The Compassion Centre

Readers will probably know that among the numerous other beneficial effects of Mindfulness claimed by its inventor, Dafydd’s former colleague Professor Mark Williams, is that it Increases Compassion. That is why the mental health workers who regularly practised Mindfulness, went on Mindfulness retreats and attended/spoke at conferences on Mindfulness facilitated a criminal trafficking gang, oversaw some of the highest rates of suicide in the UK, stood by while their clients became destitute, threatened their clients and perjured themselves in order to secure criminal convictions against their clients.

In recent years, Mark Williams et al have set out to demonstrate that Mindfulness Increases Compassion by the use of brain scans. I’m delighted to report that the research is going well and people have assured me that you can see the Compassion Centre of the brain ‘lighting up’ in those who practice Mindfulness.

The frontal lobe contains most of the dopamine-delicate neurons in the cerebral cortex. The dopamine system is associated with reward, attention, short-term memory tasks, planning, motivation and, in psychiatrists in north Wales and employees of Gwynedd and Clwyd Social Services, it contains the neurons responsible for people trafficking. Being the Vice Centre of the brain, the frontal lobe is commonly coloured red in textbooks:

Many readers will know that Mark Williams’s research fraud was so successful that he duped numerous politicians who had no knowledge of biomedical sciences at all and thus could be fed any old crap into robustly promoting Mindfulness on the grounds that it has the potential to transform society. Mindfulness was invented by Mark Williams while he lived and worked in Gwynedd, which had one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, one of the lowest mean annual average incomes, one of the poorest performing health services and a Social Services which abused and neglected the people whom it was paid to care for. Williams invented Mindfulness in the late 1980s. Gwynedd still has a high suicide rate, a very low mean average annual income and a non-functioning NHS and Social Services, so clearly it is a testament to the transformative powers of Mindfulness.

Chris Ruane, the Labour MP for the Vale of Clwyd, 1997-2015 and from 2017-present, really loves Mindfulness, he wants everyone to have a bit of it and led the Parliamentary Mindfulness charge. Chris’s constituency covers the areas of Denbigh and St Asaph/Bodelwyddan. The Denbigh area is still choc full with people who worked at Dafydd’s Denbigh Dungeon and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, a truly lethal hospital managed and staffed by associates of Dafydd et al, is located at Bodelwyddan. St Asaph Cathedral had a member of staff who molested kids for years and one of the organists at St Asaph Cathedral was the son of Geoff, the landlord of the Douglas Arms Hotel in Bethesda. Geoff was a Tory and a believer in law n order. Which will be why some of the police officers in north Wales boasted that they beat up local lads and threw them in Llyn Ogwen and when the victims of these violent assaults appeared in court charged with whatever they had been fitted up for, ‘we’d always be OK if Geoff was on the bench’. Some local men were found dead in Llyn Ogwen having ‘drowned while swimming when drunk’. See previous posts.

Chris Ruane doesn’t have any excuses for supporting Williams’s con, Ruane knows north Wales very well and has spent his entire life on the turf of Dafydd’s gang. Ruane attended Ysgol Mair Roman Catholic primary school in Rhyl. He then went to the Blessed Edward Jones RC High School (he was three years above Carol Vorderman). Blessed Ted’s ended up in very, very serious difficulties which culminated in the removal of the Headmaster in approx 2001 amidst a huge scandal; the school became a no-go area for teachers and pupils, people were fleeing while screaming loudly. Ruane graduated from Aberystwyth University in 1979, when that institution was staffed and managed by the paedophiles’ friends. Ruane then obtained an PGCE from Liverpool University in 1980. He was a town Councillor from 1988 and the Chairman of West Clwyd NUT region. Chris Ruane was a primary school teacher from 1982–97 and a Deputy Head from 1991–97.

Chris was elected as a Labour MP five months after the Waterhouse Inquiry opened.

Here’s Chris, he knows nuzzing…

Official portrait of Chris Ruane crop 2.jpg

Chris Ruane contested Clwyd North West in 1992, but was unsuccessful. So Chris was selected as a candidate when the Windbag was Leader of the Labour Party. The Windbag who knew Dafydd’s pal Dr Tony Francis, who was a great promoter of Mindfulness himself.

I am wondering if the effect of Mindfulness on the nation’s politicians is now beginning to manifest itself at last, because The Guardian Online is reporting that Lord Alf Dubs is to launch a cross-party ‘Compassion in Politics’ campaign. Lord Alf’s image is that of a kindly old buffer who has Special Insight into matters humanity because of his well-known status as a child from what was then Czechoslovakia who fled the Nazis. Alf was one of the mainly Jewish children saved by the English stockbroker Nicholas Winton and others on the Kindertransport (Dubs’s father was Jewish). Alf’s father had fled to England the day that the Nazis arrived in Czechoslovakia and young Alf was to meet him at Liverpool Street station. Alf later said that he clearly remembered leaving Prague station at age six and not touching the food pack given to him by his mother for the next two days. His mother was initially denied a visa but was able to join him and his father in London shortly afterwards.

Lord Alf’s True Story is now so well-known that I had forgotten how it first reached the ears of the world and indeed the ears of Alf himself. I refreshed my memory recently. Alf’s True Story was revealed by Esther Rantzen in Feb 1988 in an episode of ‘That’s Life’.

It was in late 1987 or very early in 1988 when I wrote to Esther Rantzen about Dafydd et al and provided her with details of the horrors of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh. Esther didn’t ring the gas board and neither did the young men with curly hair on her show. She didn’t even read out my letter and make any jokes about deformed root vegetables. Neither did Cyril compose an Odd Ode about Dafydd. Esther did not reply. Why did I write to Esther? Because she had launched a mental health campaign on ‘That’s Life’ and I thought that Esther ought to know what the mental health services in north Wales were actually doing to people.

After Esther launched her mental health campaign, David Scarboro, an actor in East Enders, killed himself in April 1988 and Esther put on her serious face for the TV cameras and maxed out on David’s death. David Scarboro had been treated very badly indeed by a section of the press with which Esther usually had a very chummy relationship. David played the part of ‘Mark Fowler’ and became upset when in 1985, the East Enders storyline dictated that ‘Mark Fowler’ should become a racist. Things came to a head when the script called for a scene in which ‘Mark’ was to deliver racist abuse. Scarboro refused to play the scene. After this it was decided that he should leave the show. His character was abruptly written out of the storyline.

In December 1985, Scarboro briefly returned to the series and subsequently for brief stints in 1986 and 1987, but never on a permanent or on-going basis. Scarboro’s last appearance in the series was in the episode aired on Christmas Day, 1987.

Elements of the UK tabloid press reported that Scarboro had been fired from the show for turning up late for filming and being unco-operative on set. Away from the series Scarboro initiated libel proceedings after several national papers published inaccurate stories about his private life, but the press continued to pursue him and his family. The ‘News of the Screws’ discovered that Scarboro was in a psychiatric unit, besieged it and published photographs of the unit. Scarboro subsequently left the unit because the unit could not protect his privacy and he could no longer get adequate treatment. Inaccurate stories about his condition were published, along with some very, very nasty headlines about the psycho David. David was known to have been distraught at the press coverage and at his inability to receive adequate care.

David died on 27 April 1988. His body was found at the bottom of Beachy Head and the coroner returned an open verdict, although David is always spoken of as having killed himself. A documentary on his life, ‘My Brother David’, was produced by the BBC in 1988, presented by David’s brother Simon. David’s parents left the country soon after their son’s death.

In 1988, Jimmy Savile’s sex offending was never mentioned in the media but in spite of all the We Didn’t Knows – including from Esther – a lot of people did know what Savile was doing.

Jimmy Savile: Esther Rantzen says she believes late TV ...

In 1988 I was told by two people who had been at Leeds University a few years previously that Savile was known to be sexually assaulting ‘young girls’. Two years later someone who’s dad knew Savile via Stoke Mandeville Hospital told me that everyone at Stoke Mandeville was of the opinion that Savile was a ‘twat’ and then in 2000 another person with Stoke Mandeville links told me that Savile was a bloody nightmare and that most of the money ‘raised’ by Savile was wasted on vanity projects, such as the Jimmy Savile Dining Room.

The tabloid press definitely knew what Savile was doing by 1988. They had been given stories but would not publish for fear of litigation.

In 1989, my friend who’s husband worked at the BBC told me that Esther was loathed, the most dreadful workplace bully, ruthless, completely insincere and that ChildLine was widely perceived to be a crude publicity stunt. In those days Esther was being seriously discussed as a potential future DG of the BBC. In 1986 Thatch had personally appointed Marmaduke Hussey as Chairman of the BBC Governors as a result of his close relationship to the Tory Party. Hussey had no previous experience of the BBC and was always seen as Thatcher’s henchman. His had followed a long career with Associated Newspapers, becoming MD; eventually Hussey became Chief Executive and MD of Times Newspapers, 1971-80. Hussey gave up several boardroom appointments when he took up his job at the BBC, but he remained Chairman of the Royal Marsden Hospital until 1998.

In 1988, the Royal Marsden Hospital, along with a number of other institutions, began perpetrating the cancer research fraud funded by the Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research Fund, which involved Dr Peter Macguire, a former colleague of Dr Tony Francis. The fraud became public in 1990 and resulted in the presumed suicide of one of those involved, Professor Tim McElwain of the Royal Marsden Hospital (see posts ‘Reports Of Death Were Greatly Exaggerated’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’). At the time, I was working for the Cancer Research Campaign myself, at the University of Surrey in a team led by Professor Vincent Marks, the brother of the then President of the BMA, Dr John Marks. John Marks and Ken Clarke were at each others throats at the time. It all ended in stalemate because everyone involved was concealing serious wrongdoing, including that of Dafydd et al, who were procuring children for sex, for, among others, Thatcher’s friend and the then Minister of State for Energy with responsibility for oil, Sir Peter Morrison. Unbeknown to me, when I was working for Vincent Marks, the BMA were providing Tony Francis, Dafydd et al with advice as to how to frame me for serious offences.

The Princess of Wales was Patron of the Royal Marsden Hospital and it was one of the beneficiaries of the publicity stunt in New York which involved Di flogging off some of her clothes in June 1997, not long before she died.

Duke Hussey’s wife, Lady Susan Hussey, is a Woman of the Bedchamber to Lilibet and godmother to Prince William. Sir Peter Morrison’s sister Dame Mary Morrison was also a Woman of the Bedchamber to Lilibet. Susan Hussey is the older sister of William Waldegrave, who in 1988 was a Minister in Thatch’s Gov’t and served as Secretary of State for Health, 1990-92.

Within three months of becoming Chairman of the BBC, Hussey had forced the DG Alasdair Milne to resign. Milne was replaced by someone more acceptable to Thatch, Michael Checkland.

See previous posts for the full background on Hussey and Checkland.

Jimmy Savile was a friend of Thatch’s and spent many weekends at Chequers with her. Savile was also a friend of Carlo’s.

Esther knew that if she wanted to reach stratospheric heights at the BBC she couldn’t afford to piss Jimmy Savile off. Or indeed Dafydd, who was part of the network which Savile was using to procure young people for sex with VIPs.

Alison Taylor wrote to Carlo in about 1988 telling him that kids in care in north Wales were being abused. She received a letter from Carlo’s office stating that he could not become involved. In 1988 Carlo was the Chancellor of UCNW, which was facilitating an arm of Dafydd’s trafficking gang. Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster and Carlo’s close friend, owned an estate in Cheshire which was one of the Duke’s main homes. Boys from Bryn Estyn were taken to the Duke’s estate for ‘work experience’ but refused to return again without explaining why.

Jimmy Savile was known to visit Bryn Estyn and one boy maintained that he was raped by a group of men while Savile watched.

In 1988, Savile was one of the senior managers of Broadmoor, along with his pal Alan Franey. Thatcher’s mate Baroness Trumpington aka Trumpers was the Health Minister who appointed Savile to the Broadmoor management task force (see posts ‘Socio-Political Context Of The North Wales Mental Health Services In The 1980s’ and ‘A Pretty Classy Piece Of Operation’).

At that time, Broadmoor was full of patients who had been abused as kids in care and by the mental health services. Some of those patients were from north Wales, including one person who was mentioned in the Waterhouse Report as having been abused while in care in north Wales. In the late 1980s, Di began making much publicised visits to Broadmoor and Rampton, although the nature of her meetings with the patients and which patients Di met, was kept completely secret for reasons of ‘patient confidentiality’, a la Di’s visits to AIDS wards, among whose patients were rent boys who had been forced into sex work when in care in north Wales (see eg. post ‘The Wretched Of The Earth’). I am all for patient confidentiality, I always felt that Savile’s much publicised visits to children’s wards complete with TV cameras were gross, but the reason for the ‘confidentiality’ at the secure hospitals and the AIDS wards was because many of the patients were the victims of serious crime. The information black-out was to protect the high profile people who had offended against them.

Jimmy Savile also wandered at will at Ashworth Hospital. Ashworth Hospital was part of Dafydd’s domain, was run by Dafydd’s friends and had a dreadful reputation, easily as bad as Broadmoor. See eg. post ‘Security, Security’. One patient was battered to death by the staff at Ashworth – the murder was investigated by Dafydd’s mate and umbrella Professor Robert Bluglass. There were two major inquiries at Ashworth and although it was admitted that the prevailing situation there was horrific, the problems were blamed on Dangerous Mental Patients, not the fact that the institution was run by a trafficking ring and that many of the inmates were victims of that ring.

Esther’s sister Priscilla was a social worker for Lambeth Borough Council. Lambeth had a massive problem with their children’s homes being infiltrated by paedophiles and kids in the care of Lambeth were sent to children’s homes in north Wales, where they were abused and then trafficked back down to London or Brighton. Priscilla’s boss was Valerie – now Baroness – Howarth, whom Esther appointed as CEO of ChildLine. ChildLine ignored phone calls from children in north Wales. One woman also maintains that she told Esther that Savile was abusing children. Esther claims to have no memory of this.

Savile and Esther were involved with the NSPCC. The Duke of Westminster was the Life Vice-President of the NSPCC from 1988 until his death in 2016. Here’s Jimmy with another supporter of the NSPCC:

  • Jimmy Savile sought Margaret Thatcher Stoke Mandeville ...

In north Wales, when the former kids in care were giving evidence regarding the abuse that they had experienced previously, support for them was offered via a Helpline run by the NSPCC, although the witnesses were by then adults. The managers of the NSPCC Helpline were the social workers who had facilitated the trafficking gang. One man who was rash enough to accept support from the NSPCC Helpline was found dead. The Helpline managers reassured themselves that they were covered by their insurance for such an eventually. Not only was the NSPCC Helpline run by the traffickers, but the North Wales Police were given the job of driving the witnesses to the venue where they gave evidence. The North Wales Police who had for years ignored all complaints about the abuse of kids in care and who had arrested the kids themselves if they persisted in complaining and who employed a number of officers who were abusing the kids.

I read the other day that Childline was set up after a conversation between Esther and Michael Grade in 1985. In the account that I read, it was claimed that Michael Grade had put the idea to Esther. In the summer of 1985, my friend worked in the box office at the Edinburgh Fringe. She ended up in hot water with her bosses when she refused to pull strings after Samuel Brittan, a journo with the FT and the brother of Leon Brittan, the then Home Secretary, demanded that she arrange tickets and accommodation for him to visit the Fringe, although everything had sold out weeks ago. Samuel was so irate that he wrote to his Big Mate Michael Grade, who wrote a wonderful letter to Samuel, telling him that he was ‘appalled’ at my friend’s ‘rudeness’ and that Grade would definitely get Samuel tickets ‘even if I have to give you my own’.

You SHALL go to the ball Samuel!

When Leon Brittan was Home Secretary, he was handed a dossier compiled by the Tory MP Geoffrey Dickens which named a number of people, including Westminster figures, who were alleged to be abusing children. Brittan later claimed that he couldn’t remember receiving the dossier. Then Brittan did remember receiving it but couldn’t remember where he had put the dossier. Leon Brittan has been named as one Westminster figure who was possibly children himself. While Brittan was Home Secretary, numerous files relating to organised child abuse went missing from the Home Office. Meanwhile, the criminal activities of Dafydd et al continued unhindered in north Wales. See previous posts.

The friend of mine who so angered Samuel Brittan was my best friend from school, who knew what had been happening to me in north Wales. Her mum was a clinical psychologist and her dad was a social worker and they had advised me after Francis began threatening me in the spring of 1985. My friend’s family lived in Somerset, just down the road from my family and Brown’s family. I now know that I and my friends were under surveillance by the security services by then.

I have mentioned in previous posts that members of my family knew/were known by Somerset MPs Tom King, John Biffen and Edward du Cann (see previous posts). King and Biffen were members of Thatcher’s Cabinet and Peter Morrison was a Minister, 1983-85, under Tom King, when King was Secretary of State for Employment. Other west country MPs who knew people who knew relatives of mine were the Tory Jerry Wiggin and Liberals Paddy Ashdown and John Pardoe (see previous posts).

William Waldegrave’s family seat was and still is at Chewton Mendip in Somerset. Previous posts (eg ‘Those Who Are Ready To Serve’ and ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’) describe how some people in Somerset who knew what had happened to me in north Wales but who did not support me did very well for themselves in terms of career progress and money throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s. One such person received a cheque from Coutts. William Waldegrave was a senior person at Coutts.

Dafydd’s partner-in-crime Dr D.G.E. Wood was from a medical family near Bristol. Over towards the Waldegraves’ neck of the Woods…

My friend who had the dust-up with Samuel Brittan in 1985 was driven out of her job at the Royal Television Society in 1991, just after I was forced out of my job at St George’s Hospital Medical School, after she wanted to make a film about north Wales. Her husband worked in the Drama Commissioning Dept of the BBC and was forced out of his job after his boss yelled at him that he’d make sure that he’d ‘never work in this town again’ when my friend’s husband refused to accept a bribe at work. Weeks later he was transferred to the Religious Broadcasting Unit at Manchester and was soon after made redundant.

The troubles of my two media friends escalated after the summer of 1985 when they moved to London to begin their media careers. They were gradually frozen out by most of their former friends from Stirling University – they had all been part of the circle which included Jack, later Lord, McConnell, who was elected as an MSP in 1999, just before the publication of the Waterhouse Report and then bugger me found himself Scotland’s FM in 2001 (see previous posts) – and they subsequently came under attack from gangsters (see post ‘The Turn Of The Screw’).

Lord Jack’s mate:

In the summer of 1987, I went to see Leicester MIND as well as William Bingley, the Legal Director of MIND at MIND HQ in London and told them what I had witnessed and found out about Dafydd et al. I had no idea that not only was Dafydd involved in MIND himself, but that the organisation had been concealing his wrongdoing as far back as the 1960s. I presume that Bingley rang Dafydd and a few other people as soon as I left his office.

Readers might remember the Radio 4 light entertainment programme ‘Loose Ends’ when Ned Sherrin hosted it during the 1980s. It starred Carol Thatcher and although everybody on ‘Loose Ends’ did their ‘we’re not afraid to push the boundaries’ bit, Thatch had the BBC firmly under her thumb at the time. Emma Freud was also a regular on ‘Loose Ends’ and a ‘Loose Ends’ book published in 1988 describes Emma as being ‘the posh bird who giggles in the background’. Which was indeed all that Emma did on ‘Loose Ends’. But her dad was Radio 4 favourite/Liberal MP Clement Freud… Who has since been unmasked as a sexual predator, including towards underaged girls. Clement’s son was PR guru Matthew Freud. See previous posts. Gee, why ever didn’t we hear about Clement’s sexual assaults on teenagers then Matthew?? Emma Freud is married to Richard Curtis, who, with Ben Elton, wrote ‘Blackadder’. Ben Elton’s dad Lewis Elton was a Prof at Surrey University when I worked there in 1988 (see previous posts for details of Ben, his dad and others in their network). Emma and Richard were very conveniently living in New York during the year that Clement’s lecherous ways made headline news. They were off just before the story broke and then back again after the dust had settled.

Victor Lewis Smith, the film, TV and radio producer, had a regular spot on ‘Loose Ends’ from 1986. Victor Lewis Smith also worked on ‘That’s Life’. Lewis Smith is a York University graduate who presented his own programme on Radio York before joining Radio 4. Yorkshire: Savile ruled the region. Lewis Smith has written for ‘Time Out’, ‘Private Eye’, ‘Mail On Sunday’, ‘Esquire’, ‘Daily Mirror’, ‘The Independent’, ‘Harpers and Queen’ and ‘The Guardian’.

Stephen Fry was a regular on ‘Loose Ends’ in the 1980s. The Stephen Fry of ‘I took cocaine in Buck House, aren’t I naughty’ and ‘I’m friends with Prince Charles as well’ fame; the Stephen Fry who was/is a Labour Luvvie and is President of MIND. Fry rather blotted his copy book with supporters of MIND when he sent out a rude tweet about the self-pity of someone who was Sharing re their experience of sexual abuse. Shortly after the furore, Fry tweeted that his earlier tweet didn’t express his views; although it obviously had 20 mins previously. I don’t know why anyone was surprised that Stephen wasn’t as cuddly and fluffy as they presumed; Fry was born into a fair degree of privilege but believes that it had no effect at all on his later achievements and quips that of course public school didn’t help him, he was expelled from several but still ended up at Cambridge after serving a prison sentence. That is indeed true Stephen, but the difference between you and the people with whom I was banged up in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, was that they were not guilty of the crimes for which they went to prison and no-one gave them a second chance yet alone a place at Cambridge when they came out of jail. Not that they all did come out, quite a few were found dead in prison.

Stephen Fry used to joke that prison wasn’t so bad, he wasn’t raped in the showers by Mr Big. Had Stephen been a kid in care in north Wales rather than the son of a Gov’t scientist, he’d have been raped repeatedly before he ever got as far as prison. And Carlo would not have invited him to Royal premises where Fry could enjoy a few snorts, any plea from Stephen to Carlo for help would have resulted in a letter from Carlo’s office saying that he could not get involved.

Stephen Fry famously made TV programmes about being a manic depressive to enlighten everybody else on the matter. Which seriously pissed off a few manic depressives known to me; they all had the same response: ‘he’s in fucking private clinics in America, just look at what is happening to us..’.

I don’t blame Stephen Fry one bit for not checking into Denbigh or the Hergest Unit, but he didn’t do people with serious mental illness any favours with his Public Information Broadcasts. More of a PR job for the Top Docs really wasn’t it Stephen?

I was amused to find that not long after I blogged about the messy reality of the Top Docs ‘diagnoses’ and ‘cures’ for prostate cancer, Stephen sent out a tweet explaining that he had recently had prostate cancer, his prostate had been removed and how grateful he was to the Top Docs for Saving His Life. Stephen Fry has had a good classical education but he knows bugger all about cancer research and the prevailing practices in that field. However he is intelligent enough to know that he cannot ever know whether the Top Docs did save his life or not, because there is not an identical Stephen Fry who did not have his prostate removed to use as a control. So Stephen is now doubly incontinent and impotent, which if it did save his life was worth it; but he does not know whether his life was saved or not. But I know that the PSA tests are throwing up a lot of false positives…

My friends who’s media careers were ruined used to meet Stephen Fry and Ben Elton at various events!

Jonathan Ross also starred in ‘Loose Ends’ in the late 1980s. The Jonathan who was always an offensive twat but who somehow got away with it for years until he and Russell Brand rang up Andrew Sachs and boasted about Brand shagging Sachs’s granddaughter. There was much shock-horror re the upsetting of a national treasure and a granddad, which eclipsed the rather more unedifying spectacle of Brand bragging about whom he had sex with, when the woman concerned probably just wanted to forget all about the toe rag. Woss and Brand were middle aged men, not 15 years old, so I can’t work out why they were ever received in polite company again.

As for Ned Sherrin; er, where shall I start? Originally a barrister, smug, narcisstic and openly gay even back in the days of ‘That Was The Week That Was’ and David Frost etc. So Ned knew all of the Footlights/BBC 1960s crowd, all of whom knew about the Westminster Paedophile Ring, Jimmy Savile etc. Some of them, like Jonathan Miller and Graham Chapman, knew about north Wales too…See previous posts.

Ned was the John Biffen of the BBC; the clever son of Somerset farmers who made it big. Like Biffen’s family, I think that Ned’s family were impressed by him even if they privately raised eye-brows. They were fairly mainstream Somerset farmers of their generation, so they must have been a little surprised at Ned’s activities.

Ned went to Sexey’s School at Bruton; yes it was really called that. When I was a teenager, the other schools in Somerset used to play Sexey’s School at team sports, Sexey’s seemed to take team games quite seriously.

I might return to ‘Loose Ends’ in a future post, I am still digging…

So this was the context in which Alf Dubs’s Amazing True Story was revealed and subsequently broadcast by Esther in February 1988. How did Esther get hold of Lord Alf’s True Story? Amazingly enough, that possessor of a big heart Robert Maxwell was the conduit.

It is often reported that Nicholas Winton, Lord Alf’s saviour, ‘suppressed’ his humanitarian exploits for many years. However, Winton mentioned them in his election material while unsuccessfully standing for election to the Maidenhead Town Council in 1954.

Yet Winton’s rescue achievements ‘went unnoticed for half a century, until in 1988 his wife found a detailed scrapbook in their attic, containing lists of the children, including their parents’ names and the names and addresses of the families that took them in. She gave the scrapbook to Elisabeth Maxwell, a Holocaust researcher and wife of media magnate Robert Maxwell…

Mrs Winton handed that scrapbook over to Cap’n Bob’s wife just like that…

Benny Hill | 100 funny jokes by 100 comedians - Comedy

Winton himself could not remember the reason why this was done. Letters were sent to each of these known addresses and 80 of “Winton’s children” were found in Britain.’

One of whom was Alf!

In February 1988, Alf was invited as a member of the audience to ‘That’s Life’. At one point, Nicholas Winton’s scrapbook was shown and his achievements were explained. Esther asked whether anybody in the audience owed their lives to Winton, and if so, to stand – more than two dozen people surrounding Winton rose and applauded. Well fancy them all turning up like that! But would anyone have actually known if they really all had been saved by Winton? I bet that Esther didn’t take the microphone around to each and every one of them. The BBC were always fiddling figures and rigging situations, those standing up could have been anyone. Furthermore, Alf himself didn’t know that he’d been rescued by Winton until Esther told him…

Although a stockbroker, Winton was also ‘an ardent socialist who became close to Labour Party luminaries Nye Bevan, Jennie Lee and Tom Driberg’. Tom Driberg was a controversial figure in the Labour Party, being a bisexual communist with criminal connections. It was later revealed that Driberg had been working for the security services.

Alf Dubbs served as the Labour MP for Battersea South, 1979-83 and then Battersea, 1983-87. In 1988, when Alf’s True Story received all that heart melting coverage, the Windbag was the Leader of the Labour Party. The Windbag who knew Tony Francis and who was married to Glenys, the school teacher from Holyhead. Glenys’s parents had been Labour Party activists and were good mates with Lord Cledwyn, who in his capacity as the MP for Anglesey and Secretary of State for Wales, 1966-68, as well as a member of the Lords, for decades played a major role in concealing the crimes of Gwynne the lobotomist and Dafydd et al (see post ‘The Cradle Of Filth’). Lord Cledwyn, along with Harold Wilson, Jim Callaghan, the Windbags and the rest of the Labour Party, also concealed the sex offending of George Thomas aka Viscount Tonypandy, who despite being a Labour politician, was a mate of Thatch and a big fan of the Royals.

In Dec 1987, Alison Taylor had been sacked by Gwynedd County Council. She had written to Thatch in Jan 1987 about the abuse of kids in care in north Wales and on Feb 28 1988 Alison wrote to Tony Newton, the then Health Minister.  Alison had also reported abuse to the North Wales Police, only to be told that she lacked credibility and was ‘manipulating’ children into making complaints. By Feb 1988, Mary had won her case against Dafydd et al, but they were refusing to pay her the damages that had been agreed.

