and Bryn Alyn near Wrexham, about 12 miles from Chester, came thick and fast. In Jan 1992, Dean Nelson, a journalist preparing a story for the Independent, returned to north Wales to look for evidence against Gordon Anglesea, a senior officer with the North Wales Police. (Anglesea was finally convicted and imprisoned for abusing boys in care in Wrexham last year.) In the same month that Gyles dined with the Retired Masonic Fellowship – March 1992 – police carried out dawn raids in Wrexham and arrested 16 men and one woman, all but one being former staff of Bryn Estyn. ‘No evidence’ of pornography or a paedophile ring was discovered and 16 of those arrested were released with no charges by the end of the day. (In the following years, a number of them were arrested again, convicted and imprisoned for the abuse of boys in care in north Wales.)

In the hours leading up to polling day, Gyles notes in his diary how deeply unsavoury Labour activists are – ‘ugly’, ‘red-faced’, ‘appallingly overweight’. He does concede however that they do a bit better than the Tory activists in meeting ‘the old dears’ during the campaign. Sadly for the Labour Party, meeting the old dears wasn’t enough and on 10 April 1992 Gyles was elected MP for Chester. How chuffed he was! The first person outside of his constituency to congratulate him seems to have been David Hunt, Secretary of State for Wales, who sent him a letter on official Welsh Office paper which even had the address of the Welsh Office printed in Welsh. Shortly after Gyles’s victory, his old mucker the Duke of Edinburgh and HM the Queen visit Chester to distribute Maundy money – the Chester Tories were delighted to see them. Letters of congratulation to Gyles then came thick and fast from John Major, Michael Portillo and Norman St John Stevas!

There is then a gap in Gyles’s account until 23 April 1992 when he notes that Frankie Howerd has died.

During the two weeks or so that Gyles keeps us guessing with regard to his own activities, an event in Brighton took place which no-one with an interest in the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal will ever forget. On 18 April 1992 a fire broke out in a flat at a party – a number of people attending the party had formerly been in care in north Wales or were close to people who had been. Five people were killed – two died from multiple injuries when they tried to jump to safety, one died after losing his grip whilst hanging onto the building at a height and two people died of smoke inhalation after being trapped in the flat. Seven people managed to escape by climbing down a drainpipe at the back of the building and several other people impaled themselves on railings after jumping to safety. A man called Trevor Carrington allegedly confessed to starting the fire – he was found dead days after his ‘confession’.

A verdict of unlawful killing was eventually returned regarding the arson attack. One witness has stated that John Allen, the owner of the Bryn Alyn Community where children were abused, told him that he would meet them at the party but Allen never turned up. John Allen is currently in prison after being convicted of abusing children in care in north Wales. John Allen also ran a business in child porn and owned a number of brothels in London and Brighton to which he trafficked boys who’d been in care in north Wales. One former resident of the children’s homes in north Wales who didn’t die in the fire but who was seriously injured alleged that the former residents of the children’s homes had been murdered and that they had knowledge of sexual liaisons involving politicians. This man later gave evidence against John Allen in Court. He was found dead days afterwards. For further details of the Brighton fire see posts ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’ and ‘Updates, Common Themes and News, May 5 2017’.

In the days and weeks that followed the murder of five people who might well have been able to act as witnesses against Peter Morrison and others, Gyles got down to business in his new role as MP for Chester. In his maiden speech in the Commons he mentioned that ‘Peter [Morrison] served the Prime Minister’s illustrious predecessor so ably and so loyally’. Michele had by now started bitching about the low salaries of MPs but Gyles notes that at least now that he’s been elected his train and air fares are paid for. He gloats about making an insulting speech directed at Neil Kinnock which he passes off as his own but has actually been scripted word for word by the Whips’ Office. He mentions the presence of Sir Nicholas Fairbairn in the House and describes him as ‘mad’ and ‘perpetually drunk’. Fairbairn has since been accused by a woman whose father was friends with him of molesting her when she was a child.

Not that the world had yet finished with anyone who was still alive who might be able to give evidence against the people who abused children in care in north Wales. In May 1992, an Early Day Motion was tabled by Plaid MP Elfyn Llwyd opposing the closure of Garth Angharad. Garth Angharad was described as a ‘hospital for mentally abnormal criminals’ and was owned by Paul Hett, a struck-off solicitor who was later condemned at the Waterhouse Inquiry and who also owned and ran a number of ‘residential schools’ in which children were abused. People who alleged that they’d been abused in care tended to find themselves in Garth Angharad. For the names and backgrounds of everyone who signed that EDM please see posts ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’ and ‘More On Those Who Signed That Early Day Motion’.

Thus Gyles’s career in politics was launched. As well as the five people who died in the Brighton fire, in 1992 two other former residents in children’s homes in north Wales were found dead as well. In Sept 1992 The Observer ran a story on child abuse in north Wales children’s homes and two former residents appeared on TV accusing Gordon Anglesea of having abused them. After the programme was broadcast another former resident rang the BBC and made further allegations. Not that any of this is mentioned in Gyles’s book – although he does document other scandals such as David Mellor’s affair and the subsequent tabloid revelations.

So whilst Conservative Central Office flooded Chester with Tory bigwigs prior to the election and Tories in Chester discussed Morrison’s ‘sexual preferences’, the folk on the doorstep told Brandreth that Morrison was molesting under-aged boys. Which indeed he was. The whole of the City of Chester Conservative Association will have known what Morrison was doing yet no-one said a word to the police who were investigating an alleged paedophile ring a few miles down the road. Neither did any of them speak up after the Jillings Investigation (see post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake’ for the details of the Jillings investigation and just how dreadful the abuse of children that had gone on was) or during or after the Waterhouse Inquiry, the cover-up organised by William Hague ie. the guest of honour at the Tories Conference who had so impressed Gyles four years previously. Chester is renowned as a centre of law. My documents are littered with the names of legal professionals and judges in Chester who were party to perjury. Gyles will have come across them – it would not be possible to be the MP for Chester and not encounter them. Gyles rubbed noses with other people who have been involved in the cover up or who knew what was going on and kept quiet, such as David Waddington, Matthew Parris and Edwina Currie. As for Norman St John Stevas, that devotee of the Queen Mother, who was another to congratulate Gyles on his election victory – well when I worked at St George’s, there was someone else who worked there who was a young gay man well-acquainted with the gay scene at the time. He told me then that there was a problem with some politicians abusing children. One name that he mentioned was that of Norman St John Stevas – he told me that it was common knowledge that ‘he is holding spanking parties with little boys’ and that ‘no-one knows how he is getting away with it’. Well in north Wales and Brighton someone got away with murdering the witnesses.

So what of the people who knew what Morrison was up to but remained silent, which is why he at least got away with it. The President of the City of Chester Conservative Association, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster. A big mate of Prince Charles. A mentor to Prince William whilst William was growing up. Gerald Cavendish’s son is godfather to Prince George. Gerald’s wife is William’s godmother. Gerald died in August 2016 ‘suddenly’ when he was only 64. A statement was issued at the time saying curiously that there were no suspicious circumstances. It was later alleged that he’d had a heart attack. In 1998 Gerald Cavendish experienced severe depression which was attributed to the strain of running his business. He was the third richest man in the UK and owned swathes of Belgravia and Mayfair, as well as Scotland, so he can’t have been worried about money. In 2000 it was said that he had suffered a nervous breakdown.