By Feb 1988, my official complaint against Tony Francis, Gwynedd Social Services, Dafydd et al was lodged with the NHS and was the responsibility of the Medical Ombudsman in the Welsh Office, Professor Robert Owen. Who was one of Dafydd’s mates from the Liverpool branch of Dafydd’s empire. Robert Owen was the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Liverpool and also worked as a consultant at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (see post ‘In Memoriam – Professor Robert Owen’). While my complaint was supposedly being handled, the crooked lawyer from the Welsh Office, Andrew Park, was busy advising Dafydd et al on fitting me up…

By Feb 1988, the shit was hitting the fan in Cleveland in the form of the child abuse scandal there, which was the result of the gang operating in the north east of England with direct links to Dafydd et al in north Wales. Lord Justice Elizabeth Butler-Sloss was employed to Chair the whitewash for that matter. See post ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas And The Culprits Were Named’. Butler-Sloss was the sister of Michael Havers, who as Attorney General under Thatcher had blocked the prosecution of a number of well-connected paedophiles, including the diplomat and MI6 officer, Sir Peter Hayman.

Alf Dubs’s constituency of Battersea fell within Wandsworth Borough Council. Wandsworth Council, along with the staff of St George’s Hospital Medical School and Springfield Hospital, were facilitating a big paedophile ring which operated in south London (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’). My documents show that there was a direct link between Wandsworth Social Services and Lucille Hughes of Gwynedd Social Services, Tony Francis and Dafydd. There were also direct links between St George’s/Springfield and Tony Francis and Dafydd. Donald Naismith, the Director of Education for Wandsworth, was known to be an active paedophile who was abusing kids in care. See previous posts.

St George’s Hospital had a close historical link with the Duke of Westminster. The Duke’s ancestors had donated the money and land which had led to the establishment of the original St George’s at Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge. When St George’s relocated to their new building in Tooting Broadway in 1980, the Duke demanded of Thatch that the Hyde Park Corner building – worth a great deal of money – should be returned to him, although it belonged to the Dept of Heath. The Duke was allowed to buy the building back for £6k… See previous posts.

In 1988, the year that Alf’s True Story took the world by storm, Professor Sir William Asscher, who as a Top Doctor in Cardiff for many years concealed organised abuse right across Wales, was appointed Dean of St George’s. When in Wales, Asscher had concealed George Thomas’s offending and the crimes of Dafydd et al. The previous Dean of St George’s had been deposed after Oliver Brooke, the Prof of Paediatrics at St George’s, was imprisoned in 1986 for the possession of child porn. Ollie was a big player in a pan-European paedophile ring. Asscher spent the next eight years concealing the rest of the ring at St George’s/Springfield/Wandsworth, on Alf’s doorstep.

William Asscher’s first name was Adolf but he preferred not to use it. Asscher’s family were Dutch Jews who were deported to Westerbork transit camp, where Asscher’s mother secured their release in 1943 by fabricating claims to be of English descent. The family then came to Britain. See previous posts.

Adolf Asscher was just two years younger than Alf Dubbs.

In 1988, matters regarding the paedophile ring in the Leicestershire area were beginning to gather steam. Investigations were beginning after complaints about, among others, Greville Janner, one of Dubs’s fellow Labour MPs. Janner was a barrister, also Jewish and a leading light in the Jewish community. Janner’s father, Barnett Janner, had held Janner’s Leicester seat before him. Barnett Janner was also a lawyer and leader in the Jewish community who had moved to Leicester from Cardiff when Barnett was younger and in search of a seat.

In the autumn of 1987, Dr James Earp of the Towers Hospital, Leicester, concealed the crimes of Dafydd et al in north Wales. See previous posts.

One high profile lawyer in south Wales in 1988 was Leo Abse, a Jewish lawyer who until June 1987 had been the Labour MP for Torfaen. Abse was a crook and a close friend of George Thomas. Abse admitted threatening and paying people off in order to protect George Thomas (see post ‘It Wasn’t On Our Radar’). Leo Abse’s brother Danny was a poet and worked as a Top Doctor in south Wales. The Abse family all had a keen interest in psychoanalysis. See previous posts.

It was Leo Abse who, virtually single-handedly, was responsible for the Children Act 1975, which resulted in hundreds of kids in care being sent to north Wales (see post ‘Cry, The Beloved Country’). Abse twisted the arms of Jim Callaghan and Dr Death in order to help him achieve this aim. Jim Callaghan had known Glenys Kinnock’s parents as long ago as when Glenys was a schoolgirl in Holyhead. Dr Death personally knew some of the Top Docs in north Wales who were facilitating Dafydd’s gang (see posts ‘Dr Death’ and We’ve Been Expecting You…’). Audrey Callaghan was in on the dinners where Leo Abse persuaded Jim Callaghan to support a rewriting of the legislation with regard to the welfare of children. Audrey had colluded with child abuse when she had sat on the London County Council. In 1969, Audrey Callaghan became the Chair of the Board of Governors of Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Savile dropped in on the kiddies trapped in their hospital beds whenever he felt like it. Audrey continued raising funds for GOSH for the next thirty years. The Princess of Wales was President of GOSH from 1989 and Di was involved with the fund-raising efforts of GOSH.

Leo Abse has been investigated for historical sex offences.

Jim Callaghan hated George Thomas but concealed his activities because Thomas was such a big vote puller in south Wales.  George Thomas was an enthusiastic supporter of medical charidees and also did much for the University Hospital in Cardiff, which was where William Asscher worked. Now which south Wales big wigs with feet in Cardiff and London and interests in medical charidees could have possibly been instrumental in the relocation of William Asscher to St George’s when the wheels very nearly came off the bandwagon after Ollie was jailed??

Here’s a smug old bastard who ensured that no-one would vote Labour for a very long time:

Leo Abse had supporters in the form of the Windbags. The Windbags were quoted in the press as having said of Leo Abse that ‘Leo was courageous, highly principled, very funny and totally unique.’ Leo was also very unpleasant.

The Windbags were friends with Claire Rayner, an Angel who by the 1980s was a regular on the BBC and in the tabloids. Rayner knew about organised abuse of children and vulnerable people at the hands of health and welfare professionals, she knew about Jimmy Savile and remained silent about all of it throughout her entire life (see post ‘The Wretched Of The Earth’). Claire Rayner is a good friend of Helena Kennedy QC.

Helena was a leading light in WISH (Women In Special Hospitals) which was established in the mid-1980s to support female patients in Broadmoor, Ashworth and Rampton. Helena knew that scores of women in those institutions were there for no other reason than that they repeatedly self-harmed or tried to kill themselves as a result of the abuse that they had suffered as kids in care or in the mental health system. Helena said nothing about this and she said nothing about Savile’s offending in Broadmoor either, although two female patients there killed themselves because of Savile’s assaults on them. See post ‘Close Your Eyes And Make A WISH’. For years, Helena worked closely with Professor Nigel Eastman of St George’s/Springfield Hospital (see post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’), who was one of those concealing the trafficking ring in south London and who also colluded with Dafydd et al in north Wales (see previous posts).

The Windbag is Wales Patron of the Helena Kennedy Foundation.

Helena Kennedy worked with Claire Rayner on the panel which provided the advice re medical services in HMP Holloway in 1999, when there were great numbers of seriously distressed women in Holloway. The advice provided by Rayner and St Helena was to transfer the women to secure hospitals – where many of them had previously been abused…

The Holloway ‘initiative’ involving Rayner and Kennedy was announced on the day that Miranda’s Prisons Minister Paul Boateng visited Holloway. It was the Windbag who made Paul Boateng a junior Treasury spokesman in 1989.

As a young barrister, Helena Kennedy worked in Took’s Court, Michael Mansfield’s chambers. Mansfield lived in Wandsworth. Mansfield knew what was happening in north Wales and did not respond to it, even when I wrote to him in 1993. Mansfield had handled the trials of some of the men who rioted at Risley Remand Centre in 1989. Mansfield knew that the medical wing at Risley was full of kids in care from north Wales and Dafydd’s patients (see post ‘Include Me Out’). Mansfield didn’t represent them or ever talk about their plight.

Helena Kennedy was President of the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), with which the paedophile social work academic Peter Righton was involved. Righton was employed by Keele University; Mansfield is a Keele graduate.

After discovering his own True Story, Alf Dubs campaigned for Nicholas Winton to be honoured. Winton was knighted in 2002.

Dubs was educated at Cheadle Hulme School, which is in Greater Manchester, near to the wealthy parts of Cheshire eg. Wilmslow, Altrincham. Many of the professional people who concealed Dafydd’s gang which operated in north Wales/Cheshire lived in the Wilmslow/Altrincham area. Dubs studied at the LSE, an institution which educated numerous people who were either involved in the abuse in north Wales/Cheshire or who concealed it. Dubs worked as a local government officer before entering politics. The local government officers trade unions NUPE and NALGO – which merged to form UNISON – contained many people who had been involved with the abuse of children in care. Not only did NUPE and NALGO provide full protection to their members who had abused children, but in some cases – including in north Wales/Cheshire – it was the union reps who had abused the kids. Jeremy Corbyn worked for NUPE before he became an MP and Alun Michael, whom Miranda imposed upon Wales as First Secretary/FM – Michael is another Keele University graduate – also had a deep and meaningful relationship with NUPE.

Dubs lost his Commons seat at the General Election of 1987. From 1988 to 1995, Dubs was Director of the Refugee Council. In 1994, he became a Labour peer. On 9 June 1994, Matt Arnold, the Head of Bryn Estyn, died of an ‘unspecified blood disease’. On 13 June 1994, the trial of Arnold’s friend and colleague at Bryn Estyn, Peter Howarth, for sexually abusing boys in care began. John Smith, the Leader of the Labour Party, had died on 12 May 1994 after Bart’s hospital had been unable to revive him following a heart attack. On 8 July 1994, Peter Howarth was found guilty of child sexual abuse and sentenced to ten years in prison. Miranda became Leader of the Labour Party on 21 July 1994.

Before becoming an MP, Miranda had been a pupil barrister of George Carman QC, the crooked, much-feared barrister who was retained by Jimmy Savile. Cherie worked in Carman’s Chambers until 1988. Before Carman relocated to London after he acted for Jeremy Thorpe at the Old Bailey in 1979, Carman worked in Chambers in Manchester and lived in Cheshire, on Lord Alf Dubs’ old stomping ground. It was the presence of Killer Carman in particular on the planet that caused so many people to feel that they could not print a word about Savile or indeed the rest of the crew, including Dafydd. When Gillian Taylforth, the East Enders actress, sued ‘The Sun’ for libel in Jan 1994, Carman caused her so much distress that Taylforth collapsed in court. The scene was treated as one huge entertaining spectacle. Taylforth lost the case and it cost her a fortune. The Presiding judge was Justice Drake, who had presided over the Dec 1994 trial which resulted when the former North Wales Police senior officer Gordon Anglesea sued ‘Private Eye’ and others for libel after they had published allegations that Anglesea had sexually abused boys in care in north Wales. Anglesea won nearly £400k damages. George Carman QC represented ‘Private Eye’ et al and I believe deliberately threw the case (see posts ‘Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd’ and ‘Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd – A Few Additional Comments’). Shortly after the trial, one of the witnesses, Mark Humphreys, was found dead.

In 2016 Gordon Anglesea was convicted of the historical abuse of boys in care in north Wales and was imprisoned.

George Carman provided legal advice to a number of newspapers, including, for quite some time, to the Mirror. Which employed Miranda’s PR man Alastair Campbell, who doubles up as a MIND ambassador.

For years, people told me repeatedly that if I tried to take on Dafydd et al in court or ever published a word about them, they would produce George Carman QC and I’d be eaten for breakfast. Now I am sure that was true. But I’d like to make the point that the only reason why, after 1987-88, that Carman or someone like him could have devoured me was that by then, Dafydd et al had been allowed to lie and lie and lie – and document those lies as fact and send them to third parties – about me, as well as about my friends who knew what Dafydd et al had done and it would have been those lies that Carman would have relied upon to discredit us. When I first raised concerns about those we know and love, I, Brown, my two media friends and two other academic friends would have made excellent witnesses. We did not have criminal records, we were not alcoholics or addicts and none of us had been involved in sex work, porn etc. None of us had any of the characteristics that were used to discredit every other witness. Furthermore, my medical records were full of written admissions by Dafydd himself, as well as his colleagues, that the most serious crimes had been committed by them. Those documents were unlawfully witheld from me for decades; because the contents would have been enough to put a few people in prison.

The only reason why no-one could find ANYONE considered credible to give evidence against Dafydd et al was that every witness had been systematically trashed, unlawfully, by the forces of the state. I have mentioned many times previously on this blog that I have been made aware that EVERYTHING, from the day that I arrived at UCNW, was recorded by the security services because the whole place was bugged, probably because of the IRA and Welsh activism in UCNW, but also because of the fall-out from Mary Wynch’s case. No-one bugged UCNW – and later St George’s – to protect us. The info gained was used to protect Dafydd et al.

What use is it if MI5 record a gang of people traffickers threatening and intimidating a student who has complained about them and forging documents about her if they do not put a stop to it? What did they think they were doing when they recorded me telling my tutor and Dr D.G.E. Wood that Brown was receiving murder threats, knowing that the idiots Bell and Wood ignored me? The security services, over a period of years, recorded a murdering criminal gang at work. They did not stop them and they did not warn their targets/victims. That is why Killer Carman could put the fear of God into honest witnesses; he knew they all been fitted up and smeared and if anyone challenged him the crooked old bastard would just order a load of lies from members of the gang employed as professional people. Medical records were always an occasion for a party on behalf of the likes of Carman and they’d have had a ball with mine. They were substantially untrue and Carman would have known that, but no-one would have given a stuff.

Carman had such a serious alcohol problem that he employed his own personal Top Doc, who on one occasion set up an intravenous drip when Carman collapsed from alcohol poisoning in court. I bet that none of the ‘not credible’ witnesses to Dafydd et al have ever collapsed in court from alcohol poisoning. I can imagine what would have been said if they did.

Alastair Campbell was for a time as drunk as George Carman. Does that make Alastair someone who is Telling Lies About Top Doctors? No, it makes Alastair a MIND ambassador and the PM’s Press Officer.

It is not true that there was no evidence of a VIP paedophile gang in north Wales/Cheshire, there was mountains of evidence. The full forces of the British state were used to ensure that none of that evidence ever saw the light of day.

As for events in 1994, my documentation shows that while Matt Arnold was dying and Peter Howarth was standing trial and Miranda was busying himself becoming Leader of the Labour Party, those we know and love were carefully planning – yet again – my incarceration in a secure hospital. The plan swung into action after I and another patient had a meeting with two members of the Mental Health Act Commission and told them that Dafydd was sexually exploiting patients and that serious complaints were not being investigated. We were told by the members of the Commission, in front of nursing officer Jeff Crowther, that they had heard such complaints about Dafydd ‘all before’. Our complaints were never investigated, by the Commission or anyone else. At the time, William Bingley was Chief Exec of the Commission. After we made those complaints, Dafydd et al staged the throwing of a brick through his glass door in the early hours of the morning and claimed that I had done it. On the basis of no evidence at all linking me with this crime which had been staged anyway, details of this were given to the High Court in Liverpool to demonstrate what a danger to Dafydd I was. See posts ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ and ‘The Banality Of Evil’.

That brick has now become part of my ‘history’. Ooh she threw a brick through Dafydd’s door. Er – no, we’ve agreed that she didn’t. But we’ve recorded it all anyway and sworn it in an affidavit to Liverpool High Court. So we know that it happened!

In 1994, the Jillings investigation into the abuse of children in the care of Clwyd County Council since 1974 was underway. The Jillings Report was published in 1996 and concluded that the abuse had been horrific and that the organised abuse of children in north Wales had stretched back way before 1974, probably as far back as the 1940s. Not that anyone but Clwyd County Council’s own insurers and lawyers ever read the Jillings Report. On the advice of Michael Beloff QC, the legal adviser to Municipal Mutual, Clwyd County Council’s insurers – Municipal Mutual also insured the North Wales Police – the report was witheld from everyone, including Clwyd’s own Councillors and subsequently pulped. See post ‘It’s A Piece Of Cake…’.

Michael Beloff QC was and is a friend and colleague of Cherie and Beloff was a visitor to Chequers when Miranda became PM. Michael’s dad Lord Max Beloff was a pal of Ioan Bowen Rees, the Chief Exec of Gwynedd County Council who oversaw the abuse of kids in the care of Gwynedd. Lord Max was also involved with Thatcher’s fave university, the private University of Buckingham, of which Thatch served as Chancellor. See previous posts.

To return to Lord Alf, the hero of this story. He was given a peerage – in 1994! – and served as a junior Minister in the N Ireland Office, May 1997-Dec 1999, under Secretary of State Mo Mowlam. Who had spent her career in the north east of England, who knew about the trafficking gang up there which had direct links to Dafydd et al in north Wales and who as N Ireland Secretary knew all about the VIP paedophile at Kincora Boys’ Home, which was linked to the other gangs on mainland Britain. Lord Alf would have known about Kincora as well. Mo’s Top Doctor also assisted in the lies about Mo’s health when she developed a brain tumour. Mo was in a ropey state for a long time and it affected her performance when she was in the N Ireland office; this was known but concealed.

While Alf Dubs was still in the Commons, Labour supporting comedian John O’Farrell worked in Dubs’s office and was a Labour activist in Battersea. In his book, Things Can Only Get Better, O’Farrell described the events leading up to Dubs’s shock defeat by the Conservative John Bowis at the 1987 General Election. In 1986, my two friends who were sacked from the Royal Television Society and the BBC in the early 1990s shared a flat in Bethnal Green with some other Stirling University graduates, one of whom was a woman called Julia, who was then John O’Farrell’s girlfriend. Julia was very hostile to me when I shared the flat with them all for a short while in the autumn of 1986 and her ‘bad vibes’ as my friends described the situation continued towards my friends after I had moved out…

I remember it well, Julia sitting there glowering at us without explanation for hours on end. Never mind Julia, your ex did really well out of it, even if I and my two friends ended up with gangsters after us! O’Farrell wrote jokes for Gordon Brown and other New Labour big wigs…

Why did the Leftie cross the road? Er – some gangsters running a VIP trafficking ring were after his girlfriends’ flatmates and the Labour Party were too fucking spineless to speak up…

O’Farrell successfully campaigned for a new state secondary school to be opened in Lambeth – the Lambeth Academy – and became the Chair of Governors from its opening in 2004 until 2012.

Alf served on an Area Health Authority and more recently on a Mental Health Trust. I haven’t found out which ones, but ooh I can make a few guesses. Dubs was Chair of the Broadcasting Standards Commission until December 2003 and had previously been Deputy Chair of the Independent Television Commission. He is a Trustee of the Open University Foundation.

In the past, Dubs has been a local councillor, Chair of the Fabian Society, Chair of Liberty, a Trustee of Action Aid, a Trustee of the Immigration Advisory Service and of a number of other voluntary organisations.

Three patients at the Hergest Unit who were witness to the serious wrongdoing of Dafydd et al were involved with Action Aid.

In it’s previous incarnation, Liberty was the NCCL and there was much embarrassment when all that business of the NCCL supporting paedophiles’ rights in the 1970s appeared in the press some four years ago. Paul Boateng and Helena Kennedy were both leading lights in the NCCL.

Dubs is a Patron of Humanists UK, formerly known as the British Humanist Association. Claire Rayner served as both Vice-President and President of the British Humanist Association and many other paedophiles’ friends have been involved with the BHA (see previous posts).

In the Lords, Dubs has spoken on varied subjects including the National Probation Service and road safety. Dubs was Chair of the Road Safety Foundation. In north Wales, the Probation Service was involved with the organised abuse of children and vulnerable people.

Dubs lists his main home as a cottage in the Lake District in Cumbria, which enabled him to claim over £26,000 of overnight subsistence expenses in 2007/2008, although he has lived in Notting Hill, west London, since 1964. In May 2009, he argued in justification that Lords regard the overnight allowance as a payment in lieu of salary. “We are the only legislators in the world that don’t get paid,” he said. “The overnight thing is quite generous because it compensates for not having a salary. In practice that’s how it works.”

Dubs is a Vice-President of the Debating Group.

So Lord Alf, how did all that Compassion of yours somehow miss the enormous criminal network with its HQ on your doorstep in Wandsworth which traded in children and vulnerable people? You’ve been the public face of Waifs In Need since 1988. You knew that Ollie at St George’s had been imprisoned and following that there were three high profile scandals at St George’s starring Ollie’s colleagues. Then there were high profile investigations into paedophile rings in Islington, North Wales, Lambeth, Leicester and other places. Your colleague Greville Janner was interviewed under caution with regard to sexual assaults on children in 1990. Don’t tell me that you didn’t notice, because when Greville next appeared in the Commons, he was greeted with a round of applause, so happy were you all to see his his face again.

Lord Alf remained schtum throughout the Waterhouse Inquiry, the more recent revelations re Jimmy Savile and since then the discussions regarding the Westminster Paedophile Ring, including the offending of his fellow Labour peer Viscount Tonypandy.

Ever since Esther discovered Lord Alf’s True Story, at certain times of Peak Distress for Dafydd et al, Lord Alf has been trotted out in the media to remind the world that he was once a Waif who was rescued from Hitler. Little Nell Hodge played the Hitler card the other day when Jeremy Corbyn hurt her feelings; Little Nell was the Leader of Islington Borough Council when the paedophile gang which murdered some of the witnesses operated within that Council. Greville raised the spectre of Hitler as well when he first stood accused; he claimed that the allegations against him were a result of anti-semitism.

Anti-semitism does exist, but we should not allow people who very obviously have questions to answer to muddy the waters by conjuring up images of Hitler which are completely irrelevant to matters under discussion.

Oh, by the way – Esther is Jewish aren’t you Esther?

It is not anti-semitism, this is about NETWORKS which are being utilised. The Jewish network is not the only network that was/is used by this lot, they have used and exploited every network which any of them have ever touched.

The biggest and best network of all at their fingertips is that of the Top Doctors.

Esther felt the full force of the Top Doctors when the BBC and Esther were sued by Dr Sidney Gee in 1984 after Esther featured him on ‘That’s Life!’ in June 1983. Sidney Gee was a ‘weight loss specialist’ who, from what I deduced, certainly had questions to answer. He wasn’t as excessive as Dafydd, but if I wanted to lose weight I would not have gone to Sidney Gee, no matter how desperate I was. Sidney Gee also sued two Top Doctors who appeared on ‘That’s Life’ discussing his treatment of patients, Dr Clemency Mitchell, a GP from Berkshire and Dr Roger Blackwood, a consultant physician at the King Edward Hospital, Windsor. Other defendants were the Chief Presenter of ‘That’s Life’ Gavin Campbell and Gordon Watts, Editor. Gee won the case and it cost the BBC more than a million.

Who acted for Dr Sidney Gee? Er, a Michael Beloff QC…

Esther never touched a Top Doctor again; shortly after Sidney Gee clobbered her, she joined forces with them when she launched her lame anti-child abuse campaign, then her mental health campaign, then her anti-drugs campaign… Child Abuse, Mental Illness, Drug Abuse – can anyone see Dafydd hidden in the picture?

Esther nearly got her fingers burnt again when in 1987, she exposed Holyrood House, a ‘nursing home’ for psych patients in Llandudno, in which patients were being beaten up and abused. Esther named and shamed one Margaret Richards as managing Holyrood House. Esther didn’t mention that all of the patients in Holyrood House had been sent there by one Dafydd Alun Jones and that he knew exactly what was happening to them. Nor did Esther mention the widespread rumours that Margaret Richards was yet another person whom Dafydd was shagging, that she purchased his suits for him – which might have been why they never fitted  – and that she was involved in crime in Llandudno. Esther quietly and very quickly dropped her interest in Holyrood House and returned to ringing the gas board and naming and shaming petty poorly paid officials as Jobsworth of the Month.

Millionaire Top Docs forcing kids and patients into sex work? No, Esther wasn’t going there. However she was happy to provide endless free PR for them.

In 1988 Esther launched another lame show, ‘Hearts Of Gold’. I have mentioned before that for a laugh my friends and I entered Dafydd for ‘Hearts Of Gold’ and asked Esther if Dafydd and his patients could meet Bob Monkhouse because they all loved ‘Bob’s Full House’. We pretended that the letter was from Janice Davies, Dafydd’s lying, crooked Nurse Rached at the North Wales Hospital. We never heard back from ‘Hearts Of Gold’, but years later, I found a copy of my letter to ‘Hearts Of Gold’ in my medical records, with accompanying documentation from those we know and love: Look what she has done now!!! Janice is a Senior Angel at the North Wales Hospital and she has IMPERSONATED Janice!!!

So who was Dafydd’s contact at ‘Hearts Of Gold’ then BBC??

  • Bob Monkhouse's comedy gems found in an old bag | TV ...

Lord Max Beloff was not the only link between Ioan Bowen Rees, the Fiery Welsh Nationalist Who Was Of The Gwerin And Who Hated The English. Ioan – who was incredibly enough an expert on local democracy and even published some highly rated volumes in the field, one of which was highly recommended by Lord Max – co-authored with the Irish historian Owen Dudley Edwards (see post ‘Events, Dear Boy, Events’). Owen Dudley Edwards is the brother of Irish writer Ruth Dudley Edwards. Ruth Dudley Edwards was married to Patrick Cosgrave.

Patrick Cosgrave brought up a Catholic, in poverty in Ireland. Cosgrave rebelled against the severe Catholic piety of his mother and his teachers and acquired a love of British history (or a certain interpretation of it) as a teenager, from reading Kipling, Churchill and Lawrence of Arabia. At University College Dublin, Cosgrave embraced the epithet “West Brit”; at a debate, when an opponent accused him of being “to the Right of Douglas-Home”, Cosgrave retorted that he was “to the Right of Lord Salisbury”. Cosgrave claimed that his grandfather, a warden in Mountjoy Prison, had beaten up Kevin Berry, a Republican rebel executed in 1920. Cosgrave partnered Anthony Clare to win the ‘Irish Times’ debate and the ‘Observer Mace’ debate.

Anthony Clare was an associate of Dafydd’s from the Maudsley, who colluded with serious crime yet was robustly promoted by the BBC as a Caring Top Doc who’s hands were unsullied with the blood of the barbaric asylum docs from past times.

Patrick Cosgrave did his PhD at Peterhouse at Cambridge, which was renowned as a college where gay male students, along with some of their tutors did interesting things such as dressing up in women’s clothes and adopting girls’ names. Michael Portillo took part in such japes when he was at Peterhouse. Cosgrave was was among the Peterhouse alumni nicknamed “the reactionary chic” by the ‘New Statesman’.

Having freelanced for Radio Telefis Eireann (RTE) while at UCD, Cosgrave was appointed as their London correspondent in 1968, when the Northern Irish Troubles revived. Cosgrave met all the leading politicians at Westminster, who were then brushing up on their Irish history and Cosgrave provided RTE with the fruits of his contacts. So Cosgrave knew about Kincora and allowed himself to be used by the British state, who ensured that the crime continued and that those responsible were never held to account.

After helping out the Gov’t which caused so much trouble in N Ireland, in 1969, Cosgrave joined the Conservative Research Dept, which was at the time known for being a haven of gay male Tories, some of whom went cruising for boys when in London and enjoyed holidays at a venue in Italy known as the ‘villa of shame’, where, according to Matthew Parris, ‘willing boys’ were supplied. At the Conservative Research Dept, Cosgrave became a Zionist. His job there included briefing Edward Heath on Prime Minister’s Questions, while continuing to write for ‘The Spectator’.

Cosgrave became political editor of ‘The Spectator’ in 1971, where his numerous, often scathing, articles about Heath’s leadership were influential in effecting the change to Thatch.