Gerald Cavendish enjoyed field sports, was an enthusiastic member of the Territorial Army – he reached the rank of Major-General – and was involved with many charities. His charity work included benevolent work for services personnel and working with young offenders and drugs. Rather like Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, one of the Top Doctors who concealed the paedophile gang in north Wales! Gerald was a Committee Member of Nuffield Hospitals from 1995 until his death. There’s a Nuffield Hospital in Chester – Dafydd worked there! Gerald was a life Vice-President of the NSPCC from 1988 until his death. The NSPCC that said nothing about the child abuse in north Wales, the NSPCC which was ‘supported’ by Jimmy Savile, the NSPCC that worked with and then merged with Esther Rantzen’s Childline – which ignored calls from youngsters who were abused in care in north Wales. The NSPCC who – very inappropriately  – were involved in running the ‘helpline’ for adults who were giving evidence in the police investigation into the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal in the 1990s. The NSPCC helpline was managed and staffed by colleagues of the paedophiles. At least one of the people being ‘supported’ was found dead whilst they were being ‘supported’ by the helpline. Gerald was the President of Scope 1982-2005 and President of RNIB. He was Pro-Chancellor of Keele University 1986-93. Jane Tunstill, one of the members of Jillings’s team appointed to investigate child abuse in Clwyd in 1994, obtained a Chair at Keele University immediately upon finishing the investigation. The Jillings report maintained that there was widespread serious child abuse happening in Clwyd children’s homes but overtly stated that they would not speculate on whether a paedophile ring was in operation. Gerald was Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University 1992-2002 and Chancellor of the University of Chester 1995-2016. Then Gyles became Chancellor! Gerald was also a Committee Member for the Prince’s Trust and Patron for the Princes’s Trust for North West England from 2001. A number of other people named on this blog as concealing the paedophile gang in north Wales were members of the Prince’s Trust.

Gerald was the executor of Diana, Princess of Wales’s will.

Gerald was a very influential man. I suspect that if he had chosen not to back Morrison, Morrison would have been finished.

In 2007 Gerald Cavendish stepped down as Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Reserves and Cadets) after prostitutes working for the very expensive U.S. escort agency Emperor’s Club named him as one of their clients. The most high profile scalp in the scandal was that of New York Governor Eliot Spitz who also resigned as a result of it. Mr Spitz had spent so many thousands of dollars with the Emperor’s Club that he had resorted to some creative accounting in order to try to cover his tracks but was found out. Gerald Cavendish was so rich that he won’t have needed to do that.

Gyles’s book mentions two other loyal members of the City of Chester Conservative Association – Gwyn Gough, the Secretary and Jill Everett, the Deputy Chairman. So they ‘managed’ the time bomb that was Peter Morrison as well then.

Jeremy Hanley, Gyles’s mate who cracked jokes about Morrison knowing how to carry a handbag is Sir Jeremy Hanley, who was Conservative MP for Richmond and Barnes 1983-97. So he was Brandreth’s local MP then before Gyles ever got a sniff of standing for Chester. Hanley was Conservative Party Chairman 1994-95. He was for a brief time PPS to Chris Patten – who was Party Chairman whilst Brandreth was crawling his way into the Commons. After he left politics, Hanley went in for being a company director, including a Director of the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce.

What about Morrison’s membership of those ‘exclusive’ clubs which so impressed Gyles, White’s and Pratt’s? There are an awful lot of members of White’s who, like the Duke of Westminster, could have finished Morrison off if they’d chosen to publicise what seemed to be an open secret among people who knew Morrison. Members of White’s include Prince Charles (he held his stag party there before marrying Diana), Prince William, Norman Lamont and Geordie Greig. Greig is at present the Editor of the Mail On Sunday. He previously worked on The Sunday Times and has also been the Editorial Director of The Independent On Sunday and the Independent. Greig’s sister was a Lady in Waiting to Diana. David Cameron was a member of White’s until 2008 when he resigned because White’s refused to admit women. Cameron’s father Ian had been a member for donkeys years and was the former Chairman. So who let Morrison in then?

So that, based on Gyles’s own account, is how It Was The Sun Wot Won It. Assisted by a Tory Party who knew that they had a child molester in their midst but were buggered if those ugly, red-faced, appallingly overweight Labour activists were going to win the day – and of course helped by someone who was prepared to murder the witnesses. At least Gyles’s greedy social climbing vile empty headed wife Michele now has Serious Money. How does it feel then Michele? Was it worth the brutalisation, rape and murder of a considerable number of young people who were drawn from the social class that you despise? Or do you manage to put that out of your tiny brain when you and Gyles are talking Teddy Bear Museums with the Royals?

Before finishing this post I just clicked on BBC News Wales online and I see that an enormous row has broken out over a fairly innocuous tweet sent out by Leanne Wood. In response to the Barcelona attack, Leanne tweeted ‘Ofnadwy/terrible. Is this more far-right terrorism? My thoughts are with all those affected’. The world and his wife have gone apeshit, particularly the Welsh Conservatives and UKIP. Janet Finch-Saunders, Conservative AM for Aberconwy, has said that Leanne’s tweet was ‘morally depraved’. No Janet, that was Peter Morrison, all those who kept quiet about him and whoever it was who killed the witnesses. UKIP have tweeted to Leanne ‘how dare you associate us with murderers?’ Er – I hate to draw this to your attention UKIP, but one of your leading lights in Wales is a man called Neil Hamilton. Who knew a man called Peter Morrison very well indeed – and someone killed a number of people who’s testimony could have put Peter Morrison behind bars. As if on cue, dear old Hamilton himself has waded into the fray and is quoted on BBC News Wales as saying that ‘Leanne Wood is clearly not fit for purpose. She is an embarrassment not only to Plaid Cymru but to the whole of Wales’.

This is the Neil Hamilton who lost his seat in Cheshire in 1997 after getting himself in the most appalling mess after some events involving cash in envelopes. Conservative Central Office begged him not to stand because he was far more of an embarrassment than Leanne could ever be, but Neil stood anyway. He was opposed by BBC journalist Martin Bell who stood on an anti-sleaze ticket. Neil’s wife Christine – who Gyles found to be such a delight, just like Peter Morrison – harangued Martin Bell in public and memorably asked who would vote for a man who wore a white suit. As it turned out, thousands of people would and they did, because they were desperate to see the back of the Hamiltons. Years later Neil Hamilton sneaked into the Senedd – I suspect because most of the people who voted for him didn’t know what he’d done in Tatton in the 1980s and 90s and they certainly won’t have known what he did when he was in the Federation of Conservative Students. But even the political geeks who did know probably weren’t aware that he was mates with a man who was known among the voters of Chester to be molesting children. Come off it Neil and Christine, you’ll have heard what Morrison was up to – and anyway Gyles has now admitted it to the world in his autobiography.

When ‘Breaking the Code’ was published, Brandreth was on record as saying that the Whips take a very harsh view of anyone who leaks their practices, but he thinks that they’ll probably forgive him. But is the wider world going to forgive you for keeping quiet about a child molester when witnesses to the gang that he was part of were murdered Gyles?

Election Campaign Update – And A Reminder

MI’ve been exposed to a lot of election campaign news today – as Plaid and Labour have both released their election manifestos, the media has been full of interviews and commentary. One of my friends attended the launch of the Labour manifesto in England although I haven’t received the low down on it all from him yet. However I have heard snippets of commentary on the news and I understand that Jeremy has pledged many more billions for the NHS and pay rises for nurses, yet has not made the commitment to reversing the Tories benefit cuts that many people were hoping that he would. Jeremy – the NHS is being grossly mismanaged and even if you give them the billions as promised that will be pissed up against a wall as well and then the Top Doctors and Associated Vested Interests will simply return for yet more. Furthermore nurses are NOT badly paid – healthcare assistants, porters and cleaners in the NHS are, but nurses are not. Tim Farron trotted out the myth of ‘nurses going to food banks’ this morning too – well if they are, they are not doing so because they can’t afford food. During one general election campaign years ago Spitting Image took the piss out of Neil Kinnock by having his puppet campaigning by simply repeatedly yelling down a megaphone ‘nurses’ – I think that everybody except for the Tories seem to be doing the same at the moment. Neil Kinnock did not win that election. Indeed he didn’t win any election, so why the media keep wheeling him out as some sort of sage to tell us all how hopeless Jeremy is I cannot fathom. Anyway sadly it would seem that Jeremy et al are too busy pursuing the votes of the more comfortably off people who work in the NHS to defend people who are becoming destitute because Crapita and ATOS have removed their disability benefits following deeply flawed ‘assessments’ by people maintaining that they are ‘qualified healthcare professionals’ when they may actually be nurses (!) or physiotherapists who have been fired from previous positions and who have no knowledge of the conditions that they claim to be ‘assessing’. But then the Top Doctors et al make more noise and are able to gain more media coverage than someone severely mentally ill sleeping in a doorway.

One thing that I heard this morning was Leanne being interviewed on the ‘Today’ programme. Leanne was being given a grilling by – I think Sarah Montague – who was having a good sneer at Plaid’s performance as compared to the SNP and who was also highlighting what was alleged to be the very personal tone of a Plaid party political broadcast screened last night. I didn’t see it, but Montague was maintaining that words such as ‘cruel’ and ‘vicious’ had been used to describe the Tories. Leanne stood by the broadcast and reiterated her opposition to ‘cruel Tory policies’. I note that the Plaid manifesto also makes reference to the Tory party being ‘cruel and reckless’ and states that only Plaid can protect Wales against the Tories. I do not disagree that many of the Tories policies are cruel and reckless, but Leanne and some – although not all – of her colleagues would appear to have enforced some pretty cruel practices themselves. Such as tabling and signing an Early Day Motion to prevent the closure of a ‘hospital for mentally abnormal criminals’ that in reality was an establishment owned and managed by a man who qualified as a solicitor but who was struck off for embezzling clients funds and who owned a number of other schools and children’s homes where children made allegations of sexual and physical abuse. And it would seem that a number of the ‘mentally abnormal criminals’ housed in this ‘hospital’ had complained about being sexually assaulted whilst they were resident in children’s homes in north Wales. (Please see post ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’.) One of the people who signed that Early Day Motion was Ieuan Wyn Jones who is Plaid’s candidate for Ynys Mon. As for being reckless – well Leanne attempted to derail a criminal investigation into the paedophile ring that operated in children’s homes in north Wales, by appearing on TV and suggesting that witnesses should talk to her rather than the police on the grounds that she was a woman. (So was Lucille Hughes who was the Director of Gwynedd Social Services and named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that the paedophile ring was in operation in the children’s services but failing to do anything about it.) Now witnesses to the activities of that paedophile ring are quite thin on the ground because so many of them have been found dead. A number of them died all at once when a fire broke out in a building in Brighton after they’d been invited to a party there – a fire that was allegedly started by a Trevor Carrington, but no-one can be certain because he was found dead shortly after as well. Traces of an accelerant such as petrol were found at the scene. Not everybody at the party died, some jumped to safety although they were impaled on railings below. Cruel and reckless? Yes I’d say that inviting people to a party in a building with no fire escape and then throwing a petrol bomb into that building was pretty bloody cruel and reckless – as was trying to interfere with a criminal investigation into the people who had probably done that. As for protecting the Welsh nation from the Tories – one of my posts regarding the Mary Wynch case (‘A Few Of The Relevant Politicians Re Mary Wynch’) demonstrates very clearly that it was Tories at the highest levels of Thatcher’s and Major’s administrations that were ensuring that there was no investigation into what happened to Mary at the hands of the north Wales mental health services – and Plaid were keeping quiet about what was happening too. Regarding Dr Dafydd Alun Jones, he who was illegally imprisoning people and sexually exploiting patients – he was a former Plaid candidate. There are constant allegations that bigwigs were using the children’s homes in north Wales as brothels – a number of Tories have admitted that Sir Peter Morrison, MP for Chester and Thatcher’s PPS, as well as one time deputy Party Chairman, molested under-aged boys and there are witnesses who allege that he was known to have visited children’s homes in north Wales. The picture that emerges of the 80s and 90s is that of Tories at the top of the food chain calling the shots whilst Plaid effectively kept a lid on it all at the local level. No-one defended Wales from the Tories, they wrecked the nation. I note that Leanne popped up on Questions To The First Minister after lunch as well, berating Carwyn about the state of the mental health services at the Betsi. These are the mental health services that employ a nurse that is on such good terms with Leanne’s colleague the dreadful Hywel Williams that he held one of his election victory parties at her house – the same Hywel who literally turned his back and walked away from constituents who approached him about the malpractice of the mental health services or who wrote them rude e mails. (Do you remember the e mail that you sent to me Hywel? The one that simply read ‘You have your opinion, I have mine?’ Did you think that I didn’t know that you were a former psychiatric social worker, that you were on Dafydd Alun Jones’s twitter feed and that you were actively mates with some of the people who were abusing us?) Prior to appearing on the ‘Today’ programme, Leanne made a much publicised light-hearted appearance with Victoria Derbyshire, filmed in a car, during which I understand that Leanne discussed the symptoms of her menopause. Presumably she thought that she was on ‘Woman’s Hour’, where discussing one’s periods or menopause (depending upon one’s vintage) is obligatory before one moves on to damson jam and smashing the glass ceiling. (I used to wonder why ‘Woman’s Hour’ was so lame until I read about the shite that rained down upon Jenny Murray’s head for daring to take the Germaine Greer view that a man who has had his penis surgically removed isn’t actually a woman – it virtually got her the sack.) Leanne also stated that with regard to Theresa May, ‘I don’t know what she is’. Sadly Leanne, she’s a Prime Minister – she’s not a very good one, but at least she has stated her intentions to abolish the Mental Health Act which has been used to incarcerate people who have dared complain about the mental health services or who have been sexually assaulted in children’s homes and if they still won’t shut up load them up with so much ‘medication’ that it renders them incapable or even kills them.