In 1975, Cosgrave became Thatch’s advisor while she was Leader of the Opposition. One person who had been key to Thatch becoming Leader of the Tories in 1975 was Peter Morrison. Thatch dropped Cosgrave after winning power in 1979, although as her adviser, he had been viewed as a futire Cabinet Minister. By 1979, Cosgrave’s excessive boozing was impairing his reliability.

Subsequently, Cosgrave was briefly Editor-in-Chief of Tiny Rowland’s Lonrho publications. After this, Cosgrave earned a precarious living as a freelance journalist and by writing books, mainly political biographies. Among other publications, he wrote for ‘The Times’,  ‘The Daily Torygraph’ and ‘The Independent’.

Cosgrave’s 1978 biography of Thatch was faulted for hero-worship. His biography of Enoch Powell, whom he also admired, was made with access to Powell and his correspondence.

Cosgrave obtained a British passport and sometimes attended services of the Church of England, while remaining agnostic.

Cosgrave married three times and divorced twice. It was his first marriage in 1965 that was to Ruth Dudley Edwards, his fellow student at UCD and, later, Cambridge. He married Norma Green, mother of his daughter Rebecca, in 1974; and Shirley Ward in 1981. Shirley Ward was Secretary of the European Democrats at the European Parliament.

Patrick Cosgrave had financial problems from the late 1970s and when Norma Green left him in 1980, Rebecca was made a ward of court. I bet that no-one dared entrust Rebecca’s welfare to Gwynedd Social Services. In 1981 the Inland Revenue filed a tax demand for over £10,000 and Cosgrave was declared bankrupt. His debt of £18,700 was discharged in 1985.

Cosgrave died of heart failure at the age of 59 in 2001, the year following the Waterhouse Report. His poor health was exacerbated by heavy drinking and smoking.

The Defender of Fortress Gwynedd Against Thatch:

  •  It’ll be Christmas before too long, so I’ll get ready to drive around Caernarfon equipped with a loud hailer on the car roof, to give everyone a rendering of some traditional Gwynedd County Council hymns and arias, including ‘Yma O Hyd’ and of course ‘Tomorrow Belongs To Me’. See you at the festivities Dafydd Iwan!

Now Lord Alf, do us all a favour and spare us your Compassion. We’ve all suffered quite enough at the hands of Mindfulness practitioners. When they spread their Compassion around north Wales, the following scenarios were not unusual:

Why would you leave me like this? stock photo
The evidence will speak for itself stock photo

This is what you did. All of you. While you bollocked on about Enemies Within, about being the first Kinnock in a Thousand Generations and Caring and Sharing and Prison Works and being Tough On Crime and Tough On The Causes of Crime. The security services knew exactly what was going on and told their political masters, who decided that it was going to continue.
People who went to the police were found dead. Or sometimes their children were.
Now just fuck off, the lot of you. You have caused enormous suffering and it was my friends who died while you troughed. Fuck off and now. You have been exposed for what you are and we don’t need any more of you mouthing off about Compassion or Stigma or Men Who Won’t Share.

Comedies of Menace

Here’s someone who really should have featured on this blog before now, but then the Corrupt Incestuous Shithouse is so big that I keep finding new residents. Introducing:

Francis Aungier Pakenham, 7th Earl of Longford, 1st Baron Pakenham (5 December 1905 – 3 August 2001), known to his family as Frank Longford and styled Lord Pakenham, 1945-61, was a member of the Labour Party and one of its longest serving politicians. He held a number of Cabinet positions between 1947 and 1968. Longford was politically active up until his death in 2001. A member of a landed Anglo-Irish family, Frank Longford was one of the few aristocratic hereditary peers to have ever served in senior capacity within a Labour government. Longford was known best for his devout Christianity and work as a penal reformer.

Longford was widely unpopular among Labour leaders, was criticised for his lack of Ministerial ability, yet was moved from Cabinet post to Cabinet post. Harold Wilson stated that Longford had the ‘mental capacity of a 12 yr old’. Yet people kept giving him yet more senior jobs. Even after Longford resigned from the Gov’t in 1968, he was invited onto committee after committee after committee. By the 1970s Lord Longford was a standing joke and continually attacked by journos and media outlets across the political spectrum. Yet he wasn’t ever blown out of public life or even simply ignored. I think that I know why…

Pakenham went to Eton, then to New College, Oxford, where he was a member of the Bullingdon Club. He spent a short time working for the ‘Daily Mail’, as a don at Christ Church, Oxford and he also worked as a stockbroker with disastrous results. Pakenham and his wife Elizabeth worked for the WEA at Stoke after they graduated and then in 1931 he joined the Conservative Research Dept, developing education policy for the Tories. By the early 1970s, the Conservative Research Dept was known to be a hotbed of predatory gay men, some of them targeting under-aged boys. As with the hubs of child abuse in certain locations such as north Wales and Lambeth, there are indications that the shenanigans at the Conservative Research Dept had been going on for a very long time. For years, new staff were employed who would ‘fit in’ and were of the same nature as the staff already there…

Frank Pakenham’s conservatism could not have been very deep because his wife Elizabeth ‘persuaded’ him to become a socialist. Elizabeth was from a socialist family – her brother was Harriet Harman’s father, John. The Harmans were a family with a good supply of Top Docs. Elizabeth’s father was the opthalmic surgeon Nathanial Bishop Harman, who also had a Harley Street practice. Nathanial Harman trained at the Middlesex Hospital, where Gwynne the lobotomist trained. Gwynne was afforded lifelong protection by the alumni network of the Middlesex. Harman became the Dean of West London Postgraduate College, an institution which disappeared a long time ago, I think because the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital squeezed it out of existence and took over its functions. My post ‘Interesting Facts’ detailed some of the shocking abuses and frauds which have taken place at RPMS in recent decades which have not received wide publicity. It seems that malpractice was the order of the day at that institution over decades. An article entitled ‘Human Guinea Pigs: A Warning’, published in 1962 in the journal Twentieth Century by Maurice Papworth, highlighted many unethical practices regarding human experimentation at RPMS. According to Papworth, experiments had been carried out without valid consent on vulnerable patients, such as children and the mentally ill.

Most of the people whom I witnessed participating in misconduct and research fraud when I was at RPMS (1986-87) are still working in research or medicine.

Nathanial Harman held a number of offices in the BMA and was a generous benefactor to that organisation. He was also a member of the GMC.

Harriet’s dad John Harman worked at Tommy’s as well as at his Harley Street practice and gave evidence for the defence during the trial of Dr John Bodkin Adams, the Top Doc who was almost certainly a serial killer and one on a bigger scale than Harold Shipman. Furthermore John Harman gave evidence on matters of which he had no experience. See post ‘An Appalling Vista’.

As well as having a general practice, Bodkin Adams worked at All Saints Hospital. The chaplain of All Saints Hospital, Eastbourne, at the time of Bodkin Adams’ arrest in 1956 was the Rev Hubert Brasier, the father of Theresa May. Before Theresa May was elected to the Commons, she was a Councillor for Merton, 1986-94. Merton was on the patch of St George’s Hospital Medical School, many of who’s staff when Theresa was a Councillor there were concealing the crimes of Dafydd and his gang in north Wales and a related gang in south London (see post ‘The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Part III’).

Here’s a Socialist Feminist Who Supports the NHS who also sounds off on matters of which she has no experience:

Harriet HarmanHarriet HarmanHarriet HarmanHarriet Harman

Nanny Harriet wasn’t able to do the jobs in Gov’t to which she was repeatedly appointed, so eventually a Spad was sent to do her jobs for her, one Ed Miliband, who’s Uncle Harry was a consultant at er, Tommy’s.

Dafydd’s mate and umbrella Professor Jim Watson worked at Tommy’s as a ‘sex therapist’, after having worked as a ‘sex therapist’ at St George’s and the Maudsley (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’).

As well as being Harriet’s auntie, Lady Elizabeth Longford was a great-niece of the Tory radical Jospeh Chamberlain and a first cousin once removed of the British PM Neville Chamberlain. Elizabeth Longford made several unsuccessful attempts at becoming a Labour MP. She was an historian, a member of the Royal Society for Literature and a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.

Lloyd Tyrell-Kenyon, the 5th Baron Kenyon, was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, 1953-88. Lord Kenyon was one of the biggest umbrellas for Dafydd and the gang in north Wales and Kenyon’s son Thomas Tyrell-Kenyon was known to be sexually exploiting at least one boy in care in north Wales in the late 1970s. Thomas Tyrell-Kenyon faced no charges at any point, although the boy was sent to a detention centre after Thomas made a complaint that the boy had stolen off him after they had spent the night together. Part of Thomas’s complaint was that the boy had stolen pornographic photos of the two of them together which Thomas had taken using a Polaroid. The boy in question later gave evidence to the Waterhouse Inquiry stating that Thomas had ‘used him for sex’ on numerous occasions. Thomas was not available to give evidence, having died of an HIV-related condition in 1993. See post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’.

Both Elizabeth and Frank Pakenham were devout Roman Catholic converts, although Elizabeth found Frank’s embracing of the RC Church very difficult at first, having been brought up as a Unitarian.

Frank Pakenham joined the British Army but his career as a soldier proved to be a spectacular failure. He was completely unable to cope with life in the Army and the consequent psychological strain soon manifested itself in physical symptoms and in the spring of 1940 Frank was invalided out of the Army as a result of what was then referred to as a nervous breakdown. Subsequently however, Pakenham, together with Maurice Bowra, raised and commanded the South Company of the Oxford City Battalion of the Home Guard. The ridiculous supervened; Pakenham was shot in the foot by the only member of his company to possess any ammunition.

Sir Cecil Maurice Bowra was an English scholar who studied at New College, Oxford and was Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, 1938-70 and VC of Oxford University, 1951-54. Bowra was gay and as an undergraduate was known to cruise for sex. Quotes for which Bowra is well-known include: ‘Buggers can’t be choosers’ (explaining his engagement, later called off, to Audrey Beecham); ‘Buggery was invented to fill that awkward hour between Evensong and cocktails’ or was ‘useful for filling that awkward time between tea and cocktails’; and ‘Splendid couple — slept with both of them’ (on hearing of the engagement of a well-known literary pair).

As an undergrad Bowra was very sociable and his circle included the Tory politician Lord Bob Boothby, who was bisexual and managed to have affairs with Harold Macmillan’s wife Dorothy as well as with a great many others including a range of rent boys and, it is alleged, Ronnie Kray (see previous posts). Bowra was a friend of and shared lodgings with Viscount Cyril Radcliffe, the Law Lord who was the first Chancellor of the University of Warwick, 1965-77.

After being called to the Bar, Cyril Radcliffe joined the chambers of Wilfred Greene, later the Master Of The Rolls. During WWII Radcliffe joined the Ministry of Information, becoming DG by 1941. There he worked closely with Minister Brendan Bracken, who was Minister of Information, 1941-45. Viscount Bracken is best remembered for opposing the Bank of England’s co-operation with Hitler and for subsequently supporting Churchill’s prosecution of WWII against Hitler.

Bracken’s first career was as a newspaper publisher and magazine editor. Many of Bracken’s early magazine stories included a political flavour and he commissioned articles from a wide range of politicians such as Churchill and Mussolini. Business and politics permanently overlapped in his life, in a similar way to the career of his occasional friend Lord Beaverbrook. He needed politicians for stories and they needed the publicity given by his publications.

Bracken was PPS to PM Churchill, 1940-41 and then he was First Lord of the Admiralty, 25 May 1945-26 July 1945. Lord Louis Mountbatten was First Sea Lord, 1955-59 and had reached a senior level at the Admiralty by the time that Bracken was First Lord, so Bracken will have known about the allegations that Mountbatten was a molester of under-aged boys, as well as the other sex and spy scandals at the Admiralty of that era (see post ‘The Defence Of The Realm’).

Bracken’s friend Cyril Radcliffe was involved in the Partition of India. Radcliffe was a man who had never been east of Paris, but nonetheless he was given the Chairmanship of the two boundary committees set up with the passing of the Indian Independence Act. Radcliffe was faced with the task of drawing the borders for the new nations of Pakistan and India in a way that would leave as many Hindus and Sikhs in India and Muslims in Pakistan as possible. Radcliffe submitted his partition map on 9 August 1947, which split Punjab and Bengal almost in half. The new boundaries were formally announced on 14 August 1947 – the day of Pakistan’s independence and the day before India became independent of the UK. Louis Mountbatten in his capacity as Viceroy and Governor-General of India was also involved in the Partition (see post ‘The Defence Of The Realm’).

Radcliffe was born in Llanychan, Denbighshire. My post ‘Anthem For Doomed Youth’ details how in 1968 three students from Sussex University caused a sensation when they threw red paint over a visiting US official in a protest related to the Vietnam War. One of the students was Merfyn Jones, who later became VC of Bangor University and who grew up in Gwynedd. Asa Briggs, the VC of Sussex University at the time, was one of those with links to the security services who concealed the early organised abuse of those associated with Dafydd’s gang. Briggs bore a lifelong grudge against the three student protestors and contributed to the serious fire from Dafydd’s gang that was aimed at Merfyn when he became VC of Bangor University in 2003. After he graduated from Sussex, Merfyn undertook postgraduate work at Warwick University where he was involved in the student activism which revealed that Warwick was doing a few things that it probably should not have been doing. Radcliffe was Chancellor at the time. I had not realised that Radcliffe came from Denbighshire. The paedophiles’ friends being what they are, Radcliffe’s links to north Wales will have been used to maximum advantage.

Peeling Oniontown - VICE

In 1992 Wadham College named its Bowra Building in Maurice Bowra’s honour.

I know someone who studied at Wadham College while Bowra was Warden who always cheerily referred to his old college as ‘Wadham and Gomorrah’. I just thought that it was a nice little quip but I wonder if he was joking about matters of which I knew nothing.

Other high profile alumni of Wadham and Gomorrah include the former Archbishop of Canterbury who originated from Swansea, Rowan Williams, Melvyn Bragg the MIND Ambassador and Michael Foot. Not only was Michael Foot the Leader of the Labour Party while everyone in that Party sat on the barrel of crap which included George Thomas as well as Dafydd et al in north Wales (Oh, No! It’s The Pathetic Sharks…’), but Footie was Lord President of The Council, 1976-79. The Lord President of the Council doubles up as the visitor for Bangor University (UCNW). While Foot was Lord President of the Council, Shirl was asked by Dafydd Wigley if she would, in her capacity as Education Secretary, hold a public inquiry into the running of UCNW by Sir Charles Evans, such was the chaos and dysfunction within that institution. Shirl refused. The chaos and dysfunction were a result of Charles Evans allowing Dafydd et al to use the College to run their sex trafficking ring as Footie and Shirl were well aware. See post ‘We’ve Been Expecting You…’.

One other distinguished alumnus of Wadham and Gomorrah is Lord John Dyson who was a High Court judge, 1993-01; Lord Justice of Appeal, 2001-10; Justice of the Supreme Court, 2010-12; and Master of the Rolls, 2012-16. John Dyson was called to Bar at Middle Temple, as was Sir Ronnie Waterhouse. Dyson and Waterhouse knew each other well.

1940 was the year that Frank Pakenham became a Catholic as well as being invalided out of the Army because of his nervous breakdown. Elizabeth Pakenham joined the Church of Rome six years later.

Frank Pakenham embarked upon a career in politics which had begun with his election as an Oxford City Councillor in the 1930s. Oxfordshire had a major problem with the abuse of kids in its children’s homes by the 1950s, which probably stretched much further back than that. This was concealed by Top Doc Dr Vladimir Kahan and his social worker wife Barbara, who became a social work adviser on children in care to successive Gov’ts from the early 1970s onward (see post ‘Always On The Side Of The Children’).

In 1945 Pakenham stood for election in Oxford as the Labour candidate but was beaten by the Tory Quintin Hogg, who later became Lord Hailsham and who performed a valuable service himself concealing the crimes of Dafydd et al for decades. Pakenham’s obituaries maintained that Clement Attlee ‘admired’ Pakenham’s ‘passion for social outcasts and tried to harness it’. Pakenham himself stated that his nervous breakdown in 1940 gave him an understanding of people who had been rejected by society. Pakenham experienced a breakdown at a time when such an event was heavily stigmatised – I get the impression that it was particularly so among men, women were expected to go a bit mad at times by Top Docs and certain others – and I’d be interested to know how this was negotiated when Frank Pakenham entered politics, because a ‘nervous breakdown’ was quite a career-killer in 1940 and people were not allowed to forget that they’d had the temerity to have one.

Pakenham’s obituaries tell us that Attlee was ‘persuaded’ to give Pakenham a peerage, to bring a ‘youthful thinker’ to the sparsely populated Labour Lords benches. Pakenham had really only done one thing until he bagged that peerage, which was to act as William Beveridge’s right hand man when Beveridge compiled his report on the welfare state. Upon receiving a peerage, Longford was immediately appointed a Lords Whip by Attlee, which suggests that Attlee had confidence that Pakenham would be able to twist the arms of other Labour peers. I doubt that Pakenham would have built up sufficient muscle to do that as a result of his short stint working for the ‘Daily Mail’, his time as a stockbroker which resulted in him losing a great deal of money, him being the most hopeless soldier that the British Army had ever seen, having a nervous breakdown or even by his assistance with the Beveridge Report.

However, by the time that Attlee gave Frank Pakenham a peerage, Frank had been visiting prisons two to three times/week for more than 10 years, holding in-depth conversations with those inside. He will have learnt that some inside prison were innocent and that a great many others had knowledge of wrongdoing in high places rather more serious than the wrongdoing for which they had been sentenced. The language that is used to discuss sexual abuse has changed since the 1940s but many aspects of the problem have not changed. As at the present time, people in dominant positions in society were having sex with people in far more vulnerable positions and some of those people will have been having sex with children, including children of the same sex as them. The stakes were considerably higher for people doing this in the 1940s, because homosexuality was illegal and a prison sentence and total social ruin for one and even one’s family a la Oscar Wilde was still the order of the day. What if Frank had learnt a bit about such matters during all that prison visiting?

In 1947, Frank was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster aka Deputy Foreign Secretary with special responsibility for the British zone in occupied Germany. He made headlines by telling German audiences that the British people forgave them for what had happened during WWII and was later credited by the first West German Chancellor with being among his country’s founding fathers. In May 1948, Pakenham was moved to the lower-profile role of Minister of Civil Aviation and became a Privy Councillor. He continued in this post until May 1951. From May 1951 until the fall of Attlee’s administration in October 1951, Longford was First Lord of the Admiralty. We’re back to Mountbatten and his pals again…

After Labour lost the 1951 General Election, Pakenham became Chairman of the Society for the Mentally Handicapped. At the time the mentally handicapped were usually institutionalised – the parents of such children were nearly always advised to do this by Top Docs – and were frequently treated appallingly in long-stay hospitals whose staff were completely unaccountable. Sexual exploitation, as well as physical assault, was common. Pakenham will have been well-aware of that.

During the period of time that Labour was out of office between Attlee and Wilson, Hugh Gaitskell kept Pakenham  at the centre of Labour Party affairs. Gaitskell and Pakenham had shared rooms at Oxford and Gaitskell used to refer to Pakenham as his ‘oldest friend’. Pakenham remained at the centre of things even when he became Chairman of a City clearing bank, the Anglo-Irish Bank, in 1955, which caused a rumpus in the City because Pakenham had been blackballed from at least one financiers’ club. However during Pakenham’s nine years as Chairman, the Ango-Irish Bank grew more quickly than any other London clearing bank.

During this time, Pakenham also contributed to a series of ‘learned reports’ on penal reform. He Chaired a special Labour Party Committee – Harold Wilson appointed him – which in 1963 published its Report, ‘Crime – A Challenge’. It recommended the abolition of capital punishment, after-care for prisoners and was the basis for the introduction of the parole system in 1965 that remains substantially unchanged today.

In 1961, Pakenham inherited from his older brother Edward the earldom of Longford and from then onward was generally known to the public as Lord Longford.

When Labour returned to power in October 1964 under Harold Wilson, Longford was appointed Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the Lords, despite the fact that Wilson had little respect for him. It was presumed that these Cabinet positions were simply a sop to Gaitskellites. In December 1965 Longford became Secretary of State for the Colonies, continuing as Leader of the House of Lords. After four months at the Colonial Office, he was removed from the post for failing to master his brief and again became Lord Privy Seal in April 1966.

Longford spoke against the 1967 Bill to facilitate abortions which did not endear him to many on the left of the Labour Party.

Wilson often talked about sacking Longford from his Gov’t, which is believed to have led to Longford’s resignation as Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords in January 1968, although Longford’s stated reason for resigning from the Gov’t was because of the abandonment of the commitment to increase the school leaving age. Tony Benn, Richard Crossman and Barbara Castle all recorded their relief at Longford’s departure from Gov’t in their diaries. However HM Queen Lilibet continued to hold Longford in high esteem.

After 1968, Lord Longford concentrated on his campaigns and publishing. In the Lords his two main interests were Ireland and prisons policy. Longford thought of Ireland as his home, although he didn’t live there. He was an old friend of Eamon de Valera, who was a Commandant in the 1916 Easter Uprising and later became Taoiseach, 1957-59 and President of Ireland, 1959-73. When in Wilson’s Cabinet, Longford caused a stir by attending the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Easter Rising and being  photographed next to de Valera.

In 1970 Longford became Chairman of Sidgwick and Jackson the publishers. As with his Chairmanship of the Anglo-Irish Bank, business boomed under this utter incompetent who had dirt on a great many in high places. Longford Chaired Sidgwick and Jackson for 10 years and the company benefited in particular from Ted Heath’s books on sailing.

In 1955/56, Longford set up New Bridge Foundation, an organisation that aimed to help prisoners stay in touch with society and integrate them back into it. New Bridge was the first organisation concerned with prisoners’ welfare. In 1990 New Bridge set up ‘Inside Time’ magazine, the only national newspaper for the UK’s prison population. Journalist Rachel Billington, Longford’s daughter, is involved with the title. Longford organised many debates on prison reform in the House of Lords from the 1950s onward.

In 1970, Longford established New Horizon, the first drop-in centre for homeless teenagers. Longford was a regular at New Horizon, dropping in until his death in 2002, chatting to the teenagers who were often rather confused by Longford’s interest in them. Longford could not have failed to have noticed that huge numbers of those homeless teenagers had run away from the care system because they were being grossly abused.

Longford was a leading figure in the National Festival Of Light of 1971, which protested against the commercial exploitation of sex and violence, while advocating the teaching of Christ as the key to recovering moral stability in the nation. Longford was advised against involvement with the National Festival Of Light by his friends, but was said to have been influenced by Mary Whitehouse.

Whitehouse was a ‘morality campaigner’, a former teacher from the West Midlands. Whitehouse was quite preoccupied with the sort of sex education that kids in schools were receiving and the alleged deleterious effects on them as a result of the ‘filth’ that Whitehouse believed that she was watching the BBC screen at the time. Whitehouse was keen on quoting the views of Top Docs and psychiatrists on such matters. These will of course have been those who were colluding with Dafydd and the gang. Whitehouse launched a one-woman campaign against Dr Martin Cole, a sex therapist who produced a sex education film for schools called ‘Growing Up’ (see post ‘The White Heat Of This Revolution’). Whitehouse alleged that Martin Cole’s clinic was a front for prostitution. Cole worked with Dr Philip Cauthery, a sexologist who was also the students’ doctor at Aston University. Cauthery was uncaring and lethal and was felt by many to be one of the key reasons for the high suicide rate among students at Aston. Cauthery sat on the Editorial Board of ‘Forum’ magazine, the small ads of which were being used by paedophiles. Cauthery was never placed under the spotlight in the way that Martin Cole was, almost certainly because Cauthery was a Top Doctor who enjoyed the protection of the medical establishment, whereas Cole was a non-clinical academic.

The National Festival Of Light was co-founded by the journalist and author Malcolm Muggeridge, who was named as a dreadful old groper after he died (see post ‘The Creme de la Creme’) and Evangelical Christian missionaries Peter and Janet Hill were also involved. Cliff Richard was a key supporter of the NFOL from its onset and Archbishop Trevor Huddleston was also a supporter. Cliff was a close friend of Cilla, who was a personal friend of Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain of St George’s Hospital Medical School, during the years when Chamberlain and his colleagues were perpetrating research fraud as well as colluding with organised child abuse, including the crimes of Dafydd’s gang (see post ‘Now Then…’). Trevor Huddleston was the subject of allegations that he indecently assaulted children. Huddleston didn’t deny the allegations but simply packaged his behaviour as being harmless and ‘innocent’. See post ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’.

Grassroots support for the NFOL came from Anglicans, Baptists, Plymouth Brethren and Pentecostal Church denominations. Dafydd has longstanding links with the Anglican Church (see post ‘Amber Rudd, The Miners’ Strike And A Memory Jogged’) and the Welsh Baptist Church (see post ‘A Serious Moral Collapse’).

A working committee was established with Colonel Orde Dobbie (a Social Services administrator), Eddie Stride (a former shop steward and trade unionist, later the Rector of Christ Church Spitalfields), Gordon Landreth (General Secretary of the Evangelical Alliance), Rev. Jean Darnall (Pentecostal Evangelist), Nigel Goodwin (a professional Christian actor) and Steve Stevens (a missionary aviator). Additional input was received from a larger Council of Reference which included well-known politicians, lawyers, doctors, trades unionists, bishops, ministers and other public figures such as actors Dora Bryan and David Kossoff.

Dora Bryan hobnobbed with all the best luvvies who ended up in disgrace, including the cast of the Carry On films and when she was older, Michael Barrymore. David Kossoff became involved with the NFOL as a result of his anti-drugs campaigning which he took up when his son Paul developed drug problems. Paul Kossoff played with the rock band ‘Free’ and died from complications resulting from his drug use in 1976.

On 25 September, approximately 45,000 people assembled in Trafalgar Square for the NFOL rally. A number of statements and proclamations were read out and received with applause by the crowd. Some called for a halt to the commercial exploitation of sex and violence. They warned that the ‘positive values’ of love and respect for the individual and the family were under serious threat. At the conclusion of the speeches, the crowd began to wind through the streets to Hyde Park, singing Christian songs as they went. In Hyde Park they joined those unable to get into Trafalgar Square. The Hyde Park rally started at 4 pm, where a number of Christian music groups proclaimed the same message. Among the performers were Cliff Richard, Dana and Graham Kendrick. Rev. Jean Darnall led the rally. The main speaker in the park was Hollywood street evangelist Arthur Blessitt.

In the days that followed perhaps the warmest support came from Roman Catholic periodicals.

After 1971 the NFL committee continued to meet and gradually evolved into the Christian organisation Christian Action Research and Education (CARE), changing its name in 1983.

Longford’s anti-porn campaigning made him the subject of derision and he was labelled by the press as Lord Porn when he and former prison doctor Christine Temple-Saville set out on a wide-ranging tour of sex industry establishments in the early 1970s to compile a self-funded report, published in 1972.

Like Longford, Christine Temple-Saville will have known exactly who was sitting in prisons and how many of them had been framed with the assistance of her Top Doc colleagues (and possibly her as well) after they were witnesses to the abuse rings operating within children’s homes/other care settings. Temple-Saville will have known about Dafydd, if she didn’t actually know him personally. The press made much of Longford’s visits to strip clubs in Copenhagen and he was accused of enormous hypocrisy.

Despite the hilarity which Longford’s Report caused in so many quarters, in 1972 Lilibet made him a Knight of the Garter. That’s the Lilibet who’s Woman-of-the-Bedchamber Dame Mary Morrison was the sister of Sir Peter Morrison, who spent a lifetime molesting kids in care.