Then Adam Price popped up on the ‘World At One’ – he spoke very well and didn’t bother to discuss the state of his hormones/reproductive organs once, he stuck principally to economics. God there must be so many people in Plaid who regret the thrashing of Leighton Andrews in that last Assembly election… Incidentally, there was a news item in the Daily Post yesterday which reported the imprisonment of a man who had attempted suicide. He had shot himself in the foot – I think he must have been taking lessons from Leanne…

Updates, Common Themes and News, May 5 2017

In my post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs’ I discussed the case of the Rev Emyr Owen from Tywyn who in 1985 was imprisoned for ‘defiling corpses’ without a scrap of evidence being produced. Lurid allegations were made that Emyr had severed penises from three corpses – no penises were produced or corpses sans penises, although this doesn’t seem to have troubled anyone. As detailed in the post, a few familiar names were central to what looks like the framing of an eccentric, possibly gay, man – the North Wales Police, Caernarfon Crown Court, Chester Crown Court and dear old Huw Daniel. Since I wrote the post I’ve thought about the case a little more and have noticed yet another claim that was made during the trial for which evidence was not and indeed could not be provided, yet no-one pointed this out at the time. As evidence of just how depraved Emyr was, not only was it claimed that he had severed the penises from three corpses, but it was also claimed that he had injected some of the penises with boiling water to cause them to become erect. None of this stands up (so to speak) – the penis become erect through a complex mechanism that involves it becoming engorged with blood. For this mechanism to work, the penis in question needs to be attached to a living body, in possession of a circulatory system which is having blood pumped around it by a heart. Simply injecting a severed penis with water would not achieve the same effect. Injecting it with boiling water would damage the tissues that would need to be intact for an erection to occur anyway, indeed injecting the penis with any water would irreparably damage the tissues because the cells would be destroyed by osmosis. Furthermore, a severed penis would of course consist of dead tissue and dead tissue would be also be far too damaged to sustain an erection. So how exactly did Chester Crown Court swallow this load of hogwash that anyone who’s ever taught biology to secondary school pupils would have seen straight through? Emyr was put on trial in 1984 – I ‘did’ osmosis in 1976 in a class of 14 year olds in Somerset and we certainly were not at the cutting edge of medical science, pushing back frontiers in a way that would have been unknown to Chester Crown Court. And who was the prosecuting barrister presenting this utter horseshit that even a 14 year old could have debunked? Step forward Huw Daniel, now a retired judge and former Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd! Did HM the Queen realise that he was either Very Dim Indeed or Completely Corrupt when he used to ingratiate himself to her on Royal visits to Wales?

There are clues in the newspaper reports of the time as to what really may have landed Emyr in trouble – it was reported that he shared his house with two gay men, one of whom was employed as clerk to a Court. Emyr himself was the chaplain to the High Sherriff in Caernarfon Crown Court – I speculated previously that in the light of allegations of rampant corruption in the police and legal circles in north Wales at the time that Emyr could well have known a few things about a few other people that those people wouldn’t want publicised and that this could have been the reason for his being framed. So one of Emyr’s housemates also might have known of corruption in the legal services…. During the summing up it at the trial it was reported that the judge said to Emyr that ‘your private homosexual practices became a private perversion’. Was the fact that Emyr was presumed to be gay what really bothered all these people as they dreamt up lurid scenarios of penises being removed from corpses and then forced into erections? Because someone did dream all this up, the allegations made against Emyr were a physiological impossibility. Regular readers will by now have realised that there was a great deal of confusion about sexuality in north Wales at that time, particularly homosexuality – the North Wales Hospital was infamous for treating gay men by ‘aversion therapy’ and seemed to have continued to do this long after it had become completely discredited and stopped elsewhere. Meanwhile, Dr Dafydd Alun Jones was literally banging his way around the female patients of the hospital and his mistress – along with a few other people – was facilitating a vicious paedophile ring whose prime target was boys. It is in the fetid atmosphere of such hot and steamy glasshouses that outrages such as the one committed against Emyr occur. It is all rather reminiscent of the book that Python published years ago consisting of the bits that they’d edited out of ‘The Life of Brian’ – there was one scene in which Brian is denouncing ‘those who join false sects’ but a member of the audience mishears and yells out ‘those who enjoy forced sex?’ and thousands of people come running to hear the rest of the sermon. Incidentally, I know someone who spent his youth on the Lyn Peninsula who was still very angry in 1984 that he had not yet seen ‘The Life of Brian’ – it had been banned in Pwhelli…

So what brought Emyr to the attention of DC Gwyn Roberts in the first place? Was Emyr caught cottaging in the public conveniences in Tywyn perhaps? No – it was reported that Emyr had made allegations to DC Gwyn Roberts that local Freemasons were up to no good. In 1985, Freemasonry was still a powerful force in north Wales. There was a Lodge in Bangor University, there was a Lodge in the town of Bangor which numbered policemen and solicitors among its members and there were of course similar Lodges across the whole of north Wales and the wider UK. Stephen Knight’s book ‘The Brotherhood’ which was published in 1984 maintains that at that time, nearly all judges were Freemasons. There have been constant allegations that the north Wales child abuse scandal involved Freemasonry, it is known that a number of key figures in the Waterhouse Tribunal were Freemasons and in 1987 I was told by the one honest employee that MIND had that the corruption and malpractice at the North Wales Hospital was tied up with Freemasonry. (By the way, if readers have time, do read the Stephen Knight book which Knight wrote after persuading various Freemasons throughout the UK to give him interviews. He has had to supply pseudonyms for everyone but in one of the chapters in the edition that I have got, Knight gives an account of the macabre sexual practices and corruption of a doctor whom he alleges was a truly malevolent influence within Freemasonry – the pseudonym that he uses for this man is ‘Dr Denbeigh’. King does not reveal what region of the UK that Dr Denbeigh resided in.)

There are other noticeable details in the news reports about Emyr. It was stated that Emyr was a small man who wore Cuban heels to increase his height – it was also mentioned that when ‘6 ft 4in’ DC Roberts ‘interviewed’ Emyr, Emyr soon ‘crumbled’… It was reported that Roberts was told by senior officers to make sure that he got the right man as this was such a high profile arrest. Well Roberts certainly made sure that he did that – he got a gay clergyman who had complained about Freemasonry and probably had knowledge of wrongdoing in legal circles. Possibly involving DC Roberts and Huw Daniel. I note that further bizarre allegations involving dead bodies and Black Masses were levelled at Emyr by Roberts in 1992 after Emyr’s release, although there is no record of a trial, prosecution or further conviction. Roberts stated that he continued to ‘investigate’ Emyr after Emyr served his sentence because he just knew that something wasn’t right. In 1992, arrests of suspected paedophiles employed in children’s homes in north Wales began happening and allegations of a paedophile ring with links to the police, to politicians and legal professionals had hit the London based media. I cannot understand why DC Roberts did not manage to find incontrovertible evidence that Emyr was cooking and eating babies in between busying himself kissing the Devil’s fundament…

Now for an appeal to readers. A number of readers have been very helpful recently, sending me info and links after reading certain posts. In my post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs’ I mentioned a man called Trevor Carrington, who allegedly confessed to starting the fire in 1992 (the same year that DC Roberts found more ‘evidence’ against the Rev Emyr!) in a flat in Brighton which resulted in the deaths of several people who were allegedly victims of the north Wales paedophile ring. Among the very many other worrying details concerning this fire (please see ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs’ for more on the story), was the fact that Trevor Carrington was found dead days after allegedly making this ‘confession’ and also was found to have received £20,000 into his bank account although he was unemployed. I can find very few details of who Trevor Carrington actually was, where he came from or how he knew the men then living in Brighton who had grown up in children’s homes in north Wales. But I do know that a lady called Gwenan Carrington was until a few years ago Director of Gwynedd Social Services. (After screwing up big-time in that role, Gwenan stood down and then stepped into a senior role with Anglesey County Council, where, as far as I know, she still is.) Like many of her colleagues, Gwenan had a liberal interpretation of child protection policies. After the continual embarrassment that has been ‘children’s services’ in Wales, a few years ago the Welsh Gov’t introduced a policy of each Social Services in Wales being obliged to provide the name of someone who would act in an ‘independent’ role to ‘safeguard’ children. The ‘independent’ person fulfilling this role for Gwynedd was none other than Gwenan Carrington, the Director of Social Services – I was actually shown a copy of the relevant document signed by Gwenan herself… I am wondering if Trevor Carrington was in any way connected to Gwenan Carrington – if he was, he will not have been a blood relative, Carrington is Gwenan’s married name. She began life as Gwenan Griffiths from Anglesey. Her brother is Aled Griffiths, who until recently lectured in law and social policy at Bangor University, her other brother is also a solicitor and her sister-in-law is Joanna Griffiths, former Director of Conwy Social Services! I understand that this cosy set-up has landed them the moniker of ‘the mafia’. If any readers have any info, please get in touch.