It was Lord Longford’s support for Myra Hindley to be released from prison on parole which made him a household name and led to the soubriquet Lord Wrongford from the tabloid press, which largely opposed Hindley being released. Longford’s contact with Hindley became public knowledge in 1972 and allegations of hypocrisy were frequently made against him. In 1977, 11 years after Hindley was convicted of two murders and being an accessory to a third murder, Longford appeared on television and spoke openly of his belief that Hindley should now be considered for parole as she had shown clear signs of progress in prison and now served long enough for the Parole Board to assess her suitability for release from prison. He also supported Hindley’s claims that her role in the Moors Murders was merely that of an accomplice and that she had only taken part due to Brady’s abuse and threats. There is considerable evidence to suggest that this was true but the facts concerning Hindley’s case were lost among the hysteria, the downright lies, the corrupt practices of the police officers and lawyers involved and of course the extreme distress of the parents of the dead children who were never given the support that they should have had.

In 1985, Longford condemned the Parole Board’s decision not to consider Hindley’s release for another five years as ‘barbaric’ and his campaign for Hindley continued even after ‘she admitted to two more murders in 1986’. Hindley’s ‘admission’ to two more murders in 1986 has become part of the mythology of Hindley. I don’t think that she did ‘admit’ to two more murders in 1986. The detectives who had worked on the case originally – some of whom were corrupt – visited Hindley out of the blue in prison at the end of 1986, told her that they ‘knew’ that Brady had murdered more children and asked her if she knew where those children were buried. Hindley explained that she did not, neither had she witnessed the further two alleged murders. However she agreed to accompany a police team onto  Saddleworth Moor to show the police the places that Brady used to enjoy visiting lest the police wanted to excavate.

Myra Hindley accompanied the police to Saddleworth Moor in appalling winter weather, in conditions that were  not conducive to a search for human remains. She told the police that it was so long since she was there that she did not recognise the landscape. The police ‘search’ was accompanied by full media coverage. At the same time, TV journos approached the father of one of the children murdered/thought to be murdered by Brady and/or Hindley and asked him if he wanted to kill Hindley. The distressed father obediently produced a kitchen knife from his bag for the cameras while the journos purchased him pints.

The sudden interest of Peter Topping, a clapped-out dodgy Greater Manchester policeman, in Myra Hindley and Ian Brady once more at the very end of 1986 has never been explained. Neither has it ever been explained why Topping had an overwhelming urge to conduct a police search of Saddleworth Moor at the one time of year when a search should not be conducted. No-one explained why the media were told what was happening and invited to the scene, particularly as much was made of the risk to Hindley’s life from well-wishers while she was on the moor.

The year before Topping had the overwhelming urge to visit Hindley in prison, tell her that she had helped Brady commit two more murders and ask her if she would agree to visit Saddleworth Moor in a blizzard, in front of TV cameras while people were asked to describe to journos how they were going to murder her, Brady had been transferred from Gartree Prison in Leicester to Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside. Dafydd’s mates were running Ashworth at the time and the place was full of witnesses to/victims of the wrongdoing of Dafydd and his accomplices (see post ‘Security, Security’). Dafydd’s mates also ran Gartree Prison and after many years spontaneously declared Brady insane rather than ‘wicked’ and had him transferred to Dafydd’s inner sanctum at Ashworth.

I can remember events very well at the time because Dafydd et al were fully engaged in their efforts to deal with another Evil Young Woman  – me. The very people who were busy ‘treating’ Ian Brady in Ashworth were fabricating evidence, perjuring themselves and holding ‘case conferences’ without my knowledge to which people whom I had never met were invited to tell the assembled company how dangerous I was. I had been illegally imprisoned in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh in Dec 1986, just days before  Myra was in the news once more…

When this saga was being played out on TV – with all us patients in Denbigh watching it – I dared proffer my opinion that this was an unedifying spectacle and I was a little fed up of hearing corrupt Top Docs denouncing people as evil and dangerous. An Angel called Ingrid shouted at me that Myra was ‘evil’, that as a student Angel Ingrid had watched the trial of Brady and Hindley at Chester Assizes and that everyone in the court was in tears, including Ingrid. I am sure that listening to murder trials take its toll, but Ingrid was at the time of her histrionics in my direction overseeing a group of patients illegally imprisoned by people who were running a paedophile/trafficking ring. Some of those patients were held in a dungeon.

The lawyers involved in the trial of the Moors Murderers included Attorney General Lord Elwyn-Jones, Lord Emlyn Hooson and Sir Ronald Waterhouse. All three of these people were bent, knew about Jeremy Thorpe’s shenanigans but kept quiet and also concealed the crimes of Dafydd and the gang in north Wales/Cheshire.

Why Brady and Hindley’s trial took place at Chester no-one has been able to explain. They didn’t live near Chester, neither did the murder victims and the murders were not committed near Chester. After the event Peter Topping maintained that it was to ensure that they received a ‘fair trial’. How that was supposed to happen when Topping and some of his colleagues were bent cops, when they were receiving and passing information on to people known to the accused before the trial and by the trial being held in a location known even then as being the hub of legal and judicial corruption as a result of a longstanding paedophile gang operating in the area was not clarified.

Dafydd and the gang had links with corrupt officers in Greater Manchester Police and other corrupt professionals in the Manchester region (see posts ‘Top Of The Cops’ and ‘A Stalker’s Network’.)

For the record: Ian Brady was a deeply unpleasant man. He freely admitted to a series of crimes, including the murders of three children but always denied any involvement in the murders of two others which were attributed to him. He expressed the view that the police and legal system were corrupt and that the Top Docs were a bunch of lying idiots who didn’t know their arses from their elbows. Myra Hindley was abused as a girl and experienced violence at Brady’s hands. Had her trial occurred these days, much would be made of Myra’s very difficult and abusive upbringing. Had I been Myra Hindley I don’t think that any of that would have caused me to assist in the abuse and murder of three children, but I’m not Myra Hindley, I don’t know what it was like to be her and because so many people involved in her ‘assessment’, the investigation of the crimes with which she was charged and the continued ‘assessment’ of her after she was convicted were corrupt as fuck and involved in serious crime as well as organised abuse themselves, I am not sure that much of what we read about Evil Myra was true.

I have in my possession 10,000 documents compiled by the associates of those involved with Brady and Hindley’s case which clearly demonstrate perjury, conspiracy and attempts to pervert the course of justice over a period of many years with regard to me because I had complained about Gwynne the lobotomist, Dafydd and Tony Francis. It was documented that I had stabbed people, strangled them, ‘served a prison sentence for attacking someone with a knife’, held an Angel hostage and sexually assaulted a psychiatrist. The documents are accompanied by other documents written by the same people admitting that none of these allegations are true but nonetheless contain detailed plans of how I will be framed for these offences. There are also letters to ‘witnesses’ instructing them with regard to what they need to say about me in court. There is even a letter signed by Patricia Gaskell, the former hospital solicitor for Ysbyty Gwynedd, asking for ‘more nurses down the police station to complain about [me] please’.

When Evil Myra was told that she had been involved in two more murders and was taken to Saddleworth Moor to identify the locations of the bodies, Alison Taylor had recently expressed repeated concerns about the abuse of kids in care in north Wales, Mary Wynch had made legal history by successfully suing Dafydd and the gang (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’) and I had begun complaining and was refusing to go away as well.

In July 1986 Iain Muir, Deputy Headmaster of the Bryn Alyn Community School, was convicted in the Crown Court at Mold of unlawful sexual intercourse with a female under the age of 16, for which he received a sentence of six months imprisonment. The victim was resident at the school for just over three years and was 15 years old when she left.

In October 1986 DCS Gwynne Owen’s report to the Crown Prosecution Service following concerns raised by Alison Taylor and complaints of abuse from children criticised Alison Taylor and accused her of ‘manipulating’ people to make complaints.

In Dec 1986, Gwynedd County Council informally suspended Alison from her job as a social worker, Dafydd abducted and illegally imprisoned me on 13 Dec 1986, Evil Myra was taken to Saddleworth Moor on Dec 16 and was suddenly all over the media once more.

On 18 December 1986, Professor Oliver Brooke, Prof of Paediatrics at St George’s Hospital Medical School, pleaded guilty to six counts of procuring and distributing child pornography at Kingston Crown Court and was sentenced to one year in prison. Brooke was only charged with a small number of offences but was in reality a key player in a pan-European child abuse ring of which Dafydd’s gang in north Wales were a part.

Now perhaps Dafydd would like to tell us all why Peter Topping decided that the world had to be reminded of Evil Myra once again just when Ollie Brooke was up in court.

Lord Longford will have known of Evil Myra’s abusive childhood and he will have known that those involved with her case and shouting about Evil Myra were running a paedophile gang themselves. Longford remained schtum.

Evil Myra’s public appearance on Dec 16 1986 further strengthened media and public opinion that any reports of progress by Hindley in prison were ‘nothing more than a ploy to boost her chances of gaining release from prison’. Well she was Evil Myra who Manipulated wasn’t she. Just like Alison Taylor and I Manipulated.

Whilst all this was going on, Douglas Hurd was Home Secretary.

In 1990, David Waddington the Home Secretary ruled that ‘life should mean life’ for Evil Myra, who had been told by earlier Home Secretaries and High Court judges that she would have to serve a minimum of 25 and then 30 years before being considered for parole. These were the Waddington and the previous Home Secretaries and High Court judges who colluded with Dafydd’s gang as well as the linked gangs across the UK/Europe, including the gang in south London of which Brooke was a leading light.

Hindley was not informed of Waddington’s decision until December 1994, and Longford later expressed his ‘disgust’ at this ruling. The next three Home Secretaries all agreed with Waddington’s ruling. They also all colluded with Dafydd et al. Hindley appealed against her whole life tariff in the High Court in December 1997, November 1998 and March 2000, but each appeal was rejected. In Dec 1997 and Nov 1998 the Waterhouse Inquiry was underway. The Waterhouse Report was published in Feb 2000, one month before Evil Myra had yet another appeal rejected. Longford maintained that Evil Myra was a changed woman who was no longer a threat to society and had qualified for parole. He regularly commented, along with several other supporters of Evil Myra, that she was a ‘political prisoner’ who was being kept in prison for votes, to serve the interests of a succession of Home Secretaries and their respective Gov’ts. This was true, although the general public would still have been utterly unsympathetic if they had known. But what would the general public have said if they had been made aware that scores of the lawyers, judges, Top Docs and police officers directly involved with decisions regarding Evil Myra were colluding with child abuse, including the murders of witnesses, themselves?

In March 1996, Longford backed up Evil Myra’s claim in an Oxford University magazine that she was still in prison so that the Conservative Gov’t – trailing in the opinion polls since the autumn of 1992 – would win more votes. This claim was met with anger by the mothers of two of the Moors Murders victims, including Ann West, who remained at the centre of the campaign to ensure that Evil Myra was never released and once again vowed to kill Evil Myra if she was set free. Longford regularly condemned the media for ‘manipulating’ West and feeding her desire for revenge and was particularly critical of ‘The Sun’ newspaper for its ‘exploitation’ of West – referring to her numerous television and newspaper interviews in which she argued against any suggestion of Evil Myra ever being paroled, often threatening to kill her if she was ever set free. In 1986, Longford reportedly told West that unless she forgave Evil Myra and Brady, she would not go to Heaven when she died.

This is all deeply ironic. The tabloid press undoubtedly manipulated the parents of Brady’s and Hindley’s victims but then so did everyone involved in the cases, including Longford.  It would have been more sensible of Longford to have kept his thoughts to himself re the need for Ann West to forgive Hindley and Brady because his relationship with Ann West was nowhere near good enough for him to make such suggestions without causing great upset. Interestingly enough, for many years, staff of the mental health services stressed to me that I was in a bad way because I hadn’t ‘forgiven’ Dafydd et al for their oh so minor ‘misjudgements’ with regard to me. Not only were Dafydd et al guilty of a great deal more than a few ‘misjudgements’ but documents now in my possession show that while people were busy telling me that poor old Dafydd never meant any harm at all and gosh I really was over-reacting, those very people were at the time conspiring with Dafydd to lie and perjure themselves in order to have me banged up for a very long time because they were so worried at the prospect of Brown and me one day publishing all this. By that time, the main reason why I wasn’t ‘recovering’ was that I was constantly being arrested for ludicrous offences, I was being actively denied effective treatment for a mood disorder and my property (and occasionally me) was being attacked by meatheads who had been put up to this by Dafydd et al.

Every time that I was told that my ‘outbursts’ and ‘baseless accusations’ had ‘upset’ staff, I was happy to write and apologise. Those letters are among my documentation as well. Along with the documents detailing the lies that would then be told about me in Court, the gloating notes regarding which members of staff I ‘trusted’ and who could therefore be relied upon to persuade me or even people close to me to drop complaints about the ‘service’. I have seen the medical records of another mental health patient from north Wales who, like me, was repeatedly arrested after complaining about the ‘services’. He too wrote apologies to staff whom he was told were ‘terrified’ of him and whom he had ‘upset’. His letters of apology were attached to fabricated accounts of his ‘crimes’, giving the impression that he was apologising for committing serious offences. This man told me that one of his letters of apology was ‘virtually dictated’ to him by Dr Tony Francis.

Get over it world, these were not caring Top Docs and Angels who’s patience was being tried to the limits by dangerous patients, they were a criminal gang. Those in Gov’t throughout the many years that this criminal idiocy continued knew that.

Evil Myra died in November 2002, having never been paroled. Lord Longford had died the previous year.

Longford seemed to be very confused where homosexuality was concerned. In 1956, he launched the first Parliamentary debate in support of the Wolfenden Report, which recommended the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Longford had been a staunch public supporter of Lord Montagu and his lover Peter Wildeblood after the two were jailed for breaking anti-gay laws in the early 1950s and he visited them regularly in prison. In his later years however, Longford became a staunch opponent of gay rights and in the 1960s he stated that homosexuality was ‘nauseating’ and that, regardless of any change in the law, it was ‘utterly wrongful’.

But then Dafydd and Gwynne at the North Wales Hospital Denbigh were subjecting gay patients to ‘aversion therapy’ to cure them of their homosexuality years after homosexuality was decriminalised, while they ran a paedophile/trafficking ring targeting boys in particular.

In the mid-1980s, Longford was a vocal supporter of the introduction of Section 28 by Thatcher’s Conservative Gov’t – despite Thatcher’s close friends Sir Peter Morrison and George Thomas being homosexual paedophiles –  and, during the Parliamentary debates, Longford famously stated his opinion that homosexuals are ‘handicapped people’. Section 28 became law in 1988, but Longford continued to support it and fought against its repeal when New Labour came to power in 1997. Section 28 was repealed in 2003.

Longford also opposed the Labour Gov’ts plans to equalise the age of consent for gay men (at that time 18) with that of heterosexual men (16), and in a 1998 Lords debate Longford remarked that:

…if someone seduced my daughter, it would be damaging and horrifying but not fatal. She would recover, marry and have lots of children… On the other hand, if some elderly, or not so elderly, schoolmaster seduced one of my sons and taught him to be a homosexual, he would ruin him for life. That is the fundamental distinction.

Is it any wonder that with this sort of inconsistency and confusion, Longford colluded with the crimes of Dafydd et al?

The age of consent for gay men was equalised at 16 in 2000. In the years before that, there were TV debates regarding the matter. The subject was discussed on daytime shows such as ‘Kilroy’. I was watching those shows in the mid-1990s because Dafydd was regularly turning up on them being touted as an ‘expert’. I saw the ‘Kilroy’ programme which discussed reducing the age of consent for homosexuality and it was bizarre. A collection of the truly bigoted had been invited including one Top Doctor – not Dafydd amazingly enough – who reassured Kilroy and the assembled company that homosexuality was a ‘mental illness’ and was not found in the animal kingdom (it is). There was one Tory MP who argued against reducing the age of consent – a young Nigel Evans, the Tory MP for the Ribble Valley, who grew up in Swansea. Years later Nigel Evans came out as gay and then famously stood trial in 2014 after a number of young men alleged that he had sexually assaulted them.

There was only one guest on the ‘Kilroy’ programme who dared support the reduction of the age of consent for gays to 16 and who faced the most dreadful hostility for doing so and that was Edwina Currie. I was so impressed with Edwina’s performance on the show that I wrote to her. I received a letter back from Edwina so quickly that I have never worked out how it happened. I posted the letter to Edwina at her Commons address from Bethesda and I received a reply as far as I can remember the next day. It was a complete mystery to me as to how that could have happened. I am now even more intrigued because I now know that when I was living at that address at that time I and my friends were under surveillance by the security services because of our challenges to and interest in Dafydd and the gang.

When that episode of ‘Kilroy’ was screened, Edwina, Nigel Evans and indeed Kilroy himself knew about at least some of Dafydd’s criminal activities in relation to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal, which was in the news at the time.

Longford’s highly publicised condemnation of homosexuality in the late 1980s made him a regular target of the comedian Julian Clary, who often satirised Longford. When Julian Clary was much younger and a new face on the comedy circuit, he used to joke about the homosexual bullying which he maintained was endemic at his school. In one media interview he described his school as a living nightmare but stated that he felt unable to tell his parents what was happening to him because it was a prestigious school and they’d made sacrifices to send him there. More recently that school has been named as being part of a child abuse ring. Julian Clary has now gone very quiet about that school and after it was named in the media simply observed that he didn’t like it there very much. Clary’s mum was a probation officer and his dad was a policeman.

Frank Pakenham’s extended family are as interesting as he was. His elder brother Edward, from whom Frank inherited his earldom, was the 6th Earl Longford. Edward went to Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. At Eton he became an Irish Nationalist, taking inspiration from the Easter Rising in 1916 and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Edward learned Irish and adopted the name Eamon de Longphort. His political views made him unpopular at both Eton and Christ Church. Edward was an Anglo-Catholic who never left the Church of Ireland.

On 13 November 1946 Edward was nominated by the Taoiseach, Eamon de Valera, as a member of 5th Seanad Eireann, although he was not re-appointed to the 6th Seanad.

Lord Edward Longford became Chairman of the Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1930 and continued to work for the theatre until 1936, when he founded the Longford Players. He often collaborated with his wife, Christine, with whom he was also responsible for redecorating Pakenham Hall, now Tullynally Castle, in Chinese style. Pakenham Hall was often the scene of gatherings of Oxford-educated intellectuals such as John Betjeman, Evelyn Waugh and Maurice Bowra.

Frank and Edward’s dad Thomas Packenham, 5th Earl of Longford and his wife Lady Mary, had other children including Lady Julia, later Lady Julia Mount. Lady Julia Mount was the mother of Sir Ferdinand Mount, one of Thatcher’s favourite ‘thinkers’. Ferdinand Mount attended Eton and then Christ Church, Oxford. Mount worked at Conservative Party HQ as Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit, 1982–83, under Thatch and played a significant part in devising the 1983 General Election manifesto.

Mount was Editor of the TLS, 1991–2002 and then became a regular contributor to ‘Standpoint’ magazine. He wrote for ‘The Sunday Times’ and in 2005 joined The Daily Torygraph as a commentator. Sir Ferdinand serves as Chairman of the Friends of the British Library and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1991.

Ferdinand’s books include: ‘The Subversive Family: An Alternative History of Love and Marriage’ (1982); ‘Umbrella: A Pacific Tale’ (199); and ‘The Liquidator’ (1995).

The ‘Daily Mail’ coverage of Frank Longford’s death told us that Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the Archbishop of Westminster, paid tribute to Lord Longford’s loyalty to his faith: ‘I remember Lord Longford as a great friend and a man not afraid to be different. He was an outstanding Christian witness who devoted his entire life to the Catholic faith…’ Tony Benn, who served in Harold Wilson’s Gov’t with Lord Longford, 1964-68, remembered the peer as a ‘kindly and thoughtful’ man who served the nation for many decades: ‘He had a very long and distinguished career as a Catholic socialist statesman and a minister. His concern for people, and for prisoners in particular, was genuine. He simply did not believe that people should be allowed to rot in jail….He was a very kind and thoughtful man. I think he will be remembered as a very respected and well thought of man with a great conscience. He was just a very decent guy’. Juliet Lyon, Director of the Prison Reform Trust, said Lord Longford was a ‘remarkable’ man who was not afraid to stand up for his beliefs: ‘Lord Longford had a rare belief in humanity and a determination to stand up for people who could not stand up for themselves. Essentially, he refused to see people who had done terrible things as terrible people.’ Frances Crook, Director of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said she would miss Lord Longford both professionally and personally: ‘Firstly, he was one of the bravest people I have ever met because he would stand up and challenge what everybody else was saying. Secondly, he was compassionate and reminded people that nobody is beyond redemption. And thirdly he was also a wonderful lunch companion and could drink anyone under the table’.

Tony Blair said of Lord Longford after his death: ‘He was a great man of passionate integrity and humanity, and a great reformer committed to modernising the law, while also caring deeply for individuals’.

Longford had a big family and many of his children – Harriet Harman’s cousins – became well-known/influential or married well-known/influential people.

Lady Antonia Fraser is probably the most famous of Longford’s children. From 1956 until 1977, Antonia was married to Sir Hugh Fraser, the Roman Catholic Conservative Unionist MP for Stafford, who was a friend of the American Kennedy family. They had six children: three sons, Benjamin, Damian and Orlando; and three daughters, Rebecca Fitzgerald, wife of barrister Edward Fitzgerald QC, Flora Fraser and Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni. Edward Fitzgerald QC is joint Head of Doughty Street Chambers. Doughty Street Chambers contains Theo Huckle QC, the former Counsel-General of Wales, who had sight of the 10,000 documents in my possession detailing serious crime on the part of every agency with which I was involved over 25 years but did not act (see post ‘Theo Huckle QC’). Another leading light at Doughty Street Chambers is Helena Kennedy, who during her many years of working with Wimmin In Prison and Secure Hospitals has never uttered a word regarding the organised abuse of people in care settings (see post ‘Close Your Eyes And Make A WISH’), not even when she worked with Professor Nigel Eastman of St George’s Hospital Medical School, who was concealing the crimes of Dafydd, Oliver Brooke et al (see post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’).

Flora Fraser married Peter Soros, nephew of George Soros. Benjamin Fraser works for JP Morgan, Damian Fraser is the Managing Director of the investment banking firm UBS AG (formerly S.G. Warburg) in Mexico and Orlando Fraser is a barrister specialising in commercial law.

Lady Antonia’s husband Hugh Fraser was a younger son of the 14th Lord Lovat. He was educated at Ampleforth College – now the focus of a major abuse investigation – and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford Union. He also attended the Sorbonne. Fraser was elected MP for Stone in 1945, which later became Stafford and Stone from 1950 until 1983 and then Stafford until his death. He served as an MP continuously from 1945 until 1984.

A paedophile ring operated in the Stafford area for many years and the abuse of children in care in that location finally became public in the 1980s as a result of the Pindown Scandal (see previous posts). At least one foster carer who had raised concerns about children in care in the Stafford area being abused by social work staff found himself arrested and framed for child abuse himself. Fraser had been a member of Harold Macmillans Gov’t at the time of the Profumo Affair (see post ‘In Memoriam – Bronwen, Lady Astor’).

Hugh Fraser was the presumed target of an IRA car bomb on 23 October 1975. The bomb had been fitted to one of Fraser’s cars outside his home at Holland Park. A noted cancer researcher, Professor Gordon Hamilton Fairley, a neighbour of the Frasers, was walking past the car when the bomb exploded prematurely, killing him instantly. Fraser’s wife, Lady Antonia, and Caroline Kennedy – the daughter of John F. Kennedy – who was a guest of the Frasers and visiting London to complete an art course at Sotheby’s, would have been in the car when the bomb detonated had it not done so prematurely.

An article about the bomb blast was published in ‘The New York Times’, Oct 24 1974. It stated that ‘Miss Kennedy…was described by Mr. Fraser as “very shaken”… “I am fine,” she said. “I am sure this has nothing to do with me.” Prof. Gordon Hamilton Fairley…was killed…The leukemia specialist, who lived in the square, was professor in the department of medical oncology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London…Recent work by Professor Fairley included treatment of acute myeloid leukemia… The work was performed with Prof. Peter Alexander, an expert in tumor immunology at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. “I can think of no greater catastrophe for clinical research than his loss,” said Professor Alexander….It was evident that Miss Kennedy and Mr. Fraser barely escaped serious injury. The bomb was planted under the front wheel of Mr. Fraser’s red Jaguar and exploded at 8:53. The 57‐year‐old M.P…was about to drive Miss Kennedy to her art course at Sotheby’s. He had stopped to telephone another Member of Parliament, Jonathan Aitken, when the bomb went off. “Normally I would have been in the car when this happened but I was on the telephone,” he said. “I normally leave the house between 8:15 and 8:30 each day.”…It was not immediately clear why Mr. Fraser was singled out. He is a well‐known member of the Roman Catholic community but has not taken a prominent role in the Irish question, except to condemn terrorism at various times. Mr. Fraser is also a stanch supporter of Israel.

Scotland Yard’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Ernest Bond, said: “We are convinced that Mr. Fraser was the target, not Caroline Kennedy. It is more than likely that the views Mr. Fraser has expressed from time to time against terrorism was the reason for this attack.”

Later in the day, Mr. Fraser received a standing ovation at the House of Commons and said in a voice choking with emotion: “We can all agree that every politician in this house is at risk, from whatever party – and all parties are determined to extirpate terrorism whatever the cost.”

He paid a special tribute to Professor Fairley, saying he had “probably done more for cancer research in this country than any other man.”

“It might be borne in mind by the public that this innocent victim in this case was a most distinguished man and has contributed perhaps more to the saving of human life than perhaps anyone in this House or in the whole medical profession.” Mr. Fraser said….

Tonight there was widespread reaction to Professor Fairley’s death. Dr. Nigel Kemp, honorary scientific secretary of the Cancer Research Campaign, said that the professor, who was in his mid‐forties, was virtually irreplaceable….’

In recent years, it has been suggested that some of those allegedly targeted by the IRA and other terrorist groups may have been targeted because of their involvement in child abuse and that those behind the attacks may not have always been the terrorist cells to whom the attacks were attributed. Hugh Fraser will have known about the child abuse ring in Stafford, his father-in-law Lord Longford definitely knew about it and John F. Kennedy and his associates have also been accused of involvement in some rather sordid activities. David Ormsby-Gore aka Lord Harlech met a sticky end after he served as Ambassador to the US while JFK was President, as did many members of his family. The Ormsby-Gores didn’t seem to have a habit of dying young and in suspicious circumstances until then. See post ’95 Glorious Years’ for details.

As for the innocent Top Doc who was accidentally killed when the bomb detonated ‘prematurely’ – he worked at Barts, which was also involved in the facilitating of an abuse/trafficking ring thanks to the presence of Dafydd’s mate Professor Linford Rees in that institution (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’) and the previous presence of Lady Juliet Bingley (see previous posts’). Furthermore Gordon Fairley’s colleagues at the Cancer Research Campaign were involved in large scale research fraud (see post ‘Oh Lordy, It’s CR UK’).

That bomb could have been targeting any number of people.

Sir Hugh Fraser remained in Parliament until his death in March 1984 and Bill Cash retained the seat for the Tories at the subsequent by-election.

In 1975, Lady Antonia began an affair with Top Swearer Harold Pinter, who was then married to the actress Vivien Merchant. In 1977, after Lady Antonia had been living with Pinter for two years, the Frasers’ union was legally dissolved. Merchant spoke about her distress publicly to the press, but she resisted divorcing Pinter. In 1980, after Merchant signed divorce papers, Lady Antonia and the Sweary One married.

Harold Pinter talked posh but famously originated from Hackney. He frequented leftie luvvie circles and the world was entertained when it became known back in the 1980s that Lady Antonia and Harold were planning the revolution over a series of dinner parties at their place in Holland Park. I wonder why that particular plan failed.Holland Park home | Holland Park Lifestyle | Pinterest

Citizen Smith

Swearing Harold found time for an affair with Joan Bakewell in his busy timetable.

In a review published in 1958, borrowing from the subtitle of The Lunatic View: A Comedy of Menace, a play by David Crompton, critic Irving Wardle called Pinter’s early plays ‘comedy of menace’, a label that people have applied repeatedly to Pinter’s work. Such plays begin with an apparently innocent situation that becomes both threatening and ‘absurd’ as Pinter’s characters behave in ways often perceived as inexplicable by his audiences and one another.

The Earl of Longford
Lord Longford 4 Allan Warren.jpg

Harold Pinter was a friend of Tom Stoppard, who was married to Top Doctor Miriam Stoppard of ‘Dear Miriam’ fame, before Tom ran off with Felicity Kendal and then hit gold with Sabrina Guinness, Carlo’s old flame, whom it was alleged turned down Carlo’s offer of marriage. Probably because she was older and rather sharper than Lady Di and knew what she would be letting herself in for.

I always think of Miriam as being someone who answered the readers’ problems in the ‘TV Times’ magazine – I think that they took Miriam on when they got rid of Katie Boyle – and then the ‘Daily Mirror’ and who wrote owners’ manuals for menopausal women, dispensing bad advice in the process, but there are far more sinister aspects to Miriam’s CV.

Miriam was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Her father Sidney was a nurse and her mother Jenny worked for the Newcastle school dinners service. Male nurses were a rare thing in those days, except for in psychiatric nursing, so it is probable that this was the field in which Miriam’s father was employed. Newcastle and the surrounding area was the location of the paedophile/trafficking gang which supplied Dafydd’s gang with staff and children and the psychiatric services in Newcastle were a key part of the gang (see post ‘The Newcastle-upon-Tyne Connection?’).

Miriam trained as a nurse at the Newcastle General Hospital (Royal Free Medical School) and went on to study medicine at King’s College Durham (which became Newcastle University in 1963). It is unusual for nurses to subsequently train as Top Doctors, although these days it does sometimes happen. When Miriam did that it was virtually unheard of, not least because of the dreadful attitudes that Top Docs held and often still hold toward Angels. There were only a very, very small number of examples and in every case the Angel and/or her family knew of enormous wrongdoing in high places and quietly used that as leverage.

So Miriam, how did you or your dad or one of your close friends get to know the monster of the medical establishment who was based in Newcastle, Lord John Walton, who spent his entire career concealing the crimes of Dafydd and his associates in Newcastle (see post ‘Little Things Hitting Each Other’)?

It just got better and better for Miriam. After qualifying as a Top Doc, Miriam worked at the Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and then as a senior registrar in dermatology at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Where Miriam will have got to know the Bristol contingent who propped up Dafydd’s partner-in-crime Dr D.G.E. Wood.

Miriam became Research Director and then Managing Director for Syntex, the drug company most well-known for producing the oral contraceptive pill. Syntex’s submission of a fraudulent toxicology analysis of naproxen largely led to the Food and Drug Administration’s uncovering of extensive scientific misconduct by  Industrial Bio-Test Laboratories in 1976. They never mentioned that in the ‘TV Times’ on the ‘Dear Miriam’ page.

Miriam became well known during the 1970s and 1980s as a television presenter on scientific and medical programmes such as ‘Don’t Ask Me’ and ‘Where There’s Life’.

‘Don’t Ask Me’ was a science show made by Yorkshire Television which ran from 1974 to 1978. It attempted to answer science-based questions and contributors included Magnus Pyke, Rob Buckman and David Bellamy. Those behind the scenes included Adam Hart-Davis. Buckman was one of those Top Docs who was a member of ‘Footlights’ in the late 1960s and worked with John Cleese and Graham Chapman (who had a penchant for picking up teenaged boys for sex as discussed in previous posts) and who starred in things like ‘The Pink Medicine Show’ in the 1970s.

Rob Buckman emigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1985 and initially stayed with his cousin, journalist Barbara Amiel, who was married to Conrad Black, the press baron who at one time owned the Daily Torygraph. Black went to prison for fraud in 2007. In 1994 Buckman was named Canada’s Humanist of the Year and he was President of the Humanist Association of Canada and Chair of the Advisory Board on Bioethics of the International Humanist and Ethical UnionBuckman was a founding member of the Centre for Inquiry Canada. Buckman practiced medical oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital, held a Chair in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and held an adjunct Chair at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the US state of Texas. Buckman died in his sleep while flying from London to Toronto on 9 October 2011. The cause was unknown, he was 63 and remarkably few questions were asked about that death. Buckman pegged out just as Operation Pallial re-opened the investigation into the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal and the Macur Review of the Waterhouse Inquiry approached.

Rob Buckman undoubtedly knew about much of the abuse and wrongdoing which has been discussed on this blog, but he kept quiet, which was just as well because his brother Laurence Buckman, a GP, was Chairman of the BMA’s GP’s Committee, 2007-13. Buckman was educated at University College School in Hampstead – Trumpers’ husband Alan Barker was Headmaster there. It was Trumpers who appointed Jimmy Savile to the management board of Broadmoor when she was a junior Health Minister (see post ’95 Glorious Years!’). Laurence Buckman studied medicine at UCH and is the London President of the Jewish Medical Association.

It was when Laurence Buckman was a ‘negotiator’ for the BMA that the GPs laughable contract leaving them far richer despite doing less work was ‘negotiated’. Buckman became very upset when it was alleged that it was he who had helped bag the GPs big bucks. Buckman sought to expel this notion in an interview with the ‘Jewish Chronicle’ in 2009. It was stated that ‘He is regarded as a tough negotiator at the Department of Health. It was no coincidence that he was once dubbed “Red Robbo in a white coat”, a description he did not enjoy any more than when the editor of ‘The Lancet ‘said his behaviour was “shameful” and that he was guilty of “insulting cynicism about politicians and their constituents”. To which he responds: “If you put your head above the parapet, you must expect to be shot at.”

Well Laurence, I and my friends were threatened with guns and being shot at because we dared put our heads up above the parapet when we complained about your people-trafficking colleagues. I don’t like people threatening to kill me and then trying to do it, so now you’ve got this blog. Furthermore, you’ve been somewhat rash putting your own head above the parapet and mouthing off constantly about the nation’s hard-working and modestly paid GPs and stating in that interview with the ‘Jewish Chronicle’ that ‘there are 8000 fewer people dead’ as a result of that GPs contract. You had no evidence for such a statement and one look at what has happened to general practice since you gave that interview demonstrates that you are a lying bastard.Peeling Oniontown - VICE

Laurence Buckman got his ‘first experience of NHS and Health Department bureaucracy in 1992 when he joined the BMA GPs committee’. In 1992, the Gov’t was doing all that it could to conceal Dafydd’s role in the Westminster Paedophile Ring. Dafydd’s gang included Dr D.G.E. Wood, who was a leading light in the Royal College of GPs. Buckman will know him.

So how did the turd Buckman ever find himself in a position where he was able to order about a Gov’t who loathed him?

Since Buckman gave that interview to the ‘Jewish Chronicle’ in 2009, his brother died for no good reason in an aeroplane mid-transit. Buckman must be a worried man by now.

David Bellamy, Rob Buckman’s co-presenter on ‘Don’t Ask Me’, was a botanist based at Durham University. Bellamy was friendly with one of his colleagues who lectured at Durham who was the mother of a particularly dreadful forestry student at Bangor University, Louis Standen. I and my friends had the Standen Experience when he moved into our house in 1984, just as we found ourselves surrounded by so many difficult people, a number of whom I have now been told were gifts from the security services. Standen was an absolute bloody nightmare, was highly abusive, had a record of sexually aggressive behaviour towards girls before he ever arrived at Bangor and freely told us that it was his mum and her connections that secured him the place on the forestry degree at Bangor. After graduation, Louis was involved in a series of events bizarre even by his standards and years later hit the headlines when he was part of a spectacularly ineffective anti-nuclear protest while dressed as an elf or some such character. It was reported in the press that Louis was employed as David Bellamy’s chauffeur at the time. The last that I heard of Louis he was living in Glastonbury predicting the end of the world and touring festivals to dispense his wisdom regarding this matter.

Louis Standen’s parents were both involved with Radical Causes – his dad was the novelist and literary figure Michael Standen – and they hobnobbed with many of the activists previously named on this blog as having colluded with or concealed the crimes of Dafydd et al, such as Tony Benn (see post ‘No Cuts’).

Durham University was stuffed with people who knew about the organised abuse ring in the north east and its links with the gang in north Wales. Professor Eric Sunderland was appointed Principal of UCNW/Bangor University in 1984, after the paedophile gang in north Wales sent up a distress flare. Eric had spent most of his career at Durham University and proved a remarkably loyal friend to Dafydd’s gang, although Eric was heavily camouflaged (see previous posts). Eric Sunderland took up his post at Bangor the same year that Louis arrived at the University.

David Bellamy was well-known for fostering/adopting children.

Adam Hart-Davis, the behind the scenes mover and shaker for ‘Don’t Ask Me’ is linked to people who have kept quiet about research fraud, dodgy practice and abuse (see post ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’).

Miriam has a company, Miriam Stoppard Lifetime, through which she flogs her books and health products. In August 2012, writing in the Daily Mirror, Stoppard supported UCL’s Institute of Child Health research which suggested reviewing the recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding until six months, adding that the appearance of teeth should signal the end of breastfeeding. I think that Miriam should probably stop telling other women what to do, it hasn’t been that helpful…

Nevertheless, Miriam was named Journalist of the Year at the Stonewall Awards on 6 November 2012.

Miriam was married to Tom Stoppard from 1972 to 1992; one of her sons is the actor Ed Stoppard and her sister is the ‘social justice activist’ Murreil Hazel Stern, mother of the Champion Of The Oppressed Baroness Oona King (see post ‘We’ve Been Expecting You…’). Oona’s dad is the academic and African-American civil rights activist Preston Theodore King. Preston King has taught at a number of universities within and outside of the UK, including Keele University. Keele had a problem at the time that Preston King taught there, in so far as some staff were concealing organised abuse.

In 1997, as the Waterhouse Inquiry got underway, Miriam married the industrialist Sir Christopher Hogg.

Hogg began his career with Philip Hill Higginson Erlangers Ltd (now Hill Samuel & Co Ltd); from 1963–66 and then worked for Courtaulds from 1968 onwards, which at the time was Europe’s largest textile company. He became a Director in 1973, was appointed Chief Executive in 1979 and became Executive Chairman on 1 January 1980. He retired as Chief Executive in 1991.

Courtaulds owned the British Cellophane factory in Bridgwater which for many years was Bridgwater’s biggest employer. Cellophane closed down in 2005 which caused much grief in Bridgwater. People were perplexed as to why the factory had closed. By then the Cellophane factory was owned by Innovia, who decided to close one of its two plants at either Bridgwater or Tecumseh, Kansas. British economic development officials offered a $120,000 tax break over three years to Innovia to preserve the Bridgwater plant, while Kansas offered $2 million if it kept the plant at Tecumseh open. As a result, the profit-making Bridgwater factory closed in the summer of 2005, while the loss-making factory in Tecumseh remained open.

By the time that the Cellophane factory was closed, the dreadful Ian Liddell-Grainger had succeeded Tom King as the Tory MP for Bridgwater. Liddell-Grainger’s claim to fame is that he is a great-great-great grandson of Queen Victoria. Before becoming an MP, Liddell-Grainger was commissioned as a Major in the TA with the 6th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, commanding the machine-gun Platoon and then X Company of the Battalion in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Liddell-Grainger served on Tynedale District Council, 1989-95. So he knew about the trafficking gang in the north east linked to Dafydd’s gang.

Liddell-Grainger succeeded Tom King as MP in 2001, after King was given a peerage. King picked up his peerage the year after the Waterhouse Report concealed the barrel of crap in north Wales/Cheshire which King knew about and knew that some of his constituents knew about as well (see posts ‘Those Who Are Ready To Serve’ and ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’).

Christopher Hogg served as a member of the Dept of Industry’s Industrial Development Advisory Board from 1976-80. Hogg was a member of JP Morgan’s International Advisory Council, 1988-2003 and served as a Non-Executive Director of the Bank of England from March 1992 for a four-year term and as a Trustee of the Ford Foundation from 1987-99.

Hogg was appointed to the Bank of England when Robin Leigh-Pemberton was the Governor, 1983-93. My post ‘Upper Class Twit Of The Year – Shooting Themselves’ describes how from the late 1980s onward, people known to me in Somerset who remained silent about what was happening to me in north Wales found themselves in possession of a great deal of money after their company was inexplicably cultivated by a bunch of over-privileged tossers who were members of the Dangerous Sports Club. A leading light in the DSC was Robin Leigh-Pemberton’s son Tommy. Tommy Leigh-Pemberton was shot dead in Nairobi when he was doing something that he should not have been, which would have resulted in much bad publicity for his father had it been widely known, so the circumstances of Tommy’s death were concealed (see post ‘The Village’).

Lord Kingsdown’s son – Tommy’s brother – the Hon. James Henry Leigh-Pemberton is a British banker and the incumbent Receiver-General for the Duchy of Cornwall. Robin Leigh-Pemberton was the Chancellor of the Duchy of Cornwall. James currently serves as the Executive Chairman of UK Financial Investments. James Leigh-Pemberton was educated at Eton and started his career at S.G. Warburg & Co before becoming a Managing Director at Credit Suisse Investment Banking in London. On 7 July 2008, James was appointed CEO of Credit Suisse’s businesses in the UK. He currently serves as the Executive Chairman of UK Financial Investments. James Leigh-Pemberton is also a Trustee of the Duke of Cornwall Benevolent fund and The Royal Collection Trust.

Christopher Hogg joined the board of Allied Domecq in 1995 and was Chairman, 1996-March 2002. He was a Non-Executive Director of Reuters Group from 1984 and its Chairman, 1985-2004 and later served as Chairman of the Financial Reporting Council, 2006-April 2010. Hogg was a Non-Executive Director of Air Liquide, 2000–05, and of SmithKline Beecham, 1993-2000. He was a Non-Executive Director of GlaxoSmithKline from 2000, and its Chairman, 2002-04. Hogg Chaired the National Theatre, 1995-2004.

Hogg attended Marlborough College and Trinity College, Oxford. He attended IMEDE Business School (Lausanne, 1962), before going to Harvard where he completed his MBA.

Frank Pakenham’s heir, Thomas Pakenham, the 8th Earl Longford, is a journo and historian. After graduating from Belvedere College and Magdalen College, Oxford in 1955, Thomas Pakenham travelled to Ethiopia. On returning to Britain, Thomas worked on the Editorial staff of ‘The Times’ and later for ‘The Sunday Telegraph’ and ‘The Observer’. He is the Chairman of the Irish Tree Society.

Patrick Pakenham, another of Frank Pakenham’s children, was a barrister who died in 2005. Patrick had a difficult life, particularly after he developed manic depression, which resulted in him being admitted to nursing homes on three occasions and prevented him from continuing his career. Even before Patrick became ill, he seemed to have had some very bad experiences. He was ‘treated badly’ – one presumes that it must have been very badly – as an Army cadet which resulted in him having a breakdown and then in 1963 he was involved in a boating accident in which two of his friends died. In 1982 Patrick and his father set up the Help Charitable Trust and Patrick began visiting mentally ill prisoners. So like his dad, Patrick knew just how grim the prevailing situation was/is. I presume that Patrick was admitted to ‘nursing homes’ during his periods of illness because no-one was going to risk his neck in NHS long term psychiatric care. Dafydd is of course for other people…

Patrick’s sister Judith is a poet. She formerly worked for Chelsea Labour Party but left the Party in 1999. Since 2001, Judith has helped campaign for Occupied Palestine. In 1963 she married Alexander John Kazantis; then in 1998 Judith married lawyer and writer Irving Weinman, who was active in Jews4Justice4Palestines. Judith and Irving lived in the Brighton area, but then Longford’s children – or at least some of them – were brought up in East Sussex.

John Allen owned brothels in Brighton and London to which he trafficked kids in care from north Wales. The firebomb which killed five witnesses to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal in April 1992 was thrown into a building in Brighton (see post ‘The Silence Of The Welsh Lambs’).

Another of Frank Longford’s daughters is Rachel Billington. She has written plays for BBC Television’s ‘Play for Today’ series and several radio plays and has contributed to film scripts. Rachel Billington also works as a journo for newspapers in both the UK and the US and worked for three years as a columnist for ‘The Sunday Telegraph’. Rachel Billington was President of English PEN, 1998-2001 and is now Honorary Vice-President. During her time as President Billington initiated PEN’s Readers & Writers programme which sends books and writers to meet readers in schools, prisons and other institutions which lack resources. Rachel is a Trustee of the Longford Trust which was set up in memory of her father. As well as being involved with the prisoners newspaper ‘Inside Time’, she is a Trustee of ‘The Tablet’ and of the Siobhan Dowd Trust, set up to encourage reading among disadvantaged children.

Rachel is married to the film, theatre and television director Kevin Billington. Kevin was educated at Bryanston School and Queen’s College, Cambridge. He worked for the BBC as a radio producer in Leeds, 1959–60 and then for television in Manchester, 1960–61, before working on the early evening ‘Tonight’ programme and on documentaries for the BBC and ATV until 1967. Billington’s theatre work includes several productions of plays by his brother-in-law Harold Pinter. His TV work includes ‘A Time to Dance’ (BBC 1992), adapted by Melvyn Bragg from his own work of fiction.

Another of Longford’s sons, Michael Aidan Pakenham, was educated at Ampleforth and Trinity College, Cambridge. Michael was briefly a reporter for the Washington Post before joining the Foreign Office to pursue a career as a diplomat in 1965. He served in Nairobi and Warsaw before being seconded to the Cabinet Office, 1971–74 as Assistant Private Secretary and then Private Secretary, to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancashire, Geoffrey Rippon, then John Davies, who at that time had special responsibilities for the co-ordination of British policy towards the EC. Geoffrey Rippon was one of those who played a role in the unlawful arrest and imprisonment of Mary Wynch (see post ‘A Few Of The Relevant Politicians Re Mary Wynch’s Case’).

In 1974 Michael Pakenham was at the CSCE in Geneva, then was posted to New Delhi, 1974–78 and Washington DC, 1978–1983. He was Head of the Arms Control and Disarmament Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1983–87; Counsellor (External Relations) to the UK Permanent Representative to the EC, Brussels, 1987–91; Ambassador and Counsel-General to Luxembourg, 1991–94; and Minister in Paris, 1994–97.

Pakenham was then seconded to the Cabinet Office again as Deputy Secretary for Defence and Overseas Affairs 1997–99, then Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, 1997–2000 (also Intelligence Co-ordinator 1999–2000). Finally he was posted to Warsaw as Ambassador to Poland, 2001–03.

Since retiring from the Diplomatic Service, Pakenham has been Chairman of Pakenvest International; senior adviser to Access Industries; non-executive Director of the Westminster Group; a Trustee of Chevening House; and a lay member of the governing Council of King’s College, London and its Vice-Chairman since 2009.

Pakenham married Mimi Lavine (born Meta Doak) in 1980; they have two daughters. They also have two step daughters, Dr Lisa Nagy of Martha’s Vineyard and Lindsay Lavine Webster of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Longford’s daughter Catherine Pakenham was a journo who died in car crash in 1969.

There is another son, Kevin Pakenham, who is a banker.

Now for a brief news round-up:

On Saturday morning on Radio 4 an Angel from north Wales rang a phone-in programme to tell Radio 4 about her hard life as an advanced practitioner in north Wales, how the patients don’t appreciate her and how she is doing the job of a GP because of ‘the crisis’. This Angel mentioned that among her many patients, there are people with mental health problems. The Angel failed to mention that she works for a Health Board that is in special measures as a result of staff being filmed undercover seriously abusing elderly mentally ill patients and that the regional NHS has such an atrocious reputation that no GPs will relocate there, which is why the Angel has been given the responsibilities of a GP. From what the Angel said on the radio, it sounded as if she works near Wrexham. She forgot to tell Radio 4 that many of her colleagues facilitated one of the biggest paedophile rings in the UK. The journo asked the Angel what her salary was and commiserated with her being ‘low paid’. The Angel giggled and said that she didn’t want to reveal her salary on air. That will be because as an advanced practitioner the Angel be on at least £40k which is rather more than most people in Wrexham – which has one of the biggest homelessness problems in Wales – will be earning, even if they’re commuting to Chester every day in pursuit of a higher salary.

BBC News Wales Online reported that the Welsh Ambulance Service are having yet another trauma, this time regarding the number of their staff who are so stressed out that they are all off sick. I was interested to note that the rep who was angrily spinning the latest sob story demanding that the Welsh Gov’t Act Now was exactly the same man who in 2017 was brimming over with praise for the Welsh Gov’t after they had awarded the staff of the Welsh Ambulance Service a generous pay increase.

There was a very much more interesting interview on Dominic Lawson’s Sunday morning Radio 4 programme ‘Why I Changed My Mind’. Lawson interviewed the paediatrician Dr Waney Squire. Dr Squire has suffered very badly at the hands of the medical establishment because she dared to challenge the notion of ‘shaken baby syndrome’. Waney Squire’s work was thorough and based on very sound science but because she challenged her colleagues and defended parents who stood accused of murdering their children, she was investigated by the GMC and struck off. Lawson concentrated on Squire moving from a position of accepting the notion of shaken baby syndrome to believing that it did not exist. It was an interesting interview, but Lawson missed the worst aspect of Dr Squire being struck off, which was that once she was put out of action, there was not one Top Doc in the UK who dared question shaken baby syndrome and give evidence in defence of accused people protesting their innocence. So if Dafydd accuses any readers of this blog of shaking a baby and killing him/her and they are had up for murder, they will find that there is not one Top Doc in the UK who will dare speak in their defence, because if they do, that Top Doc will probably be struck off.

Dafydd is still practising.

It was reported that a ‘doctors union’, the HCSA, is demanding the resignation of Charlie Massey, the Chief Exec of the GMC, in the wake of the saga involving Dr Bawa-Garba, the junior doctor who won her appeal against being struck off after a little boy died in her care following a string of errors (see post ‘We’ve Been Expecting You…’). The HCSA is the Hospitals Consultants and Specialists Association, which represents senior doctors. It was made very clear that in the case of Dr Bawa-Garba, her patient died because there was no consultant for her to seek advice from, the consultant on call ‘not realising’ that he was on call and was therefore moonlighting at another hospital elsewhere. Dr Bawa-Garba’s nursing colleagues told the media that the hospital involved, the Leicester Royal Infirmary, had been dangerous for years because there were never consultants available from whom junior staff could seek advice.

No wonder the HCSA is after Charlie Massey’s blood – the blame for the sacrificing of Dr Bawa-Garba has been placed very firmly on them. Are any of them now going to fulfil their legal obligations and ensure that they are available for their junior staff when they are on-call?

Charlie Massey should of course resign, but not because of Dr Bawa-Garba. Charlie Massey should go because Dafydd is STILL on the medical register.

Perhaps the HCSA would like to consider the following scene from An Everyday Story Of North Wales Folk. Some years ago two people known to me set up a community charity and one of the other people involved in the charity was a Top Doctor, a paediatrician from Ysbyty Gwynedd. The two people whom I knew became increasingly worried about this paediatrician as it became clear that he was a serial liar and seemed very exploitative towards vulnerable people. One evening he was at a meeting with others from the charity to discuss matters relating to the charity and his bleeper went off. The others at the meeting said ‘ooh do you need to go?’ The paediatrician said ‘no its OK, I’m on call but I’ll just switch this off and ignore it or I’ll be disturbed all evening’. He was as good as his word. He switched his bleeper off and did not bother to even find out who was trying to get hold of him or why. He was the consultant on call that night.

The paediatrics dept at Ysbyty Gwynedd was known to be so unsafe that local Top Doctors had an agreement that if their own children were taken ill, they would not be admitted to Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Would the HCSA like to let us know whether they would be happy for their kids to be treated by Dr Ali Bates of Tregarth, who could not be arsed to answer his bleep when he was on call? Ali Bates switched that bleep off because he had better things to do back in about 2003. If anyone was harmed or died as a result, Ysbyty Gwynedd will have lied, in the way that they lied after all the other patients had suffered at the hands of their dangerous, negligent staff and the Welsh Gov’t will have backed them up all the way.

Keep screaming and stamping your feet Top Docs, just keep it up. I worked at Hammersmith and St George’s and lived in north Wales for decades. I have many more anecdotes that I have not yet blogged about and I’ve only touched the surface of my 10,000 documents so far on this blog…

The other news item that caused a stir recently was the report that Vince Cable was going to put the Lib Dems on a firm footing and would then resign as Leader. Only the next day Vince stated that he would not be resigning after all.

The Discovery Of A Whole New Galaxy…

Thanks to my correspondent Lydia for bringing my attention to yet another leading light in psychiatry in Wales – Kenneth Rawnsley, who was Professor of Psychological Medicine at Cardiff, 1964-85. Not only did Prof Ken know all about Dr Dafydd Alun Jones and the paedophiles, but he was the man who gave Dafydd’s therapeutic community in the cellar of the North Wales Hospital Denbigh the official stamp of approval and who reassured everyone that standards at Denbigh were fine. Ken did this whilst all those folk who had dared challenge the paedophiles and their friends were illegally imprisoned in Denbigh and whilst the elderly lady Mary was still locked inside that place for no other reason than 60 years previously she had given birth without being married (see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’). Ken also taught Tony Francis (Dr X) and was the ultimate boss of the team that Francis worked in when Francis worked in Cardiff. Ken was President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, 1981-84.

Rawnsley was born in Halifax, went to Burnley Grammar School and then Manchester University where he qualified in 1948. He worked as a house physician to Robert – later Lord – Platt (see post ‘The Creme de la Creme’) in 1949 at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The Royal College of Physicians website’s section on ‘Lives of the Fellows’ tells us that there was a ‘galaxy of gifted young men’ –  yet another galaxy of Top Doctors – working under Platt at the time, one of whom was Douglas Black. Black  later became President of the Royal College of Physicians, 1977-83 and authored the Black Report on inequalities which pissed Thatcher off so much. Although Platt’s first wife Muriel had been a psychiatrist, Platt tried to persuade Rawnsley not to go into psychiatry because it simply wasn’t considered an option for capable people.

Rawnsley nonetheless pursued psychiatric training at Manchester’s Academic Dept of Psychiatry under Professor Edward Anderson. Anderson had spent the early part of his career in Germany and was influenced by Kurt Schneider and Karl Jaspers. Anderson been taught in the tradition of European psychological phenomenology and as well as in the psychology of Adolf Meyer. He had also worked as a consultant at the Maudsley.

Others who worked in Anderson’s team whom Rawnsley knew included: William Trethowan who was at that time a lecturer; Jack Kenna, a lecturer in clinical psychology; May Irvine, a lecturer in psychiatric social work; Lawton Tonge, a registrar.

William Trethowan became a very senior figure in psychiatry. His father had been an orthopaedic surgeon at Guys and died when Trethowan was 16. After his father’s death, Trethowan’s mother enrolled as  medical student – Trethowan and his mother graduated on the same day.

Trethowan went to Oundle School and then Clare College, Cambridge. At Cambridge he was musical director of Footlights. Trethowan graduated from Guys in 1943 and married the actress Pam Waters. After service in the RAMC, he worked as  psychiatric registrar at the Maudsley, 1948-50. Trethowan then spent a year as a psychiatric resident in Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard and spent the years 1951-56 as a lecturer and then senior lecturer at Manchester University, where Rawnsley got to know him. Trethowan was appointed Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney in 1956. In 1962 he returned to the UK as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham after being head hunted, where he remained until he retired in 1982. Trethowan spent 8 years as the Dean of Medicine at Birmingham. Whilst at Birmingham Trethowan was a colleague of Robert Bluglass who concealed the criminality of the north Wales mental health services in 1988, more of which later on in this post.