Previous blog posts have mentioned the names of many lawyers and judges who have been involved in what seem to be miscarriages of justice, attempts at producing miscarriages of justice or bizarre and inexplicable decisions resulting in the suffering of vulnerable people who have had the north Wales children’s services or mental health services experience. Posts have also mentioned political figures who seemed to have played a part in concealing the horrors that were happening in the children’s/mental health services. One running theme is the Chester and Wales Circuit. But something else stands out too – an awful lot of the people involved were law graduates of Aberystwyth University. Wales – particularly the north and mid-Wales – does have a lot of Aber graduates employed in the public services or in public life, because Aber and Bangor Universities were for many years the favourite destinations of many Welsh speaking students and when they graduated many of them were committed to remaining in Wales and making a contribution to the nation. But the law angle is particularly interesting – Aberystwyth would not have been the only option for aspiring lawyers from Wales, there were many other law schools to choose from and another one in Wales as well, at Cardiff. But again and again, the biographies of people whose names are cropping up on the blog mention that they studied law at Aber – and many of them then did a stint at Chester College of Law. It is too frequent to just be a reflection of the choices that students from Wales or who subsequently worked in Wales might have made. It is rather a very obvious indication of a network. For example: Elfyn Llwyd – Aberystwyth, Chester; Lord John Morris – Aberystwyth; Sir William Mars-Jones – Aberystwyth; Lord Gwilym Prys-Davies – Aberystwyth. Other people involved studied outside of Wales, but grew up in Wales (frequently north Wales), eg. Huw Daniel, Ieuan Wyn Jones, Sir Ronald Waterhouse, Simon Hughes, Justice Wyn Williams, Greville Janner, Theo Huckle, Sir Malcolm Pill. Some people both grew up in north Wales and read law at Aber, eg. Elfyn Llwyd, William Mars-Jones, Gwilym Prys-Davies.

Then there are a few straggling themes – as did Ieuan Wyn Jones and Paul Flynn (please see posts ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’ and ‘More On Those Who Signed That Early Day Motion’), William Mars-Jones stood for election for the constituency of Denbigh, but in a previous era. (It is obvious from his biography that it is highly likely that Mars-Jones would have personally known Gwynne Williams the lobotomist.) There are a few people named on the blog whose education I have not been able to research, because they have not yet reached, or did not ever reach, a sufficiently high profile for that information to be easily discovered. However the crooks working for Gwynedd County Council such as H. Ellis Hughes and Ron Evans will have been very strongly locally networked, as no doubt was the crooked lawyer who worked at the Welsh Office, Andrew Park.

A number of people have also suggested that I should pay a bit of attention to David Jones, the Conservative MP for Clwyd West and former secretary of State for Wales under Cameron. An initial search reveals that Jones also attended the Chester College of Law, as a young solicitor worked with Ieuan Wyn Jones in a practice at Ruthin and also previously worked in the same Bangor practice as an Elwyn Jones – however my co-researcher has now clarified that this Elwyn Jones was actually the son of yet another Elwyn Jones, ie. Sir Elwyn Jones who was for a brief time Labour MP for Conway.

Now for election news! The results of the council elections are now known in full – the Tories are crowing, although they didn’t achieve what they’d hoped in Wales and the Labour Party in Wales have today stressed that they are Welsh Labour, a completely different brand to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour and that they are led by Carwyn not Jeremy. I have been asked if I think that Jeremy knew about the barrel of shit that was the children’s services in Islington (please see post ‘The London Connection’). Jeremy of course sprang from the loins of the Labour Party in Islington himself and still represents a constituency there – but I suspect that unlike the Margarets and the Tessas, Jeremy would not have ignored/denied the presence of a paedophile ring infiltrating children’s services, but I do think that Jeremy probably is so trusting and so ready to see the good in people rather than the bad that he really might have been about the only person who didn’t realise what was going on. I have a friend who lived in Islington and was a community worker there in the late 70s/early 80s and he told me that Jeremy was a really nice helpful bloke – Margaret Hodge however was a very different kettle of fish…. So I’m not sure that it is Jeremy that is the problem with London Labour – but in view of what I published on this blog in my post ‘The London Connection’ I think it’s entirely logical that Carwyn would want to put as much distance as possible between himself and them. Carwyn needs to wake up to just how bad the NHS in north Wales is and take effective action, but I have not yet obtained evidence/information that he has been concealing a murderous paedophile gang – although his Counsel General Theo Huckle certainly ignored an awful lot of evidence of criminal activity that he shouldn’t have. Time to mount an investigation perhaps Carwyn?

In my post discussing the sad death of Matthew Jones (‘Another Death – May 4 2017’) I predicted that now it’s election time, no local politician will breathe a word about this latest Betsi disaster. They haven’t disappointed me – none of them have mentioned it and dear old Hywel Williams (Plaid) has, again as predicted, written yet another piece for a local newspaper on what a brilliant idea it would be to have a medical school in Bangor – staffed and managed by the people whose callousness and stupidity led to Matthew’s death! Nice one Hywel, as ever you’re a real people’s champ. FOOL. Another vile politician who also has a shameful record on a lethal NHS has come to my attention today – Andy Burnham, who has just been elected the City Mayor of Manchester. Andy did of course conceal the Mid-Staffs scandal for a very long time although he was told repeatedly that terrible things were happening there and that the death rates were a statistical outlier. So while patients drank water out of vases, were assessed and triaged by unqualified receptionists, were sworn at and abused by staff, were left lying in their own faeces and urine because the nurses couldn’t be arsed to walk across a ward with a bedpan, were left with broken bones because the staff couldn’t interpret an X ray, while thousands of them died and while the woman who blew the whistle on it all received death threats and had to leave the area, that down to earth man of the people ‘I’m from the north me’ Andy supped with the London elite because he had his eye on becoming leader of the Labour Party or even PM! (I did enjoy his ‘I just can’t believe that this is happening to me’ facial expression when Jeremy was declared winner of the leadership election.) Part of Andy’s remit as Mayor of Manchester will be health and social care. Stand by for death rates to rocket in Manchester…

The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs

It was reported a few days ago that the Director of the film ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ has died. I’ve never seen the whole film, only short clips from it, but I think that the story features a gruesome psychiatrist who is also a cannibal. When this film was the subject of much commentary after it’s release, I was a patient at the Hergest Unit, seeing Dr X. Dr X was the psychiatrist who unbeknown to me was doing some terrible things behind the scenes, both to me and other patients – interestingly enough Dr X really loved ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and used to wax lyrical about the mad psychiatrist character. However at least Hannibal Lecter or whatever he was called was fictional – Dr X, his colleagues and their victims were all very real.

I have detailed in previous posts how Dr X advised psychiatrists from London to consult one Lucille Hughes for evidence of my ‘dangerousness’, Lucille Hughes being the Director of Gwynedd Social Services who was named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating in the social services but failing to act (I have never met Lucille Hughes, which makes Dr X’s advice to Nigel Eastman and Robin Jacobson even more sinister.) My posts ‘More On Those Prisons For Folk Who Dared Complain’ and ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’ describes how a facility in Dolgellau for ‘mentally abnormal offenders’, Garth Angharad – which was owned and managed by a man who also owned residential schools and children’s homes where sexual abuse and cruelty were alleged to have been happening – was used to house some of the people who had complained about being sexually abused in children’s homes in north Wales and how an attempt to close this place down in 1992 was met with an Early Day Motion signed by Elfyn Llwyd and nine other MPs, demanding that this valuable facility remain open. I mentioned that this Early Day Motion was tabled in May 1992, just one month after a dreadful fire in a building in Brighton took place, which killed a number of former residents of north Wales children’s homes and their associates. Now for a bit more on that fire.

In April 1992 a small party was being held in a flat in a building in Brighton. Two men at the party had both been residents of Bryn Alyn, a notorious children’s home in north Wales, one of a complex of children’s homes owned by the notorious John Allen, who was later imprisoned for sexually abusing children in care in north Wales. Some reports allege that John Allen had arranged to meet the party goers at the flat but didn’t turn up. The party goers were well-known among Brighton’s gay community and there were allegations that they were involved in under-age sex/porn/drugs and had knowledge of liaisons with politicians. There seems to have been a great deal of confusion regarding who owned the building in which the fire took place. The flat had no fire escape, despite the local council wanting to contact the owner to recommend that one was installed. It transpired that the freehold of the building was owned by a company registered in the British Virgin Islands and because of it’s offshore status no-one was able to find out the names of the company directors. There were rumours that the notorious property developer Nicholas Hoogstraten leased the building but at the inquest into the five deaths, the East Sussex coroner, Dr Donald Gooding, refused to call Hoogstraten as a witness. (The families of some of the dead walked out of the inquest as a result and later applied for a judicial review of the inquest. At that hearing, Justice Latham ruled that there was a case for a judicial review on the basis that Gooding had acted ‘unreasonably and unlawfully’ in refusing to call Hoogstraten.) Although the inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing, there was much confusion about many things. A man called Trevor Carrington had allegedly confessed to starting the fire as a ‘prank’. It was alleged that in his confession he stated that he had set fire to a settee in the entrance hall. Yet fire investigators maintained that the fire had not started in the entrance hall – they stated that the fire had started in three different places at once and that more than one person would have been involved. They also suspected that an accelerant such as petrol was used. Just to add to the confusion, although the Home Office acknowledged the fire investigators findings, they refused to review the case. No-one could return to ask Trevor Carrington for more details because two days after his alleged confession he was found dead, after falling into the path of a lorry on a quiet rural road. The dear old police announced that his death was not suspicious and that he had killed himself by throwing himself under the lorry. Trevor Carrington was unemployed yet had taken receipt of 20 thousand pounds into his bank account shortly before he died. He had told a third party that he banked on the Isle of Man and needed to go there to withdraw some cash. Trevor Carrington’s alleged confession was only made to one other person whose reliability was called into question and there is no other record of it. A few days before the fire, a couple who lived in the top floor flat of the building were stopped by a stranger in the street and advised to get out of the flat. In 2002, Hoogstraten was convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned after he paid two thugs to kill a business rival. Once this was made public, some of the relatives of those who died in the fire called for a fresh probe into the fire. That does not seem to have happened. Hoogstraten did not spend that long in prison either – he was released and then left the UK to live in Zimbabwe. He was alleged to be a good mate of the delightful Robert Mugabe. Before Hoogstraten left the UK he was investigated for tax evasion – the planned trial was dropped when information was received that the judge was going to be assassinated if it went ahead.

Some of the relatives of the deceased and some who hadn’t actually died in the fire still insisted on making a nuisance of themselves and continued to cry ‘foul play’. One young man was particularly vocal and maintained that some of the former kids who had been resident in north Wales children’s homes had been murdered. This young man gave evidence against John Allen at Allen’s trial in 1995. Shortly after he gave evidence and days before he was due to receive a substantial sum from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board he was found dead. Another suicide – of course, what else…

It was reported that the ‘gay community’ of Brighton refused to come forward and give information to the police about the fire because of their ‘gay lifestyle’. In a town famous for it’s hospitality towards gay people. Obviously nothing to do with their fear of being found dead after having committed suicide. There were attempts to prod the High Court into reinvestigating the fire but the High Court refused. Probably because of it was ashamed of it’s lifestyle.

This blog has commented previously on the propensity of buildings with connections to the mental health services and children’s services in north Wales to go up in flames – indeed it nearly happened to my own house (please see previous blog posts). Some years after the fire in Brighton, there was another interesting fire, this time in a warehouse in north Wales. The warehouse in question housed the records of the children who had passed through the hands of Bryn Estyn, one of the children’s homes in north Wales where serious sexual and physical abuse of residents had occurred. The fire occurred during the Waterhouse Tribunal – the records were completely destroyed and as a result the Waterhouse Tribunal was unable to trace many of the former residents of Bryn Estyn and request them to give evidence. That fire was declared by the police to be not in the least bit suspicious either.

Fires don’t always destroy buildings and records however. When I lived near Bethesda in the 90s I vaguely knew a young family who lived nearby – they were distinctive because they were two young parents with a very big family, much bigger than is the norm, there were about six or seven children, all quite close together in age. My friend knew the mother of the family and I was told that she took her Catholicism seriously and refused to use contraception. This was eliciting a lot of grief from the local welfare professionals – the mother was alleged to have had a good education but later suffered with mental health problems, as did the father. There was constant disapproval regarding the number of children that these two young people had. The family were certainly short of money and lived in a small very chaotic house but I never witnessed the parents being anything other than very caring towards their children. Years after I left Bethesda, I met the father of this family in my friends café in Llanberis. He had developed a psychotic illness and was living rough in barns and outbuildings around Gwynedd. He remembered me and began a conversation – he had just been kicked out of the Hergest Unit (on what grounds I didn’t know), was clearly quite unwell but chatted away enthusiastically about his children who were now all teenagers and to whom he had remained very close. I last saw him in about 2007 – he had turned up at Bangor University very disorientated and was trying to gatecrash the graduation ceremony, but not in an aggressive way, he just wanted to join in the party. Some time later a former neighbour from Bethesda told me that this man had died. He had gone on a trip to Ireland where for some inexplicable reason someone had set him on fire. He died from his burns. I am not aware that anyone was ever prosecuted for this.

Someone else from the Bangor area was found dead in Ireland as well, some years before the father of the big family in Bethesda, although I’m not sure that this man could fairly be categorised as a lamb. This was Geoffrey Leigh, a rather unscrupulous businessman who ran a property management company called Access Accommodation in Bangor, back in the early 90s. Leigh became notorious for swindling both landlords and tenants and had more than a few enemies. Leigh was then found murdered in Ireland. It was reported on the news that he had emigrated to Ireland days before to ‘start a new life’. Everyone presumed that someone whom he had conned had exacted revenge – but it then became known that Leigh had been murdered by his gay lover, a much younger man whom at one point had been his employee. Things got even more cloudy when it transpired that the gay lover who had murdered Leigh did not go to prison, he was instead put on probation. There was no explanation given in the media for this very light sentence but a few years ago I was told by someone who had worked in the probation service in north Wales that it was considered to be a case of domestic abuse in a same sex relationship – I was told that Leigh had been extremely abusive to his partner and this was taken to be a mitigating circumstance. None of this ever appeared in the local press in north Wales. What did appear was an enormous feature on Geoff Leigh, paying tribute to his work as a DJ for Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd – he used to present their Sunday morning Christian show no less.