Trethowan was an advisor in psychiatry to the DHSS, 1964-78 and Chaired the Standing Mental Health Advisory Committee, 1968-74. He Chaired the Advisory Committee which was set up to establish the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1976-86.

Trethowan’s  obituary stated that he did much to improve standards in psychiatry and ‘worked both in committee and behind the scenes to ensure that the new college [Royal College of Psychiatrists] would reach the highest standards of professional excellence’. Just how successful Trethowan was in this we shall soon see. Trethowan was the first Chief Examiner of the Royal College and ‘almost single-handedly’ set up the exam for membership.

Trethowan was a member of the GMC and for a while its Treasurer. Trethowan was a member of the GMC panel who in 1970 allowed the paedophile child psychiatrist Dr Morris Fraser to continue to practice. Fraser was later convicted of child sexual abuse. The GMC legal officer for the case was Sir Patrick Mayhew, who years later in his capacity as Attorney General authorised two prosecutions against me for contempt of court on the basis of the perjury of members of staff employed by the north Wales mental health services.

Mayhew was Secretary of State for N Ireland, 1992-97. He was appointed days before that petrol bomb killed five witnesses to the North Wales Child Abuse Scandal (see post ‘The Silence of the Welsh Lambs’). Whilst in post, Mayhew was one of many who concealed the abuse scandal at the Kincora Boys Home in Belfast, which was said to involve members of the British Army as well as Whitehall figures. Morris Fraser was involved with Kincora.

In the 1970s Jack Kenna who was then based at Gaskell House at Manchester Royal Infirmary worked with psychiatrist Professor David Goldberg at Withington Hospital on gender reassignment. They only treated a very small number of people and were consistent with most of their peers in viewing gender reassignment cases as rare interesting specimens.

William Lawton Tonge was a psychiatrist who graduated from Manchester University in 1948. He worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Holloway Sanatorium and then was appointed registrar to the dept of psychiatry at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1951. Tonge worked at the MRC Unit for Research into Social Psychiatry and was then appointed consultant psychiatrist at Sheffield Royal Infirmary.

Tonge was Deputy Medical Superintendent of the private Cheadle Royal Hospital near Manchester and a member of the Society for the Study of Addiction.

Tonge carried out a lot of work on ‘problem families’ in which he sought to identify a common psychological maladjustment in such families whose principal problem was poverty.

There is a Lawton Tonge House in Sheffield which houses Sheffield MIND – but then MIND named one of their buildings William Bingley House.

Rawnsley remembered Anderson’s ‘deep rooted humanity and compassion’. Yet in an interview with Brian Barraclough published in the Psychiatric Bulletin in 1988, Rawnsley clearly stated that although Anderson was interested in phenomenological formulation and diagnosis, ‘treatment was not high on the agenda’ – indeed that Anderson was  a ‘therapeutic nihilist’. Anderson had been appointed as the first Professor of Psychiatry at Manchester in 1949, when Manchester was a ‘psychiatric wilderness’. By 1951 Anderson was using ECT, leucotomy, insulin coma and modified insulin therapy, but he had no ‘modern psychotropic drugs’. Rawnsley stated that in Anderson’s dept the only ‘psychotherapy in vogue was supportive therapy…valuable in the management of chronic personality problems’.

The notion of ‘chronic personality problems’ is a favourite one of particularly abusive Top Doctors. Dafydd, Tony Francis, Neil Davies and Tony Roberts found their clinics heaving with patients with chronic personality problems, as I’m sure did those concealing their wrongdoing at St George’s Hospital Medical School and Springfield Hospital. These were the patients who had dared question them or even complain who then found themselves threatened, abused and finally refused treatment. Some of these patients had no problems in their relationships with the rest of the world and some managed to have successful careers and families. The only people with whom they had problems were the Top Doctors and they were therefore deemed to have chronic personality problems.

It is clear from Rawnsley’s interview with Barraclough that Anderson and indeed Rawnsley himself did not view patients as people to be helped. They were there to be experimented upon by these men of science – who were not actually accepted as being men of science in any way by other men of science like Robert Platt. Rawnsley mentions that there was no hospital attached to the Academic Unit at Manchester, just a small number of beds – where the patients were shocked and lobotomised and put into comas. Anderson et al had some beds at the private Cheadle Royal Hospital and I suspect that was where the psychotherapy for those with chronic personality problems took place. God help you if you were one of the NHS patients, it was medical experiments and psychosurgery for you.

Anderson and Rawnsley gave some patients LSD ‘not because we thought it would do them any good but we wanted to see whether a schizophrenic patient could distinguish between the disturbances produced by LSD and the endogenous disturbance’.  Anderson and Rawnsley published the results, although Rawnsley admitted to Barraclough that giving patients LSD was   ‘on reflection’ ‘not a good thing to do’. I very much doubt that he ever fessed that up to the patients whom he’d dosed.

Rawnsley and Anderson took LSD themselves – it was very new, having only been synthesized by Hofman in 1943 – because ‘it sounded interesting’. Others in their dept took it as well, including Bob Mowbray a clinical psychologist, Dr Paul Scott and the departmental secretary Doris Bee. Not that this was a problem – there was huge interest in LSD at the time, no-one had ever come across anything like it and of course curious people would have given it a go, I certainly would have. What interests me is that Rawnsley and co all described stereotypical acid trips which then ended very badly and decided ‘never again’ – Brian Barraclough also admitted to trying LSD but concluding that it was dangerous – but Rawnsley and Anderson then gave it to patients regardless to see what would happen. Rawnsley was not a man bothered by self doubt – if he had decided ‘on reflection’ that giving patients LSD had not been a good idea, it was probably because he’d done them great damage.

Rawnsley also took mescaline and was in contact with Dr Joel Elkes. Joel Elkes ran a unit Birmingham University in which he experimented extensively with LSD. The treatment unit was established in 1958 at Potwick Hospital in Worcestershire. Over the next 10 years more than 15,000 doses of LSD were given to some 900 patients. Joel Elkes was involved in the CIA ‘mind control’ experiments with US doctors such as Lauretta Bender. Bender was responsible for some serious atrocities such as subjecting children as young as five and six to LSD experiments and ECT without anaesthetic or muscle relaxants which resulted in fractured vertebrae. One child who was the subject of the CIA experiments lived to tale the tale and qualified as an attorney when she was an adult. She tried to publish an account of what had been done to her and was told by the CIA that her career would be ended if she did. She later published under a pseudonym. Elkes also had links to the Pentagon as well as to MI6. It has been alleged that Potwick was partly funded by the CIA, MI6 and the Macy Foundation – somehow Elkes raised $75,000 over ten years to help run it. Elke’s Birmingham University unit was founded with a $84,000 Rockefeller grant and the local Health Authority paid for its upkeep and running costs. Years later there were a number of successful court cases against Potwick Hospital brought by patients who had been the subjects of experimentation. In 1968 Potwick Hospital was the star of a World In Action investigative documentary revealing appalling abuse and neglect of elderly patients. The scandal led to Potwick being the first institution to be selected for closure under the community care programme – the last patients were discharged from Potwick in 1989.

Kenneth Rawnsley left the Manchester University dept in 1953 and Anderson left in 1965. Anderson moved to Sussex and became a Lord Chancellor’s visitor.

In 1954 Rawnsley went to work at the Maudsley, where he joined Dr Denis Leigh in the Psychotherapy Unit. It might have been a psychotherapy unit but on his first day Rawnsley was sent by Leigh to a mortuary in the East End of London to collect the brain of one of Leigh’s patients whom Leigh had heard had died. Rawnsley was dispatched with a biscuit tin in which to transport the brain and ended up having a ‘tussle with the pathologist’ who did not want to hand it over. Rawnsley won the fight over the brain and it was taken to the Maudsley by Rawnsley via a tram journey, obviously without the knowledge of the relatives of the person whose brain it was.

Denis Leigh went to Hulme Grammar School and qualified at Manchester University in 1939. He then worked as  a house surgeon to Geoffrey Jefferson, a leading neurosurgeon. During World War II Leigh was a regimental medical officer after which he specialised in neurology. Leigh worked at the Oxford Head Injury Centre and also worked as an advisor in neurology in the Eastern Army in India. Leigh retained his links to the British Army and was an honorary consultant to the Army until 1980.

After demobilisation Leigh worked in the neurology dept of the London Hospital with Lord Brain and George Redditch.

Leigh then spent 18 months as a registrar at the Maudsley where he trained with Eric Huffman and C. P. Blacker. Carl Blacker was involved in a bizarre plan to inseminate a patient with the sperm of King George VI – see post ‘The King’s Sperm’. Leigh followed that up with one year at Harvard as a Clinical Fellow.

Leigh did not have a qualification in psychiatry, he called himself a consultant physician and always wore a white coat at work.

In 1948 Leigh became a consultant at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals. He was a Governor of the Maudsley and Chair of the Medical Committee there.

Denis Leigh was yet another person with an interest in psychosomatic medicine and he published with Ted Marley on psychosomatic aspects of bronchial asthma. Leigh also translated a volume concerning psychosomatic methods in painless childbirth. If one has the sort of asthma or birth that can be managed by psychological efforts this sort of work is very helpful but I suspect that if one didn’t Dr Leigh would resort to shouting accusations about malingering.

Leigh was also constructed as a forensic and medico-legal expert. He ran a big Harley Street pratice and worked as an expert witness in personal injury claims before the civil courts until just before he died in 1988.

Denis Leigh was someone who as an ‘independent psychiatrist’ assessed accused prisoners in the late 1950s/early 1960s and one of those assessed by Leigh was Guentha Podola in 1959. Podola was accused of murdering a policeman. Not only did Podola maintain that  he suffered from amnesia and had no memory of the alleged murder, but there were allegations that the policeman had assaulted Podola. Leigh gave evidence that Podola was feigning amnesia and Podola was hung.

Denis Leigh also gave evidence for the prosecution in the Lady Chatterley’s Lover trial, but the failure of that prosecution was blamed on the mad old barrister Mervyn Griffiths-Jones rather than the mad old expert witness.

Leigh gave evidence in support of the civil case brought by IRA suspect Sean McKenna. In 1971 McKenna was one of the ‘hooded men’ who was interned and tortured by the RUC Special Branch under the instructions of the British Army as part  of Operation Demetrius. Lord Carrington, the Secretary of State for Defence in Heath’s Gov’t, knew about the torture of IRA suspects and supported it, just as he and others knew about the abuse of children in the Kincora Boys Home in Belfast by Whitehall figures and members of the British Army and concealed it.

Sean McKenna brought a civil claim and in 1975 at he request of the Crown Solicitors Leigh examined McKenna. Leigh agreed that at the time of his torture McKenna had a pre-existing heart condition which was known about and that McKenna’s torture at the hands of the RUC had caused him serious damage. McKenna died days after being examined by Leigh. The Pat Finucane Centre holds documents relating to this case and there is the letter that Leigh wrote to an S. Noel Rea Esq at the Chief Counsel’s Office at the Royal Courts of Justice (Ulster). Leigh mentions that McKenna died days after he examined him and that how fortunate it was for Leigh that McKenna hadn’t died just a couple of days previously within hours of Leigh having seen him.

In 2015 The Irish Times carried a news article stating that the human rights lawyer Amal Clooney was part of a team led by Ben Emerson QC who were hoping to re-open the case of McKenna and the other hooded men. Amal Clooney works at Doughty Street Chambers, as does Helena Kennedy.

Kennedy has used the services of Professor Nigel Eastman at St George’s Hospital Medical School for many of her cases and she acknowledges him in one of her books (see post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’). Eastman was one of those who was faced with evidence of Dafydd’s criminality in 1991 but who remained silent. Kennedy was involved with the charity WISH (Women In Special Hospitals) and undoubtedly knew that some of the women in those places had been abused as children in care and whilst in the mental health system but did not say a word, even when Jimmy Savile was put in charge of Broadmoor. Kennedy was also involved with the case of Emma Humphreys who died shortly after being released from prison on appeal when represented by Kennedy. Emma died in inexplicable circumstances about which Kennedy has also remained quiet.

Theodore Huckle also works at Doughty Street. Whilst Theo was Counsel General for Wales he was given access to all the documents now in my posession which contain written evidence of serious criminal activities on the part of Top Doctors, Angels, NHS managers, the social services, probation officers, police officers, lawyers, judges, the Mental Health Act Commission and others. Theo made no comment about any of it and stated that there was no evidence that I had ever been treated negligently (see post ‘Theo Huckle QC’).

Ben Emerson QC is one of the barristers who resigned from IICSA (the Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse) after allegations of unacceptable conduct were made against him.

The National Archives also holds a report compiled by Denis Leigh which is embargoed for decades to come – there is no indication as to what this report is about.

It is highly likely that as well as knowing Dafydd from the Maudsley that Denis Leigh knew the neurosurgeon Sir Charles Evans, who later became Principal of UCNW (Bangor University). Evans trained in neurosurgery at Oxford and neurosurgery is a small and exclusive business. Evans was just three years younger than Leigh. When Evans ran UCNW he employed the paedophiles’ friends as social work and clinical psychology tutors, used the services of Gwynne the lobotomist and the corrupt GP David Wood in the Student Health Centre and allowed Dafydd to dictate what went on in the psychology dept (see ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Sir Charles Evans was a member of the team which conquered Everest in 1953 – the leader of the team was John Hunt. John Hunt spent his career in Military Intelligence and wrote the Hunt Report as  result of his advisory work on policing in N Ireland. The Hunt Report recommended the creation of a military reserve – the result was the UDR which was infiltrated by paramilitaries who accessed weapons to murder Catholics.

Volunteers for the UDR were vetted by British Army Intelligence and the RUC Special Branch. The security services will have known which UDR volunteers were murderers, in exactly the same way that they knew that Jimmy Savile was a paedophile, as was Sir Peter Morrison and that Dafydd and co were running a paedophile gang. It has been acknowledged that there was a policy to kill members of the IRA anyway and no doubt Dafydd and his atrocities were concealed on the basis of a Lord Denning argument – that this is so bad we must not admit that it’s going on. Which is not a sensible approach to take towards someone like Dafydd, it wasn’t as if he was going to stop running a crime empire or go away.

That will be how Dafydd was propped up by the Army and the security services.

Leigh was Secretary General of the World Psychiatric Association, 1966-78 and opposed many of his colleagues in arguing against the expulsion of the Soviet Union from the WPA on the grounds of political dissidents in the USSR being held in mental hospitals.

One of Leigh’s colleagues remembered that Leigh’ s guiding principal was that ‘ethics must guide all we do in psychiatry’. Denis’s Royal College of Psychiatrists obituary – written by a Peter Noble – stated that it would be for ‘his warmth and kindness as a doctor and teacher that he will be most fondly remembered’.

Denis had a son, Nigel, who inherited Denis’s propensity to be  a Top Doctor. Professor Nigel Leigh is the Professor of Neurology at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Nigel studied medicine at the London Hospital and subsequently worked at the institutions who for years did a fine job of concealing the wrongdoing of Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends – Southampton University Medical School, St George’s and the Atkinson Morley. In 1989 Nigel Leigh bagged the Chair in Clinical Neurology at the Institute of Psychiatry. He was also honorary consultant at King’ s College Hospitals NHS Trust and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. In 1990 Nigel Leigh set up one of the first multi-professional clinics within the NHS for MND (motor neurone disease) offering both medical treatment and therapies on an outpatients basis.

In 2008 BBC News reported that Nigel Leigh’s team were researching the use of lithium for the treatment of MND. Nigel Leigh and Professor Steve Field the then President of the Royal College of General Practitioners stressed that lithium was very toxic, had serious side effects such as kidney damage and that patients mustn’t just try it out for themselves outside of the clinical trial.

At the Hergest Unit patients with a variety of diagnoses were liberally prescribed lithium. Yes, it was explained that lithium was toxic and therefore patients would need regular blood tests to ensure the level of lithium in their blood wasn’t reaching a dangerous level. However, the results often weren’t returned from the labs but the prescribing simply continued regardless. Furthermore the labs at Ysbyty Gwynedd were in chaos anyway, so no-one could ever have been certain what anybody’s lithium levels were. The patients were all at risk and the Top Doctors knew it.

Ted Marley was also a member of Denis Leigh’s team whilst Rawnsley worked there. I have found one reference to Ted Marley being involved with sex therapy but apart from that he left no trace behind him.

Among all the grandiose pompousing, Rawnsley observed that at the Maudsley there was a ‘feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty among many of the trainees…level of information coming out of the ‘oracles’ was not terribly high. People didn’t know what their future was going to be. And they worried about it’.

  • I have heard this again and again from people in medicine. Students in the early years of medical school imagine that the day that they qualify will mean the end of the crap, but as a friend of mine from school told me when she was in her first year as a house officer, it is just the beginning. That friend studied medicine at Cardiff. She told me that none of the students wanted to go into psychiatry after having completed their psych block and that none of them wanted placements in north Wales for anything because the stories about medical practice in north Wales – particularly Bangor- from returning students were just so grim. Junior doctors are retained on short term contracts and are entirely dependent upon the reference from their last boss for their next job. One step out of line and they are finished – they all know it. If you are a student or junior doctor and you find out that someone is shagging and killing their patients or running a paedophile ring, you just stay well away. When I worked at St George’s I noticed that the other doctors and medical students had a very low opinion of the psychiatrists at Springfield  – they were deemed to be mad and incompetent…

Rawnsley spent six months bonding with Denis Leigh and very probably Dafydd himself because Dafydd did a stint training as a ‘psychotherapist’ at the Maudsley at the knee of Dr Bob Hobson and it will have been in the late 50s or early 60s. Bob Hobson’s right hand man at the Maudsley Russell Meares has written much about borderline personality disorder and is now a leading light at the University of Sydney in Australia. What Bob Hobson and Russell Meares turned a blind eye to with regard to their two ‘trainees’ Dafydd and Tony Francis was so bad that there will be a blog post special on Hobson and Meares coming soon. You should have raised the alarm Meares and you know it. After Rawnsley spent a short time working with the silly fuckers who unleashed two quite deranged criminals onto north Wales, he moved to the Professorial Unit at the Maudsley to work with David Davies.

David Davies was the Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry/Maudsley, 1950-66. Davies went to St John’s College Oxford and then did his clinical training at Manchester, qualifying in 1936. He spent some time in the RAMC, arrived at the Maudsley in 1946 and remained there until his retirement in 1976. Davies’s obituaries described him as having been crucially involved with the fortunes of the Bethlem Royal and the Maudsley Hospitals and with the post-war development of the Institute of Psychiatry. He was a consultant at the joint hospitals from 1946. We are told that Davies turned Aubrey Lewis’s ‘vision of a centre of excellence into a reality’ and that Lewis had ‘an ideal of eclectic scholarship and insistence on high standards of patient care’.

Davies carried out work on alcoholism and in 1962 his ‘international reputation in this field was borne overnight’ when Davies published a short paper on seven alcohol addicts who all allegedly returned to normal drinking. This was a ‘revolutionary claim’ because until then it had been believed that ‘once an alcoholic always an alcoholic’. There was a snag though. Not only did subsequent research suggest that some of Davies’ s findings ‘were faulty’ but not all of his sample were alcohol dependent.

So Davies drew erroneous conclusions from a sample of seven some of whom didn’t fit the sampling criteria – thus was his international reputation established overnight. That sounds to me sufficient grounds to fail a Bachelor’s degree, rather than to establish an international reputation.

On the basis of his international reputation, Davies then set up the Alcohol Education Centre – that was for reasons unexplained ‘short lived’ – and became the President of the Society for the Study of Addiction as well as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Addiction.

When Dafydd set up CAIS in 1977 he stated that CAIS wasn’t about promoting abstinence, it was about normal drinking. I just presumed that was Dafydd’s excuse to carry on boozing – he was widely reputed to be an alcoholic – but obviously Dafydd was taking his cue from the centre of excellence and those with international reputations.

Don’t AA still say ‘once an alcoholic always an alcoholic’?

There is a telling anecdote related by Professor Norman Kreitman in his interview with David Tait published in the Psychiatric Bulletin in 1995. When Kreitman was a young man considering a career in psychiatry he wrote to Davies when Davies was the Dean at the Maudsley. Davies invited him to drop in and visit so Kreitman did. After a brief discussion Davies asked Kreitman if he’d like to meet one of the consultants. Kreitman said yes and spent an hour discussing the state of West End Theatre with him and then left. Days later Kreitman was surprised to receive a letter telling him that he’d been accepted and would be starting in two weeks.

Dafydd ‘trained’ at the Maudsley whilst Davies was Dean so presumably was subjected to a similarly gruelling selection process.

Kreitman mentioned that the Alcohol and Research Council was set up in 1982 and that the group awarding the research grants weren’t research experts. I expect that Dafydd got a grant out of them.

One of the people who Norman Kreitman worked with was Peter Sainsbury. Sainsbury’s research interest was suicide. Sainsbury worked as a registrar at the Maudsley and then worked at the Institute for Psychiatry, 1949-54. Sainsbury completed his MD in 1955 on suicide in London and in 1957 became the Director of the MRC Clinical Psychiatry Research Unit at Graylingwell Hospital, Chichester. Sainsbury noticed the high suicide rate among psychiatric patients. He became an advisor to WHO and served on MRC committees, including one on the epidemiology of drug dependency, 1967-69 and on a working party on parasuicide, 1980-82.

Sainsbury was visiting Chair at the University of Queensland in 1972. He was Chair of the Royal College’s Committee on the Political Abuse of Psychiatry, 1978-87 and he interviewed exiled dissidents. Sainsbury should have nipped up to north Wales to interview Mary Wynch, me and all the other people that his former colleague Dafydd had illegally imprisoned during those years.

Sainsbury trained at the Middlesex Hospital just before the creation of the NHS and like Ed Miliband’s Uncle Harry (see post ‘Inside Information About A Hergest Unit Death’) he remained committed to the NHS throughout his life. Sainsbury had a big passion for achitecture and gardens and he purchased a sizable piece of land and created a extensive landscaped garden and a unique house which were his pride and joy. The patients carried on kiling themselves.

The senior registrar on Davies’s team was Michael Shepherd, who ended up achieving huge international influence in psychiatry as described in my post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’.

Rawnsley had been working in Davies’s Unit for three months  when he was asked by Aubrey Lewis if he would join the MRC Unit run by Lewis. This unit was framed as a ‘social psychiatry research’ unit but this is Aubrey Lewis that we are talking about here. Lewis’s work in that Unit began by investigating what sort of work was suitable for the mentally ill and whether people with what was then called mental handicap were capable of learning and whether they could work as well. I doubt that Aubrey concerned himself with the niceties of the patients gaining fulfilment from that work, it will have been a case of ‘Work Will Set You Free’.

Aubrey’s Assistant Director of Auschwitz was Morris Carstairs. Carstairs was Professor of Psychological Medicine at Edinburgh University, 1961-73 and President of WHO, 1968-72. He was born in the Indian Raj and qualified at Edinburgh University in 1949. Carstairs was a medical officer in the RAF during World War II and in 1953 was appointed senior registrar to Aubrey Lewis at the Maudsley. In 1960 he became the head of the new MRC Unit at UCL concerned with psychiatric epidemiology. Carstairs relocated to Edinburgh in 1961 and the Unit relocated with him. In 1971 he stood down as Director of the Unit.

Between 1973-78 Carstairs was Vice-Chancellor of York University and there seems to have been much trouble on his watch. This was a time of student protests but Carstairs seemed to have handled things very badly. Such was the hostility towards him that not only was he unable to expand the University as planned but after he stepped down as VC he was unable to return to academia, which suggests that something quite cataclysmic happened but I haven’t yet found out what it was.

It seems to have been whilst Carstairs was VC that York University spawned a very extreme Conservative students society some of whose members were later alleged to have been politicians involved in child abuse, including Harvey Proctor and Michael Brown. Christine Hamilton was also at York with that crowd.

Laurie Taylor worked at York University with criminologist Stan Cohen and it was when they were at York that they carried out their work on long term prisoners. Taylor also worked with sex offenders and with John McVicar, the former bank robber who became a writer. I’m fairly sure that Taylor is friends with Dick Hobbs the criminologist whose ethnographic work involved knowing a great deal about serious organised crime. Hobbs was mates with the criminologist Jane Morgan, the wife of Kenneth Morgan, Labour Party bigwig and former Principal of Aberystwyth University whilst Aber was doing a great deal to assist the paedophile gang of north Wales including churning out crooked lawyers who advised them (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’).

Before Taylor worked at York he completed one of his degrees at Leicester University – many of whose staff knew about the abuse of kids in care in Leicestershire by the paedophile gang which included Frank Beck and Greville Janner (see post ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’).

Taylor’s first wife was Anna Coote who was an executive member of the NCCL whilst the NCCL was affiliated to PIE. Coote also worked with women who had experienced sexual abuse and domestic violence. As I keep repeating, it is not possible to do that kind of work and not find out about the wrongdoing of the Top Doctors and their associates in social work. Coote was Director of the King’s Fund, 1998-2004 and then joined the Healthcare Commission ‘to engage patients and the public’. She is now head  of social policy for the New Economics Foundation.

Laurie Taylor’s third wife was BBC radio producer Cathie Mahon, who was a Director of the IPPR, as was Taylor’s son Matthew. In 2005 Matthew Taylor was appointed head of No 10’s Policy Unit by Blair. In Oct 2016 Theresa May appointed Matthew Taylor Chair of the Review of Modern Employment, which resulted in the 2017 Taylor Review.

I am wondering whether the notorious high security Carstairs Hospital in Scotland, the scene of murders and other grisly deeds, was named after Morris Carstairs, although I haven’t found any information about that. They are probably both such an embarrassment that they have disowned each other.

Lawton Tonge was employed in the concentration camp, as were Jack Tizard, Neil O’Connor, Peter Venables and Jacqueline Grad.

Whilst Rawnsley was at Auschwitz, George Brown was recruited and John Wing arrived in 1957 as Rawnsley left.

Unlike many of these names dropped by Rawnsley, George W. Brown completed a substantial body of work. He was a psychologist who came from a very much less privileged background than most of his colleagues – his father was a lens maker and his mother was a waitress. George Brown went to UCL in the early 1950s and studied social sciences. Some years after graduation Brown began working in the MRC Unit at the Maudsley and whilst there worked on chronic schizophrenia. In the late 1960s Brown took up a post at the Social Research Unit at Bedford College, University of London and eventually became joint Director. It was here that Brown carried out the work for which he became very well known, his work on life events and depression. Brown carried out longitudinal studies and explored the lives of his patients in detail. He ran a big comparative study looking at the life events of people with depression in Islington, the Outer Hebrides, Spain and Zimbabwe, the results of which he published with Tirril Harris in 1989. So George Brown studied the life events of people with depression in Islington throughout the 70s and 80s. George Brown will have definitely known about the paedophile ring that operated in the children’s homes there.

John Wing became Professor John Wing and after his death in 2010 was inevitably described as ‘one of the greats of 20th century British and World psychiatry’. John Wing studied medicine at UCL in the 1950s as did his wife Lorna, who also became a psychiatrist and worked at the Maudsley. John Wing was Director of the MRC Unit for 25 years. Various people who also became big names in psychiatry worked for John Wing at the MRC Unit, including Dinesh Bhugra. Whilst Dinesh Bhugra was President of the Royal College he was a Patron of Mark Williams’s Oxford Mindfulness Centre, which was based on the research fraud that Mark Williams had perpetrated when he worked in Bangor with the paedophiles’ friends in the late 1980s (see post ‘The Biggest Expert Of The Lot’).

When Wing retired in 1989 the Royal College of Psychiatrists appointed him as the first Director of the College’s Research Unit.