Geoff Leigh was not the only man in north Wales who wore his Christianity on his sleeve who came to grief amid allegations of same sex activity. There was the case of the ‘brutal slaying’ of the ‘friendly’ Llanberis vicar, Canon Alun Jones in 1982. Two teenage boys were put on trial for his murder in 1983, at Chester Crown Court (where else – please see previous posts for interesting happenings at Chester Crown Court). The boys maintained that they had not intended to kill Alun Jones, although they had gone to his house to rob him and steal his car in order to run away. One of the boys was sent to borstal, but the other boy, 15 year old Richard Dennick, was given a life sentence and is now residing at Ty Llewellyn, the medium secure psychiatric unit run by the north Wales mental health services. Interestingly enough the boy who ended up receiving a life sentence and then was transferred into the mental health system maintained that he attacked the vicar because the vicar had tried to sexually assault him. There was a panic in 2015 because Richard Dennick managed to escape from Ty Llewellyn – within minutes the police put out warnings about an escaped murderer and the local schools were all closed lest any of the children encountered the escaped madman. It was stated that Richard Dennick was ‘unpredictable’ ‘without his medication’. I can find no record of Richard Dennick attempting to attack children. Richard Dennick’s story has always been that he did not mean to kill Canon Jones and that he only ever attacked Jones because he panicked when he thought that Alun Jones was going to sexually assault him. But whoever could know the truth in this case – after all, Chester Crown Court, the north Wales mental health services and allegations of sexual assault are involved. The press at the time described Alun Jones as allowing local boys to visit the vicarage to ‘play snooker’. Somebody else who grew up near Llanberis and remembers the case described Canon Jones to me as a ‘paedophile’. The judge at Chester who sentenced the 15 year old boy to life imprisonment described the boy as ‘evil’ – he was a Judge William Mars-Jones, later Sir William Mars-Jones. Mars-Jones grew up in Denbighshire, attended Denbigh High School and was of the same vintage as the lobotomist who presided over the North Wales Hospital Denbigh for so many years, Dr T. Gwynne Williams. In his obituaries, Mars-Jones was described as the ‘leader’ of the Chester and North Wales Circuit. Like so many people who have starred on this blog, as well as sitting on the Chester and Wales Circuit, Mars-Jones read law at Aberystwyth University.

It was when Richard Dennick escaped from Ty Llewellyn in 2015 that I became well-acquainted with the case of the murder of the Llanberis vicar and read the old press reports. I realised then that I had confused the case with another case from Gwynedd, the case of the Rev Emyr Owen from Tywyn in 1985, who was sentenced to four years in prison at Chester Crown Court for mutilating corpses. The case caused the most enormous fuss and it was reported that the Rev Owen had severed penises from three corpses, feeding one penis to the seagulls, burning another one and throwing another into the sea. The Rev Owen was said to have explained his actions by claiming that two Emyrs existed and it was ‘Emyr ddwrg’ (bad Emyr) who had defiled the corpses. Much was made in newspaper reports of Emyr Owen’s penchant for Cuban heels, his ‘bachelor lifestyle’ and the fact that he drove a car displaying pictures of fire-breathing serpents. But like so many criminal trials at Chester involving defendants from north Wales, there are indications that all might not have been as it was reported. The policeman who proudly boasted of catching Emyr Owen, DC Gwyn Roberts, has recently written his memoirs (as policemen from the North Wales Force are prone to doing – a number of them have published books along the lines of ‘murderers and perverts that I have known’). It transpires that Emyr Owen’s habits with corpses only came to light when DC Roberts caught Emyr writing hate mail. Emyr denied writing the hate mail – the hate mail had been sent to the police at Tywyn and to the Chief Constable David Owen – and no-one had any idea who was writing it, until DC Roberts ‘proved’ that it was Emyr after examining ‘6000 samples of handwriting’. That is an awful lot of samples to examine with the naked eye, remember, contrast and compare and later identify as being the handwriting of Emyr. It was alleged that the handwriting was ‘old fashioned’ and that there was a ‘distinctive’ letter T involved. Now someone of Emyr’s generation would have been taught handwriting at school, in a very prescriptive way, which may well have persisted with him into later adulthood. It may have been the case that every child taught handwriting by the teacher who taught Emyr was taught to write a distinctive T. DC Gwyn Roberts did not entertain this idea – because he knew that Emyr Did It. Furthermore once he proved that Emyr had written the hate mail, he then discovered that Emyr had removed the penises from three corpses. No penises were ever found – so how DC Roberts knew that one had been fed to sea gulls, one burnt and another thrown into the sea I do not know. There is also no mention of any corpses without penises being discovered. And guess what – DC Roberts explained that relatives of the defiled corpses were never informed, there was no need to cause upset. So it sounds to me as though there wasn’t any evidence at all produced. Emyr denied defiling corpses until after he was sentenced. Before this however, DC Gwyn Roberts had discovered a whole treasure trove at Emyr’s house – sticky tape, pliers, pornography, negatives of penises arranged on a plate and God knows what else. It was speculated that Emyr could have held Black Masses with all this gear. No-one had ever witnessed him actually doing this, but he could have… Emyr has gone down in the local history of north Wales as ‘Emyr ddwrg’ – but I notice that Emyr only ‘confessed’ to being two people, one of which was Emyr ddwrg, after he was sentenced. Interestingly enough, before being stitched up, or should I say ‘caught defiling corpses’, Emyr Owen had been the High Sheriff’s chaplain, sitting alongside the judge at Caernarfon Crown Court. So if all the allegations of rampant corruption in the North Wales Police and in the Chester and North Wales Circuit at that time were true – including allegations of the police planting incriminating material and compiling false confessions – Emyr may well have known a few things that could have landed a few people in a lot of trouble. And what if the ‘bachelor’ Minister took his religion seriously – which he might have, driving around in a car decorated with fire-breathing serpents, he may have been very zealous – there’s a danger that he might not have been easily persuaded to keep quiet about perjury and corruption. The thing that leaves me most uneasy about this whole case though is the identity of one of the prime movers and shakers, the prosecuting counsel – it was one Huw Daniel. For details of the dreadful Huw Daniel’s activities when he was elevated to Judge Huw Daniel and the account of the forging of a certificate of indictment relating to a case over which he presided, please see my posts ‘Interesting Happenings In The Legal System’, ‘Discussions On The Minibus – And A Revealing Letter’ and ‘Behind The Scenes Regarding Those Legal Happenings’. Ooh, one further thing about Emyr Owen’s trial – it was held so close to Christmas that the court officials didn’t think that there’d be any press coverage. DC Roberts remembers that they all had quite a shock when they realised that the world’s press had got hold of the story. I bet they did – no doubt the plan was for Emyr to be banged up without a word being printed about any of it. The only surprise is that Emyr wasn’t declared a ‘schizophrenic’ and handed over to the lobotomist and Dr Dafydd Alun Jones (although there might have been an attempt at that, remember the clichéd allegations about the two Emyr’s, one good, one bad?) – but a psychiatrist, a Dr William Lawson, testified that Emyr was not psychiatrically ill. If any readers know what prevented Emyr Owen from disappearing into the North Wales Hospital to be drugged into oblivion or sent ‘downstairs’, or indeed being found dead after ‘committing suicide’, please do let me know…

So presumably we can add the names of Richard Dennick and the Rev Emyr Owen as well as the names of Howard Hughes (please see post ‘More On Those Prisons For Folk Who Dared Complain’) and Matthew Hardman (see post ‘Family Annihilation’) to the long list of Welsh lambs that have been well and truly silenced via possible miscarriages of justice.