In 1956 the Wings had a daughter, Susan. Susan was very different to other babies but she was three by the time that the Wings realised that she had autism and that was only because John Wing happened to attend a lecture on autism and recognised his daughter’s symptoms. Years later Lorna Wing would explain in interviews that they had not known what was wrong with Susan because they hadn’t had any lectures on autism at the Maudsley. These were two psychiatrists working at what they all maintained was the world’s leading psychiatric hospital in terms of research and teaching and they were clueless about their own child. They didn’t seen to have done any reading or research themselves regarding their daughter’s difficulties and they obviously weren’t offered any advice by the global leaders who surrounded them at work.

To her credit, Lorna Wing then devoted much of her time to organising support for autistic people because she found that there wasn’t any. She also developed an interest in autism – it was Lorna Wing who coined the phrase Aspergers Syndrome. However it is clear that with their own child the Wings found themselves in the same situation as their patients – faced with clueless uninterested doctors who were not going to offer any support even in the event of serious disability.

It sums up the Maudsley. I have now read numerous interviews with that merry bunch and read some of their work. They spend pages emphasising how eminent they all are, how classic their papers are and how their work transformed the landscape but the reality was that much of their research was flaky, they actually weren’t very good and no-one else in medicine took them seriously. A lot of these Top Doctors were from privileged backgrounds and what they did excel at was blaming less privileged people for their own problems. The differences in lifestyles were huge – every interview, every obituary, every light hearted anecdote is laden with references to the Top Doctors enjoyment of theatre, of opera, of fine wines, of good food and foreign travel, whereas the poverty of their seriously ill patients is taken to be a personal and moral failing. Furthermore they repeatedly ignored or colluded with professionals abusing their positions.

Lorna Wing worked on a dataset called the Camberwell Case Register with others from the Maudsley, including Judith Gould. The Camberwell Case Register collected heaps of information on all the patients using psychiatric services in south London and in 1977 Wing and Gould trawled through the data in detail. A lot of those patients will have been the victims of the paedophile ring that operated in Lambeth’s children’s homes. People at the Maudsley knew about that – particularly a social worker at the Maudsley called Tessa Jowell who had also worked as a child care officer in Lambeth.

Another person who studied at the knee of John Wing was Terry Brugha who was a researcher with the MRC Unit, then a lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry 1980-87.  Brugha then took up a post at the University of Leicester. Where at that time people in the University of Leicester were concealing the appalling abuse of Frank Beck and Greville Janner (see post ‘Radical Leicester And Some Other Free Radicals’) and the psychiatrist Dr James Earp concealed the wrongdoing of Dafydd et al (see post ‘An Expert From England’). Between 1995-97 Brugha was a senior medical officer at the Dept of Health in London – just when the Waterhouse Tribunal was organised and started. Terry Brugha is now the Professor of Psychiatry at Leicester.

Aubrey Lewis had encouraged Rawnsley to go abroad before working in Auschwitz. Rawnsley made contact with the Bureau of Applied Social Research in Columbia University, the Director of which was Charles Glock. As a result, Rawnsley ‘fell in’ with a key figure in the Millbank Memorial Fund who ‘gave advice’ to Rawnsley, after which Rawnsley  ‘worked out a deal’ with Prof Alexander Leighton, from Cornell University. As a result Rawnsley took part in epidemiological field work that Leighton was carrying out in Nova Scotia.

Whilst Rawnsley was working in the camp, Archie Cochrane, an epidemiologist working in south Wales, visited the Maudsley and offered folk at the Maudsley access to ‘his’ communities in south Wales.

Archie Cochrane is known as ‘the father of evidence-based medicine’. He went to King’s College Cambridge and qualified from UCL in 1938. Cochrane underwent analysis himself under Theodor Reik but became disillusioned with analysis. He fought in the Spanish Civil War and was a medical officer in the PoW camps in World War II after he was taken prisoner himself. Cochrane was appointed to the MRC’s pneumonococciosis unit at Llandough Hospital – which later became part of Cardiff Medical School – in 1948. He ran randomised controlled trials in Rhondda Fach and was the first person to promote the value of such trials.

In 1960 Cochrane became a Prof at the Welsh National School of Medicine and in 1969 was appointed Director of the MRC’s Epidemiological Research Unit in Cardiff. In 1971 Cochrane co-authored with Walter Holland a classic paper on the validation of medical screening procedures. In 1971 Cochrane also published a book which was very critical of NHS clinicians who fail to carry out randomised controlled trials or who did so and then ignored the results.

In 1978 Archie really caused a stir by showing a positive correlation between the prevalance of Top Doctors and mortality in younger age groups. He also demonstrated that GNP per head was the one variable which showed a strong negative association with mortality.

The Archie Cochrane Archive is held at the Archie Cochrane Library at Cardiff University. Cochrane is remembered as being a towering figure who demonstrated the importance of the fundamentals of good clinical science – yet everybody ignores what he said. Interventions are still introduced into NHS practice on the flimsiest of evidence without ever having been subjected to a randomised controlled trial – vaginal meshes anyone? – and medical researchers in the NHS and in pharmaceutical companies are past masters at ignoring the results of randomised controlled trials if the trials don’t behave themselves and produce the desired results. At present the NHS is running a number of screening programmes that are at best ineffective and at worst harmful. This is no secret, but still kits arrive through people’s letter boxes imploring older people to return samples of their turds through the post with the threat of death from bowel cancer if they fail to do this and a valiant effort is being made to frighten men into Going To The Doctors to be screened and then have benign enlarged prostates treated as though they are malignant.

One person who ignored everything that Archie Cochrane taught was Kenneth Rawnsley.

Morris Carstairs and George Brown went to south Wales to do the recce at Archie’s invitation and a contingent from the Maudsley subsequently inflicted themselves upon south Wales. Thus in 1957 a research team in Cardiff sprang up consisting of Rawnsley, Joe Loudon, Lewis Miles, Jack Ingham and Jim Robinson. All of these people remained obscure except for Joe Loudon who became a Professor at Swansea.

Aubrey Lewis was the Honorary Director of the MRC Unit in south Wales and Rawnsley became the head of the Unit. Rawnsley carried out psychiatric morbidity studies in south Wales, which compared the mental health of the mining population of the Rhonda Fach with the rural population of the Vale of Glamorgan. Rawnsley seems to gave drawn some extraordinary conclusions from these studies. Rawnsley had a ‘special interest’ in psychosomatic medicine. Such an interest can led to insightful sympathetic exploration of patients’ problems  but I don’t think that it did with Rawnsley. Instead Rawnsley observed that people in the mining communities complained a great deal about bad backs, about aches and pains and other health problems, whereas people in the Vale of Glamorgan didn’t. Thus Rawnsley concluded that the south Wales mining communities had different social attitudes to health problems that resulted in a higher rate of ‘psychiatric problems’ than among the population of the Vale of Glamorgan. It clearly had nothing to do with the poverty and poor living conditions in the Rhondda or the people being employed in one of the most dangerous industries in the UK. It was just that lot bellyaching about imagined aches and pains.

Rawnsley also showed his sensitive side in 1961 when he worked with a community of people from Tristan da Cuna who had been evacuated to Calshot near Southampton after the volcanic eruption. The Tristans were an example of an isolated community – there had been no inward migration into the community for generations, so the MRC studied them ‘from all angles’ when they arrived in England. Rawnsley later commented that the Tristans were very co-operative with his research but that was because their experiences of the other MRC researchers had been so bad. One person working for the MRC had ‘insisted on photographing them naked against a scale for their physical anthropometry – a terrible thing to do they said’.

Ken didn’t measure the Tristans naked, he studied the prevalence of ‘hysteria’ among them by comparing their hysterical symptoms with the information documented from a Norwegian study 25 years previously. Ken’s conclusion re the Tristans? They displayed ‘a powerful example of the pathogenic and pathoplastic nature of social factors in neurosis’, provided an example of a ‘grand hysterie’ and ‘it was the wives of the leaders who had a hypersensitivity to neurosis which raised the question of assortative mating of leaders with neurotic women, or whether being married to a leader is pathogenic’.

Ken might as well have measured them naked.

Ken remembered that the Tristans ‘didn’t like it at Calshot’ and they ‘went home’.

John Wing became head of the MRC Unit when Rawnsley was appointed to the first Chair of Psychological Medicine at the Welsh National School of Medicine (Cardiff Medical School) in 1964, Rawnsley being a man with a nuanced understanding of the problems of the people of south Wales particularly those bastards in the Rhondda who never stopped moaning. In 1966 Rawnsley heard no no end of their whinging when the coal tip fell on that school in Aberfan and killed loads of them.

Ken’s colleague Jack Ingham continued the work of the MRC Unit in Edinburgh with Norman Kreitman and Joe Loudon went to work in Swansea University’s Dept of Sociology and Anthropology – the Swansea University that was pretty much run by Rhodri Morgan’s family (see post ‘A Bit More Paleontology’). Lewis Miles popped up to Anglesey to carry out a prevalence study – where Miles could not have failed to have noticed the abuse of kids in care up there and the incarceration of awkward customers in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, by which time Ken’s old mate Dafydd had finished his training at the Maudsley and was doing whatever he wanted at Denbigh.

Somebody apart from Enoch Powell must have noticed what Dafydd and Gwynne the lobotomist were doing because part of Ken’s remit as Prof at Cardiff was to improve psychiatric services across Wales. Ken felt ‘greatly supported at all times by the psychiatric community in Wales’ so Ken’s demands were obviously not too onerous.

The Welsh Hospital Board – which ran the North Wales Hospital whilst Dafydd and Gwynne lobotomised, shocked, incarcerated and shagged within its walls – appointed Ken as an advisor in psychiatry for Wales. This involved Ken having extensive discussions with the Welsh Hospital Board regarding the planning of psychiatric services for Wales. So there was actually a plan behind what Dafydd and Gwynne were doing…

The official story of Ken’s time as Professor at Cardiff was that he ‘established a vigorous and widely based academic unit closely integrated with the psychiatric services of South Glamorgan, with a special teaching and research unit at Whitchurch Mental Hospital. This last link enabled him to inject new strength into the scientific investigation which had flourished there since the early years of its history as an asylum’.

We are told that Ken ‘showed imaginative foresight in the integration of clinical practice, teaching and research, in the main hospital and local mental hospital’.

Whitchutch Hospital had a terrible reputation until it’s closure in 2016. Pre-Ken it had  been the domain of Linford Rees and his porn pics and Welsh cakes (see post ‘A Galaxy of Talent’). Whitchurch’s claim to fame was as the institution administering the highest rate of ECT in Europe. Tony Francis (Dr X) trained at Ken’s glorious dept in Cardiff and Chris Hunter – whom Francis enlisted in his attempts to bang me up in a high security unit when I didn’t even know that Chris Hunter existed (see post ‘The Night of the (Dr Chris) Hunter’) – worked at Whitchurch Hospital. My friend from the sixth form went to Cardiff to do medicine whilst Ken was Chair of that department and she told me at the time that the students all hated their psychiatry ‘block’ and after having experienced that taster none of them wanted to go into psychiatry. I remember my friend telling me that the male medical students used to be propositioned by the female patients. I wonder where the patients might have got the idea that sex between patients and staff might be a good idea from?

In 1991 Robin Jacobson of St George’s Hospital Medical School/Springfield Hospital documented that Dafydd and Tony Francis had ‘lost their boundaries’ after Dafydd told Jacobson that I was ‘attractive and seductive’ and that he and Tony Francis ‘had a soft spot for me’. Francis was trying to have me imprisoned  at the time on  the basis of the perjury of him and his wife Sadie, who also worked as a psychiatrist at Ysbyty Gwynedd and had previously worked at Denbigh.

Now here’s another mystery. Sadie worked as a clinical assistant at Denbigh. No doctor ever wants a job as a clinical assistant because it is categorised as a non-career post and one can’t gain promotion to a consultant. I’m fairly sure that this is, or at that time was, enshrined in NHS regulations. Yet after her spell as a clinical assistant at Denbigh, Sadie rocked up at Ysbyty Gwynedd as a consultant. Another clinical assistant, the disastrous Quasim Ijaz (see post ‘Update On The Inquest Of Michael Capper – And A Bit Of History’) was also given a job as a consultant psychiatrist at Ysbyty Gwynedd after working as a clinical assistant. He was given Tony Francis’s job after Francis took early retirement and the North West Wales NHS Trust advertised the vacancy three times and received no applications.

Ken was closely involved with  Royal College of Psychiatrists from its creation in 1971 – in 1972 he was elected the first Dean of the College.

Ken waxed lyrical about the establishment of the Royal College in his interview with Brian Barraclough and remembered that the London College of Physicians opposed the idea of a Royal College of Psychiatrists and wanted a Faculty of Psychiatry within the Royal College of Physicians. The Royal College of Surgeons just saw it as an irrelevance.

The Privy Council was involved with the establishment of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a key figure in the negotiations was Ben Munro, the Secretary of the Royal Medico-Psychological Association

Dr David Owen’s old mate the unhinged and lethal William Sargant (see post ‘Dr Death’) had been the Registrar of the RMPA for years and Munro had been the Secretary. Martin Cuthbert had been the last President of the RMPA, but Martin Roth was elected as the first President of the Royal College. Ken intriguingly reminded Brian Barraclough that if the officers had not been elected by the membership, Roth would never have become President.

From the beginning there had been quarrels over the membership exam and the aggro was such that one person who had been involved with the RMPA at a senior level for years resigned. There was an agreement that psychiatrists already working in the system wouldn’t have to take the Royal College’s exam – so that’ll be how Dafydd clocked up his credentials. The acquisition of the Royal College’s palatial building in Belgrave Square left the Treasurer of the Royal College concerned that the Royal College would go bankrupt.

It was Sir Martin Roth who raised the funding for 17, Belgrave Square and he raised the money from a most unlikely source  – a loan on favourable terms from Marks & Spencer (see post ‘The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Connection?’). I am mystified as to why Marks & Spencer were happy to bankroll this bunch of conmen – there will have been skulduggery somewhere. Ken mentions that Roth had to ‘go it alone’ where raising the dosh for No 17 was concerned and that Roth also held ‘the long drawn out dialogue with the Department of Health’ that was involved when the Royal College was established. Ken does not reveal what the long drawn out dialogue was about but presumably it was held with Heath’s Health Secretary, Sir Keith Joseph.

I note that the Royal College is no longer located in the Belgrave Square building with which they were so delighted but could not afford.

NHS funding from the DHSS paid for the College to inspect psychiatry training programmes in order to raise standards – so there was obviously some considerable concern in the DHSS about standards.

Ken ‘played a major role in creating the system  for inspection and approval of the quality of clinical and educational facilities in psychiatric hospitals’. So it was the system created by Ken that deemed Dafydd’s ‘therapeutic community’ in the underground chamber at Denbigh acceptable, as well as Dafydd’s training facilities which included Dafydd’s office – to which trainee female clinical psychologists from Bangor University were invited to ‘talk about psychology’. Once they had arrived Dafydd would show them ancient photos of himself and ask ‘Don’t ewe think I was handsome?’. (No Dafydd, the person who told me about this just concluded that you were nuts.)

Ken needed the regional Health Authorities to realise that their clinical standards had to be raised or junior doctors wouldn’t apply for posts – ‘there were appeals, objections and protests’. Nonetheless ‘the great majority of the hospitals were approved’. Including Denbigh. I presume that there was simply no failing Ken’s rigorous criteria.

In the early years of the College, Ken noted that peripheral hospitals feared that they would lose all their staff to academic centres. It was quite clear to me that nearly every junior doctor working in psychiatry in Ysbyty Gwynedd and Denbigh in the mid-late 1980s was just about unemployable. The situation will have been just as bad before then and because everybody – including Ken – lied about standards having been raised, standards remained dangerous and patients died. All that anybody  needed to have done was to stop Dafydd illegally imprisoning people, keeping them in  a cellar and sexually exploiting them but no-one could even do that.

Ken was President of the Royal College, 1981-84 and was elected to succeed Desmond Pond.

In his interview with Brian Barraclough, Ken tells Barraclough that during his term of office, the Mental Health Act was put forward first in the Lords and later in the Commons. Ken explained that the Gov’t – which will have been Thatcher ‘s Gov’t – set up  a special committee to evaluate and modify the Bill where required.

Ken and ‘senior officers’ from the Royal College ‘devoted much time and energy in briefing and educating Peers’. They also gave oral and written evidence before the Commons Committee and ‘succeeded in securing the elimination of the more extreme constraints on clinical freedom’. In other words Rawnsley and chums argued down the measures that concerned MPs had tried to add to the Bill in order to protect patients from the Dafydds of this world. By the time that Ken had ensured that there was bugger all protection for patients in the Bill, Mary Wynch had  begun litigation after being wrongfully arrested and imprisoned for a year by Dafydd (see post ‘The Mary Wynch Case – Details’). Rawnsley knew about this case as did the rest of the officers of the College who argued the toss with the Commons Committee. Someone else knew about the case as well – Professor Robert Bluglass, who wrote the Mental Health Act. Some six years later when appointed to investigate my own complaint, Bluglass covered for Dafydd when Dafydd had illegally had me arrested and imprisoned and completely ignored the fact that three months before Dafydd did that, Tony Francis and Jackie Brandt had unlawfully detained me at Ysbyty Gwynedd (see post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’). The person who drafted the Code of Practice to accompany the Act was William Bingley, the Legal Director of MIND who had been covering up for Dafydd for years, as had his mother Lady Juliet Bingley when she was Chair of MIND. Bingley continued colluding with and concealing Dafydd’s criminality when he later became Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission.Ken complained to Barraclough that ‘they were struggling against a powerful anti-medicine, anti-scientific prejudice in society and much loud and thoughtless clamour from civil liberties lobbies’. There was the matter of some madmen in north Wales who were unlawfully having people arrested, keeping them in a cellar, having sex with them, drugging them, running a paedophile ring and trafficking female patients into prostitution. Neither were Ken and co accepted as scientists by other branches of medicine – one only went to work for Ken or Dafydd if one’s copy book was blotted so badly that there was no hope left.

At a late stage in the Bill, a Comons member moved an amendment that certain treatments such as psychosurgery had to be subject to a second opinion from the Mental Health Act Commission even if the patient was not liable to be detained. This amendment was accepted by Ken Clarke – the Minister who had set up  the Committee to examine the Bill, under Norman Fowler the Secretary of State for Health – to the ‘amazement’ of Clarke’s advisors. Ken Rawnsley considered this to be a ‘major setback’.

So Rawnsley considered it most unreasonable that he – or indeed Dafydd – were not to be permitted to recommend a lobotomy for a patient who wasn’t considered sectionable without seeking a second opinion from their partners in crime on the Mental Health Act Commission. Ken observed to Barraclough that in Scotland there are no such restrictions on psychosurgery. There have also been some very great abuses of mental health patients in Scotland and those abuses continue today.

I’m not sure why Ken was so vexed regarding the constraints placed upon the Top Doctors – after all Dafydd and co simply just breached every aspect of this most unreasonable Mental Health Act when it was passed and they didn’t even receive a written warning. Not even from the man who had written the Act. I doubt that Ken et al ever did find that they were limited even with regard to psychosurgery.

Cardiff is one of the last remaining centres for psychosurgery in England and Wales – although there is no guarantee that Dafydd isn’t busy in his kitchen with a pick, it’s not as if anybody would stop him. Lena Zavaroni died after psychosurgery at Cardiff and the truth was not told about the circumstances of that death.

Rawnsley mentioned that the Royal College had asked for the creation of the Mental Health Act Commission to improve safeguards before detaining patients. So that job creation scheme for William Bingley, Chris Heginbotham, Louis Blom-Cooper, Tessa Jowell and Lord Kamlash Patel worked brilliantly didn’t it.

Ken stated that the ‘powerful anti-psychiatry feeling’ that he believed existed among MPs was fuelled by scandals in mental hospitals. Obviously Ken being a paid up member of one of the galaxies of talent meant that he occupied a different galaxy to me, but in Galaxy Baker what I noticed was MPs colluding with Top Doctors to keep the huge scandal which was Dafydd completely under wraps because of Dafydd’s role in supplying children to paedophiles in politics, including Ken Clarke’s and Norman Fowler ‘s colleague Sir Peter Morrison.

Barraclough responded to Rawnsley’s mention of scandals in the interview by reminding Rawnsley that of course those scandals were a result of underfunding. Well once these dangerous idiots have received their salaries and pension pots and had their research units bankrolled, once an inspection system has been set up that allows Dafydd to imprison abducted people in the cellar and once no legal expense has been spared to pursue anyone who dares complain through the criminal justice system and into the prisons and high security hospitals, there’s not going to be much left over to waste on patient care. And Bluglass will want a good lunch and a nice hotel for the night when he goes up to north Wales to conduct the cover-up and then there’s the millions needed for the rigged Public Inquiries when somebody dies…

Ken noted that when he became President of the Royal College, Cardiff Medical School and the Health Authority were delighted because it brought kudos to psychiatry in Cardiff and Wales. Just when Mary Wynch got out of Denbigh and began her litigation against Dafydd. Tony Francis arrived as a consultant in north Wales just after Ken became President – a nice young doctor who’d been at university with Kinnock who became leader of the Labour Party soon afterwards. A nice young doctor who was going to lead psychiatry in north Wales into a new dawn – who was sadly as dangerous and as unhinged as Dafydd, but who was a great deal more plausible.

Ken was also the College’s rep on the Central Distinction Awards Committee, so he oversaw the consultants bonus’s, the ‘merit awards’ – one did not  have to be meritorious to receive one of those. Ken himself pointed out that there needed to be a system which rewarded Top Doctors who didn’t have lots of publications and who didn’t work in academic centres but who provided a service to the community. Perhaps by keeping the victims of sex offenders in a cellar.

Anyone for an extra Welsh cake?

Rawnsley remembered the political battles between the DHSS, the BMA and the Royal College. They all loathed each other but were united in concealing the criminality of Dafydd and the paedophiles…

Rawnsley mentioned in his interview with Barraclough that the President of the Royal College is a member of the Joint Consultants Committee. It was that Committee who appointed Bluglass and Colin Berry to investigate my complaint about Dafydd and the paedophiles’ friends – safe in the knowledge that Bluglass was a colleague and friend of at least two former colleagues of Francis and Dafydd. Bluglass performed the cover-up in the summer of 1988 and had been appointed by very early in 1988 – so the Committee will have been working out how to get Dafydd and Tony Francis off the hook at the end  of 1987. When the President of the College was – Dr Jim Birley, who starred in my post ‘A Galaxy of Talent’.

Jim Birley had worked at the Maudsley with Dafydd’s mate Bob Hobson and I bet that he knew Dafydd as well. Birley also knew David Ennals, the Gov’t Minister and Chair of MIND when MIND had links with PIE. For more details of Jim including his psychotic breakdown from which he of course recovered overnight and was never troubled by again, please see post ‘A Galaxy Of Talent’.

The hearing into my complaint was originally sheduled for March 1988. The investigation was being co-ordinated by the Welsh Office’s Medical Ombudsman Professor Robert Owen, a surgeon from Liverpool University who was as corrupt as everybody else involved. Last year my lawyer forwarded me documentation related to the hearing that I had not previously seen. Robert Owen was receiving letters and phone calls about me from the corrupt GP David Wood, who had been the person who had originally referred me to Gwynne the lobotomist and then to Tony Francis and who had been the first person to threaten me with damage to my career if I complained about the lobotomist. Because of the constant unpleasantness from Wood, by 1988 he was no longer my GP. Yet I had not named Wood in my complaint, so there was no reason for him to be comunicating with Owen about my complaint concerning Francis and Dafydd. Furthermore Wood had contacted Owen at his home in Colwyn Bay offering him ‘information’ about me. So keen was Wood to impart this unspecified ‘information’ that Wood had cleared his diary and put aside an afternoon when he would make himself available to Owen, who was going to ring Wood from home.

I knew nothing about any of this until last year.

On the arranged date in March 1988 I arrived for the hearing into my complaint. I arrived to find no-one there but a very friendly Prof Owen, full of apologies and explaining that the hearing had been post-poned at the last minute because someone had been taken ill. I am absolutely sure that Prof Owen told me that it was Dafydd who had been taken ill because I remember thinking Christ they’ve done everything possible not to investigate this complaint and now Dafydd’s thrown a sickie. I also joked about it in a letter to Gwynedd Health Authority.

The hearing finally took place in July. Dafydd lied through his teeth, written and oral evidence given by staff from the North Wales Hospital confirmed that Dafydd had broken the law, done a deal with a corrupt senior police officer in Bangor Police Station to have me arrested and both nurses and another consultant had told Dafydd that what he was doing was illegal. He ignored them and stated that I ‘must not be allowed to go free’. No part of my complaint about Tony Francis and Jackie Brandt was investigated and neither was my complaint about Stephen Rose, a Denbigh nurse who assaulted me.

Bluglass concluded that the Top Doctors facilitating a gang of paedophiles who had done all this were ‘caring people’ who had been ‘harassed’ by me and that I had caused many people great annoyance and upset. Dafydd later told people that Bluglass had stated that I was probably a psychopath who would end up in a ward for the criminally insane. Dafydd remarked that it was a chilling prediction. Those two were obviously writing their own Gothic horror story – another from the pen of Dafydd Alun Poe…

In 1991 Bluglass told Dr Robin Jacobson of St George’s that I had a homicidal capacity. Not that I’d ever killed anyone, but Old Bluglass’s Almanac was obviously being called upon.

Bluglass made a point in his report of noting that so crazed and vindictive towards poor old Dafydd was I that I had even accused Dafydd of going off sick on the day of the first scheduled hearing, when actually it had been Bluglass who had been rushed into hospital.

Perhaps my memory is playing tricks, but one thing that is crystal clear is that this lot were a bunch of liars and cheats.

In Nov 1987 at about the time when Bluglass would have been appointed to conduct the cover-up, Alison Taylor, the Gwynedd social worker who blew the whistle on the abuse of children in care in north Wales, was sacked. Alison’s boss, the Director of Gwynedd Social Services Lucille Hughes, was Dafydd’s mistress. Lucille was named in the Waterhouse Report as knowing that a paedophile ring was operating within the social services but failed to act.

On Feb 28 1988 Alison wrote to the Secretary of State for the DHSS Tony Newton and told him about a vicious assault she had witnessed on a child. That letter would have been received about two weeks before I turned up for the big day only to find that either Dafydd or Bluglass had suddenly been taken ill.

The cover-up was rescheduled for July.

During May and June the Nottingham Satanic Panic took place, which, like the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal, resulted in ludicrous allegations being made about innocent people by social workers at a time when across the UK evidence was emerging that the nation’s social services had been infiltrated by organised paedophile gangs. Like Cleveland, the Nottingham Satanic Panic provided a useful distraction from the allegations that Alison, Mary and me were making that something terrible was happening in north Wales (see post ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas And The Culprits Were Named’).

The notion of Satanic Abuse was first introduced into the UK by a therapist/social worker based in north Wales who travelled the UK providing ‘training’ to others as to how to spot signs of Satanic Abuse.

At least two people with learning disabilities were banged up in Denbigh as a result of allegations of Satanic Abuse.

In July 1988 Elizabeth Butler-Sloss published her Report on the Cleveland Child Abuse Scandal. Butler-Sloss was the sister of Michael Havers, Attorney General, 1979-87. In his capacity as Attorney General Havers blocked the prosecution of former diplomat and Deputy Head of MI6 Sir Peter Hayman for child porn offences – Hayman was a member of PIE.

In July 1988 Robert Bluglass wrote his report in which he maintained that the only real problem in north Wales was me.

At some point in 1988 Gordon Anglesea became a Superintendent in the North Wales Police stationed in Colwyn Bay. Anglesea lived in Colwyn Bay, as did the Chief Constable of North Wales who led the force whilst it concealed child abuse.

Anglesea had previously been stationed in Wrexham and in 1994 won nearly 400k damages after bringing a libel case in the wake of two young men alleging that Anglesea had abused them when they had been in care in Wrexham (see post ‘Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd’). One of the men, Mark Humphreys, was found dead weeks later.

In 2016 Gordon Anglesea was imprisoned for historic sex offences against boys in care in Wrexham.

Rawnsley’s wife Elinor Kapp is also a Top Doctor. She spent her career as a child psychiatrist in Gwent and Powys. In 2010 Kapp wrote to The Times in her capacity as a child psychiatrist with regard to paedophile priests. Kapp stated that ‘within the children’s professions by that time we all knew that the majority of abusers would manipulate in whatever way they could to deny their wrongdoing and continue their bahaviour. It was also made clear that all cases known to professionals must be reported to the authorities, to avoid exactly the collusion that typically appears to continue to operate in the Roman Catholic Church’.

In a response to a discussion about this matter on the blog ‘Dolphinarium’, following her letter to The Times, Kapp explained that in the 1970s and 80s she was working as a child psychiatrist outside London and that she and her colleagues worked increasingly closely with the police and social services, steadily learning more about the problems of identifying and dealing with cases of child sexual abuse.

At present Elinor Kapp is a member of the Board of the City Hospice in south Wales – she has been involved with the hospice as both a Board member and volunteer since its foundation. The City Hospice was originally known as the George Thomas Trust, after the south Wales Labour MP and Speaker of the House who was involved with the Trust. The Trust changed its name after it was admitted that there had been repeated allegations that George Thomas had abused children and teenaged boys but that the police failed to act and Thomas was protected by a network of people in politics and the professions.

Elinor’s biography on the City Hospice website explains that she is a ‘mother and a grandmother’ with ‘a kind heart’.

Ieuan Stands Down – and Other Updates

No sadly he hasn’t given up trying to get elected as the Plaid MP for Ynys Mon – although considering what he has done in the past he should (please see posts ‘Further Information On Garth Angharad Hospital’ and ‘More On Those Who Signed That Early Day Motion’) – but Ieuan Wyn Jones has stood down from his ‘leadership’ role in the Menai Science Park, a Bangor University led venture, and has announced that he will not be taking it back up again even if he fails to win Ynys Mon. Someone has e mailed me and commented that it rather looks as though Ieuan has been pushed and they are wondering whether it has anything to do with recent revelations on my blog. I have no idea – but if Ieuan’s decision to stand down from the Science Park project is related to any exposes on this blog, what does this say about Westminster, because he clearly knows that he’ll feel at home if he’s elected…

Now for another update on a previous blog post. My post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’ mentioned the case of Emma Humphreys. I mentioned that Emma was born in Dolgellau – and this was yet another case of someone who’d grown up in care ending up involved with sex work, drug problems, a controversial criminal trial and a suspicious death. I wondered whether Emma had ever passed through the ‘care’ of the glorious Gwynedd Social Services. My co-researcher has helpfully done a bit of digging and discovered that no she hadn’t – Emma left north Wales when she was a toddler and spent her childhood and adolescence variously in Nottingham, Canada and then Nottingham again, so it seems that for once Gwynedd Social Services did not seemingly play a role in this grim story, although systems of ‘care’ in other places did. My co-researcher has however discovered a detailed account of Emma’s life up until the point at which she killed Trevor Armitage. As with the case of Sara Thornton who murdered her abusive husband Malcolm, although these were undoubtedly distressed women with serious mental health problems, there are many features of Emma’s case and conduct which one would expect to make her very culpable indeed regarding the murder of Trevor Armitage. The pictures drawn by Women For Justice of both these cases have been robustly disputed. After reading the details of Emma’s life and the circumstances in which she killed Armitage, exactly the same questions occurred to me as occurred when I read the details of the judgement in the Sara Thornton case (please see blog posts ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’ and ‘Update On Cases Of Susan Brooke and Sara Thornton’). How on earth was it that the very same characteristics of someone diagnosed with a ‘borderline personality disorder’ resulted in Emma’s conviction for murder being overturned and her release from prison, yet has resulted in huge numbers of other people being denied all care and treatment and indeed has been used as a reason to imprison them, frequently for laughable ‘offences’? There is no consistency in the psychiatry behind this and there isn’t even consistency in the particular ‘experts’ giving psychiatric opinions or in the decisions of the judges presiding over the cases. There is something else involved that I am missing…

There has been much criticism of Women For Justice and allegations that they are a man-hating bunch of lesbians who are busy using ‘soft’ Courts to free women who have murdered men. I don’t subscribe to this, I happen to believe that even when women like Sara and Emma have killed abusive men the cases should not be simply regarded as ‘murder pure and simple’. Living with severe long term mental health problems is difficult and living in a volatile violent relationship is even more difficult and people in these situations are very rarely helped no matter what the official narrative of the UK welfare services states. But there is definitely something very odd happening in the Courts with people diagnosed with ‘borderline personality disorder’ –  although I think that I might have discovered the answer to another puzzle. My post ‘Eve Was Framed – As Were A Lot Of Other People’ notes that at no point in her long and glorious career ‘giving a voice to the powerless’ has Helena Kennedy ever mentioned the gross abuses which pervade the mental health services, abuses which will have impacted on many of the people that Kennedy has represented. Kennedy will definitely know what happens to women in the mental health system, particularly in special hospitals. There was a brief flurry of activity in the late 80s/early 90s on the part of people like WISH (Women In Special Hospitals) in an attempt to draw attention to what was going on – that women were ending up in places like Broadmoor and Ashworth not because they were violent criminals but because they had simply become so distressed as the result of being exposed to sexual violence that they repeatedly harmed or tried to kill themselves. And then they were abused all over again – often sexually – in the special hospitals. At one point it looked as though the lid was really going to be blown off this – but then it all went very quiet and it never reared its ugly head again. I kept wondering what about all those radical groups like Women For Justice, the various campaigners for women in prisons, the feminist groups, that were so busy in the 80s and early 90s, where were they? Some of these people have become very well-known and would now be in a position to stop the scandalous abuse of women who often had a biography of being abused as children in the care system, then being transferred into the mental health system only to be abused all over again and to have every complaint that they ever made dismissed on the grounds of their ‘mental illness’ or ‘personality disorder’. Whilst browsing around a bit of vintage material produced by these groups the other day, something suddenly hit me – the vast majority of these radical political groups were based in London, had connections to the ‘loony left’ and were funded by the GLC. That’s the GLC that was run by Red Ken and co – who where councillors in London boroughs where the children’s homes had been completely infiltrated by gangs of organised paedophiles, as described in my post ‘The London Connection’. The same London boroughs that were sending children to children’s homes in north Wales which had also been infiltrated by paedophile gangs. As I explained in the post ‘The London Connection’ some of those councillors became members of the New Labour Government and are now in the House of Lords. No wonder the GLC never funded anyone who looked as though they might dig into what had happened to all those very distressed psychiatric patients…

One more little link that I should mention re London/north Wales. My posts regarding what passed for ‘service user involvement’ and ‘advocacy’ in north Wales described the lame, colluding organisations ‘representing users’ who remained silent as patients died and who admitted that they wouldn’t handle serious complaints because they were funded by the NHS. I have mentioned that on the occasions when someone who actually knew how to represent people joined these organisations they either left in despair or were forced out. One of the key figures in the ‘Independent Advocacy Association’ ‘speaking’ for ‘service users’ back in the mid 90s was a woman called Marilyn – Marilyn was responsible for the particularly laughable ‘training’ of the Independent Advocates as well as the selection. She certainly did a good job there – she carefully failed to select any of the more capable volunteers, systematically selecting only profoundly vulnerable people who were completely dependent upon the mental health services themselves and who were in awe of professionals. Marilyn was quite unpopular with other ‘service users’ who alleged that she was rigging everything for herself – and of course Marilyn certainly didn’t ever present a challenge to the grossly abusive mental health services in north Wales, no matter how many patients were harmed or died. At one point I was told that Marilyn had experienced a severe breakdown, I think because her partner had committed suicide (exactly the same fate befell another ‘service user representative’ in north Wales – they certainly weren’t treated any better than other patients no matter how much shit they were concealing as a favour to the mental health services). Marilyn disappeared from Bangor and a couple of years later I asked someone what had happened to her. I was told that Marilyn had landed a job – as an Independent Advocate for women at Broadmoor! That was when Savile was active down there. I bet that they could hardly believe their luck when Marilyn applied for the job. Or did a few helpful people point Marilyn in the direction of that job perhaps?

I mentioned in yesterday’s post ‘The London Connection’ how Professor Oliver Brooke, prof of paediatrics at St Georges Hospital Medical School was imprisoned in 1986 for possession of child pornography, only to be released on appeal a few months later by a sympathetic judge, Lord Lane, who likened Brookes’ collection of child porn to a collection of cigarette cards. (There are now allegations that far from being a mere collector of mementoes given away with fags in a previous era, Brooke was actually a major figure in a pan-European child porn ring.) A quick search regarding Lord Lane reveals that he was a most controversial man, who became such an embarrassment that at one point scores of MPs were clamouring for his resignation. He seems to have particularly disgraced himself over an appeal of the Birmingham Six, which he disallowed on the grounds that police officers were never corrupt and that was that. Of course Lord Denning famously followed a similar logic, maintaining that if the appeal of the Birmingham Six was allowed it would have to be accepted that the police, the forensic science service and the prison service were completely corrupt – which indeed they were – and that this would be such an ‘appalling vista’ that the appeal simply could not be permitted. Sadly I have news for Lord Denning, ie. that this blog is demonstrating beyond doubt that there is a vista even more appalling than he feared – a vista concerning the concealment of criminal activity within the child care and mental health services that is so dreadful that the word ‘appalling’ doesn’t begin to describe it. Which might explain why Lord Lane kept the Birmingham Six banged up but released a Top Doctor who doubled up as a Top Paedophile on the grounds that he was the equivalent of a stamp collector. Lord Lane eventually became one of the most senior judges in the UK.

Now onto the latest news: I have read this morning that a policeman from Waunfawr, a James Burns, is facing charges of assault and actual bodily harm at Caernarfon Crown Court. A previous report mentioned that he was being investigated regarding perverting the course of justice as well. In a previous incarnation PC James Burns was one Jimmy Burns, a nursing assistant at the Hergest Unit.

Mail online continues to dig up mountains of dirt in their undercover investigation of fertility clinics and I see that today they also have utterly damning coverage of the state of post-natal care. Numerous women are alleging that although they were well cared for during delivery, it seems that all resources are being put into that, to the very great detriment of post-natal care. There are anecdotes of exhausted new mothers not being given anything to eat or drink, of not being given pain relief, of not being supported in breastfeeding etc. As with other NHS revelations, I’m not sure how the lid has been kept on all this for so long – I have heard first hand accounts from women for years of these sorts of practices, from north Wales and elsewhere. One story that I have heard consistently is that if the woman has already had one baby, there is very little care offered at all, on the grounds that she ‘knows the ropes’. One woman told me how at Ysbyty Gwynedd the newly delivered baby was placed on her abdomen and the midwife literally walked off telling her that she knew what to do because the midwife had read on the notes that this was her second baby… Cathy Warwick, a leading light from the Royal College of Midwives, is quoted talking about good practice. This is the Cathy Warwick who was so rude and hostile to James Titcombe, the man whose baby died as a result of negligence at Morecombe Bay NHS Trust and who subsequently exposed the scandal there, that he resigned from his post at the Care Quality Commission. If Cathy had been a little more honest many years ago about the state of NHS maternity services, she would not now be having to give comments to the Mail online…

There seems to be huge coverage of matters mental health in the media at the moment, on Radio 4 it’s very nearly wall to wall mental health (well I suppose Prince Harry has Bravely Spoken Out recently). This morning it was mental health problems in footballers and eating disorders in men. As ever, someone from the Royal College of Psychiatrists was wheeled out telling everyone that they ‘needed to talk about it’ and ‘ask for help’. I don’t know what is actually going to happen if the nation starts following this advice – all they’re going to find is a bunch of completely mad negligent psychiatrists, who if they are like Rob Poole won’t turn up to the appointment, or if they are like David Healy will demand that they are arrested rather than treated or if they are Tony Roberts will order everyone to DO NOTHING, even in the face of severe suicidal depression. Oh well there’s always Dafydd. I look forward to the Today programme soon reporting on the experiences of all those people who ‘asked for help’…

Lastly, Buck House has announced that Prince Philip is standing down from public duties. So he’ll have no more opportunities to hurl racist abuse at Johnny Foreigner only to hear it repackaged by the BBC as a ‘gaffe’. (I’ve never quite understood Prince Philip’s problem with foreigners – he’s mostly Greek with a dash of a few other nationalities thrown in and his wife’s family are German.) The World At One gave a brief resume of his glorious years of service to the British State and mentioned how he sustained the Royals through the ‘difficult years’ of the 80s and 90s. You know, that business with someone called Diana. That ended in a car crash. Which precipitated so many allegations of murder that one Lord Thomas Scott Baker had to be summoned to hold the inquest to Shut Everybody Up. As someone who had learnt his trade at the knee of the Chester and Wales Circuit where he had inexplicably imprisoned a distressed disorientated woman who had passed through the hands of the North Wales Hospital yet a year later released a rather less disorientated woman who had murdered someone, he was obviously the ideal man for the job.

Socio-Political Context of the North Wales Mental Health Services in the 1980s

My blog posts ‘How I Arrived At Denbigh’, ‘Behind The Scenes – At The North Wales Hospital Denbigh’, ‘Massive Over-Reaction – Or Something To Hide?’, ‘A Very Cosy Relationship – And Some Serious Smears’, ‘An Expert From England’, ‘The Blog Post That Was Hacked Can Now Be Read’ and ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’ make it clear that the gross abuses and criminality pervading the mental health services in north Wales in the late 1980s were known to the Welsh Office, the Mental Health Act Commission, the Medical Defence Union, the GMC and leading figures in psychiatry in the UK medical establishment. Not only did the people in these organisations do nothing to put a stop to what was happening, but they were going to considerable lengths to conceal it and to ensure that it continued. Even if I had been a lone voice, my allegations were so serious – and there was a substantial amount of documentary evidence suggesting that much of what I was alleging was true – that all of these organisations should have been recommending an investigation with police involvement. But I was not a lone voice. In the late 1980s there were many indications that some terrible things were happening in north Wales.Movie Passengers (2016)

Alison Taylor, a social worker employed by Gwynedd County Council, had approached councillors, the police, Health Minister Tony Newton and even Margaret Thatcher regarding her concerns that serious abuse of children in care was happening in north Wales and that an organised paedophile ring was operating in the region via Gwynedd Social Services and Clwyd Social Services. My blog post ‘The Blog Post That Was Hacked Can Now Be Read’ details how some of the things that were happening to me seemed to be happening in parallel with Alison’s attempts to be heard.

My constant attempts to draw attention to people in authority regarding the activities of the mental health services in north Wales were ignored. I presumed at the time that people outside the region simply didn’t realise what was happening. Of course that was not true. It is instructive to look at the wider socio-political context of the north Wales mental health services at the time.

Gwynedd Health Authority was known to be in serious trouble by the mid-1980s, although as ever with the NHS, the cause of it coming under scrutiny was financial mismanagement. My blog post ‘A Visit To Gwynedd Archives’ details this and provides references to the parts of Hansard documenting debates in Westminster between Dafydd Wigley (then MP for Caernarfon), Ieaun Wyn Jones (MP for Ynys Mon) and Wyn Roberts (MP for Conwy and Minister of State at the Welsh Office) that had taken place regarding Gwynedd Health Authority. (I had by the time of these dates written to Wyn Roberts regarding my problems with the mental health services but received only a bland reply. I did however later write to Dafydd Wigley as well and received an incredibly supportive reply.) Hansard records that the Welsh Office had sent in a team of management consultants to Gwynedd Health Authority – so although the Welsh Office knew that this Health Authority was a nightmare and was being seriously mismanaged, at the same time they went to very great lengths to protect people in the mental health services in Gwynedd and Clwyd. When I visited Gwynedd Archives I noticed that in 1990 David Hunt, by then the Secretary of State for Wales, had written to Noreen Edwards (Chair of Gwynedd Health Authority) such were the problems in Gwynedd. I note that many of the letters about me that were being sent without my knowledge were being copied to Noreen. I also found another interesting reference in the archive, that is that the Welsh Office were questioning the integrity of a senior official in Clwyd Health Authority – I seem to remember the person named was Laurie Wood, who was the manager of the North Wales Hospital whilst I was imprisoned there (when Dr Peter Higson took over that role, Wood moved on to occupy another very senior position in Clwyd Health Authority). But the Welsh Office had colluded with Laurie Wood over my complaints regarding Denbigh, so of course they’d have known that he had no integrity.

So by the late 80s, politicians in north Wales and Wyn Roberts, the Minister of State, knew that the mental health services and wider NHS in north Wales were a car crash. (At this time, the post of Secretary of State for Wales was considered a ‘less important post’ in Cabinet. Events in Wales clearly weren’t a priority for Margaret Thatcher. The Secretaries of State for Wales during the 1980s were Nicholas Edwardes and Peter Walker. Neither of them seems to have actually taken much interest in Wales and the remit seems to have been left in the hands of Wyn Roberts, who was knighted in 1990 and then given a peerage in 1997. So someone was clearly very grateful to him for something, despite that fact that chaos reigned in the NHS on his watch and that a paedophile ring was operating through the social services.)

This was pre-devolution, so the NHS in Wales was still the responsibility of Westminster. So what were Health Ministers doing whilst all this was going on in north Wales? Tony Newton was Minister for Health between 1986 and 1988 after a reorganisation at Whitehall and it was Tony Newton whom Alison Taylor approached regarding the abuse of children in north Wales. Clearly no-one responded to her concerns. Prior to Tony Newton’s appointment, health was the responsibility of John Moore, who’s main interest seems to have been facilitating the privatisation of the NHS. Both Tony Newton and John Moore later received peerages. Tony Newton was succeeded by Ken Clarke, who was Secretary of State for Health between 1988 and 1990.

I can remember Ken Clarke’s time as Secretary of State for Health very well and the thing that I remember most was his battle with the BMA. They hated him and at one point ran an advertising campaign across the UK featuring posters with the slogan ‘What do you call a man who ignores medical advice? Ken Clarke.’ For his part, Ken Clarke made his famous observation regarding doctors who were ‘feeling for their wallets’. I was involved in biomedical research at the time and although I knew many junior doctors who were appallingly bullied and exploited, I had become very aware of just how self-interested, and frankly corrupt, parts of the medical establishment were. The less scrupulous junior doctors whom I knew were also very obviously aiming to become part of that establishment – that was the only reason they were accepting all the drudgery. So I suspected that Ken Clarke probably had a point.

Ken Clarke recently spoke out about the BMA once more, describing them as ‘virulent’. Indeed the BMA are so virulent that most Health Ministers dare not speak publicly about them – Ken Clarke is the only one that has had the guts to do so, although all Health Ministers have found the BMA very difficult.

However Ken Clarke had a problem on his watch – a junior Health Minister called Edwina Currie. It has now been revealed that it was Currie who in Aug 1988 appointed Jimmy Savile as Chairman of the Interim Task Force overseeing the management of Broadmoor Hospital following the suspension of the Management Board after serious problems at the institution. The appointment was made on the recommendation of Cliff Graham, the Under-Secretary in the Mental Health Division in the DHSS.

Savile had already been appointed to the Management Board in 1987 by junior Health Minister Baroness Jean Trumpington (see post ’95 Glorious Years!’). By now, Savile was being referred to as ‘Dr Savile’ although it was known that he had no medical qualification or medical training of any sort. Savile of course had close connections to Margaret Thatcher who, it was recently revealed, personally lobbied for Savile to be knighted, although she was warned that there were concerns about his ‘private life’. But then Professor Bluglass ignored my concerns about Dr Dafydd Alun Jones’s ‘private life’. Thatcher was also a friend of Augusto Pinochet, which says an awful lot about her. After Savile’s extensive sex offending became public, Currie made some extraordinary comments regarding her rationale for appointing Savile to the management committee at Broadmoor.

Most ‘nurses’ in the special hospitals at that time belonged to the Prison Officers Association (POA). The POA was causing havoc, particularly at Ashworth and Broadmoor. Savile had made a number of comments to Currie regarding the abuses being carried out by the POA. There were of cause allegations that the POA were grossly abusing patients, but Savile and Currie’s concerns seem to have centred upon the financial swindles that POA members at Broadmoor were alleged to have been involved in. Savile had told Currie that he would beat the POA into submission by a number of frankly unlawful methods and by utilising his connections with tabloid newspapers. Dear old Edwina was so impressed that she let this prolific predatory sex offender loose on the management committee of the hospital.

There were some very odd practices going on at Broadmoor at the time regarding the appointment of people to senior positions. A friend of Savile’s, Alan Franey – who had met Savile years before when Franey was the assistant general manager at Leeds General Infirmary – was also appointed to the Task Force and soon became Chief Executive of Broadmoor. Franey later admitted in a book that he wrote that he was appointed to the ‘task force’ after having an ‘unusual meeting’ with Government health officials at the Athenaeum club in London. Savile enjoyed boasting about his membership of this club (which has a high number of medics and academics among its membership) – Franey later admitted that Savile was present at the meeting.

Broadmoor was a very troubled institution well before the advent of this Task Force (the Task Force had been appointed because people were at their wits end as to what to do about Broadmoor), but it would seem fairly obvious that appointing Savile and his mates to run the place was not a particularly good idea. Although the official line regarding Savile by just about everyone now is ‘ooh but we never knew’, I was friends with two young researchers in 1988 who had been students at Leeds – they told me that Savile had been in trouble in Leeds for sex with underage girls. So if students at Leeds University knew, I’m sure an awful lot of other people did as well. I also remember at the time that a lot of people in the medical establishment were horrified at Savile’s appointment – it was certainly not uncontroversial.

However, it would seem that the problems went even higher than the management of Broadmoor. In 1987 Brian McGinnis was the Under-Secretary for Mental Health with responsibility for high security special hospitals. It was McGinnis who was ‘instrumental’ in forming the ‘task force’ with the inclusion of Savile. Yet many years later, McGinnis was accused of sexual offences against children. He was never convicted but was prevented from working with children by Croydon Council in 2005 and three years earlier Bromley Council had ended his involvement with services for children with learning difficulties.

But Broadmoor was not the only troubled special hospital in the UK in the late 1980s. Ashworth Hospital in Liverpool, receiving patients from Wales, also had terrible problems with the POA.  (Savile was a regular visitor at Ashworth.) The abuse that the POA members were inflicting upon patients was so severe that there was a Public Inquiry into this led by Louis Blom-Cooper QC which reported in 1992. The report made grim reading. Ashworth had been formed by the merger of two other hospitals, Moss Side and Park Lane. Whilst I was in the North Wales Hospital Denbigh, I was assaulted by a particularly unpleasant SEN, Stephen Rose. My complaint about him was never investigated – I was simply eventually told by the authorities that he no longer worked at Denbigh, as he now had a job at Park Lane. So that’s what happened to the most abusive member of staff at Bryn Golau Ward at Denbigh when someone complained about him. The problems at Ashworth were so entrenched that although action was promised after Blom-Cooper’s report, another Public Inquiry was held into Ashworth, led by Peter Fallon QC, which reported in 1998. And guess who was a member of Fallon’s committee? None other than Professor Robert Bluglass, who had so successfully done nothing about the dreadful abuses at Denbigh (please see blog post ‘Enter Professor Robert Bluglass CBE’). It gets better – the Fallon Inquiry relied upon opinions from, among others, the Director of Nursing at Bluglass’s Reaside Clinic in Birmingham. One member of the committee that investigated the murder of a patient at Ashworth was one Mr W. Jones, the Chief Administrative Nursing Officer from Clwyd Health Authority.

So Bluglass, who knew exactly what the practices endorsed by senior officials from Clwyd Health Authority involved, was happy to rely on one of them to investigate a murder. At this time, Bluglass was busy publishing articles arguing that the special hospitals should be shut down. Bluglass was obviously not a man to be concerned with abuse of patients or criminal activities on the part of hospital staff so one can only speculate as to why he wanted to see the back of special hospitals. Was it because they were being run by the POA rather than the psychiatric establishment? Some of Bluglass’s published work suggested that the remit of the special hospitals should be passed to regional secure units – such as Bryn Golau at Denbigh….

The Fallon report was also highly critical of the Mental Health Act Commission, the body allegedly protecting detained patients ‘rights’. By then the Chief Exec of the Mental Health Act Commission was William Bingley – who, when he was still legal director of MIND in 1987, had told me all about the wrongdoing of Dafydd Alun Jones at Denbigh.

Now much of this information will only have been of interest to professionals and academics. But the problems of the north Wales mental health services and the mental health services per se in the UK had become very public by this time. Mary Wynch (please see blog post ‘The Mary Wynch Case -Making Legal History’) had begun her legal action against Dafydd Alun Jones and two psychiatrists at Risley Remand Centre and that had been widely reported in the press. Risley Remand Centre itself, where many mental health patients from north Wales ended up, had an appalling reputation for suicides as well as brutality towards inmates and was the subject of much media coverage. A Welsh language TV programme had run an expose of Holyrood House, a hostel for people with mental health problems in Llandudno, run by a woman called Margaret Richards. Patients were being violently assaulted and the drugs cabinet was overseen by a drug addict. It was subsequently discovered that all the patients in this place were patients of one Dr Dafydd Alun Jones. Holyrood House gained even more publicity when Esther Rantzen ran a report about it on her TV show ‘That’s Life’. At about this time, the ever-caring Esther ran a campaign on mental health. I wrote to Esther giving her a full account of the Denbigh experience. I did not receive an acknowledgement. Esther soon lost interest in matters mental health and moved on to campaign on drug problems and then really hit the big time when she took an interest in child sexual abuse and established ‘Childline’.

After Savile was exposed, Esther maintained that she only ever heard ‘gossip’ about Savile, not firm evidence. An abuse campaigner subsequently claimed that she had told Esther of allegations that she’d heard about Savile many years before. Esther could not remember anything about this. So presumably should the horrible truth about Dafydd Alun Jones and Denbigh ever find its way into the London based media in a big way, Dame Esther (as she is now) will not be able to remember my letter either. There was another public figure at the time who was also making a name for herself by mental health campaigning. That was Sunday Times journalist Marjorie Wallace, who founded the charity SANE. I wrote to Marjorie as well, but never heard back. (For more details on Marjorie and her sterling work please see blog post ‘Another Confession From NHS England’.)

So during the 1980s the mental health system in the UK was plagued at all levels by negligent, violent people or people with a history of sexually exploitative behaviour, if not actual sexual offending. Because of the stereotype of the patients who ended up in secure mental health units no-one was interested in the welfare of these patients. Whilst many of the male patients were violent or sex offenders, many of the female patients were there because they were serious self-harmers after having been subjected to sexual violence themselves. A group of campaigners were so worried at what was happening to women patients in these places that they established a charity, ‘WISH’ (Women in Special Hospitals), in an attempt to draw attention to the plight of women who had been sexually abused and were then being brutalised and sexually abused all over again in the special hospitals. WISH had enormous trouble gaining support because the public thought that they were being asked to help murderers. But there were of course people like Professors Bluglass and Robert Owen who knew exactly what was going on behind closed doors and concealed the lot.

We are now living in an era in which people are obsessed with sex offenders and believe that a paedophile lurks on every corner. My blog post ‘A Very Convenient Arrangement With The Private Sector’ describes how all is still far from well at Ashworth Hospital and similar establishments.

Footnote: After Savile’s sex offending was made public following his death, Edwina Currie was publicly named as being the junior Minister who appointed Savile as Chair of the Interim Task Force to oversee the management of Broadmoor. Edwina took a great deal of flak and was made to look foolish and dangerous. However, neither Edwina or anyone else mentioned that Savile had been appointed to the Management Board in the previous year by Trumpers, a woman who was given a series of jobs in which she made some major cock ups. Trumpers herself has felt able to tell journalists that she hated Edwina when they worked together at the Department of Health because she was always having to ‘clean up after’ her….