As Emyr Owen discovered, being a professional person of some standing in the community does not protect one from becoming a Welsh lamb. I have always been interested in what might have precipitated the fall from grace of another two people who were employed in the domain of law and order in north Wales. I have mentioned Sergeant Morgan of Bangor Police Station in my early post ‘Hippocratic Oath Or Hypocritic Oaf?’. On the night on which I was transported to the North Wales Hospital Denbigh and illegally imprisoned there, I heard Sgt Morgan, the custody Sgt on duty at Bangor Police Station, reaching a state of utter panic as he explained to the disgusting Dr K. Shah that I was being detained illegally. Sgt Morgan was ignored. I encountered Sgt Morgan a few months later when the north Wales mental health services were mass producing untruthful statements about me in a vain attempt to have me detained in Risley Remand Centre. I witnessed Sgt Morgan refuse to take a statement from one Janice Davies, a nurse at the North Wales Hospital, because he knew that it was a pack of lies – he was honest enough to tell me that ‘they’re all conspiring against you’. He also refused to allow Dr D.G.E. Wood into the cells to ‘visit’ me and prevented Dr X from sending ‘someone’ down to the police station to section me. In retrospect I suspect that it was only thanks to Sgt Morgan that I did not end up in Risley facing very serious charges. After I finally got home, I did of course make further complaints about the mental health services (they were never investigated). But I fear that I may have caused Sgt Morgan a great deal of difficulty. I had a row with Alun Davies, the manager of the mental health services at Ysbyty Gwynedd, on the phone – and I mentioned that even a policeman in Bangor Police Station had noted that the mental health services were conspiring against me. Davies bellowed down the phone that he’d ‘be making a complaint about that policeman’. Not long after, Sgt Morgan appeared in Court charged with indecently assaulting a teenage girl who had been in custody. The girl had been charged with theft and Sgt Morgan had put his hand in the back pocket of her jeans to ‘search’ her. It was enough to have him prosecuted, convicted and sacked. Now he may well have done what the teenager alleged. But that was nothing compared to what the rest of them were doing…. Now I know just how corrupt Davies et al were, I cannot help suspecting that Sgt Morgan was sacrificed. Time to hear Sgt Morgan’s story I think. Another person who was hung out to dry some ten years ago was John Grant Jones. John Grant Jones was the clerk to the Magistrates at Bangor. I remember him very well because he was there every time that the north Wales mental health services mounted prosecutions against me for ludicrous reasons. John Grant Jones was unfailingly friendly, polite, respectful and always explained procedures to me. So imagine my surprise when, many years later, John Grant Jones hit the headlines of the local press in a very big way. By that time he had reached a senior position in the Association of Justices Chief Executives, but he had been sacked amidst allegations of financial corruption. He stood accused of having fiddled extra money for his pension as well as an honorarium. In what must be a first for north Wales he was stripped of his OBE. John Grant Jones put up a fight and launched a case for unfair dismissal and I think disability discrimination. It was reported in the press that he had become very ill with the stress of what had happened to him and that his illness had then been used as a reason to put the boot in further. John Grant Jones eventually dropped his legal case and no longer works for the Court service in north Wales. I have no idea whether John Grant Jones was fiddling, but as with Sgt Morgan, even if John Grant Jones had been guilty of what he was accused, that was cat’s piss compared to what else was going on. As for taking away his OBE – just look at who in north Wales are hanging onto gongs: Keith Thomson, David Prichard, Peter Higson, D.G.E. Wood, Huw Daniel, Elfed Roberts – it’s a roll call of corrupt professional people who have been involved in the most serious wrongdoing. Time for John Grant Jones to tell us all why he was stuffed over by this bunch of crooks…

Like Sgt Morgan, there is yet another person whom I suspect may have been driven out of their job because they dared express the opinion that some of what was happening in the mental health services was shocking. For a while in the 90s I used to have a very nice GP in Bangor – she was very popular in the area and very well-respected. When I discussed Dr Dafydd Alun Jones with her she was honest enough to describe him as a ‘crook’ and a ‘wicked sick man’ – which is Dafydd in a nutshell really. She disappeared from Bangor some months later and no-one seemed to know why. Whilst browsing through the documents that were returned from my lawyers a few weeks ago I came across a copy of a letter that I’d written to Alun Davies after he had assured me that there were no problems with Dafydd at all. I had quoted this GP – I didn’t mention her by name, but what’s the betting that Davies et al did a bit of research to find out which GP could have made these comments? No wonder doctors won’t come and work in north Wales.

Before I finish this post, I’ll remember just three more lambs who were silenced. One was a man called Philip who had bipolar disorder, whom I first met in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. I have mentioned previously on the blog that just about everybody who I knew from those days is now dead – as far as I know, Philip was the last to die. I met up with Philip again when I was a patient at the Hergest Unit in about 2002, shortly before the dreadful Dr Tony Roberts did his best to ensure that I died. Like so many patients, Philip did not like either Tony Roberts or Dr David Healy. Whilst I was with him in the Hergest Unit Philip was quite manic and busied himself ruthlessly mocking Healy and Roberts, at one point writing a message up on a blackboard to remind the hospital of one of Healy’s less reputable activities. Some months after being discharged Philip died. ‘A problem with his medication’ I understand… I was told by a third party that it had been a case of sheer gross negligence. Another person whom I knew at the Hergest Unit with bipolar disorder has also fared very badly, although I don’t know if she is actually dead now. This was someone whose illness was very unstable at the best of times, but worsened if she was exposed to distress. At one point her behaviour became really intolerable and she was constantly unpleasant and offensive to everyone. I was told by one of the better nurses that this patient was particularly distressed because her sister had just begun nurse training at the Hergest Unit – the patient herself had been a student nurse before she became so ill that she had to withdraw. So no-one at the Hergest Unit knows the meaning of the expression ‘rubbing salt into the wound’ then. Never mind issues of confidentiality. I last saw this person in Bangor about five years ago. She was living rough and had been destitute for many months. She had spent the last few weeks hitch-hiking around the country and had earlier that morning hitched a lift from Manchester to Bangor with an unknown lorry driver. A lone, vulnerable woman with a severe mental illness who had spent the last twenty years in the embrace of the north Wales mental health services – duty of care anyone? The last lamb to be mentioned here was someone who was in the bed next to me in Seiriol Ward in Ysbyty Gwynedd in 1991. I thought of her as being an old lady, although she was probably about the same age that I am now, mid 50s. The reason that I thought of her as being an old lady was that she acted like one – she spent all day in bed and repeatedly stated her desire to be moved into an old people’s home so that she could die. She was a patient of Dr X and there was no privacy afforded to her at all, ward rounds were conducted by Dr X who would arrive at her bedside, in a dorm shared by loads of other patients, and ask her why she was ‘like this’. She would repeat that she wanted a place in an old folk’s home so that she could die. She had a husband who was clearly going out of his mind with worry who would diligently visit her every evening and a daughter who was probably in her early twenties who was very withdrawn and shy. A series of extraordinary decisions were made. Dr X announced that this lady was behaving like this because life in Seiriol Ward was ‘too comfortable’, so they were going to discharge her. The nurses were then told to prepare this lady’s shy daughter for her mother’s death – literally. And they did. They began to have conversations with her explaining that her mother ‘would not be here for ever’ and how they were going to help her live independently. The lady whose only desire to die was discharged. I understand that she died. What the bloody hell was Seiriol Ward, north Wales’s answer to Dignitas???
